This is the last week for local residents to take part in the popular walking tours of Guild Park: the historic 88-acre park on the shores of Lake Ontario in Guidlwood known for its gardens, sculpture and architectural fragments of vanished Toronto buildings.

There are a pair of runs slated locally. The Scarborough Terry Fox Run takes place in Cedarbrook Park and the West Hill Terry Fox Run takes place in Colonel Danforth Park.

This year, organizers of the Scarborough run are inviting local residents to come out and meet Terry Fox’s father, Fred, at a special event planned for the Scarborough Civic Centre.

The meet-and-greet with Fred Fox is slated for Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 10 a.m.

It will take place in the civic centre at the site of the display which remembers Terry Fox’s visit to the Scarborough Civic Centre during the Marathon of Hope in 1980.

Along with photos from the visit, there is also a video playing on a large screen television.

Local history is important

oronto’s history – and that of its neighbourhoods – matters to all of us. It’s why an ongoing campaign by the City of Toronto Historic Sites is worth paying attention to.

Called WTF? (What the Fact?), the cheeky campaign is an attempt to spur interest in local history, particularly among the younger generation.

Until the middle of next month, 100 TTC bus shelters across the city are displaying close-up shots of an unknown artifact found in one of the city’s 10 museums, including the Scarborough Museum in Thomson Park. People are invited to post guesses on the object’s identity through social media. The submission deadline is Sept. 9.

We’re intrigued about what the campaign will yield. Anything that generates in and knowledge of a our view interest community’s history is positive.

By knowing more about our WTF? helps communities, we establish closer connections to them. If we estabpromote lish those connections to how our city’s history communities evolved, we gain a greater understanding and appreciation of what we have – and by extension what we want our communities to be. The potential for fostering greater civic pride and citizen engagement is enormous.

In a time when change is seemingly a constant in our communities, it’s vital we maintain those connections to our past.

Significant change in a community’s makeup can happen in a short period of time. Like each of its 140 neighbourhoods, Toronto is evolving.

For example, while the city’s population continues to grow (2.615 million at the last census count), recent census data suggests Toronto’s also getting older. According to census data, the city’s count of those aged 0-14 has actually dropped by more than 30,000 between 2001 and 2011, while the number of seniors (those aged 65 and above), has increased by more than 40,000.

And that’s just the last 10 years. Toronto is more than 175 years old. There’s lots for us to delve into.

So we urge you to check out WTF?. Test your knowledge. Maybe you’ll come away with something you didn’t know about your own community.

Metrolinx spending has no No surprise byelection was won relevance to Scarborough with low percentage of the vote To the editor: It is duly noted that Metrolinx has $85 million in what is being described as “sunk costs”.

It would be my opinion that the munificent sum of $85 million has not been

expended on anything relevant to Scarborough since amalgamation, prior to which we were self-supporting and with funds in the bank.

Something that has been sadly lacking since we have been required to cater to the

whims and fancies of those city politicos to whom we are nothing more than a source of revenue to support their socialist dreams and fantasies.

Political disgust sparks voter apathy To the editor: Re: ‘NDP vote split helped Liberals win in ScarboroughGuildwood,’ Letters, Aug. 20.

The recent letter on the results of the ScarboroughGuildwood byelection is dead on regarding the appalling apathy of the electorate.

However, it seems to me the root cause of this apathy is to be found in the disillusionment, despair and disgust with our political leaders.

From the lower end of the

political spectrum at the municipal level to the higher end at the senate level there is inept leadership, poor decision making and execution, no accountability, a sense of entitlement and questionable morals, as recent events have shown.

‘Real truth’ I take some issue with his observation “the real truth is that more than 15,000

residents voted against her (Liberal Mitzie Hunter), representing more than 60 per cent of the voters.”

If I were to follow the natural extension of this argument then I would conclude that more than 16,000 or 69 per cent of voters voted against the PC’s Ken Kirupa or that more than 17,000 or 71 per cent of voters voted against the NDP’s Adam Giambrone.

To the editor: Re: ‘NDP vote split helped Liberals win in ScarboroughGuildwood,’ Letters, Aug. 20.

The letter writer went to a lot of trouble to cite numbers showing that the Liberal candidate in the recent Scarborough-Guildwood byelection, Mitzie Hunter, won her seat with less than 50 per cent of the vote.

This is far from a sur-

prise.

In fact, it is the normal way of elections in a multi-party system like ours, where three parties or more are in contention.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, for example, became prime minister and won a majority government with only 39.62 per cent of the popular vote, which is to say that more than 60 per cent of

the electorate voted against the Conservatives.

When you take into account the fact that not everyone who could vote did vote, with voter turnout being 61.1 per cent, it means that only 24.2 per cent of Canadians with the right to vote chose our current prime minister. That’s just the way our democracy works.

City needs to help residents in fight against dog strangling vine weed To the editor: Re: ‘Hike through Highland Creek Watershed not so easy anymore,’ Letters, Aug. 13.

I may not live on the same street as the letter writer, but I have the same problem.

The rear of my lawn is covered in dog strangling vine weed, which has come up

from the creek area.

I have tried to keep a handle on it, but the problem is it keeps growing faster.

My property runs down to the west branch of Highland Creek and my neighbours and I mow this area.

We are happy to keep this up, but the rear of my yard

needs help now and park maintenance is required.

I have no one to help kill this menance of a weed.

The Countdown to Class school supplies drive was

launched Aug. 16 and runs until Sept. 8. The initiative is sponsored by the mall, The Scarborough Mirror and Foster Kia. Anyone who donates five or more items will receive a gift in return.

The non-profit Agincourt Community Services Association will distribute the donated school supplies to neighbourhood students who can’t afford them.

Items suggested for donations include backpacks,

pens, pencils, markers, crayons, pencil crayons, scissors, paper, memory sticks, notebooks, binders, rulers, glue sticks, erasers, pencil cases, calculators, geometry sets and alarm clocks.

Bridlewood is located at Warden and Finch avenues.

Foster KIA, on Sheppard Avenue, held a car wash and barbecue to collect donations for the Daily Bread Food Bank as part of KIA’s Drive Change initiative.

Also, Rouge Valley Mitsubishi donated a Wii game system and more than $1,200 to the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club last week.

The donations came from funds raised at a

recent test drive event at the Hwy. 401 and Morningside Avenue dealership.

New TTC uniform proposal raises ire Controversy erupted last week when TTC workers rejected a proposed uniform re-design resembling the colours of the Montreal Canadiens.

The outcry was so much it led TTC CEO Andy Byford to say in a statement that a posted picture of a blue, red and white striped golf shirt was only a “proposal” and no final choice has been made.

Byford said he preferred a “predominantly” blue uniform, a colour deeply associated with the Canadiens’ arch-rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

An online database allows cyclists to report ‘door prizes’ which occur when a car door is suddenly opened in the oncoming path of a cyclist.

Now a struck rider can register an incident at www. doored.ca, and post details on the severity of the accident, the licence plate of the car involved and other information.

According to site creator Justin Bull, the purpose of the database is to provide a reliable tracking system for door prizes citywide.

A petition is calling for separated bi-directional bike lanes on Harbord Street and Hoskin Avenue.

There are currently painted lanes on both sides of Harbord, which turns into Hoskin east of St. George Street, but the Cycle TO petition seeks fully separated lanes, which it says will encourage more riders and reduce fatalities.

So far, 146 people have signed the petition, but some commenters warn separated bi-directional bike lanes are dangerous since they are too constrained to evade collisions.

The city plans to install separated bike lanes on Harbord-Hoskin in 2014.
