Scarborough’s new face is Jennifer McKelvie, a scientist, ratepayer president, and an aspiring politician.

McKelvie was named Tuesday night as interim leader of the Scarborough Community Renewal Organization, a group formed to find a “common vision” for one of the world’s most diverse places and fight for improvements.

“Our organization is about identifying what our needs are, and how we want Scarborough to be known,” McKelvie said after the group’s first meeting at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club.

“We’re willing to put in the hard work to make this a better place to live, work and play.”

SCRO is meant to carry forward a community renewal campaign started by local Rotary clubs, which released 14 recommendations a year ago.

Dave Hardy, the campaign’s mastermind and an urban planner, said his fellow Scarborough Rotarians had grown tired of the “condescending attitude we were receiving” from the rest of Toronto. >>>COMMUNITY, page 3

‘Community champions’ sought for renewal organization >>>from page 1 Scarborough, once known as the “City of the Future,” had eroded over decades as a manufacturing centre, with inadequate hospitals, pockets of poverty, and churches and karate schools moving into its employment areas, he said.

During the same time, Hardy said, the area produced “really dynamic young folks” – he meant hip hop performers and rappers – which put Scarborough on the cultural map.

But while he’d like to see a concert by Grammy Awardwinnning The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) in Scarborough, “I have no place to do that right now,” he said. “We don’t have a museum, we don’t have an art gallery, we don’t have a performing arts centre,” added Hardy.

Scarborough has all those things already, but a largerscale arts centre and concert hall is among the campaign’s ambitious long-term goals.

Hardy, who has said the clubs wanted “community champions” to take the campaign off their hands, promised Rotarians will stay involved until no longer needed. Rotarians are in key SCRO positions, including Gerard Baribeau as interim vice-chair, Harry Hakomaki as treasurer, and Scott Hua as head of a committee on economic growth.

Eight committees, each with interim chair, were named in all, including for social development, arts, culture, tourism and sports (ACTS), health promotion and seniors, natural environment, and suburban planning.

McKelvie said each needs to find “as many different perspectives as possible” by recruiting local people from all ages and walks of life.

Each interim chair will host a first meeting, asking who each small group might be missing and hoping organizations will offer them meeting space, she said.

McKelvie, who will lead the administration committee herself, is president of the Centennial Community and Recreation Association, sits on Toronto and Region Conservation Authority board,

and finished second attempting to unseat Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser in 2014.

Justin Brown, co-founder of another new group called Trailblazers of Canada, which teaches youth “social elevation skills,” noticed youth were lacking in the audience Tuesday.

But he said he will work with others at the SCRO to bring more young people into the renewal movement.

Pat Sherman, an Agincourt resident, suggested it would be useful if SCRO could get Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins to act on recommendations for large-scale investments in hospitals for Scarborough and west Durham. “I think it’s time for the citizens of Scarborough to stand up and say, ‘It’s our turn,’” he said.

Phyllis McLeod said she should join the health committee after asking whether

SCRO will push for more mental health supports in Scarborough.

Too many youth are being expelled from Scarborough schools as “troublemakers” instead of getting a chance to learn, she said. Does she think SCRO, founded in a country club, can help with these systemic issues? “I can still hope,” said McLeod. “I like that they’re reaching out.”

Woman hailed as hero for helping seniors in fatal Malvern fire ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A personal support worker who remains in hospital following the Feb. 5 fire at a Malvern seniors’ apartment building is being hailed a hero.

Police said the worker was checking in on one of the residents when she came upon the fire on the fifth floor of the home, at 1315 Neilson

Rd., around 3 p.m. “(She) then started helping people out and put herself in danger,” 42 Division Det. Sgt. Gerry Heaney said in an interview Wednesday (Feb. 24).

“We believe that she is a hero.”

The health care provider was among 15 people taken to hospital.

Three died while three others remain in serious condition.

“Originally she was critical. We didn’t think that she would survive

and she has,” Heaney said of the personal support worker.

The other two who remain in hospital are elderly residents of the home.

The cause of the two-alarm blaze is still being investigated by the fire marshal’s office and police, who are awaiting test results from the Centre of Forensic Sciences.

“We’re still trying to locate some of the displaced residents to be prop-

erly interviewed,” Heaney said.

The displaced fifth-floor residents are expected to return to their units when repairs and renovations are completed at the end of April.

The fire marshal’s office had said the building was “compliant with respect to the amount and location of sprinklers.”

Police didn’t release the names of the victims, but media reports have identified the deceased as Hyacinth

Roberts, 72, her husband Charles, 90, and Azeema Safraj, 86.

Toronto Community Housing, which runs the building on Neilson Road, was charged this week with violating the provincial fire code for having combustible materials in an exit route.

Toronto Community Housing could face a maximum fine of $100,000 in connection with the charge.

Tory’s L.A. trip a boost for our film and TV industry

onsidering that film and television production work is worth $1 billion a year to Toronto, we think it’s a good idea Mayor John Tory is heading out to Los Angeles for a business mission in support of the industry.

The mayor of one of the world’s largest centres for film, television, and digital media production should be making annual visits to help promote and protect what is an important business to our city. And he goes at an especially good time as the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar makes shooting movies and television shows in Toronto even more attractive for American production companies.

“Toronto’s film and television sector is a growing source of jobs and economic growth,” said Tory in a press release.

Along with the dollars the industry pumps into Toronto’s economy, it’s also helping grow an extremely valuable source of local talent, which benefits our city on so many levels. our view Being a centre of film and television production also makes Toronto a Trip helps cultural hub in Canada.

It builds a strong community of promote not only people in the creative arts, but also in the many technical sides our city of the industry from high-tech digital imaging, to sound systems, to set building, special effects, catering, transportation, hotels and more.

It’s an industry that also builds Toronto a profile beyond the film industry as it also helps increase tourism. While in Los Angeles, Tory has meetings planned with 11 major studios including CBS, Paramount, Warner, and Sony. According to the city, those studios alone have more than $800 million worth of projects planned for Toronto in 2016 alone.

Tory is not going by himself on this trip either; he is bringing with him a delegation of both film and tourism professionals from the city. They represent Canadian companies and the hospitality industry, and are making the trip on their own dime.

There are nine partners as part of the delegation and they are paying $5,000 each to sponsor An Evening With Canada’s Stars that will showcase Canadian excellence in the industry as part of the visit. Tory will also meet with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

While some may see this as a nice excuse for the mayor to get out to California at the end of February, we view it as an important part of the job: promoting local industry and looking after our economic health.

‘Crazy’ gondola scheme might be stretching it If you’re going to pitch a crazy transit scheme like gondolas across the Don Valley to service a fancy artisanal market, probably it’s best to make sure that nobody’s planning an extravagant mea culpa about their crazy transit scheme within the same week.

Such is the unhappy circumstance that the entrepreneurial gondoliers at Bullwheel International Cable Car Corp., who pitched their plan to stretch cable across the Don Valley just days before Metrolinx moved to slash prices on the Union-Pearson Express train to boost its gossamerthin ridership.

The train was at one time touted as a major economic development boost, providing a quick link between Union Station and Pearson airport. The investment – $465 million – was deemed worthwhile, even as the private sector consortium initially interested in the project lost interest, and

david nickle the city in 2010 Metrolinx took the whole thing over.

The private sector clearly knew something that the public sector leadership didn’t, because the rail line opened up with tepid ridership.

It wasn’t hard to see why.

With few stations, and those that existed difficult to access, the only way that the 25-minute airport ride could be a convenience would be for those travellers who were staying or holding meetings within a short walk of Union Station.

And with the price point of $27 one way, really only executives with an expense account would have any reason to ride it.

But for that class of traveller, an airport limo ride with door-to-terminal service would only cost a few dollars more.

What a terrible idea that airport express train was.

What a terrible, seductive idea. It was so seductive, of course, because it played to that aspirational myth that is so damaging to Toronto’s more necessary priorities: namely, that we need to dress ourselves up in the manner of much larger cities in Europe and America in order to remain competitive.

So if there are trains from Stockholm’s downtown to its airport, and an express train between Victoria Station and Gatwick Airport in London, what fun it would be for us to be like that too.

So many of our major transit initiatives have sprung from that ethos.

In the 1990s, then North York mayor Mel Lastman fought tooth and nail to make sure there was money for the Sheppard subway, because he knew that building it would validate the Yonge-Sheppard hub that was to be his old city’s

downtown.

Scarborough is getting an absurd, one-stop subway extension to the Scarborough Town Centre, because residents there have been convinced that a subway is the path to civic legitimacy.

The gondolas as described sound like a lot of fun – soaring over the leafy glories of the Don Valley, carrying passengers from the million-dollarhomes of prime Riverdale to the boutiques and paths of the Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley and back.

It sounds almost enough fun to subsidize with tax dollars when the logistics prove too costly and the revenues too slim for the private sector.

The worst that can happen is you might have to cut your fares.

That’s what emergency services students and first responders were confronted with as part of a training exercise at Centennial College’s Morningside campus last Thursday.

About 500 volunteers, including Centennial students from several programs, donned make-up and role played.

“This gives us hands-on experience that we can’t get in the classroom or out of a textbook,” said firefighting student Adam Pomper.

“We don’t get many opportunities to work collaboratively with EMS, police and all the other first responders, so for us to use all of the equip-

Medical volunteers have felt overwhelmed by the needs of Syrian newcomers housed in Toronto hotels, and more must be ready to help, says Dr. Paul Caulford.

“We will need a very strong network to deal with this,” the director of the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care said last week.

“I don’t believe we’ve seen the worst refugee conditions, the most desperate cases.”

Caulford, who’s worked with refugees and uninsured patients for two decades, told settlement and medical representatives Wednesday, Feb. 17, he’s seen new things at the Toronto East Radisson Hotel. Some 260 governmentsponsored Syrians refugees, are have been in the hotel near Victoria Park Avenue for as long as four weeks after being welcomed to Toronto, he said.

who have been in buildings that were bombed, Caulford added during a discussion at The Scarbororough Hospital’s General campus.

“One child, who’s five, hasn’t spoken since (age) two, when the bomb hit. Stutters only,” he said. “The kids aren’t in school, and they should be.”

Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, a community health centre, has triaged medical conditions of the Radisson’s newcomers, mostly to get them to various clinics.

Some doctors visiting the Radisson arrived in Toronto as refugees themselves, and work at the hotel, “in my view, to build the Canada they came to,” Caulford said.

At the Toronto Plaza Hotel on Wilson Avenue, which is also housing governmentsponsored Syrian families,

Scarborough’s Diversity Midwives found several women who thought they would be sent back overseas because they were pregnant. One, at eight and a half months, was hiding her pregnancy under heavy clothes, Caulford said.

The federal Liberal government promised to settle 25,000 refugees from Syria, and Caulford said he expects that number to double as that country’s civil war continues.

A larger community effort, including a network of medical specialists and adequate ground transportation, is needed, he said.

Rain Irwin, an Arabicspeaking settlement worker for Catholic Crosscultural Services in Scarborough, has greeted refugee arrivals at Lester Pearson International Airport for three months, and said they’re hungry to know Canada.

But Irwin, whose mother is from Syria, was disappointed to discover many arriving Syrians “did not know where they were going.”

There is “a lot of anger” in the hotels, and all newcomers should be moved out of them, she said.

Members of the Arab C o m m u n i t y C e n t re o f Toronto also briefed professionals gathered at the General on Syrian culture, but Yasmine Bennett-Abuayyash, the group’s communication coordinator, told them to beware of stereotypes and assumptions.

“There’s no one Syrian,” she said, adding though Syrian fathers may tend to make decisions for families, assuming they speak for all family members means “we silence the women.”

Don’t assume patients will decline a service or have declined it because of their religion – it could just be fear, Bennett-Abuayyash said.

She told the professionals to be sensitive, but ask the same difficult questions about things like sexual history and reproductive health they ask other patients or clients. “Just say, ‘These are questions we ask all patients; this is Canada.’”

“I think that we are,” said EMAT medical director Dr. Bruce Sawadsky. “That’s why we do these exercises: to ensure that we’re prepared and find holes in our response, and then we fix them so we’re better for the next time.”

The simulation was organized and hosted by Centennial, which offers police foundations, nursing, firefighting and paramedic programs.

Participants included medical staff and administers from hospitals throughout Southern Ontario as well as members of emergency services from the GTA.

Provincial Budget Breakfast Friday at JC’s Banquet Hall Scarborough’s MPPs will discuss Ontario’s 2016 budget tomorrow morning at the annual Provincial Budget Breakfast hosted by local Rotary Clubs.

Goodwill TECNO employees unite to support vulnerable members TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com In the darkest of places, shine the brightest of lights.

In the wake of the abrupt closure of Goodwill Industries of Toronto, Eastern, Central a n d No r t h e r n On t a r i o (Goodwill TECNO), a group of employees came together to shine a light in the dark for some of their most vulnerable colleagues.

Although they, too, suddenly found themselves without jobs, they formed Team Renew the Good. Along with providing job search and other assistance, the team started an online campaign to raise emergency funds for food, housing and medication for many in desperate need of help. In one week, members of the community rallied behind the group to pledge more than $100,000 through

the campaign.

“It’s amazing to see the support and encouragement that we’ve received, and it really just reminds us how awesome Toronto is as a city, and how much people really do care and are willing to help,” said Team Renew the Good member Gladys Okine.

“We established the fund to be able to support the most vulnerable of our coworkers.

we had several employees who had physical, developmental and mental health diagnoses, and we were really concerned about their ability to secure alternate employment when we realized that the operations were stopping.”

A total of $105,370 was pledged through the campaign, which ended Sunday.

It kicked off Jan. 21 with a $5,000 donation from DUCA Financial Services, and also included a $20,000 contribution from London, Ontario’s Goodwill chapter.

information about available resources. Members have also been helping people find new employment opportunities, and complete resumés and job applications, even providing rides to job interviews.

They are also just checking in on people to see how they’re doing.

Goodwill TECNO’s 16 stores, 10 donation centres and two offices in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Newmarket, Barrie, Orillia, and Brockville closed Jan. 16.

The collapse affected more than 500 unionized and nonunionized workers, who lost their health benefits along with their jobs.

A Chinese New Year celebration in Mid-Scarborough this Sunday is also a chance to get families talking about a subject few discuss, elder abuse.

Researchers interviewed Chinese seniors and their adult children in Toronto for a project on the tensions that exist when the children take care of the elders.

An open house on Feb. 28 welcomes the Year of the Monkey with activities and refreshments from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dorset Park Community Hub on Kennedy Road. It also launches an interactive pamphlet based on the research, which was sponsored by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter ( CC N C TC ) a n d g ro u p s working with Cantonese- or Mandarin-speaking elderly people.

The pamphlet presents scenarios, based on the inter-

views, from points of view of both the elder and the child, said Ben Wang, head of the research team.

Researchers talked to seniors and adult children in Scarborough, East Toronto, North York, Richmond Hill and in downtown Toronto.

Often, they were reluctant to speak openly about their problems, but those interviewed will be anonymous in a coming report on the project. Wang said the seniors, knowing this, appreciated a chance to tell their stories.

Traditionally, he added, seniors are in a position of authority in families, but having come to Canada many become reliant on their children. “They feel like they’re not playing their traditional role.”

The project found families were often reluctant to seek outside help, and many programs that could help them

were not geared to their cultural needs, including language or dialect.

The CCNCTC said Chinese elders “are the fastest growing visible minority group in Canada,” and people need to understand tensions and conflicts that can lead to elder abuse. In a much-discussed case five years ago, a north Scarborough man and woman were arrested and charged with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. Authorities said the couple had forced the man’s mother to spend the winter in their home’s garage. When found, she was unconscious and frostbitten.

Elder abuse exists across all societies, and it’s certainly not unique to the Chinese community, but it “wasn’t something the community itself spoke about,” Wang said.

Still waiting on rapid transit I’ve been riding public transit my whole life. Literally.

When I was just a couple months old my mom was taking me across Malvern via two buses (116 Morningside to the 85 Sheppard) to drop me off with a babysitter. That continued until I was old enough to take the TTC by myself.

And even though the minute I turned 16 I got my driver’s licence and saved up all my money from working part-time to buy a used vehicle, my relationship with cars usually ends up with them in car heaven and me back on public transit.

Most kids collect toy cars or Barbies or something. I collected TTC transfers.

Living on the east side of Scarborough I learned early on in order to get anywhere on time I had to allocate not only enough travel time, but also time for waiting on late or noshow buses and RT or subway delays. Not to mention, I had to leave a few minutes early just in case the bus driver decided to whiz by five minutes ahead of schedule.

downtown is always anticipated to be an hour and a half, and if I’m coming home late at night after covering an event, that trip could be expanded right up to three hours.

Snow storm? Well, there are no guarantees.

More than two decades later, and not a whole lot has changed. Except, of course, the ticket fares and the design of new buses.

As far back as elementary school I remember walking by empty plots of land near Malvern Town Centre and hearing from my mom about how maybe that was where they were going to build the Malvern RT stop.

Years later, as those plots of land slowly filled up with duplexes and townhomes, I’d hear chatter of how they were getting rid of the obsolete RT altogether and building a Scarborough subway.

Well I’m a decade into my

career, and the chatter continues. Most recently, last year’s proposed three-stop Bloor-Danforth subway line extension has morphed into a single express stop between Kennedy and Scarborough Centre stations. And while the Scarborough-Malvern lightrail line appears to be no longer, there is talk of 17 stops of surface rail between Kennedy and University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus.

Call me cynical, but as I bundle up in my winter gear and grab my bag full of snacks and reading material to catch the 5:32 a.m. 131 Nugget bus and start the two-hour commute to Humber College where I teach, I can’t help but wonder: how long until change gets here?

The Scarborough subway likely won’t arrive before my mom’s retirement. I just hope it arrives before mine.

Neighbourhood groups back call for new Highland Creek incinerator Five community associations in east Scarborough say they “stand in solidarity” for a new sewage-burning incinerator in Highland Creek.

Highland Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant’s incinerators are obsolete and the City of Toronto must replace them, choosing between more modern incinerators or trucking the sewage away as dried pellets or sludge, a proposal also known as “beneficial use.”

Toronto City Council voted in 2011 for “beneficial use” but the plan

was unpopular with residents near the Beechgrove Drive plant, who didn’t want truckloads of sludge taking local roads out to Hwy. 401.

They convinced the province to require a new environmental assessment, which has burned up as much as $1 million, re-examining options for the plant.

Representing 17,000 households, the presidents of the Coronation, Highland Creek, Guildwood Village and West Rouge ratepayer groups signed a letter saying they strongly

support incineration, and arguing evidence from the study backs up this opinion.

They sent their Feb. 19 message to the city’s Public Works Committee, which will meet on Monday, Feb. 29, with a recommendation to approve the incinerator option.

Supporters of incineration have expected victory at the committee level, but were less confident of winning the final vote at council.

In 2011, city staff and the committee also recommended incineration,

then saw the initial vote reversed.

This time, all three options, including pelletizing the sewage, were judged to have “very small overall” effects on human health; one wasn’t measurably better at this than the others, the committee will be told in a report.

Scarborough MPPs must deliver on hospital There’s a Scarborough issue that has nothing to do with public transit and, because of this, it’s been ignored by the Toronto media.

Scarborough’s six Liberal MPPs may thank their lucky stars for that, if they can live with themselves.

You may have heard Scarborough needs a new hospital, what with operating rooms from 1956 and facilities falling apart and emergency rooms working at double or triple capacity.

Each year, the province finds new reasons not to make the very large investments Scarborough’s hospitals need, which means another year with Ontario’s oldest operating rooms (at The Scarborough Hospital General campus) and two very inadequate emergency rooms (Disclosure: my brother works in one).

Last year, Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins recruited eight expert panelists to help plan the future of hospitals in Scarborough and West Durham Region. We now know what they told him: Build a comprehensive

And before that: Replace operating rooms and diagnostic suites at the General, renovate and expand emergency rooms at The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) Birchmount and at Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) Centenary – oh, and build the Bridlewood community hub, a north Scarborough dialysis centre, YMCA and resource centre held up purely by provincial intransigence.

But it’s been almost four months since Hoskins got the report, and apart from “Thanks,” he hasn’t said a definite thing about it.

Scarborough’s MPPs are quiet, too. The panel won’t like this silence. One panelist, John Ronson, said last August if the province doesn’t take action on the report, “I’m going to be very, very angry.”

Other people are angry already. In 2014, Scarborough’s Chinese Outreach Committee,

volunteer fundraisers for the hospitals, told local MPPs they would turn their community against the Liberals unless the government made those hospital investments.

What now is stopping the province from, at very least, announcing the hospital master planning exercises the report says should be done within 12 months? Yes, the RVHS administration opposes the break-up of their hospital between two regions, but as the report argues, Durham and Scarborough are different places with different needs.

TSH supports mergers by region and last month, Friends of the Ajax Pickering Hospital in Durham called it the “most beneficial and logical” outcome.

When they aren’t blaming the hospitals for their problems, Scarborough’s MPPs insist they’re fighting hard – behind the scenes, anyway – for all these projects.

Now it’s time to prove it.

A final farewell to an old friend I said goodbye to an old friend recently. It was much harder than I thought. We’d known each other intimately for many years, a lot longer than many people in my life, including my teenage daughters, my dog, and all of my coworkers.

Yup last week I said goodbye...to my old couch.

I’d bought her in university back in the 1990s. Her most prized feature? It’s a pullout; these seem to be few and far between these days. I was going away to university for my master’s degree and had no interest in living in residence with those hideous undergrads.

She got me through school quite comfortably. I learned to like Cheers while sitting on her late at night.

I sat on her while calling my girlfriend – now my wife – every night after 11 p.m. when the rates went down.

I ate poorly chosen, fat-filled dinners on her in those two memory-filled basement apartments at school.

After university, I loaned her to my girlfriend. Clearly

john lyon LYON AROUND she was more mature than I was, even then, and already had her first apartment. I guess our packing job into a borrowed pick up truck was a little shaky as we lost an easy chair along the way, but the couch remained unscathed.

She’s been in my own basement since we moved in, but a few years ago she took a blow. A full beer can stored on a shelf above her leaked and the stain on one of her seams is still visible, a war wound if you will. OK, you beat it out of me: I once was a card carrying member of the Beer Can Collectors of America, Trillium Chapter of Ontario, if you please. Watched the Leafs’ one playoff run in the last 10 years on her, although she had been around long enough to remember the Blue Jays and Leafs runs in the early 1990s.

Off her we sprang in 2010 when Sidney Crosby score the golden goal for Canada in the

Winter Olympics. There were countless family movie nights in front of the fireplace.

She accommodated visiting dignitaries, or at least nieces, nephews, and the kids’ friends.

I think my favourite use of her was the most recent. My youngest, Rachel, 12, likes to pull out the bed and watch the hockey game with me on Saturday nights.

As she was sitting indignantly on the curb I looked at her longingly. I went out, kissed my hand, made sure no one was looking, and touched her gingerly on the arm. The couch, not my daughter. A final goodbye.

The good news is the garbage guys were over vigilant this week in light of labour issues. I didn’t tie down the pullout bed part so the couch was left on the curb for me to enjoy for two more weeks!

Thank God for something.

Toronto police launch cold case website to generate tips

ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police have unveiled a new homicide cold case website in an effort to generate tips on more than 500 cases, some dating back six decades.

“We would encourage members of the public to go onto the website and use social media to spread the word on the individual cases and persons that are wanted for outstanding murders,” police chief Mark Saunders told reporters at a news conference earlier this month.

“We can use the technology and advance investigations and hold those that are

(responsible) accountable for these offences.”

A murder case is usually taken over by the cold case section if it remains unsolved after three years.

The new website allows people to search more than 500 cold cases.

The oldest is the murder of 12-year-old Patricia Lupton. She was found suffering from trauma off McCowan Road south of Ellesmere Road at about 7:05 p.m. March 9, 1959 and later pronounced dead on scene. Patricia was last seen alive about 90 minutes earlier, leaving her home en route to Kennedy Park Plaza.

“Each case is important to us, despite its age,” Saunders stressed.

“When information about any of these cases surface, investigators review and assess to see if anything can be done to advance the investigation. Homicide investigations have always been, no matter how long

In order to lay charges, police need physical evidence and/or witness testimony. Police hope that as time passes, some witnesses will have a change of heart and come forward.

“This webpage is an additional tool that we can use to communicate with the public and seek out information,” Saunders said.

The “most wanted” section of the website highlights cases where an offender is identified.

“In all, we have 30 outstanding arrest warrants for homicide cases, the oldest dating back to 1983.”

There are also cases in which police have the offenders’ DNA. “All we require to solve these cases is a name,” Saunders said.

“There are people out there who know who these offenders are in each of these cases, and all we require from them is to bring that name forward to us.”

Metrolinx to lower UP Express fares In what might be the least surprising transit news of the year, fares for the Union Pearson (UP) Express are going down by a significant amount.

The exact fare cut wasn’t known as of Tuesday, Feb. 23, but media reports had it dropping down to $12 from $27.50 for the cost of a one-way trip between Union Station and Pearson airport, and less than $10 if the purchase was made with a Presto card.

The writing was on the wall for UP when Metrolinx, which operates the service, announced in February disappointing ridership numbers well short of the 5,000 per month needed to break even on operating costs.

MAYOR WANTS PHOTO RADAR wTORONTO

John Tory has requested the province allow the city to make use of photo radar for traffic enforcement.

The primary motive for the mayor’s request, it would seem, is to save money on ballooning policing costs. Having cameras installed at traffic

There will be those who say the move is nothing but a cash grab. Of course it is – and a welcome one if it improves traffic enforcement in the city.

GARAGE DECISION ON TRACK wDANFORTH

The TTC will likely decide what to do with the old Danforth Garage later this year.

TTC chair Josh Colle will introduce a motion at this week’s board meeting of the transit commission for staff to report in September on the building’s future use.

B e a c h e s - E a s t Yo r k Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon initially requested the TTC look into community uses for the site, located at the

intersection of Danforth and Coxwell avenues.

The building dates back to 1915 when it was used as a streetcar garage, and then more recently housed buses.

Currently, the five-acre site is used primarily for office and storage space.

TO APPEAR FIRST AT MAIN STATION wPRESTO

Main will be the first subway station to receive fare gates accessed by Presto.

The transit commission announced last year it would begin installation of the gates in 2016, which slide open when a Presto card is tapped.

It’s part of the TTC’s work to migrate fare payment to Presto, which is expected to be completed by 2017. At that point, older fare methods like tokens and Metropasses will have been phased out in favour of Presto.

Expect to see the fare gate at Main station in early March.

Canadian swim trials set for Scarborough It’s not just the most important meet of the year that Swimming Canada is hosting at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough April 5 to 10. It’s their most important swim meet for the next four years.

That’s because it’s the Olympic and Paralympic swimming trials. In other words, it’s where Canada’s top swimmers will qualify for this summer’s Rio Olympic

and Paralympic Games.

Tickets can be purchased at Swimming Canada’s ticketing website at www.swimming. ca/trials Full meet passes and weekend passes are also available.

Swimming Canada, in their media release, is promising “excitement, heartbreak, upsets and record-setting performances.”

Preliminary heats begin at 10 a.m. each day, with

championship finals set for 7 p.m.

Additionally, clubs are now able to book group tickets through Swim Ontario.

Toronto’s swimming contingent expected to compete includes Olympians Brittany MacLean of Etobicoke and Martha McCabe of East York as well as rising junior star Javier Acevedo of Scarborough.

Toronto Fire Services and Toronto Hydro held a live demonstration last Thursday, at the Toronto Fire and EMS on Eastern Avenue in Leslieville to educate the public about what to do if you find yourself in such a predicament.

In a release, Toronto Fire Chief Jim Sales said firefighters are often the first to arrive at the scene of a collision or a fire emergency, including cases of downed hydro wires.

“We were pleased to join Toronto Hydro for this event as we’re always looking for ways to enhance public safety awareness,” he said.

Incidents of downed wires tend to occur more often during severe weather like freezing rain and high winds.

They also often result when vehicles collide with hydro poles.

In 2015, there were 280 such incidents in Toronto as well as another 75 cases where vehicles came into contact with Toronto Hydro wires.

If wires do come down, the safest place is actually inside the vehicle as live power lines can electrify the ground.

The vehicle’s occupants should remain inside until Toronto Hydro makes the area safe.

If it is possible to drive the vehicle out from under the wires, motorists should move very slowly and try to get at least 10 metres from the power lines before calling 911.

In the event of a secondary danger like the vehicle catching on fire, occupants are advised to exit the car by jumping and to ensure they land with both feet together.

When jumping, people also

shouldn’t touch the car and the ground at the same time.

Further, once you’ve landed on the ground with both feet (make sure not to stumble), people should shuffle their feet close together while moving away from the vehicle until they’re at least 10 metres away or roughly the length of a school bus.

Lastly, any bystanders should remain at least 10 metres from the downed lines as the ground may be electrified.

“It can be a scary situation to have power lines come down on your car. With the help of Toronto Fire Services, we’re hoping to raise awareness and educate Toronto residents, keeping them safe on our roads,” said Toronto Hydro spokesperson Tori Gass in a release.
