OFFER ENDS MARCH 31
There are many avenues to discovering a community’s past, and unearthing 50 years of local high school yearbooks is just one way to see how Scarborough has grown. The Yearbook Exhibition, which kicks off March 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bluffs Gallery, is the first of its type in the province to showcase photographs, graphic art, videos and writings selected from archived yearbooks from schools such as R. H. King Academy, Woburn Collegiate Institute, Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts, West Hill Collegiate Institute, Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute dating back to 1928 until 1998. Toronto Catholic District School Board yearbooks are not included in this exhibit. “We are looking at yearbooks as a use of art and collage and literary art – because Scarborough Arts is an arts organization – that is one of the main interests in digging up the collection from the Scarborough Archives, said Reese de Guzman, creative leader of the project, which is curated by Scarborough Arts. Sakinah Centre lobbies to keep mosque/school open
black history month
MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Managers of a Scarborough mosque and school shut down by the City of Toronto in late January are appealing for cash so their Birchmount Road building can re-open. The Sakinah Centre “just a short time ago was a bustling and vibrant hub,” with a full-time and a weekend school, a halal food bank, and many other programs, says a GoFundMe appeal posted on March 1. “Now our halls have become silent when once they were filled with the laughter and play of our children,” the message adds. “Our prayer hall has become quiet with

but a handful of men coming together, when once it was row upon row.” The city declared the centre “unsafe building” on Jan. 29, telling management it cannot house an “assembly use” includes prayers and educational programs, without certain improvements. Sakinah Centre managers told city building officials they would comply, and are asking supporters for $200,000 “to meet the requirements necessary to reopen.” In an “urgent appeal” by video, Yahya Sumyyah Abu, the centre’s imam, asks for donations adding up to $150,000 “so that we can rectify these matters.” The community centre
occupies 72,000 square feet in the building, which it shares with a printing business south of Ellesmere Road. The January order said Sakinah had no fire alarm system, inadequate emergency lighting, an inoperable sprinkler system, and no proper fire separation between Sakinah and the other business. Calls and messages to the centre over several weeks have not been returned. On social media, Sakinah managers have called the closure temporary, but Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson suggested zoning issues could make it permananent.
Myers to release book on Canada
Fourth person has died in Malvern fire we cannot confirm that they died as a result of the fire,” Cheryl Mahyr, spokesperson for the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, said last Thursday. Police said the deceased was a female resident of the seniors’ home. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. An Ontario Fire Code charge of “combustible materials shall not be accumulated in any part of a means of egress unless the location, room or space is designed for those materials” has been laid

A fourth person has died following last month’s fire at a Toronto Community Housing seniors’ home in Malvern. The fire broke out on the top floor of the five-storey building, at 1315 Neilson Rd., at about 3 p.m. Feb. 5. Fifteen people were taken to hospital where three were pronounced dead. “The death of a fourth person from that residence has been reported to our office for investigation, and we are investigating the death, but
against TCH. The charge relates to polyurethane furniture on the fifth-floor hallway. TCH president and CEO Greg Spearn had said the charge will be contested. As a precautionary measure, said Spearn, TCH removed furniture from “anywhere we thought could be considered common hallway areas of all our buildings.” The fire marshal’s office said Friday the cause of the two-alarm blaze is “still under investigation.” There is speculation, though, the likely cause is careless smoking.

Spring forward, and make road safety a priority L ike every year just before daylight saving time, there’s a reminder to set the clocks forward one hour. But during this time of year, there should be another equally, if not more, important reminder for drivers: watch out for pedestrians. The extra hour of sunlight and the coinciding warmer temperatures outside are sure to result in more people out and about enjoying everything the city has to offer. Residents will be populating patios and parks again as the spring-like weather entices them out of their winter slumber. And expect to see more children, too, as students look to our view participate in activities outside of school during March Break Everyone next week. One traffic fatality is one too needs to pay many; as recently as last Friday, attention a pedestrian was fatally struck near Queen and Jarvis streets downtown. In 2015, there were nearly 40 pedestrian deaths of the 64 total traffic fatalities, according to Toronto police. As the police note in their “do the bright thing” pedestrian safety YouTube message, road safety is a shared responsibility and all road users have an important role to play. “It is clear that all of these traffic fatalities were preventable,” adds Supt. Gord Jones of Toronto police Traffic Services in the video. So for pedestrians, be alert and get rid of any distractions – like listening to music or a podcast on your cellphone – when crossing the road. The same goes for drivers with distracted driving still a major issue. If the fines set for driving and texting aren’t enough of a deterrent, take a look again at the sobering statistics of traffic fatalities. Here’s a reminder for drivers: as of this year, motorists must yield the entire road to pedestrians when approaching crosswalks and school crossings, and wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road. Both pedestrians and drivers will do well to slow down, and with the imminent arrival of spring, just breathe in the fresh air and relax.

Tory puts good face on broken promises Mayor John Tory started Tuesday morning with a visit to the Regent Park Aquatic Centre. Well, he started the public part of Tuesday morning in Regent Park. It was 10 a.m. when he showed up with Councillor James Pasternak, the community development and recreation committee chair, and Councillor Pam McConnell in tow. If his publicly touted schedule held true, this was something closer to the noon-hour for him, as Tory famously likes to start work sixish. It is one of the things voters are said to like about him. Tory would do well to remind voters of the reasons they like him. This week, he has had to manage a fairly significant retreat from the argument he’d made to voters in 2014, to persuade them to cast their vote his way. Tory had spent the election swearing up and down that he would deliver a fast and affordable heavy rail rapid transit line called SmartTrack, with 15 new stops along a
david nickle the city 53-kilometre route crossing the city, and had scoffed at naysayers who raised questions about whether the plan was even possible. On Monday, the longawaited report from city manager Peter Wallace, looking at a broad range of public transit options for Toronto, arrived with a thud. Wallace’s report deals with a number of things, but deep in the middle of it is a recognition that Tory’s SmartTrack plan as sold to the public simply isn’t possible. What is possible? No more than eight stations financed by the city, to enhance existing plans by Metrolinx to expand GO service along the rail lines. And no heavy rail in the west end through Etobicoke, but light rail instead. The overall transit plan laid out by Wallace in his detailed report to the executive committee is, in many respects, a vast improvement on Tory’s
SmartTrack plans, and on Tuesday morning Tory tried to make the case he is, in fact, delivering more, not less. “This optimized plan will provide more transit for Toronto than I promised in the election,” he said. “In this case I’ll be delivering more overall.” It is technically true: to paper over the deficiencies in Tory’s plan, staff have recommended far more public transit in some areas; the downtown relief line that was notably not a priority in Tory’s campaign is in, and more light rail along the Eglinton Crosstown line. But it has undeniably scaled back the specific transit improvements Tory promised in all those SmartTrack stations, and the three-stop Scarborough subway that will now be reduced to a single stop. Will anyone care about these broken promises? Tory seemed to think they wouldn’t. And he may be right. Still, it was either good
strategy or good luck that a day before the Wallace report landed on the desks of executive committee members, Tory was able to make the sort of announcement he’s been fond of. As early as next fall, Tory promised, it will be easier to sign up for recreation programs than it is now, and next year, the antiquated computer system that keeps kids out of city summer camps and swimming lessons will be entirely replaced. That sounds like an entirely achievable promise – as achievable as pushing the TTC to sell tokens using Interac machines, or towing cars parked illegally during rush hour, other incremental but noticeable improvements that Tory has brought about. In times like these, that is something I imagine our early-bird mayor would like us to remember.

Kidney month events planned at TSH Kidney health is being promoted all month at The Scarborough Hospital, which has one of North America’s largest regional nephrology programs. More than 6,000 patients get care for chronic kidney disease at TSH, whose General campus on Lawrence Avenue
has a 53-station haemodialysis unit, operating three shifts a day, six days a week. At a March 31 event at the General during National Kidney Month, patients and caregivers will learn how to get supplies and training to perform peritoneal or haemodialysis in their own
homes. Events at the hospital start with presentations and displays for World Kidney Day, also at the General, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., today. There’s also a community education session from 7 to 9 p.m. on March 30 at the Scarborough Civic Centre. For more, go to www.tsh.to

A man in Courtroom E6 was told he was guilty, and had 15 days to pay a $200 fine. He said he wouldn’t. Instead, he would appeal. This was unusual. Siva Panchalingam is a driving instructor who says many people licensed to teach driving in Toronto believe the city is making a tough job even tougher. “They come from Sri Lanka, China, India, Iran, Iraq. English is a second language for them, including me,” he said last week. In private, Panchalingam said driving school teachers complain they’re harassed by Toronto bylaw officers, but many plead guilty for a reduced fine, or less time in court. There are 808 licensed instructors in Toronto. Last year, the city laid 215 provincial charges against them for breaking bylaw rules, including 98 for instructing on a street near a testing centre. Panchalingam is one of those. He said he was driving home last May – called back by his wife, with a student still
mike adler edges of toronto in his passenger seat – when a bylaw officer, city badge in hand, stopped his Toyota at a red light in Port Union. Last Friday, a justice of the peace in Scarborough didn’t believe Panchalingam wasn’t teaching at the time, and said he ought to know the area was restricted. (The student gave no statement to the officer or at trial.) Panchalingam, who said he got his instructor’s licence in 1991 and taught 2,500 students to drive, remains sure he’ll be proved right. It’s not the fine he really minds, he said, but being charged unnecessarily. Sure, he broke city regulations before, and pled guilty. Twice, he was caught with a student in a back seat. In summer, he explained, instructors can teach 10 or 12 students a day, so there’s pressure to save time. “But this time, I’m really innocent.”
Outside the courtroom, Mike Hassan, licensed for 17 years, said experienced driving teachers face competition from young guys offering courses at much lower rates. They’re tired of bylaw enforcers “making our life hell,” Hassan said. “We can do a lot (to change that), provided we are united. If you pack this place with 200 driving instructors, the Crown is going to listen.” Another rule says instructors can’t teach near a school. Brabaharan Ratnam said he picked up a student who lived across from one in Malvern. It was a Sunday morning during summer holidays, but Ratnam was charged anyway. He wasn’t teaching, he said, but paid the fine. The city’s driving instructor regulations haven’t been reviewed since 2000. Perhaps they should be.

Greatness found in food and culture It’s interesting how hot trends work. Depending on the tastemaker, hyped-up trends shift constantly in music, clothing, design, food – even neighbourhoods. The places we call home – places filled with schools, shops (discount or luxury, independent or chain), parks, eateries, factories, houses of worship, and humans we love of every stripe – can be labelled “fashionable” or not. Talk about a morale booster or basher. It’s wise not to be swayed by such arbitrary things. ‘Hot’ As a lifelong resident of farmland-turned-manufacturing mecca-turneddiverse suburb Scarborough (my parents were newly arrived immigrants from the Philippines and Greece who moved us from my downtown birthplace to Don Mills, then quickly to Deerfield Road, and finally to the Cedarbrae area), it wasn’t until very recently that our large burb, from the magnificent Bluffs to alwayssurprising Steeles Avenue, was
helen stratigos gems of scarborough
declared the “greatest” in any category, let alone “hot.” But there it was – renowned American foodie and economist Tyler Cowen declared us “the best ethnic food suburb I have seen in my life, ever, and by an order of magnitude.” Hi g h p ra i s e i n d e e d , and a proud moment for Scarborough. Misrepresented Much was made of this, I suspect, because although Scarborough residents were aware – and spoiled by – this fact, we’ve been mightily under-represented, and mispresented, by cultural-critic types who tiny-mindedly dismiss the notion that Scarborough was (gasp) an interesting and worldly place in its own right. While Toronto’s cultural conversation primarily centered on specific places like Ossington, Queen West, King West, and Yorkville (where
there are fantastic things, I’m aware), Scarborough was under the radar busily becoming one of the most culturally, racially, faithfully diverse places on Earth. We have a Hong Kongfunded spectacular Chinese Buddhist temple (welcome, Jing Yin Temple on Brimley Road), the Islamic Society of Toronto and its incredible eyepopping mosque on Nugget Avenue, Sikh gurdwaras, Hindu temples, a lovely Ismaili Jamatkhana, and numerous evangelical church expansions among hundreds of other new cultural sites, side by side and with little fanfare. There are thousands of families here, proudly building lives, raising children, welcoming newcomers, starting up businesses, sharing traditions – and we deserve to be acknowledged in the evolving and fascinating cultural history of Toronto.

CIVIC LX FROM
Everybody’s working for the weekend So how much work are you going to get done tomorrow? Come on. Be honest Tomorrow is Friday and all across the city people’s thoughts will be turning to the weekend. Especially with March Break for the kids on tap. It got me thinking: how much work really gets done on Fridays, compared to the other days of the week? Sure there are places that are busy on Fridays, gearing up for the weekend: restaurants, hotels, movie theatres, sporting events, festivals – all busiest on the weekends no doubt. I’m talking your average 9 to 5, Monday to Friday job, assuming those still exist. What proportion of your work are you really doing on Fridays? It can’t be the mathematical Friday share of 20 per cent, that’s for sure. And what is going on after 3 o’clock anyway? I figure a whole lot of scheduling of doctors appointments, emailing of friends, checking out what’s playing at the
john lyon LYON AROUND movies, that type of thing. Zip, zilch, less than zero. Many offices or workplaces have small groups that might go out for informal lunches on Fridays. Maybe a little drink right after work, or even knock off a little early and hit the pub. All cutting into the work week, making people feel more weekendy and less focused at work. Many workplaces have casual Fridays as well. For men, maybe it means no shaving for work, and a nice pair of jeans or khakis. That said, maybe it means no shaving for women either! In summers we see more capris and open-toed sandals on Fridays for women. Few men can pull off the open-toed sandal look, and thankfully they keep those manly feet covered. A recent study has indicated Tuesdays are the
most productive work day of the week. That’s right, after the shock and dread of Monday, people are actually at their best on the second day of the work week. Most meetings are scheduled on Tuesdays as well, and the fewest on Fridays. The same study shows 35 per cent less work gets done on Fridays on average than the rest of the week. Good thing this column gets published on Thursdays! So look around at your co-workers tomorrow, particularly in the afternoon. Are they working hard, or are they researching flight prices, planning their weekend, looking at funny cat videos on YouTube, or calling their Aunt Barb at the old folks home? That reminds me, I do have to call Aunt Barb. It won’t take a minute. John Lyon is a longtime Scarborough resident. His column appears every second Thursday in The Mirror. Yearbook exhibit reflects changes in Scarborough >>>from page 1 and Heritage Site Management program has seen her working at the Scarborough Archives for the past few months. “When I started, it was to try to see evidence of how the history of the people of Scarborough was expressed through looking at these yearbooks and looking at these 50 years of all of us captured at the same time of our lives all put together. To see the growth of diversity.”
As a Fillipino, she said the cultural shift and growth was the most interesting part for her. “It’s nice to see the growth and diversity in Scarborough. Looking back it was very Caucasian. Then you would see poems and writing about the war (world war) and after the war, and then see writing about democracy and then you see this growth – classes get bigger. You can see different ethnicities and different ethnic groups coming to
Scarborough.” With these shifts, she found the artwork also changed. This is evident in the exhibit with the different portraits to show the gradual changes of photography of yearbook pictures. Working on this project has been a personal growth experience for de Guzman, a longtime Rouge resident and former Notre Dame high school student. “I learned more about

It’s Time To Renovate!
Taking in the trains
The best investment that you could make would be in your home. Whether it be for resale or for your enjoyment.
PLUMBING SERVICES We have expanded our family business to include our Licensed Plumber who can unplug your toilet, fix your leaky sink & all other plumbing services.
Specializing in Bathroom & Kitchen Renovations. We are licensed, insured and take pride in all of our quality services. We provide all name brand products for your renovations.
Trust the experts at Crystal Bath with your kitchen & bathroom renovations
Bathroom and Kitchen renovations always top the list of remodeling projects that increase home value. The ability to transform the functionality and look of the space makes it a top choice for homeowners, and depending on the size of the space and amount of work that needs to be done to update the room, these renovations can be done for a number of budgets. Despite the popularity, a kitchen or bathroom renovation is no small undertaking. These rooms are the hardest areas to tile, and factoring in work like cabinetry, fixtures, countertops, plumbing, electrical, it takes an expert to coordinate every aspect of the renovation.
Crystal Bath, located at 2839 Kingston Rd., has been renovating kitchens and bathrooms in Scarborough for 20 years. The family business is owned and operated by Ann and her husband, a licensed tiler with 40 years of tiling experience, and their son Chris, a licensed plumber. “Not every company has a licensed plumber on board,” says Ann, “So this means our clients can trust that our plumber has the most up-todate training, insurance, and the skills to tackle even the most complicated plumbing jobs, like second story additions.” It also means clients have a reliable plumber they can call on for everyday maintenance. Along with plumbing, bathtub, sink and faucet installations, Crystal Bath also handles cabinetry, millwork, tiling, flooring, countertops, electrical and lighting. Since the company
focuses on kitchens and bathrooms exclusively, they are able to control the quality of the work. Crystal Bath works with their clients to create stylish kitchens and bathrooms, whether they are aiming for a traditional or modern look. They offer professional advice on design and function, as well as materials for the renovation. Clients are welcome to visit the Crystal Bath showroom to see demo models and product catalogues. While Crystal Bath completes bathroom and kitchen renovations all year long, those looking for a spring renovation should be looking to book in January or February, as spring continues to be a popular time for renovations. Call Crystal Bath at 416-261-6199 or visit www.crystalbath.ca to request a quote.

Scarborough Town Centre area a fine place for new hospital: mayor Given a subway stop, the area around Scarborough Town Centre is a fine place to put a new hospital, Toronto Mayor John Tory says. It’s his “personal opinion only,” the mayor added, but property well-served by transit - as the town centre would be with his transit plans in place - is “certainly deserving of serious consideration” as a hospital site. An expert panel chosen last April by Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins says the province should start building a “comprehensive” new hospital campus in Scarborough within 15 years.
Both Rouge Valley Health System and The Scarborough Hospital have told the province such a new hospital is badly needed, but its future existence is far from guaranteed, at Scarborough Centre or otherwise. Hoskins has had the report for four months now, and RVHS opposes a merger which the panel said is a precondition to the new hospital’s development. St i l l , To r y, w h o h a s expressed concern before about crowded conditions at Scarborough hospitals, thought the idea was worth expressing at a luncheon Wednesday, March 2, hosted
by the Scarborough Business Association. The mayor’s new “optimized” plan for a BloorDanforth extension takes a potential subway stop away from TSH’s General campus at McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue. Tory said the province would study the area and make a decision, but the town centre is not just the mall but Scarborough’s “civic heart” with a critical mass of commercial and residential development, though more is planned. The suggestion makes a lot of sense, Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker,

whose Scarborough Centre ward includes the area, said later. “They call it Scarborough Centre for a reason,” said De Baeremaeker, adding a
new hospital would be one of Scarborough’s major employers. Placing it in the middle of Scarborough, with a subway station and close to Hwy. 401,
is a natural fit, he said. – Mike Adler

Expert panel recommends separating hospitals in Scarborough and Durham >>>from page 1 ( TSH) CEO Robert Biron, Scarborough Community Council (SCC) voted 4-3 to support the panel’s recommendations. That meant supporting the panel’s plan to break up the Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS), Scarborough’s other hospital, by combining RVHS Centenary with TSH’s Birchmount and General campuses. RVHS’s other campus in Ajax will merge with Oshawa’s Lakeridge Health if Hoskins follows the panel’s advice. Councillor Paul Ainslie has said he voted against the community council resolution, put forward by SCC chair Chin Lee, because councillors had not heard from RVHS, which is campaigning for a merger of both its campuses with TSH. This week, Ainslie, who has the Centenary site in his Scarborough East ward, asked Lee for a special community council meeting with representatives of TSH and RVHS, as well as members of the panel, the Central East Local
Health Integration Network, and Hoskins’ staff. “As you yourself stated, ‘This is an urgent health care matter for our community,’” Ainslie told Lee in a letter. On Wednesday, Lee’s executive assistant James Burchill said there will be no special meeting, but the parties named by Ainslie will be invited to the next community council meeting on April 5, when RVHS CEO Andree Robichaud is scheduled to speak. The dispute between councillors brings to the surface efforts by both hospitals to promote their own vision of the future while Hoskins remains silent on the report. Much is at stake for both regions, but projects the panel supports include new operating rooms and diagnostic suites at the General, upgrades to emergency departments at the Birchmount and Centenary, and the Bridlewood community hub, which would house a dialysis centre as well as a YMCA. Lai Chu, an Agincourt resident who helped bring
together plans for the hub, said she doesn’t understand why Ainslie wants to re-open the debate. Chu said people from her community are urging Hoskins to announce his commitment to the report, including its suggested separation of hospitals in Scarborough from Durham. “It’s a very bold move, but it’s the right one,” she said. “They’re different communities; it makes sense.” Scarborough’s MPPs, all members of the governing Liberals, have said they support all the panel’s recommendations, meaning they back the recommended merger, too. Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong said Hoskins must respond to all the recommmendations at the same time, and can’t rush his way to an announcement. “Please be patient with us,” Wong added last week. “These are big, big conversations. These recommendations will need to be vetted in terms of costs, in terms of implications for the government.”
