Recreation space numbers set to increase locally MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough is set to get many more centres for subsidized recreation once a system City of Toronto staff admit is “inconsistent and inequitable” is changed in 2014. The city’s Welcome Policy subsidizing recreation for low-income residents was used by 24,204 Torontonians last year. But the subsidized programs are only at 22 recreation centres the city calls “priority centres,” and only one of these, Oakridge, is in Scarborough. The Welcome Policy is effective, but its method for choosing priority centres “resulted in inconsistent and inequitable distribution across the city,” staff said in a presentation
to Toronto Council’s Community Development and Recreation Committee last Wednesday. Councillors heard 42 of Toronto’s low-income census neighbourhoods - including many in Scarborough weren’t served by the policy because they were more than 1.5 kilometres away from a participating centre. The city’s new Recreation Service Plan for 2013-2017 recommends increasing the number of priority centres to 39. Based low-income neighbourhoods in the 2006 Census, Scarborough would be the biggest beneficiary of the change, going from one priority centre to 10. The plan recommends making the change in 2014, so the city can use 2011 Census data available next year. >>>CITY, page 4
Scarborough fundraiser for SickKids hospital A charity concert to raise money for SickKids hospital is taking place at Birchcliff Heights Public School this Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Connor Ross’s life changed drastically a year ago when the young local boy was rushed to The Hospital for Sick Children after his parents became concerned when he was having trouble walking and he was vomiting. Less than 24 hours after he was
admitted to the hospital, Connor underwent surgery to remove a large brain tumour. Luckily, Connor’s tumour was not malignant and though he is still followed by SickKids, he started junior kindergarten this year at Birchcliff Heights Public School. On Sunday, Connor’s family is hosting a charity concert to benefit SickKids on the anniversary of his >>>we, page 4

Sgt. Derek Byers, of 42 Division, warns a driver for stopping in a non-stopping zone in front of Emily Carr Public School yesterday as part of 42 Division police and traffic officers initiative called Project Common Sense which is a week-long traffic safety and parking blitz of 35 north Scarborough schools.
Safety blitz in school zones MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Someone besides their teachers will be watching this week as moms and dads drop off or pick up children at north Scarborough schools. Toronto police officers from 42 Division and the city’s traffic officers are willing to teach drivers some lessons, if necessary, during a weeklong safety blitz they say is “in response to community complaints from parents, school officials and crossing guards.” Project Common Sense started
special event!
Monday morning with police targetting traffic around St. Sylvester Catholic School and Silver Springs Public School, both on Silver Springs Boulevard. 35 schools An online release from 42 Division, which covers Scarborough north of Hwy. 401, said the blitz will cover 35 different elementary schools. Teams of police and traffic officers this week will be at a minimum of four schools each day in the morning or afternoon, added
Steve McGowan, Scarborough’s traffic supervisor. McGowan said he gets “at least a dozen to two dozen complaints a week” about driving habits around local schools. Traffic officers urge parents to “choose safety over convenience,” said McGowan. He suggested better trip planning and leaving a few minutes earlier could help moms and dads avoid the urge to break the rules. “The busiest time (in front of a school) is the one minute before the school bell rings,” he said this week.
