On Kingston Road, a BIA is out of reach But business improvement is still an attainable goal MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Gerard Arbour wants to see business improvement on Scarborough’s Kingston Road, but he’s not pushing for a business improvement area. Those two goals are very different, Arbour said at his office

in Cliffside Village last week. Cliffside’s own BIA voted itself out of business in 1994, the same year Arbour started practicing chiropractic care there. Toronto has 82 BIAs, areas where the city matches amounts merchants pay for extra street improvements and marketing, but Arbour said trying that along Kingston Road now wouldn’t be a popular idea. “That takes a real fire to get started, and we don’t even have >>>SURVEY, page 5

Torontonians are once again reminded to not feed wild animals after a second family pet was likely attacked by a coyote in the eastern Beach this past weekend. Couscous, an eight-year-old domestic long-haired cat that belongs to area resident Dawna Wightman and her family, is currently at the Beaches Animal
Hospital after being bitten and shaken by what the local pet hospital told her was an attack by a “large animal.” The cat, which is on heavy pain medication, has lost the use of its hind legs and may not survive. An indoor cat, Couscous ran outside when Wightman ran to grab a phone call and accidentally left a door open. The incident happened around >>>RESIDENTS, page 12

Newly-elected MPP Raymond Cho leaves eight-term legacy at Toronto City Hall Council to decide how to replace longestserving member MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto councillors were debating whether to give themselves a raise, and Raymond Cho spoke against it, but just before the decision he left, and in his absence the raise passed by a single vote. He left, Cho explained later, because there was a community meeting in his ward that evening and he had to order pizza and drinks. This story from 2006 still says a lot about how Toronto’s longest-serving councillor will be remembered at City Hall. Cho sometimes annoyed colleagues and journalists downtown, but he never stopped trying to do good in his Scarborough-Rouge River ward.
“I have two big ears. I listen to people, and whatever problems they have I try to solve them,” said Cho, who for years after the nine-per-cent pay raise (it would not have passed on a tie vote) put that money into a scholarship and other local causes. “When I see the poor family, a family in trouble, I treat them like my own family.” Honesty, respect and caring: that’s the secret to his eight consecutive victories in what is now Ward 42, he said. And after 25 years, the only councillor many in Malvern, Morningside Heights and Rougeville have known has gone to Queen’s Park, convinced the love he has for them is mutual. Of course, there were elections he lost while councillor. Cho challenged Derek Lee, then the local MP, as an “independent” Liberal. He later ran as a Progressive Conservative to try unseating Bas Balkissoon, the local MPP and a former colleague turned rival. It was only after Balkissoon resigned that Cho won a “landslide” byelection victory for the PCs on Sept. 1. Now, with contenders expressing interest (see sidebar), council may decide as soon as this week how to fill his post. Rarely praised by Toronto’s
POSSIBLE WARD 42 CONTENDERS HRATCH AYNEDJIAN Was Raymond Cho’s executive assistant for nearly three years. Groomed for the job by Cho, who’s urging him to run in a Ward 42 byelection. “He’s working very hard and he knows the issues,” Cho says. A provincial Liberal, Aynedjian ran for Ward 41 councillor in 2006. Was also EA to Scarborough Councillor Norm Kelly and for former councillors Brad Duguid and David Soknacki.

press, and never a concise speaker, Cho still had his moments. During the debate on defunding the office of Toronto’s troubled former mayor in 2013, Cho said Rob Ford “has created
two trains” at city hall, a “gravy train” and “a crazy train.” “I like our mayor. We’re personal friends. The problem is, he needs help,” Cho said. In the heated atmosphere, Ford’s brother Doug Ford
GEORGE KNIA SINGH Singh, a law school graduate and anti-carding activist, ran against Cho for councillor twice and was Green candidate for Scarborough-Rouge River in 2014. Switched allegiance to Liberals and is considering a run for Cho’s seat. “It would be a great opportunity to assist with city business,” Singh says. SARAH THOMSON Former Toronto mayoral candidate now “thinking seriously” about running in Ward 42.
shouted at Cho, but then denied he threatened him, saying, “I wished him good luck in the election next time, because I wasn’t too sure if he was running for the NDP like he did (federally, in 1988), the
Liberals or the PCs.” Cho didn’t need luck. In 2014, he easily won his eighth term, and this year Doug Ford, as co-campaign manager, helped get him elected MPP. Cho and his volunteers planted 43,000 trees in the Rouge River Watershed. He pushed the city to turn an Empringham Drive townhouse into a youth centre, and claims credit for changing Malvern’s reputation for violence. He supported the Sheppard East Light-Rail Transit line, until he started voting for subways instead. He was the Toronto Zoo’s chairperson for at least four terms, supporting council’s decision, against the zoo’s advice, to send its remaining elephants to a California shelter. A social worker who believes in the power of prayer, Cho organized peace vigils for the Koreas and Ukraine. When U.S. President George Bush invaded Iraq, Cho led a march from a Malvern church to Neilson Park in protest. “Of course, George Bush didn’t listen to me,” he recalled last week. Never tiring of it all, Cho, 79. compares himself to Hazel McCallion, the Mississauga mayor who finally retired at age 93. “Age is only a number,” he said.
NEETHAN SHAN Executive director of Council of Agencies Serving South Asians. Ran against Cho for his council seat twice, and twice against him for MPP in Scarborough-Rouge River. In January, won a byelection to become the area’s public school trustee. “I got great results in Ward 42 in this past provincial election, as in the previous times. So my mind is not closed. But I haven’t made a decision yet,” Shan says. HRATCH AYNEDJIAN

Could we elect a Trump-like leader? Here in Canada, the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency is a terrifying one. The real-estate mogul and reality television star has been building support on a campaign of bigotry, misogyny and violence. While his campaign is still trailing that of former secretary of state, senator and first lady Hillary Clinton, the gap in polls is narrow and it is conceivable that Trump might prevail. The leader of our closest neighbour, biggest trading partner and longtime ally might be a whitesupremacist-approved, lying, narcissistic tyrant. The only comfort we might take in this distressing scenario: at least something like that could never happen here. Or could it? Our parliamentary system of government treats executive power very differently the American bicameral OuR ViEW than system. In some ways a prime with a firm majority can It can happen minister exercise far more power than a in the U.S., so president whose party doesn’t also control both the House of why not here? Representatives and the Senate. A Trump-like prime minister could make profound and potentially damaging changes to our country, with few to none of the checks on the power of a like-minded president. Our nomination process means it’s less likely that any party would choose such a polarizing figure as its leader, and in a federal election, voters aren’t faced with a simple choice between two candidates as happens in the U.S. But, it would be naive to think that Canadians are immune to the kind of xenophobic bigotry and nativism that has fuelled Trump’s rise. At its core, Trump’s success depends on two things – people who are profoundly worried about their future and a society where systemic racism makes it easy to blame “the other” for its problems. We have both here. In 2015, when Stephen Harper’s Conservatives banned women from wearing niqabs when taking citizenship oaths, vowed to revoke citizenship to dual citizens convicted of terrorism and floated the idea of a snitch line for “barbaric cultural practices,” the party had strong support. Now, Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch is promoting a plan to screen out immigrants who hold “anti-Canadian values.” Does that mean that Canadians are ready to consider handing a Donald Trump the key to 24 Sussex Dr.? We like to think not. But we’d like to think the same of our friends south of the border.

Is Toronto Hydro Mayor Tory’s next gold mine? There has to be gold in here somewhere. That sentiment, or a variation of it, has been a mantra for political leaders and would-be leaders since amalgamation. Former premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach were the first to see the mythical El Dorado in the 416 area code when they amalgamated the city from seven municipal governments into one. Surely, pulling all those bureaucracies together into one would save hundreds of millions of dollars. When that didn’t pan out, provincial scolds like former Scarborough Tory MP Steve Gilchrist helpfully suggested that amalgamated Toronto might sell off Metro Hall. But that never made sense in the end, as the former seat of Metro government housed a sizeable part of the city’s bureaucracy. Privatize garbage collection city-wide? Maybe one day it’ll save the cash-
david nickle the city strapped city millions, but Toronto had to break free of job protection language in collective agreements to even consider the idea. Now that’s happened, maybe contracting-out advocates will make one more attempt, and may pull it off. It’s hard to say whether Mayor John Tory will succeed at one of the most often-sought gold mines in the Toronto portfolio: that being Toronto Hydro, the electricity distribution company wholly owned by the City of Toronto. Certainly, many before him have tried and failed. Mel Lastman mused about selling it off. Jane Pitfield, running to unseat David Miller in 2006, gave it a go on the hustings, as did Karen Stintz in 2010 – and in neither case were they able to get near a mandate to do so.
Tory has been ruminating about a Hydro sale for months at least – or a species of Hydro sale, perhaps similar to the notion that Karen Stintz floated in 2010. Stintz argued that selling off about half of the city’s interest in the company would raise enough money to pay for the downtown relief subway line. She also suggested that leasing the company could work, if it weren’t possible to avoid the provincial taxes placed on the sale of more than 10 per cent of the asset. Either of these options might work well for Mayor Tory’s purposes. He, too, needs to finance a downtown relief line, and could also use some coin to build his scaled-back SmartTrack plan. A couple of weeks ago now, Tory turned his attention very publicly to the nuts-and-bolts workings of Toronto Hydro, in particular dealing with the multiple outages in highrise downtown Toronto condomin-
ium towers like CityPlace. The culprit, Tory noted first in a news release and then in front of reporters at the Toronto Board of Trade, was aging infrastructure serving growing areas. And he made it very clear that he not only wanted to get some power flowing from the utility, but also some cash, which he said should not be at the cost of public accountability. This is going to be a delicate balance. It’s hard to imagine very much money coming out of a partial sale of a power grid already in dire need of upgrade and repair – particularly one that will offset the loss of part of the annual dividend Toronto gets, amounting to approximately $60 million. But it looks as though in the short term at least, we’re going to dip our pan into that river one more time.

Survey shows local merchants not satisfied with Kingston Road >>>from page 1 a match lit right now, he said. “Adding more taxes to the businesses will go over like a lead Zeppelin, I can tell you. Arbour explained he doesn’t think BIAs are bad, but local businesses in Cliffside, Cliffcrest, Birch Cliff and Scarborough Village aren’t getting value for the property taxes they pay already. To “raise the bar on K.R (Kingston Road). and prove that point, he recently surveyed not just the merchants in those places but other people who care about its commercial areas. About 95 per cent of the 408 people who responded through his Facebook page said they weren’t satisfied with the state of the road, once a highway and a gateway to Toronto. Asked to name obstacles to “business improvement, 83 per cent of respondents said there weren’t enough
“quality businesses on the road, and most thought motels and shelters and a lack of municipal streetscape improvements were a problem.
“
We have lots of quality businesses, and I promote them regularly. That’s what people need to know. – Gerard Arbour
Dr i v i n g o n K i n g s t o n Road, Arbour pointed out the Cliffside Village signs put up in the 1990s by the BIA are tagged with graffiti and their wood is falling apart. He pointed to medians overgrown with weeds. “If we’re expected to take care of our property, the city should be expected to take care of theirs, he said. There are long-abandoned lots and buildings in Cliffside. One lot on the road’s south side, empty for 15 years, was hidden from
view by an overgrown hedge and plywood boards painted with the words, “no parking, in use. In both Cliffside and Birch Cliff, the latter seeing midrise condominium projects because of its nearness to the Beach, many first-floor storefronts are used as homes, their windows covered with blinds or curtains. Gary Crawford, a local councillor for both communities, has said he wants to encourage formation of a BIA anywhere on Kingston Road, but just getting owners together is challenging. A new city experiment is trying to encourage merchants on Rogers Road, in the west end, to form an association and then a BIA by providing them up front with economic studies of the area. Kingston Road was another possible candidate for this shortcut program, and city officials have said it will be tried there, should Rogers prove successful.
SPECIAL MEETING OF MEMBERS A Special Meeting of Members of Rouge Valley Health System (“RVHS) is being held for members to vote on: (1) the proposed transfer of certain assets and liabilities of RVHS related to the Ajax and Pickering site to Lakeridge Health (the “Transfer); and (2) the proposed amalgamation of RVHS and The Scarborough Hospital (the “Amalgamation). The purpose of the Special Meeting is to approve the Transfer, the Amalgamation, the Application for Letters Patent of Amalgamation, the Amalgamation Agreement and the Integration and Transfer Agreement. To get copies of the full text of the proposed special resolution and related documents, please do any of the following: Visit the administration offices at either of our hospital campuses– Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (580 Harwood Avenue South, Ajax) or Rouge Valley Centenary (2867 Ellesmere Road, Scarborough); Download at www.rougevalley.ca/board-meetings; or Call 416-281-7293 or email tmatthews@rougevalley.ca.
After Cliffside’s BIA failed, Arbour joined a village revitalization group, which had the city match funds to modernize the facade of commercial buildings, including his. future development “It was a very popular program and then it just got discontinued, he said. And he worked for a year on an Avenue Study the city approved in 2009 to guide future development. The only result of that study so far for Cliffside,
Arbour argued, is a “hole across the street for a future condo, and he insisted the city can do many simple t h i n g s t o i m p r ov e t h e streetscape before other condo projects arrive. There are signs others feel the same way. Nearby on Sandown Lane, the artist BC Johnson, hired by Mural Routes to paint wilderness scenes this summer on the outer walls of Ikki Sushi at 2328 Kingston Rd., continued working on his own to paint nearby buildings. He was busy painting the rear of Cliffside Pharmacy to
look like a cottage. “The drug store said they don’t want to know, they just let me do it, added Johnson, who said graffiti taggers have stopped covering his work. Arbour, who said he hopes his survey will lay groundwork for a “loose business association, has started another Facebook page called Kingston Road Business Directory. “We have lots of quality businesses, and I promote them regularly. That’s what people need to know. There’s the good, bad, and the ugly, but there’s a lot of good.

Toronto-born giant pandas turn one; celebration planned Tara HaTHerly thatherly@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s world-famous babies are turning one. Giant pandas Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue were born at the Toronto Zoo Oct. 13, 2015. A birthday celebration will take place at the zoo Thanksgiving long weekend - Saturday, Oct. 8 through Monday, Oct. 10. There will be panda-themed activities and giveaways, interpretive stations, festive photo opportunities and more. Panda mascots will join the party, visiting and posing for
photos with guests. “We are proud of the past year’s exciting journey with the giant panda cubs and are delighted to be celebrating their first birthday,” John Tracogna, Toronto Zoo CEO, said in a statement. A fundraising dinner is being held Saturday, Oct. 15 to mark the milestone birthday of the only Canadian-born giant pandas and celebrate the recent downgrading of giant pandas from endangered to vulnerable. to establish a Toronto Zoo fund supporting endangered Chinese species, is co-hosted by the Chinese Culture Centre
of Greater Toronto (CCCGT). “The arrival of the two giant panda on 2013 has created a huge opportunity for promoting friendship and understanding between the people of Canada and China,” Dr. Ming Tat Cheung, CCCGT chairman and president, said in a statement. “Subsequent successful breeding of the two giant panda cubs proves that cooperation of the Toronto Zoo and zoos in China has taken us to another level on scientific research on endangered animals’ reproduction.”
Mom and the cub’s potential father, Da Mao, are visiting from China, spending five years in Toronto and five at the Calgary Zoo. They leave Toronto for Calgary in 2018, along with Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue. Er Shun was artificially inseminated in Toronto with sperm from three males - fresh sperm from Da Mao and two frozen samples from China. It is possible Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue could have not one, but two, fathers. Paternity testing will be done when the bears get to China, following the end of Er Shun and Da Mao’s 10-year stay.
Do you have good hearing but find listening tiring? Research has shown that even people with minimal hearing loss find listening to be tiring. Swiss based hearing aid technology can help by limiting the effort needed by the brain to understand speech. Listening and understanding speech are an important part of everyday communications. However, this can be challenging for people with normal hearing, and even more trying for people with hearing loss. Many of our everyday environments are not ideal. Poor acoustics, lack of visual cues (e.g. on-the phone or talking from another room), muffled speech, and background noise limit our ability to understand speech. This results in asking people to repeat themselves, straining to hear, and possibly avoiding group discussions. A rising field of study by hearing researchers is listening effort. This can be defined as the amount of cognitive resources that are being used to process and understand speech. Research suggests that continued listening effort is linked to

GIVE IT’S THE ULTIMATE BLOOD RENEWABLE RESOURCE
Meet Yvonne Ohara: she’s done it 800 times TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Yvonne Ohara is in the exclusive 800 club. Recently, the Etobicoke woman became one of only a handful of Ontarians to donate blood an astounding 800 times. “Blood is the ultimate renewable resource,” said Ohara, 68, who works for Toronto police. “You don’t know when you, a family member or a friend may need some blood.” Every two weeks, Ohara heads to Canadian Blood Services (CBS) headquarters at 67 College St. to donate a bag of platelets, which she can donate 24 times a year. Ohara began donating blood at age 21. She said she was drawn to more specialized platelets and plasma donation after seeing other donors on different blood-drawing machines. “The nice thing about plasma and platelet donation is you’re essentially matched with (a recipient),” Ohara said. Platelets, a component required to make blood clot, is in need by people with diseases associated with prolonged bleeding, such as cancer and bone marrow therapy. Platelets have a shelf

life of only five days. Plasma donations help people with some bleeding disorders, liver diseases, and in some operations. Blood donation is a family tradition for Ohara. Ohara’s father, Charles Overton, began taking her at age four to his blood-donation appointments, including at
the former Hospital for Sick Children, which is now CBS headquarters where Ohara donates. Overton donated 99 times until his age made him ineligible. Michael Scharlemann, Ohara’s husband, has donated blood 78 times. He made a stem cell donation after being
notified he was a match on the national unrelated bone marrow registry. “The trick is to get donors younger, in high school and in college,” Ohara said. “Make it a family tradition. Go with your parents or friends to a mobile clinic at the mall.” Across Canada, CBS must collect 17,000 units of blood
every week. Since blood products have a limited shelf life, demand is constant. “Roughly every minute, every day, someone in Canada needs blood,” CBS stated. Blood and blood components are used to treat a number of injuries and illnesses, including various forms of cancer, hip and joint conditions, transplants, traumas, such as car accidents, blood disorders, and many others. Across the country, less than four per cent of eligible Canadians donate blood, CBS reported. One in 60 Canadians donate, despite the fact one in two is eligible. Meanwhile, half of Canadians report they or a family member have required blood or blood components for surgery or medical treatment, CBS stated. Type O negative blood is in highest demand. It can be used in emergency situations on anyone when there is no time to test a patient’s blood. People with Type O negative blood are considered universal donors. One person may donate whole blood up to six times a year, improving the lives of as many as 18 people, to CBS stated. The

entire process takes just over an hour. The standard blood donation is approximately 450 millilitres, slightly less than half a litre or two cups. An average adult’s body contains about five litres of blood. This year, CBS has revised its donation eligibility requirements. Health Canada approved CBS’s request to reduce the blood-donation waiting period for men who have sex with men from five years to one year. CBS tests blood donations for syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV-1 and 2, Human T-Cell lymphotropic virus HTLV-I and II and West Nile Virus. CBS also revised its donation eligibility requirements to mitigate the risk, which it pegs at one in 8.3 million, of the Zika virus entering the Canadian blood system. Anyone who has traveled outside of Canada, the continental United States and Europe is now ineligible to give blood for 21 days after their return. The Zika virus lasts three to five days in the blood, and clears the body within 21 days, CBS stated.

Residents who live near ravines urged to be vigilant with pets >>>from page 1 noon on Sunday, Oct. 2. “I’ll regret it all my life. I feel really bad,” a tearful Wightman told The Mirror early Tuesday afternoon. “I’m normally so vigilant about keeping the doors closed. It happened in a matter of minutes. I don’t understand what is going on. It was noon.” Wightman, who has lived near Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue for eight years, lives near Drew and Heather Abbott whose Yorkshire terrier, Dave, was snatched by a coyote on Tuesday, Sept. 27 and hasn’t been seen since. The family’s other Yorkie, Mia, was also bitten during the attack. “We’re all dealing with the coyotes right now. There are four of them,” she said. “Someone’s feeding them. We don’t have a coyote problem. We have a people problem.” Wightman, whose dog was also attacked by a coyote about five years ago, said the coyotes

confirmed they received a report on Sunday from a resident whose cat had been attacked that same day. She urged Torontonians who live near ravines and forests, which are typical coyote habitat, to be especially vigilant with their pets.
Recently, TAS has handdelivered coyote awareness information to coyote-prone neighbourhoods across the city. A couple of weeks ago, 140 information packages were distributed to residents in the area of Neville Park to educate them about coyotes and what to do to avoid conflicts. “The city has a coyote response strategy that it follows when dealing with coyotes that includes education, no-feeding provisions, removal criteria and methods. Conditions for removal do not include an attack or bite on another animal, as this is normal coyote behaviour,” Glibbery wrote in an email to The Mirror. Toronto Animal Services will only remove a coyote when it is injured, sick or debilitated; when a coyote has attacked and/or bitten a human; and when a coyote is exhibiting behaviour that is considered to be a threat to public safety. “In this instance the coyote reportedly resides in the
Neville Park area which is 90 per cent private property. If the coyote met the conditions listed above, the city can hire a trapper. However 90 per cent of the lands in the Neville Park area are privately owned, and therefore the residents would need to grant permission for the city to place traps on their private lands,” she explained. “There is public space in this area as well land that is owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). However the TRCA has been clear in the past that they will not permit trapping on their lands.” Further, Glibbery noted that “in accordance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, the recovered coyote upon receiving medical treatment will be located back into the area from which it was captured.” She also advised anyone who perceives a coyote to be a threat to public safety to immediately call 911.

My husband lost his job. We fell behind on our mortgage. The bank was seizing our home. I still can’t believe that you gave us an emergency mortgage with no proof of income. You saved our home & gave us extra cash to get by until he finds another job. Thanks! C.J.

Union upset over TTC’s one-person subway system launching next week It appears the TTC is going to have a fight on its hands as it begins to phase out subway guards from service. The guards are responsible for safely opening and closing doors on the train. Transit agencies the world over have switched to a one-person system, and now the TTC is following suit as of next week on the Sheppard line. The TTC’s main labour union ATU Local 113 isn’t taking the move lying down: it had a hand in encouraging TTC personnel to turn down voluntary late night subway shifts during Nuit Blanche, presumably to protest the new one-person system according to media reports, and is promising further actions in the future. TO EXPLORE RIDE HAILING SERVICES wTTC
The TTC will explore using taxi cabs and ride hailing services like UberX to supplement service along certain routes. The transit commission’s
rahul gupta TO in TRANsIT board expressed caution, but ultimately voted unanimously to explore if the scheme will make sense for the TTC, as it has for other cities. The TTC already contracts taxi companies to provide additional Wheel-Trans service, but it’s unknown what the face of future “micro transit” could look like. TTC staff will now research the matter to see if the scheme will work for the transit commission. OF EGLINTON BUS BARN UNDER WAY wDEMO
It was probably more suited for filming post-apocalyptic zombie movies in its later years, but the Eglinton bus barn in its heyday was a crucial transit hub. Demolition of the old barn began in late September at the Yonge-Eglinton intersec-
tion. Dating back to 1922, the garage housed buses and was the city’s first streetcar storage facility. It closed for good in 2004, with calls from community advocates to convert all or part of the land into a public square. Is CLOSED THIS WEEKEND wBAY-RICHMOND
The busy Bay-Richmond intersection will close Oct. 6 to 11 for road and streetcar track work. Construction will take place 24 hours a day, although the city is promising to suspend noisy and disruptive work by 11 p.m. nightly. Cyclists and pedestrians will still be permitted to access the intersection. Another closure is planned over the weekend on Bay Street, between King and Adelaide streets, for a crane hoisting. Embracing what is wonderful about Scarborough Are you familiar with world-famous urbansuburban rivalries? Say, Manhattan versus The Bronx. Downtown Toronto versus Scarborough? Immense silliness at best, terrifying class warfare at worst? People sharing a city are often too eager to judge and reduce “the other” to gum-snapping/ gas-guzzling caricatures. The bizarre, age-old tendency of humans to divide ourselves along geographical lines is a grievous pet peeve of mine. It’s the main reason I’ve become such an enthusiastic defender of Scarborough. The phrase ‘barbarians at the gate’ sprang to mind this week after reading painfully offensive comments in the Toronto Star from residents of Ward 32 (Beaches-East York). At hand was the political prospect of merging that eastern ward with one in southwest Scarborough for efficiency’s sake. That inspired some frantic
helen stratigos gems of scarborough
pearl-clutching (allow me that caricature, please) and gasps of No! Not Scarborough! - and I immediately pictured the faceless neighbourhood guardians fending off perceived barbaric suburbanites who’d curled our infamous sprawling claws around their pristine quaint-shop necks, infesting them with the taint of...beautiful parks, international cuisines, souped-up Honda Civics, factory churches and industrious, multiracial people, among other things. Gasp! indeed. Then I became livid. I won’t paint all Beach residents with an arrogant/ ignorant brush, because that would defy the idea of not smearing/reducing an entire community. So I refrain. But I did feel a punch to the gut due to characterizations of the place I call home. I’m sick

of it. Poking around the Internet for ammunition, I discovered a recurring theme. Geographical snobbery in Canada is created around common contrasts: the favoured area is seen as “established” (the “dominant” race rather than racial minorities, regardless of minorities’ socioeconomic status); many residents having ‘elite’ professions, especially in media and the arts, versus blue-collar jobs; a historically ‘old grid’ city because post-war suburban developments are now declared by so-called elites undesirable landscapes. Repeat reason No. 1. And there you have it. My response to this pattern? I reject it. I flip the script. I’m proud of my suburb, my neighbourhood, my home.

Looking at the Jays playoff past Man, 81, riding scooter hit by car The Toronto Blue Jays are going to the American League Division Series (ALDS) for a second straight year after walking off a wildcard win against the Baltimore Orioles in Toronto Tuesday, thanks to an 11th-inning, three-run homer by Edwin Encarnacion. The Jays will face the Texas Rangers in the ALDS, also for the second straight year, with the series kicking off in Texas Thursday. This is the seventh time the Jays have made the playoffs since the team’s 1977 Major League Baseball (MLB) debut. Here’s a look back at Toronto’s playoff past. 2015 The Toronto Blue Jays’ 2015 season brought playoff baseball to a new generation of Canadians, after a 22-yeardrought, inspiring a jump in youth baseball registrations in 2016. After clinching the American League (AL) East title at the end of September, with a record of 93-69, six games up on the secondplace New York Yankees, the Jays started October by besting the Texas Rangers in five games to take the ALDS. Toronto faced the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), falling one win short of advancing to the World Series in a Game 6. 1993
An 81-year-old man riding a mobility scooter was seriously hurt when he was hit by a car in the Eglinton and Midland avenues area of Scarborough Sunday, Oct. 2. Toronto police report the man was crossing Eglinton Avenue East on the west side of Winter Avenue, shortly before 11 a.m., when he was hit by a northbound car turning left on Eglinton from
Winter. The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the car involved was a 2003 Acura, driven by a 24-year-old man. Anyone who
witnessed or has information about the incident is asked to call Toronto Police at 416808-1900. Anonymous tips can be made through Crime Stoppers at www.222tips. com or 1-416-2228477.
Dan Pearce/MetrolanD
Mayor John Tory and Toronto Blue Jays alumni Roberto Alomar raise a Blue Jays flag at City Hall in honour of the team clinching a post-season spot Tuesday.
This playoff run culminated with the biggest home run in Toronto Blue Jays history, as Joe Carter smacked a three-run shot over the left field wall in Game 6 against the Philadelphia to give the Jays their second World Series championship in a row. 1992 The Blue Jays made history in 1992 by becoming the first non-American and only Canadian team to win the World Series. The Jays beat the Atlanta Braves in six games to win their first World Series title. Game 6 was played in Atlanta. 1991 This was another season of playoff heartbreak for Jays fans as their team lost the ALCS in five games to the Minnesota Twins. It marked
Since 1953
the third time the Jays had reached the AL title series and the third time in a row they had been defeated. 1989 Heartbreak again as Jays fans, revved up for the second-ever playoff series, saw their team fall in five games to the Oakland As.

Though the Jays lost in seven games to the Kansas City Royals, this series will always be fondly remembered as Toronto’s first MLB playoff appearance. At the time, fans felt the Jays had won the series after taking a 3-1 lead. This was also the first year the ALCS went to a best-of-seven format, so if it had been a five-game series as in previous seasons the Jays would have won easily.

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce
the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Mayor John Tory speaks of the importance of a long-term national housing strategy alongside mayors from several other major cities at the Toronto Housing Summit at Daniels Spectrum last Friday.
Big city mayors, including Toronto’s John Tory, call for more federal funding at housing summit Request to federal government for $12.6 billion over the next decade Justin skinner jskinner@insidetoronto.com When it comes to people being squeezed out of the housing market, Toronto is not alone. Toronto Mayor John Tory was joined by mayors from six other major cities across Canada at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park on Friday to speak of the urgent need for a national housing strategy as well as funding for housing from the federal government. The mayors’ request $12.6 billion in federal dollars specifically for public housing over the next 10 years - came as wait lists and repair backlogs plague Toronto Community Housing and other housing agencies
across the country. “We’ve put up almost a billion dollars here of city property taxpayers’ money to repair social housing, but it can’t be borne by the property taxpayers alone,” Tory said. “We need the partnerships of the other governments (to bridge the funding gap). Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson pointed out that Edmonton has set aside 131 acres of land for social and affordable housing, but added that more funds are needed to maximize the use of that land. “There was inattention on this file for too long (from the federal government) and it’s exacerbated the crisis we find ourselves in,” he said. “Mayors across the country have had to beg, borrow and steal to innovate.” Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson called the housing issue “a humanitarian crisis” and noted his city is looking at an “empty homes tax” to ensure housing is used for its intended purpose and not left vacant as an investment. Fe d e ra l Mi n i s t e r f o r Families, Children and
Social Development JeanYves Duclos acknowledged that there is a problem when it comes to housing affordability and said the Trudeau government is committed to creating a National Housing Strategy. “We have invested a historic amount of $2.3 billion over the next two years as a first start to address the most pressing housing needs of our families, and we have signalled that to be a good partner, we have to build a housing strategy,” he said. “A National Housing Strategy is the way through which we will redefine the role of the federal government here in Toronto and across Canada when it comes to meeting the housing needs of our families.” He added that the Trudeau government has invested $154 million in Toronto to immediately relieve repair pressures on public housing stock. That is far from the 1.6 billion the city is expected to need over the next decade, but Duclos reiterated that there is more coming. “This is the first step towards a longer-term relationship,” he said.

Drury School for the Deaf (formerly the Ontario School for the Deaf, Milton); The Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf (formerly the Ontario Institute for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb; and/or The Ontario School for the Deaf), the Robarts School for the Deaf Or are the Family Members of Someone Who Did
A Lawsuit May Affect Your Rights. Please Read this Notice Carefully this notice is to advise of a lawsuit brought as a class action relating to the ernest c. Drury School for the Deaf (formerly the ontario School for the Deaf, Milton) (“Drury”), the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf (formerly the ontario institute for the education of the Deaf and Dumb and the ontario School for the Deaf) (“Sir James Whitney”), and the Robarts School for the Deaf (“Robarts”), collectively referred to as the “Schools”. it involves anyone who was a student at Drury since 1963 to the present, Sir James Whitney since 1938 to the present, and Robarts since 1973 to the present and certain of their family members. If you know a student of the Schools who cannot read this notice, please share this information with them. if you are within this group, you have a choice of whether to stay in the class or not, and you must decide this now. What is this case about? the lawsuit says the Province of ontario failed to properly care for and protect people who attended or resided at the Schools. the lawsuit says that students were emotionally, physically, and psychologically traumatized by their experiences at the Schools. the Province of ontario denies these claims. the court has not decided whether the Plaintiff or the Province of ontario is right. Are you included? You are included in this lawsuit if: • you attended or resided at Drury at any time between 1963 and august 23, 2016 and have not otherwise released your claim • you attended or resided at Sir James Whitney at any time between 1938 and august 23, 2016 and have not otherwise released your claim • you attended or resided at Robarts at any time between 1973 and august 23, 2016 and have not otherwise released your claim • you are the parents, spouses, children or siblings of someone and who is included in the lawsuit and who attended or was in residence at one of the Schools between 1978 and august 23, 2016 • you are an estate trustee for a person who was a student or family member of a student who is included in the lawsuit and that person was living on or after august 10, 2013 Who are the lawyers who represent the class? Koskie Minsky LLP are the lawyers for the plaintiff and the class. You don’t have to pay Koskie Minsky LLP for this case.
instead, the lawyers will be paid only if there is recovery of money or other benefits for the class. if there is success, the lawyers would either receive a portion of recovery or be paid by the Province of ontario. What are your options? Stay In the Class Action: You do not have to do anything to stay in the class action. You will be legally bound by all orders and judgments of the court, and you will not be able to sue independently the Province of ontario about the legal claims in this case. if money or benefits are obtained, you will be notified about how to ask for a share. Staying in this Class will not impact the residence or services and supports received by class members from community based agencies which are funded by the Province of Ontario. Get Out of the Class Action: if you want to keep your independent right to sue the Province of ontario over the claims in this case or if you do not wish to be bound by the orders and judgments of this case, you need to opt out or remove yourself. if you remove yourself, you cannot get any money or benefits from this lawsuit. to ask to be removed, send a letter to School abuse class action administrator, c/o crawford & company inc., 3-505 133 Weber St. N., Waterloo oN N2J 3g9 or go to www.Schoolsforthedeafclassaction.ca. the letter should say that you want to be removed from Welsh v. ontario class action and must include your name, address, telephone number and/or email address, and signature. the deadline to opt out is September 1, 2017.
