Hospitals make info on mergers available Hospitals in Scarborough and Durham Region are letting people ask questions about upcoming mergers in both regions. The Scarborough Hospital’s General and Birchmount campuses are getting set to amalgamate with the Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary to form a new hospital by Nov. 1. In Durham, the AjaxPickering campus of RVHS, which is being broken up, would become part of Oshawa’s Lakeridge Health. Both mergers were directed by Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins in April, when he announced he supported all findings of an expert panel he appointed a year before.

As the date approaches, the three hospitals on Tuesday, jointly announced a website, www.ourhospitals.ca, they said will give interested people an “opportunity to help shape the future of health care delivery in Durham and Scarborough.” A release said the site allows visitors to comment or read some background material on each merger, ask questions and register for telephone town halls. Public meetings or roundtables were also promised by the hospitals. So far, no schedule for these has appeared on the site, but the hospitals have promised to add new information and “details of upcoming community engagement opportunities.”

BREATHE EASY
W
hat do you do when a solid eight hours of sleep still leaves you feeling exhausted and listless in the morning? For millions of Canadians suffering from sleep apnea, that’s a daily occurrence, and while sleep apnea itself may not be deadly, its side effects can be severe, particularly when they add up over weeks, months or years. Sleep apnea is an obstruction of the trachea during sleep, which stops breathing and causes fits of wakefulness. In serious cases, people can be jolted awake more than 60 times an hour, and while the body returns to sleep quickly, the condition prevents deep sleep. “Your sleep becomes mincemeat,” said Dr. T. Douglas Bradley, director of the University Health Network Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Toronto General Hospital Sleep Research Labs. “It’s like sticking a cork down your throat, so you struggle to breathe because your airway’s obstructed and you can’t get any air in your lungs. That goes on for a minimum of 10 seconds and can last up to a minute and a half. Eventually the asphyxia wakes you up and when that happens, there’s a sudden increase in the tone of the muscles in the throat, so the throat opens, usually with a loud snore.” Sleep apnea affects some 10 per cent of the population in North America, with men three times more likely to suffer from the condition. Age is a factor – the average sleep apnea patient is 45 years old – and obesity and inactivity are strong contributing factors. Bradley noted that sleep apnea is disruptive not only to the sufferer, but to their partners as well, as those suffering from the condition snore loudly through-

At left, Dr. Doug Bradley of Toronto Rehab shows off a new Bresotec device that will allow people to test themselves for sleep apnea at home. out the night. The effects on the sufferer, however, can be debilitating. “You feel like you’ve been hit by a 10-ton truck when you get up in the morning, often with headaches, feeling like you’d like
to go back to bed again,” he said. The ensuing sleepiness throughout the day can lead to a three to fourfold increase in the incidence of getting involved in motor vehicle accidents and
industrial accidents. Beyond that, sufferers tend to toss and turn throughout the night and can suffer a loss of shortterm memory and libido. There are also potential long-term cardiovascular
health effects, with sleep apnea sufferers seeing a two to fourfold increase in the incidence of high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. “When you fall asleep, your cardiovascular system
relaxes just like the muscles in the rest of the body, so your blood pressure goes down, your heart rate goes down, oxygen consumption by the heart goes down because the heart’s resting,” Bradley said. “If you keep waking somebody up, you get surges of sympathetic (nervous system) activity that raise the heart rate, raise the blood pressure and increase the pumping activity of the heart at a time when it should be resting.” Potential cures for sleep apnea are varied, depending on the severity of the case. Bradley noted that prevention is the greatest cure – by maintaining a healthy body weight and keeping active, the risk of developing the condition is greatly reduced. Other simple solutions include sleeping on your side or having your tonsils removed if they are particularly large, though these only serve to help some patients. For many, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks are the best treatment. Worn overnight, the face masks blow air through the nose and into the back of the throat to keep the airway open. “This controls sleep apnea, but it doesn’t cure it,” Bradley said. Securing an appointment in a sleep clinic to get diagnosed can be difficult. To help with the backlog, Bradley worked with a group of partners to form BresoTec, a company that has developed a home testing kit. A face mask – the BresoDX – captures sleep sounds in the patient’s home through a microphone and patients can simply mail in a chip containing the recording for analysis. “It makes diagnosis easier and we can look at a patient’s full night’s sleep in less than five minutes,” Bradley said. good night’s sleep – it’s something many of us take for granted. But for millions of Canadians who suffer from sleep apnea, a restful sleep is hard to come by. With 10 per cent of the North American population impacted by this sleep disorder, someone you know may be experiencing the side effects of sleep apnea, which can be severe and debilitating. As Dr. T. CORK DOWN THROAT
Bradley gives a clearer picture of what sleep apnea is by explaining that “it’s like sticking a cork down your throat, so you struggle to breathe because your airway’s obstructed.” That can go on for a minimum of 10 seconds and can OuR ViEW astoundingly last up to a minute and a half. As a result, Prevention in serious cases, people can be jolted awake more than 60 among the times an hour, preventing deep best cures sleep. Sufferers can also experience potential long-term cardiovascular health effects such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. The effects can go beyond the bedroom as the ensuing sleepiness throughout the day can lead to a fourfold increase in the incidence of getting involved in motor vehicle and industrial accidents. NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM
Studies show men are three times more likely to suffer from the condition with age playing a factor as well as obesity and inactivity. But all is not doom and gloom with the report highlighting potential cures for sleep apnea depending on the severity of the case. Simple solutions include sleeping on your side or wearing a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, which blows air through the nose and into the back of the throat to keep the airway open. But as it is with most health-related issues, Bradley iterated that prevention is the greatest cure. If you’re looking for another reason to exercise, maintain a healthy body weight and keep active, you can add greatly reducing the risk of developing sleep apnea to the list.

Ford book may lead to unintended consequences Wa t c h i n g D o u g F o r d announce that Harper Collins will soon be releasing another Ford book – Ford Nation: “the most exciting book that this country’s ever seen when it comes to politics”– I was struck with a pang of sympathy. The sympathy is not for my colleagues in the press or the politicians at city hall, who Doug Ford promised would be spared no indignity in Ford Nation’s pages. My heart really goes out to the writer – or possibly team of writers and editors, as Ford was vague about the specifics – who were contracted by Harper Collins to pen this tell-all authorized sort-of biographical memoir of Rob and Doug Ford’s adventures at the helm of Toronto. It made me think of Tony Schwartz. He did a similar job three decades ago, for New York real estate mogul Donald Trump, when he wrote “The Art of the Deal” on Trump’s behalf. He wasn’t precisely
david nickle the city a ghost writer – he shared the byline with Trump, right there on the cover, and also split the royalties and the advance. By all accounts, he did good work for good pay. Maybe too good. Earlier this year, Schwartz, through an interview in The New Yorker magazine, expressed “deep remorse” for helping Trump build his reputation as a touch-ofgold entrepreneur, which in turn helped him rise through and above the others for the Republican nomination in 2016 and win the thing. Maybe he’ll win the presidency, and if he does…“I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization,” Schwartz was quoted saying. Thank heaven there are no nuclear codes associ-
ated with the jobs that Doug Ford made clear he might just be seeking – the mayoralty of Toronto, the premiership of Ontario, or the office of Prime Minister of Canada. But Doug Ford left no doubt that the book, subtitled “Two Brothers, One Vision,” is at the very least coincidental with his re-entry into Canadian electoral politics. When it’s released Nov. 22, he promised to criss-cross the country ostensibly to drum up sales but also to meet people. As to when he will reveal his political plans? Sometime within the next year, Ford promised. It’s hard to say how this strategy will play out for Ford. He does have a base and a profile – the fact that he was able to summon half of Toronto’s news media to his house in Etobicoke for nothing more specific than a “special” announcement Tuesday morning is testament to that. And he does have an image
to rehabilitate: as much as the Ford Nation base of support continues to percolate, a winning majority of Torontonians rejected him for mayor in part because of the way he and his brother comported themselves while in office as councillor and mayor respectively. Will a book tour do the job? Promoting her autobiography My Journey certainly didn’t help Olivia Chow hold onto her early lead in polls in the 2014 mayoral race. On the other hand, a well-penned, well-timed book can do a lot to turn a troubling narrative into a triumphant one – particularly as the most troubling elements recede further into history. And that can open the door… Well, it can open the door to all sorts of things. Just ask Tony Schwartz.

Transit fairness on the table at Scarborough meeting RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com
member Nirmalan Vijeyakumar. “This will be an actual race,” said Vijeyakumar. “We’re going run from the top to the bottom to show the ridiculousness of the cuts.”
Scarbororough transit activist Brenda Thompson senses something is different. “There’s something happening here,” said Thompson, a member of Scarborough Transit Action (STA), which hosted an information session for members and non-members alike this week. “People are getting mobilized and they want things to change.”
Deputations
LocaL concerns The session, Transit Fairness Night hosted at the East Scarborough Storefront, was billed as an opportunity to get familiar with local concerns pushed by STA and umbrella group TTCriders, with attendees breaking into groups to discuss issues like building the Eglinton Crosstown LRT extension east of Kennedy Station, pushing for a low income transit pass and railing against likely budget cuts to the TTC. Budget cuts could mean reductions to service levels in transit-starved Scarborough, said

Thompson, or another hike in fares. “It doesn’t look very good,” she said. In protest, TTCriders is planning a noon rally at city hall Wednesday, Sept. 28, prior to the TTC’s monthly
board of commissioners meeting. Like it’s done in the past, the group hinted it will disrupt the meeting proceedings to voice its opposition to any reductions in service. Toronto Mayor John Tory has called on the TTC to trim 2.6 per
cent from next year’s operating budget, which is already facing a shortfall due to lower revenues than projected so far in 2016. For the rally, the group plans to hold a “race to bottom” to illustrate its concerns about TTC cuts, said group
The group also plans to make individual deputations to the TTC board, which is expected to debate how to locate the nearly $200 million it needs in spending cuts, which senior TTC leadership has suggested can’t be achieved without cutting service. Leading up to the rally TTCriders is launching a new social media campaign, lampooning Mayor Tory’s bid to “make North America’s most efficient transit system even more efficient”. So Efficient it Hurts seeks humorous and outrageous solutions for cutting TTC spending even further. “We’re hoping Tory will see our dumb and funny suggestions and realize it doesn’t make sense to cut more from a transit system which has the lowest fare subsidy in North America,” said Vijeyakumar. He invited TTC users to submit their own ideas until Sept. 28.

obituary
McCormack remembered as ‘tried and true’ police officer ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Bill McCormack is being remembered as a respected homicide investigator and a popular police chief who often walked the beat. McCormack, who served as Metro Toronto Police chief from 1989 to 1995, died last Thursday at age 83. “He paved the way for community outreach. There was no chief before him who would go out and do the community interaction that he would do,” retired Insp. Mike Sale said. “As the chief of police, he’d put his uniform on, grab a couple of people from a local division and … go walking through the neighbourhood to meet people. He was always engaging.” Sale was a 19-year-old cadet when he first met McCormack in the early 1970s. “He was a gentleman. He was extremely cordial,” Sale said. A longtime Scarborough resident, McCormack served as a homicide detective throughout the ‘70s and was involved in several high-profile investigations. “In fact, he was involved in the

most expensive homicide investigation ever undertaken up to that time, and that was the murder of Trevor Poll.” Poll was killed with a crowbar by four men while he worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant overnight. The suspects fled the country; McCormack and his team “chased them all over North America,” Sale said.
“One ended up in a gunfight with the police in Dallas, Texas and another one ended up in Los Angeles,” Sale said. “When our team went down … to pick up the guys for this murder, the American police were overwhelmed at how much effort went into the investigation for an ordinary every day dishwasher.” The homicide squad during
McCormack’s tenure had a nearly perfect clearance rate. In 1979, McCormack was promoted to inspector and served stints at 52 Division and internal affairs. In 1982, he was promoted again and tasked with establishing a public affairs unit. “Bill McCormack was a tried and true and respected street police officer and homicide squad detective and when he moved over to community services that brought a lot of credibility to the function,” Sale said. “He was big on public education, crime prevention, community interaction and participation. … He helped advance the police force at a critical time in its history.” When police chief Jack Ackroyd suddenly and surprisingly announced his retirement in 1984, Jack Marks was appointed chief and McCormack was promoted deputy chief. McCormack became chief five years later and was extremely popular with the rank and file during his six-year tenure. “From the first day to the last, there never was a time when he didn’t enjoy pretty wide support
and respect from the people on the police service,” Sale said. “He was one of the most popular (chiefs) of all time.” McCormack also served as president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. “He travelled Canada speaking in both official languages representing the chiefs of police in Canada,” Sale said. “He was the common man and used to interact with the chiefs of police across Canada enthusiastically regardless of the size of the police force they represented.” McCormack was born in BeauBassin, Mauritius and graduated from Atlantic College in Dublin. He has five children, four of whom became police officers. His son Michael is the current president of the Toronto Police Association. “He was a strong family person,” Sale said. “Bill McCormack could’ve gone to the FBI academy. He didn’t go because that was 11 weeks away from his home. … He really felt the need to be close to his family at all times.” His funeral was held Monday, Sept. 12, at St. Paul’s Basilica in downtown Toronto.

Birch Cliff P.S. plans 100th anniversary celebrations Southwest Scarborough’s Birch Cliff Public School hosts its 100th anniversary celebrations with a number of events on Sept. 23 and 24. The school first opened its doors to 45 students on Sept. 5, 1916 at the northwest corner of Kingston Road and Birchcliff Avenue. The school’s
first principal was Mrs. E. E. Reece, and she recorded the history of the first years of the school in a journal that highlighted students’ participation in local fairs and contributions to support Canadian soldiers in the First World War. A number of events are planned to
celebrate the 100th anniversary. On Friday, Sept. 23, from noon to 4 p.m., the school’s gym and fields will see Games From The Past being played, and alumni both young and old are invited to join in. That evening there will be a Pub Night at the Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 13, at 1577 Kingston Rd., starting at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 24, there will be an open house at the school starting at 11 a.m. There will be alumni rooms from each decade set up in the school. From 1 to 2 p.m. there will be the raising of a centennial
flag and a time capsule event. And on Saturday night there is an Alumni and Parent Dinner starting at 7 p.m. at the Qssis Banquet Hall, 3474 Kingston Rd. For more info on the school and the 100th anniversary plans, go to www.birchcliffps100th.com
Do you have good hearing but find listening tiring? Research has shown that even people with minimal hearing loss find listening to be tiring. Swiss based hearing aid technology can help by limiting the effort needed by the brain to understand speech. Listening and understanding speech are an important part of everyday communications. However, this can be challenging for people with normal hearing, and even more trying for people with hearing loss. Many of our everyday environments are not ideal. Poor acoustics, lack of visual cues (e.g. on-the phone or talking from another room), muffled speech, and background noise limit our ability to understand speech. This results in asking people to repeat themselves, straining to hear, and possibly avoiding group discussions. A rising field of study by hearing researchers is listening effort. This can be defined as the amount of cognitive resources that are being used to process and understand speech. Research suggests that continued listening effort is linked to

This cutting-edge hearing technology allows hearing aids to automatically adapt to any listening environment. In addition to understanding speech easier, less effort is required to listen. The rechargeable system is easy to use and provides 24 hours of hearing with only one charge.

A person who is straining to hear is using more brain power to understand speech. The more brain power needed, the more tired that person is going to feel. A growing body of research suggests that hearing aids may reduce listening effort, and in return mental fatigue when processing speech in noise. Digital Noise Reduction technology has been shown to

mike adler edges of toronto And yet people do this in Scarborough and North York, where there’s no overnight parking and driveway space is limited. In Scarborough, 2,298 tickets were issued for boulevard parking from January 2015 to April 2016 – 572 for parking on driveway entrances and 1,726 for parking on “grassed areas” in the boulevard. The one place you can leave cars below the sidewalk without fear of a fine is Shoreham Drive, west of Jane Street. Toronto Council made that official in April 2015. Long before this, people on that part of Shoreham parked on their unusually long driveway aprons and no one got tickets, Councillor Anthony Perruzza said. That changed when one person started complaining, but council passed an exception. The city calls this a pilot project, but it’s just giving residents what they had before, said Perruzza. “Why wouldn’t we allow
them? The apron is really large.” But if people park legally on aprons on Shoreham, why can’t it be done on sections of Scarborough’s Painted Post Drive, which city staff admits are similar? Again, it’s something residents there already do, and Glenn De Baeremaeker, their councillor, wants Painted Post to be another “pilot.” His colleagues put off dealing with this request three times, but it returns in October. For some Scarborough councillors, granting this one obscure exception to the rules goes beyond the potential for more accidents. It invites invasion. Apron parking will “turn our streets into a parking lot,” Ron Moeser wrote, and provide “opportunity to have more tenants, basement apartments, and potential rooming houses.” Families harassed by councillors in their driveways may catch a break, too.

As a Scarborough woman came home last May, she had an argument with Jim Karygiannis, her local councillor, about how her family parked its cars. He “threatened to have their cars towed,” she told the City of Toronto’s integrity commissioner, because the family was parking on the driveway “apron.” What happened next is recorded in the woman’s complaint: Karygiannis returned, photographed the cars, posted an image on Twitter, confronted her father in a shisha bar, called parking enforcement several times – until her family got tickets. The commissioner found the councillor’s repeated efforts at “educating” the family about something it had done for years “were intimidating and harassing.” But except for one street in North York, you can’t legally park on your driveway anywhere in Toronto on the “boulevard” between the curb and sidewalk – and strictly speaking, in any space up to your property line even if you don’t have a sidewalk.

Options for Davenport says it joined an advisory group for the Davenport Diamond rail bridge, which it opposes, to make sure the voices of its members are heard. The group, which boasts 1,500 members, has long opposed Metrolinx’s plan to replace the Diamond rail crossing with a bridge, having commissioned its own study to point out the flaws it sees in the plan. That hasn’t stopped Metrolinx from proceeding with the project, which received official approval in August from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to proceed. ‘Inhospitable’ Scarborough Centre area focus of study MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
ings and Scarborough Rapid Transit stations They will be at the McCowan RT station Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 3 to 7 p.m. to introduce the study, and the study’s first public meeting will be on Nov. 29 at the Scarborough Civic Centre, Alan Filipuzzi, a senior transportation planner for the city, said Monday.
Toronto politicians who backed the Scarborough Subway see Scarborough Centre as a urban node about to explode with development. But at least one of them, Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker, considers the area’s road pattern “a chaotic bowl of spaghetti,” and the spaces between unsafe or uninviting for people on foot, “inhospitable to normal human beings.” Which may explain the launch of Scarborough Centre on the Move, a new city-led study covering all future transportation needs of properties from Midland Avenue to Markham Road, and between Ellesmere Road and Hwy. 401. Planning staff have been visiting local office build-
Kingston Road condo sparks opposition MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Neighbours of a Kingston Road car wash in Scarborough Village are campaigning to keep a proposed condominium off the property. A developer had applied for an Official Plan and zoning change which would allow an eight-storey building at 3655 Kingston Rd., which is at Muir Drive just east of Eglinton Avenue. Members of a Facebook group “Stop the Highrise on Muir” say they’re not against developing the lot, but want to keep its ‘neighbourhoods” designation limiting buildings to four storeys or less. “Developers should not be able to roll over a parcel that’s been designated ‘neighbourhood’ just because they want to make more money off of a very small piece of land,” one recent post added. Some residents have installed lawn signs saying “Stop High Rise on Car Wash Site,” and on Wednesday, Sept. 7, several rallied in front of
Scarborough Civic Centre and its surroundings, and more recently, the planning precinct east of McCowan Road. An unfriendliness to pedestrians was noted: some proposed spanning McCowan north of Ellesmere and creating a market and park on top on the road. De Baeremaeker, who has most of the area in his ward, said drivers are sometimes too confused by looping local roads to find the Scarborough Civic Centre or even the mall. Though it may take decades, the councillor expects the city will find ways to “normalize” Scarborough Centre roads into a grid as development continues. “We want to bring some vibrancy and life to that area,” he said. More on the study is at www.toronto.ca/sconthemove
How is area used? Though the outcome will be closely tied to the coming Bloor-Danforth subway extension to Scarborough Town Centre, planners are also trying to understand how people use Scarborough Centre, and what they’d like to see improve, said Filipuzzi, who acknowledged the area’s pedestrian links are “a bit sporadic,” and its cycling network “a blank canvass.” The city has studied the

the car wash. Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford, who was at the demonstration, thinks some of the group’s concerns are valid. “They have every right to do what they’re doing,” he said. A preliminary city report in January pegs the initial proposal for the building at 96 units and eight storeys – technically, not tall enough to be a highrise – but months later, during a public meeting, the developer suggested it could be 10 storeys, Crawford said. Staff are waiting to see

revisions from the developer before the application returns to Scarborough Community Council, he added on Friday. The city report notes Kingston Road is considered to be an “avenue” where intensification is encouraged, as well as a higher-order transit corridor, The Eglinton East Light-Rail-Transit line is being planned through the area. Single detached homes are around the car-wash lot to the south, but to the north are apartment buildings, some of which are twice as high as the proposed condominium.

$100 million doesn’t cut it any more for United Way
“
Agency sets ambitious fundraising goal for its 2016 campaign Justin skinner jskinner@insidetoronto.com A year after the United Way merged its Toronto and York Region operations, the organization has launched an ambitious and record-setting yearly campaign for the area. The United Way Toronto & York Region managed to top $100 million in donations over the past year, and is looking to top that total this year, setting a goal of $101.5 million. At a campaign launch event at RBC WaterPark Place on Queens Quay West on Tuesday, United Way CEO Daniele Zanotti said the goal reflects the consolidated organization’s growth in fundraising power. “One year into our merged United Way Toronto & York Region, what an impact we have had together,” he said. “Last year, we raised a record $100,250,000 for these communities from Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario.” Zanotti said the merger between

the Toronto and York Region branches led to a three per cent increase in overall funding. “That’s something we hadn’t experienced in York Region in years and years,” he said. “Companies that have their head offices in Toronto or York Region are now more able to mobilize and come together.”
The funds raised by the United Way Toronto & York Region will support some 220 member agencies throughout the regions, with a focus on community and neighbourhoodbuilding, youth employment and poverty reduction. The services that the United Way supports help in many ways,
including helping young people like Nivethan Amirthalingam find work. He took part in United Way-funded networking opportunities to secure a job at RBC. “It really helped me develop my professional network and made me a better person overall,” he said. At the campaign launch event,
United Way 2016 campaign chair Dave McKay of RBC announced a $1-million matching grant by longtime United Way supporters Mike and Martha Pederson. He pointed out the impact money donated to the organization plays a pivotal role in helping vulnerable residents find the supports they need. “The United Way plays such a pivotal role in bringing community together and helping those (vulnerable people) face risks and challenges in their lives,” he said.

SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID!
MODEL
CLEAROUT
A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands!
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce
the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

World Cup of Hockey lacks oomph Preparing students for ‘real world’ I am having a little trouble getting excited about the World Cup of Hockey, scheduled for Sept. 17 to Oct. 1 at the Air Canada Centre. Olympic hockey I can get behind. Especially when the men’s team wins gold as they did in 2010 and 2014. Love the women’s hockey at the Olympics. Many of the same players are involved, but I think the World Cup lacks a certain oomph around the hockey world. On the local side, GTA products Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Tyler Seguin and Alex Pietrangelo will lace up for Canada, while Connor McDavid and Sean Monahan may be of interest for Team North America. I have been hearing various things around town, like it’s a cash grab, it’s Gary Bettman’s baby, and that there is little appetite for a World Cup of Hockey soon after the 2014 Olympics. I have a few questions myself. With the last World Cup taking place in 2004 why did it take so long for them to rein-

AROUND troduce it? And why the World Cup? Most have a soft spot for the Canada Cup, but the World Cup? That’s for soccer isn’t it. Canada topped Finland 3-2 in the 2004 final. Anyone remember? I thought not. I’m curious about Team Europe. Apparently, it is comprised of players from France, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria and Norway. What will be the language of instruction for these players? If someone yells “Buddy, donnez moi le rondelle” as they skate down the wing, will they be slipped a pass? Will someone who says “guten morgen” in the dressing room simply be ignored if no one else speaks German, or will this be mistaken for the question “where is Morgan Rielly?” More importantly, what national anthem will they play before the games for Team Europe? ready for four-hour games as the national anthems of all of the above are all played to appropriately honour the players from the countries involved. And if Colin Kaepernick was there, would he sit for all of the national anthems of all these lovely countries? What about Team North America under 23s? Young stars from Canada and U.S. might be interesting to watch, including young Leafs Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews. It’s hard to imagine young players from these countries being anything but bitter rivals, yet they have to play together. Team North America looked good in dismantling Team Europe in an exhibition game, and, hey, those early Canada/U.S. exhibition games are very spirited. So let the games begin. MIND hustler, ready to work independently, sell yourself and network. You’ve got to be entrepreneurial-minded.” These are the words I’m saying to anyone younger than me that will listen. I tell them that because it’s my own experience. While I haven’t changed my career seven times per se, I have had to be very creative in how I’ve applied my acquired skills in order to make ends meet. Yes, I’ve been a reporter and editor, but I’ve also proofread everything from speeches to master’s thesis papers. I’ve worked at a children’s mental health organization co-ordinating and running a youth-led multimedia journalism program. I’ve dabbled in organizing events and doing public relations. The only way I can guarantee my bills are paid and there is food in my fridge is by being diligent and resource-
ful, delivering what I say I will when I say I will and staying on top of my e-mail. Children growing up now will need to learn early on that the mentality of “graduate from school, get a good job, retire happily” is one of the past. They will understand quickly what it means to do more with less and to clock in 70-hour work weeks. It could be viewed as an incredibly scary time, or an incredibly exciting one, but with youth unemployment still a pressing issue in Scarborough, it is important that we are honest with our children and youth. As they dive into the 2016-17 school year, we have to ensure that along with mathematics, English and science, teachers are willing to tackle the subject of the “real world” and truly prepare students for what’s awaiting, and most importantly, how to navigate it. “You’re probably going to change your career six or seven times in your life.” I can’t say I remember a lot from my days attending Scarborough’s Berner Trail Jr. P. S., but I do remember those words coming from my Grade 3 teacher’s mouth. At the time I didn’t have a clue as to what career I wanted for myself, let alone seven. What my Grade 3 teacher forgot to mention, though, was that even the concept of a career and what it meant would drastically change by the time we began our first of seven. Full-time. Permanent. With benefits. Those are not words my generation hears often. And my guess is for future generations, those words will grow more scarce. It’s been a decade since I graduated from college and contract work is all I’ve known. I’ve worked a full-time contract once. I’ve had benefits for all of eight months. I’ve been permanent never. “It’s a freelance, part-time world. You’ve got to be a

Demonstrators picketed a Malvern laundry last month while calling on the Ontario government to slap harsher penalties on employers who violate worker rights. Anzdin Somani, CEO of Paragon Linen and Laundry Services, was called a “bad boss” during a bus tour of Scarborough organized by staff of East Toronto legal aid clinics. “Anzdin, Anzdin, you’re no good, treat your workers like you should,” the group chanted on Aug. 12 near the doors of Paragon, described on Somani’s LinkedIn profile as “one of the largest privately owned laundries in all of Canada,” with “over 140 dedicated employees.” After the short demonstration, Somani could not be reached for comment, but this Monday, Sept. 12, he spoke on his company’s behalf, saying Paragon will address any payroll irregularities protestors alleged were happening there. Legal clinic representatives said they’ve heard complaints for years from many of the industrial laundry’s employees, who are mostly Tamil-speaking and new to Canada. In a written statement read aloud at the protest, Santhini Suhapiramanm said she
spent seven years working at Paragon, and is owed $9,000 because she was never given overtime, public holiday or vacation pay. “If my wages are not paid I will be back again and again until I get paid,” said Suhapiramanm, who has asked West Scarborough Legal Services to help her file a claim against the company. Somani said he has asked his administrative team to review Paragon’s payroll and tell him whether there have been any errors. “We outsource our payrolls to an outside firm, and have contacted them as well,” he said. “We will do our best to resolve any past payroll errors in a way that is in keeping with our company’s values and its appreciation of its talented and hardworking employees.” Outside Paragon last month, Ram Selvarajah, a member of a new support group affiliated with the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, the Tamil Workers Network, called Paragon employees “people who have no voice.” “We’re not asking for more than they signed up for,” he said. An employer who cheats enough workers out of $10 in overtime pay might see that add up to a nice Mercedes, said Selvarajah, but “that $10 is a meal for a family.”
But both he and people involved in a legal aid clinic project called TEELS - Toronto E a s t Em p l oy m e n t L a w Services, which takes on such employers from clinics east of Yonge Street - said many employees don’t understand their rights, and employers face little or no penalties for holding back pay or having unsafe conditions. In front of the Ontario Ministry of Labour office on Midland Avenue. John No of Parkdale Community Legal Services argued it actually makes business sense for employers to break the law because there aren’t enough provincial investigations of workplaces and workers must complain as individuals. Workers are frightened of punishments if they complain, so they should be allowed to do it anonymously, said Sarah Charow, a lawyer with Scarborough Community Legal Services who said the ministry must mete out harsher, more expensive punishments to unfair bosses. The province released an interim report on Ontario’s employment standards, the Changing Workplace Review, last month, and is taking submissions on it until Oct. 14. Charow and others see the review as an opportunity, and think the Liberal government is willing to listen to their concerns.

Scarborough Theatre Guild’s The Psychic an entertaining ride MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com Scarborough Theatre Guild opened their 58th season with a show that provides a glimpse into the world of a writer whose art is seemingly imitating his life. The Psychic, by Sam Bobrick, tells the tale of Adam (Frank DeFrancesco), a writer who in an attempt to make some extra money, pretends to be a psychic. A murder-mystery novelist, Adam’s career is tanking, and being a psychic seems like a better idea than focussing on writers block and continual rejection letters. His first “client” is a woman named Laura (Carolyn Tutchener), who wants advice on her failing marriage. The encounter is semibizarre and gives the audience the first dose of information to ponder. Laura comments on his dingy basement apartment, the psychic sign in the window written in crayon, and Adam is painfully awkward around Laura while he tries to “read” for her. A fter a couple of minutes, it becomes clear that Adam is no more a psychic than a best-selling novelist, and Laura decides to get to the point. Seems her husband Roy (Rouvan Silogix) has had an affair with a woman named Rita (Samantha Wymes), and now wants to make amends
by taking her on a trip to Paris. This seems odd to Laura because she knows Roy has money troubles and can’t afford the trip. While Adam fails to give Laura any solid advice on whether she should go to Paris, they do strike up a friendship. This, however, creates a ripple effect that finds them both immersed in a murder-mystery that is right out of a best-selling novel. It has all the elements: murders, gangsters like Johnny Bubbles (Fabio Saposnik), mistresses like Rita, the policeman on the case, Detective Coslow (Drew Smylie), and an investigation that somehow always leads back to Adam and his rundown basement apartment. As vague as this description is, it’s to keep the integrity of the story. Just know that it’s a creatively-written script that will make you laugh while taking you on an entertaining ride into the mind of frustrated writer. Kevin Shaver is the ideal director for this uniquely funny play, and he does a fantastic job in giving what could be a complicated script the right balance of being easily understood while still keeping the element of surprise until the end. The actors in this show are nothing short of fantastic. Each has a natural ease both in playing their individual characters and in their comedic timing together.
DeFrancesco’s makes a fantastic Scarborough Theatre debut as the awkward around women, down-on-his-luck writer, Adam. He is consistent throughout the entire show (and onstage for all of it), and his interactions with each of the characters is amazing to watch. Silogix as the cheating husband Roy is an obvious comedic talent, and his scenes are full of energy and laughs. As are the scenes with Saposnik as the typical gangster; he is funny, has great timing, and has the best one-liners in the show. Smylie is great as Detective Coslow; he’s a hard-nosed detective who loves romance novels, which should describe why he is funny to watch in this murder-mystery scenario. Wymes plays the mistress Rita with the perfect balance of being both alluring and funny, and Tutchener is believable, funny and convincing as the scorned wife looking for answers. T h i s s h ow o f f e r s u p comedy and a unique journey with an ending you won’t see coming. The Psychic runs until Sept. 24, 8 p.m., at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 416-267-9292, or by visiting www.theatrescarborough.com
Film festival at subway stations continues A self-styled commuter film festival has proven TUFF enough to return for its 10th year of screenings. There was some concern the Toronto Urban Film Festival would end after last year due to funding concerns, but not only is TUFF back, it’s bigger than ever, says executive director and founder Sharon Switzer. “Last year, there were a whole lot of changes going on, but the intention was always to continue,” said Switzer during an interview with Metroland Media Toronto this week. “We’re hoping to keep it going for another 10
years.” The festival has drawn praise for the unique manner it showcases cinema: on video screens found on TTC subway platforms. TUFF also runs at the same time as the Toronto International Film Festival, at a time when local interest in independent cinema is at fever pitch. Switzer said she was approached by festival sponsor Pattison Onestop, which maintains and operates the TTC’s ad space as well as all subway platform video screens, to continue TUFF for another year. “I had to do no convincing,
Pattison contacted me and said ‘we’d like to continue’,” she said. “Pattison decided they appreciate and value the festival enough to put in 100 per cent of the funding this year, which is different from the past. They have renewed and extended investment in the festival.” This year’s offerings range from absurdist animations to Dystopian narratives, taking less time to watch than wait for the train. Over nine days, 87 films will be screened from 61 countries, including Germany, Iran, Bangladesh and Canada. TUFF runs until Sept. 18.

Mayor experiences heat, delays during subway ride from Kennedy to Kipling
$15
Toronto Mayor John Tory fulfilled his pledge to ride a sweltering subway car and experience firsthand a trip on the congested Bloor line during rush hour. Tory rode with Bianca Spence, a Toronto woman fed up with the lack of air conditioning on Bloor line trains. Over the course of a summer full of high temperatures, Spence tweeted the mayor almost daily, eventually convincing him to ride with her and get a sense of what TTC riders have to deal with on a daily basis. “I’m just a regular, warm, sweaty, disgruntled commuter. I spoke up to the point of absurdity on behalf of a lot of my fellow commuters,” said Spence at Kipling station following her Wednesday, morning ride last week with Tory. “Hopefully it gave him a better idea of what it’s like on the ground.” She said the conditions for the ride were ideal. “It was as bad as I’ve ever seen it before,” she said. “Hot, crowded. It was absolutely perfect for what I wanted (Tory) to experience.” Tory and Spence were scheduled to arrive at Kipling by 8:30 a.m. following their subway ride that originated at Kennedy, at the opposite

end of the subway line. They ended up arriving more than 30 minutes late. Describing his experience, Tory said not only was it hot, but the train experienced multiple delays. “It was kind of a perfect storm, we had the discomfort of a hot car and a transit system experiencing delays causing people to fret,” Tory said. Still, the mayor didn’t back down from his edict the TTC and city departments each locate 2.6 per cent in cost savings for next year. Through
the budget committee, he has mandated every department submit a list of potential cuts to implement. TTC brass has suggested cutting that amount will likely mean reductions in service, meaning more congestion and delays. But Tory said it was far too soon in the budget process to determine if the cuts are necessary. “We’re going to look at the lists and determine the impact on people and the city, and then we’ll make some decisions,” he said.
Runs set for Cedarbrook, Colonel Danforth parks
Visit www.Tradyo.com Buy and sell in your neighbourhood.
>>>from page 1 The Scarborough Terry Fox Run takes place in Cedarbrook Park, 91 Eastpark Blvd., west of Markham Road and south of Lawrence Avenue. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk goes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It follows a 10-kilometre route through Cedarbrook and Thomson Park. Organizers are Paul and Janet Ainslie, and they can be reached at paulandjanetainslie@sympatico.ca The Terry Fox Run is held annually in memory of Fox
who at the age of 20 started his Marathon of Hope in April 1980 in Newfoundland. Fox’s dream was to run across Canada, despite the fact he had lost right leg to cancer, to help raise funds and awareness of cancer. However, Fox was unable to finish his cross-country run. The Marathon of Hope ended on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, ON, as Fox was forced to stop because cancer had spread to his lungs. Fox completed 3,339 miles of his run, but Canadians refused to let his dream
die and the first Terry Fox Run was held in September 1981. Before his death at the age of 22 on June 28, 1981, Fox knew that runs in his name were being planned to carry on his dream. He also has a strong connection with Scarborough as the Marathon of Hope stopped in the community and Fox spoke to huge crowds during an emotional event at the Scarborough Civic Centre on July 10, 1980. Passed away at his home in Peterborough on Thursday September 1st in his 89th year. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion Geraldine (nee MacLeod) 91, his son Paul Johann, wife Patricia Mary, Brother-in-Law Vic MacLeod and Partner Christel Neumann. Helmut was Opa to Eric Stephen, Andrew James and his wife Stacey and his Great Twin Grandsons Nathan James and Benjamin John. Helmut is also survived by his Cousin Otto Grau (wife Irma) of Simcoe and by his Nephews and Niece in Germany, Dieter Kuebler (wife Christa) and Gerhard Kuebler (wife Anita), Inge Grotkamp. Helmut was born in Stuttgart Germany in 1928. Following the war, he worked in the Stuttgart Train Station, after which he emigrated to Canada in 1951. He worked as a Tobacco picker, a Union Station information clerk, a line worker at Siberling Rubber, an accountant for Heavy Construction Tire Services and finally as a Real Estate Agent working for various brokers, including his Brother-in-Law Vic MacLeod. Helmut’s family is VERY grateful to those passers-by, neighbours, paramedics and E.R staff who were of tremendous help in Helmet’s final hours. Special thanks to doctors, Spink, Ball and Hartleib as well as the Staff on 4A at PRHC, especially Nurses Kathy, Alex, Kourtney and Julie. In memory of Helmut donations can be made to Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted. - R.S.
