The aging animals will also leave behind three years of bitter struggle between Toronto Council, which voted twice to send the elephants south to PAWS, and the zoo’s executives and elephant keepers, who fought the transfer.

The possible merger of The Scarborough Hospital and Rouge Valley Health System could mean anything from the loss of certain jobs to the end of freshly prepared meals arriving at some bedsides.

The CEOs of both Scarborough hospitals have told their staff a merger isn’t “about” eliminating patient services at TSH and RVHS or moving them somewhere else, yet 15 working groups have started looking at “opportunities” for greater efficiencies should a merger be approved.

Next Tuesday, Sept. 24, leaders of both Scarborough hospitals will take direct questions from the public – perhaps with thousands of residents listening – on this study process for the first time.

At 7:10 p.m., an automated call will go out to as many as 15,000 homes in postal codes served by the hospitals, as well as to people who registered in advance.

on the removal of the HOV lanes that run along Eglinton through parts of North York

and Scarborough.

The lanes were constructed

by Metropolitan Toronto in the 1990s to encourage carpooling, cycling and transit use along the busy roadway.

But Berardinetti, who represents the south side of Eglinton, said that what they’re mostly encouraging is congestion.

“I see every morning on Eglinton that two lanes are

heavily overused, one lane Is underused at peak hours,” said Berardinetti. “That’s not meeting with the purpose, which is an effective flow of traffic.”

Staff report Berardinetti wants a report from transportation staff by January, to determine whether the HOV lanes have actually encouraged motorists to

carpool rather than ride on their own.

“We don’t see any studies produced to say that that works,” she said.

“I want to see a report to see if it works. We do many things in the city to improve gridlock, but this is more detrimental.”

Berardinetti pointed out that it will be some time before public transit along the Eglinton corridor is improved,

and the city needs to deal with gridlock right away.

“We have at least seven to nine years before the LRT,” she said.

“Until people have the opportunity to get onto the LRT, give people the opportunity to go where they want to in a timely manner.”

Take care of our waterways I

t’s time to roll up our sleeves, don our rubber boots and take care of our waterways.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is launching this Saturday with volunteers set to collect litter across the city – and country – anywhere water meets land.

People are always needed to pitch in, as the unfortunate fact is, there’s always garbage to clean up.

Last week’s third annual Humber River Clean Up event, organized by Toronto-based 1-800-RID-OF-IT rubbish removal company, saw two tonnes of garbage hauled from the river.

Volunteers found countless water bottles, unidentified metal grates, TVs, car seats, and port-a-potty doors among the refuse. Company founder Rick Crawford said after the event concluded there was still so much debris under the surface, his volunteers could have continued hauling our view junk out of the Humber for five more hours.

And that was just one waterway Shoreline – imagine all the garbage littering cleanup starts the rest of our creeks, rivers and the shoreline along Lake Ontario. this week All this garbage does more than just pose a blight on our environmental landscape. It can affect our water quality and threaten not just human safety and health but that of local wildlife as well. During last year’s shoreline cleanup event, volunteers found 45 entangled animals, including 22 fish, 10 birds (including gulls, swans and herons) and a fox.

Organizers say they see the same junk every year.

Some of the worst offenders are cigarettes and cigarette filters (some 417,000 items collected last year), food wrappers and containers (nearly 99,000 items collected) and plastic bags (nearly 70,000 items collected).

Fortunately, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup offers plenty of opportunity for residents to take a crack at clearing that litter, with nine days of localized cleanups planned across the city.

Pitch in if you can, and take pride in our city by helping to keep it clean. Make it a family outing and use the opportunity to teach the kids about protecting our environment. As litter accumulates all year ‘round, keep an eye out next time you’re at the waterfront or walking a trail along the river. Toss out any you may find or alert the city by calling 311 if you suspect illegal dumping.

Positive economic outlook good news for us all

I

t’s good politics, excellent campaigning, and just generally pleasant to be in front of good news. Which is why the mayor, colleagues from council and city staff all lined up to announce Toronto’s positive economic outlook.

By almost every indicator our results were positive: higher employment, lots of new construction, stable prices and growing retail sales.

Predictably it took seconds for critics to point out Toronto’s positive outlook was due to trends over which the mayor had little control or, in some instances, opposed.

Probably a good deal of the credit is because the outward migration of employment has reversed.

Companies are choosing to move downtown, seeking to be close to skilled employees.

Professionals live in the core there because they like the lifestyle. In turn,

david soknacki beyond the headlines they drive demand for entertainment, housing, transit and retail. It’s a virtuous cycle that must continue to be re-invented or Toronto risks losing its edge.

The number of business establishments based in Toronto peaked in the late 1980s.

But on average those firms were smaller, less competitive, less flexible and weaker than today’s companies.

More than 15 per cent of them perished when Canada’s protective tariff walls disappeared, and business needed to restructure because of the GST. Whereas many other cities had staked their futures to one industry, or have the mixed fortune of being close to natural resources, Toronto had

nothing on which to rely.

Nothing that is, except the skills of its inhabitants.

Over the last 20 years what emerged was Toronto’s reliance on supplying services, along with specialized manufacturing such as at Bombardier’s Downsview plant.

Without a doubt, much of Toronto’s success has been due to a succession of federal and provincial government decisions, which allowed our city to welcome new talent, forced us into global competition, and provided stability for new investment.

But the city government had a critical role to play as well.

Our municipality is responsible for efficient infrastructure including transit, must ensure that businesses can compete from Toronto locations, and needs to provide a welcoming environment for talent.

Just as important, our city must steer clear of

some favourite strategies from the left and right.

For example, deciding which industries will grow and which will be left behind is best left to the market.

Also, Toronto must resist the temptation to think of itself as a low-cost jurisdiction. Companies will locate here as long as we are competitive, not because we have the lowest taxes or highest subsidies.

Standing in front of those microphones with all that good news was a time of celebration, not just for the mayor, his colleagues and city staff, but for all of us.

Yet at the same time it is a reminder that our success requires competitiveness, the ability to be flexible and a clear vision that can only be measured in decades.

Zero Gun Violence Movement to take part in weekend festival MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com For members of the Zero Gun Violence Movement, a summer spent bringing their message to schools and community events across Toronto has been an eye-opener.

“We’re closer - but we’re far, also,” Louis March of the African Canadian Heritage Association said.

Volunteers from ACHA and other groups were part of a 90-day campaign visiting city neighbourhoods - places such as Jane-Finch, Lawrence Heights, Alexandra Park, Malvern, Kingston-Galloway and Parma Court – to talk about violence.

The first half of the summer looked a little more peaceful than in past years, said March, noting the homicide rate in Toronto was down by double digits compared to 2012.

Then came a string of deadly shootings around Jane and Finch.

At summer camps and community organizations, Movement volunteers asked young people what a society would look like in which we are “truly committed” to zero gun violence and there’s no need to pick up a gun.

“They had difficulty coming up with that picture,” March conceded, speculating in many cases those youth have seen violence in their own lives.

“They don’t know what a gun-free society looks like.”

He hopes the conversation continues at the summer campaign’s closing event, the seventh annual Manifesto festival of community and culture this Saturday at the George Brown College Waterfront Campus on Dockside Drive.

Dundas Square.

People working to reduce Toronto gun violence to zero are “close” in that they know what needs to be done, March said, which includes breaking down the “silos” of different groups competing against each other for funds, often for similar community programs.

People providing programs need to assess what’s working and work better together, said March, who is concerned about the young people he said remain on the outside, looking in, even where help is offered.

Part of the campaign was a recognition and celebration of what’s working, said March, who was in Malvern last Monday for a regular spoken word event of RISE Edutainment, at which he counted 75 youth and saw “a very positive vibe.”

Some residents will be invited to small stakeholder meetings, but the hospitals and Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) expect to get the bulk of public feedback through the town halls and an online survey (in English, Chinese and Tamil) at www.leadingforpatients.ca Much is at stake: Last year, the hospitals on their four campuses – TSH’s General and Birchmount, RVHS’s Centenary and its Ajax-Pickering site – together took in about $509 million, provided 4,489 full-time jobs and handled 58,000 surgical cases, 180,000 emergency visits and 538,000 ambulatory visits.

The $1.1-million study, which the LHIN ordered, allows each hospital to examine the other and weigh “potential benefits and risks” of a merger, knowing each

institution faces growing shortages of funds and the needs of an aging population.

They must finish a draft “preferred integration plan” by late October, then submit to their boards of directors for votes early November and to the LHIN board on Nov. 18.

Only after Ontario’s health ministry approves a merger, and following a “legal due diligence process” lasting up to a year, would a merged hospital choose a single board and CEO. That’s when things on the four campuses would really start to change.

“Clinical integration opportunities will likely take place after that time,” Biron told staff in a meeting on Aug. 28.

TSH and RVHS have pledged none of their hospital campuses or emergency rooms will close after a merger, and no medical services would be moved between Scarborough and Durham Region.

“There may well be job loss through this process, since

The scope of the work is extensive, but Toronto chef Joshna Maharaj, consultant on a TSH initiative which introduced changes last year (supported by an Ontario G re e n b e l t Fo u n d a t i o n grant) that is giving admitted patients at the General fresh meals using local produce, has said she’s worried those improvements “may all come tumbling down, as (the hospitals) consider a merger.”

Conceding moving an animal is always stressful and involves risk, she said she’s confident of plans for the 50-hour trip, during which special tarps in the crates can cool or heat the elephants as appropriate.

Former television host Bob Barker, paying to send the elephants to PAWS, is “cautiously optimistic,” Woodyer said.

“He has said ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.’ I’ve been reassuring him for two years that this will happen.”

The zoo board voted to close down the elephant exhibit in May 2011. That fall, council voted to send the animals to PAWS. Tracogna and other board members blamed the loss of its accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums last year on this decision.

They remained unsatisfied with how PAWS handled the exposure of elephants at the sanctuary to tuberculosis and wanted to send the Toronto trio to the AZA-accredited National Elephant Centre in Florida, which was still under construction last year but received its first elephants in May. Etobicoke Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby, who also sits on the zoo board and opposed the transfer to PAWS, said the long conflict has soured many relationships.

“It has been a festering wound - that’s how I feel it’s been,” Lindsay Luby said yesterday, calling ZooCheck as “a very effective lobby” and criticizing fellow councillors she said refused to listen to the zoo’s knowledgeable staff on matters the politicians know nothing about.

“I hope they all sleep better, because I’m not.”

Lindsay Luby also compared the elephants to seniors who “very sensitive at their age about getting moved out of their house,” but said she would have rather seen them go to the NEC. Woodyer, however, said the sanctuary’s moderate climate and extensive spaces to roam in will make the Toronto elephants happier than the zoo did.

“It’s certainly a place that better meets the needs of these animals.”

To give them a final look at the elephants, the zoo is letting children 12 and under in free on weekends and school holidays, provided they are accompanied by an adult.

Zoo staff continue to get the elephants used to the crates.

“During these training sessions, certain areas around the elephant exhibit will be

closed to visitors to minimize distractions,” the zoo said in a release.

It added the best elephantviewing times will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. and that a “special area will be set up near the elephant exhibit where visitors can make a donation to elephant conservation.”

Raise Your Voice with Avril Lavigne to raise awareness on women’s health issues JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com An innovative new campaign is encouraging people in and around Toronto to give their vocal chords a workout in support of Women’s College Hospital.

The Women’s College Hospital Foundation has teamed up with pop rocker Avril Lavigne for the Raise Your Voice initiative.

The campaign will allow Torontonians to step inside a portable soundproof booth and sing along to the chorus of Lavigne’s ballad ‘Keep Holding On’.

Raise Your Voice is designed primarily as an awareness-raising campaign, though there will also be a fundraising component in the coming months.

“We were looking for ways to engage a younger demographic and raise awareness of women’s health especially for younger women,” said Women’s College Hospital Foundation spokesperson Arlene Madell.

“The reason we approached Avril is she’s young, she’s globally well-known just like our leading research facility is, and she’s Canadian.”

The soundproof booth is affixed on a truck with Lavigne’s picture and Women’s College Hospital signage on it. It has already made a few stops, including one at the Molson Amphitheatre when Lavigne played there on Labour Day weekend and a more recent stop at the Eaton Centre.

Participants can also upload recordings from home at www.singwithavril.com “We’ve got over 1,500 (participants) so far and we really want to make this one of the biggest choruses ever recorded,” Madell said.

It is slated to make a few more stops throughout the GTA, including visits to Woodbine Beach, Yorkdale Shopping Centre and the Toronto Zoo. The recorded voices will be added to a remix of ‘Keep Holding On’ with the remixed track due to be released on iTunes this fall.

Oasis Zoo Run on Saturday The Oasis Zoo Run, set for this Saturday, has two important championships on the line.

The annual run is serving as Canada’s national 10-kilometre championship and also as the finale for the annual Timex National Road Race Series.

On the other hand, while it will attract dozens of elite runners – including all of Canada’s marathoners from both the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 world championships – it’s also very much a part of the local grass roots running circuit.The 10K race features different start times for a complete range of competitive levels and there is also a 5K and even a ‘Cub Run’ for the kids. All runs are sold out, having easily met their cap of participants.

“The booth is soundproof and all the voices are mixed together, so we’re hoping even people who think ‘oh, I can’t sing’ won’t feel shy,” Madell said. “Hopefully,

the song’s a hit and people will be able to hear it and say ‘I was part of that.’”

“We want to show this is not your grandmother’s hospital, or your mother’s

hospital,” Madell said.

Hospital’s Scarborough Strides promotes health, wellness Scarborough Strides, a health and wellness campaign, starts next Tuesday, Sept. 24, with a full day of demonstrations and talks at Scarborough Town Centre.

Between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the Progress Avenue mall’s Centre Court, visitors can see bellydancing, tai chi, yoga and martial arts as well get free expert advice on subjects such as meditation and

preparing healthy meals on a budget.

Organized by The S c a r b o r o u g h Ho s p i t a l Foundation, the 12-day campaign includes events at Scarborough schools and will finish with a free concert and community fun day on Friday, Oct. 4 in Albert Campbell Square. Donations for The Scarborough Hospital’s Cancer Care program can

Small paddle-powered craft will take to the lower Rouge River in Scarborough this Sunday to protest a controversial proposal involving an

oil pipeline that crosses the river or its tributaries in six places.

Enbridge, owner of Line 9, is applying this fall to reverse the western direction of the pipeline and permit it to carry diluted bitumen, known as “tar sands oil,” to the east from Alberta. Paddle to Protect the Rouge is organized by local conservationists in Friends of the Rouge Watershed and by

the national advocacy group Environmental Defence, both of which oppose the plan.

At least a dozen canoes or other small boats will paddle at 1 p.m. from the Glen Rouge Campground off Kingston Road to Rouge Beach and back to celebrate the river’s beauty and “highlight what is at risk” if the pipeline breaks, said Leigh Paulseth, FRW’s environmental projects coor-

dinator. Paddlers can register at environmentaldefence.ca/ paddle-protect-rouge and encouraged to note whether they have room for passengers, she said.

The Friends group has told the National Energy Board it would rather the pipeline – part of which was exposed by erosion at the river last year – be relocated along the right of way for Steeles Avenue.

Guildwood event part of Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup The rocky, reclaimed shore of Scarborough’s Guild Park is the object of litter cleanup this weekend.

Volunteers wearing sturdy shoes or boots and gloves are asked to meet by the park’s flag pole at 201 Guildwood Pkwy. before 9:30 a.m. this Saturday.

The morning’s work and picture-taking are part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, which marks its 20th anniversary this year.

“It’s a chance to have fun, appreciate the unique natural setting of the park and make it a better wildlife habitat,” John Mason, president of the organizing group Friends of Guild Park and Gardens said in a release.

Steep trails Trails leading to the Lake Ontario shoreline by the park are steep and the volunteers should be able to lift

and carry bags of litter, the group said.

Other local cleanups planned this year are seeking participants, including one along Highland Creek north of Ellesmere Road from Bellamy Road to Production Drive on Sept. 25.

Volunteers for this event will meet at 4 p.m. that day at Morningside Crossing, the West Hill mall on Morningside Avenue organizing the cleanup.

A cleaning of Rouge Beach and the Rouge Park marshes will be led Sept. 27 by Toronto Zoo staff and local residents, who ask participants to meet at 10 a.m. on the beach beyond the parking lot at 195 Rouge Hills Dr. Shoreline litter is a serious environmental issue in Canada – and worldwide.

Its effects are far-reaching – from entangling and choking wildlife, to being ingested by wild animals, to negatively

impacting water quality and cleanliness.

Litter risks For example, during last year’s cleanup effort, 45 animals were found entangled, including 22 fish, 10 birds (including gulls, swans and heron) and even a fox.

Shoreline litter can also pose safety risks to humans, and cause disruptions or imbalances within the local

ecosystem.

The cleanup is a conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and the World Wildlife Fund.

Create a lighting scheme that works in your new kitchen When designing a kitchen, homeowners typically give substantial consideration to many elements of their dream design, including cabinet and countertop materials and which brand of appliances they most prefer. But few may consider the lighting for the room as thoroughly.

Lighting is an important consideration in any room, but most especially in the kitchen, where people tend to gravitate and spend a good portion of their time. The right lighting can have a dramatic effect on the functionality of the kitchen, including how the space feels when you enter it.

The right blend of lights can create a vibrant mood in the kitchen, while light can be adjusted according to what needs to get done in the space.

Establishing a lighting plan in a kitchen requires a combination of different lights. The main focus should be on three distinct lighting types: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting.

Task Lighting Task light is beneficial anywhere a person will need to perform tasks that require close concentration, such as chopping vegetables. Task lighting shines direct light onto a surface, illuminating it thoroughly, and it can be turned off when it is not needed.

Task lighting is generally placed above counters and islands where one will be slicing vegetables and preparing food. There may be lighting over the sink to illuminate dirty dishes. Metrolinx is already collaborating with the TTC, the city’s planning department and York Region on similar relief line studies.

The TTC has already released three possible alignments and costing scenarios for a relief subway line.

As part of the strategy, a preliminary public consultation is planned for this

fall, with its findings to be presented to the board in the spring, followed by a more detailed consult in the summer of 2014.

Even though a relief subway line, also known as a downtown relief line, would be part of the existing TTC network, Woo said it was important to determine how it could be employed to address congestion for GO, which operates a

regional service out of Union Station.

“We also need to understand what (a relief line) could do for Union Station and GO Transit’s service capacity, and what the time line would be for introducing these improvements,” she said.

Mayor Ford’s love of campaigning for office evident M

ayor Rob Ford has made a name for himself as a great lover of football, sometimes to the point of distraction.

But there is another game that excites nearly as much passion from our mayor and distracts him from his day-to-day duties almost as thoroughly. That would be campaigning.

On Monday, Ford found the hustings so distracting he could barely pay attention to questions in a press scrum, held outside his office and just a few feet away from the spot where his staff had set up a television screen continuously looping a video of highlights of the summer of 2013.

The mayor finally stopped, transfixed at the slow-motion video of himself, getting ready to arm-wrestle wrestlerturned-politician Hulk Hogan at the start of a local comic convention.

now, with his video and another Ford Fest in the offing later this week, the mayor was clear: “I’ve never stopped campaigning...

If you do, you lose at the polls.”

In the strictly practical sense of the word, the mayor was correct: an elected official is being judged from the moment he or she takes office.

However, there are strict rules about spending and receiving donations for electoral campaigns outside the campaign period.

And the video, produced by a local production/editing company and scored by one of the mayor’s vocally talented staff-members, sure looks like a bit of both.

But Ford doesn’t care about these things, and by the evidence, the powers-that-be don’t either.

Toronto’s Compliance Audit

Committee let the mayor off the hook over a boatload of questions arising from the way he and his brother conducted the 2010 mayoralty campaign when they were brought forward early in the term. The mayor survived that, just as he survived a conflict of interest ruling that threatened to remove him from office.

And as things stand right now, campaigning hard and pushing the rules might be worth the risk. Because as much as the video playing in the office window struggles to maintain a happy narrative, the other narrative – the one surrounding the actual business of governing – is less cheerful.

The mayor could well see his subway plans dashed, once again, as the realities of financing the Scarborough RT replacement with a subway dash against the October council meeting.

The questions surrounding videos and allegations of drug use continue to swirl,

and those other videos – of an over-refreshed-seeming Ford at the Taste of the Danforth – give a very different sense of the Summer of Ford.

Indeed, the scrum happened just as he left the city’s parks and environment committee – a committee he belongs to ex-officio, but never routinely attends. This time, as

a week ago, the mayor came with the express purpose of blocking an attempt to circumvent his budget process, by adding projects and programs back into the budget before he had even had the chance to set a framework.

Ford had to block the matter there, because really, he would have no hope of stopping a budgetary coup at council, a body

over which he long ago lost control.

Much better to concentrate on arm-wrestling photo ops, picnics in parks and fishing trips. They might not get him re-elected, but they certainly seem to be keeping our mayor entertained.

The results for Grade 6 English Language Learners increased four per cent in reading from 39 to 43 per cent, four per cent in writing from 47 to 51 per cent, and decreased three per cent in math from 47 to 44 per cent.

Build better transit and the young professionals will come.

That was one of the messages from Ontario’s transportation minister to an audience of transportation professionals yesterday morning.

Delivering the keynote speech for the Transit Infrastructure Funding and Financing Summit, Glen Murray said better transit was critical for the Toronto region to attract young talent from across the globe.

“Transit is becoming more important in the innovation economy, because mobility is critical to it,” said the minister during his speech at the Old Mill Inn at the start of the summit’s second day.

“It’s an incredibly competitive world and you have to create attractive neighbourhoods which

provide high-quality mobility for this younger generation of entrepreneurs, most of whom don’t have a car.”

Murray also defended his government’s decision to proceed with a two-stop eastern extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line, saying terminating the extension at Scarborough Town Centre, and not McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East, would revitalize Scarborough’s employment potential.

“The Scarborough Town Centre is the logical terminus because it is an underdeveloped downtown core,” he said.

“Low-valued industrial land that is under-utilized is the ideal corridor to put rapid transit in if you want to reinvent the neighbourhood.”

Murray, who in the past couple of months has made repeated public

critiques against both the federal government and Mayor Rob Ford, also called for an end to the political in-fighting over transit funding.

Under Premier Kathleen Wynne, the province is expected to soon introduce plans to generate transit revenue to fund the regional Big Move network being built by Metrolinx.

Murray said the Toronto region must find the money for the $50 billion transportation plan just to keep up with expansion plans of comparable cities like New York and London, UK, which is investing around 16 billion pounds into a new commuter rail service to open in 2018.

Ford on ways to fund the Sheppard subway in 2011. “We are asking them to act very quickly and report back to us in December,” said Wynne yesterday. “Metrolinx came forward with their investment strategy and we’re asking this group to look at those recommendations to determine which recommendations are appropriate and at the same time interact with the public and see what the best ways are to fund transit.”

M

usic carries a universal message in that it’s fun and it’s for everyone.

And Trio Estonia has created a trans-Atlantic alliance by bringing Estonian music to the continents on either side of the ocean.

The pianist for the trio, Norman Reintamm, who is also conductor of the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra in Scarborough, works with violinist Arvo Leibur, and cellist Aare Tammesalu to bring Estonian music to life in Toronto and the Estonian capital Tallinn as part of the trio’s mission.

Two years ago, the musicians concluded there seemed to be a lack of musical communication between the Toronto Estonian community and the Estonian community in Tallinn, said Reintamm.

“We decided to form a transAtlantic alliance so to speak that we would rehearse both here in Canada and in Europe.”

Reintamm said there are composers here in Canada that Estonians in Europe don’t know. And there are Estonian composers who Canadians

don’t know.

“We thought that we might bring these two to both continents.”

And sharing the wonders of music is at the core of the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra and the trio, which consists of Estonian and Estonian-Canadian musicians.

“Bringing chamber and classical music outside its comfort zone” and using this method as a way to share Estonian culture with Estonians and non-Estonians alike is the goal.

School programs “This is why we’ve been heavily involved in doing school programs and taking the program to the University of Toronto where we are going to be doing a concert demo so that younger people find out about Estonians; who they are where we’re from.”

Trio Estonia will be holding a free concert at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus at 1 p.m. on Sept. 25.

“We want to give a little bit of our heritage to Canadians, to society around us, and to be comfortable in a setting where you can come into,” said Reintamm.

with the kids and talk to the kids,” he said.

“For us as musicians, it was an enlightening thing seeing these kids eyes light up with the joy of a professional, seasoned musician playing and teaching right beside a young student.”

Reintamm wants to bring music back to the people.

In the 1800s, he said, chamber music was not meant to be played in a sterile concert hall environment where everyone sits in a robotic position. Chamber music was played while people had a bite to eat and and talked with their friends.

Reintamm draws the comparison to present day pub culture and ordering beer and wings.

“Let’s take chamber music to the pub and have beer wings and chamber music. It brings musicians into the real world instead of being in a sterile concert hall world _ there’s no connection between the musician and the audience.”

Trio Estonia is trying to get away from the idea of a concert hall.

“We want to bring classical and chamber music into the real world and if people want to applaud at the end of a dance movement then go right ahead!”

The program ranges from the Beethoven and Giovanni Battista Cirri to contemporary Estonian composers Arvo Pärt, Erkki Sven Tüür and Astor Piazzolla .

Trio Estonia will be holding a free concert at Univerity of Toronto Scarborough Campus at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

hether you have done it already, are still doing it or have all but given up, there isn’t one of us who hasn’t been there – on that quest to find love.

Looking, by Norm Foster, is a realistic and hilariously funny look at the mating rituals we go through to find someone and an amazing start to the Scarborough Players new season.

A standing ovation was given for a performance that can literally be described as a laugh a minute, and the four actors who make this story come to life deserved the recognition.

Set in modern day, the story is told through two sets of single friends, Andy and Matt (Daryl Marks, Steve Switzman) and Nina and Val (Meg Gibson, Erin Jones) who unbeknownst to them, will soon meet and change each other’s lives.

The first scene sees the guys at their weekly tennis game, but instead of playing a conversation about women ensues. At the end of it, Andy decides the answer to his loveless life is an ad in the personals and Matt agrees to accompany him on the blind date.

We then meet the ladies who have met for a workout at the gym but inevitably, a conversation about their love lives begins. By the end of it, Val decides Andy’s personal ad will possibly change her single status and Meg agrees to accompany her on the date.

Their first meeting at a bar is nothing short of hilarious.

Because of Andy’s shoddy cell phone, Val shows up wearing a red nose, not a red rose, on her lapel so Andy would recognize her. With that begin-

ning, you can imagine what the rest of the night may entail.

Surprisingly, Meg and Matt end up hitting it off leaving Val and Andy no further along in their pursuit of love.

But the story just begins here, and what ensues is a rollercoaster ride of hilarity and emotions as the four try to navigate

And as hysterical as this show is, at some point during the second act it got real.

There were genuine moments where the characters show their vulnerabilities, the pain of the search, and how dating is fraught with rejection.

But the dance is amazing to watch. This cast nailed it by acting out a true depiction of how it can be.

Newcomer Marks as Matt is a fantastic addition to the Scarborough Players stage.

His delivery is hilarious and his comic timing is right on.

Same goes for Jones. Her portrayal of the proper Val is amazingly funny, as is Gibson as Meg. Their deliveries are impeccable and I’m not sure how they kept a straight face in some scenes, especially Jones whose character found herself in some painfully awkward situations.

Switzman is fantastic as Andy. While he also has some funny dialogue, the strength in his performance comes from portraying his character’s honest and sincere side.

This show is a comedy with something for everyone because we’ve all been in their shoes. But it also reminds us that while the “looking for” is difficult, the “finding” can be amazing.

He may be a strong, silent type, but Scarborough hoops phenom Tyrell GumbsFrater is making a lot of noise of late.

The quiet Pope John Paul II Catholic School Grade 11 student, considered to be among the next wave of top basketball prospects to emerge from Canada, prefers to do his talking on the hard court – and he’s certainly done a lot of that recently.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound shooting guard, playing two years above his age class, was a solid contributor to his Team Ontario squad’s gold medal performance at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QC. A resident of the McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue area, Gumbs-Frater put up 67 points in five games – starting in each of those games – and tallied loads of floor time en route to Team Ontario’s gold medal win.

Up until this summer, which also included winning two big U.S. tournaments with Team Ontario in Indiana and Las Vegas, GumbsFrater, 16, was best known for sinking a spectacular buzzer beater – and championship game winner – in last year’s Toronto Catholic high school basketball final against Percy Monsignor Johnson.

“Overall this summer has been my best experience so far (basketball-wise), winning the nationals for a second year in a row was big for me,” he said as this school year starts.

“With the changes that we had this year with Team Ontario I feel like I proved a lot to myself and to the team.”

As for being considered one of the best hoops talents in the country, Gumbs-Frater, who also plays with the Markham Gators team, is OK with that.

“I feel comfortable with that,” he said. “I know as long as I work hard and put my mind to it I can do whatever I need to do.”

His coach, Russell Yarde, who watched Gumbs-Frater refine his natural talent for six years with the Gators program, said the

youngster has flown under the radar for a few years, likely at least in part because of his reserved personality, but calls the Scarborough talent the real deal.

“As far as talent he is definitely the most talented player I have ever seen. Ever. And the thing with Tyrell is he’s going to get better...a lot better,” Yarde said. “This year was probably his best year yet in terms of showing scouts and people what he can do.”

Gumbs-Frater admits becoming more vocal with his teammates is a part of his game he is working on. “That’s just my style; I am kind of quiet. A lot of people have told me that I need to be more vocal, so that’s one of the things I’m working on.”

His next challenge will be making the national team program.

“That’s my goal for next year, to make the national cadet team,” he said.

Olympic 1996 beach volleyball bronze medalist John Child is the new head men’s volleyball coach at Centennial College.

A former Olympic medallist and 10-time Canadian champ, Scarborough’s John Child can keep a crowd fascinated with some great stories about his rise to success in the sport of volleyball.

And he’ll have ample opportunity in his new gig – re-building a Centennial College women’s and men’s volleyball program that has been in hiatus for the past few decades.

As for the volleyball stories, one of them happens to be the time, while trying out for the school team in Grade 9, that he just didn’t seem to have what then coach Ed Martin figured was needed to make the Midland Avenue Collegiate squad.

Gung-ho about sport and about 6-foot-2 in size as a teen, the Scarborough-born Child remembered being a bit disenchanted at the time.

His father, also named John, kept telling him to focus

on soccer as the youngster often kicked the ball around their house yard on Citadel Drive. But, Child preferred hitting the ball rather than kicking one.

Coincidentally, taking in the practice at Midland that same day was Scarborough Titans coach Neil Cowey. He certainly thought the tall, lanky youngster had potential in the sport – and gave him a chance at the club level.

Child, now 46, did return to Midland to prove a few things – making the squad in grades 10, 11 and 12. He was also chosen team MVP and twice picked as school Athlete of the Year.

But Child’s success in the sport may well have started with the Titans, then some 10 years with the Scarborough Solars club before switching to the beach volleyball version. That’s where he tagged up with Mark Heese and both went on to make a few bucks on the World Beach Volleyball circuit.

ries, including three trips to the Olympic Games, he and Heese won the bronze medal in Atlanta in 1996 – and finished fifth in both Sydney in 200 and in Athens in 2004.

“Those were great times,” he said. “In the early ’90s I switched to the beach game.

It wasn’t an Olympic sport, but just happened to be in the right place at the right time. In 1993, it became an Olympic sport and I was competing for Canada three years later.”

Having met his wife Bridget 22 years ago during a mixed volleyball recreational tournament, and their children Jenna and Adam avid players of the same sport, Child has put aside his competitive shoes – but not his interest.

Now Child has another challenge: rejuvenating men’s and women’s volleyball programs that were shelved at Centennial College about 20 years ago.

“I feel great about the opportunity and what lies ahead,” said Child. “This is fantastic and I’m flattered to

be asked to get things going again.”

Approached by Centennial Athletic Director Steve McLaughlin shortly after Child was inducted to the College Sports Hall of Fame, he didn’t back away from the invitation to re-build the program. “He asked if I was interested in the job,” said Child. “And when the sport has taken over your life, I figured this was a wonderful opportunity to give students a chance to play, have some fun and keep active.”

As Centennial’s program co-ordinator, Child – a business management grad from Centennial many years ago – made it clear he won’t be coaching. His job will be to find individuals with exceptional talent to build under his tutelage.

Centennial is planning to re-join the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association in time for the 2014/15 season.
