THE NEED TO SEPARATE

Being a democratic country, that supports and uplifts the freedom of choice of its inhabitants, the existence of a “church and state separation” on the P h i l i p p i n e Constitution might be a reliever to the dispute that’s sprung from identifying the extent and grounds to which the church’s and state’s affairs could be interrelated and differentiated. To make it happen, the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines declares: The separation of Church and State shall be inviolable. (Article II, Section 6), and, No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed. No religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights.(Article III, Section 5). Thus the law dictates, let’s make some reality check.

Peeking thru the “NEW ERA” FACT: Protests banged the halls of the DOJ on the morning of August 27, as they call for the non-intervention of the now Former Justice Secretary Leila De Lima on the issue of alleged kidnapping or illegal detention of INC (Iglesia ni Cristo) ministers, and to let the issue be resolved within their own discretion. On July, Sorsogon INC minister Lowell Menorca was arrested and detained on charges of threatening some individuals with a grenade. His brother filed a complaint with the NBI, stating that Menorca and his family were actually being held under armed guard by the INC. Same incident happened, by August, as Isaias Samson, a member of the INC Sanggunian, also bears positions as head of the INC foreign mission and editor of the official INC publication, as well filed a complaint, yet in this case with the Department of Justice (DOJ). Same charges were raised by Samson, stating that he and his family were also put under armed guard and were restricted to their house for several days, while he was being interrogated of his involvement with a certain blog writer who has been writing openly about the anomalies that has been taking place within INC. Though, the INC has been pressing their act as an actualization of the “church and state” separation, the consequential actions required upon the complaints that has been already filed, which on their case were alleged kidnappings, a non bailable

case, and illegal detentions, cannot be just right away disregarded and be treated with a mere shrug upon request or protest. The Church and State separation respects the freedom and beliefs of each religion, yet each individual, regardless of his religion, is subjected to the hands of the ruling law of the state, and each complaints and offenses must be weighed down accordingly and without bias.

The Loophole Article 3 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution forbids the government to pass any law which directly affects the free exercise of any religion. And as stated at Article 6, section 29 (2), "No public money or property shall be appropriated, applied, paid, or employed, directly or indirectly, for the use, benefit, or support of any sect, church, denomination, sectarian institution, or system of religion.." Therefore, Churches and religious institutions are tax-exempt. And since they can have their own source of fund from their members, it is clear that government has no obligation to extend its help, in any form, to any religion. Needless to say, not even a single centavo from public money can be spent in support of any religion. There where lies the loophole.

The more the church and the state try to pull each other’s end of rope, the more the knot will get tighter.

Then why, so, is the Philippine Government financially supporting the religion of Islam via the NCMF, the ARMM and now the Bangsamoro? As defined by Wikipedia: "The Moro people or Bangsamoro are a population of indigenous Muslims in the Philippines, forming the largest non-Catholic group in the country, and comprising about 5% of the total Philippine population." The definition contradicts itself by defining ‘bangsamoro’ as non-Catholic group. Muslims are the people who are members of the Islam religion. They share the same faith, believing in Allah, in Mohammad as their prophet and instilling and applying in their lives the teachings of their Qur’an (Koran). They are comprised of different culture, races and ethnicities all over the world. They are just mistakenly given the wrong definition as ‘group of indigenous people’ instead of ‘people who practice the religion of Islam’. Being Muslim is not synonymous with being indigenous. Being

THE SEARCHER

a Muslim makes a person a follower of Islam and does not automatically make him indigenous. The government, by implementing the Bangsamoro Basic Law, already supports financially the Islam religion which blindly violates the Constitution. The Bangsamoro Basic Law has replaced the ARMM. It is now like a bigger and deeper pouch of perks and advantages, covering wider range of Muslim community. To achieve that, it requires much more governmental budget and that make it much harder to really separate the church and the state. It’s funny how the government implements new law that only crosses the line of an older law. Or worse, the constitution itself.

Untangling of Knots Frankly speaking, is it really possible to detach church influence from political matters, and vice versa? Even the people we voted for political positions, to which we entrusted the ruling of the state, each follow and value a certain principle in their life, which is influenced by their personal religious orientation and moral awareness. This is exemplified during the heat of the issue of the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Bill. Aside from the persistent condemnation of the Catholic Church, headed by Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle,as its mandate will lead to a breakdown of moral sense, some senators also openly expressed their disapproval to the said bill,

like Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, Senate President Pro-Tempore Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, and Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III. The separation of the church and state has been fired during this debate, yet, Fr. Joaquin Bernas, S.J, one of the drafters of the Philippine Constitution and a prominent lawyer and writer, pointed and explained that the concept of separation of church and state is directed towards the state, rather than the church, as it is a political concept. The state should not support any specific religion; its funding and activities in favor of any sect. But it does not restrict anybody, regardless of his profession, religion and life stature, from expressing their views on the morality and acceptability of proposed social projects and bills. It is really good to live in a democratic country like ours. Like you have so much privilege in your hands. We are granted to freely and rightfully exercise our own will. We are presented with many choices, and we may be divided by our differences. But one thing’s for sure, we are still bounded by a single rope. The more the church and the state try to pull each other’s end of the rope, the more the knot will get tighter; the more the dispute; and the more the people of this nation will get torn. Afterall, the clash of religion and state cannot be fully eradicated to existence, for these are two entities embodying and standing firm for their certain principle and moral call. Though contradicting often, it cannot be denied that these two only wants what is beneficial and best for its people-us, the Filipino people. Let us hope that this separation should be a clear matter over each and everyone of us, and be used to support and answer the conflicts within our country, not a wall that will literally set the gap to tear us.

DOH alerts citizens; Food Poisoning Incidents Outbreak From April to August of this year, increasing number of food poisoning incidents were reported mainly in the provinces of Davao, NCR, Laguna and Batangas. Two people died and one was hospitalized because of drinking milk tea at Ergo Shop in Sampaloc, Manila on April 9. According to the Manila Police Department’s investigations with the help of a CCTV footage and some witnesses, Suzanne Dagohoy and Arnold Aydalla bought a milk tea by 11 am. Minutes later, Aydalla pointed out an unpleasant taste and made Dagohoy try the milk tea before bringing it to the shop owner. Abrigo, the shop owner and manager, immediately replaced the straw and tasted the tea himself to know about the complaint of the two. It was said that the three began frothing seconds after, so they were rushed to the Sampaloc Hospital, where Dagohoy and Abrigo died and Aydalla being treated. The PNP Crime Laboratory conducted the forensic examinations of the two and told that their death was caused by ingestion of a toxic substance. This was also confirmed

by tests on the milk tea which stated that it contained oxalic acid – a colorless liquid which is hard to distinguish when mixed with water and is used as a bleaching agent. Due to this incident, Lloyd Abrigo - son of the owner and the Asst. Manager of the shop, was filed charges of murder or frustrated murder because according to a witness, he brought a foul-smelling liquid earlier before the incident happened. He of course repudiated the allegation and believed that this was a sabotage but the MDP declared the case closed after a few investigations and have been proven a murder case. Another incident on July 10 wherein 1,925 people – mostly students – showed symptoms of food poisoning after eating Durianflavored candies manufactured by Wendy’s and Lola Abon’s Durian Candy Shops. These shops were also reported of not being approved to produce any kinds of candies by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The victims were residents of Surigao del Norte, 6 towns in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur.

A week after, the Department of Health (DOH) presented a report that revealed the true cause of the incident. It was said that those candies contained Staphylococcus Areus, a bacteria which is commonly found on human skin. This proved that the workers of the said shops failed to do well on packing the candies that had led to these kind of incident. After this incident another food poisoning was reported in Calamba city, Laguna which affected 172 students. It was reported that those students were given ice candies and cupcakes by the employees of AMS electronics and representatives of Haribon Foundation who sponsored the Nutrition Day program in Real Elementary school. The Calamba City Police filed charges of reckless imprudence resulting to physical injuries against 13 employees hours after the students gave signs of food poisoning. However, the employees were released afterwards, due to lack of evidences stated in the toxicology report. Another incident happened and only 10 students in Juan Sumulong Highschool in Cubao, Quezon City were conveyed to

3 hospital and some of them were brought to the Intensive Care Unit because of the Macapuno candy they bought from an unidentified vendor. The vendor was said to be dressed like one of the students just to breach into the school and sell his candies. Fredie Avendaño, DepEd Assistant Superintendent in Quezon City, said that he is not doubting the security maintenance of the school guards but it is clear that the said incident started because of their carelessness. Few weeks later, August 9, 21 students of Batangas State University were rushed to different hospitals because of a food poisoning incident during their acquaintance party. According to a student, they started vomiting after eating a pizza ordered from the restaurant. The school administration still did not give any statements about the incident but assumed to hold a meeting with the restaurant’s management. Several students were now discharged but some are still recovering from the incident. Due to those incidents, DOH called out the attention of the public to help them try to prevent future occurrences of this kind of food poisoning incidents. Ervin Joshua M. Navarro

NEWS 4 FOUR CHILDREN MISSING, BELIEVED ABDUCTED IN BATANGAS

The Searcher Issue No. 1 Volume No. 16

In response to reports of four missing children who are reported to have been kidnapped in separate incidents in Batangas, the Philippine National Police has formed a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to act on this case in the province that happened just within a week. The Batangas Provincial Police Office created the SITG “Batang Anghel” to conduct a “comprehensive and critical investigation” on the consecutive cases of missing children in different towns of Batangas.Police Inspector Hazel ParianLuma-ang, Batangas police spokesperson, said that the task group has been investigating three suspected kidnapping cases, including the August 27 incident, wherein four children were abducted in Bauan, Batangas. The four victims are Robin Cabral, 14; Jerome Claveria, 12; Mica Recto, 11; and Romar Manalo, 12. Robin, a resident from Bauan, went missing on August 26 night. Shirley Cabral, an OFW and is also the mother of Robin went home after his son was reported missing. His aunt, Josephine Aquino, said heleft their house in San Pascual town after being scolded by his father, Romeo. He was reportedly last seen riding a jeepney along Kapitan Ponso Street in Barangay (village) Poblacion IV, Bauan Thursday evening. He was forced into a black van by armed suspects who pointed a gun at the driver of the jeepney he was riding around 11pm, according to her another aunt, Berna Calayo. The other victims, Jerome, Mica and Romar, were reported grabbed by armed men who also pointed a gun at the driver of the jeepney the children

were riding before they were kidnapped and forced into a van, as stated by a witness. Romar’s grandmother, Eugenia Cañada, said that the three children scavenge for plastic and carton every night. But Batangas police said that all the four children are jeepney barkers at the parking area near a convenience store. Three are residents of San Pascual, Batangas. One is a student at the San Pascual National High School while two are pupils at the San Pascual Elementary School. However, Region IV-A Police Chief Richard Albano said on an interview with GMA News that the four incidents are not officially considered kidnapped because the results of their initial investigation are still pending. He said that all the information pertaining to the alleged abduction so far are rumors, although they are already talking to witnesses who can alight on the incident. But the reports of missing children still bothers the public for more incidents of the same case also occurred. According to Batang Anghel’s first progress report, an eyewitness said that the three children went missing in the parking area of a convenience store in Bauan after an unidentified man on a black Kawasaki motorcycle went after them. provincial police director, said in his report to the PNP chief that the task group Batang Anghel is gathering closed-circuit television footage while Bauan police have been tasked to find the jeepney driver who last saw these children who was abducted on August 27. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group field office in Batangas has also been mobilized. Police Inspector Luma-ang said that 15 officers have been assigned to the Batang Anghel task group, led by Police Superintendent Dennis Esguerra. Batangas police said on September 7 that one of the four was allegedly kidnapped on August 27 was confirmed to have been forcibly taken. Senior Superintendent Fidel, gave the confirmation in an interview with GMA reporters. Moreover, the parents of the missing boy are understandably worried about their child even as parents of schoolmates of the missing boy said they have taken extra precautions to make sure their children are safe and secure. Another incident took place on September 3, involving a five-yearold girl who was walking with her mother on front of a bakery when an unidentified person with a bonnet riding a van grabbed the arm her daughter. She

supposedly fought off the kidnapper and refused to let go of her daughter, and the suspect eventually left them unharmed. She reported the matter to the police but the vehicle did not pass any check points. Fidel said they are now conducting back ground checks and a comprehensive investigation on the four missing children. “Additional policemen were deployed to ensure maximum police visibility and protection especially near schools. We appeal for sobriety and calm and for the public to report anything suspicious,” he said. ONLY HOAX REPORTS After the series of abductions, rumors of alleged kidnapping has been contagious in Batangas where children as young 10 years old were supposedly seen being captured into a van by a number of masked men. Three more cases were reported missing in Batangas City on September 3, but all children have returned safely to their homes. Fidel said the report of their abduction were proven to be a hoax. These include a 17-year-old female high school student who sent a text message to her friend about being continued on page 7

from page 1 Santiago announced in the press briefing that the church was expelling Tenny and Angel Manalo together with the younger siblings of Eduardo and Angel - Marco Eraño ‘Marc’ Villanueva and Lolita ‘Lottie’ Manalo Hemedez for allegedly ‘sowing disharmony’ among its members. Santiago also denied that ministers have been abducted and that there was a conflict within the Manalo family. However, Roel Rosal, former INC minister, believed that the Manalos were being held because of opposing Eduardo with regard to politics and corruption. He added that 10 ministers along with other Manalo family members are being held under house arrest at the INC Central Office in order to prevent the disclosure of financial corruption by INC Auditor General Glicerio B. ‘Jun’ Santos, Jr. and his staff. Rosal said that he and his wife were also expelled from the church for trying to uncover the said corruption. He also added that INC is peddling its “block voting” power. GMA Network News also reported that they saw an individual that looked like Angel inside the Manalo compound. Though he could freely move, guards with long firearms were also seen inside. People inside the Manalo house flashed messages that read: “Where are the missing ministers?” Due to the allegations, Department of Justice (DOJ) under Secretary Leila de Lima, was also given an authority to investigate reports after receiving an e-mail on July 23, past 9:00am, with a link to the YouTube Video from a certain “kapatid saiglesia” with the subject “Fwd: help po.”

Other allegations had also surfaced, including that the building of Philippine Arena is the product of corruption in INC, according to Angel during his interview with Radio dzMM on July 24. He also denied being held hostage inside the Manalo compound but, conceded that he’s worried for the fate of the missing ministers. The crisis had also reached the United States, which made one of the minister resigned in front of the members of the church. As the crisis continued, more members were expelled including those who joined the protest in California in support for the ministers.

Former ‘Pasugo’ editor vs. INC In a report on GMA News TV’s “State of the Nation with Jessica Soho”, July 23, former ‘Pasugo’ – the official publication of Iglesia ni Cristo, editor Isaias Samson Jr. revealed some ways of how corruption allegedly happens inside the church involving the program “Lingap sa Mamamayan.” “Tungkol sa pinamamahagi sa Lingap, halimbawa bigas, kahit na makukuha lang ang isang sakong bigas ng P1, 700 o P1, 750, eh magugulat ka ang ibinayad pala ay P1, 900 o P1, 950,” he said on an interview with the show. Isaias Samson Jr., a secondgeneration INC minister confirmed that he and his family were illegally detained by the Iglesia’s Sanggunian (the highest administrative council of the INC). They were under the supervision of armed guards by the INC administration, and that INC leadership accused him of being “Antonio Ebanghelista” – a pseudonym used by an unknown minister who has written online articles about Santos and the Church administration. According to Samson, he and his family got away by telling the guards that they will attend a church but drove off to other location. Two days after giving a statement concerning the allegations, Samson and his family were expelled from Iglesia ni Cristo for refusing to submit to the authority of the church. After several days, Samson filed a case against the members of the INC Sanggunian for alleged illegal detention and harassment of him and his family. Because of giving accusations

Broadening Knowledge on Journalism, The Searcher Heeds Sir Pit’s Lecture

The Searcher (TS), on its intent to gain ore knowledge and to cease rummaging the issues between them and Mr. Pit Maliksi, the speech and writing professor of Polytechnic University of the Philippines Sto. Tomas Branch (PUPSTB) conducted a two-part lecture meeting to develop potent journalists at Horton function room, PUP-STB, May 23 and July 17. The editorial board attended the said seminar concerning grammar, guides in writing effective articles, and tips and techniques on how to construct good write ups. Sir Pit showed the rule in write ups starting from making an outline up to the checking of spellings and punctuations. He also shared his knowledge on the three important elements in effective writing: ethos, logos, pathos, how these three influences the whole content of writings. Moreover, he also advised on how to enrich the skills of the young journalists by establishing

their credibility, using journals as their reference to some vocabularies and making arguments. He too, gave a tip that to be an intelligent writer, they must engage themselves on deep reading because reading the common reading is not learning its provocation, as he quoted from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Sir Pit also opened the concerns between him and TS and clarified the misunderstandings issued during the previous terms, but he said that it is alright now and he even offered assistance for revision of articles in the publication. He ended his lecture by reminding them to keep on writing and make it a habit because writing is not to impress but to express and he also quoted from Emerson as well “When you write, be informative.” Joan M. against Santos and the church, INC representative Glicerio B. Santos, IV head counsel filed libel complaint against Samson. However, INC spokesman, Edwil Zabala in a phone interview in the CNN Philippines, explained that the said illegal detention was a disciplinary measure within the church, “iyon po ay preventive suspension.” Missing ministers Mnister Lowell Menorca Jr. (also known as Ka Boyet), an INC volunteer minister in Sorsogon was arrested on July 17 for allegedly threatening the two passengers waiting for a ride along the highway in Cavite with a grenade. However, Lowell was released on July 25 and the police said that complainant has withdrawn the charges of grave threat and illegal possession of explosives against Menorca. According to Samson, the military picked up Menorca from Sorsogon to Dasmariñas. He said that the missing ministers were being held in Rosalia Compound and Caringal in Quezon City. Among the other 9 reported missing ministers are Arnel Tumanan, Joven Sepillo of Tacloban, and Nolan Olarte of Cebu. This was also claimed by the blog site “Iglesia Ni Cristo - Silent No More,” run by a certain Antonio Ramirez Ebangelista. Lowell along with his wife and child were interviewed by GMA reporters on August 1 outside the INC compound and he denied his abduction and begged for his brother to stop making assertions. He said that staying within the compound is voluntarily because of their safety. He was worried that someone might attack him in order to direct the blame on the INC. After the interview, GMA staffs escorted him and his family back to the compound. Meanwhile, Anthony Menorcabrother of Lowell, said that the INC Sanggunian forced his older brother to deny the abduction because it is holding Boyet’s wife, Seiko Otsuka Menorca, and a one year old child. Anthony stated that in a meeting with his brother, he told him “Binantaan kami ng kapatid ko na kami ay papatayin”. Anthony was placed under the Witness Protection Order due to the ‘very sensitive’ information that he turned over to the NBI according to the DOJ. On the other hand, other alleged abducted ministries Joel San Pedro, Jojo Nemis and Arnel Tumanan together with ) Boyet Menorca, on July 29, in an interview with Eagle News Service/

Net 25 denied that they were being held captive and stated they were not tortured. They also stated their loyalty to the church, administration and also to Eduardo Manalo. However, the said TV program and broadcaster is owned and operated by the INC. Five day protest (August 27-31) About 2,000 Iglesia members led by INC spokesman, Edwil Zabala held a vigil outside the Department of Justice office on August 27 and continued their demonstration at EDSA Shaw and EDSA Ortigas in front of the EDSA shrine. Members of INC were calling for Justice Secretary De Lima’s resignation for allegedly persecuting their church and called for upholding the separation of church and state. Bienvenido Santiago, Sr., the church’s general evangelist called De Lima to focus instead on the SAF 44 case, not the case filed by the expelled minister, Samson. Zabala said that De Lima’s action on the filed case was irregular. The report from GMA News said that police officers were standing guard in the area but weren’t moving to disperse the crowd despite the rally having no permit from the Quezon City government. The 4th night of vigil-protest, August 30, an estimated 5,000 followers stormed at the EDSA Shaw. According to a Rappler report, the INC wanted two things: De Lima’s head and the dropping of the serious illegal detention case filed by Isaias Samson. INC also threatened to bring even more members. At about dinner time, President Benigno Aquino III quietly convened some members of his cabinet at Bahay Pangarap, his official residence. Presidential Communications Undersecretary, Manuel L. Roxas III said that they were discussing developments about INC protest. The five days protest officially ends on August 31 after a ‘peaceful agreement’ with the government. Although the protest already ended and it is said that an agreement between the INC leaders and the government was settled, the government were cautious and not yet giving a clear and precise statement concerning the said ‘peaceful agreement’. -sources: GMA News, Philstar, Rappler, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Star Philippines and Manila Bulletin Laarni M. Nevertheless, Batangas Governor Vilma Santos also appealed to Batangueños, especially the parents, not to panic, saying the local government and the police are acting upon the situation. In a separate interview with reporters Santos said she has been receiving requests from worried parents to suspend classes in accordance to the series of reports on children abductions. “Hindi po ito gan’un kalaki, ang importante po ay magtulungan tayo,” she said. “Kung meron man [kidnappings] we are not taking it sitting down. She said the hotline is open 24 hours. Santos, however, appealed to the public not to use the hotline for practical jokes. Sr. Insp. Bauan City Mayor Ryan Dolor said that the reported kidnappings may be part of a black propaganda conspired by his political enemies to paint a negative image as a dangerous, crime nest and unsafe place the town has become under his administration. Dolor emphasized that there were yet no concrete evidences to conclude that the case of these missing children are part of a kidnapping spree. But still, the mayor warned his citizens to be more vigilant about the safety of their children, yet must also be cautious in spreading unfounded rumors to avoid creating further terror.

Hoy, hoy Buloy, naaalala mo pa nun’ tayo’y nagsasama? Double

LITERARY

Dumb Ways to Die Joana Mae A. De Jesus dead.

Nangangarap maging doktor. Marami pang iba diyan pero mas continued on page 12

June - October 2015 Adhering the Truth for the Welfare of the People

Linggo.

Unang Paglalakbay: Tres Lang Sapat Na! Haring Araw: E kung naattend on time yang prof niyo edi sana di kayo ang nahahassle ano? (looks at his sa-tabi-tabi-langbought watch) Ang daldal ko talaga, sige po. Paalam! (make himas himas of the rooster) Sumunod naman kayo sa patakaran.

Take note hindi nagoovertime. Sabay-sabay nating ulitin. Any questions, if none goodbye and have a nice day. Pupoy (sa isip lang):

IV. Cramming and multitasking at its finest.

Prof: Time is up. Pass your papers. VI. Ang Hatol (Last na to, pramis!) SUMMER. *insert drumroll/heavy build up background music here* 3.00 Tres.

Sampung Bagay Tungkol Kay Malvar

June - October 2015 Adhering the Truth for the Welfare of the People

Palagay mo, may reporma nga ba?

undoubted verity Joan M. Estrella

“And religion – whether you believe in God or Yahweh or Allah or something else, odds are that at heart you want the same things.” -Everyday (David Levithan) For over centuries, mankind’s history teaches us that religion plays a major role not only in a person’s life but as well as in our society. During the thousands of years, enormous religions have been found worldwide- from Hinduism to Islam, Taoism, Buddhism and to Christianism. And as this religious differences increase, different conflicts and debates also arise. People are confused and tend to asked “Which religion is right?” People are defending their faith and some are claiming that their religion or church alone is the way to salvation, thus, causing conflicts and bewilderment about the ‘True Church’.

I, however, believe that though there are enormous diversities, similarities still exist within different religions, and provocation of conflicts are not the religion itself. Conflicts emerge because of people’s lack of knowledge about religion, or being ‘religiously illiterate’. We don’t know much about our own and other’s religion, we just have an idea that this is our church, these are the things that we should do, these are the things that we shouldn’t do- and that’s it! This is good and the rest is not. This, maybe is because our knowledge only comes from the media and/or what our home and environment only inculcate into us. And just lately, we hear about the issues

inside the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) but not about their discipline and unity. The media only likely to focus on the negatives, mistakes and bad things that happen within each religions and only pay least attentions to the positivity, good intentions and good side and similarities these different religious groups have. They have the power to divert our interest from the good to the bad side of these religious denominations. Because of this, people tend to judge other’s belief and come into the misconception that this church is better than the other. Maybe their traditions, beliefs, customs, languages and practices are distinct from each other but still, the notions that they’re teaching are the same. They are all telling us to be a good person, to show kindness to others, to be at peace and to find solace, to communicate with the divine/sacred through prayer and to live in harmony with others. They all have similar tools and principles for living. One day, one of my co-crusader asked when he was confused on which congregation is he going to choose, my response was like, “As long as you are for God, it doesn’t matter which one you choose.” It’s almost the same when it comes to what our religion is, it doesn’t matter as long as you are for holiness and for God. It’s like eating a cake, ‘One may eat a cake with icing either straight or sideways. It all tastes sweet either way.’Ramakrishna. I am from a religious but also religiously illiterate family. Religion was never really a topic within my family and colleagues,

I won’t go into details to describe more what he looks like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse. August Pullman only wants to be an ordinary kid. A ten-year-old kid who does ordinary things like eating ice cream, playing on Xbox, riding a bike and other stuffs that will make him feel as ordinary as he can be. Like so ordinary that no one will notice him. But unfortunately, he is no ordinary kid. Well, he doesn’t have super powers or what for one thing. But his facial deformity makes him far from ordinary. His mere presence can make the real ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. He always receives an

OMG-WHAT-KIND-OF-MASKARE-YOU-WEARING-OH!-OOPSNO-IT ’S-NOT-A-MASK-IT ’S-AFACE look. He was born with a severe facial deformity and was considered as a medical wonder. He has been homeschooled by his parents to protect him from the possible cruelty of the outside world to him. But realizing that he can never be protected forever and he has to face the world one way or another,-well, ‘facing the world’ is a funny pun. Punny pun? HA! THAT’S TWO PUN IN A ROW!--his parents enrolled him at Breecher Prep as a fifth-grader. He is now going to a real school for the first time in his life. Imagine how hard that can be for him. He has to observe school rules and regulations, learn to interact with his teachers and make new friends which he doesn’t really do in his life. He is the epitome of ‘getting out of the comfort zone’. Heightening up to the stake is his condition that will surely be the cause of the majority of his struggles.

and we also don’t pay much attention into this. We grew up as a Catholic praying this, praying that; doing this, doing that; celebrating Christmas, feast days and other occasions but, we really don’t have much deeper ideas about our religion and the difference it has with others. Whenever I learn that someone’s and that some of my relative’s religion are opposite from us, I was like looking at them differently and series of question marks were popping into my mind. It’s not being discriminative but ‘prejudice’ maybe. That is, because back then, I have no knowledge about other religions because no one told us about these religions. I have never involved myself in any ‘religious thingy’ conversations before because of being religiously illiterate and the only knowledge I have are those that my home and what my environment taught me. This caused conflict not only with others but also within me. It felt like you’re both different for not sharing the same belief and you had to act differently when you’re around with people from different denomination. This, however, changed when I met this group 5 years ago which gives catechisms and formations that I’ve become cognizant and open about religion. As we engaged sociably, we come across with many people with different beliefs as we do. I’ve been in a group discussion which consist of Catholics, INCs, BornAgain Christians and other sects, we’re discussing not contradicting neither arguing with each other. It’s a kind of conversation where you don’t need to correct, oppose or clash with each other because you don’t share the same faith-because that’s what sometimes happen when opposing views talked with each other. You just listened and gain new ideas about the differences and similarities you have. I came to realize the similarities in values and beliefs, how to be open and to respect each other’s religious decisions and even see a different culture or traditions. The juxtaposition of these religions will show us that in spite of their differences, all of them guide us into only onto goal and mission – ‘to strive for goodness’. ‘Is there really a good and bad religion? And that’s where the real story starts. Although the story is told primarily from Auggie’s perspective, other people in his life also partake in sharing their point of view in the story. They offer an insight into Auggie’s extraordinary and amazing life making the story more moving and gripping. Defying the mainstream YA novels and series-obsessed world we are now in, WONDER is a good break. This is indeed a novel worthy of a space in your shelf or at least in your TBR (to be read) list. I found myself grinning, smiling, chuckling, moaning and tsking from time to time. An uplifting, very-ohso-real, inspiring and funny novel for readers of all ages regardless of the fact that it’s a middle-grader’s genre. It’s very humane and touching. It will help you see the beauty in people underneath their façade. It will make you love and appreciate life and the people in your life more. It will make you realize one’s importance. Every page is filled with pure emotions

Which one will lead us to heaven?’ Not one religion is right or wrong, good or bad, better or worse although some people have the mentality that one religion is the right one over any other religion is also what causes conflict and argument. Other religious people will convince us to be converted or to convert others from this to other faith, because they claim that their religion alone will bring us to heaven. Say, that I am a Catholic ever since and someone’s telling me to be one of them. I know in myself that I will stand firm and won’t turn my back on my faith, same as how firm that person is in his faith that he won’t also leave it if I am the one who’s trying to convert him. If, religion ‘A’ is the way to heaven, where will religion ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ and others bring us? What if a very kind person who lived his life striving for perfection and holiness at religion C died and at the same time, a person at religion who lived his life sinfully also died, who will go to heaven? Is it the person in religion B (which is not the way to heaven) or person in religion A (the way to salvation)? It is the deed, the act of a person that will justify his morality and his salvation. In the end, it is still good things. If we will just open our minds, we will learn lot of things from different religions. We need to broaden our knowledge, not just about our own religion but as well as about the others. So we may learn to respect and accept each other, to avoid conflicts and offending each other, and to live in harmony and at peace. It is Pope Francis who said that we should respect and accept each other regardless of our religion. You cannot measure one’s morality by his religion. You cannot justify his misdeed by merely stating that he is a vigilant advocate of a certain religion. It is better to live in a different or opposite religion which believe that there’s someone up there, that the mission of life is goodness and holiness, rather than living a life without believing in an omnipotent one that will lead him in the right pathway. that will open your heart for empathy, love, respect, compassion and understanding. Really unputdownabble that when you reach the last page, you just wish to give Auggie a tight hug. The novel will leave tears in your eyes, or worst it can really make you sob which really feels good after reading a story like this one. Underneath the deformity lie courage, kindness and amity in him. You will surely love Auggie as much as you love your fictional boyfriend/girlfriend character. ‘The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they’ve died. They’re like pyramids that Egyptians built to honor their pharaohs. Only instead of being made out of stone, they’re made out of the memories people have you. That’s why your deeds are like your monuments. But with memories instead of with stone.’ Read about Auggie Doggie and it’s guaranteed that you will never forget him.

FOR THE GROWN UPS!

“Do any men grow up or do they only come of age?” -Stephen King, The Gunslinger

As I was pondering for a suitable meaning of the word “Maturity” to include in this article, I stumbled with these: “Maturity is the ability to respond to the environment in a suitable manner. It involves awareness of the appropriate time and place to behave, and knowing when to act, according to the circumstances and the culture of the society one lives in.” It is difficult to accurately define what maturity exactly means, and to acclaim any right to identify who among everyone has it. Though it is often associated with ageing, should we be satisfied on believing that maturity should apply and be practiced only when you reach

a certain marginal age? Though easy to say, incorporating maturity in everyday actions is not as painless as blowing the candles on your birthday cake. ***** A friend of mine found out that he has been backstabbed by let’s say one of his org mate regarding his performance in the organization. He was outraged upon knowing the story and even frantically consulted the rest of the group. It is extremely hard to accept that after all the efforts you’ve put on making something work, there are still people who would choose to find a hole on everything and ignore the rest of your hard work. Yet, that was the reality of life. After he calmed down, he chose not to discuss anything against the person, and planned to just resolve the issue with only the person involved. It was easy to

Hope for the Hopes.

There will always be people who talk a lot of negative things about today’s generation. I hope you, all youth, are prepared for those insults when you hear them. “This time’s generation is reckless, immature, impulsive, subtle, and aggressive,” some of them will say. The elders are criticizing today’s youth; they did not know that they were the ones who raised us. Now that the matter is filed in this battle field, let us ventilate the dignity of our troops and prove to those talkative creatures that we are not the beings that they claim.

share. Culture is the shared symbolic systems, and processes of maintaining and transforming those systems. Though our nation’s culture at this point in time is mixed with rampant corruption, deception and lies, the Filipino youth still remain vigilant. I, together with my co-generation, stay persistent and firm in Gat. Jose Rizal’s belief that we, the youth, is still the hope of the nation. Together with the other Filipino, we play a pivotal role in genuine social change and emancipation. We contribute a lot of things with regard to education, economy, technology, and even politics.

From the moment we open our eyes upon, we are introduced as the hopes of our mother land. They set high expectations against us. We are pressured by their aspirations that everything we do will definitely benefit for the good our nation. We are once clay ready to mold by someone who can make as an incredible figure. But it was before, today is different. We are left hanging in the table of disasters and let ourselves protect our being. And yet they still rant about the impudence that they accused. They compare us to other and lament how far we have been left behind. Many personage of the older generation is asking, “Is Rizal’s vision for the youth very much far from reality?”

EDUCATION. Nowadays, different places outside our home become the youth’s learning centers. Their minds are cultivated that somehow they can contribute something for the nation. The youth are enhancing with different specialties to accommodate different problems and lend solutions for them. Amidst this perception, we all know that not all youth went to school; some were there, along the street, no school to attend at all, a nomad. Some past generations consider this as a waste of time, they iterate instead of helping society achieve a good mannered citizen, we are there obtaining our non-sense degree and become this generation’s MD’s – master delinquents. Do they know the reason why is this happening? Most of them are unfortunate while the others are bullied. The youth of today will be the future’s sensible and well-bred educators. Many teens of today’s generation are into taking Bachelor of Education and majoring different subjects. They still have the heart and passion to help the nation to be intelligent enough to respond to the demands of the world.

Some researchers say that youth’s values and morals are not distinct from those of their parents, which means that youth culture is not a separate culture. Just because we see the presence of what seems to be a youth culture today does not mean that this phenomenon extends to all generations of young people. Youth culture is the way adolescents live, and the norms, values, and practices they

fight back and let the flames rage on, drag other people to sympathize and meddle, yet I commend him for being a better person by not doing what his offender did. ***** Being the eldest in the family, I was often given responsibilities on taking care of my sibling and younger cousins. Having a large age gap, I was put on quite ironic situations that require me to think like an adult yet at the same time ride on their activities like playing kid’s games, getting on kiddie rides, watching kiddie movies and running around on playgrounds. ***** We had this one classmate who often states her side comments on anything and anyone, which is rather offensive than constructive most of the time. Her attitude earned her dislikes and even made her a topic of discussions. Some would say she was immature to behave that way, without realizing they weren’t becoming any different when they were actually destroying her by talking behind her back, and were actually contributing nothing to the resolution of the said issue. ***** I was strolling at a department store with my friend when we came across a pile of wallet with cutesy designs and feminine colors. We started checking out the items and were actually shrieking “Ang cute! Gusto ko neto!” when she suddenly said “Hindi ba ang tanda na natin para dito?”, I looked up and started laughing upon realizing we were going gaga at the TECHNOLOGY. Youth of today are highlighted because of their great contribution in today’s technological innovations. Definitely, we need advancement in order to adapt to the needs, not only inside our vicinity, but also to the demands of the world. We are considered as one of the third world countries. Advancement is a process where we cultivate past product into a more productive creation. We examined everything and satisfy our curiosity. Old generation is saying that technology will just ruin the dreams of the teen and will dump the last hope that our country needs. I guess, they conclude it wrong. The truth is, technology help the teens to raise Philippines from disgrace and let technology guide their life trough success. POLITICS. As we can see, the youth of today is given such a bad name when it is only minority of teens are creating social distraction. Most youth are very much motivated and passionate enough in everything they do. Young people have different perspectives and a lot of ideas. It is voiced out by the help of a union that represents youth in the field of politics, just like what Kabataan Party List is engaged with. By letting them express their opinion, we could be opening and moving the political dimension forward. This is necessary for the society, not only good for it. If the youths are not involved with politics, there might be many issues that will result for an unfair judgment and unsustainable for future generation. Their view matters a lot, for they occupy a large portion of our society, and they should be allowed more access to politics to shape the world we live in.

15 accessories located at the kids section of the department store. ***** “Maturity is when your world opens up and you realize that you are not the center of it.” -M.J. Croan Looking back at my juvenile years, I remember waking up in the morning with meals already prepared and all my stuffs for school ready. I remember spending my mornings sitting at the sofa watching cartoons. There were times I would even complain when my mother would block the view of the television while she was sweeping the floor and was busy doing household chores. I remember making promises to my parents that I won’t ask for anything just so they may take me out on a Sunday, yet later on having tantrums for the toys they haven’t bought me. I understand now how tough it must have been for my parents, an all the other parents to pra ***** As I was walking home, I came across a bunch of children busy playing, when suddenly one of them called for the other kid approaching that was carrying a tray of “turon” and banana cue. “Sus, bumili ka na lang o. dali na!” the kid said. Maturity is a state of mind, a product of our instincts and learnings, a sense of independence and responsibility and a measure a person's ability to adapt and react towards his surroundings. Certainly, Maturity is different from growing old.

We learn our lessons from our experiences but we cannot have our experiences without the use of anything. In cost accounting, there is a term “cost driver” that is defined as a factor that causes change in a particular activity. Any activity has a direct cause-effect relationship. We need a booster to keep us alive. With the certainty presented above, we still need to believe that the youth of today has still something to offer. Given the chance, we, the young minds of this world can be the best of what we can be. Starting from now, I encourage all Filipinos to be optimistic, embolden and train the youth, along with the person who believes in them, and shape them into the people truly worthy to be the hope. As quoted in NUSP.org, “‘Tayo (Kabataan) ang Pagasa ng Bayan’ is a constant and militant reminder for every Filipino youth. It is a five-word theory and practice of vigilance. It is a word of unity against individualism and selfish ambition. It is a reminder to protect the interest of the students, youth, and the marginalized sectors. It is a vigilant vow to serve, protect, and fight for the basic masses.” Dr. Jose Rizal’s vision is not far from reality. The gap between the generations is the problem. We need to stand hand in hand, and believe that each and every one of us has the space that we alone can occupy. Let the youth stand with own might and use their mind to move forward. We need to set hope to the hopes of the nation. If only all the Filipinos, young and old alike, would cooperate, then we could make a big difference.

FAITH OVER CONTROVERSIES

It hit the news. Been immortalized on newspapers. Been discussed on television. People talked about it. Took sides. Heated up the issue. Shared their opinions. Bashed and defended. The story went on and on that no one knew what’s true and what’s not. Only them. And amidst the controversies involving their doctrine, their faith in their Church Ministers and beliefs remain unwavering. Proving this, the newly acknowledged non-acad org— exclusive for INC members— named Chrisitian Brotherhood International or CBI stands tall hand in hand. CBI was founded in 1986 by the INC Administration. It’s a group of students in a particular school or university, sharing same beliefs and under the same roof of religion. CBI is under the aegis of INC’s BUKLOD-KADIWABINHI promoting harmonious relations among its members and shedding light on attaining academic excellence and knowledge of their doctrines that will guide them through and through. INC Pupians first attempted to form CBI in 2012 but failed to do so. Now, it’s a legitimate org comprising more or less 55 members headed by Krizelle Manoto as the President; Jorrel Garife as the V.P Internal; Joshua Lago the V.P External; their committee heads and under the supervision of Prof. Bartolome San Juan. CBI PUP-Branch is open for all INC members even from different school and university. CBI PUP is just the center branch of all INC students in Sto.Tomas and nearby towns.

COMMUNITY Free BREAD, Now Serving PUP

Being a nonprofit, non-stock organization, their future projects, mostly, are exclusive for their members only but they’re still considering of way to do something that will benefit and involve all PUPians like tree-planting and such. And also, they will conduct bible-reading sessions that will be open for everyone since people are similar in many ways rather than the profound difference of religion. Their first scheduled project is on Oct.22 at Sto.Tomas Gym, a team building that aims to put a tighter bind among all the members. They also call out for all the INC PUPians who haven’t signed up yet as official member especially those who are freshmen. When asked to say something about the issue their religion is facing, Ms. Manoto and Mr. Garife came up with a zealous answer on behalf of everyone in CBI. CBI kicked-off with a big controversy on hand but will definitely get through with it strong and untarnished. They’re just starting to write their history in PUP and heading off to the right track. -ReiJanGon

“Blessed is he that readeth, and that they hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which an overwritten therein: for the time is at him.” Revelations 1:3 To fully nourish the spirituality of the youth, PUP-STB unveils a new Religious Organization known as BREAD Society of the Philippines (Bible Reader. It was officially declared as legitimate religious organization in PUP-STB on February 22. As reflected in their constitution and by-laws, BREAD Society aims to institutionalize Bible Reading, studying and putting it into constant practice, to constantly uplift the morality of impaired image of the youth. This nonsectarian, non-stock, nonprofit, socio civic youth organization was established in 1998. Students from City College of Manila, PUP, and TIP, QC were the pioneering schools. The organization was first known for different names: “Truth Seekers Club” in PUP, “BIBLE Readers Society” in TUP and there were some used the name “BASIC” which stood for Brothers and Sisters in Christ. On 25th of February 1999, the name BIBLE Readers Society of the Philippines was registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission as the official name of the organization.

UNLOCKED

The newly acknowledged religious organization is headed by Mr. Pit Maliksi, and a set of PUPian officers. Krist Jasper Parangan (ECE 2-1) is assigned as the Chapter Coordinator and DIA is Norielyn Tablisa (IE 4-1). The position of Events Organizer goes to Arman Penaranda (BBTE 2-1) and Giselle Burgos (ECE 5-1) for finance. For membership officer, there is Queenie Pura (BSA 2-1) and John Paul Pura for Media and IT (EE 2-1). According to Peñaranda, pragmatic and principled professors who inculcates their young minds with a love of learning and putting it into practice paved their way to introduce the organization in PUP-STB. It is evident that everyone have witnessed how this world turned into rust, their lifestyle, idealism and perspective and the best solution that BREAD could think of is, “Words of God which liveth and abideth forever” as written in Peter 1:23 where it is incorruptible that can cease the process of corruption and decay. The BREAD Society have already accomplished a seminar on disaster preparedness, team building, workshops, BREAD Jam, Tree planting, Mass bloodletting, and Feeding programs and others. BREAD encourages everyone to join them in awakening the spiritual hearts of the youth, to learn to learn to have an optimistic view in life through God’s words and in everything they do, their battle cry will be heard: Once KABREAD, Always KABREAD.

Ligaw

Mahal mo ako? John Lovell Alladel Pero mahal mo rin siya Sabi mo maghintay ako Ika’y naiisip, umaga’t gabi Sabi mo may puwang ako sayo Hinahanap-hanap matamis mong ngiti Lahat nalang ng sinabi mo Hindi inakalang, iyong sisirain Hanggang ngayon sinasaktan parin ako Pangako mong ako’y iyong iibigin

Shhh…

Ilang buwan kang sinuyo, Niloadan at pinagluto Yun pala sayo’y di papasa Ako’y lubha mong pinaasa
