ISLAND’S HOTEL OCCUPANCY, DAILY ROOM RATES ON THE RISE Visitor arrivals to Maui rose 5.9 percent in 2012 over 2011, according to a new report by Smith Travel Research and Hospitality Advisors. Hotel occupancy in Wailea increased to 77.4 percent, an increase of 7.3 percentage points. Wailea’s average daily rate for rooms increased slightly to $387.34, compared to the Lahaina-Kaanapali-Kapalua areas’ 73.6 percent occupancy and average daily rate of $235.06. Looking at the month of December 2012, Maui island showed a 5.1 percent increase in occupancy over the same month in 2011. The strong number was attributed to increases in the meetings, convention and incentive market (up 49.8 percent) and the marriage/honeymoon market (up 22.4 percent). Wailea set a December record for occupancy at 79.9 percent.
CELEBRATING KAL GAJOUM Born in Tripoli in 1968, Kal Gajoum entered his first art competition when he was a mere ten years old. Shortly thereafter, he was introduced to oil painting and palette knife techniques at the famed Leonardo Da Vinci School of Art in Rome. He spent the next several years dedicating himself to furthering his technique. In 1983 he was invited to hold his first exhibition in Tripoli at age 15. After a successful showing, he decided to take his art to the next level and moved to Paris to learn watercolor techniques and Parisian style painting through private instruction. In 1992 he returned to Tripoli for another successful exhibition and then settled in Malta, where he lived as a full time professional artist working under the Royal Fine Art Gallery for seven years. He made the decision to continue his pursuit of artistic knowledge and traveled to Tunisia, hosting various successful exhi-
bitions during this time. In 2000, Kal relocated to Britain where he ran the Center of Britain Art Gallery and started a permanent exhibition in the City of Carlisle, where he steadily perfected his palette knife techniques. In 2003, he immigrated to Canada where he now splits his time between residences in British Columbia and Quebec creating cityscapes and still life masterpieces. With paintings in prestigious collections across the globe, Kal Gajoum is an exciting modern master, who has rapidly established himself as a prominent figure in today’s art world. Join us to celebrate Kal Gajoum, Wednesday, March 13, 2013 from 6:30-9:30pm. For more information, contact Eclectic Image Gallery at 874-0701 or www.eigmaui.com

There I go with my favorite quotes again. But you have no doubt noticed that we have had some changes in our tenant mix. One store moves out, another moves in, another moves to a new location and stays herein. I really didn’t try to make that rhyme. As the saying goes, “change is good.” A thriving business isn’t one that necessarily adapts to change but rather sets the trend or the benchmark that others will adapt to. In that light we are always looking for opportunities to “up our game” or “raise the bar” through improving everything we do, including the quality of the stores that make up The Shops at Wailea. The Art of Peter Max, Swarovski, Canyon Beachwear and L’Occitane are but a few examples of “change is good.” In the coming months there may be more changes and subsequent improvements, all to ensure our standing as “the finest shopping and dining experience on Maui.” Speaking of dining, Ronald Reagan once quipped that “all great change in America begins at the dinner table.” So might I suggest you try one of our five fabulous restaurants and experience it yourself? Aloha, Robert “Bob” Dye General Manager, CBRE

He honed his management skills with employers such as Lagasse’s Stadium at the Palazzo, The 40/40 Club Las Vegas at the Palazzo, and Desert Pines Golf Club.
