Concert Season
2020 CHOIR | ORCHESTRA | EDUCATION | OUTREACH
Welcome to our 2020 Season
We do have another anniversary to celebrate though: 20 years of the Choral Pilgrimage! We have travelled the length and breadth of the UK over those years, performing in the most beautiful and acoustically rewarding venues, but more importantly meeting inspirational communities, many now-familiar faces and many new, both young and old, from diverse cultures and faiths. The music we bring to our glorious cathedrals and abbeys, imbued with fascinating history, is exquisite. Our 2020 programme will focus on Rome and in particular the Sistine Chapel. All four composers featured had, at some time in their career, an association with this unique chapel, none more so than Gregorio Allegri whose Miserere is regarded by many as the most famous piece of sacred music ever written. We will be showcasing the depth of talent we have in The Sixteen in Handel’s pastoral, Acis and Galatea. It is youthful in every respect - with a grace, a charm, and an innocence about so much of the writing; it is only the giant Polyphemus who brings terror to the proceedings. I have stayed true to Handel’s original performance, 2
where he had at his disposal only five singers and nine instrumentalists. Accordingly, we have chosen more intimate venues, like St Mary’s Church, Warwick, and Derby Cathedral, to present this charming work.
‘ It takes a lot to stay at the head of the choral pack for as long as Harry Christophers and The Sixteen’ The Arts Desk
Our long-term relationships with London’s Wigmore Hall and Kings Place and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall continue to bear fruit, as we explore music by Byrd and Dowland, centred around Byrd’s 1611 collection of Songs and Sonnets and Dowland’s A Pilgrim’s Solace, and continue our critically acclaimed cycle devoted to the genius of Henry Purcell. As part of Nature Unwrapped at Kings Place, our programme, entitled The Earth Resounds, focuses on Brumel’s extraordinary ‘Earthquake Mass’ and Lassus’ gorgeously evocative 10-part setting of Aurora lucis rutilat. We close the year with our customary Christmas tour; this is a programme for everyone with traditional carols such as The truth from above performed alongside Byrd’s lively Laetentur caeli, Arnold Bax’s massively sonorous Mater ora filium and Will Todd’s peacefully evocative My Lord has come. All that remains for me to say is a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. If you are contemplating making a donation to us, we would be delighted to hear from you. Welcome to The Sixteen’s 2020 season. How can we possibly better the amazing achievements and packed schedule of last year’s 40th anniversary? Well, we can’t: but what we will be doing is building on the wonderful opportunities and fabulous audiences that 2019 brought.
will have an immediate impact upon the scope of our concerts, tours, recordings and outreach work, and it would be wonderful to welcome you to The Sixteen family.

Handel Acis & Galatea Handel’s pastoral opera is a tale of love, tragedy and liberation, with the eternal love between mortal shepherd Acis and goddess Galatea doomed by the jealous cyclops Polyphemus. The volume and variety of Purcell’s output is truly incredible. Hear my prayer and Let mine eyes run down with tears are two great anthems of English church music, displaying Purcell’s rich harmonic and melodic language at its most original. However, the tour de force of the programme is Scarlatti’s setting of the Stabat mater - a work that perfectly showcases the virtuosity of The Sixteen.
As Catholics, both Byrd and Dowland lived much of their later lives under threat of arrest. Drawn from the last publications of their lives, curiously juxtaposing the spiritual and profane, 12 singers explore the songs of yearning, unrequited love and sacred devotion written by two men forced to conceal their faith.
Handel wrote his 11 Chandos Anthems in 1717-18 for the inimitable Duke of Chandos. Despite only having modest musical forces at his disposal, these anthems convey immense strength. They stood outside the mainstream of everyday church music, perfectly conveying the selfconfident and hedonistic spirit of the time.

16th-century composers Tallis and Byrd wrote at times of religious turmoil and national upheaval, producing magnificent works of beauty and musical mastery. Their legacy can be traced to some of Britain’s most celebrated 20th- and 21stcentury composers, including Britten, Tippett and James MacMillan, whose works complete this enlightening programme.
Simulating the phenomenon of trembling land, Brumel’s astonishing Earthquake Mass creates textures that literally seem to shake. Josquin’s O virgo prudentissima evokes images of craggy rocks and dark whirlwinds, while Lassus’s Aurora lucis rutilat (‘Dawn reddens with light’) creates a truly spectacular display of choral fireworks.
Arguably The Sixteen’s most popular programme of all time, The Queen of Heaven focuses on three composers’ unique devotion to the church. A new version of Allegri’s renowned Miserere is paired with James MacMillan’s own setting of the text and pieces by ‘The Prince of Polyphony’ Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.

2020 sees the 500 anniversary of the birth of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, the driving force behind Queen Elizabeth I’s reign for four decades. Appointed High Steward of Westminster in 1561 it is fitting that a celebration of music from his era should be held in St Margaret’s Church. Palestrina is perhaps the most famous of all Renaissance composers. He had a vast influence on the development of music and his work can be seen as a summation of Renaissance polyphony. Education The Sixteen’s extensive Education and Outreach programme supports creativity throughout the UK’s communities each year.
‘ Mr Christophers is a very nice man and an EXCELLENT conductor. But Mr Turner, please can we have a sackbut?’ Chorister Workshop participant, Derby Cathedral
An integral part of our mission is to promote and advance public awareness of the repertoire we perform, whilst also using the power of music to engage, inspire and transform musical education. A particular area of interest, which is close to Harry and the ensemble’s heart, is young people who may not have had access to music in school and are in culturally underserved areas where arts provision is low. Following on from the legacy of our anniversary year, we will be undertaking residencies in Carlisle, Manchester, Rochester and London, uniting communities through singing and the mutual appreciation of music. On a daily basis we witness the power of music to promote health and wellbeing, uplift and transcend boundaries of language and faith. In addition to our residencies we 24
have an extensive programme of projects that take place across the UK and internationally, from masterclasses to chorister workshops, and from our Insight Days to schools’ matinee performances we encourage the values of listening and performing as part of a group in an engaging and accessible way for all. Collaboration is at the core of our Education and Outreach programme: If you would like to participate, collaborate or engage with one of our Education and Outreach events, please contact: Amanda MacLeod Education and Outreach Manager amanda@thesixteen.com 020 7936 3420

Genesis Sixteen Apprenticeship scheme, countertenor Francis Gush appointed as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court, tenor Euan Williamson gain a place in the renowned vocal group VOCES8 and bass Nathan Harrison gain a place in early music ensemble Stile Antico.
Now entering its ninth year, Genesis Sixteen is The Sixteen’s unique free training scheme that aims to nurture the next generation of talented young ensemble singers, helping them to bridge the gap between student and professional performer. During the year-long scheme singers receive group tutoring from conductor Harry Christophers and associate conductor Eamonn Dougan, individual and consort mentoring from members of The Sixteen and masterclasses run by some of the industry’s top vocal experts. 26
In 2014 the scheme was expanded to include a Conducting Scholarship, supporting graduate conductors in the early stages of their career. Thanks to a close partnership with the Genesis Foundation participants not only receive free tuition but also a bursary to cover all additional costs.
Applications for the 2020 - 21 group open in November 2019. Full details can be found on our website, where you can also keep up to date with all forthcoming Genesis Sixteen performances.
This is the UK’s first fully funded programme of its kind and a number of alumni from the first eight years have gone on to enjoy much success since graduating. This year, we saw six alumni singers take part in the 2018-19 Monteverdi Choir 27
