The Sixteen – an overview After 38 years of worldwide performance and recording, The Sixteen is recognised as one of the world’s greatest ensembles. Comprising both choir and period-instrument orchestra, The Sixteen’s total commitment to the music it performs is its greatest distinction. A special reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance, bringing fresh insights into Baroque and early Classical music and a diversity of 20th-century music, is drawn from the passions of conductor and founder Harry Christophers.

At home in the UK, The Sixteen are “The Voices of Classic FM” and Associate Artists of The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. The group promotes The Choral Pilgrimage, an annual tour of the UK’s finest cathedrals, which aims to bring music back to the buildings for which it was written. The Sixteen featured in the highly successful BBC television series, Sacred Music, presented by actor Simon Russell Beale.

Seven years ago the group launched a new training programme for young singers called Genesis Sixteen. Aimed at 18 to 23 year-olds, this is the UK’s

first fully-funded choral programme for singers designed specifically to bridge the gap from student to professional practitioner.

Job Description The Education Manager will be responsible for devising and managing The Sixteen’s programme of education and creative learning activity and will have at least three years’ relevant experience in this area. Key responsibilities include: managing The Sixteen’s young artist programme, Genesis Sixteen; the Choral Pilgrimage annual workshop series; a touring family show; a series of Schools’ Matinee Concerts; auditions; chorister masterclasses; and general outreach activities.

Roles & Responsibilities 

Respond creatively to The Sixteen’s artistic programmes to design an inspiring, well-rounded and inclusive outreach and education programme for all ages and backgrounds.



Effectively develop and guide all stages of each project, where appropriate with animateur/conductor, from initial concept through to planning, delivery, monitoring and final evaluation.



Manage all aspects of The Sixteen’s young artist scheme ‘Genesis Sixteen’, including co-ordination of four residential courses, booking and management of staff, annual auditions across the UK, and liaison with funders and press.



Oversee all Choral Pilgrimage-related education activity including The Sixteen’s Choral Workshop Series, Schools’ Matinee Programme, Insight Days and Chorister Masterclasses.



Nurture existing relationships and endeavour to build new partnerships with key stakeholders including education institutions, cultural organisations, music hubs and arts venues.



Work closely with the Marketing Manager and PR company to ensure appropriate coverage of education activities, and to provide copy for all Sixteen marketing material (including website, print and social media outlets).

Input and manage all education related events and information on The Sixteen website.



Effectively plan and manage all education budgets, providing end of year reviews for the CEO and board.



Work closely with the Development team to co-ordinate funding applications.



Event management for all education events and occasional rehearsal and concert management with the main choir.



Supervising the Office & Events Assistant, who is a central point of contact for choral workshops, chorister masterclasses and also assists with Genesis audition planning.



Devise and manage the annual Sounds Sublime Festival, a showcase for young choral groups from across the UK.



Continue the development of the new family strand of The Sixteen’s education programme, including management of The Fairy Queen family show tour.



Regularly update The Sixteen’s Safeguarding Policy and ensure anyone involved in education projects works within these guidelines, obtaining enhanced DBS checks when necessary.



Attend relevant conferences and training days to stay up-to-date with changing governmental policies and the general music education landscape.

Skills and Experience        

A minimum of three years working in arts/education administration, or in a related field A passionate advocate for music and music education Experience of project planning, implementation and management Clear enthusiasm for working with young people Natural creativity and the ability to think innovatively about how to include the widest possible audience in our projects Excellent time-management and administrative skills High levels of accuracy and attention to detail Financially literate with previous experience of managing budgets and contributing to funding applications 3

Excellent written and verbal communication skills Friendly, approachable and nurturing personality Ability to work independently and as part of a team Fluent in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Outlook and Excel.

Ability to read music is essential and a good knowledge of mainstream choral repertoire is desirable
