Welcome to our Season Brochure
Byrd at 400 forms the focus of our 2023 season. He is undoubtedly the foremost composer of Elizabethan England with his works ranking among the finest of the late Renaissance. Our Choral Pilgrimage is devoted to celebrating the 400th anniversary of William Byrd’s death and we will be looking at his influences, his colleagues and his pervading faith.
For our Wigmore Hall concert in March, I have devised a programme concentrating on those final years with actor, Noel Byrne, as the voice of Byrd. In fact, our latest album release is of Byrd’s last publication Psalmes, Songs and Sonnets and, believe it or not, this is the first complete recording of this collection with 14 of the works receiving their debut. After 400 years we have at last redressed that omission.
choir and orchestra come together for Haydn’s Nelson Mass – it’s dramatic, it’s sophisticated, it’s also very personal but ultimately it is triumphant. We have some Mozart as well for you, his Solemn Vespers and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to have the orchestra stripping the cobwebs off his ever popular and delightful Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
This will be a season full of variety and beautiful music to inspire and to warm our hearts. I cannot wait to share it with you.
Now for something completely different –the inspirational jazz pianist, Julian Joseph, is going to join us at Kings Place for an evening of music by Monteverdi during the course of which we will fuse two very distinctive traditions – baroque meets jazz. Be prepared for something very special. Move on a few centuries and our
The summer sees us reignite our collaboration with Grange Festival. After the stunning success of Handel’s Belshazzar in 2019, we will be presenting a double bill of Gluck’s Orfeo and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. With Heather Lowe in the title roles alongside Helen Charlston and James Newby, you will also be witness to our very own sopranos Katy Hill and Kirsty Hopkins showing their devious side as the scheming witches. I am looking forward, in particular, to our orchestra bringing Gluck’s score to life, brimming with harmony and invention and also joining up once again with Danny Slater (producer) and Tim Claydon (choreographer) – we really do make a force to be reckoned with.

The Choral Pilgrimage 2023: A Watchful Gaze
2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance.
William Byrd was widely admired in his own time both at home and abroad and the influence he had on future generations of composers was immense. This programme explores the music of his influences, colleagues and pervading faith, and brings his legacy firmly into the modern day.

Orfeo ed Euridice / Dido and Aeneas
We are delighted to return to the Grange Festival with an operatic double-bill. Both timeless love stories, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice follows Orfeo on a mission through the underworld of Hades to rescue his love Euridice. Dido, one of the most revered women in the ancient world falls for Trojan hero Aeneas, a relationship that ultimately ends in tragedy. Paired as mirror images of each other, both operas end with two of the most adored arias ever written.
DIDO AND AENEAS
Dido is one of the most revered women in the ancient world: the clever and enterprising founder of the prosperous city state of Carthage. Aeneas is on his long journey back from Troy and calls on her. They fall for each other, but his abrupt departure after a brief sojurn of passion drives her to despair and suicide. Henry Purcell famously wrote Dido and Aeneas for a girls school in Chelsea. It is the first English opera, and one of the greatest of all.

ORFEO ED EURIDICE
First performed in 1762 in Vienna Orfeo ed Euridice was written as a reaction against the vocal excesses and dramatic confusions which then typified Italian opera. It is simple, direct and intensely moving. The demi-God Orpheus enchants all nature with his music and poetry. His wedding with Euridice (a version of Persephone) is tragically interrupted when a snake bites and kills her. He pursues her into the underworld using all his charm and craft and tries to bring her back but with Cupid’s warning that even a single direct look into her eyes will end her life eternally. She understandably resists his increasingly fervent attempts to lead her back to life without her once seeing his face and in desperation he gives in.

The Stabat Mater is without doubt, one of the most powerful poems of the liturgy and one which has inspired artists through the ages. This programme showcases contrasting interpretations of this moving text, from the intricate harmonic language of contemporary composer Alissa Firsova, drawing on her roots in Russian Orthodoxy, to the exquisite contrapuntal poise of Palestrina, and Anerio’s glorious and ambitious 12-part setting.

The result is majestic and overwhelming, and the piece has often been described as the greatest piece of early English choral music, and Tallis’s crowning achievement. Learning and Participation
have rarely seen so many young people so completely engaged and so fully committed to participation. It was truly inspiring to watch. Without doubt, The Sixteen team planted seeds in young minds today and we can only stand back in awe and watch as those seeds germinate and grow.”
Graham Cotgreave, Community Music PartnerAn integral part of our mission is to promote and advance public awareness of the repertoire we perform, whilst also using the power of music to engage, inspire and transform musical education.
In 2023 we will continue to focus on reaching those who would not usually have access to choral music, specifically working with underrepresented groups within the industry.
We will undertake Residencies in five locations in England (County Durham, Peterborough, Leeds and Bradford, Medway and Cornwall), and will work with children aged 5-18, older people at risk of isolation, refugees, care home residents, and those affected by homelessness. In addition to the Residency programme a further 600 young singers from around the country will have the opportunity to take part in 12 Singing Workshops led by expert vocal practitioners. The Sixteen will also share its expertise with amateur adult singers around the UK through a series of Choral Workshops. Nurturing the next generation of Choral practitioners, much of the Learning and Participation programme will be supported and delivered by alumni of the Genesis Sixteen Young Artist programme.
On a daily basis we witness the power of music to promote health and wellbeing, uplift and transcend boundaries of language and faith, and collaboration is at the core of our programme. Having reached its 40th birthday in 2019, The Sixteen has dedicated its existence to keeping the great choral tradition alive and thriving. As it contemplates the future, it recognises that the continuance of its work is the single most important element to secure for generations to come. The handing down of the craft of choral singing and conducting and enabling audiences to discover choral music of the past, present and the future is more than a life’s work. Please help us to ensure that The Sixteen remains an enduring voice in years to come by leaving a legacy in your Will.
A residuary gift: the residue (or a proportion of the residue) of an estate after all other gifts, debts and expenses have been paid
A pecuniary gift: a fixed sum of money
A specific gift: an identifiable asset such as a property or an investment.
If you have already made a Will, or have updated it recently, you can add a legacy or bequest to The Sixteen by drafting a codicil. We have suggested wording below but recommend that you consult a solicitor to ensure that the Will or codicil is valid and your wishes are realised.
If you leave a Legacy to The Sixteen (registered charity 326917) it will not be subject to inheritance tax. Therefore, a legacy gift made to The Sixteen will be deducted from the value of the estate before tax liability is calculated.
“I give (the residue) / (—% of the residue) of my estate absolutely to The Sixteen (registered charity number 326917) of Mary Sumner House, 24 Tufton Street, London SW1P 3RB and I direct that the proceeds may be used for the general purposes of The Sixteen. I further direct that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer of The Sixteen for the time being shall be full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy.”
A gift in your Will is a very personal matter.
If you are interested in leaving a legacy, of any kind, to The Sixteen then we invite you to discuss your plans with us in confidence, to make sure that your wishes are understood and can be fulfilled.
Pecuniary Legacy
Alternatively, if you have already remembered The Sixteen in your Will then we would love to hear from you and thank you for your special gift.

I further direct that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer of The Sixteen for the time being shall be full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy.”
