We are 40 Welcome to The Sixteen’s 40th anniversary season. Can it really be 40 years since a fledgling group of singers gave their first concerts as The Sixteen in May 1979? To celebrate this milestone in our life we have a year of exciting and adventurous projects lined up.

Our Choral Pilgrimage, which has now become an integral part of our planning, will look back to our grass roots of performing English Renaissance music. It features Robert Fayrfax, John Sheppard and Robert Wylkynson’s monumental Salve Regina from the miraculous Eton Choirbook alongside evocative works from our own age by Sir John Tavener and Eric Whitacre. These are paired with an amazing new work composed especially for us by Sir James MacMillan based on a fragment from the Eton Choirbook.

Ten venues will play host to one of my favourite works of all time, Monteverdi’s stunning Vespers of 1610, quite simply one of the greatest works of sacred music ever written. Cathedrals such as Derby, Worcester and Chichester will resonate with virtuosity. Monteverdi stretches every singer and instrumentalist’s versatility to the limit, yet his demands have an exhilarating effect.

Our hugely rewarding relationships with London’s Wigmore Hall and Kings Place and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall continue, exploring music from the Chapel Royal with 2

extracts from Samuel Pepys’s fascinating diary as well as continuing our Purcell cycle at the Wigmore Hall. As part of Venus Unwrapped at Kings Place, our programme will feature many pieces by female composers commissioned by us in association with the Genesis Foundation.

At various stages throughout the year we will be returning to Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Spain, Australia and making our first visit to Singapore.

In June and July we will be staging Handel’s Belshazzar at the Grange Festival in a new and vibrant production by Daniel Slater with a cast of fine Handelians. Nestled in the heart of the idyllic Hampshire countryside, the Grange’s Orangery is the perfect setting to enjoy baroque opera.

We close the year with our customary Christmas tour: the programme will include Benjamin Britten’s ever-popular Ceremony of Carols. And for those who have felt bereft of our annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, I am delighted to reveal that arrangements are being finalised for a December date which will be announced in the autumn. What better way to polish off our anniversary year?

Our 2019 Choral Pilgrimage brings together music past and present, highlighting The Sixteen’s choral journey over the last 40 years. Our close relationship with Sir James MacMillan continues with a new commission O virgo prudentissima, contrasted with music by Fayrfax performed on our very first recording, alongside music by Wylkynson and Sheppard.

These fine examples of English polyphony are juxtaposed with stunning music by Tavener and Eric Whitacre in our 40th anniversary year.

The Sixteen at Christmas Our programme for Christmas 2019 features Britten’s hugely popular A Ceremony of Carols. This masterful and idiomatic work continues to be a staple of the choral canon and is an example of Britten’s genius. From the Book of Daniel, Handel’s dramatic oratorio tells of the fall of Babylon at the hands of Cyrus the Great and the freeing of the Jewish nation. This is grand Baroque opera, an early Aida perhaps. The chorus plays centre stage, at once pleasure-seeking Babylonians, or solemn Jews, or noble Persians.

This previously rarely staged masterpiece provides the perfect opportunity for a unique collaboration between The Grange Festival and The Sixteen in a celebration of our 40th anniversary.

The Sixteen choir and orchestra will be joined by The Grange Festival chorus and a starry cast of Handelian luminaries, bringing biblical high drama to thrilling life in this fully staged opera production.

Handel’s pastoral opera with libretto by John Gay based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses (book XIII) is a tale of love, tragedy and liberation.

The eternal love between the mortal shepherd Acis and goddess Galatea is doomed by the jealous cyclops Polyphemus. Handel’s music beautifully demonstrates the pain and love in such beautiful, dramatic choruses as ‘Wretched lovers!’ and the grief felt by Galatea in ‘Must I my Acis still bemoan’.

A programme celebrating music by the Masters of the Children at the Chapel Royal and those linked to Pepys from the time of the Restoration. Anthems by Cooke, Blow and Humfrey are interspersed with extracts from the diary of Samuel Pepys, who gives us a first-hand account of the music performed in the chapel and his frank opinion of the music and choristers of the time.

Staying true to the premiere in 1718, Harry Christophers will use only five singers and nine instrumentalists in this intimate performance.

The Eton Choirbook uniquely preserves some of the most spectacular music composed in Britain. Had this book not survived, dozens of superb pieces would have been irretrievably lost and with them a legacy that has informed and influenced scores of composers for more than 500 years.

This recording emphasises that legacy with the premiere of four new commissions by contemporary composers all inspired by the works from the Eton Choirbook alongside which they sit.

Genesis Sixteen

The Sixteen’s extensive Education and Outreach programme inspires and supports creativity throughout the UK’s communities each year.

An integral part of our mission is to promote and advance public awareness of the repertoire we perform whilst also connecting the power of music to engage, inspire and transform musical education. A particular area of interest which is 26

close to Harry and the ensemble’s heart is young people who may not have had access to music in school and are in culturally underserved areas where arts provision is low.

To mark this in our anniversary year, we will be undertaking residencies in various locations across the UK, uniting communities through singing and the mutual appreciation of music.

Over the last 40 years, we have witnessed its power to promote health and wellbeing, uplift and transcend boundaries of language and faith.

Through our extensive programme of projects from masterclasses to chorister workshops, and from our Insight Days to schools’ matinee performances, we encourage the values of listening and performing as part of a group in an engaging and accessible way for all.

This is the UK’s first fully funded programme of its kind and a number of alumni from the first seven years have gone on to enjoy much success since graduating. This year, we saw five Genesis alumni singers form part of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain Fellowship Octet, countertenor Tristram Cooke finish his first full year as permanent Lay Vicar at Westminster Abbey and recently graduated mezzo-soprano Katie Jeffries-Harris gain a place as alto 1 in the renowned vocal group VOCES8.

Now entering its eighth year, Genesis Sixteen is The Sixteen’s unique free training scheme that aims to nurture the next generation of talented young ensemble singers, helping them to bridge the gap between student and professional performer.

During the year-long scheme singers receive group tutoring from conductor Harry Christophers and associate conductor Eamonn Dougan, individual and consort mentoring

from members of The Sixteen and masterclasses run by some of the industry’s top vocal experts.

In 2014 the scheme was expanded to include a Conducting Scholarship, supporting graduate conductors in the early stages of their career.

Thanks to a close partnership with the Genesis Foundation participants not only receive free tuition but also a bursary to cover all additional costs.

Applications for the 2019 - 2020 group open in November 2018.
