the columns that support thesmartclub web site … be part of the world’s largest independent club for all things smart

Welcome to the latest edition of ‘4site’, thesmartclub’s newsletter bringing you a review of what has gone by in the world of smart together with a look forward to forthcoming events, news and features. Our relaunched editions of ‘4site’ follow on from a highly successful run of our earlier ‘4site’ newsletters in 2004 and 2005 - these latter issues experienced an amazing 26000 copies being downloaded from our web site. I am confident that during 2007 and beyond, whilst we expect an ever increasing number of downloads, we will see further distribution and circulation and I am delighted to announce that paper copies will now be posted to all our Members who do not have internet access and in addition, copies are being provided to every UK smart Retailer in addition to a number of smart Retailers across Europe. Our new approach and services will help ensure that wherever you are and whatever method you use to seek information about ‘all things smart’, thesmartclub will strive to keep you in touch. It’s also great to see thesmartclub strengthening its position and not only the world’s largest independent smart car club, but we are still the UK’s second largest single marque car club of any automotive manufacturer. Towards the end of 2006, publicity surrounding the launch of the new smart fortwo saw an exponential growth in our Membership applications and visitors to our web site. We currently average 11 new Membership applications every day and by the end of the first quarter in 2007, our web site was averaging 16,100 unique visitors every day. Significantly, by the end of March 2007, we hit a milestone of reaching 100,000 hits per day on our site. It’s a tremendous reflection of the passion and interest across the smart owners and enthusiasts in the 51 countries currently served by thesmartclub. It’s always a balancing act of expanding the company to cater for growing Membership, continuing to expand online services and bringing our Members and visitors a varied range of smart Events and information. This year and throughout 2008, you will see that we have stuck to that ethos with some new and exciting service offerings and events that are detailed in this Newsletter. So what are the highlights we have in this issue?

HAMBACH 2007 Seeing the new smart fortwo being put together under the ‘just in time’ concept and experiencing the outstanding efficiency of the factory (and a good lunch menu) made this 2007 trip to Hambach, smartville another experience not to be missed, even for the regular participants.

May 2007 saw thesmartclub run its annual trip to the birthplace of smart fortwos – smartville in Hambach France. We were amazed to see that despite having run this Event for the last 7 years, it remained as popular as ever with applications reaching us at the rate of 3 per minute when the online forms launched. For sure, although it’s a trip to ‘la belle France’ that has been run before, this 2007 event proved hugely popular as it marked the recent re-opening of the production plant at Hambach to cater for the new smart fortwo. The lucky participants on this 2007 trip were a superb mix of ‘first timers’ and … we could say ‘old timers’ but we’d prefer to say ‘familiar faces’ – it was great to see some of the group returning for their 4th or 5th trip and some of those people had been with us in the first trip to smartville way back in 2001. The journey from Calais was good fun as always with a variety of paces being set.

© thesmartclub ltd 2007

The French autoroutes provided a beautiful opportunity to drive at a pace that was balanced against multiple stop and rest points for those wishing to ‘graze’ and top up caffeine en route. As with recent years, accommodation was provided at ‘Victors’, our old favourite hotel just across the French/German border in Saarbrucken. Yet again outstanding service, great food and a superb location for not only the factory visit but also a great base for local tours.

‘4site’ – Issue 06

We ensured that there was sufficient rest time on the Tuesday following the Monday factory visit and many people took advantage of the reasonable proximity of Nurburgring to have a ‘quiet drive in the country’.

2008 will see us back at Hambach smartville again and our thanks go to all the 2007 participants for the support, courtesy, humour and good fun throughout this year’s Event.

DESTINATION BROOKLANDS 2007 (Cont…)

The 2007 Destination Brooklands online Registrations totalled over 750 applicants which is the highest ever number of applications received online for any one of our events including all the previous London to Brighton runs. Our thanks must also go to everyone who completed their forms so diligently and we took the opportunity to ask you some information about the car you will be bringing to the event. As you can see from the graphic below, there’s a superb mix of smart car models with

the smart fortwo coupe leading the field – it represents 43% of all registrations.

17% of the smarts attending having less than 10,000 miles on the clock.

Interesting to also note the close call between conventional forfours and the Brabus forfour (5% and 4% respectively).

You may recall from the pre event publicity that we announced this event was replacing our conventional London to Brighton run, an event that we had run for the past 7 years. Feedback indicated it was certainly time for a change. That said, Destination Brooklands took on board all your feedback from 2006 and previous years and we have strived to combine the best of the best and provide you with ‘all things smart’.

Those of you who registered may also recall we asked about the approximate mileage of your car so … what’s the highs and lows? Well we have just over 3% of the smarts attending that have covered over 100,000 miles and at the other end of the scale, we have

In addition to the above vehicle statistics, we also asked you whether you had participated in our 2005 and or 2006 London to Brighton run. It’s a case of WELCOME to a bunch of new Members – 34% of you attending Destination Brooklands attended the 2005 L2B whilst 43% attended the 2006 L2B Event.

Lions International Parade For the sixth consecutive year, thesmartclub is pleased to announce it will again be supporting Lions International by participating in the annual parade along the shore at Brighton on 5th August 2007. It’s always good fun and driving through the crowded streets to the waving and cheering is a great smart experience. It is also a tremendous opportunity to raise some cash for Lions International. smart of Austria again hold their ‘smart times’ event in Zell am See, Austria from 24th to 26th August. For the second consecutive year, thesmartclub is actively participating and we have worked closely with smart of Austria, on location in Salzburg, to bring yet another European smart experience to our Members – indeed, smart clubs from all across Europe will be converging on Zell am See for the weekend ‘party’. The format for this year’s event is quite a step change from the 2006 event and is focussed very much on the participant, rather than being a huge corporate spectacular. This follows feedback gathered by thesmartclub and other European clubs following the 2006 Event.

A great initiative called ‘smart and smile’ where local retailers, attractions, taxis and services offer discount in the surrounding villages and towns for the duration of the event to anyone presenting their smart key. In addition, for anyone wishing to again drive up the Grossglockner, admission is reduced from €28 to €18. Plus there is free access to bathing and thermal pools. The Red Bull Parachute team will also be performing and there is a host of live music, entertainment and festivities throughout the weekend. In addition, a range of competitions and the opportunity to take a flight in the ‘Air Taxi’ and then jump out as part of a tandem parachute jump! You can find full details of the

Event at the smart of Austria web site. This year, thesmartclub has organised around a dozen cars to travel through and participate in this Event, gathering in Salzburg and then spending the weekend at Zell am See. You can be sure that our online MessageBoard will bring you images and reports from the Event and we’ll have a full write up and review in the next issue of ‘4site’.

Our thanks must go to Michael, Kirsten and the rest of the team at smart Austria in Salzburg for their help, cooperation and assistance in planning this 2007 event for our members.

SANTIAGO RALLY Roadster Preparations

As many of our longer serving Members may be aware, we are continuing to develop our Roadster following its class win and 3rd Overall success in the 2005 Monte Carlo Endurance Rally. Since then, a new fully FIA compliant cage has been custom built, new safety systems and revised wiring installed, new suspension, induction and exhaust systems and more.

Following some excellent development work carried out in 2005 by Smarts R us, Nottingham, Smartarse Design in Watford, Red Dot Racing, Watford and smart of Milton Keynes the car will now have full support, technical help and diagnostics performed by smart of Edinburgh throughout 2007. Simtek Motorsport electronics have provided some additional electronics and we are also grateful to Stanley Young BSc FIMechE FIEE for his ongoing technical consultation work.

be at Goodwood in early August prior to attending the smart of Austria event in Zell am See later that month. We plan to provide full updates from the Santiago event prior to and post the rally itself and later in 2007 we’ll publish a detailed list of all the modifications carried out on the vehicle.

It’s a lengthy development process with a range of tests scheduled to take place July, August and early September prior to the Santiago event.

The car will be on display at the Destination Brooklands Event on July 28th and will also

As detailed on several performance web sites already, whilst the car is built for reliability and compliant with the various motorsport safety regulations, performance has not been ignored with independent testing showing a 0-100kmh in only 6.6 seconds.

thesmartclub was honoured to be invited to spend a weekend test driving the new smart fortwo in Madrid. First, some positioning. There will be many many journalistic reports over the coming months covering the size, looks and engine specifications of this car so THIS report will take you through what it's like to own, maintain and drive this latest generation fortwo. Our own web site already has a wealth of technical data and specifications of the forthcoming model. So in this report, we look at the differences over the current versions, both positive and negative and hope that from a club and 'owner' or prospective owner's point of view, we answer some of the questions the other articles fail to consider. Some key facts: 1998 saw the 'first' generation smart produced and more than 770,000 of these vehicles have been produced since. The new fortwo really is a second generation smart - not a facelift of the old model and remember it's only really the UK owners that started applying 'mark' conventions to the first generation (i.e. Mark1s, Mark 2s etc). So what about this new 'second generation' fortwo? We think one of the most important points to note is that over the years, smart have Page 8

new smart fortwo (Cont…)

taken note of a number of potential changes, some large, some small. Rather than bring some of these in during phased upgrades to existing models, the new fortwo has saved up a real bag of goodies! :the wheelbase is 55mm longer :the front overhang is 72mm longer and the rear overhang is now an impressive 68mm longer

passenger seat back and you have to be a seriously tall individual before your feet touch the end of the passenger footwell. Next, we have reclining seats! Yes, at long last the seats have a few degrees of recline available which further enhances the comfort and legroom within the cabin area.

The only potential disadvantage we found was that in only a few dozen kilometres of popping in and out the car during the testing, one's feet could catch the underside of this dashboard and leave scuff/mud marks on the fabric. We'd be keen to see how long it takes to have a degree of significant wear and tear on this surface over a couple of years.

:it's better on luggage space the boot area can hold 220 litres (70 litres more than before) and when loaded to the roof, can hold 340 litres (that's an extra 80 litres) :the cabrio has a superb heated glass rear window and the mechanical system of folding this away is a dream to watch and the side roof bars can also now be removed and stored in a storage area in the tail gate. :the rear comprises 4 rather than 6 light clusters :the turning circle is only 8.75m which is better than any other small car on the market There's much more too but, rather than make this report fall into the same style as any other report, let's split this into relevant chunks ...

COMFORT The extra 195mm in length really makes a difference. A slightly longer front, more space in the rear and a stretched centre means that inner space and legroom is outstanding. Push the © thesmartclub ltd 2007

One aspect that would have been beneficial is an adjustable steering column - we did find that there could be instances where the seating/pedal position was ideal but the wheel was not or vice versa. The design of the curved under surface of this dashboard mainly down to USA safety tests - we understand that passenger crash tests are carried out without a safety belt and the passenger knee area has to have a large amount of energy absorption hence the design of the underside of the dashboard.

On the upside however, there's a neat storage area in front of the passenger area (where the old airbag used to be) that can house your CDs or a very flat sandwich. There have been some minor additional changes such as moving the interior light from the rear to a much more sensible (and conventional) location at the front above the rear view mirror. Another surprise was the lack of passenger grab rail on the inner tridion - this is an omission and something that we feel should be introduced. Sun visors are now real sun visors, proper size and effectiveness but without the ability to rotate through 90 degrees The roof sun screen has now changed from the plastic panels to a smooth fabric pull screen.

new smart fortwo (Cont…)

Also good to see that the driver now has control over both passenger and driver windows

The external door handles have been rotated by 90 degrees making it more pleasing to look at and more conventional to operate Lower the rear tailgate and you find a small pull handle on the surface - pull the handle and hey presto, additional storage in the tailgate area.

DRIVING It's a totally different fortwo simple as that. We tested the 52kW and 62kW (71bhp and 84bhp) versions of the car. The first word that springs to mind is 'smooth'. The power delivery is smooth, the 1 litre engine is whisper smooth and the ride is super smooth. © thesmartclub ltd 2007

smart claim that the improved gear change setup improves gear change speeds by 50% there is no doubt it's better (and smoother) and much more refined but we'd give it a 25% improvement - nothing scientific in that analysis, just the feel of the changes itself. At first, we thought we'd discovered a small software glitch with the gears as the car would not change up to 6th gear ... then we realised it is a 5 speed box. OK, nothing wrong there just culturally different having been brought up with the previous 6 speed boxes. The ratios are good with an impressive range in 1st gear. Even in manual mode (and similar to the current gear change software on Roadsters, fortwos etc) keep the foot nailed to the floor and it'll auto upchange anyway. A nice feature however is the ability to skip gears on the way up or down rather than sequentially waiting for each gear to engage. The handling however is awesome. The latest (first generation) fortwo does handle well and is a big improvement over the early models thanks to the revised suspension setup but the new fortwo is a whole different ball game. Throw the car into a negative camber corner and just when you expect an unpredictable front end and a pair of rear wheels that may suddenly decide to exit stage left ... nothing. It reminded us of the Roadster in terms of 'nailing itself to the road'. There is absolutely no doubt that this new fortwo can be driven harder and cope with ‘4site’ – Issue 06

much more demanding corners and conditions compared with it's predecessor. And that is before you come on to the ESP something that other manufacturers have still to master or even offer in a car of this size. The roads used during the tests covered motorway, twisty mountain roads and some very bumpy, seriously poor road surfaces. The car and suspension coped will with all environments and the space, peace and comfort within the cabin area really is a huge improvement. The torque of the 62kW was good (if somewhat 'choked') and even the 52kW was impressive although it had to work hard.

MAINTENANCE A vast number of changes made with the owner in mind now that can't be bad! We all know that to effectively change a headlight bulb in the current fortwo you had to possess the dexterity of a practicing gynaecologist. The great news is the introduction of the 'service panel'. The panel stretches between the two headlights and there are two cunningly hidden levers at the top left and top right of the front grill. Push and lift the two levers and the 'service panel' pops up. It can then be located on two, strong, well designed catches or left to dangle on a bit of strapping. With the panel lifted, access to bulbs and fluids is simple - in Page 10

fact better on the fortwo than many other cars we can think of. A great piece of design work. We are not certain if this ease of access to fluids in a car presents any security issues however ... it is not hooked into the central locking system and we fear that in less salubrious areas on our planet we have visions of this panel being removed by passers by and all sorts of things being done inside the service area (or are we just paranoid?)

Motor show and can also be seen at the Destination Brooklands Event in July.

For the oily amongst us, the sump now features a more conventional looking oil filter and, at last, a sump drain plug.

A micro-hybrid version of the car is also due out - not a fully hybrid but a clever mixture and April 2007 saw a 'limited one' being introduced. Only 1500 coupe versions being manufactured with silver tridion and pyrite grey metallic panels and a host of internal goodies. There are a vast number of changes to the car and it's actually a real joy to drive, live with and maintain.

Panels remain changeable and it's good to see even fewer screws holding these in place it makes the panel change process even simpler.

There are, of course, a few minor niggles that are sure to be resolved in future facelifts but we have absolutely no hesitation is saying that it's a quantum leap forward, it's certainly now really well positioned within the market and is a 'must have' for all current and future fortwo owners. Without a doubt, and MOST importantly, it's still a smart fortwo thesmartclub is very proud indeed to have the opportunity to have tested the new fortwo, well in advance of many UK journalists.

Next is the rear lights - all existing fortwo owners know the score. Out with a socket or spanner to remove the cluster, drop one or more of the plastic nuts as you pull the cluster away from the waterproof seal etc etc). Well, no more. Two neat little panels enable access to the rear light clusters and not a dropped nut or socket set in sight.
