The smart Festival The 2009 smart Festival at Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands, UK was the world’s largest gathering of smart cars for any single Event. Our Online Registrations for this Event were already in excess of 1100 in the weeks building up to the Event and we were confident that the UK event would be well attended. We recorded 1245 smart cars arriving at the venue – it’s a tremendous achievement by all concerned and it reflects the enthusiasm for the car, community and diversity amongst smart car owners and enthusiasts. Of course, with 2010 being thesmartclub’s 10th Anniversary, we are absolutely certain that this year’s smart Festival will be even more successful.

Full details for the 2010 Event will be announced shortly although we can confirm that the 2010 event will take place in September at the spectacular Mercedes-Benz World complex, Brooklands, Weybridge, UK.

The actual date and details of the Registration process, format and timings are likely to be announced towards the end of March onwards. We’ll have this information available via our web sites and by conventional post to our Members with no access to the internet.

We had some superb feedback following the 2009 Event and all the comments and suggestions will continue to help us make this year even better than the last!

Installation of the product has been kept very simple and with minimum impact of your car’s existing wiring.

Product Feature Have you REALLY locked your smart? thesmartclub is delighted to promote one of the most innovative auto products we’ve seen in a long time!

The product comes supplied with full installation instructions, ‘Velcro’ fixing kit for the Control Unit, prewired connector and a pack of cable clamps to make connection to the colour coded central locking wires, earth and the 12v feed.

This ingenious device seamlessly connects with your smart’s central locking system and the unit will play ANY MP3 sound file you have selected to play on a ‘lock’ and/or ‘unlock’ command. The product was invented, and is manufactured by Auto Signal Systems GmbH in Germany. The idea for the unit arose when one of the founders, Andreas Nelskamp of Auto Signal Systems GmbH had been frustrated by the fact his car would only acknowledge a lock or unlock command with a flash of its lights. Was the key pressed once or twice? Nelskamp decided at that point an acoustic confirmation of either the ‘lock’ or ‘unlock’ command would provide the reassurance he sought.

The Control Unit is connected via the push on multi-pin connector and attached to a suitable mounting point using the Velcro strips supplied.

After two years of development, testing and market research, the ‘hiir’ product was launched.

A range of MP3 sound effects are available with the unit and more can be purchased from the Manufacturer – however you can also load your own MP3 file(s) on the SD Card supplied. The two control buttons on the unit set volume and also determine the sequence of MP3 files that are played.

The system comprises two key components: •

A main control unit of the device is approximately the size of a cigarette packet and contains the microprocessor controls, amplifier and, importantly, an SD card reader A loudspeaker unit for mounting in the front panel area of the car

It really is a unique product and one that is sure to appeal to a wide range of smart car owners and enthusiasts. You can purchase this product directly from thesmartclub’s Online Store from mid March or by calling +44 (0) 845 299 0332. See our advert on page 15 of this Issue of ‘4site’.

Steph is an accomplished airbrush artist of note and his designs adorn several public buildings in Jersey including the General Hospital as well as clubs and private houses. Understandably he loathes ‘plastic wraps’ and computer generated artwork, much preferring original creativity. He had a fairly free reign as to the subject matter, but his brief was to make it as dramatic as possible. A spare set of panels were sent in the post to Jersey and eventually they were sent back all airbrushed and ready to be fitted.

Features Paul & Steph’s Ocean Glamour Fantasy

I have been fascinated by the Smart car for a good many years before I took the plunge and purchased one. As an enthusiast of microcars and having previously owned a Messerschmitt KR200, an Isetta 300 and currently owning a Goggomobil TS300 Coupe, for me the Smart represents the ultimate modern day microcar! My first Smart was a Passion that I purchased secondhand at 18 months old. I ran it for about a year and a half, thoroughly enjoying its somewhat quirky nature, before selling it to an acquaintance. He ran the car for the next five years as virtually a daily driver. Apart from regular servicing, he didn’t have to spend a penny on that car, it never let him down and he was over the moon with it! I purchased my current 2001 Smart Pulse quite by chance. Its owner was Steve Wright who worked for Smart at Hertford. One day I casually mentioned to him that I was looking to purchase another Smart, and he replied, “why not buy my car as it’s for sale.” A deal was struck and I settled down to enjoy driving my second Smart. Steve had completed a number of improvements, including having an Evil Twin engine remap, fitting privacy glass, and although the model was a Pulse, it had all of the Passion upgrades. The following summer at the Smart car rally at the Newark Showground, Notts, I took the plunge and purchased a set of Schmidt Revolution alloy wheels, a stainless steel bull bar and a few other goodies. Then I started to amass lots more parts and my ‘Modification’ mode really set in. Then I mentioned to a friend ‘Steph Newington’ who is an airbrush artist living in Jersey, Channel Islands, that it would be great to customise the car with some airbrush artwork and he said he’d always wanted to airbrush a car and thus a plan was hatched!

www.thesmartclub.com

The theme was a mixture of dolphins, orcas, eyes and alien skin on the bonnet and huge faces on the doors portraying a mixture of Freddie Kruger meets Lord of the Rings! The different artwork wasn’t necessarily meant to all gel together, but merely to portray a dramatic artistic statement, with an element of fantasy. Prior to airbrushing, the panels were first flatted down and then sprayed with a plastic primer. This was then followed by a white basecoat using Ixell paint from the Renault range. This preparation work was undertaken by Paul Miere, one of Jersey’s top automotive bodywork specialists. Steph then airbrushed the various designs in his studio at St Mary. He first applies a base sketch on the panels using a soft pencil. Followed by building up the picture using Iwata VX505 and RG-2 airbrush guns. For very fine detail he uses an Iwata Custom Micron C gun. Golden airbrush paints are used which are water based acrylics. Loose masks are used to prevent overspray, but most of the work is all freehand. Once the paint has been left to dry and harden, the panels were then taken to Paul Miere to be sprayed with three coats of lacquer and flatted down between coats, followed by polishing to leave a glass like finish. The lacquer not only protects the paint, but also gives it more depth. There’s a huge amount of work involved with the preparation, airbrushing, lacquering and final polishing of the panels. Lots more interior and exterior modifications on

the car were to follow, including fitting a stainless steel centre exiting exhaust system with latticework style rear valance.

Not wishing to skimp on any other aspects of the car’s revamp, I bit the bullet and had a complete interior retrim using a mixture of Grey Nappa and Indigo blue leather, with quilting on the squabs and backs of the seats, inspired by the Bentley Continental GT. These two colours are relatively neutral and perfectly complement the more vibrant colours of the artwork on the body. This trimming was completed by Dean at HRS Trimmers at Broxbourne, Herts, and this has really transformed the interior from a rather drab and dull grey cloth to something really special. I had deliberated about having a leather trimmed interior for many years, and wish I’d done it sooner, it was money well spent and incredibly pleasing, not to mention very comfortable and tactile too.

Quite an expensive undertaking, but very pleasing to the eye, as the mirror finish shine of the system can be clearly seen through the valance. The resulting ‘rorty’ exhaust note is quite novel too, but without being too obtrusive. The car won Best Modified (Exterior) at Destination Brooklands at Mercedes-Benz World in 2007, followed by winning Most Modified in 2008. For 2009 I wanted to revamp the artwork and so I sent more panels over to Steph in Jersey, and he masterminded the current guise of Ocean Glamour Fantasy. The doors now portray a mixture of a mermaid and female portrait, a female clad in red PVC sitting in the water on a beach, while the bonnet has a portrait of another female. The larger the image, the more dramatic it looks on the car. We kept the dolphins and orcas on the wings, but replaced the rear lower panel for one depicting a ghosted image of a shipwreck and it has blended in very well with the back panel.

To complete the interior I purchased a Momo EVO Millennium leather trimmed steering wheel, and fitted Brabus stainless steel foot pedal covers, a silver dash décor kit, and changed the wood trim kit from walnut to that of Ebony. While I still liked the Schmidt Revolution wheels, I still hankered after making my car even more unique and thus purchased a set of Image X-Dream split-rim ultra light weight alloys that have been chromed. I’m informed that they are the sole set made in 7.5x16 and 8x16 to fit a Smart. In 2009 at the Smart Festival at MercedesWorld, Brooklands, Surrey, I was delighted to receive Runner-up award in the Most Modified Class.

Modifying my Smart Pulse over the years has been huge fun, the thrill of the chase in acquiring more parts via Ebay or specialist suppliers has been very much part and parcel of it all! Once you get started, the ball is well and truly rolling and it does become quite addictive. Although I’ve completed just about as many modifications to the car as possible, further engine and suspension tuning excepted, I still derive great pleasure from driving it, quirks and all!

The French President Mr Nicolas Sarkozy Regular readers of ‘4site’ may recall that we carried an article in Issue 13 (November 2009) covering Mr Nicolas Sarkozy’s visit to the smart premises in Hambach. Following that article and subsequent communications, thesmartclub was delighted to receive a letter from the Chief of the Cabinet for the President!

There’s very little left to modify now, other than the artwork on the body, so for 2010 I’ve got new doors and bonnet with different designs, but still reflecting the Ocean Glamour Fantasy theme, just as vibrant and dramatic, and perhaps even more so!

Special thanks to Steph Newington, Paul Miere at the Bel Royal Bodyshop, Jersey, Dean at HRS Trimmers, Scott and Brett Brocklehurst at Custom Exotics, Harlow, Essex, the many specialist suppliers and particularly Denis Williams of Smart Parts Direct and Andrew Shipp at Sussex Cars Ltd. Paul & Steph’s - Ocean Glamour Fantasy Owner: Paul N.S. Bussey (Classic Car Journalist & Photographer) Airbrush artwork by Steph Newington, St Mary, Jersey, C.I.

In the letter, Mr Sarkozy advises that he is proud to feel part of the smart enthusiasts community and he congratulates thesmartclub on its success. Our thanks also to Cédric Goubet at the French Chief Cabinet Office for his best wishes.

Features Ferrina - The Next Decade... Since my last project smart car, the 1275cc MG Metro/Fortwo, I had been without a smart for about a year and I was getting anxious for another one. Having sold the Fortwo after the 2008 smart Festival at Brooklands, and especially after some funny looks arriving in my Toyota MR2 Roadster at the 2009 smart Festival, things had to change! So after the festival, I discovered www.forfourowner.com and have been chatting to a few people I know about a Forfour. After scouring the internet for a cdi, I got my list down to just four in the country, which were the right price and spec. I’d seen a red and silver one in Plymouth which stood out from the rest, but it was too far away to view! So I had a look at two near to me in Essex and was let down by the lack of sales advice and the cars actual condition and presentation. None of the smart main dealers local to me had any diesels, although they tried very hard to find some. I nearly threw in the towel and nearly ordered a Fortwo cdi instead!

But I finally made the decision to do the 500 mile round trip to see the one in Plymouth. I called the dealership, got a good price for my Renault and we had a deal. We went there and back in a day and after a great test drive, I bought it! We couldn’t drive it home though because the dealer hadn’t sorted out the road tax!! So it was a little frustrating, but a few days later, there it was on my drive, my fifth smart car in ten years, in the form of a Forfour cdi and I was really chuffed. I’ve now owned all three of the main smart models, Fortwo, Roadster and now Forfour. I also wanted a car that was a manual, good on fuel and had a bit of pulling power. The 1.5L three cylinder 95bhp diesel ticked all the boxes and it has that classic smart engine sound!

www.thesmartclub.com

The car is a Passion spec cdi, in the same ‘Ferrina’ livery as my old 2003 LHD Roadster! It’s got the 16” four spoke alloys, black cloth interior, glass roof and rare dash pods. In the first week I had lined up a few modifications like some LED front side lights, an iPod lead and an ITG foam air filter element. The brake discs were worn and scored so I got a full set of front and rear discs, ready to fit after the winter. I also sourced a Brabus rear exhaust box and fitted that which really made the rear of the car look more purposeful.

More recently, I have added two more LED bulbs for the reverse and fog lights, an alloy Richbrook ‘touring’ gear knob and lowered the suspension by 30mm with the Spax sport coil spring kit. The latest upgrades are a rear diffuser from a Lotus Exige and a the old rear box is back on, but has been modified to take my ‘Ferrina’ 76mm (3”) stainless tailpipe. One thing I have done is fully document the fuel economy from day one of ownership. Although I have modified my car to look and drive better, I am a big eco-warrior and have tried to reduce the short journeys I make and have driven economically where possible to reduce my carbon footprint. Currently, the car is returning a true average of 48.3mpg, but the recent cold spell has knocked it right down to the low 40’s. I’m trying to get closer! I love driving my Forfour. It’s a smooth and quiet cruiser on the motorway and there aren’t any interior rattles in the cabin. It handles very well and sits poised on the road with its fat tyres and chunky arches. The Forfour is dead! Long live the Forfour! My videos: www.youtube.com/6f00t4tv Submitted by Neil Stanley

What if water does get in the SAM?

Mods & Maintenance!

It is probably worth understanding what the symptoms can be attributed to a soggy SAM first. The following are just some examples from cases we have heard:

Roadster SAM Unit Supplied by: www.FQ101.co.uk What is it?

• • •

The SAM unit (the Signal Acquisition / Activation Module) is a core component to all smart and modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles. It is the main electrical centre that was installed in all smart models from 2003 onwards. The unit comprises fuses, relays and a microprocessor module for managing all the car’s functions. The SAM does not control the running of the engine but communicates with the Engine Control Unit and other components to form a complete operational system.

• • • • • •

Random horn operation Random hazard light operation Flickering heated seats, aircon and rear window button lights Constant radiator / intercooler fan Stuttering soft top operation Strange symbols in the dash display Single line bar in the gear display Regular blowing fuses Complete failure of car electronics

How does water actually get in the SAM? Generally, the SAM unit will operate without any intervention for many years. This is certainly the case for the fortwo for which even a blown fuse is a rare occurrence. However, the Roadster SAM has always been vulnerable from a notorious leak through the bulkhead around the wiper motor tray.

As water runs down the cables it reaches the cable connectors that plug into the back of the SAM. Here, water collects and starts to short circuit the pins within the connector. This is exacerbated by the close proximity of many cables and connectors as you can see:

So how can you tell if there might be a problem? Well, prevention is always better than the cure! The SAM unit is located within the driver-side foot well just above the pedals.

Short circuiting of contacts can cause a fuse to fail or simulate operation of console switches. Neither of these nuisances are fatal for the SAM. On a test unit, we stripped the unit back to the internal PCB to see exactly what the SAM consists of. Believe it or not, it is very simple...in principle!

The front face contains the easily accessible fuses with all the cable connections on the top side. It is these wires that any leaks will use as a destructive path to the SAM. As a preventative check, it is always worth regularly feeling behind the SAM for any obvious damp.

www.thesmartclub.com

The PCB in the following picture is orientated how it would be mounted in the car with the connectors facing up. As you can see, the majority of the unit is taken up with simple relays and fuse carriers joined together with copper track. However, attached to the relay board is a microprocessor board that sits lower than the rest:

Page 19

thesmartclub ltd … a decade of dedication. 2000 to 2010

Failure to disconnect the battery may cause engine error codes to beguile your car’s electronic systems. Disconnecting the battery simply puts the car under a general anaesthetic! The SAM is held in place by two clips. The first is located at the lower end which needs to pulled back allowing the SAM to lower.

If the microprocessor board becomes saturated in water, the voltage regulars are bypassed and full battery voltage will be applied across sensitive components. This is fatal for the SAM. Ouch, that sounds expensive. Is it? Yes. The exact cost of the part varies but coupled to that is the labour cost. When a SAM is replaced, it contains base software that needs to be taught. All of the car’s features such as paddle shift, cruise control, key synchronisation etc., need to be reprogrammed by a dealer or smart specialist before you can drive away. All in all, the total bill is likely to be over £1000.

The top end now needs to be firmly pushed upwards allowing the hinge to unclip.

I’m getting strange SAM behaviour. Is there a cure? Just because some of the electronics are behaving erratically doesn’t necessarily mean that the SAM needs replacing but you need to be quick! If water is simply shorting some circuits then the microprocessor board hasn’t been attacked just yet. If you are keen to save the SAM then it is a good idea to remove it from the car and dry it out in a warm place such as an airing cupboard. In order to do this, you must disconnect the battery starting with the ground terminal first:

With the SAM lowered, you can start to reach behind and disconnect all 10 connectors.

All connectors have a tab which needs to be pressed before they unplug from the SAM. There are also two connectors which are

www.thesmartclub.com

Page 20

thesmartclub ltd … a decade of dedication. 2000 to 2010

secured with an additional retaining clip. These connectors plug into the PCB and carry various computer network signals to other components in the car amongst other things. The final stage is to free the main supply cable with a 10mm socket:

Smart Community

my-smart.com Coinciding with the smart times 2009 event, smart launched a new international Online smart Community at www.my-smart.com. The simple Registration process is free (and multi lingual) and provides the opportunity to create and upload your own Profile, smart story and images. Whilst also allowing you to network with other smart minded enthusiasts from around the world, it is the primary focal point for current and future smart times events.

The SAM will now be free to take out of the car and dried out. Do not be tempted to remove the casing as you risk causing damage from electrostatic discharge. If the unit is very damp, you may consider taking all the fuses out to increase airflow.

With the SAM removed, you can now investigate the cause of the water ingress. Ensure that the SAM has fully dried out as well. Do not be tempted to leave your SAM out of the car for days. The microprocessor board contains a slow drain capacitor which is enough to power all the memory chips and retain car specific information. The longer you leave the unit out of the car, the more risk there is of losing functions. Should this happen, you can easily get them reprogrammed at a dealer. The cost of this will be a small price to pay compared to a new SAM unit.

Videos of the 2009 Event are available for download and the site will also publicise dates and details for the 2010 European Festival.

Dealership News smart of York Northside Trucks have purchased a fleet of 10 smart cars from smart of York to run as courtesy vehicles – its customers swapping their usual Mercedes-Benz trucks or vans for the diminutive two-seaters.

Returning a staggering 83.1 miles per gallon (combined cycle) and emitting just 89g/km of CO2, which means the smart cars are road tax exempt, the new fleet offers many more benefits over the Vauxhalls that they replace as Finance Director James Hemingway explained. “Whilst the low running costs and fuel return were major considerations, another factor was the opportunity to use the smarts as a very affordable means of advertising by having them signwritten with our website and freephone number,” he said. “The cars are being used by our customers whilst their own vehicles are being maintained in our workshops and initial feedback has been very good.” Nick Lawn, Corporate Sales Manager for Mercedes-Benz and smart North Yorkshire, said that smart was one vehicle brand that was continuing to enjoy success in the uncertain economic climate. He expected the recent launch of the 2010 model to enhance its appeal.

smart USA is pleased with the successful launch of the car2go car share program in Austin, Texas.

News from smart Smart USA The new year brought a change of leadership at smart USA. Jill Lajdziak has joined the smart USA team as the company’s new President.

The pilot phase of the program launched in November 2009 with 200 vehicles available to City of Austin employees. car2go allows users to access a smart fortwo 24/7, by renting by the minute, hour or day. A unique aspect of the program allows users to take one-way trips.

In this role, Lajdziak will assume day to day operations for the smart brand in the United States (U.S.). Lajdziak has over 30 years, most recently with Saturn, of progressive automotive leadership experience, including expertise in brand development.

At the conclusion of the rental, vehicles may be left in accessible parking areas within a specified area of Austin. The program is expected to open to the public later this year. The North American pilot project followed a successful program launch in Ulm, Germany. smart continues its commitment to the environment with the introduction of the smart fortwo electric drive to the U.S. market.

smart USA announced the launch of its first national lease incentive program through Daimler Financial Services, offering the unique vehicle at a competitive price.

The brand is on target to provide the smart electric drive in select markets in the U.S. in the fourth quarter 2010. The U.S. is one of five countries selling the smart fortwos this year after a successful pilot program in London, England.

The strength of the smart brand in the United States allows smart USA to offer customers additional financing offers. With nearly 40,000 vehicles on U.S. roads in just over two years and a high residual value, the smart fortwo has proven it is right at home in the U.S.

2010 is certain to be an exciting year in the U.S., as smart USA turns its focus to experiential marketing, which was a cornerstone of the brand launch in 2007.

The lease program allows customers added flexibility with financing options and allows smart customers to enjoy leasing benefits such as low monthly payments, driving a new vehicle every two-to-three years and hassle-free vehicle turnins. The lease program will allow the smart fortwo to remain competitive in the U.S. market.

www.thesmartclub.com

The best way to appreciate and understand the smart fortwo is to get behind the wheel and take a drive. A laser focus on marketing initiatives, the continued growth of car2go and the launch of the electric drive will all work to grow the brand throughout the year. Submitted by smart USA

smart fortwo edition greystyle Stuttgart – 9th February 2010

News from smart International Brand Campaign Stuttgart – 12th February 2010 Surprisingly different time and again: on 16 February 2010 smart is starting a new international brand campaign and bringing fleeing "Hot Dogs", a filling station attendant and further surprising stories to cinema, TV and computer screens. The ten second spots each show a film excerpt that arouses interest and makes viewers curious to find out more. Accordingly, they end with the question that everyone asks: "What happened?" The microsite www.the-smart-class.com – the central element of the whole campaign – provides the answer. The long version of all films is shown in this web special. "Our new brand campaign demonstrates the features of the smart fortwo in an entertaining and typical smart tongue-in-cheek manner. All viewers will enjoy it and it is an ideal combination of classic and new media", says Marc Langenbrinck, Managing Director smart brand and Head of Sales & Marketing smart. At www.the-smart-class.com internet users can discover the features of the smart fortwo in an interactive way – from its compact exterior, economy and environmental compatibility to its surprisingly large interior. Each film presents one of the typical features of the smart fortwo in a bizarre and amusing way. The campaign is starting with two films and a further four will follow in the course of the year. At www.the-smart-class.com interested viewers will find the answer and the whole story behind the short off-beat clips. The protagonists in the films are part of an international, 3D animated city on the internet and invite viewers to find out more about smart. In addition, the web special gives those interested an opportunity to register for a test drive, order brochures and download wallpaper. The brand campaign was jointly developed and implemented by smart together with four national organisations (Germany, France, Italy and UK) and their BBDO agencies. smart has once again succeeded in realising a consistent international brand profile whilst considering the needs of its main markets. The films were shot in Los Angeles in December 2009.

The smart brand is continuing its series of exciting special models with the smart fortwo edition greystyle. Striking and yet stylish accents lend the new spring edition 2010 from smart a modern and dynamic appearance. The interior boasts an expressive look thanks to sporty contrasts and fine materials with a first class fit and finish.

The smart fortwo edition greystyle is available as a coupé or a cabrio with a 52 kW (71 hp) engine with micro hybrid drive technology or a 62 kW (84 hp) engine.

The lifestyle brand smart stands for unconventional thinking, environmentally friendly technology, joie de vivre and a discerning sense of style. The new edition model reveals its ambitions at first glance. It features an exclusive matt grey finish combined with a black tridion cell as standard. 15 inch alloy wheels with six spokes are also

exclusive to the special model, as are yellow mirror caps that bear the edition lettering and provide a dynamic contrast. Fog lights underline the sporty character and complement the distinctive exterior look. The interior also boasts sporty esprit and a discerning style. An exclusive combination of fabric and leather with yellow accents and trim parts gleaming in yellow and matt chrome determine the ambience. The yellow accent colour is also found in the double stitching of the top quality nappa leather seats – the same leather used in premium Mercedes-Benz models. The gear knob and the three-spoke sports steering wheel, with steering wheel gearshift and yellow stitching, are also covered with leather. They are exclusive to the special spring edition of the smart fortwo and subtly emphasise its sportiness. The doors, kneepad and dashboard have a leather effect.

Record low emissions of 86 grams of CO2 per kilometre Sindelfingen, 5th February, 2010 The smart fortwo cdi is maintaining its top position among the most environmentally friendly cars with a combustion engine. The smart fortwo cdi now emits just 86 g/km of CO2 – less than all its competitors. A high level of environmental friendliness is an innate characteristic of the successful smart fortwo cult car. The diesel model - the smart fortwo cdi - always underlined this claim with carbon dioxide emissions of just 88 grams per kilometre, the lowest figure worldwide for cars with a combustion engine. Now the smart fortwo is setting a new record with emissions of just 86 g/km or consumption of 3.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres in the manual “softip” mode.

The standard equipment moreover includes exclusive floor mats featuring the edition logo and the MP3-compatible CD radio smart radio 9. Electric power steering, heated seats, a lockable glove compartment and the smart sound system with MP3 interface are optionally available. Among other features the passion equipment line comes with the softouch automatic gear programme, electric windows, air conditioning with automatic temperature control, and a panoramic roof with sunblind. The new special model also demonstrates the smart fortwo style when it comes to environmental friendliness. Not only does it fulfil the strict exhaust gas standard EU 5, the 52 kW variant is moreover fitted with micro hybrid drive (mhd) technology as standard. This clever and comfortable automatic start/stop system shuts down the engine as soon as the driver brakes and the vehicle's speed falls below 8 km/h – for example when approaching traffic lights. The engine starts again in the fraction of a second when the driver releases the brake pedal. The system is fully automatic – the driver does not need to do anything. In urban traffic with frequent stop and go situations, mhd enables fuel savings of almost 20 percent. The special model smart fortwo edition greystyle is on sale from a price of €16,135 (German list price incl. VAT)

www.thesmartclub.com

The measures included an improvement in the vehicle’s aerodynamics. A reduction in ride height by seven millimetres, for example, resulted in improved rolling resistance characteristics. Marc Langenbrinck, Managing Director of the smart brand, says: "We continue to work hard to make our smart models even more environmentally friendly. The smart fortwo cdi the past and the present CO2 champion - is proof of this. And the next level of sustainable drives is ready to go: the smart fortwo electric drive has already been proving itself in everyday use in London for three years. Series production of 1000 vehicles started in November 2009. From 2012 the dream of motoring with no local emissions will become a reality for everyone. Lots of people are talking about electric drive but we already have it on the road. This confirms smart's role as a trendsetter - ten years ago as the first true city car and now among electric vehicles. With its fleet smart has an excellent position with regard to corporate average CO2 emissions."

Handover of first smart fortwo electric drives to customers Berlin, 17th December, 2009

News from Monaco

The handover of the first smart fortwo electric drives to customers, together with the official launch of the RWE electricity charging infrastructure, introduces the next stage of electric mobility. Customer-friendly electric mobility is enabled by "e-mobility Berlin". From public charging stations to RWE's home charging stations - loading and paying for green electricity is now as easy as using a mobile phone. An intelligent charging management enabling a direct data exchange between the vehicle and the charging station forms the foundation for this. Customers receive a complete package containing the smart fortwo electric drive with intelligent charging management and a full service contract, an intelligent and fast RWE home charging station and free green electricity for the first 18 months. "e-mobility Berlin" makes electric mobility convenient, safe and manageable for every customer. In line with a full service rental model the vehicles will be passed on to selected fleet, business and private customers.

smart fortwo electric drive on the roads of Monaco as of 2010 December 2009 A few weeks after the production of the smart fortwo electric drive started at the plant in Hambach, smart signed an agreement with the Principality of Monaco, in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Albert II. From next spring, the first electric smarts will be run on the roads of Monaco.

The ten smart fortwo electric drive cars will be exclusively used by state services (such as postal and telecommunications services) or Monacan public service partner companies, which are already very engaged in the field of zero-emission mobility. “We are very proud that the Principality of Monaco as one pioneer in sustainability projects decided to count on/partner with the pioneer of zero emission mobility – the smart fortwo electric drive,” stated Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"Our pioneering mobility concept offers an integrated solution which combines electric cars that are absolutely suitable for everyday use with an adjusted charging infrastructure. The smart fortwo electric drive is worldwide the first electric vehicle equipped with an intelligent charging management and the latest lithium-ion technology. It combines driving pleasure with an emission-free range of 135 kilometers – more than enough for daily use in urban areas. From today this sustainable and customer-friendly electric automobile will be an integral part of Berlin’s street picture", says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Daimler CEO and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

www.thesmartclub.com

“We need engaged partners like this in order to make emission free driving become reality.” Mercedes-Benz France Chairman Reinhard Lyhs: “Through this partnership, the smart fortwo electric drive is confirming its pioneering role in electric mobility. For us, the interest shown by the Principality of Monaco - itself a pioneer in zero-emission mobility - in the electric smart, is a powerful argument in favour of the concept and technologies of our electric model.”

News from smart smart fortwo conquers the Arctic Toronto, 9th February, 2010 After covering more than 7700 kilometres on some of the most scenic, remote and challenging roads in Canada, the smart Winter Expedition concluded over the weekend. The expedition began on 26th January, in Kelowna, British Columbia, and throughout the course of two weeks, 46 participants over three waves made their way up and down the west coast, through the Yukon and all the way to Inuvik, N.T (68° 22' North Latitude) before ultimately completing their journey on 6th February at the smart Centre in North Vancouver.

The rear-engine, rear drive smart fortwo has a balanced chassis and excellent weight distribution that allows it to perform very well in snow and icy conditions.

From the changing elevations on the Coquihalla and Alaska Highways to the notoriously challenging Dempster Highway and everything in between, the smart fortwo performed very well throughout the entire expedition and proved that the difficult conditions could be surmounted by the vehicle’s intelligent design.

“The smart winter Expedition was planned to demonstrate what our 16,000 + loyal customers already know; the smart fortwo is a safe, comfortable and extremely versatile vehicle regardless of the prevailing climatic conditions, varying terrains or distances travelled,” said Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada. "The compact smart fortwo offers class leading fuel efficiency, low emissions and the highest levels of safety and technology in its category, which serves both the driver and passenger well whether they are navigating congested urban streets, suburban areas or even travelling on remote stretches of highway north of the Arctic Circle in the middle of winter."

The caravan of smart fortwos remained poised and easily navigated the ice covered roads, changing elevations, blowing snowdrifts, poor visibility and strong crosswinds they encountered throughout the 12-day program. The smart fortwo’s myriad of standard active and passive safety systems including Electronic Stability Program (esp®), traction control, cornering brake control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution and brake assist always kept drivers safely in control despite the extreme conditions. In addition, steering wheel, shift paddles, which are standard on the passion model, allowed for easy downshifting to effortlessly climb steep mountain inclines or reduce speed in advance of sharp, slippery corners.
