Events – Review & Preview S2 smarts Grand Opening and Dyno Day Sunday 30th January, 2011 Watford, UK It was a crisp, and at times, sunny winter’s day that welcomed the gaggle of smart devotees to Rob Baker’s (S2Eagleye from the old S2Crew Days) official launch of his new facilities.

Refreshments & light bites were on offer from the start in the nice warm reception area with the burger van outside, which was up and running soon after eight am, providing complimentary burgers and bacon sarnies to all who attended, which saw just over one hundred cars throughout the day. Sichang was quick to hand out complimentary vouchers to all.

The cars there included all the smart variants since being officially launched back in 2003 in the UK, plus a few grey imports/left hookers which in total spanned more than a decade of the smart marque. There were race prepared cars that included a Lotus Europa with a Brabus 101 engine (very nice) displayed next to a stunning scissor door Roadster and two new race prepared 451’s. Inside one area of the workshop, was the Ferrari themed Crossblade (build 025) which was very tastefully presented and of course Rob’s 2000 red city coupe with its modified 800cc unit with just a few modifications which is planned to

www.thesmartclub.com

There was plenty of interest in the dyno facility run by Tony, Tune4Performance, who also carries out chip tuning and remapping; having the rolling road in house at S2Smarts, means cars can be tested to see if they are up to scratch before tuning. It was not long before a new Cdi was on the rollers followed by more smarts wanting to know their output figures, from the standard to the modified, non tuned cars running standard power but some of the tuned cars left the owners a bit disappointed, leading to the usual debates.

One car in particular, a ForFour Brabus, showed the diagnostic side of the rolling road, it gave poor figures but after several logged runs, Tony isolated the problem to be a boost leak from the aftermarket dump valve, after removal the car was back to normal power. Everywhere people were talking in small groups with the reception area bustling (well it was not that warm outside and each car

seemed to have its admirers. I think I spent too much time photographing the cars to actually talk to people. I have visited a lot of official & unofficial smart concerns; from Tony Pang’s Top 1 International in London over a decade ago (the ancestral home of the S2Crew). With Smart Chiswick opening to Smarts due to the sheer number of unofficial imports to the first official smart dealer launches (Birmingham, Manchester etc).

I must say that Rob has the makings of a fine set up; he has the knowledge, the enthusiasm, the tools and the facilities, with over 2,500 sq ft to be a one stop shop for anything smart. He provides standard servicing, bespoke tuning, interior reworking & external modifications to new paint jobs and a collection/delivery service for those who need it – it would seem the customer comes first.

S2Smarts was named after the S2Crew which was a Smart Club formed of enthusiasts that loved their Smarts and certainly loved to modify them to whatever extent they could at the time, and in Robs case still do. S2Crew had a very loyal following, meeting each & every week off the M3 (J4) for a good few years until people migrated out of the UK (Paul & Patrick - the

www.thesmartclub.com

founders) or to other cars. It was a shame that we were slandered as elitist as we were not but certain personalities did give that impression. Rob commented ”… we have years of knowledge ready to advise on any smart car related problems, large or small; as a dedicated team offering total smart car solutions, S2 smarts was set up to fill a need in the market for a truly technical-orientated smart car specialist centre in servicing, repairs, performance upgrade and customising”.

Rob had many guests and we must note SMann who came over from the Netherlands in his beautifully turned out smart (Imro & John Paul), Smartmods / Evilution (Kane & John), Smart Trailers (Allan) & Smarts 4 You Racing (Paul) which certainly looked the ‘biz’.

All-in-all, a great place for those with a smart that needs anything from a standard A, B or C service, an MOT, wheels and tyres to those with deep pockets for individual projects. Best of all if it’s not right for you or the car you won’t get it from Rob, his advice is free and well worth taking or ignore at your peril. Considering the success of the launch, I would expect (and it has been confirmed) that S2Smarts would be opening its doors for another Sunday ‘meet’. So watch this space… Submitted by Will Bartlam (the original smartarse)

of the northern Italian wine producing region finally ending up in Riccione itself.

smart times 2011 Riccione Research In advance of thesmartclub’s journey to Riccione for smart times 2011, we undertook a ‘dry run’ research trip from the UK to Riccione and back. The purpose was not only to verify the hotel accommodation we had selected, but also to check distances, route and help us prepare a suitable Information Pack for our participants on the visit to smart times in August. The route took us from Dover to our first ‘familiar’ over night stop at Victor’s Rodenhof hotel in Saarbrucken, Germany.. A favourite of thesmartclub’s for many years, this hotel provides superb accommodation and quality of service that makes it a pleasure to include on every one of our European Events. From Saarbrucken we then headed south through Germany to Ettal and into the second hotel we had selected on our overnight reconnaissance visit. This was the Ludwigder Bayer Hotel, a superb hotel, full of character and owned by six of the monks who lived and worked in the monastery opposite – a monastery also known for its excellent range of locally produced beers! Then it was off across the Brenner Pass into Italy and the drive south through the valleys

www.thesmartclub.com

We were making this trip in very early January and knew, of course, that it was highly likely the beaches would not be bathed in sun and associated sun worshippers – indeed we were correct and, as soon as we approached the motorway exit for Riccione, we descended into think fog rolling in off the sea – a fog that was due to remain with us during our stay in the city. It did little however to cloud our enthusiasm for the city and the prospect of the smart times event itself. The city, although quiet in January, would normally be buzzing with thousands of tourists arriving to benefit from the immaculate beaches and string of hotels and restaurants – this is in addition to the exclusive Ceccarini street. thesmartclub’s hotel selected for our visit (and the hotel we will be using in August) is ideally located for shopping, the Convention Centre (where the smart times parties will be held) and then, of course, the beach itself – all within a few hundred metres of our hotel. It was a successful few days of research and planning and then it was time to start the return trip back to the UK. Now, whilst the fog finally

Page 7

thesmartclub ltd … since 2000

begun to lift, the temperatures had fallen and heavy snow was predicted for southern Germany for the return leg of our trip. The actual route back to Ettal was reasonably clear with only a slight dusting of snow en route to greet us upon our arrival at the Ludwigder Bayer. We suspected that the weather forecast was perhaps a tad pessimistic and the forecast snow had moved elsewhere. However, that night, a further six inches (** cm) of snow fell on top of the snow already lying.

Although resembling a beautiful but somewhat late scene from the front of a Christmas Card

www.thesmartclub.com

the roads were now becoming impassable but even that always assumed we could get our BRABUS forfour out from under the blanket of snow that had covered the car and car park overnight. We decided that, given the quality of the hotel and the seemingly unlimited range and quantity of beer coming across from the Monastery over the road, there were worse places to be stuck … however we had a schedule to stick to and research to complete so we waited a few hours that morning for the ever efficient German snowploughs to push their way through Ettal and beyond into this ‘festive’ scenery. After just over two hours driving on top of what at times felt like an unpredictable ice rink, we finally descended towards the autobahn on the German/Austrian Border where the snow had all but disappeared and we could again press on at pace north towards Saarbrucken for another overnight halt. It was a round trip of just over 5000km (3000miles) from Edinburgh and back and has ensured that we can provide those lucky individuals who are joining thesmartclub on the trip to smart times 2011 in Riccione with a great route, great hotels and the promise of something very ‘smart filled’ in August 2011.

smart times 2011 - Preview

Get ready for the most amazing smart event and the most exhilarating smart experience yet!

Riccione, Italy – August 2011 smart times continues to be the biggest international smart meeting worldwide. This year, with participants and exhibitors from more than 20 nations, smart times takes place in Riccione, Italy which is the perfect place to combine enjoying life, enjoying smart, enjoying a true community atmosphere and enjoying a holiday. As regular followers of the smart world will know, it has been Austria that has proudly and successfully hosted many previous ‘smart times’ events (you can read reviews in previous issues of ‘4site’ magazine). With a format that has proven so successful, it was an exciting and spectacular announcement in Kaprun, Austria during the 2010 smart times event when the venue for the 2011 was announced as Riccione, Italy. We were left in no doubt that it was sure to be something very, very special …

Riccione is situated on the north east coast of Italy and proudly boasts some superb beach facilities coupled with great night life and exclusive shopping. The Riccione beach area is enormous but beautifully maintained and has some of the best organisation to cater for the thousands of tourists that visit each year. To put this in perspective, there are no less than 136 bathing establishments looking after the beach, 41 lifeguards taking care of tourists’ safety and all in the shade of approximately 3,500 beach umbrellas and tents. And if that was not enough, there are parties, areas dedicated to sports and areas for children. It’s a huge change from the surroundings of Zell am See and one that is sure to hugely appeal to smart owners and enthusiasts. Of course, smart times has grown in size and popularity over the years and is now attended by people from sixteen different nations (as at 2010). As our readers across the world will know, many of these people travel a long way to attend smart times and the idea of sending smart times out on a European tour emerged as a way of meeting these fans half-way! This idea of a ‘European Tour’ coupled with the fact that Zell am See would no longer be available to the event organisers has led to the launch of these changes and a move to Riccione in 2011.

We are delighted to see that this year’s programme is packing even more activities, more fun and more features all set in an outstanding location. So firstly, where exactly is it?

There is no doubt that the spectacle of a smart times event, that also incorporates the suspense and build up to an announcement of where the next year’s event will take place is just one of the many highlights the new format of smart times offers. So, what’s in store in Riccione for the smart times event this year? Well, firstly, let’s say it’s BIG and has the potential to be an amazing social event. For those people living near to Riccione or who wish to take advantage of the summer break,

the great news is that whilst the main event opens on Thursday night (August 4th), there are a wide range of activities and tours available from the Monday 1st August! As the centre of Riccione is a busy old place, the event organisers have arranged the use of ‘The Paddock’, a huge parking and ‘event service’ facility located just as you turn off the main A14/E55 Riccione exit. This ‘Paddock’ area will not only act as the start point for the excursions Monday thru Wednesday but it also offers a great vehicle health check facility after your long drive to the event.

This venue will act as one of the central hubs for both information, displays and (what no good smart times event should be without) .. parties! Better still, for our Members attending the event with thesmartclub, this venue is only a few hundred metres stroll from our hotel! As Thursday evening takes over from the afternoon activities, a beach party has been organised at one of the other key locations just down the road from the Palacongressi, the Piazzale Roma.

Whilst full details of the smart times 2011 Event are available online, an overview of what can be expected is as follows: Monday sees a beautiful tour around the area of Riccione coupled with a tour of the Hinterland and great opportunities for dinner and sight seeing. Tuesday is a tour to the north of Riccione, the national park area and again, great opportunities to socialise and dine. Wednesday it’s off to the Hinterland and over the mountains to sample both stunning scenery and local specialities. For these days, if the activities during the day were not enough, there are cocktails on the beach each night! Then it’s into Thursday, 4th August for the start of the major activities. We expect that a large number of smart enthusiasts will start to arrive in Riccione this day as the major event gets underway. With a number of tours, accreditation and registration taking place during the day, the event introduces another of its key venues, the impressive Congress Centre (the Palacongressi).

Here you can grab a bite to eat, refreshing drink and view the many exhibitor cars and displays lined up next to this central event hub. And if the activities and beach party had not already exhausted you, it’s time to head back to the Palacongressi late that night for a party into the early hours of Friday morning! Friday traditionally sees the bulk of smart times event participants arriving as the day progresses and, whilst a number of attractions and activities take place during the day, Friday evening builds up to the official grand opening ceremony. Let us say that, for anyone even slightly considering whether or not to attend smart times 2011, all one needs to do is attend a smart times opening ceremony and you’ll be ‘hooked’! You have to be there. This year, there are live performances on stage followed by a party through into the early hours of Saturday morning. And then, the weekend – time to detune? Not exactly, the smart times 2011 event is just gathering pace! And so it’s into Saturday for what many see to be a feature day of any smart times event.

www.thesmartclub.com

Regulars to previous smart times events will recall the spectacle of the build up to the ‘corso’ – the drive around a route involving all the attendees to smart times. Yes, it’s already an official record in the Guinness Book of Records following our 2009 ‘corso’ around the Zell am See and Kaprun area. The sight of hundreds and hundreds of smart cars driving together waving and sounding their horns is quite simply incredible – but there’s another aspect that is often less reported; that is the hours of gathering and socialising and comparing of notes and modifications amongst those attending as we await the klaxons sounding the start of the run. What makes smart times special, indeed unique, is not simply the fact that there are hundreds of smart owners and enthusiasts simultaneously gathered in one location … it’s the fact that with multiple countries represented, one has the chance to discuss all manner of things smart as one walks up and down the lines of cars awaiting the start. Language barriers are simply not a barrier. It’s a feeling, a culture and a buzz that whilst hard to describe has to be experienced.

The smart times 2011 parade takes place on the Saturday morning and will cover some of the beautiful roads in and around Riccione before arriving at a lunchtime halt. Whilst the afternoon has a number of activities and attractions across the smart times venue, of course, the party on the Saturday night also features the announcement of the smart time 2012 venue! We can see this ‘announcement’ of forthcoming host countries becoming quite a major attraction at future smart times events. For sure, the Riccione announcement in the castle at Kaprun in 2010 was an audio visual spectacular with some astonishing graphics synchronised to an impressive sound track (see Pages 5 thru 8 of Issue 16 of ‘4site’ magazine for a review). We have no doubt that the 2012 announcement in Riccione will be equally spectacular.

www.thesmartclub.com

And so the Saturday night again pushes into the early hours of Sunday morning with a party hosted in the Palacongressi. Traditionally, Sunday always has a slightly quieter start to the day but with this year’s venue coupling venues such as the Palacongressi and the beach area including the Piazzale Roma it promises to be an equally interesting (whilst relaxing) end to the 2011 smart times event. We believe it’s a great idea to effectively take ‘smart times’ on tour around the countries and the cultural diversities and mix of thousands of smart car owners gathering in one city for a few days is something that must be experienced. August in Riccione will always be busy and, with smart times arriving in town, it’s going to be huge. Accommodation logistics have been greatly assisted by the cooperation of ‘Promhotels’ in Riccione. They provide you with a centralised online information and reservation facility to make your selection and reservation of hotels in and around Riccione simple and straight forward – better still, rather than expect you to know all the details of every hotel, their information page (see below) neatly categorises hotels into key themes namely Wellness, Sports & Fun, Family and Parks. This allows you to not only pick a hotel that is suited to both budget and location but also fits your requirements and lifestyle choices during your stay in Riccione. thesmartclub will be reporting back live from smart times 2011 and this year, the places on our ‘package’ trip to and from the event were fully booked within days of launch. It’s great to see such enthusiasm for people making such a long journey from the UK to Riccione and back but it reflects the enthusiasm for this unique smart event geared towards smart enthusiasts.

You can find more information: • at our web site: www.thesmartclub.com • in the ‘event’ section at www.smart.com • at the smart international facebook page • about all the Hotel information and booking facilities at a dedicated promhotels web site http://mysmart.promhotelsriccione.it/

Our continued thanks to smart, Promhotels and all at Lautstark for their ongoing and absolutely invaluable help.

Mods & Maintenance! Reference guides and Information for your smart fortwo (451 model) Year 2007 on

To remove the bonnet panel from the car completely, use a T25 torx bit to remove the strap retaining bolt. Then remove the bonnet from the holders.

Front Panel removal As ever we are grateful to the team at FQ101 for the following information.

To remove the front panel you must first remove (1) the bonnet and (2) the sideskirts. (1) The bonnet on the fortwo 451 requires no tools to open, which allows easy access to all the simple service items such as the headlamp clusters, the washer bottle, the engine coolant and the brake fluid. To release the bonnet, locate the two small levers in the front grille. There are recesses for you to reach and pull the levers out towards the outside edge of the car. The top corners of the bonnet have locating tabs – gently pull the bonnet forward to release them.

(2) The sideskirts can be removed with the aid of only a pair of pliers or wire strippers. Using the tool, carefully pull out the pin from the plastic rivets and then pop the remainder of the plastic rivets out.

Then reach under the cat and unclip, by pulling down, the clips from the floor pan.

The bonnet lifts off and then you can use the square mounts on the bonnet and place them in the holders on the car.

You need to ‘untuck’ the front wheel arch lining from behind the skirt and then pull out the back edge of the skirt. There are two clips securing it into the tridion.

Now that you have untucked the front wheel arch lining and unclipped the edge of the skirt, you need to hold the skirt securely and slide the skirt towards the rear of the car by approximately ¾” (20mm).

Front panel removal Now that you have removed the bonnet and side skirts, you are clear to remove the front panels of the car.

The skirt should now be free. When you come to refit the skirt, you have two options. You can line up the white lugs so that they are all horizontal or remove them and place them into the skirt for refit. We found it easier to line them up and leave them in place; this way we knew the depth was correct against the tridion.

First unscrew the aerial and then, open the door and using a T27 Torx bit, remove the securing screw (and then lever out the pin) from the triangle.

Underneath the triangle you need to remove the T25 and T27 screws shown (repeat both sides of the car).

Carefully line up the clips against the slides on the back of the skirt. You can use your knee to give extra support to the skirt (!) and slide it back into place. Clip in the rear and relocate the front wheel arch lining inside the skirt (reverse of removal). Remember to secure the clips to the floor pan too.

With the door still open, remove the single plastic rivet pin using pliers (or similar).

As you have already removed the sideskirts, you can now gain access to the lower Torx screw. So, you can now remove the single T25 torx screw at the base of the panel normally covered by the sideskirt.

Lift the panel and unclip from the small ‘+’ locating lugs.

Next, close the door and this should now free up the panel for it to be pulled out.

Unplug the indicators from the lenses and the foglights (if fitted).

Underneath the front spoiler are two clips which attach the panel to the undertray. Reach under and unclip them.

. Now the entire front panel can be removed.

Remove the four remaining T25 torx bits. Two are shown here and the same on the opposite side.

1.8 million Hamburg residents th 300 smart fortwo Hamburg: 6 April 2011 Following the successful launch of car2go in Ulm in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and in the Texan capital of Austin, Hamburg is the first city to see the roll out of car2go in the course of the international market launch. 300 “car2go edition” smart fortwos will initially take to the streets. Further expansion of the fleet is possible depending on the development of demand. The same applies to the operating area which will initially be limited to an enlarged approximately 65 square kilometres inner city area of the central Hamburg metropolitan area. This roughly corresponds to Hamburg's "Ring 2" and comprises the popular residential districts around the Alster such as Eppendorf, Winterhude, Uhlenhorst and Rotherbaum, inner city districts including St. Pauli, Neustadt and Sternschanze and parts of Eimsbüttel and Altona. This area is particularly suitable for car2go on account of the population density and the expected demand for individual mobility. The smart fortwo deployed make optimum use of the parking space available.

saw a stream of interested customers right from the start. Nastasja Hebestriet, Managing Director of the joint venture company enthusiastically reports "Even before it was possible to rent a car considerably more than 1,000 Hamburg citizens registered for car2go." Those interested can register at either the car2go shop or at six Europcar offices in Hamburg.

Using synergies The shareholders in the joint venture company that was founded are the Daimler subsidiary car2go GmbH and the Hamburg-based Europcar Autovermietung GmbH, which holds a majority share of 75 percent. The co-operation offers both partners numerous advantages. For example, car2go can benefit from Europcar's extensive expertise in fleet management and logistics and can also use the partner's wide network of offices to offer customers further points where they can register and obtain advice in addition to the dedicated car2go shop.

Robert Henrich, Managing Director of car2go GmbH says "car2go is characterised by its unique flexibility and opportunity to use the vehicles spontaneously, making it ideal in combination with local public transport. After piloting the scheme in Ulm and Austin, Hamburg is the first city where we are launching this new environmentally friendly form of urban mobility on the market and here, too, we will demonstrate that a system like car2go can be financially successful in a large city." Roland Keppler, Chairman of the Management Board of Europcar Autovermietung GmbH says "car2go and Europcar provide the citizens of Hamburg with comprehensive mobility options for every requirement. car2go covers flexible individual urban mobility and Europcar offers vehicles for travelling longer distances with a fleet ranging from small cars to cabriolets and vans."

The citizens of Hamburg have already shown huge interest in the smart revolution. On 1 March the car2go shop opened at Jungfernstieg and

www.thesmartclub.com

The citizens of Hamburg profit from this combination as car2go customers enjoy numerous benefits at Europcar. For example, the first 15 minutes of a journey to a Europcar branch are free with car2go if the customer has booked a car there, e.g. for a longer trip. In addition, car2go customers receive substantial discounts on the rental fee.

The reinvention of inner city mobility Independence from rental stations, simple access and the straightforward and purely time-based charging for any length of use are the main features of car2go which distinguish this mobility concept from classic car rental and car sharing and are so far unique in this form. Registered customers can access the vehicles spontaneously and without a reservation and at the end of the rental period they simply leave them in any public parking space with an unlimited parking duration, including managed parking spaces or those requiring a parking disc.

As in Ulm and Austin, the new smart fortwo “car2go edition” will take to the streets of Hamburg. The world's first series-produced car sharing car is equipped with an economical petrol engine, an automatic start/stop system, a new generation of telematics and a solar roof. At its heart is a new central control unit with a large touch-sensitive 6.5 inch screen. This also has space for the car key and chip cards – for example for refuelling. The telematic unit is linked to the vehicle electronics, which means that it also controls the immobiliser subject to the rental process. A solar roof is also a standard feature and it supplies power of 100 watts to the telematics as well as continuously charging the car's battery. This allows the alternator to be fully decoupled whilst driving and noticeably reduces the fuel consumption. If the vehicle is parked in the sun the smart's ventilation system is operated by solar power. This can noticeably reduce the temperature inside the car – enhancing comfort and benefiting the environment as the air conditioning does not need to work as hard.

Parking meters and the blue parking disc can be ignored as parking fees are included in the rental fee, determined automatically by car2go Hamburg GmbH and paid to the city. To reduce the time spent searching for a parking space, car2go is additionally providing a total of 116 exclusive specially designated parking spaces in four selected car parks (for example at the main station and Bleichenhof), and at eight Shell filling stations. Use of these parking spaces is also included in the rental fee. This means that not only driving, but also parking is really easy and worry-free for customers. The rental fee in Hamburg will be 29 Cents per minute with a maximum of 14.90 Euro per hour; the cheaper of the two is always automatically charged. This all-inclusive price includes fuel, insurance, kilometres driven, taxes and parking charges. There is a one-off registration fee of 29 Euro. After this customers do not have to pay any kind of deposit, monthly or annual fee but only for the time that they actually use the vehicle. Customers can register at the car2go shop at Jungfernstieg 50, at six Hamburg Europcar offices or via the website www.car2gohamburg.com. However, they must visit the shop or one of the selected Europcar offices to have the car2go seal applied to their driving licence.

www.thesmartclub.com

In Ulm the 500,000th car2go rental has just coincided with the 2-year anniversary of public operation. This figure is expected to be exceeded in Hamburg, first and foremost due to the greater customer density. To date more than 35,000 customers have used the 600 vehicles in the two car2go cities of Ulm and Austin – and due to the high customer demand expansion of the vehicle fleet there started three weeks ago. But that's not a final figure for this year. Robert Henrich says "We will definitely be launching car2go in further cities in Europe and North America in 2011." The next city will be on the American continent, followed by another European country in the second half of 2011.

Stuttgart: 15 March 2011 Always surprisingly different: smart presents an electric two-seater in a glitzy 'disco-ball' look in Berlin. This smart fortwo electric drive is completely covered in reflective glass tiles from the roof to the hub caps and the windows also feature a mirror finish. The one-off model was conceived by the experimental artist formation 'Apparatjik' to be used in a film titled 'Pixel City', realized for their current installation at Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The project is brought to a climax by two very unusual live performances on the 26th and 27th of March.

smart is the official main sponsor in this project by Apparatjik, consisting of world-famous musicians Magne Furuholmen of a-ha, Guy Berryman of Coldplay, Jonas Bjerre of Mew and sought-after music producer Martin Terefe. Their "Apparatjik Light Space Modular" features not only concerts but also an interactive installation which collects data to be turned into a piece of music. The deriving song will be performed by the prestigious Deutsches Kammerorchester and accompanied by a spectacular image show titled 'Apparat TV'. The projections will be streamed out of a six metre tall cube into the city through the museum's glass walls. Inside that cube is where Apparatjik will be performing live on 26th and 27th March. Tickets can be purchased over 01805/88 00 15, via www.apparatjik.com. During their stay in Berlin Apparatjik members Magne Furuholmen and Martin Terefe took the opportunity to discover the German capital in the Discoball smart. Impressions of their trip are documented in a smart filmlet which can be seen over the smart Youtube channel www.youtube.com/smart

Amsterdam - car2go today announced to bring its innovative mobility program to Amsterdam before end of 2011 and decided to run one of the world’s first large scale carsharing fleets of pure electric vehicles there with 300 smart fortwo cars. “The future of mobility has arrived. The smart fortwo electric drive has already been delivered to our customers in 18 markets worldwide. And car2go, our innovative mobility concept, has proven to be a success in Germany and in the U.S.” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We will next set a new benchmark for sustainable individual mobility by bringing these two intelligent concepts together.” The car2go program is already very successful in Ulm/Germany and Austin/Texas with a total of more than 35.000 members. In Hamburg, the car2go program was made available to the public with 300 vehicles last week. The electric car2go program is going to start operations in Amsterdam before end of 2011 with 300 smart fortwo electric drive vehicles. All cars will be equipped with latest telematics technology, allowing fully automated, easy and convenient rental operations. It allows customers to rent the cars spontaneously with having the burden to commit to a specific return time or location. “We are delighted that car2go has opted for Amsterdam as one of the first cities in the world to start this electric car sharing project”, says Eric Wiebes, alderman for traffic, transportation and air quality of the city of Amsterdam. “It fits perfectly into Amsterdam’s strive for improving the air quality in the city. This project brings electric car sharing a significant step closer to a major audience. As car sharing vehicles are completing many kilometres within the city, electrification of such vehicles in particular has a positive effect.” Amsterdam is known world-wide for its openness to new technologies and businesses. Around 300 electric charging stations are expected to be installed by end of 2011 for public use, increasing to 1,000 by end of 2012. “As from the very beginning, our smart fortwo has been invented as the ideal car for individual mobility in dense urban areas,” says Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart. “The smart fortwo electric drive

has been tailored to shape the future of urban mobility, combining environmentally responsible driving with a lot of fun and perfect functionality. smart is much more than just a small car – it is a big idea for metropolitan areas and now for the wonderful city of Amsterdam - Proficiat!“ “car2go is designed to meet the growth and diversity of mobility needs in dense urban areas while protecting environment and quality of life” says Robert Henrich, CEO of car2go GmbH, “Amsterdam’s strong focus on implementing and fostering green technologies, such as an extensive electric infrastructure and its citizens’ open-minded lifestyle, makes it the perfect place to launch an electric car2go program.

Amsterdam has an efficient public transit network as well as various bike and car sharing schemes which are well accepted by its citizens. “car2go is aiming to complement the existing transport systems by providing a service for short and spontaneous one-way trips. We see ourselves not as a competition to other means of transport, but as another puzzle piece in the mix of Amsterdam’s different means of urban transportation” says Henrich. car2go is planning to establish a subsidiary in the Netherlands in order to bring the service to Amsterdam. Further details of the service such as business area, parking/charging concept and start of customer registrations will be discussed in the course of the coming months based on a memorandum of understanding with the City of Amsterdam signed today.

Los Angeles: 9 Mar 2011 Twenty smart fortwo electric drive cars, unveiled today by the Automobile Club of Southern California and smart USA, will be part of a research project by the Auto Club to test the utility and benefits of electric cars in a variety of light duty roadside, insurance and consumer activities. The 20 vehicles are among an overall fleet of 250 smart fortwo electric drive vehicles that will be distributed by smart USA nationwide during 2011. “More and more motorists will be driving alternative fuel vehicles in the coming years, including electric vehicles, and the Auto Club is preparing to serve cars of the future by testing these 20 smart fortwo EVs” said Thomas McKernan, Auto Club CEO. “We’re going to be exploring and reporting the benefits and challenges of driving electric cars, seeing whether they are suitable for day trips and how they work as commuter cars. It will also assist us in establishing roadside services that meet the needs of alternative-fuel and electric vehicles.” “The smart fortwo electric drive fits perfectly in the urban landscape of southern California as the purest statement on conservation and transportation electrification,” said Jill Lajdziak, president of smart USA. “We are thrilled the Auto Club is showing commitment to smart’s electric technology and demonstrating the benefits of the smart fortwo to its members. The Auto Club’s fleet is currently the nation’s largest private fleet of smart fortwo electric drive vehicles.” The smart fortwo EVs will be used by the Auto Club’s roadside assistance, automotive services and insurance claims fleets, the Automotive Research Center, and publications and public affairs groups. Drivers will provide feedback through the program regarding their day-to-day experiences. In addition, editors from Westways, the Auto Club’s travel and lifestyle member magazine, will use a smart fortwo EV for day trips. Results will be reported to the Club’s six million Southern California members through the magazine. Also, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote and learn more about alternative fuels, the Auto Club is sponsoring a hydrogen vehicle fueling station at Cal State LA which will open this spring.

Race Weekends

the 4two cup is a new and dynamic race series starting in May 2011 for one or two drivers. With the aim of producing exciting close racing with smaller budgets in mind, the series will be ideal for the complete novice through to the experienced racer looking for fun or a new challenge.

Optional Friday practice, split in to 2 x 30 minute sessions. Enough drivers need to agree to the practice in advance to make it cost effective. Saturday will be a 35 minute practice session which will be split into 2 x 15 minute sessions allowing for a 5 minute driver change. These times will determine the grid positions for the 2 x 20 minute races.

Other events Throughout the year we will be booking track days, test sessions and possibly some guest events allowing further exposure, fun and socialising.

Costs The Series ‘the 4two cup’ will be run in association with the Britcar for the next 3 years. All the UK rounds will be attended with options for the European rounds. You also have the option of driving both races or splitting the weekend between two drivers.

By keeping the spend throughout the year limited we mange to do two things. Firstly, the 4two cup will keep the racing fair and prove who the best drivers are and secondly introduce new drivers to the sport who may have thought that motor racing was unaffordable.

The car

There will be two classes running in the series, the 125+bhp BRABUS and the 102bhp pulse. Each will be built to there own specification.

On completion, the race car will be registered to you. The car will be eligible for the series for at least three years and will be totally road legal.

A limit will be set for the first year of 20 cars, this will then increase over the coming seasons to two grids of 32 cars split by class. Once this is filled no more cars will be added to the class until one of the drivers decides to leave. Hence keeping a value to you the driver and more importantly the value of the race car.
