It’s great to see the support for our 16th Annual visit to the birthplace of the fortwo, Hambach in France. It’s equally great to see that there are a number of ‘new faces’ on this year’s event supported by some lucky people who are making a return visit – an annual pilgrimage for some too! We’ll have the privilege of not only seeing the latest production processes in action but again have the honour of being guided around the Magna plant where the tridion shells are fabricated prior to transport into the main smart assembly area.

Of course, 2016 also sees smart times take place in Hamburg, Germany and this year we are looking to make a large ‘splash’ with visible and coordinated UK presence not just representing the UK but equally representing the many clubs and local enthusiast groups across the UK. We are gathering the local ‘logos’ for all such groups and these will appear on specially produced polo shirts for use at the event – equal prominence to all groups and a core UK visible theme! Upcoming Event

smart times 2016 - Hamburg

What is it?

The world’s largest gathering of smart owners and enthusiasts – owners travel from across Europe and beyond to meet up and socialise with other owners. Originally organised and hosted by smart Austria, smart times started a European tour in 2011 2011 – Riccione, Italy 2012 – Antwerp, Belgium 2013 – Buochs/Lucerne, Switzerland 2014 – Cascais, Portugal 2015 – Budapest, Hungary At Budapest it was announced that the next smart times would be held in Hamburg, Germany.

When?

26th & 27th August 2016 are the two main days (Friday and Saturday). As in previous years there will be pre events in the week before, where early arrivers meet and go for a drive, or a boat trip etc. So far this year we’ve heard about a beach drive. “We proudly present the first excursion in August 2016: the amazing beach drive. From Blankenese over St. Peter-Ording. Summer, water, open-minded people from all over the world – it’s a one of a kind event that you definitely have to be part of. “

Where?

Großmarkt Hamburg Obst Gemüse und Blumen (Wholesale Market for Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers) Banksstraße 28 20097 Hamburg Germany.

Will thesmartclub be there?

We’ll be there as part of a greater UK representation – we’re hoping to paint the City of Hamburg red white and blue! We’ve got car flags, door mirror covers and more, and will be offering a low cost polo shirt to all UK participants – identifying both you as a proud Brit, and your local club as part of the wider UK smart community. We’ll be advertising these during the summer via our homepage and social media feeds.

What do I have to do?

If you’re going, register at www.smarttimes16.com where you’ll find further information.

How to get there?

Hopefully in your smart! Realistically from the UK it’s a two day drive once into mainland Europe – stopping overnight en-route would be prudent.

News from smart

Virtual test drives with the smart fortwo cabrio Stuttgart. smart is accompanying the market launch of the new smart fortwo cabrio, which will arrive in showrooms on 10 March 2016, with a comprehensive campaign across all communication channels focusing on the central creative theme of “Open for anything!”. Virtual and digital activities in particular are to be implemented for the particularly iconic model of the new smart generation. One highlight is the “Virtual Test Drive Experience”. Between 18 February and the end of March 2016, this will offer prospects in various major European cities an opportunity to experience the merits of the open-top city runabout on a virtual journey of discovery. Along with the Virtual Test Drive, the entire campaign will be extended into the digital world by a campaign under the banner “The Most Open Test Drive”, thereby arousing attention on social networks, too. The campaign is to be rounded off in classic media by a TV spot and three print motifs.

“The accompanying campaign is as open-top as the new smart fortwo cabrio, as it makes the feeling of driving a cabriolet most noticeable in a very special way. Virtual test drives show enable the prospects to experience the benefits of summer, sunshine, joie de vivre in the smart fortwo cabrio anytime and everywhere in an amazingly realistic and intensive way”, explains Dr Annette Winkler, Head of smart. In the “Virtual Test Drive Experience”, the test driver dons a pair of virtual reality glasses and is transported in the middle of winter to a summery, urbane setting in the front passenger seat, where surprises and unexpected discoveries await them beyond the real world. A 360-degree film conveys not only the merits of the smart fortwo cabrio, but also the highlights of the city. This turns the virtual test drive with the smart fortwo cabrio into a very special experience. The virtual test drive campaign is to take place both at selected dealers and at three-day events in the major European cities of Berlin, Brussels, London and Zurich. The campaign kicks off today in the LP12 Mall of Berlin at Leipziger Platz. Digital challenge: “The Most Open Test Drive” The smart fortwo cabrio is also leaving its mark on the web, and on social networks in particular, adeptly extending the overarching creative theme of the campaign. A viral film features pairs of people who know each other very well, such as couples, mother and daughter or best friends. They face a very special challenge in the open-top two-seater. The front passengers read out randomly generated questions to the drivers, who are required to answer them openly with a frank “yes” or “no” while on the move. A lie detector on board the smart fortwo cabrio reveals directly whether the question has been answered truthfully. As soon as the drivers are discovered to have told a lie, the cabrio’s soft top is closed and the test drive is ended. The campaign can be seen at www.smart.com/fortwocabrio and on all national and international smart social media channels, such as YouTube or Facebook. Classic communication: freedom at the touch of a button The focus in above-the-line media is also on the liberating feeling of open-top driving. The “First Date” TV commercial (https://youtu.be/NQnpsu1bGfI) relates in humorous style how opening up the smart fortwo cabrio also teases spontaneous, particularly open confessions out of the car’s occupants.

Issue 32 - 2016 - www.thesmartclub.co.uk

In the commercial a young woman, on the first date, spontaneously confesses to her date that she has already planned out their life together. In the commercial “Facebook”, used online (https://youtu.be/sDsxptA5nls), a dad completely unexpectedly admits to his teenage daughter that he has secretly looked at her Facebook profile and knows all of her secrets. While his daughter is nonplussed, it is apparent that the driver feels liberated, and he duly enjoys the journey in the smart fortwo cabrio. Three print motifs with headlines such as “Opening shortly” or “Open-air hero” continue the campaign in supra-regional magazines, daily newspapers and business media, beckoning the coming cabrio season with a modern and fresh look. Under the claim “Open for anything!”, the new smart fortwo cabrio is thus to be presented on all channels as the city car in which the sky’s the limit - and not only in terms of driving fun. The agency K-MB Agentur für Markenkommunikation in Berlin is responsible for the idea behind the “Virtual Test Drive Experience”, for developing the corresponding concept and for implementing the campaign. The central creative theme and the digital and classic communication measures have been evolved by BBDO in Berlin. Further information about smart is available online: www.smart.com

“smart urban pioneers” ideas competition enters the next round

Stuttgart. The unique ideas competition “smart urban pioneers” is entering its second round. The jury of five under the patronage of Christian Vollmann, executive board member of the Bundesverband deutsche Startups e.V., has drawn up a shortlist of the ten most promising project ideas. The voting phase is now getting underway. Up to 31 March 2016, everyone has a chance to vote for their favourite at the international online brand magazine “smart magazine” www.smart-magazine.com. The shortlisted project ideas cover a spectrum ranging from urban gardening through social networking and urban art to healthy living. The three winners of the poll will present their projects to a broad audience on the international crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in May 2016. In addition to the attained crowdfunding, they will also receive prize money from smart to realise their ideas. In December 2015 smart launched the ideas competition “smart urban pioneers”, which consists of three phases: submission of entries, casting of votes and joint funding. The aim was to identify innovative ideas and projects from Germany, Austria and Switzerland which improve the quality of life in the city. Over 40 urban visionaries from all three countries took part, submitting their ideas up to the end of January via smart-magazine.com. The jury comprised of renowned international experts then assessed all the projects according to their potential to create added value for cities and their inhabitants. The members of the jury besides Christian Vollmann are Dr Joana Breidenbach (founder of betterplace.org, Berlin), Frank Schmiechen (editor-in-chief of the Gründerszene business magazine, Berlin), Ana S. Barros (architect and Instagram influencer from Vienna), Renat Heuberger (founder and CEO of the South Pole Group, Zurich) and Prof. Dr Marianne Reeb (Daimler Society and Technology Research Group, Stuttgart). The top ten project submissions chosen by the expert jury are now being put to a worldwide vote in the second phase of the competition. Anyone can vote for their favourite project on smart magazine and share their favourites with friends on the social networks or by email. Each user can vote once for a project every 24 hours. The prizes on offer: crowdfunding plus a total of 50,000 euros from smart The three winners of the poll will launch their own crowdfunding campaigns on Indiegogo in May 2016. The aim is to attain a previously defined funding target within four weeks to enable the respective ideas to be turned into reality. The final rankings of the best three smart urban pioneers will be determined in the final stage by means of a weighted rating principle incorporating the assessment by the expert jury, the number of votes and the success of the crowdfunding campaign. In addition to the attained crowdfunding, smart will also provide the three finalists with financial support: the winning idea will receive 25,000 euros, the runner-up 15,000 euros and the third-placed project 10,000 euros. Dream Result for the Dream-Car Brand

Detroit. Mercedes-Benz starts the New Year with the wind in its sales. In 2015, the brand delivered over 13 percent more vehicles worldwide than in the previous year – achieving its fifth record result in a row. The new E-Class, which celebrates its premiere at the 2016 North American International Auto Show, marks a major step into the future. The tenth generation of the business saloon sets accents with its clear yet emotional design, its exclusive interior and a host of technical innovations enabling comfortable, safe and efficient driving of the very highest order. Groundbreaking assistance systems and a first-class operating concept make the new E-Class the most intelligent business saloon. Mercedes-Benz is also expanding its collection of dream cars with the new SLC Roadster and the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet. “2015 was the outstanding year in our very long history. It was the most successful year for Mercedes since we invented the automobile. And we are determined to build on this success by expanding and rejuvenating our line-up. I think we owe it to Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler to mark the 130th anniversary,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, speaking at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. He continued: “Our new E-Class is an especially intelligent example of this.” The new E-Class marks the next step on the road to autonomous driving with the DRIVE PILOT driver assistance system. It can autonomously follow a vehicle travelling in front at speeds of up to 210 km/h, and at up to 130 km/h even without clear lane markings. If the indicator is activated for at least two seconds, the system can also steer the car into the neighbouring lane, having first identified the lane is clear.

22

Further intelligent assistance systems are Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist and Remote Parking Pilot, which, for the first time, enables remote parking using a smartphone app. The E-Class is even safer thanks to car-to-x communication. It is the first production model to exchange information with other vehicles and accordingly equipped infrastructure. Threats such as brokendown vehicles or surface ice can therefore be identified even earlier. Overall, the new assistance systems lower stress and the risk of accidents, while raising driving fun. smart cabrio – Individual Open-Air Pleasure Also celebrating its U.S. premiere in Detroit is the world’s most inexpensive cabriolet. At the same time, the smart cabrio is also the most exclusive way of driving a smart. At the touch of a button, the urban quick-change artist transforms from a closed two-seater into a car with a large folding roof and, ultimately, a cabriolet.

An Introduction to the Smart Scene in Israel (How Israel is becoming a Smart-Up Nation*)

Smart is a way of life, a world outlook, urbanism and sustainability at its best, less room taken on the road, less parking space required, and lots of fun. With just over 500 Smarts nationwide, Smarts are still quite exclusive and rare in Israel. Sales began in 2002, halted in 2005, and recommenced in 2011. Between those years there were several private imports. Most Smart models can be found here, including the City Coupé, Cabriole, Roadster, Brabus and a variety of special editions such as City Flame and City Beam. Despite the ideal weather conditions for it, there are no Crossblades as yet. The majority of Smarts are the 451 series and there are still several first generation 450 Smarts, some in mint condition, like my own. Recently the new 453 series was launched, revitalizing the local market. Smarts are all over the country but the Smart capital is, without a doubt, Tel Aviv. Within a square mile there, no fewer than 40 Smarts were counted. This concentration is mainly because of traffic congestion and the scarcity of parking, and also perhaps because people are more receptive and affluent. (Smarts in Israel will cost double as much as in Europe due to the very high taxation). Jerusalem too is experiencing a rise in Smart population and it is always a novel and refreshing sight in this ancient and holy city, much loved by children and attention catching when seen parking at right angles to the pavement. The coastal plain and Haifa also boast plenty of Smart cars, as well as other areas, both north and south of the country, such as Beersheba and Eilat.

The first Smart Club in Israel was initiated in June 2014, by the author with a vision to create a Smart Owners and Fans community, and to establish a meaningful Smart car culture in the country. It has created a platform for the exchange of information, know-how on operation, parts and maintenance, etc. and for leisure and community activities, all in the spirit of Smart. In 2015 an additional Smart club was established (replicating the same name). Together, there are now over 160 members of which about 50 are local Smart owners, others are Smart fans from Israel and from around the world. The current activities include regular social meetings and travel, formation of new city and area clubs, providing knowledge, and generating income. Planned are convivial and eco-friendly activities, contributing to urban life, and perhaps communities of both smart clubs working together.

The Club members in Israel reflect its diverse , vibrant and multi-cultural society: many are freelancers and entrepreneurs and from all walks of life, interests and expertise including architects, chefs and bakers, hitech workers, teachers, NGO reps, artists, actors, club and bar owners, hair stylists, market analysts, lawyers, taxi drivers, students and even one firefighter. We have established contacts with local veteran and sports car clubs who have provided us with useful insights. ST 15 in Budapest was really good for getting to know the various clubs and their members from all over the world. We look forward to new and exciting endeavours in the spirit of Smart and would like to get to know you too. Looking forward to ST 16 in Hamburg …

Great catch for Swindon netball club Youngsters from a Swindon netball club are definitely looking smart after landing a new kit sponsor. Thanks to the support of smart of Swindon, Croft Netball Club’s under 11 and under 12 teams have been supplied with skirts, tops and hoodies which they will wear for their fixtures in the Swindon & District Junior League. With more than 100 playing members, Jill Aldridge, who has been involved with Croft for more than 50 years, said that smart of Swindon’s sponsorship was invaluable. “We fund-raise when we can but it is hard to attract sponsorship when there are so many other sports trying to do the same,” she said. “We have just spent more than £700 on netballs so we are delighted that the kit has been taken care of thanks to the generosity of smart of Swindon.” Croft could net some extra funds from smart of Swindon too, as they will receive £150 if customers mention the club when purchasing a smart car. “We’re only too pleased to be able to support a club that has been part of the Swindon sporting community for many years,” said David Harries, Sales Manager, Mercedes-Benz and smart of Swindon. “Hopefully the new kit will give the girls a little bit of extra drive when they are on court and we wish them well for the rest of the season.”

Earlier this year, a new service for UK based smart car owners launched helping such owners to find a smart service or repair centre in a location to suit them. The ‘Help my smart’ online service allows users to select a geographic location, address, town, postcode of even part of a desired Retailer or Independent 3rd party company name. With full Google map functionality, once the desired area has been selected, markers identify smart Retailers and/or 3rd party companies who may be able to assist. A ‘pin’ on the map identifies the specific location of each such company and, when clicked, will offer full contact details and a direct link to that Retailer or 3rd party web site. As the service uses Google Maps, one can zoom to street level and use Google Street View to locate the premises. Retailers and 3rd Party companies (Independents) are further categorised indicating whether a company is a ‘Featured Retailer’ or ‘Featured Independent’. Such ‘Featured’ companies have further details, offers and promotions available via thesmartclub’s web site and/or ‘4site’ smart Magazine.

The service is providing incredibly popular with over 400 unique visitors per day visiting the service and this is increasing exponentially each month. You can find out more at www.helpmysmart.com or, if you are unable to access the web, you can contact thesmartclub directly on +44 (0) 8452 990332.

Mark Murphy Limited smart

Jim from Mark Murphy Limited, the largest independent fruit and vegetable wholesaler in Scotland, recently collected their 2nd smart from smart at Mercedes-Benz of Edinburgh. Their first fortwo – a 2009 coupe – had racked up a truly phenomenal 121,000 miles in 7 years of usage with the company, and was due to be updated. Jim, the driver, has been with Mark Murphy and Partner Limited for over 5 years, looking after Edinburgh and East Lothian accounts for the distributor. The smart was Jim’s main mode of transport taking him all across Central Scotland to visit customers on a weekly basis – including a memorable trip to Glenshee Ski Centre with an important delivery, surrounded by 6-foot snow drifts and - according to Jim - the smart “Never missed a beat!” There are lots of reasons that the smart was the ideal car for Mark Murphy Limited and essential for Jim, with his regular visits in to and outside the city: For Jim the smart is “Versatile, easy to park, easy going to drive on a motorway, efficient on fuel and has a good image for the company” The need to have a car with all these qualities made choosing another smart the obvious choice as a replacement. They went with another fabulous 2012 model fortwo in crystal white with silver tridion – perfect for another round of wrapping. Michael from smart of Edinburgh was extremely pleased to supply them with the new fortwo, and the team all look forward to seeing the car in and around the area, racking up the miles for Jim.

Statement on Flat Towing by Smart-Tow.com & Smart-Trailers.co.uk Following the recent official advice from smart regarding the issues of towing your smart (see full advice and guidance in 4site Issue 31, Page 24), we have received the following letter regarding ‘Flat Towing’ by Smart-Tow.com & Smart-Trailers.co.uk (dated 1st December 2015): “It has been brought to our attention that some of our competitors in the small car flat tow market maybe giving members of the public misleading information regarding the suitability of smart cars for flat towing behind Motorhomes, Camping Cars etc. The new smart 453, both fortwo and forfour, with the automatic DSG gearbox (Twinamic) cannot be flat towed and must be towed on a trailer with all four of the 453’s wheels off the ground. We have not been made aware of any technical reason, other than the Manual says so, why the manual 453 all 451’s and all 450’s could not be flat towed subject to the precautions mentioned below. David Winfield Hi,

I have wanted a smart fortwo car for years. This year we saw the Smart Grandstyle and instantly loved it. After a visit to Smart Birmingham along with a beaming smile. We purchased it even before we saw it. Dwyane the sales person said it was one of the fastest sale that he has had. He gave a first-class service. We are having great fun going everywhere in it. My wife’s sister loved it so much that after a test drive Deb and Gary her husband went to Smart Watford and ordered a Smart fortwo in blue. She has called David and Maries Grandstyle Noddy 1 and there’s Noddy 2. We love the cars and have joined the smart club. Look at our first outing to Bridgnorth. Then when Noddy 1 met Noddy 2. Thanks for a great online smartclub and magazine. Regards David and Marie Noddy 1. Deb and Gary Noddy 2. Submitted by David Winfield
