EXPERT WARNS NOT TO SWIM WEARING

JEWELLERY

Summer is the perfect time to dive into swimming pools and enjoy the sun, but did you know that taking a dip could spell trouble for your jewellery? While it might be tempting to keep your precious pieces on while you swim, the chemicals in pool water can cause significant damage. The team at Milton Diamonds created a comprehensive guide on how swimming pools can affect your jewellery and what you can do to protect it.

The Chlorine Culprit

Gold: Even though gold is relatively resistant to tarnishing, chlorine can weaken it, especially if your jewellery is made from lower karat gold, which contains other metals more reactive to chlorine. This weakening can lead to cracks and breakages.

Silver: Chlorine can cause silver to tarnish and darken much faster than usual, ruining its shine and appearance.

Platinum: Platinum is more resistant to corrosion than gold and silver, but prolonged exposure to chlorine can still weaken this durable metal over time.

Gemstones

Porous Stones: Gemstones like opals, pearls, and turquoise are porous and can absorb chlorine and other pool chemicals. This absorption can lead to discoloration and structural damage.

Settings and Adhesives: Chlorine can also weaken the settings that hold gemstones in place, increasing the risk of losing stones, especially if they are held with glue or other adhesives.

Corrosion and Tarnishing

Chains and Links

Fine chains and intricate links are particularly vulnerable to corrosion from chlorine exposure. This can lead to breakage and the potential loss of the jewellery piece.

Surface Finishes

Rhodium plating, often used on white gold, and other surface treatments can wear away more quickly when exposed to chlorine, diminishing the jewellery’s protective layer and appearance.

Colour Fading

Enamel and Dyes

Enamel or dyed elements on your jewellery can fade or become discoloured due to chlorine exposure.

Some gemstones can also lose their

vibrant colour or become duller with repeated chlorine exposure.

Precautions to Protect Your Jewellery

Remove Jewellery Before Swimming

The best way to protect your jewellery from chlorine damage is to remove it before entering a swimming pool. This simple step can prevent a lot of potential harm.

Rinse Thoroughly

If your jewellery does come into contact with chlorine, rinse it thoroughly with clean, fresh water as soon as possible to remove any chemical residues.

Regular Cleaning and Inspection

Regularly clean your jewellery and have it inspected by a professional jeweller. This ensures that settings are secure and there is no damage or weakening of the metal.

Safe Storage

When not wearing your jewellery, store it in a dry, safe place, preferably in a jewellery box. This protects it from environmental factors that could cause damage.

Amy Irvin a at Milton Diamonds says:

Swimming pools are a fun and refreshing way to beat the heat, but they can be detrimental to your jewellery. By understanding the risks and taking simple precautions, you can enjoy your summer activities without compromising the beauty and integrity of your precious pieces.

The Environment Agency –Abu Dhabi Mission with OceanX Unlocks New Depths of

Marine Research

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has completed a groundbreaking, joint exploration mission of the Arabian Gulf, one of the world›s warmest seas, as part of a signed multilateral MoU with M42 Healthcare, Bayanat, and OceanX to explore the impacts of climate change on UAE waters.

Over the course of a -20 day expedition aboard the OceanXplorer, the most advanced research vessel ever built, the team conducted joint research into environmental DNA (eDNA), analysed underwater microbial communities, evaluated nutrient concentrations, studied populations of large marine species, and surveyed the geology and bathymetry of the seafloor

around

the UAE.

During the expedition, a total of 10 submersible trips were conducted, including the first submersible excursion undertaken by two female Emirati scientists from EAD. The research expedition included 19 dives using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), collected 926 samples of marine water, biodiversity, and sediment, and supported 9 different studies from the EAD’s

Abu Dhabi Environment Research Network in the UAE - a pioneering research network launched by the Agency to enhance environmental research in Abu Dhabi. Scientists involved in this mission included four Emirati scientists engaged in ground-breaking research on

deep-sea biology, geology and oceanography around the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. In addition, onboard were scientists from five entities of ADERN.

A total of 13 DNA samples were extracted from seven different whale and dolphin species. The genomes of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, Indo-Pacific finless porpoise, and Indian Ocean humpback dolphin were also fully sequenced.

In addition, a -773nautical mile aerial survey was conducted, during which 12 sightings of various megafauna were recorded, including bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, sea turtles, hammerhead sharks and manta rays. The first observation of an

endangered bramble shark in the UAE was made at a depth of about 850 metres.

A total of 86 deep-water coral specimens were collected, and 1,257 square kilometres of high-resolution, multibeam bathymetry mapping was conducted, revealing active fault systems. By mapping the sea floor, the information gathered will help researchers identify and understand certain types of cracks and moving pieces in the Earth›s crust,

which, crucially, helps to predict where earthquakes might happen and how underground fluids move in the area.

Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector, at EAD said: “The United Arab Emirates features some of the planet’s warmest seas, providing insight into the impact of rising temperatures anticipated with rapid climate change. Gaining a deeper knowledge of these marine ecosystems and their

diverse life forms will enhance our ability to foresee the worldwide consequences of future climate change factors.” He added: “Our partnership with OceanX on this expedition covers more than just exploration – it’s a commitment to the future. By providing invaluable data and insights into our changing seas, this pioneering work lays the foundation for conservation and policy-making, ensuring the health of marine ecosystems for generations to come.”

“Embarking on a groundbreaking mission alongside our esteemed partners in the United Arab Emirates marked a milestone in our pursuit of oceanic understanding and conservation,” said Vincent Pieribone, Co-CEO of OceanX. “We are proud to be a partner of EAD and continue to collaborate on our shared pursuits for sustainable future rooted in scientific research and technological advancement.”

As well as a detailed exploration of the UAE’s deep water coral reefs, OceanX’s -20day mission built on previous projects executed onboard Jaywun to complete marine life genome sequencing, where EAD teamed up with M42 Environmental Sciences and Bayanat for the first ever study of eDNA in the region, analysing 37 eDNA samples collected at 19 sites.

This contributes to the project initiated on Jaywun, which

is the first in the region to perform eDNA and fish samples sequencing in a moving vessel and analyse samples in real-time by using advanced technology.

This aids in understanding the genetic diversity and makeup of different fish populations, through which scientists can better assess their health, adaptability, and resilience against climate change.

Releases

214 Rehabilitated Turtles into Their Natural Habitat

as part of the Year of Sustainability

In line with the Year of Sustainability, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), in partnership with The National Aquarium (TNA) and The Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center (YSWRRC) has released a group of Green, Hawksbill and Loggerhead rehabilitated turtles into their natural habitats, via the beach at Jumeirah Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi. The National Aquarium oversaw the rehabilitation of 200 turtles while the YSWRRC rehabilitated a group of 14 Hawkbill turtles.

The first release of the turtles took place on 6th June and was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, EAD’s Secretary General, Fouad Mashal, President and Vice Chairman of Al Barakah Holding on behalf of The National Aquarium, Capt. Saif Al Mheiri, Managing Director, Abu Dhabi Maritime, Shaikha Al Nowais, Vice President Owner Relationship Management, Rotana, Mr. Sabri Mohammed Aljabri, General Manager of Shared Facilities Company of Taweelah (SFCO), Taghrid Alsaeed, the Executive Director, Group Communications and Destination Marketing from Miral and Thomas Kaferle, SeaWorld® Yas Island, Abu Dhabi General Manager.

On 8th June there was a second release attended by the general public which was held at Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas that involved a series of fun activations.

The release of the turtles is a culmination of the rescue and rehabilitation programme of EAD in collaboration with The National Aquarium since a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in 2020 with a total of 1067 turtles being rescued. EAD also signed an MoU with YSWRRC in 2023, rescuing a group of 23 turtles.

Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al

Dhaheri, EAD’s Secretary General on the occasion said: “It is always exciting when it is that time of the year where we release turtles back into their natural habitat. It reveals that all our rescue and rehabilitation programmes, whether in partnership with The National Aquarium or The Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center have been a great success.

This cohort of turtles are a large number of 214 which will allow us to continue building a stable and abundant population of turtles in Abu Dhabi waters. We give special care to the turtles and we do all this work so that we are preserving our marine species for future generations so that they can enjoy a flourishing environment.”

were present for an emotional and symbolic farewell.”

SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi General Manager, Thomas Kaferle, said: “We are extremely proud of our partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. Today, we celebrate a significant milestone: our contribution to the rehabilitation and release of Hawksbill turtles back into their natural habitat on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. This achievement underscores our commitment to establishing The Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center as the region’s largest dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation, and return facility. Our goal is to leverage our world-class facility and SeaWorld’s 60 years of experience not only to rehabilitate and return these animals but also to support the vision of creating a sustainable future for generations to come.”

She added: “I would like to thank the public and volunteers who have assisted us in rescuing these vulnerable species and our partners who have helped rehabilitate the turtles prior to us releasing them. We greatly appreciate the dedication of the teams ensuring that the turtles get the best possible care.”

Fouad Mashal, President and Vice Chairman of Al Barakah Holding said: “Today is a special day for The National Aquarium as we are returning turtle number 1000 back to the wild. This milestone marks an incredible effort by the team at The National Aquarium who have rescued, rehabilitated and released such a huge number of turtles, making this project one of the most successful in the world.

The entire process of turtle number 1000’s rescue and eventual release can be followed on The National Aquarium Instagram page @thenationalaq. The family responsible for the rescue of turtle number 1000

EAD has been researching, monitoring and protecting marine turtles in Abu Dhabi since 1999 and has succeeded in maintaining a stable population in Abu Dhabi waters. There are four main marine turtle species in Abu Dhabi – both Green Turtles and Hawksbills frequent the emirate’s waters, while Olive Ridley and Loggerheads are occasional visitors.

Decades of research by EAD indicate that several turtles can show signs of cold stunning – a condition in which sea turtles become very weak and inactive from exposure to cold temperatures and therefore become lethargic and are eventually unable to swim causing them to float on the surface of the water. In some cases, cold stunning can also lead to a build-up of barnacles on their shells, which hampers the turtle’s ability to move, hence EAD’s keenness to save them, nurture them back to life and then release them back into their habitats.

Capturing the magnificence of Qasr Al Watan’s exterior

Qasr Al Watan reflects centuries of Arabian architectural design and tradition in a palace built for the 21st century. Representing much more than a traditional palace, Qasr Al Watan stands an exquisitely crafted tribute to the region’s Arabian heritage and artistry. Its architectural design echoes the significance of the exhibits housed within its walls and the function of its most iconic rooms as one of the world’s only working palaces.

Qasr Al Watan’s journey begins far before one even approaches the Palace’s main door, rather the experience commences while being transported from the Visitor Center as the Palace comes into full view in all of its architectural grandeur through the Palace Gardens.

In the Palace Gardens, one can find the sunlight reflecting off of two silver Power of Words sculptures – that are smaller replicas of the original Power of Words sculpture housed within the Great Hall of the Palace.

The Palace’s majestic exteriors reflect the beauty of Arabian mosaic designs adorning the limestone and white granite walls. Visitors can bask in the breathtaking outdoor surroundings, and marvel at the same mosaic patterns and Islamic-based designs that make Qasr Al Watan one of the UAE’s most iconic cultural landmarks.

Qasr Al Watan’s exterior is the perfect place to fall in love with the stunning Abu Dhabi skyline - especially with the Abu Dhabi sunset glowing in soft shades of pink, orange and purple. There, visitors can enjoy a superb sunset with Qasr Al Watan in center stage or simply Abu Dhabi’s iconic skyline on the waters. Once night falls, visitors can watch the Palace of the Nation light up the night with a spectacular audiovisual display. The Palace in Motion evening light and sound show projects onto the façade of the Palace a story told in three acts and draws a link between the aspirations of Qasr Al Watan and the vision of the nation, reflecting on the UAE’s journey of the past, present and future.

How climate change worsens heatwaves, droughts, wildfires and floods

More than 70 million people in the US are under heat alerts this week, with extreme temperatures as high as 105F (41C) forecast in some areas.

Scientists say many extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of climate change.

1. More extreme rain

For every 1C rise in average temperature, the atmosphere can hold about 7% more moisture.

This can result in more droplets and heavier rainfall, sometimes in a shorter space of time and over a smaller area.

Globally, heavy rainfall events have become more frequent and intense over most land regions due to human activity, according to the UN’s climate body, the IPCC.

It says this pattern will continue with further warming.

Scientists assess whether individual extreme weather events can be attributed to climate change by considering both natural and human causes.

In the case of the intense rainfall which fell in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman in April 2024, it was difficult to conclude exactly how much of a role climate change played.

Heavy rain in this region is rare, which offers researchers fewer historical comparisons.

But these types of events have become 10-40% heavier, and climate change is the most

likely explanation, according to the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group.

In May 2024, southern Brazil experienced heavy rains which lead to widespread flooding, displacing about 150,000 people.

The Rio Grande do Sul region that was hit is particularly vulnerable to heavy rains, as it is the meeting point of tropical and polar air masses.

But climate expert Francisco Eliseu Aquino told the AFP news agency that “these interactions [have] intensified with climate change”.

The mayor of Derna in northern Libya suggested as many as 20,000 may have been killed as a result of the flooding

Scientists believe the heavy rainfall which caused deadly flooding in northern Libya in September 2023 was made up to 50 times more likely by climate change.

2. Hotter, longer heatwaves

Even a small increase in average temperatures makes a big difference to heat extremes.

As the range of daily temperatures shifts to warmer levels, hotter days are more likely and more intense.

In April 2024, temperatures in Mali hit 48.5C during an extreme heatwave across the Sahel region of Africa, which was linked to increased hospitalisations and deaths.

This level of heat would not have been possible without human-caused climate change, the WWA found, and will become more common as the world continues to warm.

In the UK, temperatures topped 40C for the first time on record in July 2022, causing extensive disruption. This would have been extremely unlikely without climate change, the WWA says.

Heatwaves are also becoming longer in many places, including the UK.

This can happen as a result of heat domes, which are areas of high pressure where hot air is pushed down and trapped, causing temperatures to soar over large areas.

A graphic showing how heat domes are formed. 1) A mass of warm air builds up in still and dry summer conditions 2) High pressure in the atmosphere pressures the warm air down 3) The air is compressed and gets even hotter

One theory suggests that higher temperatures in the Arctic - which has warmed nearly four times faster than the global average - are causing strong winds called the jet stream to slow, increasing the likelihood of heat domes. A heat dome is expected to hit the western part of the US later this week - affecting more than 34 million residents across California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

Forecasters predict temperatures to be 5.5-11C (10-20F) above normal, potentially posing a risk to human health and the environment from resulting wildfires. Is the UK getting hotter? Life at 50 degrees

3. Longer droughts Linking climate change with specific individual droughts can be difficult.

Planning your next international trip for the summer?

Check out 6 simple steps to get your visa on time!

There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as embarking on an international journey, immersing yourself in diverse cultures, and creating lasting memories. Yet, amidst the excitement of planning and packing, securing your visa often goes unnoticed. Whether your travels are for leisure, business, or education, obtaining the necessary visa is the crucial first step to realizing your travel aspirations. Visas come in various forms, tailoured to your travel purpose, whether it’s for tourism, business endeavours, or educational pursuits. Here are a few steps to ensure that you apply for your visa accurately to receive it on time.

Destination Identification

The foundation of any successful visa application journey begins with a clear destination in mind. Whether you’re dreaming of exploring the streets of Europe, embarking on a business venture in Asia, or pursuing academic opportunities in Canada or the United Kingdom or Australia, identifying your intended travel destination is the crucial first step. Understanding your desired destination is not only crucial for selecting the appropriate visa type but also sets the tone for your entire travel experience.

Check Visa Processing Timelines

Once you’ve identified your destination, it’s imperative to familiarize yourself with the visa processing timelines specific to that location. Timelines for visa processing are clearly outlined on the relevant Embassy/Consulate’s official websites. Visa processing timelines can vary significantly depending on factors such as the country you’re applying to, the type of visa you require, and the time of year. For instance, popular tourist destinations may experience longer processing times during peak travel seasons, while certain visa categories, such as work visas, may have different processing timelines. By researching and understanding these timelines in

advance, you can effectively plan your application submission to ensure timely processing and avoid any unnecessary delays.

Book Visa Appointment Early

Booking an appointment to submit your visa application well in advance is essential in navigating the visa application process smoothly and getting your visa on time. Appointments can be booked on www.vfsglobal.com absolutely free of charge! However, some governments require pre-payment of the service fee at the time of booking the appointment. This payment will be reimbursed or deducted during the application process. Additionally, for more convenience, applicants can opt for optional services such as ‘Visa At Your Doorstep’ and submit their applications from the location of their choice, and Premium Lounge to get endto-end assistance with their application submission from the comfort of a plush lounge. By applying early, travellers can avoid last-minute stress, with most countries accepting visa applications up to 90 days (3 months) before their date of travel. Schengen visa applicants can apply for their visa up to 180 days (6 months) before their date of travel.

Review Documentation and Requirements

Attention to detail is paramount when preparing your visa application materials. Carefully review the documentation and requirements outlined by the embassy or consulate of the country you intend to visit. Commonly required documents may include a valid passport, proof of financial means, travel itinerary, and completed visa application forms. Ensure that you gather all necessary documents and meticulously adhere to each requirement with precision. By double-checking your documentation and ensuring compliance with the specified guidelines, you can significantly increase the likelihood of a successful application outcome.

Access Comprehensive Visa Information

To ensure that you’re thoroughly informed and adequately prepared for the visa application process, leverage resources such as the official website of VFS Global, www.vfsglobal.com. VFS Global’s official website provides a convenient and user-friendly interface where applicants can input their source and destination

countries and access comprehensive information on visa application procedures, appointment scheduling options, and centre locations. You can also access detailed guidance on various visa types, associated fees, and frequently asked questions. For example, if you’re applying for a Schengen visa to explore the enchanting landscapes of Europe, the VFS Global website provides extensive resources and support to help you navigate the application process with confidence.

#DoNotFallForFraud

Visa applicants are advised to beware of fraudulent entities who charge money from applicants for scheduling appointments or providing any other services using VFS Global’s name or independently. VFS Global does not charge any fee for booking appointments on www.vfsglobal.com which is the official website catering to visa applications. However, some governments require pre-payment of the service fee at the time of booking the appointment. This payment will be reimbursed or deducted during the application process. This step is only to ensure genuine travellers use appointment booking and the system is kept safe from misuse by fraudulent entities.

Furthermore, it’s essential to plan ahead, ensuring passport validity and budgeting for expenses. Consider expedited processing options if needed and stay updated on visa requirements. Make sure to provide accurate information on the application form and submit required documents promptly. Note that optional services like Visa At Your Doorstep or Premium Lounge do not expedite processing.

Obtaining your visa is the critical first step in planning your international adventure this summer. By understanding visa types, preparing necessary documents, following the application process diligently, and planning ahead, you can embark on your journey with confidence. Each meticulous detail attended to ensure a sense of assurance, eagerly anticipating the adventures and memories awaiting in distant lands.

W ELLNESS MIDDLE EAST

We live in a time of oversharing, where social media has become a two-headed beast of exhibitionism on the one hand, and voyeurism on the other. When people are constantly sharing details and pictures of themselves, where they are and what they are doing, this is exhibitionism: behaviour that constantly attracts attention to oneself. But this is only possible because of the other head of the beast, voyeurism.

Although voyeurism traditionally refers to deriving enjoyment from secretly watching people in private moments, it equally applies to the fascination and obsession of watching others on social media. The two heads of the beast are constantly feeding each other.

I am not speaking about the occasional use of social media as a way of staying connected and sharing what is happening in our lives with those close to us. I am speaking specifically of constantly sharing and posting, where

Cancel the noise

a device has become the interface through which the world is experienced. I am also speaking of people who spend hours a week scrolling through posts by others, liking, commenting.

In the former, the person is constantly elsewhere, performing for an audience, and in the latter, the person is vicariously living through the lives of others.

Irrespective of whether I am oversharing or spending a lot of time watching other people, I am not present. I am actually elsewhere in terms of the focus of my attention, my emotional investment and my relationship to my body and senses.

This is the biggest problem of our time: we are almost never fully present in the moment. To clarify, these are (some) of the dimensions of being present:

• Being in the here-and-now (not somewhere else in terms of thinking about the

Juan Korkie, Clinical Psychologist at The LightHouse Arabia

past or the future).

• Being in this place (not somewhere else in my head, telling a story about this place, or wanting to be somewhere else).

• Being in this body as a whole (not just in my head or feelings).

• Being with another (really seeing and focusing on those around us).

• Being here willingly (not just being present for the sake of it, or while I am waiting to do something else).

• Being here fully (not just in my head, but allowing the moment, irrespective of it.

• Being good or bad, to fully resonate in my whole being).

Oversharing and vicariously consuming the experiences of others are both actually symptoms, not the problem itself. Similarly, the fact that we are typically not very present is also not the problem, but the symptom. The real question, to which every answer will be very individual, is why we cannot tolerate being present. And this I see in my therapy every day. When we slow down and become present, we immediately become more connected with what lives inside of us. I am speaking of our internal world that starts to push through the surface, entering into our awareness.

This is the origin of the beast. Not that we spend too much time on devices, and not that we are not present. We do not live inside ourselves and we struggle to tolerate that which we have been suppressing, avoiding and escaping. As I said, the content of this will be different for each individual, but the process of disconnecting from our internal world is the same. If we were to stop, and slow down, and connect, we will be confronted with the unfinished work of our life. We will be confronted with our complex feelings and thoughts, often unprocessed and unintegrated, about ourselves, others and our place in the world.

As such, the two-headed beast of oversharing and vicarious living is just one of many ways of not embarking on what I think of as the inner journey.

The above probably does not sound like a great motivator, but it only describes the result of becoming disconnected from ourselves. When we form a closer relationship with ourselves there is a vast world of riches that is re-

vealed. I am speaking of the benefits of walking the path of really diving into ourselves, of really forming an accepting and compassionate relationship with ourselves, of fearlessly embracing both the light and the dark, the good and the bad, inside of us.

There is no quick fix that can give you this. It is a journey, but there are ways to start the journey:

Stop Recording Life, Live it Instead. Stop trying to capture moments with a device, capture them with your full presence instead.

Use All Your Senses, it’s 3D. Intentionally move away from just looking and thinking. Try to awake and deepen your other senses.

Stop the Internal Dialogue. Take conscious control of what is happening in your head. Repeatedly practise bringing your thoughts and attention back to the moment.

Detox from Sensationalism. Stop pursuing the intense, amazing, awesome and earth-shattering. Consciously move away from the addiction to intense experiences. Develop your ability to find beauty and pleasure in the mundane.

Stop being a Tourist. Stop trying to capture the top attractions of life in a short time as possible. Engage in activities that have no outcome. Slow down, step away from what is known and familiar.

Explore, not Capture. Consciously and intentionally become more interested in what is happening around you. Explore rather than capture, experience things deeply rather than rushing to the next thing.

Stop Watching, Get Dirty. Step into your life, do new things, make mistakes, have your own experiences. These are your experiences and they are far more valuable than the lives of others.

Don’t Panic. If you do the above you will start to also become connected with parts of you that may have been neglected. Give it space. Embrace it. It will be difficult, but it becomes easier with time, and the benefits last forever.

Emma is a Simplicity Life Coach, whose approach extends beyond merely organisng spaces. She prioritises how you aspire to feel in your home and life, addressing underlying negative habits, beliefs, and emotional barriers to enhance your emotional, mental, and physical health.

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us struggle to maintain an orderly home environment. We are constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, such as work, childcare, and eldercare, leaving little time and energy for your home. Financial constraints can also limit access to organisational tools and services that could help manage clutter. When time and money are tight, tasks like decluttering can seem less urgent compared to other daily demands. This can lead to a gradual buildup of items, making the problem more difficult to address over time.

Cluttered spaces are often stigmatised as a sign of laziness or poor time management, but the reality is far more complex. Understanding the true causes of clutter and its health impacts can help address the issue more compassionately and effectively. Your home should be a sanctuary of peace and calm, a place for you to relax and unwind away from the stresses of the world, it shouldn’t be adding to your stress and making you fell unwell.

There are many underlying causes to accumulating excess amounts of stuff and living in a cluttered home, and its not necessarily what everyone thinks - you aren’t simply lazy!

Here are some of the underlying reasons why you may be struggling to let go or even get started.

You’re emotionally attached to your things and you struggle to part with items due

to the sentimental value they hold. Objects can serve as tangible memories of people, places and experiences, making it emotionally challenging to declutter. This attachment often stems from a fear of losing those memories or dishonouring past experiences or relatives who are now deceased. The psychological weight of deciding what to keep and what to discard can be overwhelming, leading to procrastination and the accumulation of more items. Additionally, beliefs instilled during childhood, such as the idea that keeping things is a sign of responsibility or respect, can often influence our tendency to hold onto items we don’t even like or have any use.

If you’ve never really addressed the volume of stuff you own and have accumulated so much over the years then the sheer volume of clutter can be overwhelming. This can lead to procrastination. The task seems so daunting that it becomes easier to avoid it altogether. This is often misunderstood as laziness when it is actually a coping mechanism for feeling overwhelmed. The process of decluttering requires decision-making, which can be mentally exhausting, especially when faced with large amounts of stuff. This can result in a cycle of avoidance, where the clutter continues to grow unchecked.

We often then find ourselves spending more money either moving to a larger home to accommodate all the stuff or if you’ve sadly lost close relatives you may end up paying for a storage unit as you simply don’t have the time or emotional

capacity to go through their things or the space to bring more items into your home. So your clutter can cost you way more money than you think. Wouldn’t you rather be spending it on enjoying life instead?

Other life transitions like getting married, having children, changing jobs etc can all create changes to your routine where maintaining your things isn’t a top priority at that time. This changes also often come with an extra influx of new items and more stuff filing the space and making your home feel more cluttered and claustrophobic.

Finally if you struggle with a condition such as depression, anxiety or ADHD this can significantly impact your ability to organise and maintain a tidy home. These conditions affect motivation, energy levels, and executive functioning, making clutter a symptom rather than a cause of laziness. For instance, ADHD can impair an individual’s ability to prioritise tasks, leading to unfinished projects and disorganisation, however I’d like to add here, as a person who is diagnosed with both ADHD and anxiety prioritising time to go through and let go has greatly helped reduce my overwhelm and allowed me to manage my own symptoms more affectively. The less things around me, the less choices I have to make, the less overwhelmed I am and the more productive and happier I become.

Practical Steps to Tackle Clutter

So you now know your not lazy and are aware of some reasons why you may be struggling to let go of clutter, what can you do to start making changes.

Start Small:

Begin with a small, manageable area rather than attempting to declutter the entire house at once. This can help build momentum and prevent feelings of overwhelm. Tackling a single drawer or closet can provide a sense of accomplishment and encourage further decluttering efforts.

Create a System:

Develop a consistent system for dealing with clutter. Regularly scheduled decluttering sessions can help maintain order. Know what you will do with the items you no longer wish to own, where will you donate, recycle or sell the items locally to you. Designating specific places for items and adhering to the “one in, one out” rule can prevent new clutter from accumulating.

Seek Support:

Sometimes, professional help is necessary. Professional declutter consultants and Home organisers, lifestyle coaches, and support/Facebook groups can offer practical advice and emotional guidance. Professional organisers can provide tailored solutions and strategies, while coaches can address the underlying emotional and psychological factors contributing to clutter and help you work towards how you wish to feel in your home.

Mindfulness and Minimalism:

Adopting a more mindful approach to possessions and embracing minimalism can reduce the accumulation of unnecessary items. Mindfulness encourages thoughtful consideration of what you truly need and value, helping to curb impulse buying and hoarding tendencies. Ask yourself some questions before you buy something new. Do I already own something similar? What could I use the money for instead if I didn’t buy this item? Do I have the space to store it and the time to maintain, clean and manage it?

Self-Compassion:

It’s important to be kind to yourself during the decluttering process. Recognising that clutter is not a moral failing, but a common challenge that many in todays consumer society struggle with, can alleviate self-blame and encourage progress. Celebrating small victories and acknowledging efforts can boost motivation and make the process more manageable. Take pictures and videos before you start so when you are having self doubts you can reflect back and see how far you’ve come.

By understanding the deeper causes of clutter and addressing them with practical steps, you can transform your living spaces and experience numerous health and life benefits. Embracing a clutter-free lifestyle can lead to a more calmer, productive, and fulfilling existence alongside improved mental and physical health.

Switch Foods Celebrates One Year of Revolutionizing Plant-Based Meat in the UAE

Switch Foods, a pioneering food tech startup from the UAE, celebrates its first anniversary this month. Since its launch in mid2023, this home-grown brand has used its innovative plant-based meat alternatives to promote delicious yet healthy and sustainable eating across the UAE.

In its inaugural year, Switch Foods launched its first plant-based meat production facility in KEZAD, Abu Dhabi, inaugurated by former UAE Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Mariam bint Mohammed AlMheiri. The brand has since expanded its reach to over 200 online and offline stores, including notable retailers such as Spinneys, Carrefour, Lulu, Kibsons, and Talabat. Additionally, they have partnered with key F&B and hospitality venues like Al Safadi, Paul, Millennium Hotels, and The First Group.

Switch Foods is committed to advancing the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051 by producing highly nutritious foods locally, reducing reliance on food imports, and significantly lowering carbon footprint. The brand aligns its efforts with global sustainability priorities, especially relevant given the UAE’s role in global climate initiatives, having successfully hosted COP28. Research indicates that plant-based meat generates almost 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional meat, contributing significantly to a more sustainable food supply.

The brand’s signature plant-based meat alternatives, such as Kabab, Kafta, Soujuk,

Mince Meat, and Burger Patties, are expertly crafted to mimic the taste and texture of regular meat, providing a seamless transition for those seeking a healthier lifestyle without compromising on taste or nutrition. All products are 100% made of plants, GMO-free, soy-free, allergen-free, gluten-free, vegan, and halal-certified.

Edward Hamod, Founder of Switch Foods, expressed his gratitude: “As we celebrate our first anniversary, we continue to be driven by the positive impact our products have on people and the planet. I am incredibly proud of our team, our investors’ support, and our customers’ trust in contributing to living a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.”

In a region that has one of the world’s highest obesity and diabetes rates, plantbased meat products can make a real contribution to improving health and well-being. That is in part because having just two servings of processed red meat a week can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, whereas opting for plant-based protein sources has the reverse effect, per a 2023 study by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

As part of its expansion strategy, having already listed its products in Kuwait, Lebanon, and Qatar, and in the lead-up to COP29 in Baku, the brand aims to reach new markets offering a more varied product range with the vision of accelerating sustainability from the UAE to the world through plant-based meat alternatives.
