Al Ain Zoo Celebrates Conservation Success with
As part of Al Ain Zoo ongoing efforts to preserve endangered species, Al Ain Zoo is delighted to announce the birth of three new Arabian sand cats for the first time in several years. The sand cat is considered an endangered animal according to the Red List of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The Zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams have been diligently pairing Arabian sand cats based on their Genetic origins and age groups at the Arabian Sand Cat Breeding Center. This is the first specialized facility globally dedicated for taking care and breeding of these rare animals, operating under international standards.
The newborns are in good health and are thriving in an environment that meets global standards. They receive comprehensive care from the Zoo’s team, which follows best practices in veterinary, nutritional, and behavioral care, allowing the Al Ain Zoo to offer unique and enjoyable experiences for its visitors.
Engineer Ahmed Eisa Al Harasi, Acting Director General of the Zoo & Aquarium Public Institution in Al Ain, stated: “We are pleased with the birth of these three cats and proud of the success of our breeding program. We will continue to implement specialized programs and conduct field research to study and breed these species in their natural habitats.” He added that the Arabian sand cat is a vital desert creature contributing to the ecological balance of the desert ecosystem. At Al Ain Zoo, we aim to raise community awareness about the desert environment and the importance of preserving it. Looking ahead, we are committed to studying the genetic patterns of the Arabian sand cat, increasing its population, and collaborating with local and global entities in the field of conservation and protection.”
One of Al Ain Zoo’s most significant achievements in the Arabian sand cat protection program is its collaboration with various environmental agencies dedicated to preserving the species. This effort resulted in the
What do you picture when you think of Al Ain? Perhaps selfies on Jebel Hafit or getting up close with a giraffe at the famous Al Ain Zoo or stepping back in time at the century-old Qasr Al Muwaiji. A new campaign by Experience Abu Dhabi showcases all this and more, inviting viewers on a journey to discover the rich history, exciting attractions, and enticing hidden gems of the Living Oasis city, Al Ain — a destination waiting to be explored with friends and family.
The four-part documentary-style campaign takes viewers to the heart of Al Ain, showcasing the city and surrounding region’s rich tapestry of culture, adventure, and tradition. From exploring ancient forts and lush oases to trying thrilling outdoor activities and discovering vibrant local life, the documentary follows two Emirati friends as they discover how Al Ain seamlessly offers an unparalleled tapestry of experiences that will leave you craving more.
The campaign stars Emirati corporate banker turned photographer Obaid AlBudoor, and Salem Al Attas, an engineer by day and the first Emirati slam poet by night. The duo travel across Al Ain, trying traditional skills such as archery and horseback riding, and dive into modern-day, white-knuckle pursuits that take them out of their comfort zone.
Just over an hour away from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Al Ain has been inhabited for over 5,000 years. It is dotted with archaeological sites, restored forts, and early human settlements that have given rise to crafts and traditions that continue to exist till today.
During their time in Al Ain, Obaid, and Salem find that this living oasis is a world away from the hustle of busy city life, weaving together adventure, nature, history, and culture into one incredible destination. The duo explores Al Ain’s vast oasis of lush date palms, discover secret underground rivers fed by natural mountain springs, learn about the city’s proud heritage, and spend time with welcoming locals.
“As a photographer, traveller, and explorer, it’s very rewarding to be able to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and recharge my creative energy in such a tranquil and lush place,” said Obaid. “There’s a unique energy to Al Ain that really made an impact on me.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed discovering Al Ain, and I hope that those who follow our adventures—whether white-water rafting, trying local crafts, delving into Al Ain’s vibrant coffee and café culture, or immersing themselves in all it has to offer—are inspired to visit and create their own unforgettable memories in this amazing destination” added Salem.
Have Obaid and Salem inspired you to have your own Al Ain adventure? Take your friends or family to Al Ain to discover for yourself that a destination is not just about what you do, it’s how it makes you feel when you’re there. You will discover that this living oasis has a vibe of its own.

Coffee is more than just a beverage; it is a beloved ritual and a staple in many cultures around the world. From a morning pickme-up to a comforting afternoon break, coffee offers a variety of flavors and experiences that cater to different tastes and preferences. In restaurants and cafes, the coffee menu can feel quite overwhelming, featuring a range of drinks that may leave you wondering about their differences, and which one is best for you. Join LaBrioche explore some of the most popular coffee drinks, including lattes, cappuccinos, and more, to help you choose your next cup with confidence.
At the heart of most coffee drinks is the espresso, a concentrated form of coffee made by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. Known for its rich flavor and velvety texture, espresso serves as the foundation for many popular coffee beverages. On its own, it is typically served in small, strong shots, offering a robust and intense experience.
The latte is a favorite among coffee enthusiasts who appreciate a creamy, smooth texture. A latte is made by combining one or more shots of espresso with steamed milk and a small amount of milk foam on top. The high ratio of milk to espresso gives it a milder flavor compared to other coffee drinks, making it an excellent choice for
those who prefer a less intense coffee experience. Lattes can also be customized with various flavors, such as vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut, offering a personalized touch to your coffee break.
An iced latte is a refreshing twist on the classic latte, perfect for warm days or whenever you're in the mood for a chilled coffee treat. This popular drink is made by pouring a shot (or two) of rich espresso over a glass filled with ice, then topping it off with cold milk. The result is a smooth and creamy beverage that combines the bold flavor of espresso with the silky texture of milk, creating a perfectly balanced drink. Iced lattes can be customized with various flavors, like vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut, adding a hint of sweetness to the robust coffee notes. Whether enjoyed on a sunny patio or as a quick pick-me-up during a busy day, an iced latte offers a delightful blend of refreshment and caffeine.
Cappuccinos are known for their harmonious blend of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. Typically served in equal parts, the cappuccino offers a more balanced coffee experience than a latte, with a stronger espresso flavor that is perfectly complemented by the creamy texture of
the milk. The foam on top is often dusted with cocoa powder or cinnamon, adding an extra layer of flavor and aroma. This drink is ideal for those who enjoy a strong coffee taste with a creamy finish.
The macchiato is a simple yet flavorful coffee drink that consists of a shot of espresso “stained” or “marked” with a small amount of milk or milk foam. The term “macchiato” means “stained” or “spotted” in Italian, reflecting the drink’s minimal milk content. This drink is perfect for those who enjoy the boldness of espresso but want a hint of creaminess without the dilution of steamed milk. Variations such as the caramel macchiato add flavored syrups, creating a sweet and indulgent treat.
For those with a sweet tooth, the mocha offers a delightful fusion of coffee and chocolate. Made by combining espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate syrup or cocoa powder, the mocha is often topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings for an extra touch of decadence. This drink is perfect for coffee lovers who crave a dessert-like experience, blending the rich flavors of coffee and chocolate into one irresistible cup.

Retirement planning is a crucial aspect of financial security for everyone, but it holds particular importance for women. Women often face unique challenges that can impact their retirement readiness. By understanding these challenges and taking proactive steps, women can secure their financial future and enjoy a comfortable retirement. This article explores the importance of retirement planning for women, the specific challenges they face, and how bespoke investment portfolios can address these issues.
Women encounter several challenges in their journey toward a secure retirement. These include longer life expectancy, career breaks, and lower lifetime earnings compared to men.
Longer Life Expectancy: Women tend to live longer than men, with an average life expectancy of 73.8 years compared to 68.4 years for men. This means women need to plan for a longer retirement period, often requiring a larger retirement fund to maintain their standard of living.
Career Breaks:
Many women take career breaks for caregiving responsibilities, such as raising children or caring for elderly family members. These interruptions can lead to fewer years of earnings, reduced pension contributions, and ultimately, a smaller retirement fund.
Lower Lifetime Earnings: Despite progress in closing the gender pay gap, women still earn less than men on average. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, women earned 83 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2022. Lower lifetime earnings translate to lower savings and pension contributions, impacting women’s retirement readiness.
Bespoke Portfolios: Tailored Investments for Women
Bespoke investment portfolios can play a significant role in addressing the unique challenges women face in retirement planning. These portfolios are customized to meet individual financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizons, offering several advantages:
Diversification: A well-diversified portfolio spreads investments across various asset classes, managers, and geographies, reducing risk and enhancing potential returns. Diversified portfolios can provide a balanced approach to growth and stability.
Risk Management: Women often have different risk profiles compared to men, with a tendency to be more risk averse. Bespoke portfolios can be tailored to match an individual’s risk tolerance, ensuring that investments align with their comfort level and financial goals.
Growth Potential: Investments in private markets, such as private equity, private credit, and real estate, offer the potential for higher returns compared to traditional public markets. These asset classes can help bridge the gap created by lower lifetime earnings and career breaks, contributing to a more robust retirement fund.
Creating a solid retirement plan involves several practical steps:
1- Assess Your Financial Situation: Begin by evaluating your current financial status. This includes understanding your income, expenses, savings, and investments. Knowing where you stand financially is the first step toward effective retirement planning.
2- Set Retirement Goals: Define your retirement goals, considering factors like desired retirement age, lifestyle, and any specific needs or aspirations. Having clear goals will help you create a focused and achievable retirement plan.
3- Calculate Retirement Needs: Estimate the amount of money you will need for retirement. Consider fac-
tors such as inflation, healthcare costs, and longer life expectancy. The Family Office’s retirement calculator can provide valuable insights into your future financial needs.
4- Create a Savings and Investment Plan: Develop a savings and investment strategy tailored to your retirement goals. This should include regular contributions to retirement accounts and investments in diversified asset classes. Consider working with a financial advisor to optimize your investment strategy.
5- Monitor and Adjust Your Plan: Regularly review your retirement plan and make adjustments as needed. Life circumstances and financial markets can change, so it’s essential to stay flexible and adapt your plan accordingly.
Starting early and maintaining consistency in retirement planning are essential for securing a stable financial future. According to Abdulmohsin Al Omran, Founder and CEO of The Family Office, “The sooner you start planning for retirement, the more time your investments can grow and compound over time. Regular, strategic contributions can significantly enhance your retirement fund, ensuring financial security and peace of mind.”
Retirement planning is a vital endeavor for women, given their unique challenges and longer life expectancy. By leveraging bespoke investment portfolios, women can address these challenges and secure their financial future. Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, The Family Office aims to support and empower female investors by offering innovative solutions and personalized guidance. Contact us today to learn how we can assist you in creating a robust retirement plan that secures your financial future and supports your long-term aspirations.

Artificial intelligence has become today’s new buzzword, with AI making its presence felt in every field we turn to. Whether it is for completing our homework using our savior ChatGPT or utilizing machine learning models to predict our future, AI is revolutionizing our lives. This revolution can be seen as making human lives easier, or in other words, making us lazier. But while we reap the benefits of AI, a debate lingers: will AI take over humanity? These debates may have originated from scifi movies and comics, where we see robots taking over the world. But if you ask a computer science student like me, the answer would be an absolute no. Let me explain why by looking at what AI actually is and its capabilities.
When we say AI, we don’t just refer to human-like robots or personal assistants like Siri or Alexa. We refer to systems that can perform tasks by thinking and learning like humans. The AI that currently exists belongs to a category known as narrow AI, which is designed to do specific tasks that they are taught to. There are two other theoretical categories of AI: General AI and Super Intelligent AI. General AI refers to systems that are exactly like human beings, meaning they can talk, think, and learn like humans, with emotions and feelings. Super Intelligent AI goes a step further, where AI systems are more capable than humans in every aspect.
By Aparna Anil
Now you may be wondering, if General AI and Super Intelligent AI exist, won’t AI be able to take over humanity? Well, the fact is, neither of these types of AI exists in the present, and whether they will exist in the future remains uncertain. Many scientists claim that the chances of their discovery are minimal. If you ask me, I do not think that they could be discovered, because every AI system existing now is controlled by humans. Every code or program that AI follows is written by humans, and AI is not capable of doing anything beyond what it is told.
On the other hand, AI systems prove to be beneficial in many ways. Today, every industry is looking to integrate AI into their respective fields. AI diagnostics, autonomous vehicles, fraud detection, advanced robotics, personalized recommendations, personal assistants, and chatbots are just a few among the hundreds of thousands of AI applications. Knowing how to code can prove to be helpful as you could create AI models yourself.
I have also had the chance to work and create AI models myself. One of them was a vehicle accident control system that could detect driver fatigue and
stop the car immediately to prevent an accident and ring a buzzer to wake up the driver. This was done using a simple Arduino circuit. Another project I worked on was a Carbon Capture model that could capture atmospheric carbon dioxide to be utilized by plants for photosynthesis. The role of AI here was that it was completely automated. The device would only start working when the atmospheric pollution level was high. Along with this device, I also coded a machine learning prediction model that could predict the future level of CO2 for a year entered by the user.
So you see, AI is more of a superhero than a villain. While the idea of robots taking over the world makes for exciting movies and stories, in real life, AI is here to help us, not hurt us. Imagine having a robot friend who can do your chores, help you with homework, and even keep you safe! The possibilities are endless and amazing. So, let’s embrace the wonders of AI and use it to make our world a better and more exciting place. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be the one creating the next great AI invention!
Here’s what a Mayo Clinic expert recommends
It’s natural for parents and caregivers to be concerned about how much screen time their children are getting, especially when digital screens are everywhere, even at school. Nusheen Ameenuddin, M.D., a Mayo Clinic pediatrician in Rochester, Minnesota, shares some recommendations to make it simple for families to manage their technology use.
“The key thing that I would want all parents to know is that screens aren’t all good or all bad,” Dr. Ameenuddin says. “A lot of this depends on how you use screens.”
Dr. Ameenuddin says there’s no evidence that television shows or screen time for young kids have any benefit. Therefore, it’s best to try to avoid screen time for kids under 2 years old, with the exception of video chatting with grandparents or other relatives.
“For kids who are between 2 and 5 years of age, no more than about one hour of high-quality educational content, ideally with little to no commercial time,” she says.
For kids 5 and older, it’s a little more nuanced. “Once kids are 5 years and older, and they’re in school, we used to say no more than two hours of screen time a day of noneducational content,” Dr. Ameenuddin says. “But we understand that that’s hard to do. And
then oftentimes kids are using screens for really good reasons, for doing schoolwork. So really, what we’ve started to say is let’s make sure it is not taking the place of other important activities, whether that’s schoolwork or physical activity, and certainly sleep.”
“There is potentially a benefit for children in the preschool age with high-quality educational content. There are wonderful shows that have been around for decades that are really focused on teaching kids,” she says.
Dr. Ameenuddin says a little bit of high-quality television can help kids learn about other people and cultures.
“There was actually a study done, and as much as we talk about how we don’t want to spend a lot of time in front of screens, there is a benefit,” Dr. Ameenuddin says. “There can be diversity enhancement. When children see children of other backgrounds playing with each other, they’re actually more likely to say, when shown a group of pictures, that they might want to play with a child of a different background from what they might be used to or from their own background.”
The period before a child starts school for the first time can be an anxious time for parents. We have put together the following information as a simple guide to how you can best prepare your child for this exciting time in their lives!
Your child will really benefit from being as independent as possible when they start school. Of course teaching staff will always be on hand to help, but children feel a real sense of achievement when they can accomplish things by themselves! Examples include being able to dress and undress independently, as this will really help with PE sessions. Learning to tie shoelaces can be tricky, so provide opportunities to practise this skill and also explore different types of fastenings, for example Velcro.
Children in reception (FS2) will also have access to an outdoor space throughout the day, so being able to put their coat on and zip it up independently will really help them-as will being able to put on a pair of shoes or taking off their jumper when they get hot. It also means that they can get straight to their playing and learning without having to stop and ask an adult for help!
Another important part of being independent at school is being able to use the toilet independently, including washing and drying their hands. It will also be helpful if they are able to blow their nose on a tissue and put it in the bin.
Having lunch independently may also be new to your child. If they will be having hot dinners, practise using a knife, fork and spoon. If they are taking a packed lunch, practise opening the packets and containers of food they will be taking. Encourage them to help choose and make their lunches. Maybe they could use their new school lunchbox and water bottle when you go for a picnic in the park? This would enable them to practise opening their food and learn about their likes/dislikes and suitable items for school lunches.
Your child will also really benefit from having experienced being away from you for short periods of time, such as going to a friend’s house to play. This will really develop their confidence and independence and stand them in good stead when it comes to saying goodbye on that first morning at school.
Being able to interact appropriately with other children and share resources is a key skill that will help your child when they start school. Play dates with other children will help to promote these skills and you could arrange these with future classmates if possible. During the play date, you can model useful social phrases such as ‘my turn please’ or ‘let’s share’ and join in with pretend play to start the game off and then fade out as children get into character.
Many parents worry if their child will be able to tell the teacher if they need something or if they will make friends. Good communication skills underpin these abilities.
Your child may be starting school with identified communication difficulties, or you may have concerns that have not yet been addressed. An easy way to check out concerns is by using the ICAN ‘Progress Checker’. This is an online tool which allows parents to look at what is expected in terms of talking, listening and understanding language for their child’s age range. It’s a simple way to alleviate any unnecessary anxieties or to seek advice if needed.
We know that parents can have a huge impact on their child’s talking and listening development and the summer is a perfect time for trying out simple language boosting activities:
Your child will be given many spoken instructions throughout the school day and will need to be able to shift their attention from what they are doing to listening to what the teacher is saying.
A lovely activity to promote this is to go on a ‘listening walk’ where your child listens for all the sounds around them in the park or town centre. You could also jot down all the sounds your child notices and talk about these back at home to retell the journey based on the sounds they heard.
Classroom instructions often contain several parts for children to remember. A simple game of ‘Simon Says’ during long car journeys this summer could really help. Give your child an instruction to do, like ‘Simon says put your finger on your nose’ and see if they can follow your instruction. The game becomes more difficult as they are only supposed to follow your instructions if you start the sentence with ‘Simon says…’ Can your child listen carefully and only follow the instructions when directed? The game can be made more challenging by building up to instructions with two or three steps, for example ‘Simon says touch your nose, then clap your hands and then put on your hands on your head!’
At school, children will be expected to start extending their vocabulary, so it is a good idea to encourage your child to learn and use new words. You could play sorting games when packing a suitcase, as this is a great way to help word categorisation, which is important for vocabulary learning. Items can be sorted into different piles, such as clothing, toys and things for washing ourselves.
Outdoor ‘treasure hunts’ work well too. Collecting objects found on walks in the park or on the beach, help introduce new types of vocabulary such as describing words. Treasure can also then be used to create feely bags, where objects have to be described by the way they feel before revealing what the object is.
Being able to count verbally to at least 20 will be of great benefit to a child starting school. Practise counting up to 20, and backwards too. One to one counting can also be done incidentally throughout the day, for example counting steps as your child climbs the stairs. You can count anything, for instance how many lampposts are on the street, how many houses have a red door, how many pieces of fruit are in the bowl (and how many did we have yesterday), how many pencils fit in the pencil case, etc. You can also do this when giving things out, for example: “an ice cream for you, an ice cream for Susie and one for me – 1,2,3 ice
Reception (FS2) age children will be encouraged to use language to organise and sequence ideas and events. Summer days are perfect for creating a photo journal of activities. Your child can then organise pictures into the correct sequence and retell the story in their own way. You can model important concept words like ‘first’, ‘last’, ‘next’, ‘before’ and ‘after’, and the correct use of past, present and future tenses of verbs, which typically will not yet be fully developed.
Teachers do not expect children to know their alphabet or be able to write sentences when they start school. A good foundation in sound awareness skills such as rhyming and identifying what sound a word begins with would be helpful. Sharing songs and books is a really good way to support this. You could also say the sounds that letters make, along with their names as you come across them day-to-day.
Encourage your child to develop an interest in books and other forms of text, for example comics, postcards, labels and posters. You could visit your local library and encourage your child to choose books they would like to listen to and look at. Read with your child and discuss what you have read, for example, ask what they liked about it. Consider reading books about ‘starting school’ with your child. Use these to discuss all the fun activities they will be doing at school.
creams!” Encourage reliable one to one counting by showing your child how to point to each item as they count, or to move the items as they count so they do not count each item more than once. This will help your child understand what numbers mean. Ask them to find the same amount of different items. For example, find 3 spoons, 3 hats or 3 socks. You can also sing counting songs, many of which are available if you search for ‘number rhymes’ on the Twinkl website.
You could go on a shape hunt to see how many circles, squares, rectangles and triangles your child can find, for example square windows, circular plates, and rectangular posters. You could look
for patterns too. Talk about the shape and size of objects, e.g. big car, little car, round ball, square table, rectangular book and ask your child questions such as ‘Can you pass me the biggest box?’, or ‘Which one is the smallest shoe?’. Play with blocks and encourage your child to think about size, colour and shape. Also play with containers and ask, ‘How many socks can you fit in the box?’, ‘Which container holds the most, or the least, sand/water?’, etc.
A number hunt is a fun way to look for numerals on doors, on clocks, buses, cars, signs, at home, at the shops or on TV. You could also play ‘I spy’ but with numbers.
A Guide for Parents and Guardians…
• Use every day experiences as learning opportunities, for example take your child with you to the shops. They can learn about:
• reading and writing as you write and follow a shopping list;
• practise their listening and memory skills and extend their vocabulary by helping you to collect named items;
• learn about numbers, counting and money when helping you to pay for items;
• learn about their local environment on the way to and from the shops, etc.
• Encourage your child to help you with simple jobs around the home, for example gardening, tidying up, baking and cooking. This will help them to develop coordination and listening skills as well as independence and self-confidence.
• Explore different ways of being creative, for example:
• colouring and drawing with pens, pencils and crayons, painting;
• cutting and sticking materials together;
• building models with ‘junk’ materials like cardboard boxes or construction toys like Lego;
• exploring sounds made by instruments or ‘noise makers’ (for example rice in an empty yoghurt pot) and listening to and moving to music.
• You could invite a friend to play at your house for a short while. This will hopefully make the settling in process a little easier as they will already have a familiar face in the school or class. This will also help develop their communication and social skills.
• Remember that everything your child wears or takes into school needs to be named – this includes coats, scarves, gloves, hats, shoes and toys. Consider buying iron-on name labels as a quick way to name everything at once or use a permanent laundry marker. When naming shoes, also help your child to know which shoe goes on to which foot by drawing half a picture (like a smiley face) into the left shoe and the other half of the picture into the right shoe – when the shoes are placed correctly the picture will look complete!
• Ask your child to help name their uniform/clothes and school equipment like drinks bottle and lunch box. This will aid name recognition and help them to identify which things are theirs!
• Most schools offer fruit as a snack during the day. Encourage your child to try a range of different fruit to explore their likes and dislikes and also practise peeling bananas and oranges.
• Encourage your child to be active. Help them to explore climbing equipment in a local park, play running games, practise riding a bike or a scooter and play simple games with a ball or frisbee.
• It may help your child to choose a small toy that they would like to take with them to school (ensure that it is named). This can act as a comfort for your child and also encourage them to talk to others. Please check school rules before agreeing that this can happen.
• Lots of schools offer a home visit which allows staff to visit you and your child in your own home setting. This enables your child to meet their new teacher in a setting where they feel more secure and relaxed. Don’t worry about these meetings – it is just a chance for staff to begin to get to know your child, collect any important information about your child and pass on any information about the school. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and pass on any information about your child. You might find it helpful to prepare some questions in advance.
You can also develop an interest in reading by reading notices and labels when away from home and postcards or greetings cards from family members or friends.
‘Name Treasure Hunts’ can be a fun way of getting your child to recognise their name. Write your child’s name on pieces of paper and hide them around the house. Encourage your child to find them all. Other names (or words) can then be introduced to encourage your child to look carefully at each letter of their name.
A good foundation to being able to write is to develop your child’s fine motor skills. This is because good fine motor skills enable a child to hold a pencil firmly as they are writing. There are many resources that could support the development of this skill on the Twinkl website, just search for ‘fine motor skills’. Threading is also a great way to develop fine motor skills, whether it is with beads or buttons, or making necklaces out of dried pasta. Weaving wool around a cardboard template or strips of card through each other are also other simple activities that you could do at home. As is playing with handheld construction toys, small toys and cutting and sticking activities.
If your child is ready and interested in writing, encourage them to write simple words or sentences. Initially, begin by focusing on your child’s name as this will also help with reading and name recognition. Encourage them to write their name into greetings cards, on to artwork they have done or on to letters .

The start of a new school year can be a stressful time for both parents and children. As parents, managing your own anxiety is crucial to avoid transferring your fears onto your child.
Children are highly perceptive and can pick up on their parents’ emotions, so maintaining a calm and positive demeanor can significantly impact their own adjustment to school.
Here are ten effective tips to manage anxiety during the first week of school:
Recognize your own anxiety and take steps to address it before it affects your child. It’s
normal to feel nervous about the new school year, but acknowledging these feelings can help you manage them more effectively. Practice self-care techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or journaling to cope with your emotions.
*Tip*: Consider talking to a friend, therapist, or support group to share your concerns and gain perspective. This
can help you feel more grounded and less likely to project your anxiety onto your child.
2. Create a Positive Narrative
Frame the start of the school year in a positive light when talking to your child. Emphasize the exciting aspects of school, such as meeting new friends, engaging in fun activities, and learning new things. Your enthusiasm can help set a positive tone and alleviate some of your child’s fears.
*Tip*: Use encouraging language and focus on the opportunities that school presents. For example, say, “I’m excited to hear about your new teacher and what fun things you’ll do this year!”
3. Establish a Consistent Routine
A consistent routine can provide a sense of stability and predictability for both you and your child. Establish a daily schedule that includes regular wake-up times, meal times, and bedtimes. Routines help reduce anxiety by creating a sense of normalcy.
*Tip*: Involve your child in creating the routine, so they feel more in control and prepared. Display the schedule in a visible place, like the refrigerator, to reinforce consistency.
4.Prepare Together
Preparation can help ease anxiety for both parents and children. Spend time together organizing school supplies, setting up a homework station, and discussing what to expect on the first day. This collaborative approach helps both you and your child feel more prepared and less anxious.
*Tip*: Create a checklist of items to prepare and go through it together. Include things like packing lunch, laying out clothes, and gathering school supplies.
Transitions can be challenging, espe-
cially if you’re feeling anxious. Practice calm and reassuring goodbyes to help your child feel more secure. Avoid lingering or showing signs of worry as this can make the departure more difficult for both of you.
Wanting to go with your child to the class and hang around because they are upset can potentially do more harm than good by unintentionally communicating to your child that it is unsafe to be there and that you have to stay. Be guided by the staff and teachers at your child’s school as to which approach is best.
*Tip*: Establish a quick and positive goodbye routine, such as a special hug or a cheerful phrase. Keep your farewell brief and confident to make the transition smoother.
Taking care of yourself is crucial in managing anxiety. Make time for activities that help you relax and recharge, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time with friends. When you’re feeling balanced, you’re better equipped to support your child.
*Tip*: Schedule regular self-care activities into your week. Even small acts of self-care, like taking a short walk or reading a book, can make a big difference in managing stress.
Open communication with your child is key to understanding their feelings and addressing any concerns. Encourage them to express their emotions and listen actively without judgment. Validate their feelings and offer reassurance.
*Tip*: Use open-ended questions like, “How are you feeling about starting school?” and provide a supportive environment for your child to share their thoughts.
Modeling positive behavior and resilience can help your child feel more confident and less anxious. Demonstrate a positive attitude towards challenges and setbacks, and show them how to handle difficulties with a constructive mindset.
*Tip*: Share stories of times when you overcame challenges and emphasize the positive outcomes. This can help your child see that difficulties are a normal part of life and can be managed effectively.
If your anxiety feels overwhelming or persists, don’t hesitate to seek support from professionals. Consulting a therapist or counselor can provide valuable strategies for managing anxiety and help you cope more effectively.
*Tip*: Look for local support groups or online communities where you can connect with other parents. Sharing experiences and receiving support from others in similar situations can be reassuring and helpful.
Managing your own anxiety during the first week of school is essential for creating a positive experience for your child. By acknowledging your feelings, preparing ahead, and maintaining a positive and calm demeanor, you can help your child navigate the transition with confidence and ease.
Remember, a balanced approach to self-care, open communication, and flexibility will not only benefit your well-being but also support your child’s successful adjustment to the new school year.

As the beginning of a new academic year approaches, many students are preparing to transition from high school to universities overseas.
This phase offers an opportunity to forge new friendships, mature, and transform their passions into career paths. Nevertheless, it can also be a source of anxiety as, this could be the first time, students leave their homes and familiar support networks, encounter new individuals, and adjust to a different educational setting. Balancing this transition can be sometimes draining and stressful, so St. George’s Uni-
versity (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies has compiled the below tips to help students cope with these changes.
Maintain Connections: Students often miss their high school community when they begin university. It’s crucial to stay in touch with their social circles, family, and friends. Setting up WhatsApp groups before leaving can help former classmates keep in contact and stay updated with each other’s lives. Equally important is staying connected to oneself by acknowledging and understanding personal emotions. Journaling about experiences and feelings can help in feeling better.
Get organised: Being organised can make the transition to university life smoother. Planning ahead, such as organising an agenda for the first week on campus, can help students settle in and manage their new responsibilities effectively. Extend this structured
approach to other aspects of life, ensuring a balanced schedule between study and relaxation.
Avoid Comparisons: Students might be tempted to compare themselves to others who seem to handle the transition better. However, this can harm their confidence and well-being. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, so it’s vital to focus on personal goals and progress. Maintaining a healthy perspective can help manage pre-university anxieties.
Connect with future classmates: It’s beneficial for students to connect with peers who are also attending the same university. This can enhance their overall experience and ease the transition into a new academic environment. Building a network of friends before arriving can provide a sense of belonging and support, making the journey less stressful.
Learn relaxation techniques: Learning how to relax is essential for managing stress, both before and during university. Techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation, muscle relaxation exercises, deep breathing, and guided imagery can help students stay calm and focused, especially during exam periods and other challenging times.
Set Realistic Expectations:
Accept that it’s normal to face challenges and feel homesick initially. Setting realistic expectations about your transition from high school to university life can help manage disappointments and keep motivation levels high.
Engage in campus activity: Join as many clubs, societies, and participate in events to meet new people, expand your horizons and discover new interests. Engaging in extracurricular activities is a proven way to build your own social circle and feel part of a community.
Seek help and guidance when needed: It’s imperative to get out of the
mindset that seeking help is a sign of weakness. In fact, the opposite is true so don’t hesitate to reach out to counsellors or mental health professionals if feeling overwhelmed with all the new experiences university presents.
To sum up, some students might find the transition from high school to university life a challenging period, especially if it involves travelling abroad. However, there are ways in which students can cope with the anticipation of making new friends, academic pressures, and leaving familiar support systems behind.
If students still find themselves looking for guidance, students can check if their university has specialised departments offering support to international students that may be missing home.
