Middle East’s first passenger-carrying drone trials take place in Al Ain

NEWS The Source FAMILY 8

Abu Dhabi has continued its efforts to shape the future of smart and sustainable mobility, providing an inspiring model globally by nurturing strategic partnerships, attracting industry-leading companies and innovators from around the world, providing facilities and incentives, and launching initiatives and programmes to explore and develop smart and autonomous sustainable mobility solutions across the sustainable mobility sector, contributing to development of an integrated ecosystem across land, air and sea transportation.

In line with Abu Dhabi’s vision to consolidate its leading position as a friendly and enabling city for the smart mobility sector, the inaugural Abu Dhabi Mobility Week, held in Abu Dhabi from 24 April until 1 May 2024, witnessed the introduction of the first passenger-carrying drone trials in the Middle East.

Multi Level Group (MLG), a pioneering provider of advanced automation and digital transformation solutions, in association with Abu Dhabi Mobility, presented an exhibition of its cutting-edge technology, including two test flights. The first featured a five-seater drone capable of travelling for more than 25km, with payload up to 350kg, while the second involved a small-sized drone, capable of carrying two passengers and travelling for up to 35km for a duration of approximately 20 minutes.

This milestone represents a significant addition to Abu

Dhabi’s track record of achievements in this crucial sector, as it continues to consolidate its position as a global hub for transportation solutions and smart and autonomous vehicles, utilising its advanced infrastructure in the field of artificial intelligence technologies and smart and autonomous vehicles.

This position is underpinned by the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industries (SAVI) cluster at Masdar City, which contributes to advancing progress and innovation in this field, further consolidating the emirate’s leading position as a friendly and enabling city for the smart and sustainable transportation sector.

Held at the Advanced Mobility Hub in collaboration with Emirates Falcons Aviation, the event unveiled MLG’s diverse array of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (AAVs), showcasing their versatility and innovation in the realm of aviation.

The highlight of the event was the debut flight of a groundbreaking passenger-carrying drone, marking a historic moment as the first-ever eVTOL flying event in Al Ain City.

This milestone was accompanied by an unprecedented achievement as the five-seater drone embarked on a record-setting flight duration of 40 minutes, covering an expansive area spanning 123km, which is the longest recorded drone flight. As the eVTOL soared through the skies, it displayed the UAE’s name, creating a spectacle that captured the imagination of onlookers.

The event featured a comprehen-

sive lineup of MLG’s autonomous aerial vehicles, including eVTOLs and surveillance drone systems, with demo flights that underscored the sophistication and reliability of the technology.

From inter and intra-city passenger eVTOL taxis to light and heavy cargo logistics eVTOLs, attendees witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of MLG’s innovative solutions in revolutionising transportation and logistics.

Celebrated luminaries from various segments of society, esteemed dignitaries, government officials, and distinguished defence personnel were present.

Mohamed Hamad Al Dhaheri, a Board Member of MLG, made history by boarding the demo flight of the fully autonomous intra-city eVTOL, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the Middle East.

Al Dhahiri said: “Being part of this historic moment is truly exhilarating. The seamless integration of technology and aviation represents a significant leap forward for our nation, and as an Emirati I am proud to be a part of it.”

Abu Dhabi-based MLG is a leading innovative and advanced company in the aviation industry, with a shared vision of utilising its innovative solutions to contribute to shaping the future of mobility through advanced technology and collaborative partnerships.

As part of Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) Single-Use Plastic Policy which was launched in 2020, a ban on a series of Styrofoam products in the emirate will become effective from 1 June 2024.

Styrofoam is a type of plastic called expanded polystyrene and it has a range of uses. As part of the ban, Abu Dhabi, is targeting avoidable, single-use consumer products.

Specifically, the banned products comprise cups, lids, plates and beverage containers (including their caps and lids) made of expanded polystyrene. In addition, food container receptacles for products that are intended for immediate consumption, either on the spot or for takeaway, or containers that have a product that is typically consumed from the receptacle and is ready to be consumed without any further preparation such as cooking, boiling or heating, will also be prohibited.

Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development to ban single-use Styrofoam products from 1 June 2024

The products that will be exempt from the ban include those not designed for single consumer use such as big storage boxes and coolers and trays used for meat, fruit, readymade dairy products and other food items for retail sale. Also, all other products designed for medical uses are also exempted.

Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: “As an extension of the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy which we initiated in 2020, and following the extremely successful ban on single-use plastic bags in 2022 and the introduction of the Single-Use Plastic Bottle Return Scheme in 2023, effective from June 1 2024 there will be a ban on some Styrofoam products in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. This move will help reduce litter in the environment as Styrofoam in particular breaks easily into microplastics that can enter the food chain and be harmful to human health as well as affect biodiversity.

“We are striving to make life easy for consumers while maintaining the balance of conserving the environment at the same time, therefore, for the ban we have only selected items that are avoidable single-use plastics and have clear and sustainable alternatives. We will also provide support to government and private sector entities to facilitate the shift towards reusable solutions.”

She elaborated: “The success story for the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy is that the consumption of 310 million single-use plastic bags has been avoided up to April 2024, and the number of bags distributed at retailers’ cash counters has reduced up to 95 per cent. In weight, this is more than 2,000 tonnes of single use plastic bags have been avoided. Similarly, more than 1,000 tonnes of bottles, equivalent to 67 million bottles, have been collected last year”.

Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri said: “Such great results would not have been possible without consumer and private sector active involvement.”

His Excellency Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) reaffirmed ADDED’s commitment to support environment-friendly strategies to ensure providing best possible conditions for doing business and preserving the environment. His Excellency Al Blooshi highlighted the significant role played by ADDED in raising awareness among commercial outlets and industrial facilities in the emirate to comply with the single-use plastic policy, reflecting the proactive approach to achieve the policy’s objectives and enabling the private sector’s transition to environment-friendly alternatives.

ADDED has shared the circular on Styrofoam ban with more than 50,000 commercial establishments and 80 industrial facilities involved in plastic manufacturing. It also launched an awareness programme, in coordination with EAD targeting commercial and industrial establishments. The programme aimed to introduce the ban policy and present the targeted Styrofoam products. A list of excluded products was also shared during the programme’s workshops as well as the mechanism of reconciling the conditions of economic establishments and switching to locally manufactured alternatives. ADDED is set to conduct field inspection campaigns on sales outlets and industrial establishments to ensure the implementation of the ban across Abu Dhabi according to the specified timetable, starting from 1 June 2024.

Young Hands and Voices Concert (6th

edition)

Showcases the next generation of musical talent

EDUCATION

This month, the city of Al Ain hosted an incredible musical extravaganza, the Young Hands and Voices Concert, where young musicians from around the UAE came together to perform their hearts out to an eager crowd. This segment of the Al Ain Music Festival is a much-anticipated event amongst the community of Al Ain.

Over the years, this concert’s popularity quickly expanded beyond the local community, attracting attendees and participants from across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Ras Al Khaimah. Yaremi explained that the selection process for the concert is based on auditions where the performer submits a video for consideration. “This year we had a recorded number of over 100 audition submissions and 50 performances were selected for the final event from Uptown International School, Bloom World Academy, Diyafah International School, Safa Community School, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Gems Our own English High School, Repton School Abu Dhabi, Dubai College, Brighton College Al Ain, and the hosting school, Al Ain British Academy” she recalls.

The program showcased a diverse range of musical genres, moving beyond classical music to include musical theatre, pop, and choral pieces. A hard-working team of teachers were part of the event: Yaima Cruz Castillo, Dunia Gonzalez Romeo, Cleydis Tena Figeroa, Rosa Maria Aguila Mendoza, Maridalia Fernandez, Aylin Aguila, Idorka Bracho, Ilya Netkach, Chiara De Paula and Sarah Martinez Rebollo, work tirelessly to bring this concert to fruition, supporting their pupils every step of the way.

Yaima Castillo, one of the teachers who have participated since the first edition explained that she looks forward to this

concert every year. “I prepare my students for the auditions and root for them to take part because these opportunities are unique and unforgettable”. This is the consensus among the amazing music teachers who give up their weekend to be part of this event. Dunia Gonzalez another music teacher who has committed to participate every year said “I took part for the first time when I was teaching here in Al Ain, and then I moved to Uptown International School in Dubai. I made sure that my students in Dubai took part in this concert as well, as I see the value of these events and how exciting these opportunities are for young performers.”

The Young Hands and Voices Concert was born in 2016 out of the desire of Yaremi Ledesma Alvarez, a music teacher from Cuba, to create a dedicated space for young performers in Al Ain. After graduating from Cuba’s Music and Art School system, she was used to performing in theatres, auditoriums, music festivals and events outside the school during her forming years. Yaremi explained that “This is where the true performing skills are forged, the confidence is nurtured and where the music student discovers their performance identity in front of the audience.” After relocating to the UAE in 2005 and working within the school music system, she noticed that musical activities were predominantly confined to schools. Recitals and endof-year concerts took place, but there was a lack of opportunities for children to perform publicly, even during the Al Ain Music Fes-

tival (AAMF). Recognising this gap, she initiated the first Young Hands and Voices Concert in 2016 at the Al Qattara Art Centre.

The Young Hands and Voices Concert quickly became a staple of the AAMF, continuing annually and growing in popularity until the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the tradition for 2 years. The concert venues have varied over the years: in 2017, it was held at the Al Ain British Academy Auditorium; in 2018, at La Dolce Vita; in 2019, at Danat Resort; in 2023, at Zayed Central Library; and in 2024, it returned to the Al Ain British Academy. The Young Hands and Voices Concert has consistently been the most attended event of the AAMF, celebrating and nurturing young musical talent in the community. Yaremi also acknowledged the important contributions by La Dolce Vita as the AAMF organiser to make these events possible. Music centers like LDV play a vital role in supporting the growth of young talent.

The event was another successful night of music led by children and their dedicated music teachers, highlighting the broad talents of young performers from all over the nation. Looking back to the concert and talking about the future ones, Yaremi says: “My wish for the young performer’s community is that they follow their passion in music and arts and take these opportunities to grow their confidence and refine their craft. Every minute spent learning an instrument or nurturing a singing voice is all worth it in the end”

Balancing Act: Navigating the Complex Challenges of Fatherhood & Career

We all know that being a parent is a full-time job, yet many of us work a full-time position on top of managing our family responsibilities and it can often feel impossible to find the right balance between work commitments and parenting obligations. It is expected that some days you may find that you have more time for your children, while on other days you may have to focus all your energies to your work.

Balancing the complex challenges of fatherhood and a career requires a deliberate and thoughtful approach. Before embarking on the journey of fatherhood, it’s important to carefully consider various aspects of your life and future responsibilities. For example, it’s important to think about the time that you will have available to dedicate to fatherhood and your new family. Reflect on your career and its compatibility with your new role as a father, as it may require adjustments in terms of work-life balance. Furthermore, consider your relationship with your partner and how parenthood will impact it. It is vital to think about your support system, including family and friends, who can offer guidance and assistance along the way.

Open and honest communication with your partner is crucial for making shared decisions and maintaining a harmonious home and work life. We have seen people changing their careers when they entered parenthood. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, after becoming a father stepped down from his role as CEO of Amazon to focus on other ventures. This decision allowed him to spend more time with his family and pursue his interests. Comedian and actor Jim Carrey scaled back his acting career after becoming a father to his daughter. He began to focus more on personal growth, spirituality, and art, becoming a wellknown painter and illustrator. One of the most accomplished athletes, the Olympic swimmer

Michael Phelps retired from competitive swimming after becoming a father. Try to spend some time defining your priorities in both your family life and your career. Understanding what matters most to you will help you make decisions and allocate your time and energy accordingly.

Communicate with your employer or team about your new role as a father and your need for a work-life balance. Discuss expectations, responsibilities, and any adjustments to your schedule or workload. Establish clear boundaries between work and family time. When you’re with your family, be fully present and engaged. When you’re at work, focus on your tasks without distractions. Focus on the quality of your interactions with your children rather than the quantity of time spent can. Make the time you have count by being fully engaged and creating meaningful moments.

Open and honest communication with your partner is crucial. Discuss your work commitments and family needs regularly. Make decisions together and be flexible when necessary. Communication does play a pivotal role in everyday life especially when making joint decisions, whether in personal relationships, families, or workplaces. It serves as the bridge that connects different perspectives and ensures that you and your partner both are involved in the decision-making process.

Develop strong time management skills. Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and time blocking to schedule your work tasks and family responsibilities. Make sure to allocate quality time for your family and stick to your schedule as much as possible. Share parenting and household responsibilities with your partner. Delegating tasks and working together as a team can alleviate some of the burdens associated with parenthood. Building a support network of family, friends, or professionals who can help you when needed. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance with childcare or

other responsibilities when circumstances require it.

Recognize that the balance between fatherhood and your career may need to evolve as your children grow and your career advances. Be flexible and willing to adjust your approach as needed.

Self-care is also vital for maintaining balance. Try to time for exercise, relaxation, and activities you enjoy. A healthy, well-rested parent is better equipped to handle both family and work challenges.

Becoming a father is a profound and rewarding experience, but it’s essential to be prepared both mentally and practically to provide the best possible foundation for your child’s future. Remember that perfection is not the goal; instead, aim for a healthy and harmonious integration of these important aspects of your life.

Psychological Hunger

Identifying and Addressing Psychological Unmet Needs

WELLBEING
The Source FAMILY 20

Have you ever felt an aching loneliness while engaged in conversation or found yourself inexplicably furious over a minor mistake like a wrong food order? These intense reactions are typically disproportionate to the event itself, but they are neither invalid nor reflective of a person’s character. Instead, these responses, or “triggers,” signal deeper, unmet psychological needs that urge exploration rather than judgement.

In recent findings, Dr. Chasity, a Licensed Psychologist and Clinical Director at Thrive Wellbeing Centre and professor at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), provides an insightful exploration into the often-overlooked concept of psychological unmet needs. With years of expertise in clinical psychology, Dr. Chasity reveals what constitutes these unmet needs and how they manifest in daily life, leading to exaggerated emotional responses in seemingly ordinary situations.

Understanding Psychological Unmet Needs

The concept of unmet needs is pervasive across various psychological theories, often referred to as attachment injuries, unhealed wounds, or basic psychological needs. It may also be referred to as part of a greater hierarchy of needs, inner child wounds, shadow, maladaptive needs (or core beliefs), or unconscious material. These needs represent deep-seated psychological wounds that, although invisible, significantly impact an individual’s behaviour, relationships, and overall mental health.

What causes unmet needs?

Dr.Chasity insightfully notes that unmet needs, or “psychological hunger,” encompass more than just the basic necessities for survival like food, shelter, and clothing. From childhood, individuals also require emotional nurturing—such as love, acceptance, and the freedom to express feelings and make mistakes.

The failure to meet these needs during childhood can result in long-term emotional and psychological distress. “These needs are foundational, and their absence can lead to long-standing psychological wounds that affect all aspects of life, including relationships and work,” - Dr. Chasity.

What are those needs? The Therapeutic Approach

Schema Therapy provides a valuable framework for understanding these unmet needs through the lens of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS). Developed in response to chronic and harmful/neglectful early childhood conditions, EMS are defence coping mechanisms that, while initially protective, often become maladaptive “survival skills” later in life. Dr. Chasity emphasises the importance of recognising and addressing these schemas as they manifest in various forms, including:

Safe attachments and connection

We need to feel a sense of safety, stability, care, validation, and worthiness from a loving, predictable, and consistent attachment figure. Without this need met, we can experience deep agony of rejection, abandonment, defectiveness, shame, and non-belonging.

Autonomy

We need to feel supported as we grow into our identity (ability to explore and to have guidance) and a sense of being good at something.

Without this need met, we can feel dependent, incompetent, and preoccupied with failure or illness.

Realistic Limits

We need to learn that not every day is a party. Actions have consequences; being responsible, short-term sacrifices for long-term gains, and building frustration tolerance are part of becoming a healthy, well-adjusted adult.

Without this need met, we can feel entitled and superior to others, and we can struggle with the self-control and self-discipline necessary to meet worthwhile goals.

Freedom of expression of needs and emotions

Not every need can be met, and not every emotion can be tended to, but this need is about the basic ability to feel a range of emotions without shaming or being told to stop it.

When this need is not met, we may resort to suppressing, masking, or sacrificing our needs and emotions in a way that is unhealthy and leaves us emotionally dependent on the approval or recognition of others.

Spontaneity and playfulness

If you have ever seen a child play, you will notice how unstructured it is—it is led by what the child notices in the environment.

Without this need met, we can put a tremendous amount of pressure on ourselves and others (perfectionism) and experience constant guilt for not being productive; we can feel like we are undeserving of good things.

The Path to Healing: Recognising When the Unmet Need is Activated Awareness and recognising when and how these unmet needs trigger disproportionate emotional reactions are the first steps towards healing. Dr. Chasity advises those experiencing such symptoms to observe their patterns and consider their emotional intensity, which can serve as a gateway to self-discovery and recovery. As Dr.Chasity asserts, “Acknowledging these needs allows us to begin the healing process, ultimately leading to a healthier, more fulfilling life.”

Smart Strategies for Healthier Grocery Shopping in the UAE

Choosing a healthier lifestyle begins with our grocery shopping habits. In 2020, a survey revealed that 84% of UAE residents actively tried to limit their consumption of artificial additives, a figure significantly higher than the global average of 75%. Moreover, nearly 60% of UAE consumers stated that the naturalness of a product influenced their grocery-buying decisions, the highest percentage among all surveyed markets.

These findings underscore a growing trend towards healthier food choices and sustainability among UAE residents. With a multitude of options available in UAE supermarkets, making informed decisions is crucial to supporting your health and well-being.

Abu Dhabi 360 spoke with Dr. Mona Mobarak, a Certified Nutritionist, to gather expert advice on how to shop smarter and make healthier choices while grocery shopping in the UAE.

Plan Your Meals Ahead:

Planning your meals in advance is one of the most effective strategies for healthier grocery shopping. Before heading to the supermarket, take some time to plan your meals for the week. This not only helps you make healthier choices but also saves you time and money.

Dr. Mobarak advises, “Creating a weekly meal plan allows you to make a list of the ingredients you need, ensuring that you only buy what you will use. This helps reduce food waste and prevents you from making impulsive, unhealthy purchases.”

Shop the Perimeter:

When navigating the aisles of the supermarket, focus on shopping the perimeter where fresh produce, lean proteins, and dairy products are usually located. This is where you’ll find the healthiest and most nutritious options.

According to Dr. Mona Mobarak, “Shopping the perimeter of the grocery store ensures that you’re filling your cart with fresh, whole foods. These foods are often less processed and contain fewer additives, making them healthier choices for you and your family.”

Read Labels Carefully:

Reading food labels is essential for making informed decisions about the products you buy. Pay close attention to the ingredients list and nutritional information, including the amount of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.

“In the UAE, food labels are required to include both English and Arabic information,” says Dr. Mobarak. “Look for products with minimal added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats. Opt for whole foods and ingredients whose names you can pronounce.”

Choose Local and Seasonal Produce:

Supporting local farmers and choosing seasonal produce is not only good for the environment but also for your health. Local fruits and vegetables are often fresher and more nutritious than imported options.

Dr. Mona Mobarak recommends, “When possible, choose locally grown fruits and vegetables. These are typically harvested at peak ripeness and have a higher nutrient content compared to imported produce that may have traveled long distances.”

Stick to a Budget:

Eating healthily doesn’t have to break the bank. With a bit of planning and mindfulness, you can make healthier choices without overspending. Set a budget before heading to the supermarket and stick to it.

“One way to save money on groceries is to buy in bulk and store items properly,” advises Dr. Mobarak. “You can also look for discounts and promotions on healthy staples like whole grains, legumes, and frozen fruits and vegetables.”

By following these smart strategies for healthier grocery shopping, you can make positive changes to your diet and lifestyle, one shopping trip at a time. With the right mindset and a little bit of planning, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you.

Don’t just handout social media access to kids first educate them on its perils, says author at SCRF 2024

In today’s digital age, the integration of technology into our lives is inescapable. Addressing the dilemmas parents face with increasing screen time, author Tasnim Omram conducted a workshop at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF 2024) on Monday.

Speaking to children, she explored ways to balance the allure of the virtual world with the richness of real life.

“Although digital technologies form a significant part of our existence, complete restriction for children isn’t the solution,” Tasnim said during her interaction with girls aged between 10 and 13. “Always cherish real-life experiences over digital ones. Like all things, technology has its benefits and drawbacks, and it’s crucial to distinguish between them,” she reminded parents

and children attending her session.

When discussing the appropriate age for children to engage with popular social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, Tasnim argued that parents should assess their child’s maturity before allowing access. “Digital platforms can be incredibly beneficial if used correctly. Parents must educate their children on both the opportunities and perils of the internet. Children should only create social media profiles when they fully understand the risks involved and know how to safeguard themselves,” explained Omram, a children’s book author and mother of three.

Tasnim has opted not to give her children smartphones yet, believing they are not ready. “They each have personal iPads for educational purposes at school and

home. They’re also allowed limited leisure time on these devices, but they do not have social media accounts yet,” she said.

The rise in screen time among Generation Alpha, those born between 2010 and 2024, continues to spark debate and research. Tasnim often discusses with parents that it is not just the quantity but the quality of screen time that is important. “It’s less about the number of hours and more about how children use their online time constructively. Parents need to embrace and understand new technologies to guide their children effectively,” she concluded.

The 15th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival promises a diverse range of sessions, events, and activities suited for all ages. To discover more about the festival’s daily offerings, visit www. scrf.ae.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi Ranks in

Top 5 Preferred Global Work Destinations Reveals BCG Study

Boston Consulting Group (BCG), in collaboration with The Network and The Stepstone Group, has released a pivotal report, “Decoding Global Talent 2024,” highlighting the UAE’s position in the global talent arena. The study unravels the shifting dynamics of the international workforce, emphasizing the UAE’s strengthening appeal for professionals worldwide. The comprehensive survey, part of a BCG series tracing talent trends since 2014, integrates views from over 150,000 professionals in 188 countries.

According to recent data, the UAE has made significant progress in attractiveness, now ranking 14th. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the respondents’ 3rd and 4th most preferred cities. In a global survey, an impressive 73% of respondents cited the quality of job opportunities as the main reason for being drawn to the UAE. At the same time, income, tax, and cost of living considerations ranked 62% and quality of life at 61%. These elements collectively position the UAE as a top destination for professionals. Additionally, these factors resonate with the broader motivations for working abroad, which include safety, stability, and inclusivity. In April 2022, the UAE Cabinet introduced new visa schemes to attract global talent, expanding opportunities in burgeoning sectors like private equity, venture capital, and AI.

“The UAE continues to carve a reputation as a fertile ground for career growth, drawing talents, especially from the Middle East and

beyond,” said Maya El Hachem, Managing Director and Partner, UAE BCG Office Lead. “The report presents a UAE that is not just keeping pace but setting the pace in the global talent marketplace. The strategic positioning of the Emirates, accentuated by its safety and progressive outlook, makes it a burgeoning hotspot for the global workforce. In addition, the confluence of exceptional job quality, competitive incomes, and an enriching lifestyle makes the UAE a beacon for ambitious professionals. The UAE’s advancement in global ranks further substantiates its commitment to cultivating an environment thriving on diversity and opportunity.”

Employment Beyond Borders: A Dive into Relocation Trends

Despite fluctuating global circumstances, the appeal of international relocation for career advancement remains robust. The overall willingness to move abroad for work in the UAE has seen an uptick from 55% in 2018 to 73% in 2023. However, the percentage of those actively seeking opportunities abroad has remained consistent, hovering around 21-23%.

An in-depth look at the UAE’s workforce reveals sector-specific dynamics influencing global mobility trends. The workforce showcased a significant willingness to work abroad across various job titles in engineering and technical roles, which show the highest willingness for mobility at 91%,

followed by health and medicine at 82%, financial services at 73%, and marketing and sales at 63%.

Financial motivations were the most common reason for relocation among 67% of respondents in the UAE. Career considerations and better overall quality of life were also important factors, with 53% and 56% of respondents citing them as drivers for relocation, respectively. Other reasons for relocation included having a concrete job offer, seeking personal growth and cultural experience, wanting more exciting or challenging work, better educational or training opportunities, a better social system and health-

PLACES

care, political stability, a more inclusive society, environmental factors, and reuniting with family and friends.

Recent findings reveal that 49% of UAE respondents prefer longterm international assignments for work, significantly higher than the global average of 29%. Reflecting the UAE workforce’s growing international outlook, their expectations for employment support also align closely with global trends. Notably, 72% of UAE respondents prioritize housing, compared to 79% globally, and 86% value visa assistance, slightly above the global rate of 78%. Other key expectations for UAE workers include relocation support, favored by 63% locally versus 69% global-

ly; language support and training, with 48% UAE respondents compared to 54% worldwide; and legal financial advice, important to 41% in the UAE and 43% internationally.

The inclination of foreign employers towards remote work is another facet of the evolving labor landscape, which is seeing a marked rise both within the UAE and worldwide. From 2020 to 2023, the willingness to engage in remote work has increased in the UAE from 50% to 56% and worldwide from 57% to 66%, highlighting a shift towards more flexible working arrangements. Notably, the drive for offshore opportunities from the UAE experiences an uptick, mirroring sentiments favoring

flexible, cross-border work arrangements.

“Global talent mobility is at a critical juncture, where evolving preferences and emerging opportunities are reshaping traditional pathways,” stated Dr. Leila Hoteit, Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG, Global lead for Education, Employment and Welfare. “The boundaries of global talent mobility are expanding, driven by a complex interplay of personal ambition, sector-specific demands, and evolving work modalities. Understanding these dynamics will help stakeholders navigate the future of work, harnessing the full potential of global talent mobility for mutual growth and development.”

Exploring Prof John Burt’s book ‘A Natural History

of the

Emirates’ at the Yas SeaWorld® & Rescue Center’s Science Talk Series

The Yas SeaWorld® Research & Rescue Center, the largest dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation and return center in the region, recently hosted a special Science Talk featuring the renowned Prof John Burt, Associate Professor of Biology and Program Head for Environmental Studies at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and an editor of the reference book ‘A Natural History of the Emirates’, published in open access by SpringerNature this year.

Claudia Steuber, Chair of the Emirates Natural History Group in Abu Dhabi, kicked off the event with a quick introduction at 6:30pm before Prof Burt took the floor and dived deeper into his book which provides an overview of the evolution of the natural history movement in the Emirates, and discussing how the physical setting of the UAE – it’s geography, climate and marine setting – structure life across this young nation. Towards the end of the evening, the floor was open for Q&As.

Dr. Elise Marquis, Director of the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center said, “We are very pleased to host Prof John Burt as he brings his years of valuable experience and insights on stage for this monthly Science Talk, in line with our efforts to make marine life education more accessible to the public of all ages.”

The Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center boasts a cutting-edge marine ecology lab, uniquely equipped to fine-tune and control all environmental conditions to understand the impacts of different stressors on the organisms’ physiology. The Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center is collaborating with Prof Burt’s NYUAD team, focusing on coral ecology in the UAE.

Corals globally face heat stress due to rising temperatures, but Gulf corals exhibit remarkable resilience. Understanding the Gulf corals’ heat tolerance is crucial for predicting the future of reefs worldwide. As such, Prof Burt and his team have been monitoring

Abu Dhabi corals’ recovery from last summer’s bleaching event, caused by high temperatures.

An innovative experimental study is also taking place in the Center and undergoing a two-month experiment mimicking Gulf summer conditions and measuring photosynthesis activity of the corals. The findings, to be published in top scientific journals, aim to aid global coral protection efforts.

The Center hosts three tours per week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30pm to 5:30pm guided by members of the education team where guests can enjoy in-depth orientations of the Center’s facilities and public offerings.
