Kids Are Waiting For Mentors! Kids need someone to stand in their corner, to be there when they face challenges, and to inspire them. Twenty years of data tell us how mentors ignite the potential and make a long term difference in the lives of kids and families. Kids with mentors do better in school, achieve higher levels of education, and have stronger relationships than those without. What family doesn’t benefit from have and extra support person!

“Bigs” and “Littles” are matched based on common interests. Those can range from mountain bike riding, creating science projects, or watching football; each match decides what they enjoy doing together. The same studies tell us that whatever the activity, it’s the relationship with the positive, caring, adult role model who makes the difference. Becoming a Big Brother or a Big Sister takes only a few hours a month, and yet has such

a big impact on the child, the family and on YOU! If you are looking to contribute in a significant way to someone’s life now and empower them to create a better future, and enjoy the rewards of knowing you are supporting a child and family, consider becoming a Big now. For more information, visit www.bbbsoc.org, or call 541-312-6047 Help us end the wait!

Ignite Potential:

Become a Big Brother or Big Sister

Ashton Eaton

Ashton Eaton Ashton Eaton is a hero, two time Olympic champion, and world record holder. In his younger years, key adults played a large role in his life, giving him a first-hand understanding of the power mentors have to ignite potential. Asking nothing in return, Ashton agreed to become a spokesman for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon. His goal is to encourage others to become mentors: to defend, ignite, and empower potential. Thank you, Ashton, for your support. It means a great deal to us, and to the Littles you have helped us match with Bigs. 2 | Central Oregon Give Guide 2019

MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY MISSION STATEMENT MountainStar Family Relief Nursery’s mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect through community support and therapeutic services that help vulnerable children and families succeed. We are the only program in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook Counties providing therapeutic classrooms, parenting education services, and family support targeted at protecting children ages 0-5 who are at significant risk for abuse and neglect. MountainStar works directly with Central Oregon families living in crisis. The infants and toddlers we serve live in households with an average of 13 risk factors, including extreme poverty, substance abuse, mental health issues, and a history of family violence. 75% of the families we serve live below the federal poverty level and 100% of children are considered at-risk of abuse/neglect. For young children, extreme trauma is debilitating, causing an inability to create healthy bonds with family members and others they encounter. We often see developmental delays and an inability to understand and process emotions. MountainStar’s therapeutic classrooms provide a unique environment that helps vulnerable children reach age appropriate benchmarks for social and emotional learning while growing their resilience. In 2018, MountainStar successfully kept 98% of children in our program safe from confirmed cases of abuse and neglect. By partnering with parents, we keep kids safe.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON MISSION STATEMENT For over 20 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington has provided a “home away from home” for families with children under the age of 22 who need medical attention. At our Bend Ronald McDonald House we serve many families with a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit who isn’t just quite ready to come home from the hospital right away. We also serve many families from our rural communities throughout Central, Eastern and Southern Oregon who are traveling to the Bend area for medical consultations, treatment and attention. Our Bend House has six family suites along with a beautiful outdoor area and playground, entertainment room, play room, a fully stocked kitchen and pantry, home cooked meals in the evening, all residing in a beautiful timber framed home truly representing the love of our community who built this house. Our organization is built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child. A child’s medical treatment and access to care should not be restricted based on proximity to home, and families should not have to worry about where they can afford to stay during treatment, or where they will be able to get their next meal. At RMHC, we believe that when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of their family being physically with them, is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed. The Bend Ronald McDonald House is a place that provides the opportunity, along with compassionate hospitality, for the entire family to heal. As our communities grow, the demand for medical services and treatment grows, the need for lodging close to the hospitals and medical providers grows, as does our occupancy. Please consider supporting the Bend Ronald McDonald House. This profile is sponsored by

Helping Human Trafficking Victims Become Survivors Kids become homeless for many reasons, often through no fault of their own. Living in a car or on the street, their futures are sacrificed for immediate needs. School becomes impossible when trying to find food and safety. Seeing youth in jeopardy in our community, J Bar J Youth Services responded by launching Cascade Youth and Family Center’s (CYFC) first services 30 years ago. Over the years, CYFC has grown and now includes their family mediation, emergency shelter, street outreach, transitional and independent living, scholarships, and more. As human trafficking has increased nationwide, it’s touched our community as well.

In an effort to help victims, J Bar J Youth Services began offering case management services through CYFC. They also helped form the Deschutes County Commercially Sexually Exploited Children Response Team, the group responsible for responding to cases of human trafficking in Central Oregon. This team is a collaboration of law enforcement and other agencies working together to coordinate and leverage resources to provide a comprehensive approach to child sex trafficking and services to victims and survivors. This year, J Bar J Youth Services has moved their victims of human trafficking program out from under the umbrella of CYFC, launching

it as their newest stand-alone program, the at: project (anti-trafficking.) Their work includes case management for victims of both sex and labor human trafficking, from youth through adult. At: project also coordinates the work of the CSEC Response team. While there are other non-profits in Central Oregon fighting human trafficking, both training potential points of contact to recognize the signs of trafficking and raising general awareness, a direct-service non-profit like the at: project was needed to work with victims as they rebuild their lives. BRIGHTSIDE ANIMAL CENTER MISSION STATEMENT Every sunrise brings challenges to be met. BrightSide Animal Center faces each new day with optimism, focusing on the possibilities for every animal in our care. BrightSide needs your help. Adoption fees do not cover the costs required to save the animals. BrightSide is a high-save shelter dedicated to providing sheltering, placement and prevention services to reduce animal homelessness and unnecessary euthanasia. We believe that every animal that enters through our back receiving door deserves the chance to leave through our front door with a secure future. We’re proud to have a save rate that’s one of the highest in the country. Over 1,500 dogs and cats benefitted from BrightSide programs last year. Animals arrive at BrightSide as strays, surrenders or confiscations and leave as well-loved found or adopted pets. Further serving the Deschutes County area, BrightSide offers a pet food bank along with warm dog coats for the winter and partners with the County under an Emergency Preparedness Plan. If you, too, believe in the high-save mission, that each animal is worth saving and deserves our best efforts, please contribute. At BrightSide, every dollar is optimized through valiant volunteer efforts and community partnerships. Volunteers spend RUFFly sixteen hours per day walking the dogs providing exercise and socialization. Cats enjoy the same amount of PURRfectly deserved indoor attention. This totals over 10,000 hours of loving care of shelter animals per year complimenting the excellent BrightSide staff. And, as needed, volunteers open their homes to animals requiring special care such as kitten or puppy litters and medical situations. We thank our current business sponsors and welcome new friends! BrightSide has an impressive number of people helping, but needs generous donations to fulfill the high-save mission.

HOSPICE OF REDMOND MISSION STATEMENT During the month of November, hospices across America recognize National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Hospice, by definition, is a team-oriented approach to providing specialized care for people facing a life-limiting illness or injury. It includes expert medical care, pain management and emotional support for patients and their families. More simply, hospice care supports living one’s life to the fullest with dignity regardless of how much time remains. In a recent national survey, most respondents agreed that expertise in keeping a terminally-ill patient as comfortable and as pain-free as possible is the single most important service to consider when caring for a loved one and the end-of-life experience. This is the essence of hospice care, this is what we do at Hospice of Redmond, every day, our family of nurses, home health aides, chaplains, bereavement coordinators, social workers, all at your service supporting you and your family’s wishes for nearly 40 years throughout Central Oregon.

WHAT YOUR DONATION DOES: Any donation that is made, no matter how small or big, goes to support our Hospice operations, which in turn allows us to provide quality care for families throughout Central Oregon and continue to support families who do not have the means to pay for hospice care through insurance. Donations also help to support our annual Camp Sunrise for kids throughout Central Oregon, kids who have lost a loved one and are struggling with grief and how to express their emotions with that loss. The stories of these children, so young and facing what seem to be insurmountable challenges, are heartbreaking. We work with their families to provide a safe space for them each summer at our Camp, free of charge, where they are around other children who have experienced similar traumatic events in their young lives, and where they can learn the skills needed to begin healing. MOSAIC MEDICAL MISSION STATEMENT As a nonprofit community health center organization, the mission of Mosaic Medical is to improve the health and well-being of the individuals, families and communities we serve. Our Mobile Community Clinic (MCC) is a 27-year-old converted RV that provides quality, accessible healthcare to more than 700 at-risk youth and individuals experiencing homelessness. The MCC travels throughout the region, offering care on a walk-in basis at locations where people are already accessing services, such as cold weather shelters and food banks. These patients have an increased risk for bronchitis, pneumonia, sunburn, skin infections, frostbite and other issues. And due to a lack of transportation, many patients are not able to make it to one of our other 14 regional clinics for care. We are asking the community to help us raise the final funds needed to purchase a new, reliable mobile clinic. Our current mobile clinic has reached the end of its service life and it cannot be relied upon to safely travel the many miles required around the region. Inclement winter weather often forces us to cancel visits during the time of year when access to care is needed the most. Help us keep individuals healthy throughout the year, no matter the weather! Your support makes a difference.

WHAT YOUR DONATIONS CAN DO $100 Stocks the new mobile clinic with hygiene kits, socks, hand warmers and sunscreen $500 Ensures a working air conditioner and heater for the new mobile clinic $1,000 Helps purchase a specialized vaccination refrigerator for the new mobile clinic $5,000 Assists with the purchased of all-weather heavy duty tires and snow chains

NEIGHBORIMPACT MISSION STATEMENT NeighborImpact is charged with fighting poverty in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Our mission: “Supporting people, strengthening communities.” Our purpose: assess local needs and tackle the causes of poverty. To address basic needs, we confront hunger, homelessness, eviction prevention and emergency heating costs. Beyond emergencies, we focus on factors that prevent poverty: childcare and early childhood education services; home weatherization; money management, savings and homeownership; and low interest lending. We confront short- and long-term needs through a suite of programs that move nearly 50,000 households a year toward prosperity. As a non-profit organization, NeighborImpact changes someone’s life for the better every single day. As individuals, we have to look for the right opportunities to make real change in the lives of others. We offer you this chance to do just that: to do good, so that others can do well.
