WELCOME TO BEND, OREGON’S SUMMER PLAYGROUND!
Let’s get ready to rock the summer
Summers in Bend have always been epic.
Outdoor concerts, float trips on the Deschutes River, patio beers, mountain bike rides, Ballons Over Bend, Art in the High Desert, Elks games, pool days at Campfire – life’s pretty darn good here on the High Desert in the summer months.
And this year, the party kicks off earlier than ever before.
The Hayden Homes Amphitheater is set to host more than 50 concerts this year, including a May 14 dance party from NYC’s finest, LCD Soundsystem. Yes, you can catch a show at the amphitheater and still ski at Mt. Bachelor for two more weeks.
Just as awesome is the Pole Pedal Paddle and Riley Green concert doubleheader on May 18. Start the day by competing in Central Oregon’s iconic multi-sport race from Bachelor to Bend and end it at the amphitheater with one of country music’s rising stars.
And that’s just May!
The Sisters Rodeo and Juneteenth in Drake Park are set for June; Bend’s annual Fourth of July parade is in July; the Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo and Little Woody Barrel Aged Beer Festival highlight August; and more than a dozen shows are slated for the Hayden Homes Amphitheater in September.
Best of all, the good times in Bend roll right into the fall. The Bend Brewfest returns to the Hayden Homes Amphitheater October 4-5, the same weekend as downtown Bend’s annual Fall Festival.
October is also the month of the BendFilm Festival (October 10-13) which coincides with the best time of the year to hit the more than 600 miles of singletrack mountain bike trails in Central Oregon.
So cheers to everyone in town, visitors and locals alike, who’s here this summer experiencing everything Bend has to offer. Have fun, be kind, and please leave this special place in the heart of Oregon a little better than you found it!

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Show starts at 7 p.m.
General Admission and Reserved Seat Options
When LCD Soundsystem debuted in 2002 with the hilarious, hipster-spoofing single “Losing My Edge,” it set up the band and their label DFA, as the coolest things around. Driven by the vision of James Murphy, the band built on the disco-fied dance floor impact of the song, releasing timeless singles like “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” and “Drunk Girls,” as well as albums like 2007’s “Sound of Silver” that put the band firmly at the head of the neo-disco class. They continue to fill clubs and recently cranked out “New Body Rhumba,” a dancefloor-filling single that has the same sharp edge as ever.

Rolling Stone hailed Riley Green’s musical perspective as, “Drinks-in-the-air Nineties Country at an Alabama vs. Auburn tailgate,” and that is just the type of energy fans have come to expect from him. Raised on the sounds of traditional Country, Bluegrass and Southern Gospel music, the Jacksonville, AL native learned the spirit of songwriting and performing at a young age while spending time with his grandfather, Buford Green, who ran the Golden Saw Music Hall.

MAREN MORRIS
WITH BETTY WHO
FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2024
Doors open at 5 p.m. Show starts at 6:30 p.m.
General Admission
After breaking into the scene with hit single “My Church,” Maren Morris helped push country music into the 21st century. Morris’ music was grounded in country — she started as a professional songwriter in Nashville — but she also incorporated elements of pop, R&B, hip-hop, and rock, creating a distinctive, stylish hybrid that had wide appeal outside her chosen genre. This versatility was evident on her hit singles “80s Mercedes” and “Rich”. Morris maintained strong country roots, as evidenced by her pivotal part in the supergroup The Highwomen - with Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby. She began the next decade with several collaborations and solo singles like “Better Than We Found It” and “Circles Around This Town,” and after her Bend debut in 2022 we had but one humble request for Maren, please come back!

They continue to explore sounds both old and new, foreign and familiar, and keep bringing audiences to their feet night after night. The journey that began in a Volvo Station Wagon at the Canadian border in the fall of 1998 continues to unfold in ways unimaginable. Until that vein is tapped, they’ll keep on digging. And that’ll likely take a good long while.

To him, ever since, it’s never been about “fitting a sound or fitting a moment. I just don’t feel any of that. Maybe in the past,” he concedes. “But we don’t take anything for granted. That’s a healthy thing.” At their live shows this creative passion is palpable. Bush returns this summer with very special guests Jerry Cantrell, Candlebox and Tim Montana!

“There has always been this sense in our band that if you put your heads down and focus on doing it the best that you can — playing the shows the best that you can, playing your instruments the best that you can,” Erik Berry told Rolling Stone, “then good things will come from that.” That good result has been found in their recent album “Alpenglow,” a record that paired Trampled by Turtles with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy as producer. The Wilco frontman took the band under his creative wing, setting them up in Wilco’s legendary studio and gear storage facility in Chicago, the Loft, to write and record what became “Alpenglow”. Now we’re counting down the days until Trampled By Turtles bring their signature frenetic bluegrass jams back to Bend.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2024
Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Show starts at 6 p.m.
General Admission and Reserved Seat Options
A purposefully enigmatic performer, Orville Peck’s music fuses elements of goth, ethereal alternative and indie rock with grand-scale vocals, in addition to iconography that honors classic country music from the ‘50s and ‘60s. His voice conveys its own sense of classic mystery: Peck croons with a deep, soulful sound that’s been compared to Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak. The resulting sound takes the listener down the dusty rose-colored desert highways; through a world where worn out gamblers, road-dogs and lovesick hustlers drift in and out of his masked gaze.

BEND BREWFEST RETURNS!
Oregon’s largest craft beer festival to take over amphitheater October 4-5
“The Bend Brewfest is back home,” said Beau Eastes, the Old Mill District’s Marketing Director. “We’re confident the festival will be better than ever while staying true to what local craft beer enthusiasts have come to expect and enjoy.”
The 2024 Bend Brewfest will showcase 200-plus beers from more than 85 of the West Coast’s top craft breweries. Mug and token packages are currently on sale at BendBrewfest.com. Beer lovers can also buy day-of packages on October 4 and 5.
Founded in 2002 and held annually at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, the
hugely popular craft beer and cider festival was last staged at the venue in 2019. The festival was canceled in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event returned in 2022 at a new location on the east side of the Deschutes River, along the river trail behind the Old Mill District shops, while the amphitheater underwent renovations.

That event and the new location were a success, but in early 2023 organizers decided to postpone the brewfest until it could return to the larger amphitheater venue.
“The Bend Brewfest is a beloved tradition in our community and it’s been sorely missed,” said Kris Ann Palacios, assistant general manager for the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. “Like the rest of town, we’ve felt the void created by its absence and are thrilled to bring back Central Oregon’s largest and longestrunning craft beer festival.”
The Bend Brewfest showcases the most creative and innovative craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest.
In years past, the event has attracted more than 40,000 fans and included more than 70 vendors serving up 200 beers, ciders, wines and other fermented beverages like hard seltzers.
Palacios hopes the brewfest’s new October dates will make the festival easier for craft beer aficionados to attend with the event moved outside of Bend’s busier summer months.
The Bend Brewfest will also continue its long tradition of philanthropy by donating to local organizations that have huge positive impacts on our community. Since the festival began more than 20 years ago, it’s generated more than $100,000 for local non-profits, including the Latino Community Association, Northwest Youth Discovery, Bend Fire Community Assistance Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, NeighborImpact, the Deschutes River Conservancy, and Out Central Oregon.
“We hope this announcement gets some delicious, creative juices flowing at breweries all over the Pacific Northwest,” Eastes said. “Come October, they’re going to have a huge, thirsty crowd eagerly waiting to see what they’ve come up with. We cannot wait.”

AMPHITHEATER RACKS UP SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS
Venue earns multiple national and regional honors for greening efforts
You see them at every concert over the summer at Hayden Homes Amphitheater, members of the Green Team roaming the venue picking up trash and manning receptacles to help you figure out your waste.
What’s recyclable? What’s compostable? Where’s the food waste go? And what’s just plain ol’ trash?
Beyond that, the team spends hours dumping the waste into kiddie pools and sorting it all out to make sure waste goes to the right place with the ultimate goal of reducing the amount of trash taken to local landfills.
The process works. And their hard work has been rewarded.
The Hayden Homes Amphitheater earned three sustainability honors from Live Nation’s end-of-season awards for its outdoor amphitheaters - 52 in total. Additionally, the venue was named Visit Central Oregon’s 2023 Sustainability Award winner.
HHA won first place nationally for Live Nation’s “Highest Scrap Value Returned”essentially, most aluminum cans recycled - as well as the top “Innovation Award” which celebrates venues “thinking outside the box” to improve waste diversion performance.
That award celebrated HHA’s “Trashy Golden Ticket” idea, which featured golden tickets thrown away or hidden around the amphitheater - stuck to a stray can, for instance - or among the garbage bins at every concert this season. Green Team members who found them were entered into a raffle for prizes.
The program was so successful, Live Nation intends to duplicate it at its venues across the country in future years to drive motivation and team morale among other Green Teams.
HHA’s overall recycling program also placed third nationally for “Highest Diversion Percentage” by diverting 78% of its waste away from local landfills.
Regionally, the amphitheater was awarded for its diversion rates and the inclusion of nearly 300 new bike parking spots this summer.
“The amount of effort we put into sustainability is important for a lot of reasons,” said Marney Smith, general manager for the Hayden Homes Amphitheater and Old Mill District. “To be able to tread lightly and know we’re good stewards to the environment and know that we’re creating a sustainable music environment is more important than any award.”
Smith pointed out that the venue has focused on sustainability since it opened in 2002. Nearly 10 years ago it committed to eliminating single-use plastic bottles, an industry decision well ahead of its time.
Since then, the venue’s sustainability office and growing Green Team has worked diligently to reduce HHA’s environmental impact with water fill stations, compostable cups and utensils, cashless points of payment, an increase in bike racks, and visible and separate receptacles for recycling, compost and trash.
Manning the waste receptacles at the concerts each night saves time and makes the sustainability efforts more enjoyable, pointed out.
“If we didn’t do that, we could spend eight hours the next day sorting through it all after each show, but it wouldn’t be as efficient,” she said. “If you’re going to spend an eight-hour shift sorting recycling, it’s better to do it while listening to great music, right?”
The Green Team’s efforts are also a boon to local high schools.
Of the Green Team’s 130plus members, roughly 115 were under the age of 18, and for every hour worked, the venue donates at least $1 back to that student’s school. They haven’t tallied the 2023 numbers just yet, but in 2022 the venue was able to donate more than $28,000 back to Central Oregon schools.
“Having high school students involved in the process has been enormously helpful,” Smith said. “Their expectations of sustainability are ingrained in how they do everything in their life. There’s a lot of pride in the job they’re doing and they work really hard to help us get to our sustainability goals.”
Overall, the venue has more than 800 employees throughout the season working various front and back of the house positions.

They proudly provide brave and talented independent filmmakers exposure, opportunity and just as important, cash to fund their projects. The creation of film without the burden of box office concerns is a luxury BendFilm cultivates for filmmakers.
The Bend Film Festival is also an economic driver for Bend during the slower fall season. Just stand on Wall Street during the festival and watch the enthused expressions on fellow Bendite’s and out-of-towners’ faces.

Whitey Morgan & the 78s

In 2005, Morgan began assembling a group of sympathetic Motor City musicians to become his 78’s, these being guitarists Jeremy “Leroy” Biltz and Benny James, bassist Jeremy Mackinder, and drummer Mike “Pops” Popovich.
VOLCANIC THEATRE PUB
Ezra Bell Sunday, June 30
Ezra Bell was founded by Benjamin Wuamett and friends late in the summer of 2013. It was warm enough to sit on the porch into the evening and learn a couple of songs. A lap drum, a banjo and an out-oftune guitar. Since then the cast of characters involved have moved around a bit. Having just finished their eighth studio album, they’ll wander around a bit and see if anyone likes it.
The Soul Rebels Friday, August 2
Brass sensation The Soul Rebels started with an idea - to expand upon the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop, jazz and rock all within the style of a modernized and contemporary brass band. The eight-member collective frequently appear on major record label releases with star artists including G-Eazy’s single ‘When You’re Gone” featuring Lil Wayne, Dave East and Nas’ “Godfather 4”, and Big Freedia and Icona Pop’s “Pipe That”.

THE BELFRY
Sarah Shook & the Disarmers Wednesday, July 17
It’s obvious listening to Sarah Shook and the Disarmers’ clear-eyed, biting, and unafraid songs that integrity is the most important thing to the country-punk outfit. “A lot of artists are in this industry for fame, recognition, and money but those things don’t mean anything to me,” says bandleader River Shook. “Songwriting is it for me. It’s the only real healthy coping mechanism I’ve ever had. It’s life-saving.” On their resonant fourth album “Revelations,” produced by Shook, the deft storytelling documents regular people getting by and keeping on, all presented without filter or pretension.

RESTAURANTS & BEVIES
M’S BAKERY COMING THIS FALL
Local bakery set to open in the former Jimmy John’s space
M’s Bakery, a local owner-operator bakery cafe from husband-and-wife Dario Muciño and Macy Davis, is set to open in the Old Mill District this fall.
Focusing on natural fermented breads with organic flours and local ingredients, M’s Bakery will make its home right in the heart of the Old Mill District, across from Anthropologie and next to Avalon Salon & Spa. M’s Bakery goods are currently available fresh and daily at Jackson’s Corner.
“We’ll have a variety of fresh artisanal breads and pastries daily,” says Macy, who handles the marketing and PR for the business while Dario is the creative genius in the kitchen. “Sourdough country loaves, focaccias, baguettes, croissants as well as seasonal items. You’ll find a blend of diverse breakfast and lunch offerings sourced with local ingredients and products. We’re also excited to bring our Mexican heritage with us by sharing a collection of favorite chocolates, coffee and wines from Mexico. We really prioritize community, so we’ll also be hosting monthly baking workshops that will include a variety of classes for adults and kids.”
Born and raised in Mexico City, Dario earned a culinary degree in Querétaro before working in Toronto, Canada and eventually the Four Seasons Troon North in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he and Macy met.
The couple and their daughter Maya moved to Bend last summer with the goal of opening their own bakery after falling in love with the state of Oregon.
“We’re so excited to be opening in the Old Mill District because it feels like the heart of the city and a unique hub for the community,” Macy adds. “As we build out, we want to curate a special space for all our friends to gather and enjoy. Being close to the river is always a plus!”
M’s Bakery, which also does wholesale baking for clients around Central Oregon, will be open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch.
“With all products being made and baked in the Old Mill District you will see our friendly staff who are passionate about their craft, creating breads and pastries throughout the day.” Macy adds. “Come say hello and introduce yourself, we can’t wait to meet you!”
FAMILY-FRIENDLY TAPHOUSE NOW OPEN IN THE OMD
Mill Works Pub reimagines a classic Bend dining experience
Mill Works Pub, a new take on the classic, casual Bend pub experience, is now open in the Old Mill District.
Mill Works began welcoming guests in March, replacing Boxwood Kitchen on the north end of district. Boxwood was known for an upscale, yet casual lunch and dinner menu with a nod to southern comfort foods created by executive chef Eric Rud.
But Rud’s wife and restaurant partner, Riane Rud, said demographics and demand for the niche dining experience Boxwood offered had changed over the last five or six years. Oh, and the couple welcomed a new baby boy 15 months ago. Funny how having kids often leads to parents rethinking a lot of things.
“We just got to thinking that the places we like to go now are so approachable and casual and you know what you’re going to get,” Riane said. “So we thoughtwhat if we just had a clean slate What would we create and do differently?”
The answer is Mill Works Pub where the Ruds hope to become more than just another local eatery, but a gathering place where delicious food meets the warmth of community.
The pub features a new menu, of course, but also an entirely new vibe inside where patrons will be surrounded by memories of Bend’s unique past. You’ll find old photographs sourced from the Deschutes Historical Museum, vintage newspapers, antique crosscut saws.
Additionally, Bend company Chalked Creative created a gorgeous mural that showcases the brewing process and features some iconic Central Oregon locales. And yes, you’ll be able to watch big games on the pub’s new TVs.
As for the menu, Mill Works features a lot of starters
and appetizers as well as sandwiches made from scratch. Oh, and handcut fries.
“Not your average burger,” Riane Rud said. “We’re excited to have a robust menu where we think pretty much everyone will find dozens of things they’ll really like.”
You’ll find, among other offerings, Baja fish tacos, pastrami pretzel sliders, an open-face prime rib sandwich, popcorn shrimp and Eric’s version of a Cobb salad.
Mill Works is extremely kid friendly, with fun water reveal pads for kiddos and an elevated kids’ menu. They hope to incorporate wooden Montessori table-top play stations in the future.
“It’ll be meals you’re used to seeing on a kids’ menu, but made by a chef,” she said. “Our fish sticks won’t be coming out of the freezer. It’s the same fish we’ll be using in our fish tacos. Real good, quality meals.”
Mill Works Pub also showcases Oregon beers and wines and a fun cocktail list with spin-offs of some of your favorite classics.
“We hope the community embraces our ideas and our concepts,” Riane said. “It was fun going
back to the drawing board and we’re excited to open our doors. Nervous and excited.”

OMD HAPPY HOUR HIGHLIGHTS
The District shines during the best part of the day
Centrally located in Bend, the Old Mill District is the perfect spot to take a load off after a full day of adventuring (or after a particularly long work week, or on a random Tuesday for no reason at all.)
There’s nothing more welcoming than Greg’s Grill on the Deschutes where Happy Hour is every hour! That’s right, enjoy special food and drink prices all day long at one of the district’s original restaurants. Have a seat at the bar or in the lounge and choose from $6 well drinks and select wines. The Happy Hour food menu includes sesame seared tuna, baked brie and more. The ribeye sliders come with red onion and blue cheese and pair perfectly with a $4 draft Rainier beer and a game on one of the three huge TVs behind the bar. On Tuesday nights, enjoy live music at Greg’s Grill from 6 to 8 pm. Greg’s is also the premier spot to take in one of the 50 or so shows each summer across the river at Hayden Homes Amphitheater. Patio seating is available first-come, first-served, additional “concert fee” may be added to your bill so check in with your server first.
Looking to get exotic on your visit to Bend? Rapa Nui Tiki Lounge will transport you to an indoor Pacific paradise where you can indulge in unique concoctions like the Viking Fog Cutter, Sidewinder’s Fang or traditional favorites like a Mai Tai or Blue Hawaiian. Coming with a group? Dive into a shareable Scorpion Bowl or Chilled Monkey Brains.
Lady Bird Cultural Society offers an upscale option that harkens a dinner and drinks experience from days gone by. They offer varying Happy Hour specials on their Prohibition-era cocktails during the summer months and feature a unique menu that includes charred octopus, wood-roasted aged duck, and castiron sea scallops. Lady Bird’s fun mocktail menu is worth a try as well. The “Fins Up” features zero proof mezcal, pineapple, coconut and luxardo cherry. A “nottoo-sweet” treat for sure.
Speaking of summer, find the perfect end to your Bend adventures with a margarita from Hola! Nouveau Mexican-Peruvian Cuisine. For years, Hola! has been a local’s favorite with its Peruvian and Mexican-inspired menu and the kind of finely crafted margs and mojitos you’ll be telling friends about. Happy Hour happens MondayFriday from 3 to 5 pm and you’ll find $4 beers, $3 off all appetizers, including nachos, Portobello quesadillas and ceviche Mexicano.
Anthony’s at The Old Mill District is Pacific Northwest dining to the core, with fresh seafood and local produce, wines, beers and more. Anthony’s has an extensive Happy Hour menu available from 3 to 5:30 pm and includes $7 draft beers from Bend’s Deschutes, GoodLife and Van Henion breweries. You’ll find $7.50 glasses of wine, and $8.50 specialty cocktails like a Moscow Mule or Aperol Spritz. The Happy Hour menu also includes Anthony’s award-winning clam chowder, crab-stuffed mushrooms, Hawaiian ahi poke, Northwest Manila clams and more.
For the wine lovers Va Piano Vineyards Wine & Champagne Bar in the Old Mill District offers a “locals” deal on Mondays: $2 off glasses of wine or bubbles. The Walla Walla-based winery’s tasting room is a relaxing spot to unwind with a flight of delicious varieties and you can catch live local music on Wednesday nights during the colder months.
FEEDING MY FRIENDS COOKBOOK
Your guide to easy and elegant ways to treat your friends and family
Food and community have been at the forefront of Trish Smith’s life.
This past winter, Trish, a longtime Bendite and one of the co-owners of William Smith Properties, released “Feeding My Friends,” her long-awaited cookbook built upon decades of hosting and cooking for friends and family.
The book – it’s available at Kara’s Kitchenware, Budd + Finn and the Ticket Mill in the Old Mill District as well as at Newport Market and Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe - has been a runaway success and is now in its second printing.
“Feeding My Friends” offers up more than 200 tried-and-true recipes, and gives an overview of Bend’s culinary history, with colorful stories about the Pine Tavern, Central Oregon Community’s College’s Culinary Institute, and some of the more notable chefs and restauranteurs in Central Oregon.
Trish moved to Bend in 1970 with her husband, Bill Smith, the founder of William Smith Properties and the Old Mill District. She played a major role in Bend’s evolution from a sleepy mill town to a family-friendly tourism destination as she supported Bill and the development of the Old Mill District, often through one of her expertly curated dinner events.
“I did once tell Bill, he’s the only guy I know whose entire business success is based on his wife’s cooking,” joked Don Cobleigh, one of Bill and Trish’s longtime friends from Bill’s time at Stanford Graduate School of Business, at Bill’s memorial service in 2023.
“Feeding My Friends” Cookbook
WHERE TO BUY:
• Kara’s Kitchenware
• Budd + Finn
• Ticket Mill
• New port Market
• Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe
Trish grew up in Washington’s Yakima Valley, where her family embraced the access to fresh produce, as well as milk and eggs from area farms and ranches.
• Online at OldMillDistrict.com
“My mother and my grandmother were each superb chefs, making the most of the bounty available to them,” Trish says.
“I helped in the kitchen, but mainly washing dishes and cleaning up,” Trish says about her humble start in the culinary world. “I could make a mean tuna sandwich and tomato soup from a can. But my mother treated us to Sunday fried chicken dinners,
homemade French cream puffs, and lemon pie with mile-high meringue after ice skating. Those early memories are the genesis for the book.”
Trish spent the early years of her career as an elementary school teacher before embarking on five decades of volunteer service to state and community organizations. She has served as vice chair of both the Oregon Public Broadcasting and Oregon Health and Sciences University boards, and on the boards of the Gonzaga University, Oregon Community Foundation, Oregon Historical Society, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and Portland Art Museum, amongst others.
PATRICIA SMITH Your Guide to Easy and Elegant Ways to Treat Your Family and FriendsPAELLA VALENCIA
This is classic paella at its best. Much of the preparation can be done ahead of time, and you can finish the dish just before serving. Play some Spanish guitar music on Pandora, pour some great tempranillo and you’ll enjoy an imaginary trip to Spain.
Serves: 14 to 16
INGREDIENTS
• 3 cloves fresh garlic, peeled
• ½ C. chopped parsley
¼ C. sliced almonds
• 6-8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed of fat, cut into bite sized pieces
• 2-3 T. olive oil
• 1 tsp. oregano
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper
• 2 C. frozen peas
• 1 lb. chorizo, skin removed
2 lbs. medium shrimp (I like frozen shrimp that are shelled, without tails because they are easier to eat.)
• 6+ cups good chicken stock
2 generous pinches saffron
• 1 medium sweet onion, diced
• 1 leek, white part only, chopped
1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
• 1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and diced
• 2 (15 oz.) cans diced tomatoes, drained
½ C. dry white wine
• 1 T. smoked Spanish paprika
2 C. frozen peas
• 3 C. bomba or other paella rice
• pimento stuffed olives (garnish)
DIRECTIONS
In a food processor, grind the garlic, then add the almonds and parsley and set aside.
Toss the chicken with the olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 about 25 minutes, until done. Remove from oven and let cool.
Cut chorizo slices on the diagonal. Saute the chorizo in a pan until heated and just beginning to color around the edges. Add to the chicken tray. (You can also use Louisiana Hot Link sausages, which are easier to find than chorizo. I actually prefer them.)
Quickly sauté the shrimp (I like using a hot wok) in oil until just barely done, about 3-5 minutes. Set aside. (You can also use butter if you prefer
the taste.) Add to the tray. Add the frozen peas to the tray as well.
Place the stock in a saucepan, add saffron, bring to a simmer and remove from heat.
In a large paella pan over medium heat, sauté the onion and leek until soft but not browned. Add the diced bell peppers. When soft, add the drained tomatoes and wine. When the wine has been absorbed, add paprika and rice. Stir to coat. Add stock, a little at a time like making risotto, stir and simmer for 5 minutes.
Fold in the parsley mixture and simmer another 5 minutes, adding stock as needed. Keep adding stock and stirring, while tasting the rice, as you would do for a risotto. You want the rice to absorb the liquid and be done but not mushy. It will take about 20 minutes.
Fold in the chicken, chorizo, shrimp and peas and simmer another 5 minutes. Arrange the shrimp on top.
Garnish the paella with sliced pimento stuffed olives if desired and serve.
CAPONATA
Caponata is an Italian version of the French ratatouille. Especially popular in Sicily, there are as many recipes as there are Italian grandmothers. Serve it as a side dish with grilled meat or chicken, or as an appetizer on good bread. Caponata keeps beautifully, travels well, and is best served at room temperature or only slightly warm.
SUMMER VEGETABLES
A huge plate of grilled vegetables is often a centerpiece of an Italian trattoria’s antipasto spread. These colorful, grilled veggies are healthy, complement any meal and are quick and delicious. They can be prepped ahead of time and grilled just before serving. What isn’t perfect about that?
Serves: 8 to 10
INGREDIENTS
Vegetables
You have a fun choice here which subtly changes the dish. You can chop the vegetables into large pieces, especially appropriate if you want to serve the dish as a vegetable side, along with grilled chicken, meat or fish. Chop the veggies into small pieces if you plan to serve it as an appetizer, on a cracker or a thin slice of warm bread. I also like to serve individual servings of cold caponata, each topped with toasted pine nuts and a small sprig of fresh parsley, along with a basket of warm baguette, thinly sliced, so people can make their own appetizer.
Serves: 4 to 6
INGREDIENTS
1 C. olive oil
• 1 ½ lb. eggplant, peeled and cut into half inch cubes
• 2 large red peppers, diced
2 large onions, diced
• 2 (or more) cloves fresh garlic, minced
• 1 (28 oz.) can finely diced tomatoes with their juice
• ⅓ C. red wine vinegar
• 2 T. sugar
2 T. capers
• 2 T. tomato paste
• 2 tsp. salt
½ C. chopped fresh parsley
• ½ C. pimiento-stuffed green olives, rinsed and thickly sliced
• ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper
2 tsp. crumbled dried basil
• ½ C. pine nuts, toasted
DIRECTIONS
Combine the olive oil, eggplant, red peppers, onions, garlic and tomatoes in a large pot. Cook, stirring often, over medium high heat for about 20-30 minutes, until just tender. Do not brown the onions.
Combine the red wine vinegar, sugar, capers, tomato paste, salt, parsley, green olives, pepper and basil in a small bowl and add to the vegetables. Stir and simmer for 15 minutes, covered. Add pine nuts and serve warm, not hot, at room temperature, or cold. May be refrigerated for up to 3 weeks.
Caponata can be served on bruschetta as well as a sauce for pasta, which makes for a wonderful, light summer dinner. Try it using spaghetti or even fusilli.
2 large thin zucchini
• 2 medium yellow squash
• 2 Japanese eggplants assorted bell peppers, red, yellow and orange
• 1 sweet onion, like Walla Walla
• crimini mushrooms
Vinaigrette
• 3 T. white balsamic vinegar (or red wine vinegar)
2 T. extra virgin olive oil
• kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
• 1-2 cloves fresh garlic, minced assorted minced herbs, like fresh thyme, rosemary, flat leaf parsley, basil and oregano
DIRECTIONS
Prepare your vegetables by trimming the ends and slicing the zucchini, eggplant and yellow squash diagonally, into flat slices about ⅓ inch thick.
Prepare the bell peppers by slicing off the bottoms and making a flat cut on each of the 4 sides, to end up with 4 flat slices and 1 round end piece.
Trim the ends, cut in half and peel the onion. Make ½ inch slices from each half.
Trip the stems of the mushrooms and wipe them clean.
Brush all the vegetables with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. You can season individual veggies separately, by sprinkling the zucchini with oregano, for example. Use your favorite herbs as you wish. Cook on a very hot grill pan until grill marks appear. Turn the veggies and repeat.
Combine the dressing ingredients in a glass measuring cup, whisk to emulsify and drizzle over the veggies just before serving, topping the platter with some of the fresh herbs.
Put the grilled veggies on a large platter and drizzle with vinaigrette.
Note: Add any other seasonal veggies that appeal to you, like fresh asparagus, other kinds of squash, red onions, green onions and even endive and radicchio, cut in half.

COMMUNITY
DESCHUTES TRAIL COALITION
Confluence of recreation, conservation and connection
The Old Mill District recently had the pleasure of meeting Jana Johnson, Executive Director, and Sarah Edwards, Outreach Coordinator, of the Deschutes Trails Coalition. If you’re wondering if that’s the same thing as COTA - Central Oregon Trail Alliance that maintains mountain bike trails - but aren’t sure, you’re in good company. Trail alliance – trails coalition, potAto – PoTAHto, right?
What the DTC and COTA have in common is they both work hard to support a sustainable network of trails in Central Oregon, DTC just goes about it from a slightly different angle. For example, COTA – and a whole host of other trail clubs in the area - think Central Oregon Nordic Club or Friends of Central Cascades Wilderness or Sawyers with Attitude to Spare - do a ton of on-the-ground trail work with volunteers, some of which is funded by grants. DTC raises money through their $1 for Trails Program to then grant funds to trail organizations to support sustainable trails.
DTC also gets their hands dirty utilizing a 5-person professional trail crew doing on-the-ground maintenance from May to October.
Put simply, DTC is focused more on the macro of
trails stewardship in effort to bring together a wide variety of stakeholders. Trail clubs tend to have a more specific focus centered on the stewardship of a given trail network or type of use, such as the work Oregon Equestrian Trails does on equestrian trails. DTC is here to support winter, summer, non-motorized, and motorized trail-based recreation. They have provided grant funds for projects on BLM, USFS and BPRD trails.
Deschutes Trail Coalition
MORE INFORMATION: For ways to support or to become a steward, visit deschutestrailscoalition.org
The Deschutes Trails Coalition is a group of more than 30 organizations and agencies representing public lands, outdoor recreation, conservation, tourism, businesses, and trail user groups. DTC is generously supported by Visit Bend, Visit Central Oregon, the $1 for Trails Program, the Forest Service, and private donors. DTC also focuses on 4 Pillars of Sustainability: Economic, Social, Environmental, and Physical:
• ECONOMIC: Mindful of the powerful relationship between trails, our local economies, and the sustainability of both.
• SOCIAL : Support access for trail lovers of all types and abilities; sharing trail etiquette and other tips to keep the vibe positive whether folks are on a bike, horseback, snowmobile or skis.
• ENVIRONMENTAL: Considerate of wildlife and how they are impacted by sharing the forest and trails with humans.
• PHYSICAL: Committed to supporting the trails themselves: clearing fallen trees and cutting back brush, cleaning drainages to prevent erosion, and maintaining signs, etc.
After reading all this, you’re probably energized just thinking about trails and maybe you want to do something to support them, too. Loads of information about ways to support or to become a steward can be found on their website DeschutesTrailsCoalition.org. See you on the trails!
HIGH DESERT FOOD AND FARM ALLIANCE
Summer Programs are in Full Bloom!
High Desert Food and Farm Alliance (HDFFA) believes everyone deserves good food. Every day, the nonprofit works to make that happen with its programs to support Central Oregon farmers and ranchers who grow and raise good food, to increase access to good food for our Central Oregon neighbors experiencing food insecurity, and to provide education and resources to consumers so they know where to find locally produced good food.
HDFFA’s Grow & Give program collects fresh, nutritious produce that might otherwise be wasted. Volunteers are invited to join their Glean Teams who pick leftover harvests from local farmers’ fields. HDFFA also tables at Farmers Markets throughout the season to collect unsold produce from our partner farms. In 2023, Grow & Give collected a record 51,475 pounds of produce (more than 42,000 meals!) from farm gleans, farmers markets, and community gardens to deliver to our regional food bank, NeighborImpact.
Fresh Harvest Kits are ready-to-make meal kits consisting of a recipe (in both Spanish and English) and all of the ingredients needed to prepare a meal for four: fresh, local produce, pantry staples, and a spice packet from the Old Mill District’s own Savory Spice Shop. More than 3,200 Fresh Harvest Kits were distributed from La Pine to Warm Springs, and they’re working with more partners to expand the program this year.
VeggieRx, HDFFA’s fresh food prescription program, provides free fresh produce to patients with diet-modifiable medical conditions. Patients who enroll in VeggieRx show significant health improvements.
The tribal-led Shuwiyasha Food Sovereignty project focuses on breaking down internalized colonization within the food system. The goal is to reduce health inequities, increase knowledge around food systems and food sovereignty, increase access to fresh foods, and lay a foundation for future local
food production. This is a joint project with the Warm Springs Community Action Team (WSCAT). HDFFA has recently helped WSCAT to publish a food sovereignty children’s book for community members, and supported the construction of a new greenhouse in the Warm Springs Children’s Learning Garden to extend the growing season and learning opportunities for children and families.
HDFFA works to educate consumers on the importance of supporting local food producers and where to find locally sourced items. Each year, they distribute 32,000 copies of the High Desert Food and Farm Directory available through The Source, The Nugget, and at various locations throughout the region. They co-present film screenings and are excited to host their Second Annual SOUPer Bowl on February 8, 2025. Look for delicious and exclusive Farm-to-Table events with partners like Feast, Wine Down Ranch, and Faith Hope & Charity Winery.

THE FATHER’S GROUP
Unity – Culture - Community
The Father’s Group is a Black led nonprofit located in Central Oregon whose work is focused on advocating, educating and supporting students and families. They work to enhance the lives of the Black community through youth education, leadership, economic empowerment, and community advocacy, while strengthening our community, eliminating barriers, and helping them reach their full potential. The Father’s Group was founded by several black fathers who were concerned about the experiences their children were having both in school and in the broader community. They met initially to share thoughts, concerns and advice, yet soon realized they needed to take more concrete action to secure our next generation’s future. While the nonprofit is Black-led, it embraces collaboration and cross-cultural influences, operating not just a group, but also as dedicated individuals who are doing great work in the community in education, business and social services.
They offer several programs including Ujima, a free afterschool program with dynamic classes and fieldtrips all conducted through an Afro-Centric lens. They also have the Deshaun Adderley Scholarship program. This is a low barrier scholarship provided to students to help them accomplish their academic goals.

SHOPPING
BUDD + FINN BRINGS ELEVATED GIFTS TO THE OLD MILL DISTRICT
Locally owned and operated boutique shop opened in October
Kevin Pilla cut his teeth in the retail industry working on the East Coast for giants like Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Tommy Bahama.
But he’s honed his style in the Pacific Northwest running a boutique shop with a focus on curating diverse, quality products made by good people.
The result? A decade of success in Portland with his store Budd + Finn and a new venture with the same name here in Bend. Pilla’s hugely popular Budd + Finn brand opened a second location in Bend’s Old Mill District last winter, replacing the Ticket Mill near REI. The Ticket Mill - see page 9 - which sells Old Mill District gift cards and Hayden Homes Amphitheater concert tickets, was absorbed into the district’s second-floor management office earlier this month.
“It’s a perfect fit,” Pilla said of the Old Mill District and Bend. “It’s the demographic I appeal to and something I had been wanting to do. Every small business owner’s dream is to expand. It’s nice other people recognize what you’ve been striving to create.”
“I’m a very nostalgic person so really I look for things that tap into nostalgia - whether it’s taking road trips with your family as a kid or taking road trips now with your own kids, my style has that vintage vibe,” he said.
Budd + Finn is named after Pilla’s two rescue dogs.
“Because to me, they represent comfort, everyday living and joy,” Pilla said, adding that his companions are no longer with us, but will live on in name. “That’s what I want in the store.”
HOURS: Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sun. 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
At Budd + Finn you’ll find what Pilla calls “classy souvenirs” including T-shirts and glassware, artwork and throw pillows, coffee mugs, stationery and unique Bend-centric gifts. The store, located between Lush and Tumalo Art Co., oozes Pacific Northwest and Pilla doesn’t hesitate when asked about his overall style.
FP MOVEMENT HEADED TO THE OLD MILL DISTRICT THIS SUMMER
National activewear brand bridges the gap between fashion and function
FP Movement, an offshoot fitness retail concept of Free People, is coming to the Old Mill District this summer.
Carrying a collection of pieces that are just as comfortable at Lady Bird or 900 Wall as they are on the river trail or at Orangetheory, FP Movement is set to open at 330 SW Powerhouse Dr., Suite 120, between Evoke Winery and Avalon Salon & Spa. Store officials hope to welcome guests into their new space by early July.
“They’re just a perfect fit with Bend’s active lifestyle,” Old Mill District marketing director Beau Eastes said about the athleisurewear concept that’ll join lululemon and Athleta in the district.
Established in 2012, FP Movement has been at the forefront of redefining activewear, introducing performance-ready styles that extend beyond the
gym. Rooted in community, individuality, and the spirit of #movingtogether, FP Movement’s activewear for hiking, running, racquet sports, and skiing bridges the gap between fashion and function.
In 2020, FP Movement emerged as an independent brand, opening its first standalone store in Los Angeles. Today, the brand has 37 stores nationwide, offers online shopping at fpmovement.com, and collaborates with wholesale partners and independent fitness studios. From studio to street, FP Movement offers performance-ready activewear, accessories and gear that reflect the transformative power of movement.
A part of the URBN portfolio of brands that include Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Free People, FP Movement is committed to being good stewards of our planet. Since 2012 they’ve donated more than $2 million to the non-profit Girls Inc., recirculated more than 140,000 pieces of activewear through their community donation programs, and partnered with the Better Cotton Initiative to improve cotton farming globally.

ART
FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK
Discover the magic of local artistry
Did you know that more than 20 artists and creators have a home in one of the four studios in the Old Mill District? This amount of free-flowing creativity inspires us, too! That is one of the many reasons we celebrate the dawn of a new month by way of First Friday Art Walk. It’s a captivating journey through the expressions of local artists, each as expansive as the themes that inspire them.
The First Friday of each month from 3 to 6 p.m., Amejko Artistry, Lubbesmeyer Art Studio & Gallery, The Stacks Studios & Galleries, Tumalo Art Co. and a host of retailers celebrate our local makers, designers and artistic spirit by opening their doors for all to meet the humans behind the incredible creations. First Friday Art Walkers will encounter some of the best mixed media art, acrylic, oil-based, sculpture, photography, jewelry, ceramics and handturned wood, among other mediums!
Tumalo Art Co. is in its solo show season with a very diverse line-up of exhibits this year. For an artist a solo exhibit is a major undertaking giving them an opportunity to develop a body of work that “hangs” together thematically. Honestly, hanging the new show is an art in itself. It’s like a puzzle and is similar to a graphic layout—just on a wall instead of a piece of paper. Tumalo Art Co. has two main walls that are designated for the featured exhibit and the shows change every month, opening during the First Friday Art Walk. Seeing the art arranged in the show is exciting for the artist as well, as it is the first time they can see all of their art together as a unit.
First Friday participants can enjoy not only art from around Central Oregon, but participating shops and studios offer different wine samples compliments of Va Piano Vineyards Wine and Champagne Bar. The carefully selected wines complement the creative ambiance, enriching the experience as walkers explore the depths of the regional art on display. First Friday Art Walk in the Old Mill District is the perfect prelude before downtown Bend’s activities that start at 5 p.m.

Inspired by the tranquility and natural beauty of her surroundings, Anna creates pieces that encourage a pause to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of the moment. Her current collection includes a striking “Mountain Landscapes” series that captures the serene and rugged beauty of the Cascades range.
A DEEP WELL OF INSPIRATION
Old Mill District art studios brim with beauty
Among the four art galleries, working studios and many murals within the Old Mill District, inspiration is as free-flowing as the spectacular Deschutes River surrounding this place we call home.
LUBBESMEYER ART STUDIO & GALLERY
Twin artists, Lisa and Lori Lubbesmeyer, blend their backgrounds in painting and printmaking to create strong visual statements in layers of fiber. Visit the Lubbesmeyer twins in their second-floor studio for a behind-the-scenes look into their work which exemplifies a range of varied subjects, including landscapes, architecture and still life.
TUMALO ART CO.
Tumalo Art Co. is an artist collective owned and operated by fourteen local members. It is a gallery known as a hub for many of Central Oregon’s best-known artists, and they open a new exhibit every month. Gallery-goers are treated to a variety of oil, acrylic and mixed media artwork in addition to ceramics, glass, sculpture, photography, hand-pulled prints, handturned wood, handmade jewelry and more!
ALYSON BROWN: Alyson is a photographer and stylist, specializing in beverage and beauty. Her work seamlessly connects the natural world of botanicals with commercial and editorial photography by including flowers, plants, and foliage found in the subjects she’s photographing. Drawing inspiration from her love of botanical charts and specimen prints, Alyson has embarked on a new artistic venture creating floral cyanotypes, aka sunprints, from photos she’s styled and shot. Paying homage to the rich history of botanical documentation, her first collection is an ethereal look into the graceful personalities of flowers.
KIRA FRANCES: Kira’s vibrant work combines elements of abstraction and realism, asking the viewer to investigate the truth in context of one’s perception. Through her extensive travels and experiences in both urban and wild environments, her paintings serve as a canvas for introspection. Begging the question, what is painting if not a glimpse into an altered form of reality?
LINDSAY GILMORE:
Lindsay is known for her landscape paintings that are inspired by the colors and compositions of nature’s contours that captivate her while on adventures with her family. Her work aims to bring a piece of this natural splendor into homes, blending vibrant colors and delicate details to create pieces that resonate with tranquility.
JENNIFER MCCAFFREY: Jen’s former life as a dancer is the guiding light behind her paintings, the overarching aim of which is to create pieces that come alive on the canvas. Jen is adept at capturing movement on canvas. Her styles range from abstract to impressionistic, with current thematic patterns of flora, wind, poetry and light.
ART IN THE HIGH DESERT
Central Oregon’s Premier Juried Art and Craft Show
Featuring 150 juried artists selected from across North America, Art in the High Desert showcases the time-honored tradition of the individual artist. The person you see in the booth is the person who made the work. Meaning attendees have the incredible opportunity to curate an even deeper connection to the art, the artists, and their processes. Notably, the high standard of quality made Art in the High Desert the 10th ranked art show in the nation for art sales in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Art in the High Desert is back in Bend this year at Riverbend Park across from the Old Mill District. This move was made at the request of patrons and artists who, while liking the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center site from a year ago, missed being along the banks of the Deschutes River. The longstanding AHD organizers listened to the input and are delighted to celebrate art back in the heart of Bend. Offering a plethora of paintings, jewelry, sculptures, woodwork and more, AHD is art for everyone and every budget, unique treasures for every home.

Securing your gear is a must—because no one wants to fish for their phone midfloat, right? Plus, we must keep our beloved river pristine.
