SO YOU’RE IN CENTRAL OREGON
10 things every newcomer should know
BY MAGDALENA BOKOWA
BE NICE, YOU’RE IN BEND
Plastered all over shops, counters, cars, bikes… you get it. The decals, though at times cringe-worthy, embody the core vibe of Bend. Be f’n pleasant, because, yes, this IS Pleasantville—and we like it that way. So practice the Leave No Trace principles, pick up after yourself, use trails gently, don’t steal, don’t flip people off and be patient: things take extra time here. Breathe in that beauty.
PUFFY JACKETS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND
Listen, it may look super sunny and warm out right now, but trust us, because we’re at 3,623 feet, temperatures can get super wacky,
with evening temps averaging 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit below the daytime high. So layer up, preferably with flannel because that’s the PNW uniform. They don’t call it the High Desert for no reason. Actually…
IPA, PALE ALE, REDS OR SOURS? PREPARE FOR BEER.
There’s a reason we’ve also been crowned Beer Town, USA. At last count, there are 24 craft breweries in Central Oregon, with 16 in Bend. About 50 percent of visitors visit at least one brewery while here, so prepare for what we like to call “the big bloat,” which is why all those mountain biking and ski trails come in handy. There’s even a Bend Ale Trail. No, don’t do it all in one day.
Welcome to Central Oregon! No, seriously, we mean it. We know the cat’s outta the bag: Deschutes County (that’s us) was number one in overall population growth in all of Oregon in 2017, growing by a whopping 3.6 percent. And with this being the Pacific Northwest’s version of Neverland, why not embrace all the things we’ve got going on? Here’s your noob’s guide to the High Desert.
SIGNAL OUT OF ROUNDABOUTS
OK, you’ve gone through your first panic-driven roundabout. Now, for the love of all things holy, use your turn signal when exiting! Bend has at least 20 of ‘em, so you’ll have plenty of practice. Each one’s filled with an awe-inspiring, perhaps puzzling and at times eye-blinding art sculptures (watch for those reflective mirrors), so they’re kinda fun once you figure them out. There’s even an entire Roundabout Art Route devoted to it. Yes, that’s a thing. No, we haven’t done it.
TRAFFIC JAMS. THEY DON’T EXIST.
Though you may hear the aforementioned Bendite complain about it, let’s be honest, you probably came here from somewhere way more congested. It takes 20 minutes to move across Bend or to get to Sisters; Redmond is 14 miles away, and Smith Rock takes 45 minutes. But a better way to move? Bike your butt off. You’ll notice increasingly more bike lanes.
GETTING HIGH IN THE HIGH DESERT
With 22 cannabis dispensaries in Bend alone, there’s plenty of top-notch quality bud to go around. Though legal to consume for anyone over the age of 21 (yes, even you, 6
EAT DRINK GO PLAY Texas, just bring valid I.D.), smoking publicly is not. So puff, puff, pass at home. Or in your Airbnb— I’m sure they’d love it.
LET PEDESTRIANS/CYCLISTS/ DEER CROSS THE ROAD AT ALL TIMES Crossing the road at an unmarked area? Or just thinking of it? It doesn’t matter, because a bonafide Oregonian has a sixth sense for these things. It’s actually Oregon law to give pedestrians the right of way, even when there’s no crosswalk. We’ll stop to let you cross, even if it means causing a momentary traffic jam. So don’t freak out, because you’re crossing, buddy, whether you like it or not.

MORE DOGS THAN HUMANS
Or at least it feels that way. With a reported 50 percent of residents owning a pooch, there’s a reason we were crowned Dog Town, USA, by Dog Fancy magazine in 2012. With 13 off-leash areas in city parks and national forests, eight dog parks and more than 40 eateries and breweries offering pet-friendly dining spots, this is the spot for your furball. There’s even a Bend Pet Parade on July 4 and a wiener dog race for Oktoberfest.
THE GREAT DIVIDE: WEST SIDE VS EAST
Not to be confused with Westside Tavern (you’ll end up there one morning and wonder where it all went wrong). There’s a small geographic rivalry divided by Third Street—or what we like to call the “moat.” West side is old-school Bend, meaning rickety mill houses—now dubbed cute—close to breweries and the river, whereas the east side is burgeoning with new development... and increasingly, breweries. Go figure. West side definitely has “the vibe,” but if you’re looking to buy or rent, northeast or southeast is your best bet.
CYCLEPUB
Do it once. And then avoid eye contact with anyone who’s waving at you from one from then on... because you’re a local now.

Welcome to eagle, big pine, juniper and sagebrush country!
BY JIM ANDERSON AND LEEANN KRIEGH
Central Oregon has the perfect habitat for eagles and other natural treasures. Here are some sites to check out the local flora and fauna.

The American bald eagle—once almost extinct in this part of the U.S.—has returned, and can be seen just about any place in the state. There are now over 400 active enile bald ea gle nests statewide! Golden eagles rule Juv / the rimrock and sage country east of Bend, along with coyotes, jackrabbits and a number of reptiles, including the Great Basin rattlesnake. Head for the high lakes along the e T u r Cascade Lakes Highway to find bald o d i u t/T Res ra eagles and osprey interacting over the plentiful fish, with Crane Prairie and Wickiup Reservoirs being the most lucrative. A plethora of shorebirds and splendid views of rafting waterfowl make renting a boat for the day very worthwhile. o o d W p eck iry er Ha Heading east along Highway 20 / near Hampton Station will cause you to miss your nap, watching eagles and a wide variety of hawks interacting within and around the hay field pivots. Taking side trips on any of the Pronghorn Bu ck many Bureau of Land Management roads will give you sightings of our state bird, the western meadowlark, lots of high desert shrub/steppe sparrows and other brush-loving birds, such as the sweetly singing sage thrasher, and Female M ule a healthy population of fence lizards. Sighting a small herd of pronghorn antelope will make your day. Going south via Highway 31 to northern Lake County will take you to Fort Rock, Hole-in-theGround, Crack in the Ground, and

more hay farms for raptors, badgers, barn owls and so much more that you'll want to stay for days. Continuing south will bring you to The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area, filled with shore birds, waterfowl and owls, plus reptiles and mammals of the desert and marshes. In spring and fall, the migrating flights of geese are quite spectacular. In the Sisters area, especially Cold Springs Campground and any section of trail along the Metolius River, see the White-headed woodpecker and a number of colorful warblers. To view our local fish varieties, visit the Wizard Falls fish hatchery. Due to the diversity of plant life, butterfly watchers from all over the country come here to add a number of species to their life list. The Deschutes River, the main waterway bisecting Central Oregon, affords many opportunities for wildlife viewing by raft or hiking trails. The walk to Steelhead Falls from the parking area at Crooked River Ranch, northwest of Redmond, will reward you with spectacular scenery as well as eagles nesting on the cliffs and orioles in the trees. Southeast of Madras, Haystack Reservoir, Smith Rock State Park and the Rimrock Springs Wildlife Management Area features mule deer, songbirds, raptors, otter and a number of reptiles and amphibians. The newly converted sewage ponds near Prineville will concentrate your birdwatching in a well designed and densely populated refugee for birds. An easy walking trail loops you through the various habitats. And let’s not forget Bend: Two favorite places for walking on the wild side are Shevlin Park and Sawyer Park, loved by the locals for woodpeckers, warblers, mink, trout, garter snakes and butterflies. BY LISA SIPE, SOURCE FOOD WRITER
From gingery pork meatballs, to Japanese Wagyu steak, to the cardamom-infused ocean roll, Central Oregon has an abundance of must-have taste bud teasers. And don't forget the pea tendril-carrot salad with horseradish cream. PRIMAL CUTS
Primal Cuts is a butcher shop and so much more. Stop in for a sandwich and a pint from one of the 37 taps. The predictably meat-forward sandwiches are unforgettable. The Asian-style pork meatball is reminiscent of a banh mi, with soft, gingery pork meatballs, house-made pickled vegetables, fresh cilantro and green onions on an airy Sparrow Bakery hoagie lightly spread with spicy Sriracha mayonnaise. These sandwiches are so good you’ll be back to try each one. 1244 NW GALVESTON AVE., BEND 541-706-9308. PRIMALCUTSMEATMARKET.COM

FIVE GREAT BURGERS IN C.O.
The mainstay you crave, and where to get it best in Bend and beyond
BY LISA SIPE
submitted
Lisa Sipe
When it comes to pubs, Central Oregon has more than its fair share—most with a burger or two on the menu. To help you decide which one to choose, we’ve narrowed it down to the five juiciest, drool-inducing burgers around. SCOUTPOST (ABOVE)
To make a burger extraordinary, each component needs to be perfect. At Scoutpost—named our 2018 Food Cart of the Year— they really nail it. The toasted potato bun is flaky and soft, the edges crispy. The grass-fed beef patty is well seasoned, the cheddar cheese is creamy and the caramelized onions are a bit sweet. So are the housemade bread and butter zucchini pickles. The lettuce is super crisp, the poblano harissa is spicy, and you can taste the smokiness in the bacon. This burger has incredible depth of flavor, just messy enough to keep you eating. You won’t want to put it down anyway. 310 SW INDUSTRIAL WAY, BEND SCOUTPOSTBEND.COM 541-904-5005 22
DANDY’S DRIVE - IN
The Double Dandy is the best fast food burger in Bend. It’s completely different than the other gourmet burgers on this list, but equally delicious—and bonus, it’s reasonably priced. The Double Dandy has a juicy ground chuck patty, crispy bacon, melted cheddar cheese, tomatoes, pickles, special sauce and shredded lettuce on a soft bun. Dandy’s is an old time drive-in, so it’s cash only and customers stay in the car while servers on roller skates take orders and deliver meals. 1334 NE 3RD ST., BEND FACEBOOK.COM/DANDYS-DRIVEIN-102235203153424 541-382-6141
DRAKE
Beer cheese and the option of pork belly or roasted bone marrow added to your delicious burger, served in a hip spot in Bend’s downtown? Yes, please. Drake, located on one of the busiest intersections in Bend, is a hot spot for drinks and food of all types, but the burger is also top of mind when creating one of these awesome lists. Go there, and then check out its sister spot, Washington, also with great burgers. 801 NW WALL ST., BEND DRAKEBEND.COM 541-306-3366

The Restaurant at Awbrey Glen $$$ Simply put, this food cart’s burger is a masterpiece. A well-seasoned Wagyu beef patty is layered with sweet, smoky bacon, sautéed mushrooms and Maker’s Mark onions. If that wasn’t enough flavor, there’s also lettuce, tomato, fresh onion and peppercorn aioli with a hint of lemon on an airy brioche bun. The cheddar cheese pools over the sides of this messy, almost-too-tall-to-fit-in-your-hands burger. 19860 7TH ST., TUMALO THEROGUECHEF.KITCHEN 541-647-0093

DRINKING LOCAL? DRINK HERE 10 breweries and beer bars to make the most of Bend (and beyond) BY KEVIN GIFFORD Keely Damara
Sure, there’s lots to see and do around Central Oregon, but what about after all the hiking and biking and SUP’ing is done? The answer (for the over21 crowd, that is) is to head out for a beer. Here are 10 places that evoke everything that makes up one of the coolest small-town brew scenes in the United States.
Central Oregon’s only family magazine offers fun for the whole family! Check out a new issue of Bend Nest every season for the latest and greatest in local events.

THE ALE APOTHECARY (PICTURED)
Founder Paul Arney and his team are focused on one thing at the Apothecary—making truly unique beers, aged in oak, waiting patiently for the right moment to express themselves. It takes time, making Arney’s bottles highly sought-after, but the taproom (open afternoons from Thursday to Saturday only) always has a selection from which to sample, all guaranteed to both taste great and like nothing else anyone in the state is doing. 30 SW CENTURY DR. #140, BEND 541-797-6265. 10 BARREL BREWING
Expansion, and a rich uncle named A-B InBev, has allowed this veteran Bend outfit to spread its name far beyond the neighborhood Galveston location—still a great local hangout. The much-larger factory and brewpub in northeast Bend (a region now home to a wide range of new breweries) is also a good place to try out their more experimental stuff, involving wild fermentation and aging beers in assorted exotic barrels. 1135 NW GALVESTON AV. 62950 NE 18TH ST., BEND 541-678-5228. 10BARREL.COM

DESCHUTES BREWERY BEND PUBLIC HOUSE
Nobody would be talking about Bend as a beer town if Deschutes Brewery hadn’t come around in 1988. The Black Butte Porter and Fresh Squeezed IPA are just as tasty in Bend as they are in bars across Texas and Virginia, but the original Bond Street brewpub is still worth visiting for its exclusive one-off beers, as well as a dinner menu that goes well beyond stereotypical bar food. The steaks alone make this place a must. 1044 NW BOND ST., BEND 541-382-9242. DESCHUTESBREWERY.COM
DRINK GO PLAY
White Water is one of the nerve centers of Bend brewing, offering 30 taps of beer, cider, wine and coffee, nearly all from the Northwest. It’s also a super-chill, down-home place, where patrons sit around on slow evenings playing cribbage and brewery-themed bingo nights turn into major social events. It’s the kind of joint where everyone would want to be a regular. 1043 NW BOND ST. 541-797-2178. WHITEWATERTAPHOUSE.COM

THE BREW SHOP / PLATYPUS PUB
THE BROWN OWL
No doubt about it—The Brown Owl is one of the snappiest-looking places to drink in town, with high ceilings and reclaimed wood that gives it an authentically majestic Pacific Northwest look. The atmosphere, though, is Bendian casual, featuring a lovely selection of taps, a surprisingly extensive list of bottles and cans ( just clap your hands) and some killer grub whipped up by the bar’s original food truck out front. 550 SW INDUSTRIAL WAY #120, BEND 541-797-6581. BROWNOWLBEND.COM
Many great local brewers (and quite a few hobbyists) got their start with the equipment sold at The Brew Shop, a homebrew supplier and bottle store located in an old church. Stop on by to pick up some local beers to take home, from the big names to the littler guys around the area, including Monkless and Immersion. After that, head for the basement pub, with lots of Oregon beer on tap and a scene that’s chill, lively and totally local. 1203 NE 3RD ST., BEND 541-323-3282. THEBREWSHOPBEND.COM
WHITE WATER TAPHOUSE
Conveniently located right across the street from Deschutes (resist the urge to jaywalk),
BROTHER JON’S PUBLIC HOUSE
There’s also a downtown location (Brother Jon’s Alehouse) right on Bond St., but for an even more local experience, check out the original Brother Jon’s, situated in what’s basically a residential house. The bar is small and the space can grow pretty busy on the weekends, but the well-curated tap selection always offers something nice, and the menu (especially the enormous sandwiches) always matches well with the beers. 1227 NW GALVESTON AVE., BEND 541-306-3321. CROW’S FEET COMMONS
On the edge of downtown where the center of the city meets Drake Park, the Commons cafe—located in one of the oldest houses in town, built by Bend’s first mayor—oozes atmosphere. Grab a seat by the fire in the wintertime, or head out to the front porch and sip something from Hood River-based pFriem Family Brewers as the sun gradually edges behind the trees and houses that line Mirror Pond. It’s the perfect end to any day. 875 NW BROOKS ST., BEND 541-728-0066. CROWSFEETCOMMONS.COM
CRUX FERMENTATION PROJECT Founded by the former brewmaster at Deschutes Brewery (the two breweries will release a collaboration this summer to toast Deschutes’ 30th birthday), Crux is a must for its location alone—atop a hill with great sunset views, with a large outdoor space for dogs and food trucks. It certainly helps that the onsite brewing program reigns supreme, too, covering everything from light lagers to intense Belgian stouts.
SUNRIVER BREWING CO.
Just when everyone thought there was no way Central Oregon could support yet another brewery, here comes Sunriver out of nowhere, dazzling with its beer and winning tons of medals at national competitions. It was one of the first breweries to bring the vaunted New England IPA style to Oregon, and it's still among the few to do it well—to say nothing of the rest of their lineup. (The main brewery is in Sunriver itself, 20 minutes away.) 1005 NW GALVESTON AVE, BEND. / THE VILLAGE AT SUNRIVER, SUNRIVER 541-408-9377/541-306-5188. SUNRIVERBREWINGCOMPANY.COM 31

10 places to get a great cocktail in Bend and Central Oregon
BY CHRIS MILLER
900 WALL
When it’s tourist season—wait, isn’t it always?—this place can get slammed, but don’t fret. Even if you have to wait for a table, you can be sipping one of the great cocktails 900 Wall has to offer—a Negroni in the summer months, or a My Little Pony when it’s dumping snow. 900 WALL ST., BEND 541-323-6295. 900WALL.COM

VELVET
It may be Beer Town, USA, but make no mistake—Benditos like their cocktails, too. If your desire for libations falls more on the sweet, savory, or nonhoppy side, here’s where to find your jam. (And yes, they all serve beer, too.) Source Staff
This narrow, double-story bar will have you feeling like you’re on the VIP guest list. The comfy couches and chairs suck you in as you sip on the Prohibition Intoxicants, or order off the Local Favorites menu. THE DOGWOOD COCKTAIL CABIN
For those looking for a chic spot to take a date before dinner (or after), you can’t go wrong with Dogwood. This spot’s “Cabin Fever” happy hour includes a number of excellent drinks, and they’ll be happy to whip one—or two—up for you, and do it well every time. Winner of Best Cocktail and Best Bar in the 2018 Source Weekly reader poll. 147 NW MINNESOTA AVE., BEND 541-706-9949. THEDOGWOODCOCTAILCABIN.COM
THE STIHL WHISKEY BAR
About four years ago, owner Jason Gartz drove around Bend looking for a good whiskey bar but came up empty handed. He opened The Stihl so “others wouldn’t have to suffer the fate of foregoing a good Old Fashioned again.” With over 400 varieties of whiskey to choose from—and excellent food—it’s safe to say Gartz succeeded. 550 NW FRANKLIN AVE., SUITE 118, BEND 541-383-8182. LOS AGAVES MEXICAN GRILL
If you want tequila, they’ve got it! Sorry to bite on the AC/DC lyric, but seriously, if you want more options for a Margarita—or just straight shots—Los Agaves is the place to go in Sisters. Maybe tequila with a beer back? No problemo, you can order the Coronarita, the house Margarita with a Corona overturned into the glass. Or go for the La Patrona, Patron silver, freshly squeezed lime and citrus soda. Refrescante! 291 E. CASCADE AVE., SISTERS 541-549-0777. AGAVESGRILLSISTERS.COM
JACKALOPE GRILL
Pull up a seat at the bar or relax on one of the small couches and enjoy a cocktail. The well-trained staff can pour you a Manhattan—see our review in the Winter Happy Hour Guide—or order off the drink menu. The Raspberry Cosmo is as refreshing as a dip in the Deschutes. 750 NW LAVA LN., #139, BEND 541-318-8435. JACKALOPEGRILL.COM

And, you can order a Duck Fat Sazerac—seriously, who doesn’t want duck-fat infused bourbon, Absinthe and bitters shaken with a bit of lemon? If this doesn’t do it for you, there’s always the seasonal craft menu. Either way, you’ll be stoked. 900 NW MT. WASHINGTON DR., BEND 541-640-8527. WASHINGTONBEND.COM

ROCKIN’ DAVE’S BISTRO & BACKSTAGE LOUNGE
East-siders flock to Dave’s for the great cocktails and appetizers. We reviewed Dave’s Manhattan for our Happy Hour Guide: Dave’s B-side is a sweeter, lighter take on the classic drink. The ginger-peach bourbon sets off the vermouth without making the cocktail into a drink-with-your-pinky-out disaster. On the nose, it’s as Manhattan as Times Square; the intoxicating smell of the bourbon beckons you to dive in. 661 NE GREENWOOD AVE., BEND 541-318-8177. ROCKINDAVES.COM

KEEP CALM AND FLOAT ON
Read this before you float the Deschutes River
BY MAGDALENA BOKOWA
Exhausted from all that mountain biking/hiking/rock climbing you’ve been doing in Central Oregon? Time to kick back, climb into a rubber donut, soak in those 300(ish) days of sunshine and float 90(ish) minutes through downtown Bend. It’s the perfect excuse to experience our brilliant river without the fear of getting knocked off by a rogue wave—that is, unless you venture down the wrong lane at the Whitewater Park. So err left and cowabunga, dude!
Bend Park & Recreation District
DITCH THE FLAMINGO FLOATIE
Our bets are it’s not always water. Maybe “mommy juice?”
floatie busts. Relish in whatever the adventure brings!
YES, YOU REALLY DO NEED WATER SHOES
RIDE THE RIVER SHUTTLE
Your soles will thank you when you’re climbing out and waiting on hot pavement, so bring some strappy outdoor sandals. Ditch the flip-flops… you don’t want to be that guy who pollutes the river when his shoe goes rogue.
TO DO OR NOT TO DO? THE WHITEWATER PARK
Bend’s Whitewater Park has three sections, Bend Park & Recreation District one for floaters, one for “experts,” and one for wildlife. On the left are the small yet fun rapids for floatHYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE ers—though paddler beware: the drops vary depending on the time of the season. As you It gets seriously toasty during summer pass the iconic Old Mill smokestacks, keep months, so bring your refillable water bottle. an eye out for what other floaters are doing Drinking “adult beverages,” is a big no-no (staying left) and follow suit. If you have while on public waters and no one wants children, exit at the Colorado Avenue Bridge glass or plastic in the river, but, (cough), and walk the short path to McKay Park to our town does seem to sell a lot of those re-enter the river. And if you go for it, don’t insulated growler-style bottles, and who’s to cry if you get scraped up or the flamingo say what’s in there, really… 52
Yep, we love floating so much, it’s pretty much a city-wide institution and it has its own shuttle service so you can get back to your car you left at the start of the float. Running June 16 to Sept. 3, parking is available at Park and Float, Simpson Avenue and Bradbury Way, across from The Pavilion. Cascades East Transit has a Ride the River shuttle at the end of your float at Drake Park. Fee for 2017 was $3. As of press time, 2018 rates had yet to be announced. More info: bendparksandrec.org

We know it’s totally you, but with sections of the Deschutes River shallower than a kiddie pool, those rocks are coming atcha—and they have no mercy, so please opt for a durable donut. State law requires lifejackets for kids under 12 or for those paddleboarding or boating (regardless of age), with Personal Flotation Devices free to rent at Riverbend Park, where you can also rent a floatie (for a fee). Local operators such as Sun Country Tours and Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe also offer rentals. So rubber up, because you don’t want to be Instagrammed wading out with a flat floatie… that’d be sad. But also mildly hilarious, so tag us @SourceWeekly if it happens.

When in Bend or beyond, here’s where to hike and breathe that fresh mountain/desert air
BY BRITTANY MANWILL
Central Oregon boasts no shortage of hiking trails. These 10 options include easy-to-follow paths and showcase the variety of terrain the high desert has to offer. From beginner to advanced, pick your poison.

BLOW & DORIS LAKE
A trail that’s soft, flat, and shaded—a welcome retreat in the summer months. Blow Lake is the first lake on the Six Lakes Trail, and you can reach it just a mile from the trailhead. Continue another mile or so and you’ll catch Doris Lake. Continue farther for other tucked-away little lakes. DISTANCE: 4.5 HIKE TIME: 2.5 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER FITNESS INTENSITY: BEGINNER
TAM - A - LAU TRAIL
SHEVLIN LOOP TRAIL
For a family outing right in Bend’s backyard, check out Shevlin Park. Follow the Shevlin Loop Trail to the top of one side of the canyon and across a plateau. After about 2 miles, you’ll head down into the valley and cross Tumalo Creek before heading back on the opposite side of the canyon. DISTANCE: 4.75 HIKE TIME: 2 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER FITNESS INTENSITY: MODERATE
LAVA RIVER CAVE
You’ll find lava tunnels all around Bend, but this one is good for beginners. Follow a rocky path into the cave, noticing how it gets softer and sandier the farther you go. Give yourself extra time for exploring dark nooks and crannies. Bring warm clothes, sturdy footwear and a headlamp. DISTANCE: 2 MILES HIKE TIME: 1 HOUR TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: MODERATE FITNESS INTENSITY: BEGINNER 56

UPPER TUMALO FALLS
Visit Tumalo Falls just for the big waterfall and you may never go again. It’s beautiful, but it’s busy. Keep hiking past the crowds, though, and you’ll get to see three small falls within 2 miles. Admire the falls in solitude and head back the way you came. DISTANCE: 4 MILES HIKE TIME: 2 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER FITNESS INTENSITY: MODERATE
CINDER HILL
Climb this red cinder cone for a full panoramic view of Newberry Caldera, including basalt and obsidian flows, as well as Paulina Peak and bird’s-eye views of East and Paulina lakes nestled below. On clear days, you may even see snowy Mount Thielsen and Diamond Peak. Despite the 1,000-foot elevation gain, it’s a surprisingly comfortable
When snow is still covering the high Cascades, go explore Cove Palisades State Park and Lake Billy Chinook. You’ll hike a steep slope to the top of The Peninsula, then loop around the flat-top rimrock formation for views of the lake below and the three rivers that enter it: Deschutes, Crooked and Metolius. DISTANCE: 6.5 MILES HIKE TIME: 3 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: MODERATE FITNESS INTENSITY: MODERATE
TUMALO MOUNTAIN
You’ll gain over 1,000 feet on the short ascent to the top of this little peak. Enter the forest at the mountain’s base, then quickly hike above the tree line onto the exposed hillside. It’s a sweaty slog, but unobstructed views of the Three Sisters, Broken Top, Mount Bachelor and the lower deserts await you at the top. Head north to the drier side of Central Oregon and check out Smith Rock’s colorful cliffs and stunning rock formations. Follow a steep trail into the park, then cross the river and follow the Misery Ridge Trail. You’ll breathe heavy through steep switchbacks and sweat as you ascend rocky staircases and loose terrain. At the top, admire the sweeping views of surrounding Cascade mountains and the Crooked River Gorge below. Word of warning, though: Smith Rock is a heavily-trafficked destination. Stroll along creeks and through forests and wildflower meadows, past lava flows, until you arrive at a large three-lake basin at the base of South Sister and Broken Top. 10 MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES NEAR BEND Trails to ride, from beginner to expert
BY KATY BRYCE
Central Oregon is a mountain bikers dream come true. From family friendly cruiser trails that start near Bend, to remote, high elevation rides, there’s something for everyone. Below are my top 10 rides, from beginner to expert, two hours or less from Bend.
Olallie – O’Leary Epic / Katy Bryce
BEGINNER Katy Bryce
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER FITNESS INTENSITY: EASY TO MODERATE
BLACK ROCK TRAIL
Geology buffs revel at the sights on the Black Rock Trail, as the trail winds right next to the lava flow that erupted from Lava Butte about 7,000 years ago. The trail starts at Lava Lands Visitor Center, and then gently rolls down to the Deschutes River, upstream from Benham Falls. From there, ride the Deschutes River Trail to get a little more pedaling in. DISTANCE: 8 MILES RIDE TIME: 1 – 2 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE FITNESS INTENSITY: EASY
SWAMP WELLS
A lesser-known route from Horse Butte southeast of Bend up the northern flank of Newberry Crater. I call it the “east side Phil’s Loop” as the tread is mostly mellow, with some lava rock outcroppings along the way. Watch for horseback riders. DISTANCE: 26 MILES RIDE TIME: 3 – 4 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: INTERMEDIATE FITNESS INTENSITY: MODERATE TO STRENUOUS
ADVANCED Katy Bryce
INTERMEDIATE THE MASTON
Nestled between Bend and Redmond, this is a fun cruiser ride with lots of loop options, including mostly fast and flowy single track that winds through old growth junipers and sagebrush, with the occasional peek at the Cascades or Smith Rock. The southeastern area of the outer loop skirts the river canyon with a wee bit of exposure, so keep your wits about you! DISTANCE: UP TO 19 MILES RIDE TIME: 1 – 3 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE FITNESS INTENSITY: EASY TO MODERATE
SUTTLE TIE TO SUTTLE LAKE
A true mid-summer ride should include a dip in a lake at some point, right? The Suttle Tie Trail connects the Black Butte Ranch area to Suttle Lake with a series of old single track and double track – perfect for a fun family outing. On the Suttle Lake trail, ride around the whole lake or just stop and soak in some sunshine (and perhaps a cold drink) at Suttle Lake Lodge. DISTANCE: 13 MILES RIDE TIME: 1 – 2 HOURS 60
PHIL’S TRAIL NETWORK
The ol’ standby, Phil’s Trail, is what put Bend on the mountain biking mecca map. There are roughly 60 miles of trails in this area, from super fast and fun Phil’s Canyon to slow and picky C.O.D. Spend an hour or all day goofing off on these trails, and if you’re extra ambitious, connect to higher elevation rides at Swampy Lakes and more when the snow has melted out. DISTANCE: UP TO 60 MILES! RIDE TIME: 1 – 8 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: BEGINNER TO ADVANCED FITNESS INTENSITY: EASY TO MODERATE
MRAZEK
Ridden out and back in entirety, the Mrazek Trail is just over 32 miles, skirting the ridges to the north of Tumalo Creek. It starts in Shevlin Park and winds up at a gradual grade. Mrazek is known as “tight and twisty,” so keep your handlebars and pedals in check. Once you get up high, connect to Farewell Trail and Metolius-Windigo Trail. DISTANCE: UP TO 32 MILES RIDE TIME: 1 – 5 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: INTERMEDIATE FITNESS INTENSITY: MODERATE TO STRENUOUS
NORTH FORK – FLAGLINE – SOUTH FORK LOOP
In late summer, head for the hills. This classic loop opens up after Aug. 15 because the section of the route on Flagline Trail is closed for critical elk calving habitat before then. It’s a grinder with some real climbing—and real descending. It also gets you to some of the prettiest places, including Tumalo Falls and Happy Valley. DISTANCE: 24 MILES RIDE TIME: 4 – 5 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED FITNESS INTENSITY: STRENUOUS TO VERY STRENUOUS

Waldo Lake is known to be one of the purest (and seems like the coldest) lakes in the world. Don’t be fooled by the “lake loop” name. This is a beautiful, rugged and remote ride, and for only 20 miles of tread, you get your money’s worth. Hit this ride in September or October when the mosquitos have subsided. They can be ferocious during summer months. DISTANCE: 20 MILES RIDE TIME: 3 – 5 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED FITNESS INTENSITY: STRENUOUS

OLALLIE – O’LEARY EPIC
If you’re hankering for an epic day, grab a few strong riding buddies and embark on this loop that climbs high above the McKenzie River valley. It’s rugged, remote, long, technical, steep and amazing, with some stellar views of the Western Cascades. The ride also starts and ends at a mini mart, which allows for some exceptional post-ride snacking. DISTANCE: 27 MILES RIDE TIME: 6 – 8 HOURS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: EXPERT FITNESS INTENSITY: VERY STRENUOUS For more inspiration, check out Mountain Bike Bend: 46 Singletrack Routes, Bend’s most recent and most comprehensive guide to mountain biking trails in Central Oregon. Cold creek crossings, hanging gardens of moss, waterfalls and giant granddaddy trees are the signatures of the McKenzie River Trail. Only two hours from Bend, the “MRT” is usually ridden as a shuttle from top to bottom, descending 1,700 feet. Do not mistake this for a “downhill” cruise, though, as there is a lot of elevation gain and some very technical sections with razor sharp, tire-eating lava rock.
