BE NICE, YOU’RE IN OREGON

…and other slogans, rules and things you should know while you’re here BY SOURCE STAFF

You’ve made it to Oregon’s Outdoor Theme Park—high five! Here in the High Desert, we work hard at our jobs at craft breweries, kombucha factories and tech firms—but we play even harder. Whether it’s bike season or ski season, it’s always shred season, and our sunny skies and outdoor playlands are probably why Bend continues to be near the top of the lists of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. While you’re here, these are some things you should know.

Did you get weird looks when you passed a pedestrian, standing on the curb, waiting to cross the street away from a crosswalk? That’s because you just committed a cardinal sin of Oregon driving: Pedestrians have the right of way, and you’re supposed to stop for them, crosswalk or not. The Oregon weirdness can go the other way too; if you’re walking down the street and get even remotely close to the curb, expect drivers to slam on their brakes to stop for you. 12

ROUNDABOUT ETIQUETTE

Not only do our abundant roundabouts contain dazzling displays of artwork, but they’re also the places where locals can spot a tourist with just one right-hand turn. To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, signal when you’re exiting a roundabout.

y

PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY

Central Oregon is an outdoor paradise, and locals like it that way. As such, it’s really super not cool to leave bags of dog droppings on the trail—or equally not cool, to leave your trash behind whether in the woods or on the river, or anywhere else. Stay on the trails and enter the rivers at established points to avoid harming delicate vegetation or wildlife—and make sure your dogs do the same. (Plus, leashes are required on most popular trails during busy tourist seasons.) Leave No Trace, brah—or better yet, leave things better than you found them.

xa ba

By now you’ve probably seen at least one person sporting a puffy jacket and flip flops. No, they’re not trying to be as contrary as possible—they’re preparing (their upper bodies, at least) for the drops in temps that happen at night in the High Desert. With an elevation of 3,623 feet and super-dry air, don’t leave that Airbnb without a water bottle and a jacket tucked away for later. Plus, you’re going to need to be hydrated for your brewsky sesh later.

DON’T BE A D*CK IN THE WOODS

Pi

PUFFY JACKETS + HYDRATION: DO IT

EAT

THAT LEGAL WEED

DRINK

Bend boasts over 20 cannabis dispensaries, and the towns of La Pine, Madras and Sunriver boast a few as well. If you’re down to give legal weed a try and you want to peruse a dispensary, you’ll need to be 21 or over, and you’ll have to show your I.D. Smoking in public is a no-no, however, and if you’re staying in a hotel or vacation rental, you’ll have to get creative to find a place to consume. If you do puff outside, be extra careful with your ashes and other burning materials. It’s dry here, and you don’t want to be the cause of the next big fire.

WE ALSO ASKED A FEW LOCALS TO SHARE WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO KNOW. HERE’S WHAT THEY SAID: “Drive safe! Lots of dogs, bikers and pedestrians.” – Jasmine Siefman “We are very dog friendly, so if you’re coming to town, bring your dog.” – Tawna Story Wikimedia Commons

made with our Crushed Urfa Chiles “Drink lots of water. It’s a dry climate and you don’t want to become dehydrated.” – Mandy Butera

“Most businesses downtown are locally owned, so by shopping downtown, you’re helping the community and will always be able to find something special.” – Drew Smith “Try biking. It’s such a safe and fun place for bikers—just don’t forget your puffer, even if it’s spring!” – Diane Brinkman Pixabay

What's Inside Restaurants of the Year Food Cart Pods Happy Hour Finder

FOUR FOOD SPOTS TO TRY Our staff awards a handful of restaurants top honors in our annual Restaurant Guide. These are the places that impressed us in 2019

FOOD CART OF THE YEAR: RONIN SUSHI AND JAPANESE GRILL For sushi lovers, or people who like good poke bowls or bento boxes, Ronin should be your go-to spot. And as a bonus, it’s in the popular food cart lot at The Bite in Tumalo. The sashimi is buttery and fresh, and the rolls have excellent flavors, set off by the staff’s magical use of sauce. You’ll get soy sauce and wasabi for dipping, but you won’t really need them. Owner Scott Byers says all Ronin’s fish needs to be wild caught or sustainably farmed, so the menu can change slightly depending on what fish is available. For those who really love creative sushi, the staff at Ronin will serve “off the menu” rolls put together depending on what fish they have, and what the customer is craving. RONIN SUSHI AND JAPANESE GRILL AT THE BITE IN TUMALO 19860 7TH ST., TUMALO 541-419-3790 DAILY 11AM-9PM ON FACEBOOK

ROOKIE FOOD CART OF THE YEAR: HOGAN’S HOAGIE STOP

Jason Hogan and his wife Hillary opened the food cart at River’s Place on Purcell Boulevard in October 2018. Hogan’s has been a frequent stop for the Source staff this year—which includes a variety of different eaters, including vegetarians and omnivores. The sandwiches at Hogan’s Hoagie Stop are next level. The bread, meat—or veggies—and the special, homemade sauces make these delightful meals into something you’ll dream about. Hogan’s Hoagie Stop also serves soup and cookies, along with some soft drinks and juice. Go get ‘em—you won’t be disappointed. RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR: EL SANCHO

Our restaurant of the year for 2019 is a Bendstyle success story, many years in the making. Joel Cordes started the first El Sancho as a taco food cart downtown in 2010. When he took a hiatus to make bagels, he met his soon-to-be partner, Jon Barvels. They worked at a few restaurants together, including Spork and Crux Fermentation Project, and when Cordes turned the El Sancho cart into a taco shack at the home-improvement resale yard, Pakit Liquidators, he and Barvels became partners. The two now have a brick-and-mortar Taco Shop location on Dekalb Avenue, as well as a taco “shack” at Crux, a truck by Cascade West bar, and a cart at other locations for special events. El Sancho uses recycled materials to maintain a funky street vibe, opting to cook on a "rocket" stove—always recognizing the culture they’ve created is reflected in their food. EL SANCHO TACO SHOP 335 NE DEKALB AVE., BEND 458-206-5973 TACO SHOP HOURS: DAILY 11AM-10PM ELSANCHOBEND.COM

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: THE LEMON TREE

Since its opening, The Lemon Tree has seen a steady stream of visitors, and nearly a year in, a host of loyal followers—making it a natural choice for our Rookie of the Year. The downtown location, on the corner of Bend’s Franklin Avenue and the Brooks Street alley, certainly has something to do with their success—but the varied, international menu and the care the team puts into its drinks, pastries and overall presentation also helps. FOOD CART PODS ABOUND Why limit your choices on food and drinks, when you can be surrounded by options? BY CHRIS MILLER

Bend has an abundance of great mountain bike riding, skiing, hiking and trail running—and in recent years, an explosion of food cart pods to help you gain back those calories lost doing all that activity. Here’s the lowdown on the gastronomic wonders that abound at Central Oregon’s food cart lots—in no particular order. THE LOT

The Lot is Bend’s OG food cart pod. It has 16 rotating taps and is generally busy, especially in the summer, but has plenty of room for people to sit and enjoy lunch or dinner. Currently, The Lot has a wide variety of menus to chose from: A’ La Carte, Burgz and Dogz, Fricken Faco and Greez Street are all slinging food to hungry peeps. The Lot also has Trivia Tuesdays, Open Mic on Wednesdays and live music on Thursdays. Well worth your time if you’re hitting up the west side. 745 NW COLUMBIA ST., BEND DAILY: 11AM-9PM 541-668-1815 THELOTBEND.COM

See more reviews & updates on the Food & Drink page at bendsource.com Courtesy The Lot Facebook CourtesyThe Podski Facebook

THE PODSKI

The Podski offers visitors and people that work downtown some great options for lunch or dinner, and its small tap area will turn into a nice, indoor space later this year. Food carts include Thailandia, Tin Pig, Big Ski’s Pierogi, East Meets West Fusion and Austin Street Tacos—possibly the most diverse food cart pod in Bend. Diners can sit at one of the many picnic tables or take food to go. In the summer, The Podski sets up sunshades and in the winter, there’s a giant wood-burning stove to keep you warm. 536 NW ARIZONA AVE., BEND DAILY: 11AM-7PM THEPODSKI.COM

ON TAP

On Tap is a great summer hangout, featuring corn hole, plenty of space to put a blanket down or lawn chairs and the largest tap list of any of the food pods. On Tap features the following food carts: Barrio, CURBBQ, Himalayan Bites, The Bleu Rooster, PHILLYSTYLE and Bohemian Roastery. 1424 NE CUSHING DR., BEND DAILY: 11AM-9PM ONTAPBEND.COM 16

RIVER’S PLACE

Bend’s newest food cart pod, River’s Place, is on Purcell Boulevard, directly west of Costco. Visitors can sit either in the indoor space, full

of high-top tables and some counter-style places to eat, find a bench or bring their own chairs and enjoy the grassy area. River’s Place is also home to the Source’s Rookie Food Cart of the Year, Hogan’s Hoagie Stop. If a sandwich isn’t on your culinary list, other carts include The Jerk Kings, Red Road Pizza Co., We’re the Wurst and Thailandia. Inside the tap room you’ll find the 14 rotating taps, including beer, cider and kombucha, as well as wine. Visitors can find live music, bingo and trivia hours. Follow River’s Place on Facebook to find events. 787 NE PURCELL BLVD, BEND DAILY: 11AM-9PM RIVERSPLACEBEND.COM

THE BITE IN TUMALO

The Bite sits right on the main drag through the small town of Tumalo, just west of Bend. It has Ronin Sushi and Japanese Grill—our staff pick for food cart of the year—as well as Rico’s Tacos, Rogue Chef and Heidi’s Grilled Cheesery. The taproom, which has rotating local and regional taps, is covered in the wintertime, and with the propane-powered heaters, is very comfortable—even if it’s dumping snow outside. In the summer, the walls come off for a nice, airy experience for eating and drinking a few beers or

cider. There are a few fire pits by the carts and places for kids to play. The Source staff has sampled all of the food at the Bite, and you can’t go wrong with any of the choices. Check The Bite’s Facebook page for events such as live music. 19860 7TH ST., TUMALO DAILY: 11AM-9PM THEBITETUMALO.COM

REDMOND BOOZE CRUISE

Redmond, Ore.—the city of roughly 30,000 people that sits 18 miles to the north of Bend—has had a small collection of breweries for at least the past several years. Options have included Wild Ride Brewing—a hub for brews as well as food carts, The Vault Taphouse, home to the cozy Kobold Brewing lineup of beers, 7th Street Brew House, Cascade Lakes Brewing Company’s Redmond home, open since 1996, and Smith Rock Brewing, located in a engaging former residence near downtown. But if the explosion of new spots is any indication, people in Redmond have a bigger appetite for beer these days. A host of new breweries and drink spots have opened in the past year, and we wanted to experience them all—so we got Wanderlust Tours, which specializes in outdoor tours as well as brew tours, to help us out, driving us around on a custom Redmond booze cruise—the ideal way to drink responsibly while touring around yonder Central Oregon. Here’s (an edited version of) what happened while on our Redmond tour. 4 pm Friday: Fourteen Source staffers assemble at our office—quite possibly the largest Source drinking team ever. (Check out our Craft column in any issue of the Source for more of our exploits.)

GOMPERS DISTILLERY

Gompers Gin had its grand opening party at the end of April—but before that, co-owner Michael Hart gave us our own private tour of the Prohibition-style tasting room, located in the new Jackpine Court complex in northeast Redmond. The Gompers space is stunning, with gorgeous, 1920s-style arts and crafts-style wallpaper and finishings, and a giant wood bar. The space even has a secret room, accessible only to Founders Club members. We sipped various versions of gin, made with the hand-picked juniper berries CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

that grow in serious abundance in Central Oregon. The Estate Gin is smooth and easy to drink by itself; the Old Tom is barrel-aged and makes an ideal cocktail mixer. Hart says it’s even delicious in a Manhattan—normally made with bourbon or rye.

PORTER BREWING Never had a true cask ale? Have trouble finding places that serve it? Put Redmond on your list. With the addition of Porter Brewing, Oregon now has a total of two cask-only breweries in the state. (Brewers Union Local 180 in Oakridge is the other one.) Porter’s owner and brewer Deven Roberts, a longtime home brewer, had such an affinity for British-style cask beers–which are unfiltered and unpasteurized, and pumped from a cask without CO2 or nitrogen—that he built his entire operation around them. Our crew descended upon Porter’s small tap room, ordering everything from the 1772 Porter to a series of Bitters, to the JUSTin Time Stout—named after the workman who helped the team get their refrigeration system up and running to help them finish a batch of beer before it spoiled. The vibe is homey and bright, the beers are delish. Porter Brewing is also the space that can take credit for bringing Bad Boys Barbecue to Jackpine Court. Located between Porter and Dry Fields Cider, the food cart, serving up a host of delicious barbecue items, plus nachos and other dishes, will deliver your food to where you’re drinking. 22

DRY FIELDS CIDER

The beauty of Jackpine Court’s many beverage offerings: There’s something for everyone, including a cidery with a long list of its own ciders, as well as ciders from around the region. Owner Stephen Fields has created a family friendly atmosphere, with a kids’ area, regional artists’ work on the walls and long tables ideal for group gatherings. Fields isn’t a big fan of overly sweet ciders—so many of his offerings are on the dry side, hence the name “Dry Fields.” The menu includes cherry, raspberry, blueberry and even banana ciders—along with a few spicy options, such as the salsa and mangopeño varieties. Our crew really enjoyed the spicy ones, and had a fun time in the sunny spot, with the doors wide open to let in lots of fresh air. Life is good at Jackpine Court.

SMITH ROCK BREWING

Smith Rock Brewing isn’t a new brewery in Redmond—but no one in our crew had ever visited, so we made it a stop on the tour. While there’s a large National-Forest type sign outside announcing the place, the building can be hard to miss, since it’s a former house, surrounded by a tallish fence. Inside, the vibe is equally homey. Danielle and Kevin Stewart own and operate the brewery, along with a dedicated crew, serving a full complement of beers that include its delightful Skull Hollow Black Ale—a Cascadian Dark Ale that melds dark beers with heavy hops, the Asterisk Pass Amber Ale—a smooth, easy drinking amber, and the Peregrine Porter—chocolatey and delicious. While we each ordered our

own pints, Smith Rock also serves pitchers—the ultimate beer-sharing experience. Smith Rock offers a Tex-Mex-style menu, and has an ample patio outside, with fire pits, lawn games and a little window where you can order, without having to go back inside.

INITIATIVE BREWING

Redmond. While not officially open during our grand tour of area drink spots, Initiative was hard at work getting ready. The spot features a gorgeous juniper wood bar, and the lineup of beers is right in line with what Northwesterners like: IPAs, IPAs, IPAs—with others including a Belgian and a stout thrown in. With a pub menu featuring a banh mi sandwich, salads and gourmet burgers—including a Korean BBQ burger—they're on the right track with the food options. With an anticipated opening of May 2019, the Source drinking team will be first in line when they open their doors.

*Mat & towel rentals included*

Imagine a cold, snowy evening—or a stiflingly hot afternoon—when being outside, playing lawn games, is precluded by the weather. Then enter Geist Beerworks’ vast indoor space, where there’s enough room for the brew system, but also for indoor cornhole, and even a food cart, set up in the industrial space. With the BBQ food cart, Hoggy Style, outside, and more pub grub served inside, ending our evening here was a good move. The space, located just west of Roberts Field airport in an industrial-looking complex, isn’t in a location where you’d expect to find a brewery, but since its opening in 2018, the somewhat off-thebeaten-path location hasn’t stopped it from being a popular locals’ spot quite quickly. The beers offer something different, too. Co-owner Heather Wales is not shy about saying that many of her beers can fall into the “chick beer” category, with brews that include the Pineapple Express—touted as tasting like pineapple upside down cake—along with berry-infused creations using blackberries, blueberries and more. Don’t worry, though—the space also offers up your more standard Northwest IPAs, ales and stouts.

SILVER MOON - MANGO IPA

FRUITY LOVE A tropical burst of flavor; admittedly, it can be dangerous. This IPA is my go-to when hanging out by the water, or just lounging in a lawn chair. – Bron Wickum

OUR STAFF’S FAVE BEERS

Courtesy Wild Ride Brew

Yes, Central Oregon has a lot of great beer. Here are a few local classics to get you started BY SOURCE STAFF

WILD RIDE BREW - ELECTRI - FLY IPA If you’re visiting Central Oregon, chances are you’ve at least heard about Deschutes Brewery’s Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter. You’ve probably also had a 10 Barrel Pub Beer or two at one point. But with dozens of breweries in Central Oregon, there’s lots more out there. Let our staff— members of our expert drinking team—give you some other ideas.

Isaac Biehl

PFRIEM - BRIGHT PALE

SPRING BEER HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES Pfriem isn’t a Central Oregon brewery, but it needs to be on your radar, because they make a lot of beers, most among the best in the state. During the spring, they bottle the Bright Pale ale—and it’s unfortunate it’s not a year-round beer. The tropical aromas coupled with the crisp taste make it an instant classic! Go get some before it’s gone. – Chris Miller Keely Damara

BEVEL BREWING – BICENTENNIAL DOUBLE IPA

FLY BEER IN REDMOND This Redmond favorite is very aromatic, balancing hops with tropical notes with honey malts for a smooth delivery. – Keely Damara

MADRAS BREWING MEXICAN STOUT

CINNAMON AND SPICE It’s been a long time coming, but Madras finally has a brewery. The recipes are theirs, but the brews are made at Bend’s Kobold Brewing. If you’re a fan of Mexican chocolate, and at the same time, you like stouts, then try the Mexican Stout—made with spicy cinnamon flavors that distinguish Mexican chocolate. – Nicole Vulcan

IsaacBiehl

CITRUSY AND SMOOTH The Bicentennial from Bevel leaves a strong mark, to say the least. Its citrus flavors and smooth texture set this apart to make it something truly special. While it sits at 8.9 percent ABV, the flavors make this double easy going. -Isaac Biehl

BONEYARD - RPM

CLASSIC STAPLE Boneyard RPM: what’s left to say that hasn’t been said? Best IPA made in Bend? If it’s not, I’d like to hear a compelling argument that says otherwise. It may not be as frilly or new age as some IPAs, but it’s delicious. Every. Single. Time. – Chris Miller

ALE APOTHECARY - SAHALIE

WILD ALE If you’re not yet familiar with this innovative Bend brewery and its offerings, start with Sahalie, an American wild ale that’s aged in oak barrels and fermented with the brewery’s own lactobacillus culture. Beer geeks, you’re welcome. – Nicole Vulcan 24

SPIDER CITY BREWING - DEER GARDEN HAZY IPA

EASY DRINKIN’ This light and dry hazy IPA is perfect for the summer months. Hoppy and juicy like its sister—the Sneaky Deer Hazy Double IPA— but with a lower ABV, you can enjoy more than one. – Keely Damara

GOOD LIFE - SWEET AS

CANNED BEER PERFECTION Hoppy, fresh and perfect for a sunny afternoon. Sweet As is one of my personal favorites for watching the sun set over the mountains. Plus, it’s 6 percent ABV! – Bron Wickum

WORTHY BREWING – STRATA IPA

GO-TO IPA The Strata IPA is an ideal beverage. It’s fruity, slightly tropical, while not being too overpowering – so it’s very drinkable. It tastes especially satisfying while under the sun and is a prime model of what a good IPA should be. -Isaac Biehl

HIKING THE CASCADE LAKES

BEYOND THE BIG STUFF

Central Oregon has lots of well-known outdoor destinations—and many other equally stunning spots, too. Here’s where to go to stay away from the pack BY NICOLE VULCAN

US Forest Service

The beauty and outdoor adventures that await in Central Oregon are probably some of the big reasons you find yourself visiting here. It’s why we live here, too—and very likely why the people in the Airbnb next door to you are here as well. With the region’s reputation comes lots of people, looking to enjoy the lakes, sunshine, mountains, trails and all the other great stuff. While some of the most wellknown outdoor destinations got that way for good reason (as in, they’re stinkin’ awesome), they can also be pretty busy. Here are some ideas for lesser-known sites that are equally spectacular.

CAMPING AT THE CASCADE LAKES

A drive along the Cascade Lakes Highway west of Bend- is likely to be high on your list of places to visit while you’re here—and for good reason. The lakes are beautiful and the views of Mt. Bachelor, the Three Sisters and Broken Top are gorgeous. And while a lot of people make Todd Lake, Sparks Lake and Elk Lake part of their must-do lists, you’ll find more serenity by heading up the road a bit farther, where you’ll be treated to more of those awesome views along the way. Instead of camping at Elk Lake, consider getting a spot at Little Cultus or Little Lava lakes. They’re smaller, with fewer camp sites and more opportunities for quiet time. West of Sisters, also look to Suttle Lake and the Suttle Lodge and Boathouse for a scenic, peaceful respite from the crowds.

Due to high volumes of people visiting popular hiking spots, officials with the Deschutes National Forest will soon implement a quota system for many hiking trails in the Three Sisters, Waldo Lake, Diamond Peak, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Washington wilderness areas during the warmer months. Trails near the Cascade Lakes Highway that fall under a quota system—meaning a limited number of people will be able to access them on a given day— include Todd Lake, Lucky Lake, Broken Top, Elk Lake, Green Lake/Soda Creek and others. Similar to the scene at the lakes themselves, the less-traveled hikes are farther up the highway. Hikes to check out include Corral Swamp, Winopee Lake, Deer Lake and Many Lakes, all in the areas around Cultus Lake. Find information on accessing each trailhead by searching “Deschutes National Forest hiking” online.

MOUNTAIN BIKING AROUND BEND

With hundreds of miles of single track in Bend, it’s no wonder that cyclists flock to the area to get some of that action. If you’re one of them, then chances are you’ve heard of the Phil’s trail network, named after Phil Maglasson, one of the pioneers of Central Oregon mountain biking. The trailhead parking lot, just west of Bend, is gigantic—one indication of the volume of traffic this area gets. If you’re looking for something a bit more low-key and less-traveled, check out Swamp Wells, a network of dry, desert-like trails offering loops between 10 and 30 miles. Bendtrails.org is a helpful resource for trail conditions and other ideas for lesser-known trails. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING

Mt. Bachelor is the big dog when it comes to skiing and snowboarding in Central Oregon—but don’t overlook Hoodoo, a smaller, family friendly resort west of Sisters, where the old-school mellow vibe abounds. When it comes to Nordic skiing, the area west of Sisters is also a viable alternative to the area around Bachelor. Hoodoo offers groomed Nordic trails, and so does the nearby Ray Benson Sno-Park, where you’ll find Nordic trails and snowshoeing. With a range of hybrid ski setups and split boards on the scene these days, backcountry riding is also an option around the region. Check in with one of the local outdoor shops for tips on where to go, and gear to rent.

ture points at Riverbend Park. The park has a dusty dog park, too—but if you’re really looking to get your pup out and off-leash, we recommend two great dog parks on the east side of Bend. Check out Pine Nursery Park, with a giant offleash area that includes walking paths, as well as Big Sky Park, with a dog park that’s not quite as big as Pine Nursery, but one that contains picnic tables and plenty of shade. WINTER PARADISE Cabins, cocktails and winter fun await at Elk Lake Resort in the Cascades BY CHRIS MILLER

Courtesy Elk Lake Resort

Courtesy Elk Lake Resort

Plenty of locals have only been to Elk Lake in the summer. The views and the abundant trails and camping make this area fun—but crowded. But if you love snow sports—and snow in general—winter at Elk Lake can be a paradise. The route to Elk Lake from the Dutchman Flat Snopark, along Century Drive near Mt. Bachelor, is a bit over 11 miles. To get there, you can catch a $50 round trip ride on Elk Lake Resort’s snow cat, or cross-country ski, or, in my case, ride a snowmobile. Having never been on a snowmachine before, I was hesitant—not only because I’d heard stories about novice riders falling off or getting stuck, but also because I was afraid to like riding a snowmobile. But let’s just say I liked it—a lot. The rustic cabins at the historic resort sleep between six and 10 people. The largest cabin has a fully equipped kitchen and two large covered decks overlooking the lake, with a barbecue. It has three upstairs bed-

from the resort. For cycling enthusiasts, Elk Lake also rents fat tire bikes. According to Wendy Prieve, who along with her husband Pat, have owned the resort for the last five and a half years—the resort stocks sleds free of charge for kids to ride the hills. Prieve said the resort tries to groom the 7-mile loop around the lake as often as possible in the winter for the cross-country skiers and snowshoers—and the little loop down by the north shore of the lake—to keep the skiers from having to glide on the same trails as snowmobilers. For the winter season, the resort usually opens the week of Thanksgiving and closes after spring break, when they get the lodge and cabins ready for the summer season. If you’re looking to visit, plan ahead: Prieve said the cabins were booked solid every weekend this past winter. ELK LAKE RESORT AND MARINA 60000 CENTURY DR., BEND 541-480-7378 ELKLAKERESORT.NET

rooms and downstairs has a full-size futon. Other cabins, meanwhile, have one bathroom and a kitchenette. My group’s cabin had two bedrooms and a loft. Perfect for the six guests—and Otto the wiener dog—that rode out on snowmobiles and the shuttle. You can bring food with you, but packing coolers and food on the back of a snowmobile isn’t much fun. The shuttle has a one-bag per person limit, along with one cooler and one “food tote” per group. A member of our group made his own sled— and towed his girlfriend, dog and coolers behind his snowmachine. The breakfasts at the resort are hearty and filling. The sandwiches are also large, and so are the sides. The bar has many local beers on tap and a full compliment of spirits, which leads me to the best part: the Spanish coffee. The staff at the lodge also makes an excellent Bloody Mary and other specialty cocktails. The meals are just what you need to hit the ski trails, to snowshoe or to blast off on your own snowmobile—or a rented one

Grab an inflatable donut and meet at Riverbend Park to enjoy one of Central Oregon’s most popular and majestic attractions the right way. Sit on your biscuit and float your way through downtown Bend taking in all the beautiful scenery— but just be sure you know how to get back to your car with the keys.

YOU’RE GOING TO WANT THE RIGHT SHOES

From jagged rocks on the river to the sizzling pavement, your feet will thank you for putting on some water shoes. Nothing ruins a float like figuring out how to get back to the car without scalding the bottom of your feet. Sandals will not get it done; this is a river, not the beach, and the river will not hesitate to send your flip-flops on a float of their own. Bend Parks and Recreation District

LIFE JACKETS

This is nature’s pool. You’re just floating in it—so leave your chlorine-filled pool toys at home, they won’t help you here. State law requires all boaters, paddleboarders (all ages) and children under 12 to wear a lifejacket on the river. They’re available to rent for free at Riverbend Park, where floaters typically enter the river, and at the Park & Float parking lot near The Pavilion on Simpson and Bradbury.

SECURE ITEMS TO AVOID LITTERING

Summertime is for laughing and having fun— and most importantly, embracing the stressfree environment. What’s not stress-free is losing your keys, wallet or phone in the river because you didn’t take the time to secure your items. Bring a backpack for items to avoid losing them. For things like protein bar wrappers, it might be best to just leave the items in the car. Trust me, you’ll be alright. The float is only 90(ish) minutes long and it’s really hard to post on Instagram when your phone is #waterboarded.

PROTECT THE PLANTS

Bend’s Whitewater Park has three channels: one on the left for floaters who want some light rapids, one for “experts” and those who think they’re experts, and one for wildlife. We know you’re wild, but stay on the left. If you have experience in whitewater or river surfing, take your chances on the middle whitewater channel. Don’t feel like hitting the rapids? Hop out at the Colorado 46

Avenue Bridge and walk the path to McKay Park. It usually turns out to be a very entertaining walk for the left channel travelers and folks with kids re-entering the river. If you go for it and wipe out, no worries—everyone is laughing with you, not at you.

WATER GOOD; BOOZE, NOT SO MUCH

Cooling off in the river water is nice, but having a refreshing beverage is crucial. Hydration is key during the sweltering heat of summer, so be sure to bring along a refillable water bottle. The downfall of the traditional counterpart, the plastic bottle, is it’s not friendly to the environment and it doesn’t keep your “water” cold. (There’s a reason Hydro Flask was founded in Bend.) As for other adult beverages, keep your cans in check. It’s actually against local rules to drink booze on the river, so be cool, peeps. POLE PEDAL PADDLE A scenic race showcasing Bend’s inclusive outdoor culture, from Mt. Bachelor to the Deschutes River BY KEELY DAMARA

Pat Addabbo

Central Oregon is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Runners and athletes need only throw a stone and hit various athletic events, from races for runners and skiers, in the same weekend. But there’s a race that embodies the best that Bend has to offer, all wrapped neatly into one event. From skiing and running to kayaking and biking, the Pole Pedal Paddle takes athletes from the top of Mt. Bachelor to the Deschutes River in the same day. The inaugural Pole Pedal Paddle was in 1976. Amateur and pro athletes have looked forward to this Bend tradition ever since. This year, race organizers expect between 2,400 to 2,700 participants. Athletes compete solo, or as a team, to finish six legs of the race: Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, biking, running, a canoe/kayak/SUP leg and finally, a sprint to the finish. “It physically takes you through the whole community,” says Josh Hancock, an athlete who’s competed in the Pole Pedal Paddle for the past three years. “From the top of Mt. Bachelor all the way to the stadium in the middle of town—it’s cool because it’s a race, but it’s also a celebration of the diversity of activities you can do here.” Hancock, 35, is competing with his girlfriend, Angela Bohlke, this year. The first 48

two years he participated on teams supported by Oregon Adaptive Sports—an organization that provides one-on-one adaptive sports training for individuals with disabilities—feeling out different legs of the race before taking on all the legs himself in 2018 for his first solo race. Hancock is the first paraplegic athlete to finish the Pole Pedal Paddle solo — a feat that took careful planning and some logistical help from friends. Adapting a six-leg race for his ability was no small task. The equipment alone cost nearly $35,000, which included customized equipment including a hand cycle, downhill road bike and sit skis. For the skiing portions, Hancock acquired an adaptive Nordic sit ski and an Alpine mono ski — both of which, he says, have a steep learning curve. Hancock took his first mono ski lessons in 2016 with Oregon Adaptive Sports, just over a year after he injured his spinal cord in a climbing accident. He was medically cleared for the sport, but tackling the mountain was a daunting task—and he was afraid of reinjuring himself. “I had all these screws and rods in my back and I was scared of them breaking,” says Hancock. “Sit skiing has a really steep learning curve, you know, you have to

balance very carefully—skiing slowly on a mono ski is really hard.” While OAS has provided one-on-one training to adaptive athletes since 1996, the organization just recently piloted a handful of community programs from adaptive climbing meet ups to cycling and mountain biking, and plans to launch a full-fledged catalogue of outings and meetups this summer. Kellie Standish of Oregon Adaptive Sports personally spearheaded the community climbing night at Bend Rock Gym, an event for adaptive athletes she says has become really popular. “The idea is just to create a space where people can come together and you know, try out a sport in a really fun inclusive space,” says Standish, who adds that OAS is the only adaptive sports organization in the region. Standish says OAS is supporting 10 adaptive sports teams in this year’s Pole Peddle Paddle: seven teams, two pairs and one individual. Hancock and his girlfriend make up one of the pairs, and are excited to take on the race utilizing both of their strengths. Bohlke is a strong Nordic skier and runner, he says, while he can ski and CONTINUED ON PAGE 50

road bike just about as fast as anyone else on the course. Even with two years of preparation and a team behind him, his solo race included a few, as he put it, “minorly catastrophic” events. Right at the start, while transitioning from the Alpine to the Nordic ski leg, Hancock misjudged a sharp curve in the course and flew down nearly 5 feet into orange netting. “If it was in a movie it would be hilarious and it would have millions of views,” says Hancock. “I would put some of that on YouTube, but it’s also profoundly embarrassing—so it’s only close friends.” Farther down the Nordic course, another skier fell and slid into him, taking him out. On the mountain bike leg, one of his derailleur cables started fraying and losing gears, leaving him stuck in a high gear for the remainder of the leg. “I was stuck in the really high gear and just grinding it out, trying to go up that hill, and I made it,” says Hancock. “It worked out, but it was a struggle and you know, even on the downhill sections I couldn’t go as fast as I wanted.” When he made it to the kayak section, the rudder on his custom surf ski jammed. “I got maybe like a hundred yards from the start and the boat just turned D Boswell Photography

into the bank,” he says. “The nose hit and then the current caught my little outrigger and flipped the boat over and threw me into the water.” He had to abandon ship and swim back to shore, yelling for his team to grab his backup sea kayak to finish the race. He sprinted the final portion in his wheelchair, crossing the finish line with his team at his side. “I loved it and I was thrilled to finish the race. It was a combination of, you know, really three years of preparation,” he says.

After the 2019 Pole Pedal Paddle on May 18, Hancock isn’t taking any breaks. He has a full summer of whitewater rafting and river floating on the Salmon and Rogue rivers planned. 2019 POLE PEDAL PADDLE MAY 18, 2019 VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN BEND PPPBEND.COM REGISTRATION: $100/INDIVIDUAL, $80/YOUTH 13-17, $70/YOUTH 12 & UNDER DISCOUNTS FOR PAIRS AND TEAMS
