SA STRIKES GOLD IN SCOTLAND
South African firm scoops contract for new gold mine equipment
INSIDE:
A
by STAFF REPORTER new $10-million gold extraction plant in Scotland will be built using South African mining expertise and technology. Johannesburg-based Consulmet Metals, a three-year-old, 18-man engineering firm, will design the plant, have it built in South Africa, partially disassemble it before shipment, and commission it at the mine near Loch Lomond in Scotland. The Mail & Guardian reported that operations are due to start in 2013 at the Cononish gold mine in the Grampian highlands of midwestern Scotland after Australian firm Scotgold Resources gained approval for the mine late last year from environmental authorities. About 72,000 tonnes of ore is expected to be extracted annually, producing an estimated 21,000 ounces of gold and 83,000 ounces of silver a year. Gold deposits in a quartz vein were discovered there in the 1980s but were never mined because the gold price was too low at the time. At current prices the operation is expected to contribute £80-million pounds to the Scottish economy. South Africa's economy stands to benefit from Scotgold's order

OUT of 9,000 submissions, the film chosen to open the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah was a music documentary about an artist almost unknown in the States. The film Searching for Sugar Man explores the impact of the singer Rodriguez's music on South Africa, and the phenomenon of his success so far from his home. Rodriguez's songs of homeless life and the working poor in Detroit are sung in a trembling, heartwrenching voice. The title of the documentary was inspired by his song "Sugar Man", about the cold comfort of a drug dealer around the corner. Comparisons to Bob Dylan are obvious, but his music went largely ignored in America. However, despite controversial lyrics which meant he received no radio play, Rodriguez became a cult symbol in South Africa. His anti-Establishment message inspired young South Africans and
encouraged the antiapartheid movement. Unaware of his success on the other side of the globe, Rodriguez faded into obscurity after his second album. He became a construction worker and so little was known about him that he was rumoured to be dead. But two South African journalists spent years
searching for him in order to bring him back to South Africa, where he later performed to sell-out crowds. Rodriguez, who is a recluse but alive and well, attended the showing, which had the audience both crying and cheering. It seems that in spite of everything, this musician's career is not over yet.

“Year of the job” has failed, says DA by STAFF REPORTER
The opposition party has demanded the president “take full responsibility for failing to create jobs and get South Africa’s economy growing in 2011.” In a press release on Wednesday, the Democratic Alliance has criticised Jacob Zuma for his failure to create jobs in 2011. Citing the 2011 State of the Nation address, during which the President outlined his plan for “the year of job creation”, the party’s Parliamentary Leader Lindiwe Mazibuko described the government’s entire plan as being
Lindiwe Mazibuko
“poorly conceived and managed” and that, instead of trying to displace blame, he must take full responsibility for the government’s failure and address it in his 2012 State of the Nation. Mazibuko claimed that the government “relied entirely on the state to drive job creation”, and that the failure of their policies was “anticipated”. They also said that, having met with the President in 2009, he had failed to heed their advice, or even confirm that he has listened to it. The party proposed a fivepoint program of market-based solutions to South Africa’s high unemployment: tax cuts, more incentives, and labour market reforms. They continue to push for a ‘wage subsidy’, which would encourage private sector employers to hire more people – they say this “would ensure that more jobs are created”. The DA demanded that Zuma “explain to the South African people what his plans are to reverse [unemployment]” and that the unemployed need a “President who is willing and able to learn from his mistakes.” According to Trading Economics, unemployment in South Africa has remained a steady 24-25% since January 2010, with 2010 actually seeing SA’s highest levels since 2006.
United Nations predicts fall in HIV cases by STAFF REPORTER South Africa could see a dramatic fall in its number of Aids cases by 2020 after a radical change
of government policy toward the epidemic. SA has the highest numbers of HIV cases worldwide (5.6 million),
Jacob Zuma has pledged millions of rands to reduce instance of infections. Photograph by Utenriksdept
UNAIDS regional director Sheila Tlou, citing a “lack of political commitment before”, has told a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland that “by 2020 there will be massive reductions in South Africa” and there “is a turnaround in the new government under Zuma which is committed” to the prevention of HIV/ AIDS. In direct contrast with the previous administration (Mbeki's health minister advocated vegetables rather than medication to treat AIDS), Jacob Zuma has expanded his government's AIDS treatment programs and has released a plan to halve HIV infections over the course of five years. Tlou expanded that the region was “known as the centre of the epidemic” - of the 34 million people living with HIV, three quarters live in East and Southern Africa. Botswana Health Minister for four years, Tlou is a nursing professor based in Johannesburg and stated: 'There has been quite a lot of progress since 1997 with a 25 percent reduction in new infections in our region'. Jacob Zuma, despite having famously said that having a shower after sex "cut the risk of contracting HIV", has shown his government is radically committed to cutting the epidemic in South Africa, pledging millions of rand to reduce the instances of infection.

On ‘Daredevil base jumper crashes into Table Mountain’ Colin Macrae: I really hope the provincial government charges this idiot for a waste of strapped medical resources. Confiscate his passport and stick him in Pollsmoor till he pays, then we will see how brave he is! Wayne: @Colin – You’re the idiot… He’s in a private hospital being paid for by his private
medical insurance. If anything he’s contributing to the South African economy! Go back to your exciting game of tiddlywinks! Colin Macrae: No Wayne you are the idiot, he was rescued by The Metro Emergency Medical Services, a Directorate of the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health that provides quality emergency care. These services are expensive and are for the cash strapped citizens of the Western Cape, paid for by their taxes. What if there was a proper accident and the helicopter and medics were needed and not a self inflicted injury from a stupid self aggrandising publicity stunt? Hazel Hill: The idiot of the day (Wayne).
On ‘Giraffes in the firing line’ Fiona: This is shocking. What is wrong with these people? Anyone who hunts animals for pleasure need to be shot. Claudine Fourie: Utterly disgusting! Giraffes are BEAUTIFUL, INNOCENT, HARMLESS animals who should be loved and cared for. I do not have the same sentiments for lions, leopards, cheetahs and ‘humans’. Vera: That’s a very shortsighted view of things. Lions, cheetahs,

leopards, etc are also beautiful animals and extremely helpless against human cruelty. They just happen to be carnivores! We need these predators as well. Hunting them for fun is no better than hunting giraffes. And we need predators to keep the populations of other animals at normal levels. You kill lions etc and you will have an overpopulation of giraffes, etc, and you are back to hunting them, for fun or for the need to curb the population. You need to keep the big picture in mind. Nature regulates itself, you take one part away, the balance is broken and a whole lot of problems follow. Pieter: Yip get rid of hunters. That would make it impossible for the game farmer to make a living out of game. That would put an end to game farming. Unfortunately that would also put an end to most of the larger game species, as the gene pool for them is VERY small. Hunting should be encouraged. Professional hunters and marksmen should be on hand to prevent the animal suffering. The meat should not be wasted but turned into biltong or given to the locals for food. The leftovers should then be put out to feed vultures. Nature conservation is dependent on hunting. Sam Ham: @Claudine, I thought you were a smart person until the part about you being OK with lions, leopards and the like being hunted? All nature should be preserved.

On ‘Johannesburg “safer than Cape Town”’ Carla: This is quite silly, how can people who do not live here gauge it.. I have lived in all and never felt safer than I do now. I understand that if you live on the other side of the track you may have a different experience, I am just sharing mine. Frank Simmers: Total rubbish, are these guys trying to sell apartments in downtown Joburg? Let them go walking in Hillbrow at any time of the day on their own. On second thoughts, I will invite these guys to come and sample Joburg with me the next time I feel suicidal and want to end it all quickly. David: Then Carla, if you have to live in a city to write about its crime levels, just about all 50 of these results must be wrong. According to police stats (also wrong of course!) Cape Town has the highest murder rate in South Africa. And the highest levels of drug and alcohol related crime. And that’s after losing half the dockets, so crime is actually far worse than we believe throughout the country, but relative to Johannesburg, Cape Town is a less safe city. Why must we only walk in Hillbrow, Frank? Come and walk with me in the Cape Flats if you’re feeling suicidal. Then we

Presumably data that would have produced a good result for Cape Town. Squatter Camp dodger: In South Africa, no matter which city, stay away from the squatter camps or informal settlements if you’re not a black South African. It is not safe, if you really want to see Soweto, make sure you do it with an organised tour. rationalistx: I lived in Jo’burg for many years and it was the most dangerous city I’ve ever lived in. A friend was strangled in his bed, a work-mate stabbed to death on his way to work and several of my colleagues came to work carrying guns. The bullets had to be handed in at the reception and the empty guns locked away in their desks. They don’t call Jo’burg the murder capital of the world for nothing. Sam Ham: Have to say , while these debates are interesting, I find it sad that any city in SA is the crime capital of the world and everyone is arguing about passing the title on. The fact that its up for debate shows there is something terribly wrong and energies of everyone would be better spent trying to eradicate crime.

The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD
Strange weather we’re having… CHEAP shot alert. I normally wouldn’t engage in them, you understand, but this is just too good to resist. When an organisation presents so obvious a target, it would be insulting not to. Here goes. The governmenthas decided that it can control the weather. Isn’t that genius? Isn’t it just the cutest thing you’ve ever heard? To explain: there’s a bill in the works (yes, another one) called The South African Weather Services Amendment Bill. The bill states that anybody who issues a “severe weather warning” and who is not the SAWS will be shoved into prison for ten years and face fines that could total millions. That’s more harsh than some rape sentences, more aggressive than sentences for people who have broken the speed limit by a hundred kilometres. It’s wrathof-God punishment. Something like this actually might make sense in South Africa, where our weather isn’t all that benign and does, every so often, swing back a hairy paw and swat at the country with floods, hailstorms, heatwaves and tornadoes. There was even

Building a better South Africa in 2012 HAPPY New Year! 2012 is in full swing and it’s already looking jam-packed. As the Democratic Alliance continues to prove that we can govern, and that where we govern we can provide an Open Opportunity for all South Africans, it’s important that we continue the fight against corruption, poverty and crime as well as the many other issues that continue to plague our country today. In order to achieve success and build a better South Africa we need to choose our battles wisely. The success of our campaigns is dependent on your support, so we’d like you to help us choose what to focus our energies on in 2012. We already have a number of campaigns on the go which we will continue into the year. The biggest of these at the moment is No To Secrecy, our Global Campaign against the Secrecy Bill, which is gaining huge momentum, with four peaceful protests taking place in New York, Mumbai, Perth and London over the next four weeks. an earthquake during the World Cup in 2010 – no, not joking. So I get the spirit of the law. After all, an erroneous flash flood warning broadcast to, say, Alex township would cause a lot of havoc. But the problems with it are big enough to have their own postcode. For starters, what, exactly, is a severe weather warning? If I mention to my mate that there’s a storm brewing, while in earshot of a government official, am I liable to get put into a tiny cell with a 400kg man named Goboda because I am not a member of SAWS? Secondly, there is the issue of commercial services, some of whom report the weather and have their own teams of meteorologists. Shipping forecast companies, exporters, boating organisations – all spend at least some of their time broadcasting weather updates to their members and employees. Why shouldn’t they be allowed to issue a weather warning? Oh, that’s right. Because then SAWS wouldn’t have their precious monopoly. I’m going to come right out say it. This is stupid. SAWS is stupid. Their bill is cosmically, ridiculously stupid. Ten years in prison? Millions of rands? You people are having a laugh. Mind you, did you ever see that film The Weatherman? In it Nicolas Cage plays a psychotic weatherman who wanders around carrying a competition-grade bow and arrow. Maybe those tame weather people are a bit more hardcore than we thought. by joining the group on Facebook, attending the protest in London or simply submitting a photo to the group of you and your mates with black tape over your mouth symbolising the impact the bill will have on our country. The other campaign on our agenda is the Global Voting Campaign which focuses on the right for all South Africans abroad to be able to register and vote conveniently wherever they are. The campaign also focuses on voter education to ensure that when 2014 arrives all South Africans are ready to make their voices heard and vote in the national election. We’re also raising money to buy desks and chairs for an underprivileged school in Diepsloot, Johannesburg in our Adopt-A-School campaign. This project is in co-ordination with the Ubunye-Unity Charity, and we’ll be telling you a lot more about it in the next few months. But now it’s your turn. Visit our Global Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/ DemocraticAllianceAbroad) and vote for what you think we should be focusing on this year. You can even add a few suggestions – we want to hear from you! This is your opportunity to get involved and make a difference. Boris’ new budget Tube air conditioning scheme gets trial run Mind the Gap! Colin goes Trouserless on the Tube...
by COLIN MACRAE THERE is a social media meme doing the rounds – #thatawkwardmoment, that sums up the entire tube experience, eye contact is forbidden, smiles are suspect and generally you are conditioned to feel as about as comfortable on the underground as an investment banker at an Occupy demonstration. The pros come prepared with Kindles and iPhones at the ready and only look up when they have to plot the path from seat to exit. For the less prepared there is always the Metro/ Evening Standard option which, let’s be honest here, the only reason you would read such drivel is the alternative is too scary to contemplate, the acknowledgement and, shock horror, even interaction with your fellow passengers. So when the opportunity arose to disrupt this social contract, I was all for it, or more appropriately I was all for getting it off, my trousers that is. The No Pants on the Subway has been around for 11 years in New York and the London version No Trousers on the Tube for three, thankfully the organisers realised the direct translation from The US version to the UK would result in arrest rather than amusement. Now the event takes place simultaneously in 59 cites
worldwide, which makes you think that if we applied the same kind of global collaboration on something like arms trading the world will be better place, though I suppose there is more money in in weapons than underpants even though some of the revealing outfits on show
There were about 300 of us willing to strip off for the noble goal of breaking down that invisible barrier. where simply to die for. Not every day you see racy faux leopard skin briefs on the tube. All told there were about 300 of us willing to strip off for the noble goal of breaking down that invisible barrier and the results were encouraging, if not exactly a slam dunk. It started well, with a secret signal bringing on a mass strip of the participants peppered along the platform, much to the surprise of the unsuspecting commuters. Then for me personally there was the delightful draft of the arriving tube, being of Scottish descent, I am no stranger to the feeling of a refreshing breeze on my unmentionables and the incoming tube did not disappoint. Though, sadly on the tube, there
is no denying the steely resolve of the career commuters, who even after a sly peek resisted the urge for a second glance, never mind a full on stare. Though it was the kids, bless their socks, that broke the ice, oblivious to adult convention they pointed, stared, giggled and pulled on mummys’ coats until the ice was broken, smiles broke out across the carriages and camera phones were out to capture the moment, if not for posterity, at least for a giggle over a glass of wine at home. Of course you see more on a beach, but we are a long way from Clifton, this was the dreary Northern Line in mid-winter London and although this was no Dunkirk, it was a small chink in the armour of the dreaded London commute, where every smile is a victory!

Foreign exchange limits increase by STAFF REPORTER THE South African Reserve Bank’s Financial Surveillance Department, (previously known as the Exchange Control Department) has announced several changes since its renaming in August 2011. THE changes are consistent with the revised functions and responsibilities of the Department after the Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan, announced the shift from exchange controls to a system of prudential regulation. Improved surveillance will replace unnecessary administrative controls. "Since financial surveillance is an important pillar of financial stability, the drafting of a document relating to a modernised policy and legislative framework has already commenced. The broad strategy remains prudential management of foreign exposure risk, along with improved management of capital flows and maintaining macroeconomic and financial stability," Gordhan said. On 23 December 2011 as part of its strategy to further relax foreign exchange control rules for individuals, the Financial Surveillance Department announced that SA resident individuals may remit funds abroad for investment purposes
within the R1 million discretionary allowance per calendar year. The changes reaffirm the government’s position to move away from stringent controls over foreign exchange flows out of the country. The discretionary allowance includes the following: a) Donations to Missionaries b) Maintenance Transfers c) Monetary Gifts and Loans d) Travel Allowance e) Study Allowance f) Alimony and child support g) Wedding expenses h) Foreign Capital allowance (no tax clearance required) Applicants must be over the age of 18 and of good standing. The limit of R1 million per calendar year, without the requirement of a tax clearance certificate is subject to documentary requirements applicable to the nature of the transfer. The R4 million Foreign Investment Allowance is still available over and above this with the requirement of a Foreign Tax Clearance Certificate. Rand dips slightly after strong showing THE South African Rand traded between 7.91 and 8.13 to the US Dollar during the 16th and the 23rd of January 2012. The Rand also traded between 12.25 and 12.45 to the British Pound during the same period. The Rand has had a strong week, strengthening against major currencies as investors ventured into riskier markets. Possible reasons for the Rand strength can be attributed to the unchanging of the domestic repo rate and the strengthening of the Euro against the US Dollar. "The rand marches on and some risk appetite has returned," a local currency trader said. "The environment is optimistic with equities looking quite good; however, I think this move will be short-lived as the Eurozone is far from being out of the woods," he added. Although it ended slightly weaker on
Friday, after reaching a 2 month high against the Greenback, the Rand had still remained under the important psychological level of R8 to the US Dollar. The Rand started the new week off weaker against the US Dollar as news that Greece is still struggling to sort out their major debt problems and could default. “The rand has stopped strengthening after Greek authorities and the holders of Greek debt failed to reach consensus about how best to restructure the terms of their existing Greek bond exposure. With risk aversion creeping back into the market on the aforementioned EU debt concerns... it is poised to give back some of last week’s gains.” said Absa Capital in a note. Olympics presents the perfect opportunity for UK/ SA trade by NIKKI MCDONALD THE London 2012 Olympics and its trade opportunities between Britain and South Africa was the key focus of the South African Trade Event hosted by Merton Chamber of Commerce and Go South Go on Thursday 19 January. This seminar at Cannizaro House in Wimbledon was a great opportunity for more than 80 exhibitors and London business people to network, focussing on how they could increase or facilitate trade opportunities between UK and South Africa. Exhibitors were joined by some fantastic guests presenting valuable information on how sports events and trading opportunities between two countries can work successfully. The likes of Avi Lasarow of Trimega Laboratories, Brian Treherne & Nicholas Armour of the UKTI, Diana Sterk CEO of Merton Chamber of Commerce, Professor Dick Fisher, Head of St Mary’s University College 2012 preparations and Robert Walker, key advisor to London companies in accessing global sports opportunities and encouraging them to take part in UKTI supported sports trade missions and opportunities, all played their part in the event providing valuable information around trade opportunities between South Africa and the UK as well as highlighting the effect of sport and how it can bring two countries together in so many ways.
Ian Smith, Director and Linda Taylor, Chair of Go South Go welcomed the guests with a fantastic introduction, emphasising the importance of the upcoming Olympics, the opportunity of hosting the South African Olympic Team during their stay in South London, and how this has increased awareness of the huge potential for trade opportunities between UK and South Africa. Thanks to today’s technology, guests had a live web chat with a career diplomat, Chris Trott, the consul General of British High Commission in Cape Town, who took up his post there in early 2011. It was fantastic to hear from the ‘horse’s mouth’ about the trade opportunities in South Africa, highlighting not only potential sectors to trade in but also explaining the culture and how easy it was to trade in South Africa with the invaluable support of UKTI as well as the South African High Commission. In Trott’s words ‘South Africa is the gateway to the emerging markets in Africa’. Yusuf Timol of the South African High Commission emphasised the importance of trade and how this would achieve South Africa’s goal of job creation as well as highlighting key sectors for trade opportunities, namely, agriculture, healthcare, education, energy & power, oil and gas.

Founder of the Scoin Shop chain by FRED QUICK
BULLET BIOGRAPHY • Born: Manchester, England in 1955 • Served as lieutenant in the South African army • Owner of The South African Gold Coin Exchange since 1992 • Founder of Scoin Shop, the world’s only gold coin retail chain • Finalist of the World Entrepreneur awards competition, organised by Ernst & Young in 2008
IN 1980 Alan Demby rented his first offices and started coin dealing on a full time basis under the company name of Gold Club. Since then his business has been on the up. In 1992, he bought The South African Gold Coin Exchange and went on to open the first Scoin Shop seven years later. To date, there are 25 Scoin Shops throughout the UK and South Africa that turnover approximately £60m per year. How did you first get involved with dealing in gold coins? I was called up to the army for two years and during my service a friend suggested that we deal in Kruger Rands. I’d never seen one before but nevertheless we put an advertisement in a newspaper, did a deal and bought a few coins. At the time (1977) I was based in Pretoria and the instruction
came from my friend to go to the gold exchange and sell the coins we had bought. It all started from there. How has your business evolved over the years? In the army I learnt about buying and selling coins and met some coin dealers. So when I finished training I decided to go into it full time. I dealt via the newspapers and two years later started the Gold Club. It was just a little one man show but it slowly built up and then in 1989 I bought a company called the Gold Investment Corporation from SAGE Holdings. This company was involved with selling Kruger Rands on a credit system, so it was a logical move
for us as we had already made our coin sets available to purchase on clients’ credit cards. In 1992 we went on to buy The South African Gold Coin Exchange which is the brand used today. You went on to set up Scoin Shops – tell us more. In 1999 we relocated from the centre of Johannesburg to Sandton. Here there is a huge shopping centre called Sandton City where we opened our first Scoin Shop to try and attract the tourist market. This was successful and gradually more locals also became interested. Today we have around 50 stores throughout the country selling bullion and collectable coins. What has led to the success of the Scoin Shops? I think Scoin Shops have been successful because we democratise gold buying for the man on the street and pick themed coins that attract customers. Our Mandela medallions for example have sold very well. You now have Scoin Shops in the UK. Why did you choose to come here and what challenges have you faced? The conventional wisdom for South African companies wanting to expand is to come to the UK. The time difference isn’t

an issue, it’s a simple flight away and of course there is no language barrier. We have three stores so far and plan to develop further. It’s tough to get established here because starting costs are much higher. However we have done some good deals with the British Royal Mint, we’ve got the rights to promote and market the Manchester United medallions which have been very successful and were involved with the Kate and William coins. How did you come to be affiliated with the Nelson Mandela foundation? From travelling to many different
coin shows around the world I discovered that the mint of Norway had assembled a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate program. They approached the institute around 10 years ago and arranged to make a medallion of each winner of the Nobel peace prize. Royalties from the sale of these coins go to the Nobel Institute and to the winner’s foundation. Through our involvement with the mint of Norway millions of rands have gone to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which is a fantastic cause. To see the full interview go to www.thesouthafrican.com

Tips to the top:
Pushing Boundaries ORGANISATIONAL culture: what is it and how should you understand it? There have been many books and articles written on organizational culture and many offer poor understandings of it. So here are some points to consider when asking how it should be understood. 1. When management and leadership writers talk about ‘culture’ what they usually mean is how people behave and work but ‘culture’ is bigger and broader than this 2. Culture is also as much to do with thinking as doing. Specifically, it is how they ‘think creatively’ as much as how they behave and work . 3. Organisational culture about how people push against the limits of accepted norms of behaviour and work as well as it is about how much they remain within accepted constraints of those norms. 4. Nor is culture about conformity - this assumes similarity – culture is as much about difference and diversity as similarity 5. Don’t assume that boards, leaders, and management teams

‘control’ culture – they don’t, they control behavior and work patterns – not thought. Tip: allow your thoughts to push against conformities – that way you’ll begin to change organizational culture without separating yourself from it. Business PHocus PAUL HARRISON
“Compliance! Argh!”
THAT was the actual comment made by a salesman when he was going on about a new approach he was taking in generating new clients. You could see him light up as he spoke about it, but when it came to why the deal hadn’t come together, that was his response. Now this isn’t unusual. There can often be a clash between new business developers and what compliance will allow them to do. This is fair as a lot of the time if anything goes wrong, the compliance department will be pulled over the coals. They key to success, especially in a big business is to be able to find a happy medium between the new business and compliance. Getting a compliance rep to think like a sales person and a sales person to understand where compliance is coming from. So for a sales person, being able to take an opportunity for compliance and then making some amendments to bring it under the realms of acceptability for compliance, is where a company will become very successful… and law abiding! What do you do in your job? Liaise with people for weddings, baptisms, funerals etc. Compile and edit a weekly newsletter for the parish. In charge of parish
website, control database, plan and coordinate social functions and help prepare and plan spiritual retreats and services. Handle all media enquiries and hall bookings. Liaise directly with the Archbishop, Bishop and other clergy when required. Also do volunteer work with children (seven to nine-year-olds) and help prepare them for their First Holy Communion. This involves preparing lessons, checking homework, parents meetings, planning events and services. Volunteer work with teenagers (13-16) to help prepare them for their Confirmation. Once again it involves preparing lessons but I also arrange teambuilding weekends away which although spiritually based, are also about having fun, letting their hair down and being themselves away from the confines of parents and church. What is the most exciting thing about your job? As a practising Catholic and a people person I get to have the best of both worlds (my faith and daily challenges in the work place). What do you do in your spare time? I make picture frames, greating cards, bookmarks and ornaments, all with an African theme, and sell them at craft markets and festivals. I am also a fun-loving party girl who has never grown up.

Ibiza: All sun and no crowds Leave the wellies in the wardrobe and get the sunscreen out instead. Ibiza is calling and you can enjoy it all to yourself.
by LEIGH JOHNSTON AS I relax on a lounge in a beachfront bar, sipping on a half-price cocktail and watching the sun set on another cloudless (and crowdless) day, it’s easy to forget that Ibiza is better known for its party scene than its appeal as the perfect location for a relaxing beach-side holiday. Everyone knows that Ibiza is the world’s party mecca, a sun drenched island illuminated by the neon lights of the world’s biggest and best clubs. But while it has rightfully earned its title as the world’s clubbing capital, those willing to write Ibiza off as little more than a partying hotspot risk missing out on one of Spain’s hidden gems. Beyond the clubs In fact, with the island’s high season all wrapped-up (and the party crowds nursing their hangovers back home), Ibiza’s iconic clubs have closed their doors until the sun returns later this year. Meaning all that’s left are long sunny days, white sandy beaches, crystal blue Mediterranean waters and an island desperate for tourists. Now truly is the time of year when you can enjoy Ibiza all to yourself. And as London’s winter chills our bones, there is no better time to catch some last gasp sunshine than on an island who’s true beauty can only be found when the neon lights are turned off. And for the traveller that knows where to look, too-good-to-be-true deals abound.
Packages including return flights, seven nights accommodation and an all inclusive buffet are available for as little as ₤300 per person. The island life Meanwhile on the island, there is plenty to do for holidaymakers interested in more than a hangover on the beach. San Antonio, one of Ibiza’s largest ports and most popular holiday destinations is still enjoying warm days and is buzzing with companies offering watersports and day cruises. And with the crowds long since dwindled, a last minute holiday to Ibiza at this time of year means you’re first in line for everything from adventure sports to restaurants. For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, you can hire a car (or a quad bike) from 50 Euro a day, hit the road and find your own piece of Ibizan paradise known only to locals. Places such as Cala Salada on the island’s western coast are largely untouched by tourists and are the best way to combine island life with a taste of Spanish culture.
Have the beach all to yourself
Catch the winter warmth in Ibiza
And with everything on this island only an hour’s drive away, (maybe an hour and a half via the island’s well connected bus service), trips to Ibiza Town and the island’s famed hippy market in Las Dalias – a Saturday, island tradition – are easily accessible.
Some winter sun And of course, with temperatures hovering a good 10 degrees higher at this Mediterranean hotspot than in London this time of year, there’s always the option of just finding yourself a spot anywhere on Ibiza’s spectacular coastline, rolling out
the beach towel and just lazing the days away. And afterwards, why not join me in the beach-front bar for a cheap cocktail? I’ll be the guy on the lounge, enjoying the view all to myself. There’s never been a better time to travel to Ibiza. Your shout! www.thesouthafrican.com/travel

Emily’s ‘Rhodesian’ love affair Zimbabwean author Emily Barroso has written a provocative and compelling first novel in which she brings the ‘Rhodesia’ of her childhood to life.
by LINDSAY JARDINE EMILY Barroso was born in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) and after much toing and froing between Spain, Zimbabwe and South Africa, she now lives in London. As the war engulfs the country, the novel’s narrator, Jayne, is forced, after an armed attack, to flee her childhood and farm with her family. I asked Emily: In After the Rains one gets the feeling there is a suggestion of your ’love of the land’. Have you been back since you left in 1980? I love the land, though it exists for me as an imaginative landscape now. Zimbabwe has a furious beauty; there is a primal connection to the land that subsumes you. I haven’t been back since the early ‘90s, but not through a lack of desire, life circumstances have prevented me.
I would love to return. Did you base Jayne or any other character on someone you knew? The characters are all fictitious. However, in writing this novel I read widely about the war. The situations my characters find themselves in are authentic rather than ‘true.’ Without giving too much away, the plane scene is based on catastrophic events that occurred in Rhodesia in 1978. My adopted dad’s family were directly impacted by that tragedy. Enoch is a character who creates some ambivalence within the reader. What were you trying to achieve with this characterisation? Enoch is torn between his feelings for his childhood friend who is the daughter, from his family’s perspective, of ‘the hated settlers’ and his loyalty to his own family and political ideals: the bigger picture of freedom for the country, which in the case of the freedom fighters often meant acts of violence against those they saw as having oppressed their people and stolen their land. One can be sympathetic to, and even love people who have completely different views to oneself. The ambivalence is expected, given the enormity of what happens and the betrayal. You end the novel with Jayne heading to Robert Mugabe Avenue. Bearing in mind how Mugabe’s popularity has decreased considerably, would you like to see the avenue renamed? To what? Reconciliation Avenue. Your biography says you were
deeply affected by the Zimbabwe land seizures. What do you think will become of Zimbabwe? Has it reached the point of no return? Is there any way forward? I was deeply affected. The land seizures have been a backward glance rather than a forward move for the country no matter how hard you argue the historical causes. I don’t believe in ‘the oppressed mimicking the oppressor’ to put it crudely. What happened and continues to happen in terms of the violent seizures is horrendous. I do however, believe there should have been fairer distribution of the land and opportunity for those prepared to love and nurture it; the land should benefit the economy, not the cronies. I don’t believe it has reached the point of no return. Where there is life there can be faith, which is a choice. Many are working constructively, and often very bravely, for change in Zimbabwe. Personally, I support HOPE.HIV (their Zimbabwean child/youth projects) and SOAP via Zimbabwe Aid Fund (who support destitute pensioners), by giving a quarter of the cover price of books bought through my shop (not through other distributors) to these charities. At the very least, a way forward might be to continue and start dialogues between all Zimbabweans across the divides: media debates, restoration talk followed by actual restoration. Of course the people are hungry and need to be fed, but let the people bring their ideas to the table as well. www.thesouthafrican.com/ zimbabwe
Australia supports Zim cricket
A top-class cricket facility was launched in Kwekwe by Matthew Neuhaus, the Australian Ambassador to Zimbabwe. by STAFF REPORTER THE $15,000 John Gardiner Mbizo Cricket Ground in Mbizo is funded by the Gardiner family's Bomko and Lays brands, according to The Zimbabwean. It will boost national cricket league side Mid-West Rhinos’ search for talented youngsters. Neuhaus said his country would support Zimbabwe in rebuilding
its cricket team, which has recently returned to the test arena after years of squabbling between Zimbabwe Cricket management and senior players. He told hundreds of schoolchildren who had gathered at the centre where the Kenyan cricket team took them through a coaching clinic, that top quality facilities are not necessary to
groom a good cricketer. Ambassador Neuhaus said many great international cricket players had humble beginnings, where they realised their talents through playing in the street. “Don Bradman used to practise using a stick and hitting the ball on a corrugated bin, but went on to become Australia’s greatest player,” he said.

MIND THE RUCK ROB FLUDE
The start of an era THE word “new” means many things to many people. Some people see it as an exciting development, one laced with possibility, and the kind for which one needs no motivation to spring out of bed each morning to get one’s grubby mits on it. Others see it with much trepidation, plastering warning signs everywhere. Fortunately, we can view 2012 with renewed vigour and optimism. It is the year of the dragon, after all. We’ve all suddenly developed the kind of butterflies in the stomach that one gets during the first month of dating. The new Springbok coach gets announced on Friday after what seems like an eternity of deliberation. Perhaps sourcing a viable candidate has been harder than SARU thought? But who in their right mind would want to be employed by an organisation that overtly stated that the previous coach was selected for “reasons other than rugby”?! If reports that have recently surfaced are true, SARU have got our man, Heyneke Meyer. I mentioned last year in a column that SARU should get him at all costs, much akin to SA Cricket who nabbed a highly-sought after
Gary Kirsten. It’s four years too late, but he is the people’s choice and it’s his time. A new captain to succeed John Smit will also need to be anointed. Early favourites for the vacancy are Schalk Burger, Juan Smith, and Bismarck du Plessis. My early suspicions are that if Meyer is appointed he might want to start his own dynasty with no remnants of the former regime, and hence select a rank outsider like the uncapped Josh Strauss. Turning to on-field matters, the Reds will want to repeat their 2011 Super Rugby success, while other contenders will be the Crusaders, Waratahs, Sharks and Stormers. The jury will be out to see if the Lions can build on their Currie Cup success, while the Bulls have raided the youthful, exciting stocks of most other unions. The Cheetahs’ lack of quality depth (most of which wears the black and white of the Sharks!) will
Who would want to be employed by an organisation that stated that the previous coach was selected for “reasons other than rugby”?! once again be a factor in a long, gruelling campaign. They’re always good for a few surprises though, such as beating the Crusaders last year. Another exciting prospect is the return to traditional mid-year tours, with England (who could be under the tutelage of former
Sri Lanka takes final ODI by two wickets by STAFF REPORTER
SACHITHRA Senanayake hit a six off the penultimate ball as Sri Lanka recorded a sensational two-wicket win over South Africa in the fifth and final One-Day International (ODI) at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, to salvage some pride as the hosts took the series 3-2. According to the Express Tribune, Robin Peterson bowled Bok coach Nick Mallett) gracing South Africa’s shores for a threetest series. Disturbingly, that these games are being held during the Super Rugby tournament, with little preparation time for the southern hemisphere teams, is cause for concern. The Tri-Nations has been phased out and Argentina enters the equation, with The Rugby Championship kicking off in August and running until early October. The prospect of two classic test matches happening per weekend is certainly something we haven’t been accustomed to for the last 17 years! With so much rugby, the Currie Cup seems almost inconsequential. It’s also not clear if the ruling will stand that only six teams will compete this year. This has certainly ruffled the feathers of the smaller unions. So with little over five weeks to go, my appetite is certainly in need of some rugby! Buckle up, this could just be a brilliant year, even for Bok fans…

the final over with six to get and he obliged, taking the wickets of Nuwan Kulasekara and then Lahiru Thirimanne before Senanayake’s strike took Sri Lanka past the 313-run target. It was a disappointing day, however, for South Africa captain AB de Villiers and his predecessor Graeme Smith. While the lefthander hit his first ODI century since 2009, de Villiers made a
whirlwind 125 to give the innings the final boost as South Africa crossed the 300-run mark. De Villiers hit his 12th ODI century but for the second successive time South Africa failed to defend a competitive total. Man-of-the-series De Villiers said,"We have a lot to work on before touring New Zealand next month, but I’m very happy with the way the team fought to the end.”

Anderson downed in third round of Aussie Open by STAFF REPORTER
TOMAS Berdych of the Czech Republic finally broke the dogged resistance of South Africa’s Kevin Anderson to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Friday. It took 150 minutes and 29 games before Berdych finally broke Anderson’s serve – with the world No.7 failing in eight previous
attempts, Sky Sports reported. Once Berdych got the breakthrough, the end came quickly as he chalked up a 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 victory. Berdych said,“It was not easy at all, and especially the first two sets [were] really about just a small chance that I was waiting for.” “I got some chances to make a break during the first two sets, but
he played well, served well and just saved [his serve] every time.” But the experienced Berdych knew that the lone break didn’t equate to an automatic win. “You still have to stay really focused, because it could be really the tricky moment,” he said. Berdych will meet Spain’s Nicholas Almagro in the fourth round on Sunday.

IS MEYER THE MAN? Despite rumours of Divvy’s temporary return, the money appears to be on Heyneke Meyer as new Bok coach
T
by STAFF REPORTER he new Springbok coach, set to be announced on Friday, is likely to be Blue Bulls director of rugby, Heyneke Meyer. According to a “top-level source within the South African Rugby Union (Saru)”, Meyer had met with Saru CEO Jurie Roux on the weekend to finalise his contract as Bok coach, the Cape Times reported. This comes after Ireland coach Gert Smal said no to the job as his Irish contract only expires in 2013, plus he didn’t want to disrupt his children’s schooling in Dublin by bringing them back to South Africa. Smal was reportedly Saru’s “first choice”, according to the source, and his decision to turn down the Bok job left the national body “very disappointed”. Smal’s success in winning two Currie Cups with WP in 2000 and 2001, guiding the Stormers to a Super 12 semi-final in 2004, his exemplary transformation record with the Cape Union and then his experience as the Bok and Ireland forwards coach since 2004 made him Saru’s preferred candidate Last week rumours surfaced that current coach Peter de Villiers would be reinstated on an interim basis as Meyer was struggling to get out of his contract at the Blue Bulls. However, Meyer and the Blue Bulls Company were able to agree terms to release him from his position, according to Rapport. As Bulls coach, Meyer, who is expected to sign a two-year contract later this week, has won four Currie Cups (one shared) and a Super 14 title.
It’s widely believed that Springbok coach Peter de Villiers (left) will officially be replaced by Heyneke Meyer of the Blue Bulls (right) this week.
He was also the favourite to take over from Jake White in 2008, but was pipped by De Villiers in a Saru president’s council vote.
Meyer’s Springbok management team is likely to be finalised this week, with Saru hoping to include Rassie Erasmus as
technical adviser, Paul Treu as assistant coach and Jacques Nienaber as defence coach. However, Meyer, may want to
bring in his own support staff. The Boks play their first Test of 2012 against England on 9 June in Durban.
