London-based South African banker’s parting shot loses Wall Street firm billions
bank’s UK offices a year ago. In his letter Smith claimed, “The firm has veered so far from the place I joined right out of college that I can no longer in good conscience say I identify with what it stands for.” “And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it,” he said. “I am sad to say that I look around today and see virtually no trace of the culture that made me love working for this firm for many years. I no longer have the pride, or the belief.” The Stanford University economics graduate blamed the bank’s decline in moral fibre on its president Gary D Cohn and chief executive officer Lloyd C Blankfein. He believed this loss was the bank’s “single most serious threat to its long-run survival.” “It makes me ill how callously people talk about ripping their

SA BANKER COSTS GOLDMAN SACHS $2 BN
by STAFF REPORTER GOLDMAN Sachs Group has seen $2.15bn of its market value wiped out after a midlevel executive, the Johannesburg-born Greg Smith, slammed CEO Lloyd Blankfein’s management and the firm’s treatment of clients. London-based Smith hit the news after publishing his open resignation letter in the New York Times last week, calling the Wall Street bank “morally bankrupt.” After Smith made the accusations, the shares dropped 3,4% in New York trading on Wednesday, the third-biggest decline in the 81-company Standard & Poor’s 500 financials index. Smith, who resigned as executive director and head of the firm’s US equity derivatives business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, had worked for Goldman Sachs for 12 years, starting as a summer intern. clients off. Over the last 12 months I have seen five different managing directors refer to their own clients as ‘muppets’, sometimes over internal e-mail.” The bank, whose client list ranges from governments to major international companies, was quick to deny the accusations levelled by Smith, saying they were “disappointed” by his assertions. Smith’s letter has attracted a great deal of public comment, many
questioning why it took him so long to come to this realisation. But his former King David High School teacher has come to his defence. “He was a remarkable young man, exceptionally intelligent with an integrity that is probably unequalled,” Elliot Wolf, a retired headmaster said in an interview with Reuters. “A remarkable man with high principles” continued from page 1... before winning a scholarship to Stanford University in the US. Wolf called the banker “An absolutely remarkable man with high principles. That was already part of his character when he was very, very young.” In his letter, Smith named his proudest moments in life as: “Getting a full scholarship to Stanford, being selected as a Rhodes Scholar national finalist, and winning a bronze medal for table tennis at the Maccabiah Games, known as the Jewish Olympics.” He said these achievements had “all come through hard work, with no shortcuts. Goldman Sachs today has become too much about shortcuts and not enough about achievement. It just doesn’t feel right to me anymore.”

On Human Rights Day Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo will reunite at Hyde Park.
Graceland comes to London by NICOLE HOLGATE FOLLOWING the announcement that rockumentary Under African Skies, examining the impact of Paul Simon’s album Graceland in South Africa, will feature in the London Sundance film festival, Simon has been confirmed to headline Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park on 15 July. Alongside other hits, he will perform groundbreaking masterwork Graceland in its entirety. He will be joined on stage by Jimmy Cliff on songs including ‘Harder They Come’ and ‘Too Many Rivers To Cross’, before Ladysmith Black Mambazo take to
the stage for a Graceland reunion, a UK first since 1987. “Graceland is considered one of the greatest of albums of all time,” said Hamish Dodds, President and CEO of Hard Rock International. “We look forward to welcoming Paul Simon to the Hard Rock Calling stage and celebrating Graceland’s 25th anniversary.” Hard Rock Calling takes place from 13 to 15 July 2012. The 2011 shows saw more than 150,000 music fans flock to Hyde Park for a weekend of live music. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday 23 March and are priced at £55 plus booking fee.
ON 21 March 1960, 69 people lost their lives in Sharpeville. They were protesting against the pass laws intended to segregate South Africans and restrict the movements of the non-white population. Today it is commemorated as Human Rights Day in South Africa, and recognized as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by Unesco. The event has particular resonance this year as in 2011 people around the world mobilised to claim their universal human rights. Human Rights Day exists to celebrate the progress that’s been made in South Africa, and the sacrifices it entailed. The end of apartheid brought the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which sought to investigate human rights violations under apartheid and ensure a commitment to a future
where those kinds of abuses could not happen again. This was a critical component of South Africa’s transition to a democracy, and has since been held up as a model for similar bodies around the world. South Africa is at the forefront of many human rights issues today. The Ibrahim Index of African Governance placed South Africa third in the continent for participation and human rights, and in March last year South Africa showed global leadership by submitting a UN resolution on sexual orientation and gender identity. The resolution affirmed South Africa’s strong stance on the issue and was passed after a tense and close vote. It was widely seen as a historic moment in the fight for the rights of lesbian, gay and transgender people. Human Rights Day reminds us we cannot afford to be complacent. South Africa must continue to stand up for the ideals of inclusion and tolerance and have the courage to confront human rights issues both at home and internationally. Avi Lasarow has been appointed by the South African High Commission as Honorary Consul for South Africa to the Midlands.

Chanda’s Secrets: Read the book, then watch the movie
Debbie Myburg reviews Chanda’s Secrets, the book award-winning South African film Life Above All is based upon By DEBBIE MYBURG EVER since I watched the awardwinning movie Life, Above All I’ve been keen to read the book it’s based on. I’m glad I did, for Allan Stratton’s novel Chanda’s Secrets is a beautiful story that will be kept on my books-to-never-recycle pile. After reading this story, I was utterly stunned to read that the author is not even South African. He is in fact Canadian and he travelled to SA, Zimbabwe and Botswana in order to gain insight for this particular novel. As he travelled around the sub-Saharan region he was introduced to various inspiring people who work to fight HIV/AIDS. Stratton was compelled to write this book out of his own experiences in these countries and equally for his time spent as a caregiver for friends in the final stages of the disease. It’s certainly evident that Stratton has done his homework. He paints a picture of an ordinary life at a cattle post, a setting we can all clearly picture. He adds to this his dramatic and passionate storytelling to capture what it must be like to live with this disease and its effects on individuals, families and a community. The novel tells of Chanda, a teenager who fights to rescue the people she loves despite some appalling circumstances. Her enduring loyalty, fearlessness
Chanda’s Secrets was turned into the highly praised film, Life, Above All.
and strength are astounding and inspiring. Above all, it’s a novel that talks about living with the truth- an important lesson for SA where AIDS still has an incredibly negative stigma attached to it. Publisher Barry Cunningham writes. “I wanted to publish this book, not because it’s about Aids and what it means to grow up in a community so threatened and changed, but because it is an outstanding and moving novel about the strength of the human spirit.” It’s no wonder that the book has won the American Library Association’s Michael L Printz

Speelgoed, boeke, selfone, afstandbeheerders - niks is gevrywaar teen ‘n tydige (of ontydige) spoegdeurdrenkingsessie nie.

Tutu book honours “strident yet tender” icon A new book on Archbishop Desmond Tutu looks at his influential life
By DEBRA WIDDICOMBE THE remarkable story of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s courage, faith, perseverance and lifelong commitment to the liberation of the oppressed has been explored in Tutu: The Authorised Portrait, a coffee table book published in late 2011. Tutu was born in Klerksdorp in 1931 and trained as a teacher because his family couldn’t afford to send him to medical school, although he apparently would’ve preferred to have studied medicine. He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1960. Tutu then dedicated his life to fighting all forms of oppression, advocating nonviolence, peaceful reconciliation and social justice for all. The book celebrates 80 years of the life of Tutu, an icon whose humanity and compassion have touched millions of lives around the world. It is complemented by an unprecedented collection of images and unpublished artefacts drawn from Tutu’s private files. Cartoons by Zapiro, featuring Tutu, have been included in the middle of the book. Legendary South African journalist Allister Sparks wrote the biography and Tutu’s daughter Reverend Mpho Tutu conducted 40 interviews to gather information about her father’s life. The editor is Doug Adams, founder of Idea Architects, a book and media company that works with visionary authors to create “a wiser, healthier and more just world”. To understand the high esteem with which Tutu is regarded globally, the foreword has been written by Bono (Irish singer and humanitarian best known for being the main vocalist of Dublin-based rock band U2) and the introduction has been written by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. Nelson Mandela once described Tutu as ‘Sometimes strident, often

tender, never afraid and seldom without humour, Desmond’s voice will always be the voice of the voiceless’. You may remember that the term ‘Rainbow Nation’ was coined by Tutu to describe post-apartheid South Africa, after South Africa’s first fully democratic election in 1994. Tutu was the winner of the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize, as well as the chair of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He said ‘My humanity is bound up in yours and we can only be human together’. Tutu’s faith shines through
chapters four, seven and 12, where he argues how you can love God and hate your brother, and that we are all God’s children. What he seeks is a shift in the battleground – forsaking armed conflict for the longer and more ennobling struggle against complacency, against selfishness, against revenge and other, darker aspects of human nature. To follow him in this fight is to have your life turned upside down, turning the world the right side up. If you are searching for the book on Amazon or eBay, the publishers of the book are Macmillan, in association with PQ Blackwell.

Filmmakers invited to enter Africa in Motion Film Festival By NICOLE HOLGATE NOW in it’s seventh year, the Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival is one of the UK’s largest African film festivals, this year with the theme Modern Africa. The aim of the festival is to bring the often marginalised African viewpoint into the globalised mainstream culture, and introduce people to modern manifestations of African culture. Taking place from 25 October to 2 November 2012 at the Filmhouse Cinema in Edinburgh, over the past six years they have screened more than 200 African films to audiences totalling around 15,000 people. The festival also involves an academic symposium of talks and Q & A sessions, and the Short Film Competition. This years’s Short Film Competition has been opened,
with a call for entries which invites African filmmakers to submit documentaries or films up to 31 minutes long. Those selected will then be shown alongside the other films, providing a prestigious chance to gain national recognition. Entries should tackle some of the questions being addressed by the theme of the festival, Modern Africa: • How has Africa become part of the global world through processes such as migration, exile and the increasing role of the African diaspora? • What is Africa’s relationship with the international community in political and economic spheres? • How has the digital revolution affected Africa through the prevalence of technology such as the increasing use of mobile phones, satellite dishes and digital
filmmaking? • How can modern art forms be observed in African cultures such as contemporary dance, architecture, modern street fashion, conceptual art, new fusion musical styles, street art, graffiti, graphic novels and cartoons? • How have African countries found modern, innovative and grassroots solutions to contemporary challenges such as resource control, environmental protection, poverty, conflict resolution, education and economic emancipation? • How has modern life affected African societies and individuals in terms of traditional customs and rituals, religion, rural community life, family dynamics and the role of women? The Call of Africa Did you know if you call Amazon UK today you’ll most likely be greeted with a sunny South African accent? by DAN SWINHOE
T
HERE is a growing trend among UK companies to move their call centres to South Africa. Apart from the traditional cost savings, the advantages are European time zones, fluency in English and easily understood accents. Add good infrastructure and newer, more reliable lines and you have the reasons South Africa has won a significant percentage of the new BPO business over the last three years. Companies such as Amazon, Shell, ASDA, Barclays and Virgin Mobile have all established centers in SA. The BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) sector, where companies outsource operations such as customer service, deliveries and technical help, is an industry worth billions annually employing in excess of 200,000 people worldwide. “South Africa has matured as a BPO destination and is fast becoming one of the most competitive service destinations in the market,” said Patrick Gordon,
head of marketing at BPeSA, a leading BPO company in the Western Cape. “South Africans also have cultural affinity with the UK market.” Currently half of South Africa’s offshore operations demand comes from the UK. The main rivals for this business aredominant India and
“SA has matured as a Business Process Outsourcing destination and is becoming one of the most competitive service destinations” the Philippines. The South African government has put BPO as one of its top three priority sectors. In the Western Cape, the number of call agents has risen by 40% since 2008 and from 20,000 to 28,000 in 2012. It’s a sector that could potentially be worth R 2.4 billion in the next three years. Readers of The South African who have been subject to shoddy
connections and poor line quality in SA might be surprised to hear of these developments in the communications-based industry. “This has been an area of concern in the past, but with the arrival of a number of new cables, the speed and quality of voice and data has improved significantly,” Gordon said. ASDA BPO representative Jo Newbould said their customers were very happy with both the service, call quality and the accent clarity that South Africans provide. Last year ASDA’s offshore workforce increased by 10% to support their music, game & video business. In terms of the demographics in the call centres, the culture in SA differs significantly from the UK. Due to unemployment in the new job market, UK call centres often attract graduates looking to leave as soon as better offers materialise. Not so in South Africa according to Patrick. “Call centre work in South Africa is quickly developing into a respected long-term career,

Africa is filled with opportunities. Speak to the experts on how best to manage them.
Naturalised South African, Gareth Pritchard, took over as CEO of BPeSA Western Cape at the beginning of last year and has been involved with BPO in SA for over a decade. He talked to TheSouthAfrican.com: What was your BPO background before BPeSA? I set up and ran Lufthansa Process Management, a Lufthansa subsidiary, in 1998. We ran a non-voice Business Process Outsourcing operation in Cape Town. This was effectively sold to Teleperformance, the world’s largest call centre outsourcer. One of the biggest complaints from UK consumers is cultural
with 93% of the staff in the Western Cape now permanent. “Generally South Africa has a low attrition rate; driven by an appreciation for having a job, a happy work environment and staff benefits.” Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg are the main cities of choice for foreign investors. This is thanks to quality infrastructure showcased in the 2010 World Cup, a large pool of Englishspeaking graduates and cost savings and incentives offered by the government (SA produces three
gaps (e.g. a person in India not knowing where Putney was). How have you engaged with that issue? We see this as a strength for South Africa and a pivotal argument in our value proposition. There is no offshore location with such a strong cultural affinity as SA. Is there potential for BPO beyond call centre work, i.e. down-the-wire tech sales? Our main focus is call centres because that’s where the most jobs will be generated. However our strong domain skills in legal and financial services will also enable us to generate jobs higher up the value chain. times as many qualified actuaries as India). The Western Cape has more than 125 call centre operations alone, with some (such as Virgin Mobile) having being set up there nearly a decade ago. Nations out east still own the vast majority of the worldwide BPO share, but continue to frustrate many customers from the UK. “South Africa does not see itself as a direct competitor to countries such as India and the Philippines,” said Patrick. “Rather it’s an alternative for companies looking at quality English voice services.”

by STAFF REPORTER THE two main reasons people leave the world of permanent work behind and become a contractor are the freedom that contracting provides, and the potential financial rewards you can achieve compared to traditional employment. When you become a contractor, you also have the added benefit of becoming your own boss. While you have the responsibility of finding new contracts, negotiating your contract rate, and having to deal with recruitment agents, as a contractor you also have much more control over the types of work you do and the location of your work. Contractors receive higher headline rates, as clients do not have the burden of payroll costs, providing employee benefits, or the hassle of employment rules and regulations. Furthermore, more highly skilled and well-established independent contractors are often able to charge premium rates for their services. The future of the contracting industry The Office of National Statistics shows that the demand for contractors is expected to grow in coming years, a clear sign that there will be many opportunities for UK contractors. There are several reasons

CEO of 1st Contact, Sable Wealth | World Croquet Champion by GORDON GLYN-JONES
BULLET BIOGRAPHY • Born: 1967 in Cape Town • School: Bishops, Cape Town • Graduated: UCT with a postgraduate BCom in 1989 • Qualified as a Chartered Accountant: Deloitte in Cape Town in 1992 • Lived in London: since 1992 • Former employers: Prudential, Swiss Bank Corporation, Bankers Trust • Founded 1st Contact: Sept 1996 to current: Founder, owner and CEO • Married to: Adrienne (South African). Two sons, Alex and Oliver • Other Interests: Golf, skiing and holidaying in Arniston • Current World Croquet Champion: Also 2001, 2005, 2009, top 3 since 1999
You came to the UK as a newly qualified chartered accountant, Christmas 1992. There is a common perception that people came here to flee or to cash in. What were your reasons? Well, truth be told, I had a military call-up up to Potgietersrus for two years. I tried to get my father, a Member
of Parliament at the time, to pull some strings for a posting to Simon's Town but he refused. So I thought, right, I'll go to England for a year or so and see what happens. The prospect of being shouted at by a 20-year-old didn’t appeal to me. There was a time when if you were a South African in UK you were highly likely to use 1st Contact. How did the project come about? I suppose I always had my eyes open for an opportunity and I took advantage of the fact that I was South African and understood the Commonwealth experience. I was a chartered accountant and had bought a Limited Company from a small Kiwi company and thought, hang on a minute, I can do what they do. How did 1st Contact expand so quickly? 1st Contact operated in a market where you could rely on word of mouth as long as you offered a great service. South Africans,
Aussies and Kiwis huddled around a braai on a Saturday afternoon would help each other out, which was effectively a secondary marketing team for us. You employ 200 staff in three continents, but with 1st Contact you never get a disinterested person on the phone. How do you infuse an entire staff with that kind of passion and enthusiasm? That’s the golden question. We place huge importance on who we take on in. In the very first interview, we make sure those who join us will fit in, enjoy it and share the same company values: 'Solve, enjoy, care and grow'. We can always train them in the knowledge they need, but if they possess those characteristics they will treat that phone call not as an interruption but as a reason for their job. What was the biggest crisis you’ve faced in your business life? Without doubt the crisis came when they changed the tax laws here in the UK. This affected about 10, 000 of our clients. In a mid-March pre-budget speech, the chancellor at the time said a product we had must be stopped by 5 April. We simply had to stop delivering. How did you get through it? Fortunately we had staff, infrastructure and clients. We had various other services, so business was still coming in. The brand was strong enough to withstand the onslaught but we did have 10 days where we intensively looked into what other services we could offer these clients. We came up with solutions in about a month and took it from there. You went to the North Pole and soon are going to the South Pole. Is it a need in a certain type of personality's life to push through such a tough challenge? Does one need to do that in life? My wife is completely bemused about why I went to the North Pole and why I want to go to the
Professor Gerald Pillay Vice-chancellor of Liverpool Hope University
South Pole. Why would I go to this freezing cold environment, when it sounds utterly miserable? She’s right, but it’s a challenge and something different. The gain I see in this is derived from the pain I know I’ll get through. You're not sure what it will be like but you know it will be fascinating and that there will be a story to tell. You started playing croquet at the age of seven. That’s an unusual choice for a seven-yearold? It’s very, very odd – I did endure my share of teasing at school. I suppose I carried on because I started so young. I was intrigued by it and I got hooked. At first it
Tessa Uys Classical Pianist
was are there better players in the club who I can beat, then in the country and eventually, who are the better players in the world who I can compete against? I’m very competitive and it was a volatile mix. What’s so fascinating about croquet? It's an intellectual game that you play outdoors. Also some Springboks give up rugby when they are 32, I can actually play this until I'm 80. I have been able to travel around the world and meet incredible people. Actually I think I'm quite lucky, I've found my game. www.thesouthafrican.com/business

Self-employed transformation specialist by PAUL HARRISON • Born: Durban, South Africa • How long in the UK: On and off since 1990 • Background: I first became interested in human potential and personal development in 1986 when I was conscripted to the South African Defence Force. I returned from Angola and quickly realised support for South African soldiers suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder was nonexistent. In 1989 I left home to further my education abroad. I arrived in London in awe of this pulsating city. My first job was a labourer on a building site and through the ’90s I had several interesting jobs, which all served to fund my studies. Now I coach and empower people and organisations • Motto: I am a force for good!
What do you do? I help my clients create extraordinary results personally and professionally through coaching, workshops and bespoke training programmes. I provide tools that help my clients achieve the results they want. I also do a lot of professional speaking. Most exciting thing about your job? I get to help people change their lives. It’s rewarding and humbling. Little comes close to watching people transform in front of your eyes. It gives me purpose and energises me. Most challenging thing about your job? To stay on top of my game and keep providing value, I have to keep growing and expanding my knowledge. In an industry that requires virtually instant results, there are always new people

popping up to offer more value if you cannot. Tell us an interesting story related to your job? I arrived back in SA in November 2001, after 12 years away, with a deep sense of purpose, ready to make a difference with the skills I had acquired. I’ve always been a sports enthusiast and as a passionate Sharks fan I was disappointed when they fared so badly that year. I was convinced I could help them gel better as a team and improve their results the following year. I was a member of the gym where they trained and would often see Kevin Putt there, the Sharks coach at the time. One day I introduced myself and told him what I believed I could do for the team. I knew he might be sceptical as he’d probably had similar offers in the past. I was right. When I told him I would do it for no charge, he smiled and said, “Nobody does anything for free, what’s the catch?” I said I merely wanted half an hour of his time to explain how I could help. If there were favourable results, we could then discuss a mutually beneficial relationship. I got my meeting, the team responded well and I worked with them throughout that season, which saw them go to the Currie Cup final only to lose narrowly to the Bulls at Loftus. I made some great friends and learnt a lot about myself too. Future plans? I want to work with ex-military personnel who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, helping them to deal with the trauma of war. I know how war can tear families apart and prevent individuals living a normal healthy life, and I have a couple of projects coming
to fruition in this area. I’m also working on a book. Do I think being South African helps you in your work? Yes, especially when I travel to the USA. I love being South African and I am proudly so. I get asked a lot about SA on my travels. People who have never visited are genuinely interested in it, so yes, it does help me.

Speed thrills! LET’S face it, we live in a world of instant gratification. So much of what we want we can get access to so quickly. The internet has been a huge contributor to this. Information particularly is at our fingertips in less than a few seconds. We can post a status on social media and get an instant response to it. We have come to expect quick responses – especially when so many things can now can be automated. The experience can change significantly when we bring in a human element though. Nowhere is this more relevant in the business world than when it comes to customer service. Customer service can have a huge impact on your clients. They judge the company based on the experience they have with customer service. If responses are slow and inaccurate, the client will not be happy. But if a client receives a swift, accurate response from the customer services department, even for a complaint, this can have a hugely positive impact on how the client sees the company and whether they will continue to do business with them in the future. Taking the train to the wonderful wines of Oz Experience another side of Australia by going on a trip through the Hunter Valley vineyards, two hours from Sydney
by ROB CROSSAN THE sound of my carriage rushing over tracks that run endlessly into the perfectly still Australian night seemed like the greatest sleep aid of all time. And for somebody who rarely gets a good night’s kip at the best of times I never thought shut-eye contentment would come aboard a bunk bed. But Country Link, the national Australian rail carrier, has long been providing the most comfy, if not the quickest, route between the main cities of Melbourne and Sydney. If pennies are tight your best bet is to secure yourself a reclining seat in one of the trains that pulls out of Melbourne station each evening at 8pm. But for some romance and privacy the first class cabins are a treat. There’s a hot shower right next to the cabin that I only had to share with one other cabin and my friendly guard Dave seemed less interested in checking my ticket and far more eager to discuss his own British roots. “Do the trains in England have showers like this?” he asks me. I daren’t reply the truth that on most British trains you’re lucky to get so much as a dirty sink between 60 people in one carriage. After making my bed for me, Dave took my order for dinner. Just like on a plane, meals are served to you at your seat and my pasta carbonara was a huge leap upwards in quality from the pre-heated fare we get back in Blighty. In first class you also get breakfast and a snack box filled with crisps, sandwiches and chocolate in case you get hungry during the night.. Arriving in central Sydney at the height of morning rush hour is an assault on the senses after 12 hours of being wrapped in my own little cabin, but luckily my meeting point was barely outside the station - to take a minibus trip into the Hunter Valley, one of Australia’s prime wine growing regions with Boutique Tours. Barely two hours from Sydney, the Valley is part of an entirely different Australia with verdant hills, lush fields and an incredible 140 vineyards within a 20-minute drive. Before the imbibing began in earnest with
Tips for your trip: • Fly from London Gatwick to Melbourne via Kuala Lumpar with Air Asia www.airasia.com • Travel with Country Link sleeper trains between Melbourne and Sydney www.countrylink.info • Take a gourmet wine tour with ‘Boutique Tours’ boutiquetoursaustralia. com.au • Visit the Hunter Valley www.visitnsw.com

our guide Steve, who has been running these tours for nearly 30 years, we lunched at The Cellar, a glamorous venue with a huge stone fireplace and a veritable forest of plants. The set lunch menu includes a zesty glass of locally produced Verdelho white wine accompanied by a sumptuous dish of John Dory with ratatouille and potatoes. The afternoon was spent negotiating Steve’s favourite vineyards. We sampled vino galore at the Pepper Tree, Wandin Valley, and got a chance to get up close with some impressively macho strength cheese at the ‘Hunter Valley Cheese Company’. Unsurprisingly, late afternoon brought on a strong urge for a nap, and the Bluebush Estate allowed me to check in slightly early to get acquainted with their huge rooms looking out onto the owner’s small vineyard, tennis court and covered pool. A spectacular thunderstorm broke out over the valley that night. But as the thunder subsided and grumbled into the distance the sound, coaxing me into a deep sleep, reminded me of the clatter of the sleeper train wheels racing once again back to Melbourne on its sedate journey through one of this country’s most beautiful regions.

Support for Team Zimbabwe: London Olympics The Zimbabwe Diaspora Olympics 2012 Support Network is calling on people to help their visiting athletes
by HEATHER WALKER YOU may be wondering how to support your national team at the London Olympics. Well, there are many opportunities for Zimbabweans in the UK to contribute to the success of Team Zimbabwe. This is according to Busi Chindove, Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) Chef de Mission to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, at her recent address to Zimbabweans in London. This event was hosted by the new Zimbabwe Diaspora Olympics 2012 Support Network in partnership with the Zimbabwe Business Network. Chindove, like the other board members of the ZOC, is
a volunteer of the International Olympic Committee-funded body. She said there will be an Africa Village based in Hyde Park for the duration of the Games. All Olympic Committees from Africa will be represented there and it will showcase of Africa's people and products. “It will be a place for networking between Zimbabweans and athletes, and a platform to celebrate our successes. We would love Zimbabweans in the UK to come along and meet our athletes there.” Chindove said they were looking for genuine Zimbabwean goods to sell at the village. Other entrepreneurial opportunities include branded merchandise and sponsorship of the official team kit.
There will be a pre-Games training camp in the UK and athletes will need accommodation, transport etc. “We're looking for partnerships and we want to hear your ideas on how to get involved in supporting our team,” Chindove said. Offers of support from those present at the meeting included spiritual guidance for the team members, marketing the athletes to the global community, and helping the athletes to inspire UK diaspora youth. Chindove said Zimbabweans who have already qualified include three marathon runners and two rowers. “Athletes have until May to qualify and we're fairly confident that many more of ours will do so.” She said Zimbabwe's

Mugabe is “spirit medium”
by JONATHAN WALDHEIM RESPECTED author, lecturer in English literature and expert in Zimbabwean heritage Vimbai Gukwe Chivaura has caused a stir in Zimbabwe by announcing that Robert Mugabe will “never die” and that his spirit will live on. Speaking to traditional chiefs at a conference on Friday in Bulawayo, Chivaura insisted that Mugabe was not only their leader in person but also in spirit, declaring, “We will continue fighting the British and other imperialists using his spirit”. This public show of loyalty to Mugabe as a symbol of defiance follows the donation last Friday by Kenyan spiritual leaders of a gown owned by the late General Gaddafi.

medal chances for swimming and long jump were particularly good. As each country has been allocated Olympic tickets there are still a few left for Zimbabweans for tennis, athletics and the closing ceremony. These are available from official ticketing

TEAM SA @ THE LONDON OLYMPICS by RONEL VAN ZYL SOUTH African pentathlete Karina Gerber’s sights are firmly set on the London Olympics 2012. She’s dually based in South Africa and London, the last seven years mostly in South West London. Karina is originally from Pretoria, where she studied Adventure Tourism at the Tshwane University of Technology. I met her while she was training in the UK, and later chatted to her on Skype in between her hectic training schedule. When did you first take part in Pentathlon and what is it about? My first introduction to Modern Pentathlon was in 1996. I fell in love with the sport the moment I became aware of it. I came from a swimming and running
background and in 1997 I started fencing, shooting and horse riding. It was a huge undertaking. In 1998 I competed in my first international competition for South Africa and qualified for the World Championships in that same year. The primary wish of Pentathlon’s creator Pierre de Coubertin was for it to be educational. It is a comprehensive sport, testing the physical and mental capabilities of the athlete. On the physical side, swimming and running are the basic disciplines. On the mental side, shooting requires stress control and a precise technique. On the intellectual side, fencing requires adaptability and intelligence; riding an unknown horse requires a mix of adaptability, self-control
and courage. What was the highlight of your achievements to date? After only three years in the sport I was the first South African woman to compete at Olympic level in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. I came 18th out of 24 athletes. What happened between 2000 and now? I suffered a number of setbacks in the intervening years, including a cycling accident in London while training for the 2008 Olympics. But I ended the past international season with a third place at the African championships in Egypt in July 2011. I was also nominated as one of three ladies
Karina Gerber South African pentathlete
for the Boland Senior Sportswoman of the Year at the end of 2011. You showed true mettle by bouncing back and resurrecting your dream to compete in the Olympics. “Amateurs practice to get it right; champions train until they cannot do it wrong, ”by JP O’Connor is one of my favourite quotes! When is your next competition? My next competition will be the women’s international ranking competition in Bern, Switzerland on 24 and 25 March. After that it is
World Cup 3 in Szazhalombata, Hungary, from 12-15 April followed by World Cup 4 in Rostov, Russia from 19-22 April. The last possible place for me to qualify will be at the World Championships in Rome, Italy from 7 to 13 May. All the different pieces of equipment for pentathlon must be expensive. How do you fund your sport? The training, travelling and competition expenses until qualification are for my own pocket, making the challenge even bigger. For these four competitions I need to raise around £5,000, which will cover only the basics. I’m in need of sponsors and am very appreciative of
everyone’s support and encouragement on this often lonely road. What are your future plans? After the 2012 Modern Pentathlon season I want to start ploughing back into the sport. I intend to start concentrating on coaching future South African world champions and possible Olympic medallists.
Who’s your favourite SA Olympic team mascot? by KWAME WILSON ADVERTISING agencies across South Africa were asked to come up with a South African mascot for the Olympic and Paralympic teams at the London 2012 Games, one that truly symbolises everything great about SA. The competition has been whittled down to six finalists that have been showcased in magazines such as You, Drum and Huisgenoot. Although South Africans based in the UK cannot participate as the competition is SMS-based, we’d like to know your thoughts on all the mascots, and which one you think represents South Africa in the best way. The life-sized mascot with the most number of votes is expected to be unveiled to the general public in Johannesburg on 4 April, at the same event where the national kit for the Olympics and Paralympics
will be launched. Below are the six finalists. Which one do you think is best equipped to spur our country on to sporting glory ahead of the
summer games in London? Let the debate begin! Leave a comment on our website to tell us what you think . www.thesouthafrican.com/sport
The mascots (from left to right): Chikuru the Rhino; SizeYA’s hair represents the South African flag; Ebee, the friendly bee; Zanzi is an African wild dog; Katsi is a serval; and Ubhejani is a rhino who symbolises strength and unity as a nation.

PROTEAS DERAIL BLACK CAPS South Africa’s Philander takes 10 wickets to beat New Zealand

by STAFF REPORTER outh Africa wrapped up the second Test against New Zealand by nine wickets inside three days in Hamilton on Saturday, thanks to Vernon Philander, who produced the best figures of his early career. The tourists needed just 20 overs to reach the 101-run target after New Zealand’s second innings crumbled Philander took six for 44, to add to his four first-innings wickets, dismissing the hosts for
168 in their second innings. The Proteas achieved their victory target with minimum fuss thanks to a half-century from skipper Graeme Smith. It put South Africa, who wrapped up victory before tea on day three, 1-0 up in the three-match series after the first Test was drawn. Smith was not out on 55 with Hashim Amla on 46. But the big win was set up by 26-year-old star paceman Philander. Playing in only his sixth Test, he produced the

best bowling of his brief career of 6/44 to give him match figures of 10/114 and the man-of-the-match award. He now boasts Test career statistics of five five-wicket hauls and a total of 45 wickets at an average 13.6 runs apiece, closing the gap with team-mate Dale Steyn who is the world’s top ranked bowler. “If he keeps going the way he is then he’ll get there pretty soon,” Smith said.
