BBC SHOWS ‘UNSEEN’ DEWANI FOOTAGE National Prosecuting Authority calls new documentary “trial by media”

by DAN SWINHOE THE BBC is to show previously unseen video footage of the hours leading up to the murder of honeymooner Anni Dewani in Cape Town in 2010. The hour-long Panorama show, “The Honeymoon Murder”, will be aired on 29 March and promises “exclusive access to CCTV footage never before seen publicly.” In its blurb the BBC show asks, “Did the wealthy businessman engage a taxi driver to arrange his wife’s death, or is he wrongly accused?” and promises to show a “different side to the couple than has so far been portrayed.” However, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has expressed concern over the documentary. The NPA’s Mthunzi Mhaga told News24, ”We are obviously concerned because the matter is pending before court and therefore sub judice. “The documentary will amount to trial by media.” Mhaga said the NPA doesn’t know what footage the BBC programme has or even how they got it. Shrien Dewani faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstructing the administration of justice. In November 2010 his wife,

In an interview with Fox Gugu stated that she loves the role because the character has a strong moral compass and ‘a real heart’ to her. The next episode airs tonight, Tuesday 27 March, at 8pm.

Anni Dewani, 28, was fatally shot after the taxi she and her husband hired was allegedly hijacked in Gugulethu. Shrien said he was kicked out of the car when the hijackers drove off with his wife. Her body was later found in the hijacked car in Khayelitsha. The taxi driver ZolaTongo later

admitted guilt on a charge of murder, but told the police that Shrien had offered him R15,000 to stage the hijacking and have Anni killed. An extradition order was signed against Dewani by British Home Secretary Theresa May in September last year. He has since appealed to the British High Court,

and SA’s prosecuting authorities are waiting for a definitive outcome before they can add his name to the charge sheet. ‘Panorama: The Honeymoon Murder’ will be shown on Thursday 29 March, BBC One, at 9pm, with reporting from Jeremy Vine. www.thesouthafrican.com/news

SA school principal jailed in UK for drug smuggling Imprisonment in London of Durban principal turned drug mule leaves colleagues and her family reeling in shock

by KRIS GRIFFITHS A DURBAN headmistress has been sentenced to almost five years imprisonment in a British court after confessing to smuggling class A drugs into the country. Annabella Momplé, 46, the former headmistress of Carrington Heights Primary School in Durban, was arrested at Heathrow Airport in December 2011 by UK Border Agency officials after being intercepted by sniffer dogs. 2.5kg of cocaine with a street value of £355,000 was found hidden in her rucksack. Momplé displayed no emotion as the verdict was read out at Isleworth Crown Court, which sits directly beneath the flight path of the airport at which she was caught. Her arrest and imprisonment left school colleagues and her family reeling in shock. The headmistress, who has an unblemished career in teaching underprivileged children, had reportedly told colleagues she was attending her uncle’s funeral in Northern Ireland – the country of her birth – where she lived until the age of 10 before moving to South Africa. Meanwhile she told her family she was travelling to the UK for a conference arranged by

the education department. It transpired in court that she had actually become embroiled in a drug courier operation after her second husband, a gambling addict, had racked up huge debt that had plunged them both into deep financial trouble. Her incarceration for the offence was of particular concern to her family, of whom the spokesperson has been her brother, journalist Paddy Harper. He said, “My sister is a respected, committed educator who has made a significant contribution to the lives of hundreds of children. “She has an impeccable reputation as a principal. Even the Education Department holds her in high regard.” He added that her teenage son from her first marriage was shattered and that the rest of the family were taking it badly, particularly their father, who recently survived a battle against cancer. They were unaware of the financial difficulties she had been experiencing. Defence counsel Dominic Chandler explained to the court how Momplé, who suffers from high blood pressure, arthritis and depression, was asked twice to undertake an international courier

operation to help clear the debt but refused. The court heard that it was only after Momplé’s doctor changed her prescription for her depression medication that Momplé changed her mind, citing this as a possible cause for her U-turn, also that she was told her house was about to be repossessed and that her husband would be seriously injured or killed if she didn’t agree to do it. The headmistress-turneddrug-mule claimed she did not know it was drugs that was to be transported, only that she suspected it, and had no idea of the scale of the operation. It had reportedly become clear to her criminal associates that she was a particularly useful courier as she had a British passport, meaning she would arouse less suspicion at airport terminals. She was placed on a flight first to Sao Paolo, Brazil, where she picked up the package – white towels that had been impregnated with large amounts of cocaine to be later processed with a solvent – before travelling to Dublin via London to meet her contact. After her arrest she was remanded in custody at the nearby top-security Bronzefield Prison, the only purpose-built private

prison for women in the UK and the largest in Europe. The family’s shock over Momplé’s imprisonment was echoed by colleagues, many of whom have written letters of commendation to the judge. Momplé was a scholarship student at Durban Girls’ College before commencing her career, eventually becoming the headmistress of Carrington Heights. She is credited with transforming the lives of some of its poorest pupils, in particular an isolated child whose fees she paid for a year after teaching him English.

The court heard how Momplé, while in remand at Bronzefield Prison, had even begun to teach and assist fellow inmates who themselves were victims of drugrelated problems, after she realised the true extent of her crime and those it affects. The judge, in summing up, took the mitigating reports of her good character and conduct into consideration before deciding on her sentence. He said, “You are an intelligent woman, and despite your claimed naivety you knew exactly what you were doing.”

Dream of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital nears reality by SUSAN MILLER AS she sees the dream of a Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) becoming reality – after seven long years of research and feasibility studies, Nelson Mandela Children’s Trust CEO Sibongile Mkhabela admits her “tummy is in knots”. In London recently to raise the profile of the NMCH, and build a possible partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital among others, Mkhabela says the project needs to “break ground (literally) this year.” It also still needs a large amount of funding as so far they have raised about R200 million on the R1billion project. With the South African government on board at last to cover the project’s operational costs from 2014, however, the dream can become real. This project is close to both Mkhabela and Mandela’s hearts and has become, she feels, something he sees as his lasting legacy for children. After all it has evolved from his words “A specialised, dedicated children’s hospital will be a credible demonstration of the commitment of African leaders to place the rights of children at the forefront. Nothing less would be enough.” Based on the principle that no child will be turned away due

to inability to pay, this means continuous fundraising, she concedes ruefully. However the cause is of personal interest to Mkhabela, who lost her son Lindokuhle when he was only five, and experienced the sorrows and frustrations of seeing her child being cared for in an adult ward. Then the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (a position she will return to on the completion of the NMCH) she received support not only from Mandela but many of the Fund’s trustees. “I sat in the small ICU isolation cubicle for 30 days. Lindo had suffered third-degree burns on 80% of his body. He was very sick. When I asked the nurses to talk to my son, they would say ‘but he’s unconscious’ and I would say ‘but you should still talk to him – he’s sedated’… you could see them thinking ‘oh God, she’s one of those’… “If I left the room I would have music playing or my voice talking on a cassette (that shows how long ago it was…) telling stories so he could wake up to a familiar voice. “I would ask nurses to replay the tape and they wouldn’t do it… I realised that nursing a child needs a particular character and specific training. I also watched the frustrations of the paediatric surgeons as they worried about

C A T ’ S

their patient’s specific needs and complained about the absence of paediatric nursing care. “By the time I finally closed Lindo’s eyes, I knew how badly we were failing our children”, she says. However it took Madiba’s determination to get the project off the ground after he had stayed with the family throughout their journey with Lindo. “Part of me said let’s not go too big , we could renovate a ward at Bara (Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital) and walk away – we would have delivered something. But the old man was pushing for something that would be his own legacy for children,“ she says. The years of intensive research illustrated a few shocking facts: in South Africa, 20 million children rely on only one paediatric hospital and for those children and families who live far away from the hospital, the distance can be insurmountable. That hospital is the Red Cross Children’s hospital in Cape Town, among only four specialist children’s hospitals across Africa (as opposed to 19 in Australia and 23 in Canada),with two others in Cairo and the last in Nairobi. The NMCH will be open to all children from southern Africa, with 80% of its patients public and

20% private, with 10% of those from the SADC countries and paid for by their governments on the basis of bilateral agreements. The remaining 10% will be children on medical aid schemes. Mkhabela says the hospital will be registered as a not-forprofit entity and will consist of a “very interesting” partnership between the Trust and government. However it’s envisaged that the management will be primarily private although it will be run “without a profit motive but an efficiency motive.” After the site was chosen in

by STAFF REPORTER ISANGO Ensemble from Cape Town kicks off the Globe to Globe festival, which presents all Shakespeare’s 37 plays in 37 different languages, with a carnival interpretation of the great narrative poem ‘Venus and Adonis’. ‘Venus and Adonis’ will be performed at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, in IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, SeSotho, Setswana, Afrikaans and South African English. Isango have already enchanted audiences in the West End with their reimagining of The Mysteries – Yiimimangaliso and The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo. They will bring the same modern African sensibility, brimming over with song and dance, to Shakespeare’s great story of seduction and loss of innocence. TODAY someone close to me had their mobile phone stolen - an experience I have had the displeasure of sharing. That first stunning moment. Not really believing, eyes flying around to see if anyone is playing a prank, trying to fool you. Panic follows soon after, wild darting and clawing at details, trying to remember what you did just moments before, was someone with you, did you just think you had misplaced it – and so it goes on. A dance of disbelief. And then the slow realisation that the loss has truly happened. To you. It happened to you. Praying it will all be better, that some good soul will have a change of heart and bring your baby back. There have been times the latter did happen, and times when you felt your whole life had gone. Tied up in that small package is your history, your loves and friends, such a violation of your trust, your privacy. Today someone close to me lost her daughter in a car accident. There is no greater loss. The

disbelief, horror and physical pain have her in their grip. It will last forever. Unimaginable loss. This is not the first time I have had to watch a friend say goodbye to a child. From baby to toddler to teen full of dreams and playful spirit, ready to take her place in the future and be the person she was meant to be. To be claimed by death. I watch my own children more closely now, hug them a little tighter and pray a little harder. We can only try to comfort, be there and say the inane words that will never suffice. Tomorrow my one friend will get another mobile phone while the other will face the full reality of her loss. So why do we put so much trust and faith in the gadgets and material things we collect in our lives? We gather stock, crash cars, lose things and are heartbroken. But we mend and begin to realise that we should rather be gathering friends, trust and life experiences that can never be replaced. When I left South Africa I gave everything away. Lost my house, said goodbye to my friends and family. Thought I would barely get through it, but I did. My children were close. It has taken a long time to realise that all those things will pass. Why is it that a tragedy is what I need to remind me just how blessed I am? Nowadays we can track our gadgets, but we can never find a loved one taken so soon. Go out and love life.

Nelson Mandela to be played by a Brit

Based on a screenplay by Bill Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Miserables), Long Walk to Freedom will be directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) and produced by Anant Singh, together with his Sarafina! co-producer David Thompson by STAFF REPORTER A feature film based on Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk To Freedom will start filming on 26 May 2012. The epic motion picture will span Mandela’s extraordinary life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. “It is a thrilling and ultimately joyous story of a good man triumphing against all odds,” said Sophie Glover, publicist for Pathé, which has acquired the distribution rights in the UK and France. The movie’s journey from idea to realisation is a Long Walk to Freedom in itself. The rights were acquired 15 years ago by prolific South African producer Anant Singh, when – in the face of fierce competition from US studios – Mandela entrusted him with his life story. The film has finally come together with the full support of Madiba, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. Based on a screenplay by Bill Nicholson (Sarafina!, Gladiator, Les Miserables), the film will be directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, The First Grader) and produced by Singh, together with his Sarafina! coproducer David Thompson. Cameron McCracken, Managing Director of Pathé UK, said,“I have been aware of Anant’s obsession with this project for the past 15 years – it reminded me of Richard Attenborough’s 20-year struggle to get Gandhi made. tee sou waag drink, sou my pa voel jy’s of siek, of rebels omdat jy nie meer wil koffie drink soos die res nie. En op Makkiesplaas was dit meestal moerkoffie. Die Engelse kultuur het my laat anders dink oor tee. Hierdie is ’n tee-nasie. Hulle verkies enige dag ’n lekker soet koppie tee bo ’n beker boeretroos. Ek vra vandag so bietjie rond uit blote nuuskierigheid: Wat’s die standaard? Hoeveel koppies op ’n dag is normaal? Niks minder as agt nie, kry ek die besliste antwoord uit alle oorde. Na agt koppies tee sal ek mislik voel, probeer ek in my beste Engels verduidelik. Ek moet bieg – die teleurstelling was groot toe ek vir my eerste “coffee date” saam met ‘n Engelse vriendin gaan, en sy bestel tee. Daar’s immers niks wat so lekker kuier soos ’n vet koppie cappuccino waar rondom jy jou hande kan skulp om dit warm te hou nie. Niks. Mens kuier net anders met tee in ’n koffieplekkie. Myns insiens. Die verskeidenheid van tee op die winkelrakke verklap dat tee regtig hier saakmaak. In my

fairly early in the process but we have developed a number of contacts we would expect to do business with going forward and a clear interest in building more of the same.

Is Cape Town a viable option for UK companies looking to outsource their IT and creative work? by JONATHAN WALDHEIM

W

ITH the booming global market for web solutions and design, Cape Town is marketing itself as the African Silicon Valley. The term ‘Silicon Cape’ comes from an initiative founded in October 2009 by two South African entrepreneurs, Vinny Lingham and Justin Stanford. The project, currently with more than 5,000 members, aims to bring together companies and individuals working in the digital media and creative sectors in Cape Town, putting them under a memorable umbrella term and offering a consistently attractive value proposition in a city with a highly sophisticated infrastructure. The Silicon Cape brand is striving to create an organic community where local and foreign investors are attracted to companies in Cape Town, with the UK market being a prime target for South African businesses due to the negligible time difference and language barrier, and favourable exchange rate. Conceptually, Silicon Cape is a voluntary venture run by an astute committee of high tech entrepreneurs who live and work under its name, with the aim of the project to make Cape Town a

creative focal point in Africa. The question is, what advantages are there for UK companies looking to outsource IT and web solutions work? Mark Nagurski, Digital champion of the similar ‘Digital Derry’ initiative in Northern Ireland recently visited Cape Town as part of a trade mission alongside Tom Holmes and his Creativebrief company. He explained that although there is a huge distance between the two countries, “The cost base compares well with other cities, the quality of the work being produced is excellent and we share a lot of common factors including language, time zones and extensive links with the British market” Selecting a company to outsource IT and creative work involves several key factors. The financial aspect is obviously important but other advantages are equally desired. Companies in the Silicon Cape not only offer a high quality product at a very competitive price but they also open up further links to the Southern African and PanAfrican market place. A good example of this is Bluegrass Digital’s recent rollout for Dettol in Nigeria, in collaboration with Playhouse communications, a Nigerian-

based agency. UK companies can look at using the expertise of Silicon Cape companies to tap into the growing African market, with a potential audience of around 185 million people. Essentially, South Africa becomes the gateway to SubSaharan Africa, an area with a predicted GDP increase of 5-6% in the next year. Speaking to Nick Durrant of Bluegrass Digital regarding the financial advantages of using a Cape Town company, it is apparent that using an SA company to outsource work can save clients up to 50% compared to UK prices, with a possibility of a larger discount should the European economic situation improve and the respective currencies strengthen. There are of course challenges involved in using South African based tech companies. Despite being in the same time zone as Europe, being 6,000 miles away requires detailed workflows, reporting, communication and high levels of client service. Bluegrass Digital has a London office to ensure seamless communication, sometimes a challenge for smaller tech companies without the infrastructure. With the advent of high speed Internet,

Mark Nagurski Digital Champion for the ‘Digital Derry’ project in Northern Ireland, Mark recently visited Cape Town on a trade mission to establish contacts with the Silicon Cape initiative. What impact has your trip had in the way you are trading with South Africa? We had never really considered South Africa as an obvious trading opportunity before our visit. The Silicon Cape initiative really helped bring the region to our attention and encouraged us to reach out and start building some connections. It is still

videoconferencing and a growing number of tech tools for sharing and collaboration, long distance business can be conducted more readily. It is however, important that companies continue to train their staff to proactively avoid specifics lost in digital translation. Since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa the global recognition of Cape Town as a digital centre has improved and combined with companies looking for the best value for money in the current economic downturn, the Silicon Cape has the capacity to grow into Africa’s equivalent of the Silicon Valley. It seems that although, in the

Is the availability of web solutions and tech companies in Cape Town a viable option for companies in Derry/ Londonderry to outsource work? There is always going to be something of a mental hurdle to get over as Cape Town isn’t exactly on our doorstep. That said, the cost base compares well with other cities, the quality of the work being produced is excellent and we share a lot of common factors including language, time zones and extensive links with the British market. What impressed you about the SA digital community? Of the companies we met, there was an undoubted openness, willingness to share ideas and desire to build contacts in new markets.

words of Mark Nagurski, “Every city and region worth its salt is jockeying to become the next big tech centre” Cape Town looks to have nailed the necessary services for companies in the UK and elsewhere to outsource the work they need doing at a reasonable price at the highest standard. A smart & simple way to save on international money transfers

Choosing a foreign exchange provider by STAFF REPORTER FIRSTLY, it is imperative that you explore the idea of using a specialist foreign exchange provider like UKForex. The bottom line is plain and simple - you will save large amounts of money by using a specialist provider over a bank. The next, and most fascinating part, is actually selecting the best provider for you. There are loads of players within this industry – all claiming to offer similar benefits! Do your research and look out for the following: 1. Regulation - are they authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA)? This ensures that all client funds are held in segregated accounts and are safeguarded should that company cease trading at any time. Beware of the difference. Being ‘FSA registered’ places very few requirements on a firm – for instance they are not required to operate segregated client accounts, which means if they go bust, you

Rand dips to weakest week of 2012 by STAFF REPORTER THE South African Rand traded between 7.55 and 7.71 to the US Dollar during the period between the 19 March and the 26 March 2012. The Rand also traded between 11.97 and 12.23 to the British Pound during the same period. During the middle of last week the Rand dipped against the US Dollar on disappointing news coming out of the Euro-Zone as well as weak commodity prices, as concerns about the global economy came to the fore once

again. This depreciation was somewhat halted towards the end of the week though, with lower than expected inflation data. “Inflation surprised on the downside, but it’s just one number, we will wait and see if the trend continues in the next CPI and PPI numbers,” said Ion de Vleeschauwer, a trader at Bidvest Bank. “If it continues it will be good for the bonds, which means interest rates could stay lower for longer.” At the end of the week, the Rand, which tracked the Euro, firmed up

slightly against the US Dollar. It started the day on R7.70, to finish off on R7.68 to the USD. Although the Rand had firmed towards the end of the week, it was on course to post its largest weekly loss since December last year. The Rand will finish off this week having lost 2% of its gains from the previous week. GBP / ZAR: 12.19 EUR / ZAR: 10.21 USD / ZAR: 7.71 Composed by Matthew Cridge

: The new Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) scheme will be open to graduates who have been identified by UK universities as persons who have developed world class innovative ideas or entrepreneurial skills, and who are not yet able to fulfil the requirements of the Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) route.

There will be a limit of 1,000 places on this scheme for the first year, which will be divided between UK universities. The UK Home Office said it will announce in due course a process and deadline by which the universities that wish to participate in the scheme should register. Leave will be granted for 12 months, which can then be extended for a further 12 months, provided the sponsoring university is satisfied with the progress made. Successful applicants will be expected to spend the majority of their time developing their

business, but may work for up to 20 hours per week to support themselves. Dependants may join the applicant in the UK, provided the Tier 1 maintenance requirements are met. Time spent on this category does not count toward settlement and at the end of the two years in this category, the migrant must switch into Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) or leave the UK. A lower fund requirement will apply for migrants switching from this scheme to the full Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) BIC will update clients as more information becomes available.

The cost to business of youth unemployment In 2011 UK youth unemployment was at a record high, with one in five youth not in employment, education or training

by PAUL HARRISON BREDA Layne of Cogito Development Projects delves deeper into a challenging problem that’s gaining huge attention in the UK and South Africa. “In 2011 UK youth unemployment was at a record high, with one in five young people not in employment, education or training. The government has now removed work-related learning from the curriculum and ceased funding careers guidance services. It seems if you talk to people in business it is unanimously agreed that, in general, young people are not leaving education with the right skills for work,” explained Layne. A few facts and comments in the public domain support that conclusion: • The unemployment rate for 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK from September to November 2011 was 22.3%. Described as “a record high” the number of unemployed 16- to 24-year-olds has now reached 1 million. This is an increase of 52,000 people from the three months to August 2011. • In its 2011 report the CBI stated that employers identified that 29% of recruits who left school at 16 were poorly or very poorly prepared for work. • The British Chamber of Commerce reveals small businesses are frustrated at the

quality of applicants, who they say can barely concentrate or add up. Nearly half of the 2,000 firms surveyed said they would be ‘fairly or very nervous’ about hiring someone who has just finished their A-levels. “This begs a question, How do businesses identify the skills and attributes young people need to prepare for work and how can schools better prepare pupils for job hunting, or even setting up their own businesses?” said Layne. And if you look at South Africa, you have an even more acute problem. South Africa has a complex problem of youth unemployment. According to an SA Treasury Report in 2011: • About 42% of young people under the age of 30 are unemployed compared with less than 17% of adults over 30. • Only one in eight workingage adults under 25 have a job compared with 40% in most emerging economies. • Employment of 18- to 24-yearolds has fallen by more than 20% (320 000) since December 2008. • Unemployed young people tend to be less skilled and inexperienced – almost 86% do not have formal further or tertiary education, while two thirds have never worked. Does South Africa need even more creative solutions? According to Layne, projects like

Aware Net in Grahamstown use and support modern, innovative information and communication technologies to help young people become better skilled and financially independent. Afroes is a social enterprise operating in both South Africa and Kenya, which aims to inspire young people to solve social challenges in their community through authentically African mobile applications. “High youth unemployment in any economy, developed or developing, means young people are not acquiring the skills or experience needed to drive the economy forward. This restricts economic development and makes young people even less employable. Yet it also seems businesses across the UK are

struggling to recruit skilled people in a variety of sectors and roles. And look at the recent ‘slave labour’ outcry over a scheme to provide work experience and interview experience, which was deemed immoral as it was not voluntary,” she said. A restaurateur cannot recruit low-skilled people - why? Because the job is beneath some young people’s expectations. A food manufacturing company cannot recruit food science graduates - why? Young people are choosing qualifications in saturated sectors. If these companies were advertising for media graduates they could take their pick from hundreds of applicants. www.thesouthafrican.com/business

by NEIL LENNON AS a contractor in the UK temp market you’ve most likely been exposed to many ‘tax efficient solutions’. These choices range from simple Umbrella companies to fairly complicated offshore tax products. For most contractors the choice is typically between these options: Remain PAYE, Umbrella Company or Limited Company. Of those three, PAYE is the simplest solution, however the least tax efficient. The Umbrella and Limited company solutions both offer tax efficiency and the choice really depends on your personal circumstances. So what is the difference between Umbrella and Limited Companies? AN Umbrella solution is a structure set up by your payroll company, of which you become an employee. Your pay is processed

through the company and tax is calculated after offsetting any claimable expenses, which are in turn added to your net take home pay. In essence you are using expenses to lower your taxable income to reduce your effective tax rate. A Limited company is a legal structure that is set up with you as the sole director and sole shareholder. Your pay is processed via the limited company, taking advantage of expenses and corporation tax. As a director of the company you earn a salary and expenses and as a shareholder you earn dividends. In essence you are minimising your tax liability by taking advantage of paying company’s tax instead of personal tax. So what is the best solution for you? Well to answer that question you will need to speak to an expert

who’ll be able to weigh up your personal circumstances; however as a general guideline you can use the following: Umbrella Company: if you are either earning less than £15/hour (based on the 35 hour week) and/ or you’re only contracting for a short period of time before going permanent and ceasing work. Limited company: If you are earning in excess of £15/hour and you plan on being a contractor for at least three to six months before becoming permanent or ceasing work. Tell us about your move from SA to the UK I came here in 1990 straight after university. My intention was to travel, which I did for a few months but started working at AC Nielsen in Oxford as a graduate trainee. However from a young age I'd had a passion for advertising, so after two years I moved to London and joined Saatchi & Saatchi. Did you find it hard to adjust culturally? I found the UK an easy place to live and the people were really friendly. Working in advertising I had to learn the cultural nuances such as TV programmes I hadn't grown up with but otherwise the work culture has been incredibly welcoming. You're head of both Engine and WCRS? When I left Saatchi and Saatchi

about 15 years ago, I came to work at WCRS which is an advertising agency. In 2004 we did a management buyout from the French owners Havas and transformed it into Engine. So WCRS is still an advertising agency but there are now eleven other subsidiaries that form part of Engine, the parent company. (Clients such as: BMW, Sky, Coca Cola, Santander and Weetabix). As head of an agency do you still interact directly with clients? I spend a great deal of time putting the right teams and talent together, but I'm still very hands on with clients. I love the fact that the ideas we come up with can transform their businesses. We're successful when our clients are successful. How does one get ahead in advertising? I think being very committed and focused on what you love doing. Make sure you do things better than anyone else. The way to get ahead is to have a real

understanding of all the various parts: PR, media, direct marketing, data and social media. Also be the kind of person who puts her hand up and says: 'Yeah, I'll help you solve that problem'; not necessarily doing extra work but coming up with new initiatives. I also think it's about being the kind of person who is curious and hungry to learn rather than jaded or cynical. You manage more than 700 staff. What lessons have you learned about managing people? I think absolutely treat other people how you want to be treated. The challenge in leadership is judging when to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself and when to empower others to lead. The world of advertising is transforming rapidly. How do you deal with this? The last three to four years have seen incredible fragmentation and complexity. Anyone with an iPhone and a keyboard can now be a broadcaster and the power of personal opinion strongly influences culture. The challenge is to translate this into value for businesses and brands. Digital and social media can marry to make a really good joint platform. Plus, where does PR begin and social media end? With the complexity of these disciplines, it's hard to judge the effect each one has. It's like an orchestra. You have all your instruments in place, but as conductor you make sure that they are making music rather

than noise. What's been the hairiest moment in your career? I think the biggest risk we've taken is during the management buy-out of WCRS. We all remortgaged our homes to buy the company and turn it into what it is today, which is a community of different businesses all working together. In terms of your career, where next? I absolutely love what I do. As long as I'm being challenged and learning new things, there's no need to do anything else. I've not got an exciting answer for you I'm afraid! I'm not planning on going anywhere.

What's your extracurricular passion? I'm chairman of the board developing a new Jewish Community Centre in North London. It's being built at the moment and will open next year. There'll be a performance hall, a cinema, a kitchen and nursery. It's open to anyone interested in Jewish culture. www.jcclondon. org.uk Any parting words for our readers? I do feel like London is still a place where South Africans can make a huge contribution. www.thesouthafrican.com/ business

Calvin Cook

Owner of Cook Movers & Storage by PAUL HARRISON Born: Pietermaritzburg, South Africa How long in UK: Going into my third year now Background: I matriculated at Maritzburg College then studied Business Management and Entrepreneurship at Varsity College in Cape Town Motto: Just because it’s hard, doesn’t mean you can’t do it

What do you do in your job? I run a Removals & Storage company based in South West London. Most people call this business a ‘Man & Van’, which is one of the services I provide. I also provide customers with long or short term storage options, as well as a packing service. Most days I

am out giving estimates to clients, moving homes or offices, sorting out the books or researching innovative ideas to market my business. What’s the most exciting thing about your job? I would say one of the exciting things is the fact that I drive around the whole of the UK. The English countryside can be spectacular. I have been lucky to see so much I would never had the chance to otherwise – but I still have a lot more to see! What is the most challenging thing about your job? Every day presents itself with new challenges and obstacles, that’s the joy of the job. Everyday is different and that’s what keeps me on my toes. Tell us an interesting story

related to your job: Let’s just say, I have seen some interesting things in storage units… What are your future plans? My future plans are to grow the business a bit more but not to lose touch with the value of personal

treatment of each client. At the end of the day I just want to be happy and provide for my family. Do you think being South African helps you in your job? For sure, being a South African definitely helps. I have built a brand that represents honesty and

reliability with a hard-working attitude and fortunately these are also traits that have become synonymous with us South Africans working and living here in the UK. I am proud of my ‘South Africanness’ and my customers respond well to it.

CSR – lip service or community service? CORPORATE Social Responsibility (CSR) policy functions as a built-in, selfregulating mechanism whereby a business monitors and ensures its active compliance with the spirit of the law, ethical standards and international norms. It’s a term bandied around a lot but are companies actually doing enough to make a difference to the community around them? Some companies are very focused on their CSR while others may not even be aware of it. One thing I have noticed though was when there was a heavy selloff in the financial markets and the credit crunch kicked in, CSR was one of the first things to lose funding and focus. Let’s be honest here, businesses focus on what makes them margins. To quote Stephen Covey, if there is “no margin, there is no mission” and unless the companies were innovative in using their CSR as a Unique Selling Point when tendering for new business, this is likely to be one of the first areas that lose focus. However, a company that can show how its CSR adds to the benefits of their prospective or current clients can make its CSR very profitable. That takes some innovation. Sail along this large lagoon around Rodrigues for a few hours and take in one breathtaking view after the other.

Rodrigues Island – Mauritian paradise Could this be the most enchanting boat trip in the Indian Ocean, wonders Lize de Kock as she sets sail on a blue lagoon... by LIZE DE KOCK A WOODEN sailboat awaits me across the beach by the turquoise Indian Ocean lagoon, as if I have waded through the warm tropical sea right into a film set. To my right a small Rodriguan boat is painted with cartoonlike pirate signs. Ahead of me Captain Christophe holds out a hand to help me onto his boat bound for Ile aux Cocos, a small island reserve in the large lagoon surrounding Rodrigues Island in Mauritius. Soon the story behind his Ile aux Cocos tours unfolds. Rodrigues Island has its own special way of building perfectly symmetrical fishing boats. However, Christophe went to work in France for a while and met someone there who lived inside the belly of a boat. This encounter changed his life in that Christophe learned the art of building traditional wooden sailboats and brought the skill back to Rodrigues. Today Christophe has the most beautiful boat in all of Rodrigues. The sailboat he built is now the love of his life and also his bread and butter. And so he takes good care of her and makes day trips to the protected bird sanctuary of Ile aux Cocos, entertaining tourists with his own special flavoured rum. His boat is always equipped with a bottle of rum infused with fresh limes, local honey and Madagascan vanilla. I must be turning into a pirate princess as it surprised me to find the sweet rum so delightful. Whether it’s the rum, the pure oxygen or the tranquil lagoon, but by the time we reach Ile Aux Cocos I feel like someone waved a magic wand over me. As if enchanted I step onto the soft beach scattered with sea shells and walk into a paradise of tropical birds. The island is named after the birds’ eggs or ‘cocos’ originally found on the island, rather than the coconut trees, says our guide. He

introduces me to the birds: mostly Noddies, lesser Noddies and Fairy Terns. The latter are my favourite – pure white birds that hover in one place and flutter their wings, creating a Tinkerbell effect. We also see a tiny red cardinal, native to Madagascar and commonly found in forest areas all around the Indian Ocean islands. Our lunch is a spread of cold grilled fish, mixed salad, potato salad, octopus salad and chili paste. No fires are allowed on Ile Aux Cocos so lunch was prepared early in the morning by Christophe’s mom. She is clearly an exceptional cook and I can taste the love that went into the preparations. We wash the deliciousness down with a bit of South African rosé and move back onto the rum after a dessert of coconut cake and sugared peanut sweets. Back on the boat there is no trace of the real world left in me and laughter flows freely as we sail along this large lagoon around Rodrigues for a few hours, taking in one breathtaking view after the other. By the time Christophe drops anchor for a bit of snorkeling just off the shore at Anse Aux Anglais, I am the little mermaid in her fantasy garden of corals and dreams unda da sea. Later, when the sun sets in Anse aux Anglais, also known as English Bay, it’s time for an apéro at Bambou Restou, a sidewalk café on the beach road just downhill from my hotel room at Pointe Venus. Locals and tourists alike gather by the beach to watch the sunset. It’s a communal moment of awe. Some enjoy the stillness of watching the sunset, but for a nice social energy the best vibe on Rodrigues seems to be at Bambou Restou. Dario from Bambou Restou is a vibrant character who knows how to have fun. His bar is a treasure trove of collectibles bound to

as a taste of pizza with ‘secret ingredients’. All while the in-house performer Miko sets the soundtrack with a few passionate chords on his guitar and husky voice. It is intimate yet unobtrusive. Dario refuses to share his pizza ‘secrets’ even after a few drinks. Eventually I am left believing that it is just an ingenious combination of fresh herbs. On a really good night, guests might end up at Le Cocotiers nightclub around the corner, which plays everything from local sega music to pop. However, in favour of an early morning hike along the eastern beaches, I give in to the call of my very comfortable bed at the hotel.

make for interesting conversation after a few drinks. The bar also boasts a big screen for watching sport or music videos. Soon the barman whips up some bright orange cocktails with a bit of passion fruit. Served in martini glasses and garnished with yellow nasturtium flowers, they look really festive. The apéro (colloquial word for ‘aperitif’) menu at Bambou includes all kinds of little snacks to enjoy with cocktails. The exquisite salt and pepper octopus gives me flashbacks to the Sheraton hotel buffet in Brisbane where I experienced this delicacy for the first time. We also enjoy some sandwiches and shrimps as well

Tips for your trip: My top five excursions: •Visit Ile aux Cocos or Ile Hermitage by traditional boat • Hike along the eastern beaches • Cable slide from cliff to cliff at Tyrodrig • Francois Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve • Kitesurfing at the Morouk Ebony hotel Some restaurant favourites: • Coralie La Difference • Villa mon Tresor • Chez Jeanette • La Belle Rodriguaise • Chez Madame la Rose

A typical Rodriguan dish.

Trumps’ African game killing spree provokes outrage

The backlash against Eric and Donald Trump Jr over their game hunting expedition in Zimbabwe has been equalled only by the hatred directed at the South African tour company that took them on the controversial safari by NICOLE HOLGATE US billionaire Donald Trump’s sons Eric and Donald Trump Junior have been photographed posing over the carcasses of wild animals which they hunted and killed in Zimbabwe. Understandably this has caused outrage among animal conservation groups and ferocious reactions from Tweeters worldwide. In reaction to the comments, the younger brother apparently said, “I am a hunter. I won’t cower because of some losers.” People first became aware of the boys’ holiday activities thanks to a video on YouTube of the Trump brothers displaying animal trophies, including an elephant’s tail, taken during a 2010 safari. Other pictures show the boys holding the carcass of a leopard

and posing by a dead crocodile, water buffalo, civet, a kudu and several other animals. Among the two most outspoken critics was Michael Markarian, chief policy officer of the Humane Society, who called the hunting “frivolous and offensive,” and representatives of PETA wo stated that “elephants, buffalos and crocodiles deserve better than to be killed and hacked apart for two young millionaires’ grisly photo opportunity.” Eric said that he saw no reason to apologise for his actions, but did tweet, “I can assure you it was not wasteful. The villagers were so happy for the meat which they don’t often get.” The villagers might have been more grateful for the supposed amount of money the brothers had to hand over in order to get these

photo opportunities, according to Huff Post Green: “They paid at least a $2,795 trophy fee to kill a kudu and another $1,997 to kill a waterbuck, and who knows how many thousands more for the other living targets. Imagine how incredibly grateful any world hunger relief organisation would have been to get a donation of that size.” The Trumps hired a Pretoriabased company called Hunting Legends International for their safaris, who have since taken the controversial photos off their website. Cape Town conservationist Stephen Lamb had e-mailed the Trumps’ hunting host, Freddie Oosterhuis, who IOL reported as responding in Afrikaans with a string of four-letter words. Hunting Legends defended

When the lights go out, babies die

by JENNIFER MUNRO WELL, it seems Zimbabwe is bringing a whole new meaning to the term, ‘dark continent’. In spite of one of the most powerful hydroelectric plants in the world being situated within its borders, it is sitting in the dark and cooking over the fire again. Up to 16 babies are suspected to have died in Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare due to the power cuts which have affected incubators, ventilator support machines, blood pressure and oxygen monitoring machines and ECG machines that monitor heart patterns. Nurses and doctors are skulking about, fearfully complaining anonymously to reporters, confirming the deaths – but to what end? Does anyone with the power to act actually care? Jane Dadzie, the hospital’s spokesperson said they were only aware of four deaths, which were not attributed to power cuts. She said the children were just born prematurely. Hello? Isn’t that what incubators are for? She commented darkly on people with ulterior motives, spreading lies and suspicious political agendas. A senior medical officer who agreed to be interviewed on condition of anonymity said, “Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority is not cutting power. The power cables are now very old and are always developing faults. Yes,

there are generators but they are for some departments only, and they are not enough for the whole hospital. Visit this hospital at night and you will see that mostly the southern half does not have electricity. This part encompasses the labs, paediatric intensive care unit and doctors’ hostels and Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital. Recently we had to go for 48 hours without electricity.” Zesa spokesperson Fullard Gwasira acknowledged the frequent power outages at Parirenyatwa Hospital and blamed them on old power cables. He said as a matter of policy they do not load-shed critical areas like hospitals, water purification plants and security institutions. “Our infrastructure is also old and now prone to failure,” Gwasira said.”However, we react quickly because we value human nature, sanctity of human life and we regret such a scenario. As Zesa we have challenges, and people are aware of such challenges, and should have back-up power.” So while the Minister denies it, Zesa blames the cables and speaks of ‘challenges’, by which they mean ‘no money for power or repairs’, the doctors and nurses watch the babies die and the parents bury their offspring. And what are the people who were elected to solve problems like this doing? Well they are having

themselves against the volumes of hate mail they have received, stating that legal hunting is one way to fund the huge expense of maintaining private game parks. They say that the hunting is the only way to balance the overpopulation caused by the

limited sizes of game parks. However Lamb felt that this was an unsatisfactory argument, saying “That is a soundbite to lull the public into the false perception that something good comes out of this killing.” www.thesouthafrican.com/zimbabwe

Zesa has cut off power to three cabinet ministers, a number of senior government officials and some lawmakers, who have failed to pay bills exceeding US$100,000 going back to 2009. Gwasira said power is being cut off to all defaulters to recover US$450 million owed by consumers and businesses. “We are switching off power to everyone including Zimbabwe’s top politicians.”

TEAM SA @ THE Burry Stander Mountain biker LONDON OLYMPICS By DEBRA WIDDICOMBE WITH the London Olympics looming, many spectators think of the high profile events such as the opening and closing ceremonies and Usain Bolt in the 100m final. However, I caught up with a South African taking part in a less well known sport – professional mountain biker Burry Stander – and asked him about his expectations for London 2012. The 24-year-old is from Umtentweni and started riding mountain bikes at the age of 10. He was 15th in the Beijing Olympics and second in last weekend’s UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross country race in Pietermaritzburg. How did you qualify to become

an Olympic athlete? Basically, via UCI points, which is cycling’s world ranking system. How long have you been preparing for the London Olympics? My whole life, I guess, but in earnest it’s been a full-time goal since the last Olympics in Beijing. Do you bring your own bikes over from South Africa or do you buy new mountain bikes when you get to the UK? Our professional trade team has bikes all over the world. What is your goal for these Olympics? A medal, preferably gold. How many South Africans are there in the Olympic mountain biking team?

At the moment, it’s only me but we were hoping to have a team of three shortly. Is South Africa a good place to prepare for your races? Yes, South Africa has the best weather and terrain for training. Do you have to be really fit to do mountain biking and what skills do you need to be successful? Yes, you do, as it’s an endurance event and also one that requires great bike handling skills. Who are the current world champions in mountain biking?

Is it Team USA as California seems to have been the birthplace of mountain biking? I read that the man to beat is Frenchman Julien Absalon, having won gold in 2004 and 2008, and going for a hat-trick in London. Team USA hasn’t delivered an XC champion for some time. The current world champion is Jaroslav Kulhavy, from the Czech Republic and Julien Absalon is the reigning Olympic champion. Do you carry your own toolkit in

case of mechanical failure? Just a tire inflator and a plug for a flat. We have technical zones along the course where bike repairs can be carried out. If you want to get down to the Olympic course to watch Burry in action, the details are as follows: Venue: Hadleigh Farm, Essex Dates: Saturday 11 – Sunday 12 August Athletes: 80 (50 men, 30 women) Follow Burry Stander on Twitter: @africanmtbkid

these bonuses exist in both the Guinness Premiership and Heineken Cup. Hundred runs each for JP Duminy and Alviro Petersen in New Zealand by STAFF REPORTER ALVIRO Petersen scored his third test century at Wellington's Basin Reserve on Sunday, laying the ground for a dominant Proteas total of 474-9 declared on the third day of the final test against New Zealand. Petersen's batting partner JP

Duminy also reached a century after getting an unexpected chance in the starting line-up. "With Jacques (Kallis) out of the team it was vital that the rest of us stood up and made big scores, and that's what JP and I managed to do," Petersen said. The opener admitted that his

innings rated as one of his best. "There was pressure on me because I hadn't scored many runs in the first two test matches so I knew I had to perform. Mostly the pressure was coming from myself, but it was a great relief to make a contribution like this," Petersen said.

BULLS THUMP REDS South Africa’s Vodacom Bulls give Australian visitors a 61-8 hammering at Loftus Versfeld

T

by STAFF REPORTER he Blue Bulls thrashed defending champions the Queensland Reds 61-8 in Saturday's Super Rugby fixture at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, which brought them within one point

of the log-leading Stormers, who they'll face this weekend in Cape Town. The home team dominated the injury-hit Australians, bringing back memories of the Bulls beating them 92-3 in 2007.

Fullback Zane Kirchner crossed in the first half and the Bulls added another seven tries in the second. Queensland grabbed a consolation try through winger Dom Shipperley but the 2011

winners were completely overpowered. The team hasn't won at Loftus since 2001. Meanwhile, the Stormers had to fight hard for their 24-19 victory over a gutsy Lions team at Ellis Park on Saturday. In that match,

Bryan Habana became the only South African player to score 50 Super Rugby tries. The Stormers and Bulls face each other in the last match of round six at Newlands on Saturday.
