ARE WE REALLY FREE?

Ahead of Freedom Day on Friday, our readers share their memories of that historic day, 27 April 1994, and how it has affected their lives since

T

by STAFF REPORTER his year Freedom Day marks the 18th anniversary of the first non-racial democratic elections. We asked our readers if they remembered the 1994 elections, if they voted in them, if they vote now and if they think we have truly gained our freedom. Fiona Jones, UK I remember the day so clearly. I was working for the IEC in Cape Town and after voting myself, I spent the next five days working up to 15 hours a day. Was a great experience. I still have the letter from the IEC thanking me for the job I did in the first democratic elections in SA. A little bit of history in the making. Andrew Sinclair, UK Why would someone not vote considering what we went through for the right to do so? I even vote in the UK local council elections because this right should never be taken for granted. Njabulo Thabiso Madlala, UK I couldn't vote the first time around because of age. But my grandmother did and I can still remember the day so clearly. Tears streaming down her face with the joy of the possibility for us. Something I suppose she never thought she would live to see. I hang on to that memory at least. Bongiwe Qwabe, Deputy High Commissioner to the UK For me, Freedom Day is the

Murder, robberies, rape, hijackings have affected nearly all South Africans, the cost of living is spiralling out of control and people are being taxed to death. So where will it end? When will the people of SA

Have left for the UK in any case. Noleen Richards, UK Voted for what it was worth... didn’t see a future there for my kids and me so left for the UK in 2001. So the only result I can see is that as a family we are scattered across the globe now! The screaming cake.

On “Do you think this 'racist' cake highlights the issue of female circumcision or is just ‘in bad taste’?” Karyn Romeis: It's just in bad taste. Especially from a country so concerned with political correctness that they are introducing a genderneutral pronoun for those who prefer not to be identified as male or female. Lenie Botha: Terrible - must ban it. Claire Wileman: That is disturbing, but I wouldn't label it racist. Angela Bentley: Would it still been seen as racist if it was of a white woman? Martie Kruger: I don't understand? Why racist? The artist

is a non-white. Bad taste though! Mandy Heyman: Wouldn't label this racist but would definitely say this is in bad taste. Doesn't highlight anything but lack of sensitivity, good judgement and actual thinking! There should never have been a cake that looked like that, not to mention this apparition sounded more like a man with a sore throat! Johann Hurter: No doubt this is quite shocking but then again so is the practice it intends to highlight and this is often the best way to draw attention to things. Clarence Lemmer: Why is everything non-white racist? Bad taste but not racist. Yolande de Klerk: I consider myself fairly open minded, but that's really just gross. Bad taste, yes. Can't see an issue with race. Nick Ross: Those crazy Swedes are just milling round taking photos, think it's hilarious. Just looks gross, particularly given the charity this is supposed to be in support of. Just good old bad European taste, definitely not racist... Diane Jolly: I don't think it's either; it's probably not to my taste, but then, so is a lot of art. And part of the job description of an artist is to provoke thought - and if they're

very good at what they do - action. Carole Krimchanski-Cooper: Actually it’s brilliant and got the international press they wanted. Everybody around the world is talking about it. Job done! Pieter Smit: Total overreaction.

On “Sign spotted in Blyde River, South Africa” Tammy Leigh O'leary: It's only fair to warn the drivers. Gerrit Volschenk Must be crawling over the border to us. Lodewyk Nel: Gesuip. Chris Lingley: Only in Africa. Rony Cambell: Are you sure this isn't a late 1 April prank? Otherwise brilliant. Amanda Beecher: Unbelievable! Fiona Steen Smith: Teehee, should have this sign in UK. Andre van Reenen: Looks like the saying that you should first learn to crawl before you can walk has gone full circle in that neck of the woods. Lizette Le Roux: Hulle moet dit in Londen opsit. Must be a new sign. Debi-Nikita Rathbone-Rentzke: Should get a few of those signs here for Ireland. Monica Woolard: perhaps they should have some of those here in Australia as well. Zayaan Adams-Cajee: This is

fake right? Michael Farrow: Those are needed here in Korea. Loma Loots: Now I assume that is giving drunks 'Right of way' in SA? Pedestrians, cyclists, drunk crawlers... there plunges the South African car market! Malie Engelbrecht: Het so "iemand" al in die pad gekry - nie snaaks in die donker nie. Spoek in the space “between Africa and not-Africa” Spoek Mathambo is a musician, writer, producer and designer, who wants to use his talents to conquer the world…

by NICOLE HOLGATE SPOEK Mathambo, aka 25-yearold Nthato Mokgata, has released his second album, Father Creeper and will be playing several UK gigs in May. After hearing the Sowetan-born South African musician’s first album, described as ‘township tech’, but which also included a cover of Joy Division’s ‘Control’, it’s clear he is a musician whose urge to create overrides any affiliation with genre or origins. Father Creeper is dark, driving, relentless, and according to him, strongly based on weird dreams he used to have. Every song is as individual and eclectic as his taste, fashion decisions and general output. When I spoke to him he was having a brief Bank Holiday weekend with his wife Gnucci Banana in her native Sweden. He is quiet, sincere, and very forthcoming about his music. When you write, are you in the persona of ‘Spoek’? Who makes the music? It’s just me making music. There’s no persona I write music in, there’s different characters coming in and out of songs, but whether I’m writing, or producing other people’s work, Spoek is just the name I write under, it’s my nom de plume. When you tour do you have a large band, or handle most of the instrumentation yourself? In America it was about five people, it’s been about four or five for the last two years. I do vocals, and I dance. On this next trip I might be running a lot of the digital and electronic stuff, we’re gonna see for the rehearsals. Do you often tour with artists you know? America was fun, a friend I grew up with was there: it was nice to be away with him and it was his first time in America. But for the tour in Europe we have a drummer I met in Oslo, from the Ivory Coast, who I’ve never worked with, and a bassist I’ve never met before, so we’re trying to mix it up.

Do you have plans for another album? I’m trying to get this next album done as soon as possible. There’s a lot of stuff I didn’t get to do that I desperately want to. And I’ve started writing so it’s underway. I think it’s going to be a lot simpler, the last album was pretty much me exploring the outer reaches of what I can do. It was really ambitious, me trying to do a whole bunch of stuff just because I had the opportunity, trying to do everything I wanted in one project. But this one I’m trying to focus on a particular sound. On the last album I was experimenting with different sounds, and I’ve been able to distil what my voice is in all of that. Critics have said you use a fusion of modern and traditional African sounds. I don’t think I’m very traditional, I think everything is really personal. It’s not a conscious effort to incorporate traditional African sounds or modern sounds, the music is more a reflection of who we are in between those spaces of Africa and not-Africa. Is there a label you would accept? I don’t mind being labelled, but I hate the idea of being labelled a world music artist. Some people do that, it irritates me. I hate the prospect that in order not to be labelled a world music artist I have to mimic exactly what the Americans and the Europeans do. At the peak of my creative ability I want to be known as an incredible artist in my own right. I’d like to make big pop songs that are part of the general popular culture lexicon. On this album, a lot of your songs have been described as quite political. I don’t think much of it’s political. As much of it is political as life is political, but a lot of it is personal as well. If you did a percentage chart you’d get maybe twenty, thirty percent of it being political.

Soweto-born Spoek Mathambo will bring his eclectic ‘township tech’ to Britain next month.

Are you still finding your own voice? Definitely, I haven’t been doing this for long, this is the first time I’ve produced music myself so I’m definitely moving towards finding it. I think now things will be a lot

more palatable, a lot simpler. I’ve learnt a lot in the past year. Is there a moment you had that changed things? Nope! It’s mostly studio work and learning by doing, making breakthroughs through doing stuff. And that’s the thing, all of the stuff I’ve put out has big skill landmarks, breakthroughs for me creatively. I’m putting out my best work each time. It’s weird but it’s good, it’s like teething in front of the whole world. It’s not like

I’ve been doing it in a shed for eight years, it’s like I’m learning and presenting it to the whole world. Spoek will be playing the following UK gigs in May: • 10 May: With La Femme at The Great Escape Festival, Brighton, 8pm, venue TBA • 16 May: Ruby Lounge, Manchester, 7.30pm • 17 May: Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, London, 8pm • 18 May: Bongo Room, Edinburgh, 7pm

Deon Lotz (left) and Charlie Keegan (right) star in South African film Skoonheid, which tells a tale of self-destruction.

“Skoonheid” hits UK screens

Lindsay Jardine reviews award-winning South African film “Skoonheid” (Beauty) as it’s released in UK cinemas by LINDSAY JARDINE SKOONHEID only drifts along on the friction caused by the contentious issues it explores. It’s an account of Francois, a 40-something white Afrikaner man who is married (albeit unhappily) and dabbles on the side with another man. In one scene, they meet at an out-of-the-way cottage, watch gay porn and romp. It’s terribly unattractive as many of the men sport beer bellies and the title of the film is in direct juxtaposition to anything in this short sequence. Because anything South African needs to have to have a racial element so that the international market has something politically relevant to see, there is a scene just before the orgy where a coloured (mixed race) man is told to scoot because there is a “no faggots or coloureds” rule. All things South African must have a racial element. It’s getting a bit old. Deon Lotz (Francois van Heerden) is excellent; without his screen presence there would be little to recommend this film. He almost consumes each shot and although watching him driving in his bakkie, watching him watch a house and watching him watch the beach becomes a bit monotonous, he deservedly won the Outstanding Performance by an Actor award at

the Zurich Film Festival 2011. Skoonheid is about this man’s self-destruction: the problem is that loose ends are not tied up so his moral and social demise is not explored in sufficient detail and this leaves a bad taste. The film ends with an insufficient foreshadowing of the consequences Van Heerden may have to face because of what appeared to be his attempted rape of Christian (Charlie Keegan).. Christian, son of an old family friend, floats through the film on his cloud of plenty – he is handsome, popular and wanting very little (except an iPod, which Francois buys for him but the viewer is left frustrated because the gift is never presented). The most poignant scene, which effectively explores the themes of lust and envy, what Skoonheid attempts, is in van Heerden’s hotel room. The scene is intense because, from the moment the characters enter the room, the viewer wonders whether Christian is requiting Francois’ ‘love’. Director, Oliver Hermanus, expertly dispels any ambivalence as Francois’ anger and disgust become visible when Christian nonchalantly presents him with a business idea that requires some capital. Van Heerden attacks Christian in an attempt to possess

him. Christian, slightly battered, vanishes – he has no further scenes; and the viewer, after this disturbingly moving performance is left wholly unsatisfied. This film is undoubtedly a portrait of Francois’ psychological journey from lust, envy and obsession to the maelstrom of his moral collapse. Hermanus’ exploration of the man’s selfdestruction would have fared better had Skoonheid been a short rather than a feature. We follow Francois from Bloemfontein to Cape Town and watch his obsession for Christian mount. We witness the painful culmination of events in the hotel room but everything in between and after is trying to discern the logic in some agitating slips of reason which, had the film been cut by 85 or so minutes, might not have been an issue. The OPTIMIST KAREN DE VILLIERS

Not fair but not boring either... WE all do it. Screw up. Sometimes big time and sometimes just because. In our small lives, we panic when we make big mistakes, like missing a flight, or depositing money into the wrong bank account. Annoying things like yesterday, was so busy texting, I completely missed my station and ended up in Barnes. As long as we do not murder or embezzle or try to take a midnight tour through some dodgy areas, our screw-ups are relatively low on the Screw-Up Scale. Ten out of ten for this tragic little steenbokkie in South Africa last week. Newborn, hidden in some long grass by a doting mother, the tiny infant totters out only to be met by a mighty leopard having a siesta. What are the odds? Unwittingly, and in need of some ‘one to one’, the tyke sidles up to the leopard, who remains perfectly still, and nestles between the cat’s paws. Perhaps it was the need to suckle, an attempt that most likely extracted the ultimate price, but after a while of eyeing his prey, one (and sounds so much better in Afrikaans) ‘gaps’ and it is all over. This was a screw-up of gigantic

Fascinating photo project explores Xhosa initiation ceremony

Swedish photographer Anders Ryman, author of ‘Rites of Life’, talks about his seven-year journey depicting traditional and modern rituals and ceremonies from all over the world, including a wedding in Soweto and a Xhosa initiation

Photographer Anders Ryman

by MARY ISOKARIARI What was the inspiration behind the Rites of Life project? I’ve always had a great interest in other cultures, studying anthropology before becoming a photographer and writer. I have travelled to and lived in many countries, and felt a strong human connection across the cultural boundaries. This is why I wanted to try to do something globally, showing both the variety of cultures and most importantly how alike we are as humans. Your book depicts more than

30 rituals. How did you decide which ones to delve into? I wanted the project to be about humanity and to achieve this, it was important to cover the whole circle of life from birth to death. It had to include rituals from all inhabited continents and from all the major world religions, plus a number of smaller localised ones. Ideally, there has to be a good mix between the traditional and contemporary ceremonies such as: modern marriages in Las Vegas and the high school graduation in Sweden. With this in mind, I tried to find the right balance and began with a list which of course changed over time. I quickly realised not every idea would work due to clashes of some of the ceremonies taking place at the same time. Were you shocked by what you witnessed at the Xhosa male initiation ritual in South Africa? No. Doing a project like this involves extensive research. You have to find out when the rituals are taking place and organise everything, so I knew very well what I was expecting. Despite taking a number of photographs of the ritual, I wasn’t able to photograph the actual circumcision with it being the most sacred part of the ritual. I knew the Xhosas wouldn’t have wanted it captured, which I respected. Regarding following their rules, there is one picture when the initiates are smearing themselves with butter before returning home after about a month of living in seclusion. I was a little bit late for this part of the ritual and with the initiates naked, I decided to approach the scene from behind. However, I was told to take pictures from the front which is when I saw that the initiates were wearing penis sheaths of white cloth. When I asked them why, I was told it was because they were not allowed to show their penis after being circumcised, especially during the welcoming ceremonies when they would only be wearing a blanket. The young boys in the photographs were completely naked because they had not been circumcised. They had stayed with the initiates as helpers and were preparing themselves for the return home. How long were you in South Africa? I spent three weeks in SA which I enjoyed immensely, it’s such a

beautiful country. I worked mainly in Knysna and the Eastern Cape, where the Xhosa traditionally come from. However, with the whole Xhosa initiation taking roughly a month to complete, I wasn’t able to capture the entire process. I did manage to get the majority of it, which was great. How did the locals treat you? Did they feel you were invading their privacy? Not at all. People were always welcoming. Usually people are proud of their culture, happy to share it with others, although there may be sacred parts. During this project, I never came home without photographs of the rituals that I witnessed. Which ritual had the biggest impact on you? I always find this difficult to answer because each ritual had a different type of impact on me in one way or another. But from a photographer’s point of view, I think the Xhosa initiation is particularly interesting. The white paint used in the ritual is so

graphic, which makes wonderful photography. The Sunrise Dance of the Apache in Arizona is another one. This is held when a girl has had her first menstruation and is about to enter adulthood. It is an amazing ritual that goes on for four days, where the girls are dressed in traditional buckskin clothes. For the duration of the ceremony they inherit the magical healing powers of Changing Woman, the mythological mother of all Apache. How did you overcome language barriers? It is vital to work with people who belong to the culture, have intimate knowledge of it and can speak both the local language and one of mine (usually English). This then makes it easier for them to explain what is happening and help translate when necessary. I think people are generally happy to open up their lives and help those who are interested in their culture. Book available on www.ritesoflife.com

by STAFF REPORTER MULTI award-winning Cape Town theatre company Isango returns to London for a four-week season at Hackney Empire from Friday 11 May to Sunday 3 June 2012. The Hackney Empire, supported by the Columbia Fund, will present Aesop’s Fables, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists and La Bohème. Isango’s Aesop’s Fables is a musical by Mandisi Dyantyis and Pauline Malefane with a script by Peter Terson. Although Aesop is portrayed as a Greek, the production is set in South Africa’s recent past. Aesop was historically a slave and in Terson’s script he ‘learns that liberty comes with responsibility’ as he journeys to Mount Olympus, meeting his animal characters on the way. The production is adapted and directed by Mark DornfordMay, with choreography by Lungelo Ngamlana. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, a musical adaptation by Stephen Lowe of Robert Tressell’s seminal work, opened at The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town in 2010. Isango was the Company in Residence for its first year. The book is considered one of the most influential 20th century socialist novels. Tressell spent much of his early life in Cape Town and the plot bears hidden traces of his life in the then Cape colony. Isango’s version, Izigwili Ezidlakazelayo, moves the action to an apartheid era 1950s Cape Town with popular and struggle songs from that time. Hackney Empire and Eric Abraham present The Isango Ensemble production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists directed by Dornford-May with music by Malefane and Dyantyis. Isango's version of La Bohème will transfer the story from the garrets of Paris to the townships of South Africa. The music will be played on marimbas and steel pans in a style similar to the company's Olivier Award-winning The Magic Flute, which was seen at the Young Vic in 2007 and the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2008. The townships the performers come from are among some of the world's highest infection areas for tuberculosis. In the company's extended families many are living with the daily realities of TB. Hackney Empire and The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria in partnership with Isango Ensemble present La Bohème adapted and directed by Dornford-May, with music directors Malefane and Dyantyis and words by Peter Cann and Isango Ensemble. Hackney Empire is at 291 Mare Street, London, E8 1EJ. Tickets from £8 to £24 can be bought on www.hackneyempire. co.uk or Box Office 020 8985 2424 More details can be found at www.isangoensemble.org

When NEPAD was established there was a great deal of talk about SA being the 'Gateway to Africa'. To what degree does SA fulfil this? Not to the same degree. South Africa was the standard bearer in terms of infrastructure and resources, but other countries have advanced and established themselves in the game. Kenya is four hours away from every African country, so is establishing itself as the hub of Africa. Then you have Nigeria and Ghana, who have the people and resources. South Africa is no longer the only gateway to

Africa, rather the proven way into Africa. Do you see that as missed opportunity? I don't think it's a question of what South Africa has done wrong, rather what the others have done right. South Africa has grown by three percent, and is behaving like a mature economy. The growth of the others seems more dramatic because they started from a lower base and had further to go in a shorter time. South Africa has a role to play in helping other sub-Saharan countries to develop. Many countries take inspiration from what South Africa has achieved politically and financially. There is a great deal of positive rhetoric about Africa as the emerging powerhouse. What are the biggest challenges facing companies investing in Africa? People need to realise they are coming to a continent where things will be done differently from the way they are used to. They will have to learn to adapt, to be fluid in their thinking. The success of Coca Cola is down to having adapted in two typically African ways. Firstly, they learned that they must partner with smaller distributors and secondly, whereas before they could sell in greater bulk since people get their pay packets weekly, adjustments had to be made to sell in smaller units in a more

Africa is filled with opportunities. Speak to the experts on how best to manage them.

widespread fashion. So what would be your best piece of advice? You are welcome to come to Africa, but don't come expecting to do business in the way you already do. At the same time do not sacrifice your global vision. American business schools tell you to 'think global, act local': whereas with Africa you need to 'think local, but act global'. By that I mean truly understand the local headspace and only then maintain global standards of delivery. How much reciprocal business is happening on the global stage? Companies are creating global brands informed by the African condition but that meet global standards. You have SAB Millers, Investecs and Old Mutuals operating all over the world. Another example is M-pesa. Kenya exported M-pesa to the world and it’s now used as the Vodafone standard for mobile banking. Some are wary of the new wave of investment in Africa and see it as re-colonisation, is this a fair assessment? China is in every African country except for Swaziland. Is it colonisation? Late Malawian president Mutharika said in Time magazine that when China comes to your country, they don't dictate the terms, they just give you the aid and you do what you want with it. Colonisation in my mind is

about imposition of values. Now it is a two-way interaction; Africans are actively participating in what happens in Africa. Is enough of the investment filtering down to grassroots members of these societies? More and more populations take an active political role in governing their countries. In Ghana they have taken the aid they received and used it to create the fastest growing economy on the continent and one of the top five in the world. International companies looking to invest are at times dismayed by seemingly arbitrary rulings such as the demand that every Zimbabwe company be 51 percent 'indigenous' owned. How should they respond? In concept and in practice indigenisation can do some good. The concept guards against companies coming to Africa, doing business and simply taking profits out of the country. In South Africa it's known as 'Black Economic Empowerment' and comes in the form of guidelines, rather than being forced. So to do business with government you need to have some degree of indigenisation. It was created to limit exploitation without development. THREE INSIGHTS INTO: Dealing with payday loan debt

Important information for PPS policyholders If you have a PPS Sickness and Permanent Incapacity Benefit or PPS Professional Disability Provider policy and are currently living and working in the UK, you should check whether your policy benefits are still sufficient for your needs. In some cases, higher UK earnings for graduate professionals and the effects of currency fluctuations mean that PPS members could need to purchase more units to maintain their level of cover. However, records show that many members simply maintain their contributions at South African levels. In the event that you should need to draw on your policy, that could mean you will find that your cover does not provide the level of benefit you need.e RSM Tenon has been appointed by PPS to develop it’s UK services for members. by PAUL HARRISON MILLIONS of cash-strapped consumers are taking out payday loans. Some of these companies charge interest rates of as much as 4,000%. Quite often the loans are taken to ‘just get by’. Research shows that 7% of people surveyed – equivalent to 3.5 million adults in the UK – are considering taking out a payday loan in the next six months. The problem is that more than 46% of people researched are struggling to make it to payday every month. A short term loan and knowing exactly what is owed on a given date may work for a few but many fail to meet the repayment debt, resulting in an initial loan of £300 after a couple of months with added interest and charges equating to £1,000! Clearly the profit being made by these companies arises from the money they make on people deferring these loans and paying the charges/ interest on top. So the question is, “What do you do if you owe payday loans and can’t actually pay them back?” Paul Harrison consulted Andrew Sellar, a consumer loophole specialist at Gback.co.uk, helping

consumers with all manner of debt problems and consumer advice. I can’t pay them back, what can I do? Write to your payday loan company now, saying you have been selected for redundancy at work, as the company is failing and as a result you won’t be able to make the payment date so wish to go onto a monthly payment plan. They will write back and suggest a payment arrangement. You have a choice now, either to suggest any amount you are happy to pay, or accept their offer. They will try to call you and text you – one tactic is to call you at work, so first of all send them a letter saying they are in breach of the administration of Justice Act 1970, and the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. That will put a stop to that. Will they clear out my bank account? Unfortunately in more cases than can be cited here, as they have your bank details, they will debit your account for the full amount, most of the time in small incremental amounts, until there is no more money to take. Go to another high street bank, open a basic account and swap all your How can I ask the payday loan companies to put me on a repayment plan? OK, first of all write down all income and expenditure accrued over a month, showing the payday lender that it will not be possible to meet their current repayments as you have priority debts eg. gas, council tax, rent etc that do not leave enough every month. You need to say that as responsible lenders they need to listen and adhere to your financial situation and that you are prepared to repay back ‘X’ amount every month only. I am scared the payday loan company will clear my account when my wages go in. Do you

direct debits to this account. Leave only the agreed amount you are paying the payday loan lenders every month in the old account. I want to pay it off now my situation has changed. Write to your lender stating that your current financial situation has changed and you would like to offer a full and final settlement. Offer 30% of the original amount and negotiate from there. Make sure the final agreed amount is sent in writing, so everyone is clear on the arrangement. think that will happen? This is a sad but very real fact, I had one woman lose her entire month’s wages in one hour from two payday loan lenders clearing it after she was told she only had to pay back a small amount. The lender is entirely allowed to do this. So, open a brand new account at another bank. This is the only real way to ensure you have a safe haven. Just remember to swap all your direct debits over. Rand strengthens on Spanish bond sale THE South African Rand traded between 7.80 and 7.93 to the US Dollar during the period between 17 April and 23 April 2012. The Rand also traded between 12.43 and 12.61 to the British Pound during the same period. The Rand ended midweek trade by losing ground to the US Dollar. This is probably due to the news of the persisting worries over the Spanish national bank’s bad debt ratio (which hit a two decade high). Risk appetite was thoroughly tested with a Spanish bond auction coming up towards the end of the week. "The news flow has turned in favour of the Rand recently (but) global factors could yet trip up the currency," said Standard Bank strategist Nomvuyo Guma. "Apart from the Spanish auction, today's US data is likely to dictate

the market's direction along with a slew of speakers, including the IMF's Lagarde." By the end of the week the Rand was slightly firmer against major currencies, buoyed by a “successful” auction of Spanish bonds. “The successful auction allayed fears that Spanish banks are running out of cash to buy their sovereign debt”, RMB said. There was little movement in the market on Friday after the Rand big moves during midweek trade. GBP / ZAR: 12.57 EUR / ZAR: 10.31 USD / ZAR: 7.82 Correct at 8am 23 April 2012 UK time. Keeping a business ship-shape

South African Kyle Tiltman, of Five Oceans Moving & Storage, chats to us about his family-run business in England

by STAFF REPORTER BARRY and Kyle Tiltman have proven that family-run businesses offer a great combination of personal service and professionalism. Kyle chats about how his family’s company, Five Oceans Moving & Storage, offers the best hands-on service in town. How long have you been living in the UK? We left South Africa in 1998 and have been living in England and Southern Ireland. How did Five Oceans Moving start up? My dad started his own moving and storage business in Ireland and sold that in 2006 to an international moving group just before the housing bubble burst. At the end of 2007 we relocated back to England and set up our head office for Five Oceans Moving & Storage in Oxford. Tell us a bit about the company.

Five Oceans Moving is a familyrun business with our head office in Oxford. We have two other branches, one in London and one in Birmingham, so we cover the South of England. We realise that no two moves are the same and we offer personal service for our customers whether they are moving their whole house or just a few boxes. We have a weekly service to Italy via France and Ireland and also offer a regular service to the rest of Europe. We also hship a large number of consignments to all corners of the world. Recently South Africa has experienced a boom of expats returning, and we shipped four 40-foot containers from our head office last week. As a South African and with our contacts within the moving industry we know the South African market and its pitfalls.

WORLDWIDE TAX SOLUTIONS

Is your tax situation a mess? Allow WWTS to clean up for you! A World Wide Tax Solution Company is the answer to all your tax problems and needs.

What is your role? As directors we are responsible for everything, from customer service to answering the phone, dealing with enquiries, health and safety, training our staff, getting the best possible rates for our customers, estimating volumes to be shipped, administration and arranging shipping. As our policy states we will not employ part-time labour, sometimes when we are busy I can be seen wrapping furniture for export, driving trucks, loading containers or driving the forklift in our warehouse. As business owners we have learnt to adapt to be able to do all the jobs of the moving trade. How has the company grown and developed since you first started it? Over the last few years it has been a bit of a struggle as we all know the housing market has taken a huge downturn worldwide. At Five Oceans we have offered a first-class service to our customers and we believe this has paid off, as we have been really busy over the last nine months. We have had to increase our vehicle fleet size, train new staff on our moving teams, and increase administration staff in our shipping department as we have seen a large increase in moving within the UK and abroad. What puts Five Oceans Moving a cut above its competitors? Five Oceans Moving & Storage is a family-run business. We are strategically located to cover southern England. We get to know our customers’ needs and offer services that match. We take pride

in our work and only use the best packing materials available. All materials used are recycled. Our purpose-built modern fleet of vehicles are regularly serviced and are all LEZ compliant. All our staff are fully trained by BAR and all our staff are permanently employed with Five Oceans Moving, unlike other major moving groups who use untrained temporary staff. We offer a quality service at reasonable prices. What are the most important criteria to consider when choosing a moving company? In today’s market, when so many companies (big or small) are being liquidated, pay by credit card. Yes, it costs you a small bit more, but you are protected if the job is not done and will get your money back. Ensure they offer you insurance and get an insurance certificate for shipping, as ships are still being hijacked by pirates; containers are still being lost at sea. Remember accidents do happen and when they do you want to be covered. With regards to price,

cheapest is not always best; these are your possessions that have taken you years to buy. You want your goods to get to the other side in a reasonable time and in one piece; not lost, stolen or broken. Ensure customs clearance is handled efficiently, as long delays from incomplete paperwork can create huge bonded storage bills for you on the other side that could be avoided if handled correctly. Does the moving company know the regulations of the country you are moving to? If your goods arrive before you have found a house will your moving company store it for you? Does the company have a good reputation? Ask for references from their customers! What are the top management tips you’ve picked up during your time with Five Oceans Moving? Customer service! Customer service! Customer service! For more on Five Oceans Moving & Storge and its services, visit www.fiveoceansmoving.co.uk, email kyle@fiveoceansmoving. co.uk or call 01865 349017.

Are you a doctor wanting to return to South Africa? Private Emergency Medicine Management Company in South Africa launches global recruitment drive

THE GRAFT IS GREENER

Thapelo Mncube Model, producer, writer and rapper by MARY ISOKARIARI

Name: Thapelo Mncube Born: Johannesburg, South Africa Time in London: Nine years Job: Model

How did you get into modelling? I have been modelling for nearly three years. I got into it because my family and friends kept encouraging me to pursue it as a career. So I I decided to get a portfolio done and see where it would take me. I signed up with an agency but quickly realised they didn’t have enough work on their books so I left and signed up to my current agency, Daniel Brown Street. What do you do in your job? I do a lot of music videos and photo shoots, which are fun. One of the most memorable ones was for the musician Wretch 32, where I played a blind graffiti artist in the video for his single, ‘Tractor’. It was such a great experience. I tend not to tell anyone what I am doing until I have something to show. So when my family and friends saw the music video they were so shocked that they couldn’t believe it was me. Most exciting (and challenging) part of your job? The most exciting element is seeing the

final prints of your work that you can share with your loved ones. The most challenging would be having the confidence to pose in front of the camera and portraying different characters. Future plans? I hope my modelling really takes off, it would be great to work on larger campaigns. Besides modelling, I am also training to be a motor vehicle technician at college, fixing cars in my spare time to gain more experience. I am also part of a rap group called Ezase UK, a Zulu word meaning ‘from the UK’ in English. We write and produce our own hip-hop, house and kwaito music as well as producing music videos for the tracks, which can be viewed on YouTube. Is there is a strong South African community in London? Yes, definitely, I really think it’s important for us to support one another and show unity. Friends who are DJs are happy to help promote us by playing our songs in the clubs. I would like to see the South African entertainment industry really take off this year. Who has been a big inspiration to you and why? Without a doubt it has to be Nelson Mandela. Throughout my life he has always been there in the background, like a surrogate grandfather. When I came to London, I had the hardworking mentality of Mandela. A lot of my classmates didn’t know who he was, which took me by surprise. I strive to be better in life because Mandela set the way for me. I think teenagers today should go out there and be the best that they can be. We only have one life so why waste time, go and do something constructive.

by STAFF REPORTER ER Consulting Inc, South Africa’s largest private Emergency Medicine Management Company, has launched an international recruitment campaign aimed at helping South African doctors working overseas to return home. The company operates 14 emergency units across South Africa and has recently decided to cast its recruitment net overseas to help reduce South Africa’s growing need for well qualified doctors. The campaign is aimed at South Africans mainly in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. "As the breadth of our business continues to expand, we face an ever increasing need for suitably qualified doctors," said Dr Izak Maree, Managing Director of ER Consulting Inc. “We have found that many South African doctors living and working overseas are in need of a career back home and that they may be unaware of all the opportunities available in healthcare in South Africa. Maree said that by marketing our country and the opportunities in healthcare in South

Africa, they had in the past been able to successfully recruit South African doctors from abroad. “Not only are we proud to bring our South African doctors home, but we also find that the international experience that these doctors bring back enhances the quality of medical service delivery, not only for our company, but for South Africa as a whole.” He added, “We see the shortage of healthcare practitioners and the advent of NHI not as a threat, but as an opportunity the opportunity of bringing our doctors home to an environment where they can help grow our country and improve medical services to those who are most in need of them. Maree said he looked forward to being an active roleplayer in the field of Emergency Medicine well into the future. “We embrace the expansion of improved medical services to all the country’s citizens,” he concluded. Poached Rhino & Rare Tortoise Does Mugabe mind that we think he’s a few noodles short of a chow mein?

by JENNIFER MUNRO HAVE you ever wondered why Robert Mugabe confidently and arrogantly drops his trousers and shows his well-fed rear to his critics in the West? Well, while we think he’s mad, refuse to speak to him and bleat pathetically from our ivory towers about the unfairness of it all, the Chinese throw money at him – big money – enough money to allow him to oppress his people, buy really good security and keep his wife in Manolo Blahniks forever. Once the Chinese were reassured that Morgan Tsvangirai wasn’t going to make any difference to anything, they invested more than 10 billion dollars in Zimbabwe, buying themselves mining rights, and it seems, access to rare tortoise meat and rhino horn. Zimbabwe is now being over-run by 5,000 hungry, undersexed Chinese miners with a penchant for reptile dinners and aphrodisiacs. While we, burdened as we are by our social and moral consciences, turn up our delicate noses at Mugabe’s brand of communist dictatorship and the idea of tortoise meat, the Chinese are in there chopsticks ‘n all; snouts in the trough, rolling around in the fabulous mineral and animal wealth of this country where there is no electricity anymore, people

Gono is ‘world’s worst banker’ by STAFF REPORTER ZIMBABWEAN Reserve Bank Governor, Gideon Gono has been called the world’s worst banker by the International Monetary Fund mission chief, Sharmini Coorey. According to Coorey, Gono has been dubbed within IMF circles as the only central banker in the world who liked to print money She went on to say that Gono had appeared unconcerned over the increasing central bank debt and saw his role as more of a development banker who could fix issues and gather goodwill by giving out money, whilst increasing his personal standing at the same time. Coorey also stated that Gono was completely authoritarian, despite how his public image may appear. In 2008, Zimbabwe’s inflation reached a world record high, until it was contained in2009.

actually starve, and previously extinct diseases decimate the population. The poor little endangered Bell’s Hinged tortoises, who have no wish to be fast food, have to run for their lives, and we all know that story ends badly for the tortoises. When police and animal welfare officials raided the Chinese workers’ homes near Bikita, in southeastern Zimbabwe recently, they found the meat and skeletal remains from 40 of the tortoises. They had been dropped into boiling water, while still alive, in order to separate the meat from the shell. A further 13 tortoises were discovered in steel drums without water or food. The naughty Chinese miners were sent home in disgrace with a slap on the wrist. According to The Guardian, rhinos in Zimbabwe are being wiped out completely to feed the huge demand for horns in China, and the poaching epidemic is spreading to South Africa where over 400 rhinos were killed last year, compared to only 13 in 2007. You do have to ask yourself if this sudden and dramatic rise in deaths is linked to the arrival of all those hungry, horny Chinese just over the border. So is Mugabe really mad? No! Just greedy and very clever actually. Does he mind that we

It’s the end of the tax year! Claim your tax refund at only a 12.5% fee Cartoon by Dr Terence FitzSimons.

1 in 3 people working in the UK are due a tax refund and you

think he’s a few noodles short of a chow mein? Not at all, just so long as the Chinese keep shovelling the cash in while simultaneously shoveling the wealth of his nation out. Back in Beijing there is a lot of inscrutable sniggering and backslapping going on, and that doesn’t bother him either, although on the bright side, rumours are spreading that the long-suffering ordinary Zimbabweans are just beginning to resent this new colonialism. They are watching their livelihoods and their children’s future turning into Chinese take-away, and it’s making them angry. That, in my opinion, is a fire worth fanning.

Benjani considers returning to SA premiership

by STAFF REPORTER FORMER Zimbabwe international, Benjani Mwaruwari, has been permitted by the English Championship side Portsmouth to leave his team. This decision to leave at the end of the season could see Mwaruwari return to the South African premiership. Pompey coach Michael Appleton told the 33-year old striker that he can leave the team whenever he wishes to. His departure will be a potential saving for the team that is currently under financial strain. It is reported that he will most likely stay on until the end of the season in order to collect his wage. Jomo Sono, owner of Johannesburg-based club Jomo Cosmos, failed to re-sign Mwaruwari earlier in the season. The player has, however, publicly stated that he would like to return

to SA before his career ends. Mwaruwari has chosen Sono, who is a trusted confidante of his, to be one of his coaches in a testimnonial game that will be played in Harare in May. The player recognises the ex-Bafana Bafana coach as being highly influential in his move to Europe. taxobc@1stcontact.com However, his move back to www.1stcontact.com/taxobc Cosmos will depend on whether they stay up this season. *£850 is roughly the average amount owed to a Tax Refund client. Other invites to the match in Your personal claim will depend on your individual circumstances. Harare include Bongani Khumalo, Lucas Radebe, Steven Pienaar, as well as El-Hadji Diouf of Senegal, Kolo Toure and Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast, Samba Sow of 44052_TR_South_African.indd 1 29/03/2012 Mali and Ghana's Michael Essien amongst others. The game will be a farewell to Zimbabwe’s national side from Mwaruwari who has formally left international football this year.

Top 10 UK festivals Start getting excited for an epic festival season with our list of the UK’s hottest musical events of the year by STAFF REPORTER SOUTH Africans in the UK love to travel. They love to hit the pubs with their mates and have a good laugh. And they love their sport. But there is one other thing expats living under the English ‘sun’ love as well. Festivals! And there’s no end to the musical goodness that comes with a festival, especially in this part of the world. Whether it be in a mudbath at Glasto (sadly, we’ll have to wait until 2013 for the next Glastonbury installment) or rockin’ out in Hyde Park, Britain’s festivals are varied, extensive and awesome. This year we’ve got everyone from The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) to Metallica hitting our shores plus a few homegrown heroes too. So check out our Top 10 UK festivals, check the bank balance and get the glad rags on because Festival Season 2012 is going to be epic. Enjoy! Download When: 8-10 June Where: Donington Park This festival has hosted some of the biggest names in headbanging and recently had legendary rockers AC/DC and Airbourne. Now in its 10th year, Download Festival is always a feast of metal and rock and the faithful will love this year’s lineup. Who: Metallica, Black Sabbath, The Prodigy, Soundgarden, Tenacious D and more. Lovebox When: 15–17 June Where: Victoria Park, London It’s authentic, it’s just so London. Not bad for a festival knocked together by good ol’ Groove Armada. Three days of heady music will have you in your element. Plus, it’s not far from home and in 2012 they’re celebrating a decade of ‘love’.

Who: Lana Del Rey, Hot Chip, Crystal Castles, Kelis, Friendly Fires and more. Homelanz When: 16 June Where: Boston Manor Park, London Second year out for this Saffa, Aussie and Kiwi festival of food, drink, culture and, of course, music. Muck in and support your fellow SA businesses and entertainers … many of them based in London, just like you. Who: Prime Circle, Alex Lloyd, Kora, I Am Giant and many, many more. Isle of Wight Festival When: 22-24 June Where: Seaclose Park, Newport, Isle of Wight. The original Isle of Wight Festivals were landmark moments for their time - they sit alongside Glastonbury and Woodstock in festival history. The first Isle of Wight fest in 1968 featured the likes of T- Rex and Fairport Convention. Who: Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Example, The Vaccinnes and more Wireless When: 6-8 July Where: Hyde Park, London Isn’t it awesome having Hyde Park just round the corner? First there’s Hard Rock Calling, then there’s Wireless. And while Snoop wont be headlining again this year, Fergie and her troupe of Black Eyed Peas will certainly bring the star power. Who: Rihanna, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Jessie J and more. Latitude When: 12-15 July Where: Henham Park, Suffolk

This festival has a more Euro feel about it than a Pommy one but it’s set on a grand old English manor and lets you dictate the mood. Florence and Vampire Weekend have been hits in the past couple of years but a host of newbies will make their own mark in 2012. Who: Elbow, Metronomy, Bon Iver, Paul Weller, Laura Marling and many more. V Festival When: 18-19 August Where: Chelmsford and Staffordshire We don’t know if Dick Branson will be riding a Virgin spaceship but it wouldn’t surprise us. This festival serves up a decent dose of pop, rock, rap and R&B, so there’s pretty much something for every good little consumer. Who: The Killers, Snow Patrol, The Stone Roses, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and many more. Reading When: 24-26 August Where: Reading (and Leeds) If they’re on the bill here, you know they love to play because they tear the roof off in one town, then head to the next and do it all again the very next day. Think indie, beer and even more fun! Plus it’s over the August Bank Holiday. Winner! Who: The Cure, Foo Fighters, Kasabian, The Vaccines, Kaiser Chiefs and many more. South West Four When: 25-26 August Where: Clapham Common Want to get your groove on? Then why not bop a weekend away at one of the world’s best dance fests. Plus Carl Cox is appearing in his UK Festival exclusive show. Who: Chase and Status, Carl Cox, Skrillex and many more.

TEAM SA @ THE LONDON OLYMPICS

Riaan Schoeman

Swimmer

BY KWAME WILSON

Name: Riaan Schoeman Age: 22 Hometown: Durban Event: 400m individual medley RIAAN Schoeman has made the shortlist for the South African Olympic team after clocking his second ‘A’ qualifying time at the SA Swimming Championships and Olympic Trials in Durban last week. The 22-year-old Durbanite made his Olympic debut in Beijing 2008 at the age of 18. With you bursting onto the scene at such a young age, how have you managed to remain grounded and focused on your long-term goals? Staying focused is one of my strengths as an athlete. When I was younger I always knew what needed to be done to get to the level of the international swimmers I looked up to. My parents also played a big part of my success, as well as my coach, who always told me that I must strive to achieve more. But basically just taking every day as it comes and focusing on the smaller details is what I have found to work best. How will the 2012 Games in London compare to the experience you had in Beijing four years ago? If everything goes according to plan I’ll be thrilled to compete in the 2012 Games in London. Beijing was a huge learning experience for me. Seeing how the greatest athletes in the world prepared before competition day

was a real eye-opener, I think I learned a great deal from 2008 and hopefully that will pay off in the near future. This time round I will be more focused on my preparations and doing what works for me. You broke the South African record set by Terrence Parkin and won gold at the International Meet in Osaka in 2007 – what achievement are you most proud of thus far? The meet in Osaka in 2007 is one of my proudest achievements.

I went in to the meet with no expectations and I shocked myself and family when I won the gold and broke the record. Another great achievement was being part of the SA Olympic Team in Beijing and placing 12th in the 400IM. Your younger brother Henri is a triathlete. What’s its like having another athlete in the family? Does he come to you for advice and guidance? It is really great having an athletic younger brother, he is really moving up the ranks in the

triathlon scene. We swim together and I often do my land training with him. We feed off of each other’s energy and that allows us to push each other to become better athletes. When I’m not in such an intense training phase he often asks me to lead him out in the swim leg of the triathlon, which is really enjoyable. With the Games being in London, SA athletes can expect a lot of support and camaraderie from expats. Are you looking forward to that?

Yes, I am looking forward to the support from the locals. I know a number of South Africans over there and I’m sure they will be cheering for the South African team in all the different sporting codes. Is there anything you’d like to say to all your supporters in the UK? As athletes we thrive on support from our fellow countrymen. Come and support Team SA! We look forward to seeing you there! www.thesouthafrican.com/sport

Team South Africa Olympic ambassadors announced

by STAFF REPORTER THE South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) revealed Team South Africa’s Ambassadors on Wednesday at a celebration in Johannesburg to mark 100 days until the 2012 London Olympics. Springbok Sevens star Cecil Africa, former Bafana Bafana captain and now retired football legend Lucas Radebe, golf sensation Ernie Els, retired international cricket ace Makhaya Ntini and Cynthia Tshaka – one of the first Laureus Ambassadors in South Africa as well as the founder of the Sports Heroes walk against HIV/Aids – were unveiled as the ambassadors.

With the theme being ‘Going for Gold’, the event was held, aptly, at Golf Reef City. Dignitaries who joined the festivites included Deputy Minister of Sports and Recreation, Gert Oosthuizen; Sascoc vice-presidents Hajera Kajee and Les Williams; Sascoc Chief Executive Officer Tubby Reddy and presidents of various national federations. Sporting hopefuls for the London 2012 Olympic Games, including track and field athletes and members of the national men’s hockey team, who will be leaving for their Olympic Qualifier tournament in Japan on Thursday, were also in attendance. “The role of the Team SA

Ambassador is to inspire and mentor the athletes competing at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while encouraging young and old people worldwide to become more active in sport,” said Reddy. Recently announced Team SA mascot Chukuru once again showed why he is the fans’ favourite, especially when he has his dancing boots on. Following Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s Magnificent Friday initiative before the Soccer, Cricket and Rugby World Cups, where South Africans were encouraged to wear green and gold on Fridays, Sascoc also launched a supporter’s shirt for Team SA Fridays.

MIND THE RUCK ROB FLUDE

Brisbane bogey broken

I learned three valuable lessons on Friday night in Brisbane. Firstly, the Stormers are clearly capable of victory, despite not having the services of their three most experienced and influential players. Secondly, Brisbane is unfathomably hot and sweaty all year round, even at the start of winter. And thirdly, when ordering tickets to a sports match in Australia, do make sure you don’t inadvertently purchase ones in an alcohol-free area, especially when there are eight thirsty blokes with you. Rookie error or just negligence from the guy at the ticket office? You decide. Having started their Super Rugby campaign with three straight wins, the Reds have slumped to four defeats in their last five games. Their night got off to the worst possible start when they lost their flyhalf and centre in the first quarter, and later had the big-haired number 8 Radike Samo playing inside centre. However, most rugby games are won up front, and the Reds still had seven players with Wallabies test experience in the forwards pack, and Will Genia and Rod Davies in the backs. Contrast this to the Stormers, who only had one non-test Bok in Tiaan Liebenberg (he played against the BaaBaas in 2007) and four Boks in the backline. If you want to describe the match in one simple sentence, the seasoned Reds were heavily bossed around by the youthful, energetic Stormers. As stadiums go, Suncorp is one of the better ones to which I have been. It has good sight-lines and food and drink are able to be purchased quickly. I managed to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone, scratching the venue formerly known as Lang Park off my rugby stadia bucket list, while also getting what has become an annual fix of seeing the team I have supported since their birth in 1998. I even wore a 1999 Stormers replica jersey, conjuring up memories of witnessing the “Men in Black” regularly destroy opposition at Newlands with

PIENAAR STINGS UNITED

Steven Pienaar’s dramatic late goal for Everton on Sunday is likely to prove crucial in the English Premiership title race

T

by STAFF REPORTER he South African skipper was in excellent form throughout the game, according to KickOff.com, and finished his performance with a neat finish that took his side to a 4-4 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar scored in the final seven minutes to salvage a point for the gallant visitors. This score blows the title race wide open ahead of next week's Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium. United are now only three points ahead of Man City, who have a superior goal difference of +6 over their rivals. With Schillo’s highly successful loan spell from Spurs at his former club there have been rumours that the Toffees were keen to re-sign him. However, the midfielder's agent Rob Moore has insisted no plans have been made about his future. "Steven is not looking past the end of season – he just wants to do the best he can do for Everton and make sure his name is spoken about in the way his ability deserves, he told KickOff.com "There have been no discussions about him staying there permanently or about him leaving Tottenham,” Moore said. Did you know? • Pienaar grew up in Westbury, Johannesburg • His nickname is “Schillo” after the Italian striker Toto Schillaci. • He was named South African Player of the Year in 2009 and Everton’s Player of the Year in 2009-10. • According to the Transfermarkt website, the 30-year-old’s market value is £5.3 million. • Follow him on Twitter @therealstevenpi
