‘KILL THE BOER’ GOES GLOBAL Boer Genocide protestors taunted outside Freedom Day event in London

by HEATHER WALKER A video showing a member of the ANC in London directing a tirade of ‘Kill the Boer’ hate speech at a group of Afrikaners caused a sensation when it emerged last week. The ‘Boers in exile’ had been staging a protest outside the Catford Assemblies of God church hall where a Freedom Day event with Ken Livingstone was held on Saturday 28 April. One of the demonstrators, Hans Earle, explained that they were trying to highlight the murder rate of white South Africans in SA. They held placards with slogans such as ‘Boer Genocide = African Famine’ and ‘Why so silent Mr Mandela?’ and ‘More than 3,000 farmers murdered since 1994′. In mobile phone video footage captured by one of the protestors, they are mostly ignored by the people arriving for the Freedom Day party. However one of them, who has been identified as Khaya

Thwala, is recorded talking to the protestors about nationalising the mines and the farms. Then seemingly for no reason, he approaches one of the placard bearers and says “Kill the Boer,” but stops his outburst when he realises he is being filmed. ‘Kill the Boer’ is the name of the struggle song Julius Malema and
his followers were banned from singing last year as it was judged hate speech. When we contacted Thwala for comment last week, he agreed to provide it but later declined, referring us instead to the statement issued by Abantu base Mzantsi (The People of South Africa), organisers of the Freedom Day
event, in which they denounced their comrade’s behaviour. “Abantu base Mzantsi condemns in the strongest terms, if true, that one of our comrades had an outburst to the self-proclaimed “Boer in exile” protesters as shown on TheSouthAfrican.com. It is totally unacceptable and wrong to continued on page 3...

....continued from page 1 say the least. “The said comrade, as a public figure, sub-task committee member of Abantu base Mzantsi, and knowing ANC policy and discipline should know better than to get publicly entangled in using an exclamation like that, not just wounding our stance on the day, but also defaming the South African constitution. “Necessary internal processes shall be instituted in line with our policies and procedures in dealing with this unfortunate situation to ensure it does not rear its ugly head again. “Although we share [the protestors’] concern about the killing of farmers, we believe their choice of venue of protest and the targeted audience were wrongly placed.” Both the ANC and the Democratic Alliance Abroad expressed the desire to work with South Africans abroad to facilitate a constructive discussion to work together to address the issue. Ludre Stevens, chairman of The DA Abroad, was at the Freedom Day event and said he was surprised when the protestors arrived, but acknowledged the right to free speech – “the cornerstone of a free society.” “We are aware South Africa faces one of the highest crime rates in the world and acknowledge that the protestors were trying to raise the profile of an issue that is important to them.” Read our readers’ responses to the video on page 4.

On “‘Kill the Boer’ disrupts London farm murder protest” Enrico: These protestors left South Africa, what do they want from the ANC? The economy of SA is still in white hands. The majority of people in managerial positions are white males. Black farmworkers are being treated like slaves on farms. The majority of farm attacks are crime-related and have nothing to do with politics. Blacks have bent backwards to apease whites and what did they receive in return... nothing. The national democratic revolution must and will continue! Grensvegter: This is the misconception that lies at the heart of our problems. Neither Old Mutual or Anglo American, De Beers or SAB Miller (all top 5 SA companies and Fortune 500 companies) are in the hands of any South African, white or black. It was the price the ANC paid to the UK and US to get into power. It is a fruitless act to nationalise the mines, when the mineral rights belong to foreigners. As to the farm attacks, they are more than political attacks, they are racially motivated as part of an ethnic cleansing process because the Boers are the biggest threat to Zulu supremacy. Know this, that
South African exiles claim to be racially abused at Freedom Day event in London.
after the Boers the other ethnic groups will follow, starting with xenophobic attacks on Africans not from South Africa and then the other ethnic groups. It has been done before and the Boers were the only ones that could stop them. Benson: The ANC governing body in South Africa does not recognise any foreign branches, this is a group of individuals who decided to form their own party with a self-appointed committee. The committee has gone around taking
over 150 people’s personal details, including ID numbers, promising them membership for an institution that is non-existent. None of those people have received any membership for over 16 months and some of them have paid a membership fee. ANC in London is non-existent. The Naked Truth: ANC couldn’t organise a piss-up in a brewery. The rest of the world sees this hence they have no grip in this city.
Michael: Due to affirmative action, the majority of management positions are in non-white hands. The majority of whites have left SA because of the fact that they cannot get a job. So no, the economy is not in white hands. Kastro: This is a racist and one-sided article. That day was Freedom Day and this article is going on about racist protesters. All you guys commenting here don’t even know the half of it. White South Africans are ignorant of the plight of the black South African. Ignorance is bad for you white people. The ANC leads and the ANC is moving forward. Say what you want to say but I proudly say Viva ANC.” Ayanda: The organisers were Abantu base Mzantsi, a substruture of the ANC London Interim Branch. As members of the interim branch, we knew what was about to happen four days before the event, so the leadership was well-informed.Once again this is white supremacist propaganda to confuse the ignorant.White South Africans still have economic power in South Africa but still we find people writing such articles. Why? When are the lies going to stop? This was a successful event chaired by our beloved chairperson. Why start this nonsense? Manu: “Necessary internal processes shall be instituted in line
with our policies and procedures in dealing with this unfortunate situation to ensure it does not rear its ugly head again.” Please could you advise what policies and procedures are and what action will be taken upon this person? You claim to be Abantu base Mzantsi (The people of South Africa), as a “person of South Africa” I would like to know exactly what these are, so you will need to be transparent with this matter… or are you just playing it up and not really doing anything about it? Jabu: I echo Manu’s words. Please could you advise what these policies and procedures are? (You can clearly hear him say ‘Kill the Boer’ on the video, which is totally unacceptable under any circumstances). Asa member of this Interim Branch, I have never seen these policies mentioned or ever written. Secondly who is Abantu base Mzantsi, as its existence is only mentioned now. I think the Interim Branch is actually Abantu base Mzantsi, and was trying to make out that the Freedom Celebrations were not an ANC Interim Branch campaign, to ensure maximum turnout. Ruth Van Rensburg: Makes me angry. Can everybody stop hiding behind colour and just get on with it!

The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD
Are blacks really fools?
BLACKS are fools. This is not my opinion, by the way. It’s the opinion of Skwatta Kamp member Slikour, a rapper who released a song on the subject a few weeks ago (although he titled it ‘Blacks R Foolz’ – and I speak as a hip-hop fan when I say the ebonics made me cringe). It’s a good track, well-produced, and deals with a pretty touchy subject: namely that black people in South Africa are squandering their talent and their opportunities in search of quick money and status. “I must say black people are stagnant,” he raps. “BEE billions, we brag with it / while black schools are less than average / Then what’s up with that?” What indeed. It’s odd. I don’t really feel entitled to an opinion on whether blacks are fools or not. I’m not black. I think people in general are fools, and in particular certain social groups, but that’s got sod-all to do with skin colour. However, if Slikour feels differently, that’s his lookout. With an issue like this, and a title like that, Slikour all but demands that the listener has an opinion. He’s a damn good lyricist, and doesn’t shy away from tough situations. So it’s impossible to listen to the song and not feel something about the issue.
And as the reaction to the song has shown, everyone does. John Perlman invited Slikour (born Siyabonga Metane) onto his Kaya FM show, which was subsequently host to a number of passionate callers. The City Press newspaper gave him column space to further set out his argument. The Sunday World reported – wrongly, as it turns out – that the SABC had banned the song; cue bemused statements from both that organisation and Slikour that this was completely untrue, and a rare incidence of the SABC being harddone-by. I love hip-hop. I love it when it makes people angry, when it causes a reaction, when it sparks debate. Then again, I’m a columnist, so I’d love a toadstool if it made people angry. And at the risk of having the offices of my newspaper firebombed, I’m going to say that Slikour’s right – to a point. But not the point you’re thinking of. This is not about skin colour. This is about people struggling to come to terms with a country in which anything goes. We have buckets of opportunity in our country, so there are going to be serious teething problems. It’s these that Slikour is highlighting; what worries me is that if he’d titled the track anything else, it might not have gotten the reactions it did. One of the things that I’ve written about in the past has been how, despite having some of the best rappers on earth, we don’t specialise in hip-hop that deals with social commentary and political issues. Maybe this is the kick up the ass our artists – and our listeners – need. Slikour, you’ve sparked a light alright. Let’s hope it grows into a bonfire.

Mother City’s Merchants On Long pops up in Chelsea Proudly South African pop-up shop hits London for six weeks
by KAREN DE VILLIERS MERCHANTS on Long is nestling in London. A teaser, taster of sorts. For a mere six weeks one can head down to Bluebird Cafe on King’s Road to feast your eyes and feel your heart beat faster. If you have any African blood pumping in those veins, becoming homesick could be a possible side effect. If you don’t, before long you will feel the transfusion kicking in. So what is Merchants on Long? With pen ready with all the sorts of questions a journalist would ask, I met up with Hanneli Rupert, the creative genius behind Merchants on Long to find out just that. Two questions later and I had quite forgotten what to ask, so beguiling and enthusiastic was she to share her vision with me. I am trying to avoid such clichéd words as ‘divine’ and ‘passion’, but in this case, passion oozed from this divine, artistic entrepreneur who wants the whole world to know just how marvellous Africa is. What better way to demonstrate, she believes, than to gather some of the best artists and designers scattered all over Africa, nurture them under one big umbrella of the positive and become a united force in the luxury goods market, which will not only be a profitable experience for these artists, but a canvas for their work. Born in Cape Town, Merchants on Long takes its name from one of those magnificent buildings of the early colonial city. Some of them just hang in through decades of trial until someone finds the gem beneath the dust. Now lovingly restored by Hanneli, the façade gives a grand hint of the treasures inside. Treasures are the only way to describe them. Once you take in the splendour of the decor, you begin to see the vision that is Merchants on Long. African colours almost assault in their vibrant explosions on fabric, paper, leather and bone. Sculpture, twists of beads and tribal patterns create a dizzy mix of products for all tastes.
Merchants on Long’s pop up show will be in London until 16 June.
The luxury brand market is alive and well. Credit to the artistic soul who creates a product from dream to delivery – Merchants on Long are in the business of original, ethical, African style. The fact that materials are locally sourced is a statement of faith in the future. Hanneli has also started her own luxury handbag collection, Okapi, and I just have to get my hands on one of those! Even the name is intriguing. Named after an elusive animal found in the depths of central Africa; with part giraffe, zebra and deer traits – all mixed up and still unique. Just like all Africans. Delicious sounding word. So if you are fortunate enough to be in Cape Town, take a trip to Merchants on Long, have one of their great coffees and savour the energy of young Africans who, rather than listen to the doomsday sayers, are thriving on the beat of possibility. Hanneli plans a number of ‘pop-up’ shops around the world, just a little sample of what’s on offer in the Mother City, and then offer these products online. London is a
great place to start. Then it is off to Nigeria and other exotic places before she heads home, not because she has no choice, but because she cannot bear to be away. As I left, feeling slightly overwhelmed by the cocktail of youth, beautiful people and sheer luxury, pulling my coat close to face the drizzle of London, I knew I had a date with Merchants on Long. More importantly I left feeling immensely proud of the people who love Africa without fear, and teach the rest that ‘Darkest Africa’ is flooded with light. Merchants in London will be at Bluebird Cafe, 350 King’s Road, SW3 5UU until 16 June 2012. For more information, please contact Ola at In+Addition on +44 (0)2077364138.

Samuel het slegs ‘n oomblik daaroor nagedink en toe ‘n voorspelbare “I don’t know” as antwoord aangebied. “Come on Samuel” het ek hom probeer aanpor, “more or less?”

THREE INSIGHTS INTO: RECLAIMING MIS-SOLD PPI
by PAUL HARRISON IT is estimated that banks could end up repaying £6.4 billion in payment protection insurance payouts to millions of ‘forgotten victims’. Many people are still unaware that they may have been mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI). PPI is an insurance policy created to help you keep up with your loan or credit card repayments in case you find yourself unable to work due to accident, sickness or unemployment. Consumers who were mis-sold PPI have received £215 million in payouts so far this year, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) has revealed. Sellers of PPI have a responsibility to ensure that you understand the nature of the product, and that it’s appropriate for you. All policies will have exclusions, which you should have been informed about, as most policies are bought alongside a financial product rather than on its own. Paul Harrison spoke to Andrew Sellar, a consumer loophole specialist at Gback.co.uk, who helps consumers with all manners of debt problems and consumer
advice. Insight 1: Were you mis-sold PPI? Below are some common examples of reasons you could have been missold PPI. If you fit one or more of these you probably have a case to reclaim the money: • The person who sold it to you stated or led you to believe that taking out a policy was a precondition of applying for a loan • They stated or led you to believe that taking out a policy would improve your chances of a successful application for a loan • You were not offered a clear choice of the loan with and without insurance Insight 2: Check your policy Make sure that you’ve got the right paperwork for your needs. If you can’t find your agreement or T&Cs, contact your lender to ask for a copy (make sure the T&Cs date back to the time of your agreement as terms will change over time). You will see a monthly addition on your statements; if not or you have lost paperwork, you can ask the bank for these details. Lenders can ask for £1 to provide this but not all do, so you could include a £1 cheque (don’t send
Andrew Sellar, a consumer loophole specialist at Gback.co.uk
cash, though) to speed it up a little. It may not provide the agreement if your account is closed, but you can then ask for a full breakdown of your whole account (this can cost £10). Insight 3: Write to your lender Write to the company that sold the policy and ask for a refund. The most important thing is that you must’nt be put off if you’re rejected. You may also need to go to the Ombudsman later, but you will need to have written to the lender first.
Andrew Sellar advises an anonymous reader who may have been mis-sold PPI pointed out, you may have a case.
A South African based in London, who wanted to remain anonymous, feels that he has been missold PPI. Andrew Sellar answers his questions here: I’ve asked for the PPI back but the bank does not think it’s been mis-sold to me? Contact the Ombudsman and ask it to take on your case. You can either do this via the Financial Ombudsman Service website or by calling 0800 0234 567 (or 0300 123 9123 from a mobile). It will look at each case individually, so if yours is a matter of you saying one thing happened but the company disagrees, the Ombudsman will
decide if it thinks the company acted fairly.
I didn’t realise that I had cover. What can I do now? Some old agreements (pre-July 2007) may have used pre-ticked boxes so you had to opt out of the insurance rather than opt in, which is unfair. Always check this, and if you’re paying for insurance you didn’t know you had, then you can claim.
I am self-employed, does this make a difference? If you were self-employed, check whether you were eligible for a payout if your business went bust (usually not); if not, and it wasn’t

Black middle class is top attraction for British firms
New study reveals UK firms doing more business with SA than any othercountry in Africa by IRENE MADONGO AFRICA’S growing black middle class is now one of the top three attractions for British firms wanting to do business on the continent, a new study shows. In South Africa, where more than a third of people live below the poverty line, the black middle class is growing as more blacks overcome barriers from apartheid and join the consumer culture. About 10% of the black population (three to four million people), are considered middle class. Barclays recently conducted a survey of 250 British companies and asked what was the biggest opportunity for UK businesses in Africa. The firms said an expanding middle class ranked
third after the reputation of British goods and services, and also growing infrastructure. The survey, entitled Trade with Africa, also reveals that British firms are doing business with South Africa more than any other country on the continent. The findings explain: “South Africa is the top country for exporters, with 60% saying they currently export there. Nigeria is second with 37%, followed by Egypt at 35%. Ghana and Kenya are at 24% and 23% respectively.” South Africans appear to be receiving goods from the West well too. Recently, separate figures showed that imports from Europe to South Africa had increased by R1.2 billion to R21 billion.
Two thirds of the British firms in the Barclays survey also said that they will increase the amount they export to Africa. John Union, head of corporate banking for Barclays in Wales, said, “This is a ‘ground floor’ moment in many African economies, in which UK suppliers have the opportunity to build their brand in Africa at a time when a growing middle class is beginning to make long term brand decisions.” However, while the report was broadly positive, Africa is still viewed as having the least potential at present, with Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America all ranked above Africa by survey respondents. www.thesouthafrican.com/business

Durban Indaba 2012 “crucial” for tourism growth
by IRENE MADONGO KEY players in the tourism industry descended on Durban this weekend for the Indaba 2012 showcase, one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar. The four day event attracts more than 13,000 delegates from the travel tourism and related industries. Exhibitors included provincial authorities as well as international tour operators, game lodges and online travel. Hotels in Durban were packed for the event, which is expected to have an economic impact of more than R250m for the city. SA Tourism’s newly appointed CEO Thulani Nzima reportedly said,“Indaba is a crucial platform for sales and the forging of strong partnerships with all industry stakeholders to grow the tourism sector. “To be successful in the tourism industry requires the joint effort, hard work and cohesion of all partners to achieve continued tourism growth," he explained. The Indaba 2012 program included three speed-marketing sessions
focusing on sustainable and responsible tourism, heritage and cultural tourism and adventure tourism. Figures released show a growth in South Africa’s tourism sector, despite the global downturn. On Friday, the Industrial Development Corporation said indications on the ground point to an uptick in tourism-related activities and that the growth pattern was a good sign of possible job creation. Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk has said that his department aims to increase South Africa's foreign tourist arrivals from seven million in 2009 to 15 million by 2020, at the same time growing tourism's contribution to the economy from R189 billion to R499 billion and creating 225,000 new jobs. More than eight million tourists visited South Africa in 2011 – a 3.3% increase over the 2010 World Cup year that would, if footballspecific arrivals were not counted, have amounted to a 7.4% increase over 2010, well ahead of the global average of 4.4% annual growth.

Rand falls to three-week low
The Rand began trading last week Monday, 7 May 2012 around the 12.65 mark against its British counterpart and 10.24 to the Euro. The Rand closed significantly weaker against both major currencies on Friday, 11 May 2012 at 12.93 to the British Pound and 10.36 to the Euro. The South African Rand saw substantial losses against most major trading partners this week as investors re-evaluated their risk profiles. With more politically worrying news coming out of Europe, investors are pulling away from riskier investments and waiting for further news before going long in risky assets again. “Politically there’s still a lot of uncertainty in Europe. That is not instilling any confidence in the market. That’s pushing the Euro lower, and the Rand has jumped on the bandwagon; foreigners are very
risk averse at the moment,” said Ion de Vleeschauwer, head dealer at Bidvest Bank. This was further fueled by weak local job data that may suggest that the country may not be as fundamentally sound as we may have previously thought. The unemployment rate has now risen to a staggering 25.2% of the South African labour force. This is a 1.3% jump from the previous quarter’s data. Gill Marcus, the Central Reserve Bank Governor, stated that forex activity had been “fairly sizable” in line with their reserves accumulation program. GBP/ZAR: EUR/ZAR: USD/ZAR: AUD/ZAR:

Fund supermarkets and wraps unwrapped
by STAFF REPORTER ONE of the most significant changes to the investment landscape for the average investor in the past decade or so has been the fund supermarket and the wrap. These terms are used to describe
large ‘wholesalers’ of investment funds in the retail investment marketplace. In days of old if you wanted to purchase a Gold Fund from BlackRock Fund Managers and an equity fund from Newton Fund Managers your adviser would

have had to separately open an investment account with each fund manager. As a result BlackRock and Newton would have needed the administrative army required to manage thousands of direct to customer accounts along with all the onerous FSA regulation that goes with them. As such you would have to pay an initial fee on your investment of something like 3.5% to 4.5%, and 1.5% per annum to the fund manager to manage your investment. The fund supermarket and the wrap are two solutions to this problem. The largest fund supermarket in the UK is Skandia. By holding close to £35 billion in assets Skandia negotiates down the fund manager charges to allow investors to access the fund at 0% initial and between 0.2% and 0.8% per annum depending on the fund type. So a fund supermarket provides significant discounts but because of the scale it only deals with FSA regulated intermediaries like IFAs. This allows you to work with your adviser to select the best funds for your risk profile and requirements, and even after you’ve paid him/her for the advice you’re still getting the whole package cheaper than if you had gone direct to the fund manager. Fund supermarkets and wraps have a few differences. The wrap charges an annual fee (and sometimes an initial) to put your funds on the platform but then gives you the lion’s share of the commissions paid by the fund managers. The fund supermarket charges you almost nothing to be on the platform but keeps these fund manager rebates as its revenue. www.sable-group.com

Congratulations on your ZAA award. Why do you think you won? I don’t know. Every one of the nominees has achieved a great deal and I think we’ve all won something. Why did you choose to come to the UK? I thought I’d do my hotel management degree and go back to work in Zimbabwe or South Africa. I wanted to do more for my daughter and wanted international exposure. But the economy in Zimbabwe turned and it became more and more difficult to go back. I was visiting home and thinking “this is not what I left behind.” What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them? My biggest was finding work. Back home I was a sales and marketing manager, whereas here I was doing three jobs, studying and working every day. I had to
pay school fees, room and board as well as send money home for my daughter. I remember going to charity shops to buy clothes because it was so cold and going to bed without food. A friend and I used to work as receptionists on a night shift (11pm to 7am). Straight from there we’d go to university until 4pm. Then it was care work from 5.30 to 10pm and back to the reception at 11pm, with more care work on the weekends. If I had not gone through that, I would not have been the kind of manager I am today. It gave me the humility to respect people. Doing care work, the smell used to make me sick. I used to ask God “why?” Now I see it was to make me a better person. How did you rise from receptionist to president? I started as a night receptionist at the Mercury Hotel in Southwark. One day the general manager, Michael Lucas, called me and said he’d received a lot of recommendations from the guests. Michael discovered my background and wanted to mentor me as a business

development manager in sales. Six months later they created this job for me. I worked ten times harder. What are your goals as president of a hospitality company? We compete with big players who have been doing it for years. We want to be identified for our personalised service. I have worked for big companies and that sense of ‘family’ has not been there. That is what I want to instil. You have offices in the UK, US, India and China. Are you focusing on emerging markets? The European economy is quite unstable and we are keen to diversify. However before you do business anywhere, you have to respect those cultures. The first time I went to Beirut I was worried. But the people were great and received me well. You need to take time to read about cultures before you get there. Zimbabwe and South Africa are home to me and I am very keen to drive business there. South Africa is one of the fastest
emerging economies, especially after the World Cup, and is a big target for investors. What’s the big thing right now in your industry? Global Hospitality Services is now looking at mobile and mobile booking tools. The smart phone has changed the way things are done. Companies normally use GDS, the technology that connects hotels to agencies via computer. The industry wants to migrate this to a mobile platform. Which other ventures are you involved in? I founded iRock, which is about empowering ethnic minorities.

Black youngsters don’t see positive role models in the media and I thought ‘this is not right.’ I go to boardrooms and I’m struck by how few black people are there. I’m also hosting the Tribes of Africa event, a celebration of who we are as Africans. It is about diversity, a chance to celebrate something positive. Outside the office, it’s understood that you are keen on salsa? No comment! The ‘Tribes of Africa’ dinner and fashion show will be held on 26 May. For more info see www. irockuk.org

that is the internet. Travel, technology and South Africa are huge passions of mine so this venture is a good combination of all three. What is the most challenging thing about your job? The online world is a competitive place and many of the major players in our industry have been in business for a long time, so gaining market share takes time and patience. Having said that, offering fantastic service and an affordable value for money proposition is what we leverage to counteract these challenges. Future plans? To become the leading accommodation, travel and leisure website in our region in the next few years. We have a presence in London and Cape Town and hope to expand from these bases. Does being South African help you in your job? Knowledge of the SA tourism and business market is invaluable for anyone
wanting to do business in the country, be it from within South Africa or from abroad, so yes, I definitely believe it lends a strong advantage.

Family-friendly festivals We present the UK’s best festivals for South African families
by NICOLE HOLGATE SO, you love music, but your wellies are gathering dust, you can’t headbang like you used to, and it’s pretty impossible to drag a loaded buggy across a swamp of abandoned toilet roll and drug paraphernalia – what to do? Fret not. Festivals have expanded in multiple directions to cater for all ages and tastes, and yes, there are alternatives to camping. We present the UK’s best family friendly festivals for South Africans of 2012, and we’ve left out a few of the big ones in favour of some surprising gems: Wychwood Festival, 8 - 10 June, Cheltenham Racecourse Including a children’s literature festival, a mixture of rock and international music for all ages, and fantastic guest appearances from authors. Prices range from a full adult weekend camping ticket for a modest £115, to free admission for under fours. Highlight: The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre www.wychwoodfestival.com

Dr Charles Mazhude: Male Entrepreneur of the Year We interview a Zimbabwe Achievers Award winner
By MARY ISOKARIARI What is your career background? I did my basic medical training in Zimbabwe, where I worked for a few years before coming to UK to do some specialist training. Over the years, I have always been interested in making a contribution to the healthcare system in Zimbabwe. In 1997, I was instrumental in arranging a health care focus group at the Zimbabwe High Commission in London, which was attended by healthcare professionals from the UK and a delegation from the Zimbabwean Ministry of Health. We brainstormed several ways to support and enhance healthcare delivery in Zimbabwe. Over the years I have also tried to forge links between Kings College, where I teach, and the University of Zimbabwe. Most exciting and (challenging) parts of your job? The exciting and challenging aspects of the job are intertwined. What excites and drives me is being in a position where we are making a valuable contribution to Zimbabwe, which spurs us to continue. Knowing our work is making a difference makes us proud and the appreciation we get from Zimbabweans who have used and continue to use our services is exciting. One of the most challenging aspects has been setting up the services while living in the UK. It is never smooth sailing. A lot of work goes into learning how to deal with a variety of healthcare providers in Zimbabwe. The biggest challenge has been establishing a reputation that this is a company you can rely on to provide healthcare for your family. Which medical issues do you deal with? Our main product allows people easy access to medical insurance for dependants in Zimbabwe, for all types of healthcare when required. I specialise in HIV and deal with an array of medical issues, such as AIDS and malaria. Although we are not exclusively focused on HIV, AIDS or malaria we do a lot of work within these areas due to their prevalence in Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe, there seems to be a lack of

knowledge of how HIV is transmitted. Are you involved in the education side of it? In terms of prevention, we provide information on how to live healthier lives and treat those affected with HIV. How do you feel about winning Entrepreneur of the Year ? We were thrilled but at the same time humbled, as it shows we must be doing something right to get this kind of acknowledgment from our fellow Zimbabweans. We’re grateful to the people who voted for us and have used our services. This will definitely spur us to double our efforts in providing a great service to our customers. Do you think it’s essential to have more of these events to show Zimbabwe in a more positive light? We are blessed to have such a beautiful country that has produced a lot of talented people, which is sometimes forgotten about due to the kinds of information considered newsworthy. An event such as the Zim Achievers is crucial in shining the spotlight of what Zimbabweans are capable of. We have a collective responsibility to promote the image of Zimbabwe as a country with many opportunities and play a part in our own sustainable development. www.thesouthafrican.com/zimbabwe
WHILE browsing the internet for references to ethnic cleansing (as you do), I came across a video game called ‘Ethnic Cleansing’. I clicked on the link and guess what – only the advertising blurb remains. The rest has been banned. I bring you, courtesy of Resistance Records, all that remains on their website of ‘Ethnic Cleansing’: The most politically incorrect video game ever made. Run through the ghetto blasting away various blacks and spics in an attempt to gain entrance to the subway system, where the jews have hidden to avoid the carnage. Then, if you’re luck, you can blow away jews as they scream “Oy Vey!”, on your way to their command center. I might write to ResistanceRecords, and tell them that they could still sell their game in certain parts of the world where ethnic cleansing is considered politically correct – even desirable. All they would have to do is change their characters from Blacks, Spics and Jews, to Whites and Ndebeles and switch the scenes from subway systems to farms. The new blurb could look like this: The most politically desirable video game ever made. Run through a remote farmhouse blasting away various white grannies,
grandpas and children on your way to Matabeleland, where the Ndebele tribes have hidden in an attempt to avoid the carnage. Then, if you’re lucky, you can blow away unarmed tribesmen as they scream “Hauw!” on your way to the command centre. They might need to re-jig the plot a little. At present it goes like this: In the game, the protagonist (choose either a Skinhead or a Klansman) kills black people, Latinos and Jews. Finally he reaches the “Jewish Control Center”, where Ariel Sharon, former Prime Minister of Israel, is directing plans for world domination. The player must kill Sharon to win the game. The new plot could run along these lines: The protagonist (choose from Wovvit or Zanu PF member) kills white people, members of the MDC opposition party and Ndebeles. Finally he reaches Westminster where David Cameron is directing plans for the recolonisation of Zimbabwe. He must then kill Dave to win the game. Job done! While anti-Nazi leagues, pacifists, and anti-racists are gainfully employed lobbying on behalf of the traditional targets, Zimbabweans slip easily under the racism radar. Gamesters can knock themselves out hating and murdering people whose only defence seems to be their touching faith in God; the annoying anti-hate people are not looking. So who was responsible for getting the video game banned? It seems it was a group called The Anti-Defamation League. They lobbied the developers of the game tool to change their licensing conditions to prohibit the use of the engine to develop racist games. Wouldn’t it be virtually cool if we could get them to lobby the whole world to prohibit the use of everything used to develop reality racist games like Invade The Farm?

TEAM SA @ THE OLYMPICS Vote for the opening ceremony team outfit by STAFF REPORTER FOLLOWING the successful voting of Chukuru the rhino as Team South Africa’s mascot for the 2012 Olympics and Paralymic Games and beyond, South Africans have the opportunity to choose the official kit that the team will wear at the opening ceremony in London. Considering South Africa’s past opening ceremony fashion disasters, this looks like a positive move. South Africa’s Olympic governing body SASCOC sent out a tender for proposals to design the kit.
More than 20 fashion designers submitted entries and a judging panel met to trim the entries down to six designs by: Colleen Eitzen, Craig Native, Gert Johan, Gina@Work, JJ Schoeman and Leigh Schubert. The judges include Team SA ambassadors Lucas Radebe and Geraldine Pillay. The public will soon be able to vote on the YOU, Drum, Huisgenoot, SuperSport and SABC websites and the winning design will be announced on Monday 21 May. thesouthafrican.com/ sport

MIND THE RUCK ROB FLUDE
BrittleBokke: time for a change?
SPARE a thought for poor Paul Treu. The Springbok Sevens coach has been at the helm of his team for eight years, taking them to World Series glory in the 2008/09 season, having moulded a settled group over the preceding years. Since then however, things have done a nosedive, with the odd coming up for air with a tournament win or plate victory. However, on the balance of perspective, those glimmers of hope have proved to be just that: hope, and nothing more. The Bok team that partook in the concluding season tournaments was almost unrecognisable from that which had trawled the circuit for the last year or so, as simultaneous injuries had cut a swathe through the squad, with Varsity Cup youngsters plugging the gaps. Treu had been robbed at various points during the season of stalwarts such as Cecil Afrika, Kyle Brown, Mark Richards, Paul Delport and Boom Prinsloo. Afrika especially was a huge loss; last season he captured the World Sevens player of the year award with 40 tries and 385 points. The team also suffered from Delport’s absence; the sweeper has been a virtual mainstay since 2008. The team seemed to be developing nicely towards the back end of last season, sewing up the last two tournaments in London and Edinburgh, finishing a very credible second behind eventual (and perennial) champs New Zealand. A slow start to the 2011/12 season was then compounded by injuries and suddenly a youthful squad was effectively fed to the wolves and predictably, were eaten alive. Their best result was being pipped at the hooter by New Zealand at the Springboks’ home event in Port Elizabeth, a loss which would have dented morale more than we could have known at the time. And in recent tournaments, England winger (and former South African) Matt Turner twice broke free and scored the winning try after the final siren in play-off matches. Unfortunately, it became a regular feature in the Blitzbokke campaign, and surely the word “choker” was bandied

MIND THE RUCK: BRITTLEBOKKE
NEWS FOR GLOBAL SOUTH AFRICANS

www.thesouthafrican.com
BLITZBOKKE BATTERED South Africa disappoints at Marriot London Sevens
by WESLEY MCKAY THE South African Sevens rugby team lost three out of their five matches at this year’s IRB Marriott London Sevens tournament. The defending champions were unable to finish off the season on a positive note after a disappointing HSBC Sevens World Series that saw them go without a tournament victory all season - the first time in three seasons for Paul Treu’s side. Victories against minnows Scotland and Portugal in the opening group games were quickly erased from memory after narrowly missing out to Australia in the final group match. That meant the Blitzbokke had to face New Zealand in the Cup quarter final, with the New Zealanders knowing victory would confirm them as the the overall World Series champions. The All Blacks were ruthless against an injury-ravaged SA team, which saw them missing many of the more seasoned players. The Blitzbokke were unable to get on the scoreboard against the rampant Kiwis, whose task of claiming the series became less a case of if and more a case of when as they ran in six tries against their struggling opposition. The nail in the coffin for the Blitzbokke came when they were defeated by a post-siren try by England in the plate semi-final. South African-born Matt Turner scored under the posts after the Blitzbokke had led 17-12 when the klaxon signaled the end of the game. The highlight for the Blitzbokke this season was a Cup final appearance in Port Elizabeth against the All Blacks, where the South Africans again slipped up close to the final whistle.
The Blitzbokke went down 41-0 to Portugal on Saturday. Photo by Gary Baker.
Resounding defeats by Samoa and New Zealand in the last few weeks mean the team go home licking their wounds, knowing they have a lot to do if they are
to get anywhere near to the high standards of rugby played by the likes of Fiji, England and New Zealand. thesouthafrican.com/sport
