SA SHINES AT AFRICAN BUSINESS AWARDS South Africa walked off with some big prizes at last week’s bash in London

by STAFF REPORTER THE more than 350 guests at the fifth annual African Business Awards at Grosvenor House last Thursday included Africa's leading business figures, ministers, diplomats and government officials. Organised by African Business magazine and the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC), the ceremony recognised those who have driven Africa's rapidly transforming economy. A distinguished panel of judges selected winners from a pool of nominees from all over Africa, with SA taking a fifth of the awards - three out of 14. The Most Outstanding Woman of the Year was named as South Africa’s Rachel Zodwa Mabaso, founder and managing director of Mboweni Mineral Resources. She was unable to attend the ceremony so Regina Jere-Malanda, Editor of New African Woman, accepted the trophy on her behalf. The Award for Innovation went to Entrepreneurial Finance Lab, which was founded in South Africa and has developed an international operation that identifies highpotential entrepreneurs and performs credit scoring. South Africa’s Nedbank Group, represented by Mark Weston, won the Award for Environmental Sustainability in Africa. Sir Alan Collins, Director General of the CBC commented,

“By celebrating success, we aim to inspire others. We hope that such inspiration will lead to new business growth and new investment. It is encouraging that there are more and more examples of excellence in Africa, creating more opportunities that are ripe for investment.” The CBC was established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1997 to involve the private sector in the promotion of trade and investment. The CBC acts as a bridge for cooperation between business and government, concentrating on efforts to help remove barriers to trade, mobilise investment into Commonwealth countries, foster a good environment for business and investment, promote good practice in corporate governance and corporate citizenship, and facilitate the engagement of the private sector in information communication technology for development initiatives, especially in less developed countries. The African Business Awards are held as an integral part of the Africa Business Forum. This annual event enables business and government leaders to jointly assess progress in promoting growth and development in Africa, and take steps to meet emerging challenges. Egbert Imomoh, co-founder and Chairman of Afren, winner of Business Leader of the Year,

Budget London: Time travelling to Greenwich | p8

Historic Greenwich is a leafy gem often overlooked by the tourist hordes. Not only does it have one of the loveliest parks in London with a panoramic view across the city, it is packed with enough antiquity to keep history buffs intrigued (and there are llamas too).

emphasised that “Africa’s time has come to realise its full potential. Some of the most inspiring and transformational changes I see across Africa lie outside our traditional areas of

strength and offer perhaps the brightest prospects for the future. Companies are now judged , not by how fast they are growing , but by whether they are growing faster ...continued on page 3

We look at the business and tourism implications of South Africa’s national airline scrapping flights to Cape Town from London, as it announced last week. It intends to focus instead on routes to destinations such as Accra and Mumbai.

Palaeontologist Phillip Tobias dies at 86

WE WILL TAKE YOU HOME/ONS DOEN DIE GROOT TREK HUIS TOE...

The scientist who changed the face of genetics has died

by NICOLE HOLGATE LEADING South African palaentologist Phillip Tobias died on Thursday in Johannesburg, after a three-month battle against cancer. Tobias, who was nominated for a Nobel Prize three times, decided to study medicine at 15 after his sister, Val, who was 21, died of diabetes. “I decided I’d be the first one (to find out why) – and I was,” he said in an interview in 1996. Tobias enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Medical School in 1944. The GTA said he was a “leading South African academic and scientist who shared a lifelong passion for the study of man and human ancestry with his colleagues at Wits University and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site”. He started the current programme of excavation at Sterkfontein in 1966 which is now the longest continuously active palaeoanthropological dig anywhere in the world, and has produced over 1,000 hominid fossils. “In addition, tens of thousands of fossils of animals that lived contemporaneously with human ancestors have been excavated, processed, described, analysed and classified,” said the GTA. President Jacob Zuma said South Africa owed a debt of gratitude to Tobias for his successful efforts to have the remains of ‘Hottentot Venus’ Saartjie Bartmann returned to South Africa. Bartmann was paraded as an ethnological and sexual curiosity in Britain and Europe in the 19th centur. Tobias led negotiations with France on behalf of the South African Government. The remains of Bartmann, which were exhibited in Paris, finally returned home in May 2002.

A tongue-in-cheek campaign from Nando’s is supposed to encourage South Africans to question xenophobia – but has instead been banned.

On “SAA scraps London to Cape Town flights” Tracey R: Well, I’m sure some people will think this good (BA and Virgin Atlantic most notably) but I think it’s a great pity. I for one will not fly via JHB if there are alternatives such as BA or Virgin flying to Cape Town. Willem Bosman: Not surprised… the UK ‘green’ carbon tax is too high! Brian: Being cynical, I would not be surprised if this decision has been politically instigated. The Western Cape is the centre

of the whole of SA Tourism and is well governed by the DA. The hassle of changing aircraft at OR Tambo (possibly one of the worst airports in SA) and the additional time is, I am sure, going to have a big impact on travellers whether they be business people or tourists. Helen Zille must question this development urgently. J Seeliger: That is such sad news! A 12-hour flight is long enough without having to fly via Joburg. Sure other airlines like BA will see an increase in sales for direct flights to CT. Hope for their sake they made the right decision. Chris F: I really don’t understand this from a business perspective. All business travellers will now use BA – as will I. I have had direct flights with SAA booked

since March for Christmas and won’t be using them again. BA must be delighted! Izak: I just got the e-mail saying our flight for December has been rerouted. With a small child a direct flight is essential. When I originally chose the flights there weren’t much diffirence between SAA and BA but I chose to support SAA. Now the BA flights have gone up by a £1000! Well SAA, you have just lost my custom for all future flights and I am sure cost the SA economy many thousands in lost tourism. Just another reason why people are leaving South Africa, with such incompetence at the helm. Personally won’t mind if you go bankrupt! Chris Loxley-Ford: Overall, I don’t see this decision making much difference to the CT traveller, as the other airlines (Virgin, BA) will increase their UK-CT flights if unmet demand occurs due to this decision. But Virgin and BA direct return flights are £96 and £101 more expensive per person than the £809 SAA charges! BMI weighs in with £845, but shares flights with SAA, so this source might also disappear. Ismail: This came as a shock when I first read it. But I now understand the logistics behind this decision. The boom times are over in Europe and the rest of the third world. People are flying less than ever before on holidays. This has directly impacted us here in SA. I can envisage more flights to lesser

attractive cities than London in the near future… namely, Shanghai, Beijing, Zhengzhou, Qingdao, Hyderabaad, Kolkata, Sao Paulo, Moscow and many more up-andcoming countries. This is the way of the world and SA are adapting and responding to the needs of the majority. Live and let live. Peter: Makes Emirates look even better! Dubai sure beats Joburg as a stopover and the timing, halfway through the trip, is good!

On “Video: Nandos xenophobia ad banned in South Africa” Maerie Fae Brann: It’s important for people to question xenophobia! People from all around the world live in different countries. Many African people have settled in Europe legally and own land there and enjoy their lives there... Yolande de Klerk: I love that ad! Not offensive at all - quite thoughtprovoking, rather. Nando’s is known for pushing the boundaries (always tongue-in-cheek, of course!), and they haven’t disappointed. Paul Harrison: I got the impression that it was saying that the only indiginous people in SA were the Khoisan... Wouldnt that have some impact on things like land reform?

Jaqui Wilson: Oh its a bit of fun.. Good old Nandos! Deon Luyt: Good ad and very funny. They should keep on with their social commentary. It is who they are and I always look forward to their ads. It was not offensive unless you are guilty of something. Njabulo Madlala: I don’t find their ads funny or thoughtprovoking. Maybe I am really dumb but I seriously never know what thought they are trying to provoke.

On “‘Die Stem’ played as SA anthem at London hockey game” Frank Simmers: Why not play Die Stem, we Scottish people have to listen to the English anthem, God save the English Queen, instead of Flower of Scotland. Vusumuzi O Sibanda: (@Frank Simmers) Because we believe we are one. Simunye! Mfa: Proud South Africans from all walks of life will find this error unacceptable. Those who find it ok need serious therapy. I feel sorry for the players who are always the victims of such incidents. Join the debate on www.thesouthafrican.com

The OPTIMIST KAREN DE VILLIERS

Power to the people

LET them say what they want; I am very into the Queen right now. The Jubilee festivities have ignited a spirit in this country that we all need in massive doses. Whether you love the monarchy or not is not the issue, it is just wonderful to be part of something bigger than a conversation about the weather, the recession and the general slump of the economy. Standing alongside the riverbank to watch the flotilla was an experience to remember. The city swung to the rhythm of the red, white and blue – oldies, children and dogs were decked in flags and colourful outfits. We rose to the occasion. But more than the ceremony was the feeling of communal joy. Locals and tourists banded together and in my own little space (if space is the right word) we had a little United Nations party. A highlight was watching the South African flag floating past. My heart lurched, my eyes welled up. Patriotism is a powerful thing. We forget all too easily when news of crime and corruption filter through, when brother beats brother and sisters cry in anguish. We become suspicious and withdraw. And sometimes, we do not admit to our roots. Sometimes being a South African is difficult. Seeing our flag reminded me that on the same day, there was another special event taking place: The Comrades Marathon. Every year, on that twisty, battered road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, tired feet and bleeding souls find in each other a brotherhood that transcends class and culture. Running without politics, instead seeing small acts of kindness that show the true spirit of what it means to be proud of your country, of who

you are. I have seen runners who had travelled all night from other cities, with nothing more than their running shoes and, at the finish line, getting back on a bus to the townships. To farms and mines, to offices and homes. It did not matter, for those hours on the road, each runner became a somebody, a hero, and a person who belonged to a greater cause. Which got me thinking. Why do we have to wait for special occasions to show our true colours? The World Cup, Comrades, a Royal Wedding – suddenly we are patriotic, attending a street party, part of a collective ideal of celebrating the good in life. Should we not try to extend that feeling of brotherhood to our daily lives? There I was, celebrating a monarch who has managed to survive a world war and numerous prime ministers, and remains standing, ever so elegantly. Britain united. When they light the beacons across the country, history will rise from the furrowed land and we will be part of the magic. The Olympic torch carries the dream to London. And in the wave of oneness, on the edge of the Thames, my little bit of magic came by. My flag, my country was there, in the heart of the world. As it should be. “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him” – Abraham Lincoln.

Prime Circle: “Feels like we’re just getting started”

SA band Prime Circle, who headline Homelanz fest this weekend, say they are ‘proudly South African with international aspirations’ by ZANE HENRY CHANCES are that if you’re lover of South African rock, at some point you will have found yourself caught in a throng of full-throated fans singling along lustily to a Prime Circle song. Anthems like ‘Hello’, ‘Live This Life’ and ‘My Inspiration’ lend themselves to fervent, mass devotion from the faithful multitudes. UK fans will be able to reexperience the thrill when the band headlines Homelanz, the one-day southern hemisphere festival at Boston Manor Park on 16 June. “I don’t really see a difference between how South Africans react to the shows at home versus the overseas shows,” lead singer Ross Learmonth says. “Everyone who is into live music and going to festivals generally get into it and enjoy themselves all the same. The only difference is I would say in Europe people are exposed to a lot more than in SA, but don’t think that it changes the reaction.” The event features a superb lineup of South African, Australian and New Zealand acts, including Munkinpure, I Am Giant, Jayson Norris, Melic, Bowie Jane, Dave Gander, Glenn Aitken, Anna Coddington, Rietta, J.T. Mills Xperience and Silent Disco. Of course, putting South Africans, Australians and New Zealanders together will probably require the signage of a treaty banning all talk of sport. In the interest of international peace, you know. “Nah, nothing wrong with a bit of banter,” Learmonth smiles. Anyone keen to catch up with him for a pint and a discussion of the weekend’s matches can find at him at his favourite pub in London. “I love The Walkabout in Shepherds Bush. Always a good vibe there. Pull in.” Homelanz revellers can look forward to Prime Circle’s brand

of anthemic, melodic rock, most recently captured in their latest album Jekyll & Hyde. Their sound and relentless touring has garnered the boys significant international success. “I think we are still in the early stages of our international career,” Learmouth says. “We have been fortunate to tour with some amazing international bands which has helped us reach a lot of people. We continue to write and tour and will see where this takes us. I don’t think there is much tension between being a proudly South African band and having strong international aspirations. “If you do well in other territories that shouldn’t change anything. It should hopefully make your country more proud of you. There is a lot of great talent in SA and I would love the rest of the world to hear it as well.

It feels like we are just getting started. We all love playing and writing music together. And look forward to what the future will bring.” Homelanz runs at Boston Manor Park on 16 June from 10.30am. Budget London: Time travelling to Greenwich Historic Greenwich is a leafy gem often overlooked by the tourist hordes jamming up the West End

by COLIN MACRAE EXPENSIVE as London may be, as summer approaches, there are some wonderful days out you can enjoy in the city on a budget. Even cheaper if you are fit, as the nation’s capital is becoming more and more cycle friendly. For the less active though all you really need is the price of an off-peak travel card. Historic Greenwich is a leafy gem often overlooked by the tourist hordes jamming up the West End. Not only does it have one of the loveliest parks in London with a hillside panoramic view across the city, it is packed with enough antiquity to keep even the most ardent history buff intrigued. The mostly free Maritime Museum, the world’s largest, illuminates London’s illustrious seafaring past as the keystone to the Empire. From battles to mutinies and from conquest to piracy, you are taken on to journey through how this tiny island at one stage managed to turn 25% of the world’s map pink. You can even re-enact you own private swashbuckling fantasies on the very lawns they shot much of the last Pirates of the Caribbean and if you need any more scene setting just across the way, docked riverside, is the soon to be reopened Cutty Sark. For the less adventurous you can walk up the hill and witness where time began. Modern time that is. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the standard which by all time zones were measured, was originally

situated at the Royal Observatory. Though now no longer needed, the original time ball on top of Farmstead House, installed in the 19th century, still drops daily to mark the exact moment of 1pm GMT, 2pm in BST, much to the delight of the assembled throng. Though the main reason most people traipse up the hill is to stand on the Prime Meridian and quite literally straddle the world at 0° Longitude. A little tip here is that if you feel a little scammed by the £10 charge to stand on a line, there is a little gate just before the observatory, with a plaque on the very same line, so you can get your photo opp for free. After a lunch on the lawn, it is just a short trip to the free Woolwich ferry that offers great views of the Thames Barrier and Canary Wharf in the distance. Make sure you get on the left side, there is one every 10 minutes so waiting if it is full is not a problem. Then take a meandering trip through the Docklands west, if you’re Oystering nothing beats the thrill of riding up front in the driverless DLR, to witness a working port city in action. If you’re interested in design then stopping at the Thames Barrier Park for a close-up of the worldrenowned structures is another great photo opportunity. Eventually you will wend your way to Mudchute farm, a community owned and run urban farm, the largest inner city farm in Europe, which truly is a breath of fresh air. If manure is your

thing, the farm has cows, llamas, sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, peacocks, budgies, chickens, geese, ducks, horses and even a python. Animal encounters, horse riding and acres of parkland all in the shadow of some off the tallest buildings in the UK; it has definitely got to be one of the most surreal places in London. After all that fresh air you certainly owe yourself a drink. You can either choose to move on up to Canary Wharf for an expensive cocktail amid the towering skyscrapers and imagine the future. Or alternatively head back to Greenwich through the creepy pedestrian foot tunnel to enjoy a relaxing pint under the shadow of the Cutty Sark and contemplate the past.

Gun my daarom die geleentheid om as ‘n Frans-Duits-Nederlandse Suid-Afrikaner, met my Britse paspoort in die hand, my hoed met die ander hand te lig en te sê: Congratulations Ma’am, thou truly art an inspiration to thee. by PAUL HARRISON PROPERTY sourcing is a great way to find below market value property deals to invest in. However, as with any industry, there are a variety of different deals and agents you can find and it’s very important to be able to get the best deal for your time and the money invested. Paul Harrison spoke to property expert Gary Shaw to get his best insights into what you need to be aware of if you are looking at using a property sourcing agent to invest in property. Insight 1: Never do business with complete strangers. Always meet the sourcing agent first. Make sure you agree on what constitutes a deal.

If anonymous emails and texts offering deals arrive, just press ‘delete’. Insight 2: Always do your due dilligence. Regardless of how good the deals look, you need to double check the agent’s figures and do deeper research into the property in question. A lot of people will get excited by the great potential returns and not undertake this step of deeper assessment of the investment. This can be a critical error. Insight 3: Ensure that the agent has secured the deal. However the agent has found it, whether from an estate agent or directly from the vendor, make sure that no one else can

offer on it. If this is not done, it may lead to complications further down the road.

Gary Shaw advises Grant Massam on property sourcing as an investment networking events in and around London. They are always a great place to start. Or recommendations from investors whose opinions you trust. The elements of ‘know, like and trust’ are as important in this situation as with any other business or investment.

Grant Massam is a London-based South African who is interested in property investing and the different ways one can get involved. He has been to a few property networking events and met a few agents who source and as a result would like to understand more about property sourcing as an option.

Why would the agents offer this service and not just take all the deals for themselves? They could be in the situation where they’re getting too many deals to

Grant Massam do personally, as you are limited by how many mortgage applications you can make a month. Or the reason that makes the most sense to me; if they pass on some of the deals then the fees that they earn from these make their own deals free. Where is the best place to find someone with integrity who is offering sourcing deals? There are plenty of property

I’ve heard mention of sourcing companies offering ‘Research Days’. What does that mean? This is where the agents will take investors on a tour around the town where they offer deals, showing what works, where and why. This is a great introduction to an area and you can also ascertain whether they really know their stuff or not. There will usually be a charge for this. Expats could help drive recovery of upper-end homes market by RONALD ENNIK Returning South African expatriates, particularly those who have been living in the UK, could be a key pillar in the recovery of the market for higher-

priced homes says Ronald Ennik, CEO of Ennik Estates. The company is the exclusive affiliate in Gauteng of Christie’s International Real Estate – the global luxury property

arm of the world’s largest and oldest fine art auction house. “In the wake of the euro zone debt crisis, and the employment and other uncertainty it has created, living and working abroad has lost its lustre for many expats,” says Ennik “This is clearly mirrored in the uptick in buy enquiries we are receiving from South Africans wishing to come back home,” he adds. While no statistics are officially available, Homecoming Revolution, a Johannesburg-based non-profit organisation that encourages and assists expats to return, says it is receiving 120 enquiries a month from South Africans living abroad who wish to come home. “One of our partners, who specialises in car imports to South Africa, has noted a 30 percent increase since August 2010 in the number of South Africans wanting to ship their vehicles back to South Africa,” says Brigitte Britten-Kelly, managing executive of Homecoming Revolution. Most of the returnees, she says, are leaving the UK, where they have lived

for the past 10 years or more, and are now finding the economy a strain. Many are also coming home from Australia and Dubai. “They are generally aged between 30 and 40, with young families, and are looking for a better standard of living for their children,” Britten-Kelly adds. “Luxury homes in South Africa are well priced right now from a foreign investment perspective,” says Ennik. “Given that returning expats are bringing hard foreign currency into a favourable exchange rate climate, they are generally spoilt for choice in an upper home price band that offers them high value and potential return for the Pounds, Euros and Dollars they invest in their new homes here”. “Among the biggest factors driving their return to South Africa is the explosive economic growth that is taking place in sub-Saharan Africa, with South Africa not only its gateway but also the region’s leading investment destination,” Ennik concludes. BAROMETER

FNB May House Price Index rose by 9% by DENISE MHLANGA The FNB May House Price Index rose year-on-year (y/y) by 9 percent from 8.5 percent revised growth rate in April, according to the FNB Property Barometer report for May 2012. In real terms, the FNB House Price index rose by 2.3 percent y/y in April, says John Loos, FNB Home Loans property strategist.

2

www.sapropertymonthly.co.uk

Writing in the report, Loos notes that real house prices in April 2012 were still -12.8 percent lower than the peak reached in February 2008, but 69.9 percent higher than in July 2000. He explains that the index is starting to lose growth momentum, pointing out that the month-on-month seasonally adjusted house price growth slowed to 0.96 percent for the fourth consecutive month of slowing from 1.4 percent in January. Loos notes that for the time being, interest rates remain unchanged since late-2010, implying no new stimulus, while the global and local economy appears to be slowing. “This points to a near term period of slowing house price growth, and although we can’t yet observe this in the y/y inflation rate of the FNB House Price Index, it has already been observed in the month-on-month price growth rate.” While house price growth on a y/y basis accelerated further to 9 percent in May, a loss of month-on-month price growth momentum over the past four months suggests that the y/y growth peak in the FNB House Price Index is not far off, adds Loos. - Property24.com

Why Warren Buffet loves rental homes by STAFF REPORTER Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the world’s top investment brains, has said that private investors should now be buying up as many single family homes to rent out as they can afford. According to Jan Davel, managing director of RealNet, Buffet has given several good reasons for this unequivocal advice which they believe is just as relevant in the South African property market now as in the US and other property markets around the world. In an interview on CNBC television and again in the International Business Times, Buffett said that both equities and single family homes were attractive investments at the moment in terms of price. He said that if they could be purchased at low rates and held for a long time, the houses would be a better investment. Indeed, he said, he would buy up “a couple of hundred thousand” homes right now if he could only find a practical way to manage them. Asked what he would say to young investors trying to decide between equities and property, he immediately replied that they should buy a couple of single family homes at distressed prices and find renters, notes Davel. One reason for this was that as long as the management of such individual properties remained a logistical nightmare for big corporations, they would be drawn more to commercial properties and apartment complexes, leaving the single

family homes field wide open for private investors to acquire good assets very cheaply, according to Davel. He explains that such homes are not only available at low prices, says Davel, but more affordable at the moment thanks to the fact that mortgage interest rates are at historic lows. “This reduces the minimum monthly repayment and makes it more likely that it will be covered by the rent that tenants are paying.” Although home loans are harder to come by, it is still possible in most cases to gear a large percentage of the purchase price – which is not something one can do when buying equities, he says. As it is, the number of buyto-let purchases is already starting to rise, although not as fast in South Africa as in other parts of the world. In South Africa, the FNB Estate Agent Survey for the first quarter of 2012 found that buy-to-let purchasing had risen to account for 9 percent of all purchases, up from 8 percent in the previous four quarters and from a 7 percent low point late in 2010. However, in March the US National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported that investment purchases made up 27 percent of all new and existing home sales in the US during 2011 and NAR economist Lawrence Yun said investors were “swooping in” to take advantage of low home prices. He also noted that while optimism for the recovery of the market was part of the picture, a very big factor in the increased investor activity

was the fact that rising rental incomes were easily expected to beat the returns one could get on cash “just sitting in the bank”. “It must be said that this

is increasingly also the case in SA,” especially in areas where rental homes are in short supply and there is high demand due to expanded mining activity or

infrastructure development.” He adds that they believe it will shortly give significant additional impetus to the buyto-let market. - Property24.com

“Simply merging households and calling it eclectic doesn’t work”

Decorating tips for young couples by KATLEGO SEKANO It’s a classic dilemma - but instead of fighting each other on what to put where, there are ways to keep each other happy by discussing your different tastes, looking at what will work in your new apartment and how best to turn dreary walls into a warm home. Simply merging households and calling it eclectic doesn’t work. You can’t have your grandmother’s antique vase, that blue suede couch you bought on impulse and those faded curtains that your partner’s had since he started university all working in the same space. What you need is a plan. Make the decisions together and have them in writing to avoid arguments. Don’t land up in couple’s therapy because of endless arguments over interior decorating. Rather learn how to blend design styles... and here’s how: Make an inventory of things Use the opportunity to start afresh and create something special without starting from scratch. Make a note of what you

6

have, what needs to go and what you still need. As a couple weed out old, unwanted furniture and take the time to discuss big purchases and any changes that you might want to make. The 80/20 rule The 80/20 rule always works, provided that 80 percent of your décor is tied together by similar trends and ideas. You can use the other 20 percent to deviate from this, meaning you can add your grandmother’s vase to the ultramodern mix. Find inspiration Set aside time to look through interior design magazines and visit design blogs together. Share your ideas and opinions, and focus on practical items that will add comfort and style to your new home. Even if one of you has no design sense at all, try to find some common ground and for those times when you can’t even agree to disagree, create individual zones. Let him have his man cave while you create your own retreat, but do decide on one final look for the home.

Go shopping together Make shopping for furniture and art pieces fun and exciting. Remember that this is a joint effort so consult each other before making separate purchases. Be open-minded and don’t say no before you’ve heard what your partner has to say. Negotiate Relationships are about compromise, and decorating is no different. Decorating together is not an all or nothing situation. So let your partner have the flat screen TV in exchange for your choice of furniture. Avoid being emotional about it but do consider your partner’s feelings. If that lava lamp you’ve been dying to get creates tension, let it go and re-negotiate for something else. Give it a personal touch Modelling your living space after high-end TV homes is all fine and well but does the space say anything about your relationship? Adding personal touches throughout your home will remind you of the journey

www.sapropertymonthly.co.uk

you’ve taken together. So hang up those crazy pictures you took five years ago. Create a feature wall showcasing all your favourite places and the wonderful people in your lives. Add décor that says ‘this is who we are and this is who I am’ without missing the stylish mark. Interior decorating doesn’t

have to turn into a war. Forcing your personal style onto your partner is not only unfair but it will also cause tension between the two of you. Remember that coordinating your décor tastes to create a warm, loving home is far more important than getting your way. - Property24.com

<< ASK THE EXPERT

Investing in upmarket locations in the Western Cape I

am a 27-year-old living in the UK and would like to invest in a property in Cape Town. I can afford to buy in an upmarket area, but was wondering if it’s more practical to invest in an area that is still going to pick up. Do upmarket areas generally increase much in value or would it be a better investment to pay less for an up-and-coming area?

Marius Pieters, Seeff Hermanus

W

e are very fortunate to live in the picturesque coastal town of Hermanus which is a mere 125km from Cape Town. Hermanus is highly recommended as one of the Cape’s top holiday destinations and is known for its annual whale season. Hermanus has always been a popular area to invest in and although there has been a drop in values since the 2008 downturn we have

recently seen a levelling out of prices as our property values hold very well. Hermanus also offers you the best of both worlds from ‘upmarket’ seafront properties, apartments and popular golf estate dwellings to ‘up-and-coming’ neighborhoods such as Sandbaai, Onrus and Vermont. An ‘upmarket’ apartment is a strong recommendation as there is no room for further expansion for developing within our town borders. The amount of seafront land is limited so the number of upmarket seafront apartments is very limited, with prices ranging between R4 million and R12 million. With a reasonable rental income your property should be able to sustain its costs, allow for you to enjoy a holiday of your own and over a period of five years it should bring you a good investment return. The popular Fernkloof Golf Estate offers various opportunities with vacant land from R700 000 to develop your dream home or rather invest in a new home from R3,3 million to more upmarket dwellings around the

R6 million mark. Our up-and-coming areas offer great opportunities with Sandbaai from R700 000 to R4 million seafront; Onrus Vermont from R1 million to R6 million seafront.

live 6 months in the UK and 6 months in SA each year. In the UK I rent my friend’s spare room, while in SA I stay at our home which we rent out the remaining six months of the year. Due to financial reasons we might have to sell our SA home. What is the likelihood of finding a flat in SA that I could rent for only six months each year? Would it be wiser to rent it for a year and sub-let while I am away or are there better options?

are not in SA, but in your current circumstances I think the very best alternative would be to identify a good complex of furnished apartments and make arrangements to rent one of these for six months every year. Letting the space for the remainder of the year would then be the responsibility of the owners.

SAA ditches London-Cape Town flights For Ghana, India South Africa’s national airline is to focus on growing routes to destinations such as Accra and Mumbai, amid an outcry over its decision to scrap flights to Cape Town from London

by IRENE MADONGO ON Tuesday SAA announced that it would be ending its LondonCape Town route, which has been operating for 20 years, citing a fall in the demand for flights as well as increased competition from other airlines operating between London and Cape Town. From 16 August, passengers flying from the Mother City will be re-routed via Johannesburg. South African Airways (SAA) offers up to 38 flights daily between Cape Town and Johannesburg. SAA said that over the last three years, the market between the UK and South Africa for all carriers has shrunk by 24% due to factors such as the introduction of a £52 visa fee for South Africans

travelling to the UK. The announcement to abandon the London-Cape Town operation has been met with an outcry from various industry players. Cape Town Tourism said it was “disappointing” for the tourism industry, while another industry player said the announcement was a “shock and huge blow.” Nils Flaatten, CEO of Cape Town-based Wesgro, the official marketing and trade promotion agency for the Western Cape, said it could mean the loss of many travellers from the United States who use London as a connecting flight into Cape Town. “Our research has indicated that the London-Cape Town route still holds strong economic

value for the Western Cape and neighbouring Eastern Cape. International airlines identified this and are increasing their capacity during peak season. Many business and leisure travelers from the United States are using London as a connecting flight into Cape Town and we are at risk of losing these visitors, as the traveling time has been extended even further,” he explained. However SAA said its decision was in line with its long-term growth strategy which would see aircraft redeployed to better serve its growing Accra, Mumbai and Perth routes, and to add Abidjan to the network. The decision came about due to an increase in trade between

Ghana and South Africa, SAA said. Gary Kershaw, SAA country manager UK and Ireland, said, “Our growth strategy is to grow our Johannesburg hub for connections into Africa.” He added: “We need to grow. We are playing a bit of catch-up against the likes of Egypt Air and Ethiopian Airways.” “West Africa is an emerging economy. They have a lot of resources in terms of oil, gas

and mining. It is one area of the globe that will expand faster than others.” Theunis Potgieter, SAA’s general manager commercial, explained, “For our UK passengers, flying via our Johannesburg hub means having direct and easy access to our extensive and growing domestic and regional network. Strengthening the hub helps us to fulfil our promise to take Africa to the world and to bring the world to Africa.”

SAA and its London-Cape Town route • SAA launched its direct service between Cape Town and London in 1992 as South Africa emerged from a long period of isolation and at the dawn of a massive growth in tourism • SAA currently has two daily services between London Heathrow and Johannesburg and is set to increase its capacity on these flights by 13% • In June 2012 it announced it would be ending the London to Cape Town route, citing various reasons including a fall in the demand for flights as well as increased competition from other airlines operating between London and Cape Town • Demand for flights by most carriers between London and Cape Town, as well as the USA via London, shrank between 2007 and 2011 from 650,000 to 560,000 passengers, according to SAA • SAA is a leading carrier in Africa, serving 26 destinations across the continent • Its route to Accra was launched in 2005. The Mumbai and Perth routes, which were launched in 2011 and 1992 respectively, are also considered important to the airline

SAA will end its 20 years of service between London and Cape Town on 16 August due to a fall in demand.

Mamba Mentors put SA entrepreneurs through their paces A group of South African business people travelled to the UK last week to present their businesses to the Mamba Mentors

by NICOLE HOLGATE SICK of the hatchet-faced millionaires of Dragon’s Den? Try facing one of our Mamba Mentors instead. The Mentors are Haji Chana, Founder and Chairman at Adenue and Managing Partner at HcCapital; James Durant, Owner and Director of Blue Sky Publishing and Bluegrass Digital Limited; Reg Bamford, Founder and CEO of Sable Group; and Adam Laird, Co-owner and Director of Homeflow Ltd and Director at Blue Sky Publishing. Last week they viewed a series of 10 to 15 minute presentations from South African entrepreneurs. The companies are chosen from the UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) UK-SA Entrepreneurs Programme, Silicon Cape’s incubation programme and locally in the UK. They submit their business proposal, and once they’re past the basic checks – and really do have a brilliant business idea – they get to go face-to-face with the Mentors.

A group of businessmen and women travelled to the UK for a week to present their businesses, which they all believe have the potential for international collaboration. Among them are Jane Austin and Samantha Durkin, who created a programme called Switch2Health. This aims to combat obesity by offering schools, individuals and corporates ‘real rewards to beat obesity’. Other businesses talking to the Mambas: • Local Laaitie, a children’s fashion line with a South African twist. Important information for PPS policyholders If you have a PPS Sickness and Permanent Incapacity Benefit or PPS Professional Disability Provider policy and are currently living and working in the UK, you should check whether your policy benefits are still sufficient for your needs. In some cases, higher UK earnings for graduate professionals and the effects of currency fluctuations mean that PPS members could need to purchase more units to maintain their level of cover. However, records show that many members simply maintain their contributions at South African levels. In the event that you should need to draw on your policy, that could mean you will find that your cover does not provide the level of benefit you need.e RSM Tenon has been appointed by PPS to develop it’s UK services for members. Rand recovers slightly after annual lows THE South African Rand traded between 8.31 and 8.58 to the US Dollar between 4 and 8 June 2012. The Rand also traded between 12.89 and 13.06 to the British Pound during the same period. After hitting close to three-year lows against major currencies the Rand, by Wednesday, had its third day in a row of gains, primarily caused by stronger commodity prices. Another cause of this reversal is the "pull-back", a natural correcting method of oversold currencies. Although the Rand kept strengthening towards the end

of the week, investors were still cautious, as no concrete plan has been formulated and implemented in the Euro-zone to deal with the debt problem. The Rand did weaken at the end of the week though. This was mainly due to two factors: 1) China cutting its interest rate, seen as a premeditated strategy before releasing weak growth data in their local economy. 2) Ben Bernanke’s, from the Federal Reserve Bank, comments on stimulus measures. Both these factors affected emerging markets (like South Africa) negatively. News coming out of the markets

during early trade on Monday was that there is a sense of relief after the Spanish banking sector had successfully secured a €100bn rescue package. "Sentiment is in a risk-on mode and the news is giving the market a sense of relief," Kengo Suzuki, currency strategist at Mizuho Securities said.

Where did you develop your love for food? I have always loved eating food, however I fell into cheffing as a career. I took a gap year to London after school; work was scarce, so I ended up working for a family friend in Clapham, preparing vegetables and washing up. I really enjoyed it, so decided to study cookery at Silwood in Cape Town. Even though my father owned a restaurant and my mother a bakery, going into the food industry hadn't been an option before. Cheffing wasn’t really considered a valued profession. Over here, it's different, there’s a real love of food and long hours are put in to create something really beautiful. You moved from Londolozi Game Lodge to London, why? Working at Londolozi was an amazing experience (with de rigueur men in khaki etc). I was meant to stay for three months but ended up working longer. The lifestyle was fantastic and we were

cooking some really good food. However I missed London and big city life. What did you find most challenging about moving to London? I initially struggled to find work but eventually I got the job at Boxwood Cafe and went straight into long hours and little social life, so had no time for culture shock. I did find that the pace was completely different, people moved much faster and it felt like they were always ahead of you. Your career trajectory reads like perfection on paper. Was this planned? As well as hard work, I do feel like a lot of my career has been down to luck and being in the right place at the right time. It was an old colleague from Mount Nelson who told me that Gordon Ramsay was interviewing for Boxwood and that I should submit my CV. To be honest, on the day I was feeling under the weather, but decided to drop my CV off anyway. I ended up working under Gordon for eight years and it was he really who enabled me to move from restaurants to private dining.

He would be invited to parties and asked to supply a chef; often Mark Sargeant, who would bring me with him. It so happened that some of these celebrities requested me for periods of time, usually for holidays. This is how I started working for the Beckhams and Lily Allen. When I started on my own I was able to continue with them. What was it like working with Gordon Ramsay? Did you ever have a row with him? I learnt so much from him as he really knows his stuff. He would show you something once, if you didn’t get it, he’d show you again and if you didn’t get it that time, you’d be out. It was a good lesson as you were always striving to be the top of your game. As for 'rows', you don't really argue back with Gordon but I was certainly shouted at a lot. It was eight years of being under constant pressure and nerve-racking intensity, but I loved it. Many chefs on TV seem to have fiery personalities; is that because of being under critical scrutiny and pressure? Of course it is partly down to that, but I think the fieriness you witness is born from a real passion for food. If you are passionate about your subject then you are excited about it and want perfection in everything. This industry typically isn’t well-paid, so it's done by people who love it. You’ve worked behind the scenes on many TV series; do you want to be in front of the camera? Yes, I am sure I will; I really enjoy talking about food and cooking. I wouldn’t want to do a competition like Masterchef or anything like that; it doesn’t look like much fun. I’d rather have my own one.

Njabulo Madlala

John Paul de Freitas

Would you consider doing something like that in South Africa? Yes, absolutely. Over the last couple of years, the SA food scene seems to have been maturing. Margot Janse's restaurant, Le Quartier Français for instance was recently voted 31st best in the world. I ate recently at Test Kitchen in Woodstock and had possibly the best meal I’ve ever eaten. It is English run I believe but showcasing the best of South African cuisine. I think they are matching the professionalism of the kitchens here, but without mimicking the food, as in the

past. We’re reclaiming our cuisine and focusing on local, seasonal produce. What’s your ambition? What is next for Angie Steele? A small empire with my own brand would be amazing. I like the idea of having different elements under one umbrella. So I have ambitions within the media but I’d also like to produce cookery books and start a cookery school.

THE GRAFT IS GREENER

Lindsay Kingston

Co-owner of Fun Tees For Kids

by PAUL HARRISON Born: In Hertfordshire, my family moved to SA when I was 10, so I count myself as South African. How long in UK: Since October 2011 Job: Co-owner of Fun Tees For Kids Background: 15 years as a recruitment generalist in SA. Prior to that sales and key account and office management. Motto: “Life’s not about waiting for the storms to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” - Vivian Greene

What do you do in your job? We have recently started Fun Tees For Kids. I am involved with all aspects of the company at this point as it is a start-up business. I create all designs for t-shirts, source product, research and liaise with suppliers, get involved with the social media, and attend trade shows and networking groups. How did your current job come about? I was looking for a job, and not finding anything suitable did a bit of temp work and was almost the winner in the race for a recruitment position. I was out there networking and meeting people, which is how I came to be serving teas at a local ‘spiritual fayre’ one Saturday morning in February. Two women walked past and commented on how “divine” the carrot cake looked. Only a South African would use that terminology. It turned out one of them was South African. We had coffee together, and discussed the opportunity of me writing some blogs for her social media

One of the most amazing emporia the capital offers to the carnivorous gourmet. St. Marcus Fine Foods Ltd, the first to bulk produce Biltong & Boerewors in the UK. For the past 30 years we have been producing the most amazing range of Biltong and Boerewors with a huge and imaginative choice of gourmet sausages and other fine specialty meat products. along side our enormous range of imported fine South African produce, Did you Know St Marcus Is: The oldest establishment in the UK for the manufacture and import of SA foods St Marcus have been awarded a gold medal for Our Beef biltong. St Marcus Holds the most awards and diplomas for our Boerewors, biltong &Burgers in the UK In the South African taste awards out of 5 categories St. Marcus came away with 3!! company… and so it began. After a few blog posts and many hours walking the dog together, I mentioned my idea of setting up a colour-in t-shirt company. We discussed the idea over more coffee and walks through the fields, put plans into action, and Fun Tees For Kids was born. What is the most exciting thing about your job? I enjoy starting up businesses and the challenges involved. I love watching them grow and evolve (it’s almost like having kids!). I love learning new things, which is just as well, as the way to market and sell has changed so much over the past few years. The most exciting thing that happened in the past week was receiving a picture of a little boy wearing one of our t-shirts that he had coloured in, together with a thank-you letter telling us how much he loved it! What is the most challenging thing about your job? Creating awareness is challenging and getting sales rolling is challenging. Although I suppose the fact that I want it to happen right here right now does put added pressure on me! I find it tough not having a business network here in the UK, as in Johannesburg I always knew somebody who knew somebody, so if I needed anything doing I knew where to turn. So it’s a lot of research, trial and hopefully not too much error. Future plans? Future plans will be to grow the product range in the short term to include bags, aprons, tea towels and such like. We’ll head towards bigger items in good time. We also have plans to get involved with and create and affiliate marketing site.

Swissful thinking: gorgeous Geneva

Geneva may be synonymous with international diplomacy, finance and a high standard of living, but this French-speaking, cosmopolitan city has much more to offer the visitor than politics and money by MARIANNE GRAY GENEVA sits on the south-western end of Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman as it’s called in French, where the lake flows into the Rhône River. It is surrounded by two mountain chains, the Alps and the Jura, and on a good day Mont Blanc can be seen from the city centre. At the end of virtually every street you’ll see a peak or the lake. Geneva first appears in history as a Roman border town, fortified against the Celtic tribe Helvetii in 121 BC. Today, with a population of under 200,000,

its Old Town (the Vieille Ville) is surrounded by a compact modern city, with an opera house, luxury boutiques, banks and international organisations (the UN’s European HQ among them). Not short on culture, philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born there (in 1712), writer Voltaire had an estate there, it was the home of Calvinism and one of the great centres of the Protestant Reformation. The Red Cross was formed there by Henry Dunant (1863) and the city has featured in numerous books and films. Sophia Loren lives there and even Asterix

A favourite restaurant in the Old Town, Brasserie-Restaurant de l’Hotel-de-Ville, serves a fine Swiss menu. You could also take a train south-west into the wine growing area and come back by peniche along the river through lush nature sanctuaries. Or go round the lake in a paddle steamer built a hundred years ago. You might also

got there, in a tale involving an edelweiss flower and a lot of plum brandy. The Victorians enjoyed going there because of its fresh air, rippling lake and snow-capped mountains. The Duke of Brunswick, whose mother was Britain’s Princess Augusta, liked it so much, a monument to him similar to the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park was erected there. On a less happy royal note, Empress “Sissi” of Austria was assassinated at the lakeside in 1898. Geneva is a good landfall for an eventful long weekend, with its airport just 15 minutes from the city centre. On one day you could go to the pretty market town of Nyon and take the small tickety-tack train up the foothills of the Jura and hike through forest paths (in winter, hire snow shoes) or, much more relaxingly, have a leisurely fondue or a raclette at La Givrine, a chalet eatery there. On another day you could visit the Old Town: walk across Mont Blanc bridge or catch a yellow mouette boat across the water, narrowly missing being drenched by the Jet d’Eau, once a pressure release for hydro-power, now a permanent 140m plume of water and a Geneva landmark.

visit Carouge, a separate town 15 minutes away with its preserved 18th century streets. And to help offset the cost, hotels and hostels provide a free daily travel pass for guests. Getting there: Take the train through France to Geneva. It’s a lovely ride of about six hours from London. Details: www.geneva-tourism.ch

Painted Dogs are under threat of extinction: only 3,000 to 5,000 remain in the wild.

Zimbabwean Painted Dogs returned to the wild Aurora and Gaia are two Painted Dogs who grew up in the PDC Rehabilitation Facility in the Gwayi Conservancy

by JENNIFER MUNRO PAINTED Dogs, also known as African Wild Dogs, are unique to Africa, and they are one of the most endangered species. Only about 3,000 to 5,000 remain. The Painted Dog population in Zimbabwe is one of the last strongholds of the species, and Painted Dog Conservation (PDC) is an organisation committed to their survival. Aurora and Gaia are two Painted Dogs who grew up in the PDC Rehabilitation Facility in the Gwayi Conservancy bordering Hwange National Park. Lions had killed their parents, and PDC captured them and their three brothers to raise them safely. In April 2011 the orphans were moved to the Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve, where they learnt to be wild again. The pack split; the three brothers joined two wild females, leaving the sisters Gaia and Aurora to hunt for males and form a pack of their own.The Reserve acted as a halfway house for the dogs, but is not large enough for the dogs to remain permanently; each pack needs many square miles in which to roam and hunt. In February it was decided that Aurora and Gaia had to go to Gonarezhou National Park in the Lowveld where the gene pool had become very depleted. The dogs were darted, and then the veterinarian team, led by Dr Zishiri, went to work, giving them rabies vaccinations and taking samples. Both dogs were loaded into the back of a Land Rover for the first stage of their 1,000km journey. The first stage was a short hop to the PDC Rehabilitation Facility. Here the dogs were able to fully recover from the anaesthetic. Gaia and Aurora grew up in the Rehabilitation Facility and clearly recognised that they were “back home.” They soon began vocalising with Zanga, their foster father, and took the opportunity to have a good soak in their favourite bathtub! Gaia and Aurora were safely locked into

the back of a purpose-built trailer for the next leg of the long drive. With Dr Gregory Rasmussen the Director of PDC at the wheel of the Land Rover, and Mary Phiri, a National Parks Ranger dedicated to PDC in another car, the convoy drove through the cool of the night to Gonarezhou National Park. The Area Manager, Mr. Mpofu, plus rangers and research students, met them the next morning. The dogs jumped out of the trailer and were immediately fed, which is part of the process of helping them settle down. The mission for Gaia and Aurora is now to find mates and create a new pack to breathe life into the Lowveld painted dog population. Gonarezhou National Park Ecologist, Patience Gandiwa, soon reported that the dogs were seen a few days later with very full bellies, and no longer needed to be fed. According to Dr Rasmussen this is a truly significant step regarding the conservation of Zimbabwe’s painted dog population, and is testament to the commitment of Zimbabwe’s often-criticised Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. Did you know? • The Painted Dog population has almost doubled in 20 years: from 400 to 450 in 1987 to 750 in 2008 • PDC has a staff of 67 • PDC employs 28 men in three antipoaching units, who have gathered over 12,000 poaching snares since 2001 • PDC’s rehabilitation facility has served 29 dogs • 1,000 children per year attend the Bush Camp • 30 artisans work each day, producing snare wire sculptures to raise funds and awareness about conservation • PDC UK aims to support PDC in the field by raising funds and awareness in the UK, particularly with relevance to PDC’s local education initiatives Details: www.painteddog.co.uk

TEAM SA @ THE OLYMPICS Richard Murray | Triathlete by NICOLE HOLGATE 23-YEAR-OLD South African triathlete Richard Murray is incredibly ambitious. Having worked his way up the world rankings, gaining 28th place through his most recent race in San Diego, he has now qualified for the Olympic Games. We asked him how his preparation is going. “At present I am in Freiburg, Germany. Preparation at the Games will be in the form of three sprint races and an Olympic distance race. This is done so that I can both train and race to build my fitness. I am also currently self-coached, with some advice and guidance from Lindsey Parry from the HPC (High Performance Centre) in Pretoria.” Racing doesn’t occur throughout the year, but training is almost constant. “I start with my base training December to February, then progress from March to May. I will then peak around August after some hard months in June and July.” Having begun competing in triathlons in 2006, Richard didn’t become fully involved until 2009, which offered some unique challenges. “I worked very hard for four years on my swimming: it took a lot of miles to bring my technique up to the level of my competitors. We swim freestyle, which is the fastest stroke. From a running and cycling background, it has been a particularly hard battle… I am finally getting there.”

His upbringing in Durban inspired his athletic character and sheer determination. “I think where I come from is what has almost made me. Growing up on a farm, I needed to find things to do for fun: running, cycling and motocross were my first real passions. The weather also permits good outdoor training.” “I think Cape Town is the best place to stay in the world, and from the opinions of others here in Europe, they seem to agree!” But he enjoys competing internationally, especially in Europe. “Germany is amazing to train in with the mountains and safe roads to train on. Switzerland is one of my favourite places to race, and the Hamburg World Triathlon Series race is really something special.” “I am really looking forward to going to the UK, as I trained there before, in Leeds. My main sponsor, BSG [Multisport], is in London and it will be good to meet them. I haven’t seen the course for London yet, I’m focusing on getting training done.” Each day’s training is a full-on endeavour, including a morning cycle or swim “followed by a huge breakfast!” Then midday exercise sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays, and a two-to-four hour run in the evening, depending on whether he is recovering from a previous race. His first races of the season are at the end of February, and then he

goes on to the World Triathlon in Sydney in April. “The plan is to be strong for July/August. I can’t race too seriously early in the season. Racing season for me is from midApril to September: that’s around six months… long!” Spurring him on through this unrelenting schedule is the desire to achieve the zenith of his field: “Number one in the world is constantly in my mind. It’s very difficult to achieve: you need dedication, and a good training and racing plan is crucial.” There’s a certain streak of masochism in this desire, as he admits, “You have to enjoy pain to like training! You need to be comfortable during hard sessions, and during the hard weeks of racing.” Richard decided to be a full-time triathlete in 2010, after beginning serious training in 2009. His reasons are a mixture of passion and pragmatism: “I was World Junior Duathlon Champion in 2007 and 2008, and then needed to make the jump to duathlon’s bigger brother, triathlon, in order to start making a living from the sport.” It’s also a long-term career plan. “I will do ITU (International Triathlon Union) racing until I’m 30, then Xterra (Off-Road Triathlon Series) after it.” To relax, Richard likes to sleep, eat, read, and write his blog, which he thoroughly recommends you visiting at www.richardmurray. co.za

As he headed off I asked what he was up to. The reply was, “A one hour 50-minute bike ride in the mountains and a 20-minute easy run, as I raced this past weekend. Lunch just now, swim

at 3pm, writing a blog post midafternoon, and a 50-minute run this afternoon.” Twitter: @RD_murray Facebook: www.facebook.com/ RichardTRImurray

Hockey team have good chance of Olympic medal South African women’s hockey team still optimistic after narrowly losing to The Netherlands this weekend

by STAFF REPORTER AFTER narrowly losing to world champions The Netherlands in the semi-final of the Investec London Cup, the South African women’s

shoot-out, where South Africa lost 4-2, dashing their hopes of making the final. In the bronze play-off, they had to make do with fourth place after being beaten 6-2 by the “clinical” Germans. Holland beat Australia 4-1 to take the winner’s trophy. “It has been an exceptional tournament for us,” said SA assistant coach Fabian Gregory, referring in part to South Africa’s 3-1 upset of world number four and fancied Olympic Games gold medal contenders Great Britain in the opening Pool B match last Tuesday. In addition, South African captain Marsha Marescia was named Player of the Tournament. “We played very well against Germany in the first half today and while they got four goals in the second half, we had more goal shots,” said Gregory. “If we are more clinical in our finishing and

defend well there is no reason why we can’t get a medal at London 2012. I am happy with what we achieved and am excited about what we can still achieve in the build-up to London 2012.” The South Africans will go into a three-week physical training

Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day is back by RHYNIE GREEFF NEDBANK is once again the title sponsor of the UK’s annual charity golf day for South Africa. The Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day will take place at Foxhills Golf Club in Surrey on Thursday 13 September 2012. On Monday 60 sponsors and organisers gathered at Foxhills for the official launch and a touching audio-visual presentation on how the lives of specific South African children had been given more meaning with funds from the Nedbank South African Charity

Golf Day. In the past many of our readers have participated in this day as golfers, sponsors and supporters. With around 320 players every year the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day is arguably one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. Readers have helped to contribute more than £700,000 over the past 14 years to vulnerable children and their families in South Africa who struggle with the ravages of AIDS. MEYER PASSES FIRST TEST Boks beat England 22-17 in Kings Park home match

N

by STAFF REPORTER ew Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has been praised by both the South African and British press after he got his team off to a winning start with a 22-17 win over England in the first Test on Saturday. It was a tight contest and the teams were level at half-time, but the Boks lifted their game in the second half to pull away from the tourists, who scored a late consolation try to pull within seven points of the home side. “We knew England were going to be well prepared and they are a very physical side,” Meyer told a news conference. “There were a few nerves at the beginning, with a new captain and a few new players, but I was very happy with the performance.” Meyer had made no secret of his intention to implement a game plan built around powerful ball carriers. Mick Cleary of the Daily Telegraph commented, “South Africa is different – edgy, harsh and dangerous. And that’s just its rugby. The country itself is beautiful, vivid and varied. “The rugby is monochrome: mean, brutal, one-dimensional but effective. England were pounded by wave after wave of green shirts. The Springbok power game eventually took its toll, England being forced to back-pedal.” The first quarter was a physical struggle as both teams tried to impose themselves. Flyhalf Morne Steyn and new captain Jean de Villiers crossed for tries after Steyn and opposite number Owen Farrell had traded penalties to make the score 6-6 after 40 minutes. After the game, Meyer admitted he had delivered a half-time blast

to his charges, which clearly had the desired effect, as SA dominated the third quarter to pull clear. “I said to the forwards it wasn’t good enough,” Meyer said. “I wanted us to up the tempo and there were a few harsh words. A lot of players knew they had to step up in the second half and they did.” The home side were rewarded eight minutes into the second half when Steyn went over in the corner. The Springboks threatened to run away with the game when they extended the lead to 10 points after De Villiers charged over following a sweeping backline move greeted with roaring approval from most of the 43,000

Kings Park crowd. Farrell’s right boot narrowed the gap to four points with less than a quarter of an hour to play. Two penalties by Steyn followed in the next 10 minutes, leaving the Boks 22-12 with only two minutes to play. With time up, England finally crossed the Springboks' tryline. They forced a ruck before passing the ball out wide to Ben Foden, who crashed over the line. The victory was South Africa’s eighth in a row against England and gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second Test is in Johannesburg on Saturday, with the final match in Port Elizabeth on 23 June. www.thesouthafrican.com/sport
