VOTE ABROAD, ONLY IF YOU PAY TAX IN SA ANC London Branch to force South Africans to pay tax to Sars
By HEATHER WALKER
THE ANC London Branch is campaigning to prevent South Africans voting abroad unless they pay tax to the South African Revenue Service (Sars), regardless of whether they are earning a salary or have investments there. This campaign was launched by ANC London Interim Branch chairman Xolani Xala at last week’s Youth Day commemoration event in Brixton. In a speech at the Hector Pieterson monument Xala said, “We cannot fulfil the vision of economic freedom for all citizens, irrespective of colour, age, gender and background, when South Africans abroad are enjoying colonisation minority power, evidenced by the cheating on Sars instead of contributing towards the development of our beloved country. “As a consequence, our grandparents are not receiving decent state pensions while their contributions are being hijacked by voters who are not paying tax even though they are gainfully employed. “While South Africa is enjoying its 18th anniversary, we must not lose focus. Every working South African abroad must pay tax to Sars wherever they are working in the world. In the absence of doing this, our country will become a
Mampara Republic. This is not what the 1976 youth fought and died for. Why should South Africa in the post-apartheid era continue to be the fuel for imperialist tendencies? “Comrades, I am pleased to announce the launch of our campaign, No Tax, No Vote! For those who are employed abroad yet are not paying tax to Sars they must not be allowed to vote abroad,” he said. In 2009 a Constitutional Court Ruling gave South Africans who live and work outside of the country the right to vote in general elections if registered with South Africa’s chief electoral officer. Recently Sars announced that it would clamp down on target South African residents working abroad, however this applied only to those who earn a South African income from property or business interests. Xolani continued, “While South Africa celebrates political victory today, economic control and hence indirect political power continues to lie with overseas companies. South Africa is legally and politically independent but economically colonised. This weakens the government and stifles economic growth and service delivery to the majority of people who have been disadvantaged for so long. “Every section of the South African Government has a unique continues on page 3…

Hostage couple released
WE WILL TAKE YOU HOME/ONS DOEN DIE GROOT TREK HUIS TOE...
Durban couple held captive for 18 months freed following negotiations between the SA, Somali and Italian governments
THE South African government has expressed joy following the release on Thursday of a South African couple held captive by Somali pirates since October 2010. The Durban couple, Bruno Pelizzari and Debbie Calitz, was freed following negotiations between the South African, Somali and Italian governments. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation expressed gratitude to both governments. It said the couple was released unharmed and is receiving consular support from the South African mission to Somalia, which is based in Nairobi, Kenya. Arrangements are being made for the return of the couple to South Africa. “South Africa’s Ambassador designate to Somalia, Ndumiso Ntshinga, is in contact with the couple and the authorities in
Bruno Pelizzari and Debbie Calitz
Somalia and has verified that the couple is in good health and eager to be re-united with their loved ones,” said the department. Throughout the ordeal, the pirate ring demanded ransoms and initially demanded $10 million from the families of the couple. The ransom dropped to $500 000
in March last year. The couple were taken hostage off the Gulf of Aden in October 2010 after armed pirates hijacked their yacht as it was about to enter the Mozambique channel south of Dar es Salaam. - BuaNews

role to play: the South Africa Parliament, the South African Embassies, our High Commission and all related structures, must be synchronised with the vision of the country to maximise the fruits of our labour as proud South African ambassadors. Amandla!” Xala said he would be handing over a memorandum on the No tax, No Vote campaign at this week’s ANC’s National Policy Conference in Midrand, Gauteng. He also said he would push for ANC international branches to become officially recognised. DA Abroad Global Chairperson Ludre Stevens said his organisation was “very surprised” about the ANC’s No Tax, No Vote campaign as it “violates every South African citizen’s constitutional right to vote.” He continued, “It’s rather ironic that the ANC, who fought for the right to vote, are now proposing that this be taken away. “According to Sars there are 10.3 million registered taxpayers. The IEC has estimated that 28 million people are eligible to vote in South Africa. Is the ANC therefore implying that 17.7 million South Africans should not be voting in the next election? That would exclude our grandparents, welfare beneficiaries, university students, and the unemployed! “Every adult South African citizen has the right to vote - we will fight to protect this right,” said Stevens.

Ditching bad habits for a stronger economy
Habits can be nasty things. They get us into a rut and we’re unable to progress because we’ve become so used to doing things a certain way. There are two bad habits currently affecting South Africa’s growth and development that need to be kicked: 1) Ignoring new opportunities and
Follow us on Twitter: @TheSAnews
focusing on the wrongs of the past only and 2) A stubborn allegiance to petty politics. Bad habit 1: Ignoring new opportunities South Africa has 3,000km of coastline and eight major harbours, yet it does not have single South African-flagged commercial vessel on its shipping register. This despite the fact that up to 12,000 foreign vessels visit the country’s eight ports each year. These vessels move about 264 million tons at an estimated cost of R45 billion, which is paid to foreign owners and operators for
maritime transport services. For the record, Brazil operates a fleet of 172 merchant vessels, Russia 1,891, India 534 and China 2,044. So here’s a suggestion to the government (and the ANCYL) – please ‘nationalise’ (and I mean that metaphorically) some of this trade for our country. Just think of all the jobs and economic growth it will create. You decide.
South Africa, but one: Cosatu. We know how powerful Cosatu is in the ANC Tripartite Alliance, and their lone and spurious opposition to this subsidy borders on insanity. Vavi, this month we celebrated Youth Day, and in that spirit we call on you to please stop petty politics, and support this programme of real job creation and poverty alleviation. You decide.
Bad habit 2: Petty politics The DA has a plan to help 423,000 young people get jobs through the Youth Wage Subsidy. After lots of hard work this policy is now supported by all key players in

What do you think of Britain’s new family migration laws?
Petronella: I was born & brought up in England, had a good education (including university) – yet even I did not know all the answers to the Life in the UK test questions! KGeez00: I used to work in Whitehall. The indigenous British citizens didn’t know the answers! I got more correct than they did ie Should they be deported. (Insert hysterical laughter here). But, hang on don’t they bitch and moan that they can’t get into Australia and New Zealand, (more chuckles here). Better be careful as the new “snoop” laws might get me deported? Vusumuzi O Sibanda: There are books you can buy from bookshops that can be very helpful. If you study them thoroughly there is no way you can fail the test as they literally tell you all the answers to all the questions that can be asked. The books come with a supporting website. Gregory: So Brits now can’t marry foreigners without the risk of becoming exiles themselves? I’m sure it will sit well with those Tory supporters who would admonish one to ‘marry a nice British girl/ boy instead’. The new Britain is xenophobic and not afraid to show it… Nkosi’k: The Brits are clearly letting the world know that they are not welcome here, square one of colonial rules. That’s why although they are members of the EU but cannot ditch the pound lest they lose the image and sovereignty. They should be made to made to apply for and pay dearly for visas to Africa and other countries, especially those they stole from and colonised for so long! Karen: In the name of equality (which is what the UK prides itself on does it not? Or supposedly promotes) I propose all individuals, British and non-British, write the language and life in the UK test and we see what proportion of results actually meet the required standard! Manisha: This new rule is not fair. I just don’t understand. Michael: I am South African, been
in London for a series of public (and free to attend) events, some of which will focus on the SA economy and in particular the DA’s 8% Economic Growth Plan – a plan that will ensure a growth of at least 8% annually in order to break the cycle of poverty and move us to prosperity for all. Continue the discussion on www.facebook.com/ DemocraticAllianceAbroad Ludre Stevens, Democratic Alliance Abroad chairperson Note: This column is paid for content and represents the client’s independent opinion. here since 1999, on an ancestral visa. I have been working in a bank here in London, for the past 12 years and you would not believe the number of ‘spouses’ coming through, especially from the Indian sub-continent. At my current branch, you wouldn’t believe the number accounts previously opened, where the account holder cannot speak English, but all that they can do is to give you their card and say either “child benefit” or “tax credit”, with that dumb look on their face. So yes, it’s about time the UK Government got a lot stricter about migration. Henroski Da: As a matter of fact and law, the proposal is wrongly contemplated. No rational leader of any meaningful organisation like UKBA ought to consider this workable Vix: Looking at some of these comments, it looks like the English exam is way more than simply justified. Immigration has been too lax for years, it’s time to step up the requirements in all spheres. Guy Young: Totally agree with some of the rules but… do not lose good qualified people. I have been here 13 years from SA, and have noticed that the majority of the people taking advantage are generally the ones who cannot even utter a word of English, a brother of a cousin or a sister of an aunty etc. A test on the reasons to be here should suffice… the rest, goodbye and no defence at the state’s expense! Cassandra: Human rights - that is so debatable. They protect the crooks. The new laws are too late. They close the gate when the bull is gone! The price? More crime… more NHS expenditure… more abuse of the system. Also foreigners who got a British passport and do crime should be deported. An EU passport is a privilege which should be revoked if abused. Curious: This is a bit far-fetched, it seems that the UK government does not want migrant workers (family members of migrant workers). The BIGGEST mistake they made was to be part of EU, where members of sister states can get into the UK without visas Join the debate on www.thesouthafrican.com

Lycamobile to Lycamobile

The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD
We demand some booze for the kids! I’VE only ever heard one piece of advice worth following. That’s an absolute. Because for every piece of advice you’re handed, there will be another that directly contradicts it. But this one is the exception. It is true in all circumstances, and never fails. It is this: never tell a baby not to stick beans up its nose. It’s advice that the cheerfullynamed Social Protection and Community Development Cluster should heed, because they’re in danger of having to go in with a pair of forceps and a handkerchief. The SPCDC are a South African group lobbying parliament to raise the legal alcohol purchasing age from 18 to 21, to ban all alcohol advertising and license shebeens. In other words, a random group of busybodies who nobody has really ever heard of before has taken it upon themselves to be the moral guardians of the country, and to hit people with big sticks. Nice work. Is alcoholism in South Africa a problem? Of course it is. It’s a monumental problem. But it is not a problem because of teens getting snotklap drunk. It is a problem because people who have zero prospects, no job and little income view it as an escape. Alcoholism is a symptom – an awful one, but a symptom nonetheless. And you
cannot fix the problem by taking it away from people. This isn’t prohibition, but it’s the same idea. And it does. Not. Work. Can I propose a radical idea here? It’ll get me more hate mail than this newspaper can handle, but it’s worth a shot (and by the way, this is my opinion and mine only, so don’t hold them accountable). Don’t raise the legal drinking age. Lower it. Drop it to 15. Or 14. Or better yet: scrap the damn thing entirely. Let kids drink whenever they want to drink. Do you know why children booze? It’s because alcohol is this mythical, unattainable goal – a prize for turning 18, and something to be sneakily sought out before that. It’s cool, because it’s illegal. It becomes something special. So what if – and I grant you that this is one hell of an ask – you could introduce kids to alcohol early on? Here you go mate, try this. Careful, it’ll mess you up if you drink too much, but you’re growing up. We reckon you can handle a beer or two with your parents or your teachers. And guess what? I have a sneaking suspicion that if you treat kids like adults, they will act like them. The SPCDC and their mission will do incalculable damage to the economy, to the structure of South African society and indeed the very space-time continuum. Ironically, I’d wager that their plans will actually cause drinking – and particularly underrage drinking – to skyrocket. Why is it that sober people are often a lot more stupid than drunk people? www.thesouthafrican.com/ entertainment

by SANDY CADIZ-SMITH THE three-day Back2Black festival arrives in London next week, with a stellar line-up that includes South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela. It runs on Friday 29, Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July across three stages at Old Billingsgate Market, East London, EC3R 6DX. The three-day festival (part of the London 2012 Festival), is the first ever iteration outside Brazil. Hosted by and featuring Gilberto Gil and produced by the Barbican, Zoocom Events and Serious, this urban festival is a celebration of
African roots in music and culture. It features an eclectic line-up of more than 20 Brazilian, UK and international artists in a heady mix of funk, reggae, dub, hip hop, samba, and blues. Festival highlights include: • Live music by artists including Gilberto Gil, Macy Gray, Amadou & Mariam and Roots Manuva • Drumming displays and workshops involving Drum Heads, an ensemble of young musicians from East London, and the Pracatum School from Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. • African & Brazilian craft market and a host of food & drink stalls. • Live interviews and panel sessions with artists and leading cultural commentators, including a conversation between Gil and Masekela around the subject of musicians in
exile. Launched in Rio de Janeiro in 2009, the annual Back2Black festival has quickly established itself as one of the foremost cultural events in Brazil, attracting more than 35,000 visitors to date. A pioneer in promoting global appreciation for black culture in Brazil, this curated festival explores new ways of presenting music and art and aims to entertain, raise awareness, further cultural exchange and rebuild bridges, bringing Brazil back in touch with its African heritage. Since its inaugural edition, the Back2Black festival has taken place in the beautiful setting of the disused Leopoldina railway station close to downtown Rio de Janeiro. To recreate a similar setting, the London festival will be held at Old Billingsgate Market. www.thesouthafrican.com/ entertainment

Bring on the boerie Durbs boy Jono Rae is on a mission to make London’s best boerie rolls who I am and where I am from. I even chose the name JoJo’s as my cousin called me this when I was growing up so it reminds me of what I am all about. “It’s taken us just over a year to get where we are, with our share of challenges along the way. I was going to open a restaurant but just could not afford it, so my girlfriend Katrina Rodrigues and I decided to do it trailer style. I bought a trailer, stripped it to a bare shell and spent about eight weeks rebuilding. We then fought to find a place to trade. Everywhere is a nightmare to get into but we persevered. There are still challenges and we are constantly trying to find new ideas or places to trade but the business is doing okay and things are starting to come alive so I am looking at ways to better the business.” If you’re feeling fearless (and very hungry), why not try JoJo’s
by SANDY CADIZ-SMITH I LOVE it when I walk home from work on a sunny evening and can smell the boerewors braaing. I live in quite a South African neighbourhood in London, you see. The aroma is enough to make anyone salivate and dream of the perfect boerie roll. So I’m pleased to say that Jono Rae has taken on the challenge of providing just that. He explained, “When it comes to food, people say you should do what you know and keep it simple so as I have 27 years experience of eating boerewors and 21 years experience of cooking it, it seemed the perfect place to focus my energies. My plan is to create the best fresh boerewors roll you will ever eat. I went on a mission to source the perfect mix with recipes that are simple yet have bold flavours. Boerewors Challenge? Go head to head against an opponent to finish off one metre of boerewors, 800mm of roll, 2-3 onions and JoJo’s secret sauce plus a 500ml Pepsi in under 30 minutes. If you can do it you get a printed T-shirt and a place on the wall of fame once the website is complete (and of course a free roll). Lose and you pay £20, so make sure you’re up to the challenge. Jono’s motto is ‘freshly cooked and served with passion’ and it’s his passion that’s got him this far. You’ll find JoJo’s at Homebase in Merton every Tuesday-Friday from 9.30am-5.30pm and on Saturdays from 9am-6pm. On Sundays they are at The Dog Track Market in Wimbledon from 9am-2pm. the initial gasping audacity, then the laughter and hopefully, your sense of humour intact, the idea of who actually is a citizen of South Africa takes hold. The San were there before time. Then came the migrant tribes, the wooden clog people with cheese, needing a pit stop en route to the spices. Oh, that was after the original Nando’s explorers and a little before the Redcoats decided that the Queen needed to rule the world. Turn the history pages and some poor fleeing folk with winemaking skills arrived on boats. More settlers from Mud Island, failed potato farmers and slaves ripped from their homelands to come and cut the cane. A mixed bag of languages, looks and religious beliefs. But then who’s still playing the game of ‘I was here first’? Every one of these stragglers with broken dreams and a fierce spirit landed, swam or crawled towards a future and South Africa would be nothing without each one of them. Claiming superiority obviously did not work out that well. Take a
tour of the battlefields to work that one out, but while the Redcoats and the velskoens tackled each other and the migrating tribes, others moved on; got up to a bit of cross-pollination and today we should realise that it takes more than birth within borders to build a nation. Take them all away, as in the advertisement, and you are left with a tribe still wearing loin cloths. There would be no South Africa, perhaps another China, but no South Africa. But what I love the most about the latest Nando’s ad, is that despite certainty that someone is going to complain; that the powers will have no alternative but to ban the advertisement, the creative forces behind it also believe that most South Africans have a fantastic sense of humour. We can laugh at ourselves; take it headon and it makes us even prouder to belong. Built of strong stuff we are. Bad luck for the chickens though. www.thesouthafrican.com/people

WHEN I die, I want to come back as part of the Nando’s advertising team. Poof, and there I am, sitting around a conference table, throwing out ideas, brainstorming and coming up with genius ads. Knowing that they will be banned seconds after being released but going ahead with it anyway. ‘Did you see the latest Nando’s ad?’ the multitude ask. What a question. A million hits on Youtube, pasted on Facebook, Twitter and the message is there. People may be shocked, appalled even, but everyone remembers – who wants better marketing than that? The latest ad, and I am surprised if you haven’t seen it, has various members of our South African population literally going up in smoke. Go away you immigrants, vamoose from our shores till we are left with the San. The original South Africans. I wish I could think up advertisements like that and I give the creative agency a big gold star for being so bold. One happy client. Who else would have a poster saying ‘Nando’s, the finishing school for chickens.’? More importantly, these advertisements not only seek to shock, but also to give food for thought. After

Stand-Up Chameleon Barry Hilton on his way to London Did you know?
IN case you haven’t guessed already, our mystery star last week has been revealed as South Africa’s number one comedian Barry Hilton, who will return to the UK to perform at London’s Clapham Grand on 12 July. Fresh off critically acclaimed shows in Hong Kong, the USA, Zambia, Mauritius, Swaziland and Mozambique, Barry is celebrating his 30th year in comedy with
his Stand Up Chameleon tour. He believes his particular brand of comedy is not just for South Africans and that “anyone who understands English will be thoroughly entertained!” ‘The Cousin’ as he is fondly known has a knack for extracting humour from everyday situations as well as using his inimitable facial expressions to crack up audiences.
• Barry goes by his second name – his first is David • Barry has been the face of South African cider Savanna Dry since 1999, with the slogan, ‘it’s dry, but you can drink it’. • At the Feel Good Film Festival in Hollywood, Barry was nominated for best actor in a lead role for the successful South African film Finding Lenny. • Barry was born in Zimbabwe, moved to North Wales with his parents at the age of five and then to Cape Town at ten years old. • He started out as an electrician before turning to professional comedy at the age of 26. • Barry has been married three times and has six children aged between two and 33.

Recipe for Amarula tiramisu with meringue topping AH Amarula, what a great drink. If you don’t have any ready to go, Cape Velvet will also do the trick. The meringue topping makes for something a little more interesting, it is easy-peasy and if you follow the recipe it won’t let you down. A real ‘wow’ factor little dessert with an interesting twist.
Ingredients: For the tiramisu • 1 egg • 2 egg yolks • 125g castor sugar • 100g mascarpone • 150ml double cream • 60ml strong black coffee • 200ml Amarula cream or Cape Velvet • 1 pkt of sponge fingers For the meringue topping: • 2 egg whites • 50ml castor sugar
Method: For the tiramisu: • In a large bowl, using an electric whisk, beat together the egg, egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy.
Angie Steele’s Amarula tiramisu with meringue topping
• Add the mascarpone and beat in well. • In a separate bowl, whisk the double cream until soft peak stage. • Fold the cream into the mascarpone mixture using a large metal spoon. • Using a wide dish combine the coffee and Amarula together. • Spread a small amount of the mascarpone mix on the bottom of your serving dish. • Dip the sponge fingers in the coffee mix one at a time and line them individually on top of the mascarpone mix. • Cover this layer of fingers with another layer of mascarpone mixture and repeat the process with the fingers. • Repeat the layers until all the mixture has been used, ending with a layer of fingers. • Place in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours before serving.
• Before serving, pipe the meringue over the top and brown it by either using a blowtorch or under a hot grill. For the meringue topping: • Whisk the egg whites until soft peak using an electric whisk, then slowly add the sugar and whisk until stiff. • Once the tiramisu is ready, top with the meringue and brown. Nedbank offers banking for Africa
Over the past two decades, Nedbank has focused on delivering its sought-after ‘bank for all’ proposition - starting in southern Africa and extending across Africa and beyond AS one of South Africa’s major banks, Nedbank Group has its roots firmly planted in the southern tip of Africa. From here the ‘green’ bank - so called because of the leadership position it has taken in terms of integrated environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability - provides a comprehensive range of wholesale and retail banking services, investment, finance, insurance and asset and wealth management services. It does this through its five primary business clusters of Nedbank Capital, Nedbank Corporate, Nedbank Business Banking, Nedbank Retail and Nedbank Wealth, each of which has its own focus and target market, but all of which are closely interconnected via a shared vision for the greater Nedbank group and brand. The bank’s vision extends far beyond the borders of South Africa. Over the past two decades, Nedbank has focused considerable resources and energy on delivering its sought-after ‘bank for all’ proposition - starting in southern Africa and extending across Africa and beyond.
This expansion focus is not a strategy of growth just for growth’s sake. The bank’s stated vision is to ‘build Africa’s most admired bank by staff, clients, shareholders, regulators and communities’, and it sincerely believes that by bringing its enabling banking products and services to as many African countries and people as possible, it will facilitate the economic upliftment, empowerment and growth that is needed for the resource-rich continent to be able to fully realise its potential as a significant global economic and social development powerhouse. To realise this vision, in 2008 the group formed an alliance with Ecobank - the leading PanAfrican banking group that offers full service regional banking in 30 African countries. Through the Nedbank Ecobank Alliance, these two leading African banking groups are offering a steadily growing base of clients across Africa ready access to a simple but effective range of country-specific, tailored banking solutions. Using its global coverage business model, the alliance affords clients a single point of
contact regardless of where in the world they find themselves. In addition, the alliance’s innovative strategic business advisory unit, called LocalKnowledgeAfrica, supports business development on the continent by offering access to its extensive local knowledge and understanding of African markets and business challenges. The effectiveness of the Ecobank Nedbank Alliance in providing individuals and businesses in Africa with tailored, regionspecific banking solutions, and enabling the establishment and growth of global businesses on the continent, was recognised by the world’s banking industry when Ecobank and Nedbank were jointly awarded Most Innovative Bank of the Year at the African Banker Awards in Washington in 2010. While being the preferred bank for all South Africans remains the core focus of Nedbank Group, the bank is absolutely committed to harnessing its extensive experience and expertise as a leading South African bank to make sure that as many people as possible - in Africa and around the world – benefit from banking that really does Make Things Happen.
Nedbank has a solid presence through its Nedbank Africa operations in Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi and Zimbabwe, as well as the extensive financing activities, particularly by Nedbank Capital, in a variety of industries across much of the continent.

Did you want to be journo when you were growing up? I didn't set out to be a reporter but saw it as a good way of being able to do and say things that made a difference to the inequalities in SA. My first three years of journalism were spent predominantly covering the destruction of District Six in Cape Town, which took 13 years: from 1966, when it was declared a 'slum,' to 1980 when the last houses came down. Were you ever in the firing line as a reporter? I covered a great deal of activism in Cape Town just before the Soweto Uprising and did my time dodging riot police, tear gas and mass action charges. However, there was no hero in me; I didn't go into journalism for the buzz or the danger. I was much more interested in the political side and knew that journalism was an effective way of bringing about change. I do remember becoming weary of seeing dead and mangled bodies being carried off by police but I think the photographers were often the ones being fired upon.

In retrospect do you think you made a difference? Yes, I think the media played a significant role in the transformation of South Africa. Thankfully they are still making a difference. You now have a new generation of largely black editors
“The SA community abroad is now seen by government as a significant resource for skills, experience and influence. I like to talk about UK being The Tenth Province” and journalists who are putting their journalism before their blackness and telling the story as it is, in relation to corruption and fighting any attempts to muzzle the media. What's your most powerful memory from the journo years? There were many but perhaps one of the lasting images was the day of Nelson Mandela's inauguration at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, when the SANDF did the fly-past and Mandela saluted the new (and old) military. Branding South Africa abroad is a big task, what has been the most challenging aspect? It's been a challenge breaking through stereotypes regarding South Africa and black governments in Africa in general. I must say, there has been quite a change in people's attitudes, largely driven by what else has happened around the world. There has been a shift in focus by the G20 towards developing countries and South Africa has just joined the BRICS, leading emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Our challenge is to take advantage of being perceived as an emerging powerhouse. A close look needs to be taken at what it is exactly that we are offering foreign investors. We need to make it very clear what is
attractive in a highly competitive global market, and quickly! What is the best way to harness the power of South Africans abroad? The SA government's attitude in the past had tended to follow the stereotype that South Africans abroad had fled for whatever reason and were therefore of no value. This has changed significantly. The SA community abroad is now seen as a significant resource for skills, experience and influence. If positively engaged they can form a crucial part of solving challenges that face the country in terms of foreign

investment, building tourism and trade. I like to talk about the community here as being 'The Tenth Province'. I think government has increasingly bought into this vision of the Global South African network. What makes you a successful individual? The golden thread throughout my professional life has been the passion to build South Africa and make it a better place. My personal brand I suppose is listening to others and respecting their views and then trying to persuade them within that framework to share in building support for South Africa.

The Graft is Greener: Passion for biltong is what makes this South African tick! Rose Peacock Born: The Bluff, Durban How long in UK: Since 16 February 2004 Job: Factory manager and general factotum. My husband, is the owner of Biltong Direct, I am simply his second in command. I do the writing and communicating most of the time. Background: Secretarial training in the dark ages, had three children, then after a long break – PA to ministers of religion and church administrator for 25 years; professional wedding videographer for several years and ran a conference centre for a year – including the cooking! Then came to UK and started on a hobby – making biltong. Now an eight year old business selling online throughout UK and Europe; direct retail from our shop on Canvey Island and outlest around London. Our company motto is: We SAtisfy your craving for the taste of South Africa anywhere, any time.
by PAUL HARRISON What do you do in your job? My part in our team is to manage the day-to-day running of the factory and shop, to fill in when there is a gap in any department, to do a bit of bookkeeping – and make melktert!
What is the most exciting thing about your job It always gives me (us all) a buzz when a new customers walks in and just stands and sniffs, taking in the smells from home. It is really exciting though to see how many British customers are becoming hooked on our products. What is the most challenging thing about your job? Seeing into the future… Which product will people be ordering in three to five days time, so we can ensure we have it at just the right degree of dryness for them. How has your biltong been received in the UK? It is interesting and rewarding to watch people’s reactions to South African meat products, and find
so many Brits now willing to try new tastes. The Environmental Health people have been on the journey with us and have awarded us approval for our premises and a 5 Star Food Hygiene rating. It also amazes me how often people come into our shop and we find we either knew them or a relative from back home. The world is a very small place. We find that most of our customers have become friends as they have been with us for years and we even dispense hugs when
people are missing home.
Future plans? We aim to retain and grow our market share and draw in ever more British customers. We would like to open another shop in a higher footfall area as soon as the economy starts picking up again. Do you think being South African helps you in your job? You can guess the answer to that one!

Marianne Gray samples this delightful German city
Take a trip on a paddle steamer down the River Elbe or enjoy Dresden’s city sights. Photos by Kolossos/ Wikimedia Commons (top) and Thom Quine (bottom)
by MARIANNE GRAY IN postcard racks in Dresden you’ll find black and white images of the city absolutely flattened by carpet bombs and the ensuing firestorms of 1945. Buildings were left with hardly one stone on top of another; it is chilling what a single night of bombing did to shatter the once fairytale city of Dresden. But now, as you look up from these bleak postcards, you see not a city defined by its ruins but one of Europe’s most elegant and imperial centres, risen from the ashes in solid Saxon sandstone with its unbroken spirit and polite manner. Once again the old centre is easily recognisable as in the cityscapes Canaletto painted in the late 1700s. Virtually every building has been flawlessly restored in this compact 18th century city built by Augustus 1 of Saxony. He came to the throne in 1694 at the age of 24, loved beautiful things and encouraged the finest artists from other countries to come and help realise his vision for a profusion of castles, palaces, churches, Baroque houses and parks. Set against gentle hills and vineyards sloping down to the lush banks of the River Elbe, Dresden was named the Florence of the North and everybody came to see it.
The Kings of Saxony built grand Renaissance palaces. Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff made music there, Wagner conceived his ‘Ring of the Nibelungen’ and Richard Strauss conducted in the city’s Semper Opera House. At the Zwinger one of the finest collections of Rembrandts and Rubens hang, while the great Expressionist artist Kirchner started his career in Dresden and Schiller wrote his ‘Ode to Joy’, best known as the final chorus of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and now the anthem of the European Union, in the city. Although Dresden was formerly in East Germany, thankfully there are virtually no constructivist concrete slab buildings to be seen, just the oddity of a squat orange glass Communist-built arts centre in the middle of the main square. We popped in to have a quick glance and found international pianist Helen Huang playing Shostokovich with Kurt Masur conducting the Staatskapelle Dresden Orchestra, one of the world’s oldest and finest, all part of the music festival that takes place in May and June. There is almost too much to see and do in Dresden. Sipping a glass of sekt with a plate of white spargel (asparagus) or having a long cool beer with frankfurters
and chips in a brauhaus overlooking the Elbe is not an arduous way to pass time. Of course, there are also the novelty places to visit like the Museum of Hygiene, Emil and the Detectives author Erich Kastner’s house, now a museum, and the glass production plant for limousines. You could take the old train ride through the park or hop on one of the antique paddle steamers and go downstream to Meissen to see the porcelain factory or head upstream and sail past splendid castles before ending up in the bizarre rock landscape of ‘Saxon Switzerland’. Dresden is not one of your average short break cities but it’s certainly one of the more unusual ones.
How to get there: Lufthansa and German wings fly London/Dresden direct. Trains from many European centres go there and the SimplonOrient Express’ Venice-KrakowDresden-London route includes three nights in Dresden. Further details: info@dresden.travel

Southern African writers in Caine Prize shortlist
by STAFF REPORTER THE five shortlisted candidates for Africa’s leading literary award, the Caine Prize, include a South African and a Zimbabwean. The award is in its 13th year and represents African writers who are published in English, for any fiction between 3,000 and 10,000 words. South Africa’s Constance Myburgh has been selected for ‘Hunter Emanuel’ from Jungle Jim while Zimbabwe’s Melissa Tandiwe Myambo caught the judges’ attention for ‘La Salle de Depart’ from Prick of the Spindle. Melissa Tandiwe Myambo is the author of Jacaranda Journals, a collection of short stories set in Zimbabwe. ‘La Salle de Départ’ is part of her new collection tentatively entitled ‘Airport Stories’. Jenna Bass, writing as Constance Myburgh, is a South African filmmaker, photographer, writer and retired magician. Her awardwinning, Zimbabwe-set short film, ‘The Tunnel’, premiered at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals and continues to screen internationally. She is currently engaged on her debut feature, Tok Tokkie, a supernatural noir set in Cape Town. Jenna is also the editor and co-creator of Jungle Jim, a pulpliterary magazine for African writing. The chair of judges Bernadine Evaristo MBE, an author and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, described the shortlist as “truly diverse fiction from a truly diverse continent.”

Zimbabwe Community The Last WORD JENNIFER MUNRO
South Africa’s Constance Myburgh is on the shortlist for Africa’s leading literary prize.
He continued, “The shortlist shows the range of African fiction beyond the more stereotypical narratives. These stories have an originality and facility with language that made them stand out.” Stories include a provocative tale of homosexuality in Malawi, and another of fighting Sengalese siblings. Announcing the awards was new vice president and famous Nigerian author Ben Okri. Okri has been involved with the awards since their inception in 2000 but took this new role in April this year. Other personnel changes have included Ellah Alfrey OBE as new Deputy Chair and new administrator Lizzy Attree. There is a prize of £10,000 and an opportunity to become Georgetown University’s Writer-In-Residence for one month for the winning entry, which will be announced on Monday 2 July at a dinner at Bodleian Library, Oxford. Last year’s winner was Zimbabwean NoViolet Bulawayo, who is about to release her debut novel, We Need New Names. Read the stories of all the nominees on www.caineprize.com
Join the vigil for Zimbabweans FOR all the dispossessed, scattered, exiled and homeless Zimbabweans abroad the good news is that there is an organisation actually ‘doing-something-about-it’. Every Saturday from 2pm till 6pm members of ‘The Zimbabwe Vigil Coalition’ meet outside the Zimbabwe Embassy on the Strand in London to protest against the gross violations of human rights by the current regime in Zimbabwe. They intend to continue doing so until internationally monitored, free and fair elections are held in Zimbabwe. The Vigil started in 2002 when Roy Bennett, MDC MP and Tony Reeder of the Amani Trust visited London and suggested that it might be an effective way to raise awareness in the UK to the plight of the Zimbabwean people. They cited the hugely successful pickets that used to be held outside South Africa House during the time of apartheid. The Vigil welcomes new members, and they meet every Saturday no matter what the weather. Concerned Londoners queue at the Vigil to sign petitions that call for the UN to send a team to Zimbabwe to investigate human rights abuses, protest World Cup Cricket matches in Zimbabwe, and call for the suspension of Zimbabwe from the Commonwealth. In true Zimbabwean style there is a lot of singing and dancing that always draws attention from the crowds. The Vigil runs a very active website that connects Zimbabweans in many different ways. There is a list of all those who have died in political violence (The Roll of Honour) and another list called the Rogues Gallery, of members of the police force and the CIO who are repeatedly being mentioned by the hundreds of MDC activists who have
Zimbabweans gather in London to protest. Photo by Zimbabwe Vigil.
been arrested and tortured while in custody. The Vigil appeals to the families of these people to restrain them, and think about the future. There is also a helpful page for refugees linking them to organisations that can help them. In spite of all their hard work it seems to be an uphill battle for exiled Zimbabweans to get any kind of action out of the UN or even the British Government. A petition containing 12,000 signatures calling for monitoring of the upcoming elections and addressed to the British Prime Minister, was forwarded to the Zimbabwe Unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for a reply. The reply, in a nutshell, was ‘No’, although it couches the refusal in such concerned and responsible terms that one has the feeling that the 12,000 signatories are being told to go to hell in such a way that they will look forward to the trip. The UN can only act in response to an invitation from the government of Zimbabwe apparently. I would love to see a copy of the invitation from Colonel Gadaffi to turn Libya upside down, or from any of the other oilrich countries where the UN and the British government have found it their moral duty to interfere. Oh well… we must content ourselves with the thought that things are being ‘monitored closely’. www.thesouthafrican.com/zimbabwe

TEAM SA @ THE OLYMPICS Paul Hart | Equestrian
By AMBER BARSON CHILDHOOD dreams have become a reality for top South African event rider Paul Hart. He started riding at the age of six and always dreamt about one day competing at the Olympics. People laughed at the idea as back then it was impossible. But through the years the South African Equestrian Association have put in a lot of effort to improve competition in our country and making it possible for riders to compete at an international level. Movement restrictions due to African Horse Sickness (AHS) have made it difficult to fly horses abroad, however. Paul’s journey to the Olympics started back in 2010 when he was chosen to represent South Africa at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Kentucky, USA on his horse Heartbreak Hill (Harry). He then decided to keep Harry with Tasmin Hutchins in Cornwall, UK, allowing him to be able to ride
and compete over here. “When I am away from him she rides and exercises him and treats him like gold. I am so thankful for all her help and devotion to my amazing boys.” Paul actively competes in eventing and showjumping in South Africa while being trained by Gonda Beatrix and Marianne Conlyn, and flies over to England a couple times a year to compete in major competitions such as Blenheim International Horse Trials. Harry is a South African-bred thoroughbred that raced in the past. He was brought to Paul as a six-year-old that kept stopping in the 1.10m showjumping classes. It took two years to sort out Harry’s problems and improve his flatwork, but he has now turned into something truly special. In 2008 the pair won the South African Eventing Championships, which was something Paul wanted to win since the age of 18, having come second or third every year. The strong bond between Harry and Paul is amazing to see, despite the long distance relationship. “I believe Harry understands our journey and always seems to rise
to the occasion. Whatever I ask of him he always seems to give more, and will always put his best foot forward,” he said. This is the first time ever that a rider has competed at WEG and the Olympics on a South African bred thoroughbred. Paul is very fortunate to have a second ride based with Tamsin, Carlow Miller, which he rode at the Greenwich test event last year. The pre-Olympic event allowed riders to get a feel for the competition and see what the running is like. It is a beautiful location and Paul thinks that the track will suit a horse like Harry. Still, Harry is doing a lot of strength and fitness training which includes hill work and road work. Paul does spinning and stretch exercises, and rides several horses every day. He works with a sport psychologist to ensure he is always on top of his game. “It is important that both horse and rider are a good combination and in a good space to do these events as it takes a lot of trust and commitment and energy to complete the three phases of eventing,” said Paul www.thesouthafrican.com/sport
South African Paralympics team announced
Oscar Pistorius and Natalie Du Toit are two of the 62 athletes who will represent South Africa at the Paralympic Games in London. by STAFF REPORTER NOT suprisingly, three-time Paralympian Oscar Pistorius and five-time gold medallist Natalie du Toit have been officially named as members of South Africa’s Paralympic team. South African sports governing body Sascoc on Wednesday announced the names of the 62 athletes who will represent us at the Paralympic Games in London in August The announcement at a glittering ceremony at Olympic House in Johannesburg came two weeks after the first 112 South African Olympic athletes were announced. According to Road to London, the squad will come from seven sporting codes: athletics, cycling, equestrian, rowing, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. Athletics will have the strongest representation, with 25 competitors. There will be 10 swimmers and six cyclists. The wheelchair basketball squad consists of 12 players. Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy said he was confident the selected
team would return triumphant. “Although qualifying standards are high, our Paralympians have a global reputation for excellence and I know they will once again do us proud. They’ve fought long and hard to get into this team and we shall see the rewards at these Paralympics.” Sascoc President Gideon Sam said it was only right that the Paralympians got their deserved share of publicity. “At our last press conference we shared with you our team for the Olympic Games in London and today it’s the turn of the Paralympic athletes to get their share of the limelight. “In the past we have come in for criticism about the performance of our Olympic teams but our Paralympic teams have done us proud.” he said. Sam reminded the audience that although the first South Africans to represent their country at the Paralympics, in Tokyo in 1964, numbered just nine, they set the benchmark by bringing back eight gold medals. He said at the last Paralympics in Beijing, our team

of 66 brought back 30 medals, 21 of which were gold. “Sadly we don’t have a huge Paralympic culture in this country. These are the stars who quietly go about doing their job of preparing for competitions at the very highest level. For something like three years and 11 months
you’ll hear just about nothing and then suddenly a month before the Olympics the country starts waking up and says: ‘Hey it’s the Paralympics, who is going? “But having said that, we thankfully have, in the shape of Oscar Pistorius and Natalie du Toit, two global superstars who
manage to keep the Paralympic flame burning and our other Paralympians must make sure they feed off this publicity and go on to carve their own niche in the sporting world. The Paralympics runs from 29 August to 9 September. www.thesouthafrican.com/sport

Zim defeat Proteas
FOR the second time in five days, less than illustrious cricketing neighbours Zimbabwe have convincingly defeated the Proteas. Although fielding a slightly weakened team, the Proteas will be disappointed with the series defeat, which was being used as preparation for the upcoming World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September. South Africa made 146-6 off 20 overs with Faf du Plessis (66) top scoring while Zimbabwe reached 150-1 with 17 balls to spare thanks to a superb unbeaten partnership between captain Brendan Taylor (59) and Hamilton Masakadza (58). Stand-in captain Hashim Amla will not be satisfied with the form he and his teammates showed. The well-crafted innings of 88 not out in the first game was quickly forgotten by a run of low scores, culminating in a paltry total of three in the final. “I thought 146 was a defendable total so hats off to Zimbabwe,” said Amla.

No wonder Zimbabweans are happier than South Africans (according to the Happy Planet Index) when their cricket team keeps beating ours...
Fenton-Wells said, “Everybody in SA rugby follows what is happening at Saracens, and I’m looking forward to joining a club that continues to break new ground in so many ways. BABY BOKS WIN JUNIOR WORLD CUP Under-20 rugby team beats defending champs NZ
by WESLEY MCKAY THE Baby Boks defeated the young Kiwis to become the Junior IRB World champions at a packed Newlands on Friday. In a nail-biting encounter, South Africa’s Under 20 rugby team had to come from behind against an impressive and talented opponent. The young Kiwis had won all four previous versions of the Junior World Cup and were undefeated going into the final. The Baby Boks’ last victory in a major junior tournament was in 2003, when Jake White coached the team to victory against Australia. Their path to the final was made all the more the difficult after a shock opening day defeat to Ireland. They then had to beat a determined Italian team in their second group game to keep tournament hopes alive, which they did. In the third and final group game, the Baby Boks needed to beat England as well as gain the extra four-try bonus point in order to qualify. A rousing performance saw them score four second half tries to defeat England and secure their places in the semi-final against Argentina. The Argentineans never really troubled the young Bok side in their semi-final encounter, with the South Africans turning out a convincing win to take them to a Newlands final against their old enemy New Zealand.

With a sold out and noisy Newlands crowd packed to the rafters, the Baby Boks had a distinct advantage even though they went into the final as slight underdogs.
Tries by Vian van der Watt and Jan Serfontein plus a drop goal and three penalties by Handre Pollard saw the South Africans through to a 22 – 16 victory to become the 2012 IRB Junior world champs.
