RODRIGUEZ GIG IN LONDON Rare performance by the legendary Rodriguez at screening of ‘Searching for Sugar Man’
by STAFF REPORTER
TONIGHT, Tuesday 3 July, the Curzon Soho will screen a special preview of the new film Searching for Sugar Man followed by a short performance by ‘Sugar Man’ himself. Malik Bendjelloul’s Searching for Sugar Man is a revelatory and compelling documentary about Mexican-American singersongwriter Sixto Rodriguez, who was momentarily hailed in 1970 as the finest recording artist of his generation, and then disappeared into oblivion – only to rise again from the ashes in a completely different context, a continent away. He had gone, but he was not forgotten, especially in South

Africa, where he had become a huge star. Wild rumours circulated for decades about his fate, until two music lovers set out to reveal the man behind the myth. Bendjelloul’s superb documentary goes in search of Rodriguez and, as a result, has resurrected the work of this criminally overlooked singersongwriter. Rodriguez will perform on the evening and will hold a postscreening discussion with the director. OUT of the categories, the beef biltong proved the most popular, with many suppliers scoring highly. The judges tended to prefer the wetter, chewier biltong with a bit of fat. One judge said she liked the ‘tong because it smelt like a farm – a strong, meaty flavour was essential. The dry wors also proved a polarising category in which the judges were difficult to impress. Again a careful balance of texture and flavour proved important. Flavoured biltong scored highly, winning over the judges with the magic combination of wetter texture and fuller flavours, although some couldn’t stand their spice as much as others. One judge even described a sample as presenting them with a ‘whirlpool’ of flavours. Nice!

On ‘Vote abroad? Only if you pay tax in SA’
How would you like me to make decisions in your household but not contribute to the upkeep of your household?
Henri: In the spirit of South Africa we follow the initiative of the leaders, and thus DEMAND, our right to vote, as South African citizens abroad! Support our right as citizens by joining this group on facebook for the 2014 SA elections! www.facebook.com/vote2014
Henri: Yet criminals can vote and they sure “contribute” quite a lot to South Africa, or is it because everyone knows who they vote for? South Africans abroad send a lot of money to South Africa due to having family there and contribute to tourism. This is just a political ploy to deny people their right to vote. Nothing else. Everyone knows who’s in power... and wants to stay in power!
Vusumuzi O Sibanda: Citizenship is a right that goes with obligations.
Vusumuzi O Sibanda: Criminals are citizens in SA. Who they vote for is their inalienable right. If they vote for the ANC whose government put them inside, who cares? Sending money to your relatives is not paying tax. As for tourism, I think you are giving yourself too much credit for something that is African. Africa will always attract tourists and investors with or without your help. This happens regardless of the security or poverty concerns (even a bloodbath). There once was a foreign minority government that stayed in power for more than

a century, oppressing, segregating and abusing the indigenous majority. ANC has only been there for less than 3 decades but have opened their welcoming and forgiving arms to yellow-bellied turncoats who have fled the country under dubious and misplaced misconceptions about citizenship. Citizenship is an all and all. No one leg in and one leg out. You don’t like it stay out, relinquish your citizenship and see if anyone cares. You want in, then be prepared for hard work. Do not present yourself as a martyr because you ain’t one. Hajnalka Wray: The majority of South African citizens are unable to pay any form of tax, yet they retain the right to vote. Criminals in jail have the right to vote and they contribute to the downgrade of society. How do you say it’s okay for a certain group of non-taxpayers to vote and not another? I’m a young South African living abroad, travelling the world, gaining new experiences and learning great things. I keep up to date with current South African affairs – heck, I even took a day off work to fully participate in the NPC Jam (something a lot of South Africans living in SA didn’t even know about or didn’t bother to participate in). It is my right and privilege to be a part of a globalised world and still have that one place on the planet I can call home, that I care about, that I can fight for, that runs through my blood. I was born African and I will take my last breath as an African. It is my right to vote for who I deem fit to run my country no matter where I am in the world, no matter how much money I earn, how much tax I pay and to whom. I was born with that right and I will not pay to retain that right. In fact, I think that South African youth have paid enough! Even though current governments and those of the past have horribly failed us – and continue to do so – I am a South African living abroad and I am IN. Ams: I think it is fair. How do you decide the future of the land where you are not contributing anything? Helen Gill: Many of us contributed before we came overseas and we will contribute again when we return. How can we pay tax in two places but have a voice in none? Typical South African “democracy”! They want our money but not our vote. Frankly, my money is worth more to me than my vote. Brett: I think it is a fantastic idea that only those who pay tax in SA should be allowed to vote. Voting would be over in an hour and results out by 9pm that evening. More importantly, those who work for a living won’t be outnumbered by those who vote for a living. Marc: Xolani, this is not South Africa. Try stopping the filling of cadres pockets with SA’s hard earned tax first… Keep your politics back home in SA. People like you seriously get me irritated.
Annette: I don’t think it is such a bad idea. Could change the dynamics of the country considerably. Sandy Van Litsenborgh: Yes, sounds like a good idea, if you do not pay tax you cannot vote, that will put the shoe on the other foot very quickly! And while we are about it, if you are in arrears with elec, water etc you should not be allowed to vote either, that way we will have a fair playing field for all to participate JameZ: ANC running scared and paranoid and as ever playing the race card (yawn). If you are an SA citizen you should have the right to vote regardless of where you choose to live or work and pay income tax. Do we know if Xolani Xala pays the correct tax in SA? Now that might be a fantastic story! c’mon Xala show us your tax receipts. Chuck Norris: Wow, how quickly Xolani Xala has changed his spots. He was the same person who in 2008 was marching for South Africans to vote from abroad. Romano: I would please ask Mr Xala to read rules 7,9,10 and 11 of the ANC’s constitution. As the London Interim Branch of the ANC is not officially recognised by the constitution of the ANC they have no mandate to provide any memorandum to the ANC’s National Policy Conference for consideration. Andre: Romano – maybe you should take his job! ;) Muhammad: I second that motion! Karen G: I left SA after numerous criminal attacks and because the government despite taking 46% of my earnings did nothing to keep me and my family safe. Here I feel safe and have a better quality of life and for that reason I would rather lose the right to vote than give any more of my hard earned cash to the SA government who does nothing but squander it. Sioux: I’m completely confused by the DA comment at the end. They seem to have collapsed being registered SITE and PAYE payers with ‘paying tax’. VAT and fuel tax comprises 40% of SARS income and is paid by every person within our borders (and you could argue that company tax is also paid on the backs of all South Africans, whether they pay PAYE or SITE or not). Mark Richardson: In the spirit of enjoying life, ditch the banana republic passport and let them take the country backwards. I have read that all dual nationals will not have the right to vote either according to the youth league , they want solely South Africans to vote. Join the debate on www.thesouthafrican.com

The OPTIMIST KAREN DE VILLIERS
Assassin for hire? DESPITE all efforts to start my day with that sort of Sealy Posturpedic thing going on (you know the one where the beautifully manicured and made-up woman with the flowing, glossy hair goes from deep sleep to euphoric sitting up in an instant), it doesn’t take long to go crashing into my first cup of coffee. I blame the stupid people again. When they lock me up, the diagnosis will be ‘She tripped into the otherworld because of stupid people’. It’s a disease, a cancer spreading through the air filters; this insidious, brainless mass are going to prove my undoing. Like this morning. Perfect setting. Living right next to Wimbledon Tennis Courts, the happy buzz of tennis addicts sings a merry song of its own. Chatter and laughter. I watch them from my balcony, all lined up, patient as Job. Marshals are at the ready with impeccable English style. ‘Step this way madam’. You have to love this interaction and the ultimate sighs when the stadium is finally in sight. And then, oh bloody hell; I forget to turn the television off. The news is on. A yob is asking for jail time. Asking. The reason I believe is that the probation officer who has the hideous job of checking up on this ‘oxygen thief’ appears too early in the morning and wakes him up. He will ‘ave none of it. Somehow brainless idiot thinks

going to jail will be nothing more than endless sleep, with meals and drinks. Club Med a la Holloway. I say shoot him instead. By now the mood is deflating and worse, an episode of ‘Four Weddings’. Aaargh, stop me, but like watching someone wanting to commit suicide, the darkness in me cannot but stare in morbid fascination. It’s the Jeremy Kyle show in taffeta. The recipe is as follows: Take the fattest people you can find. Minus a few teeth and stain what’s left. Add the children born before the wedding (they need not be related to the groom). Throw in some black or pink hair dye and shave the rest. Into a Mohawk. This applies to both sexes. The piercings and tattoos are important. They must be everywhere - and we must know about the hidden locations. We live to know. Now assemble an assortment of chubby bridesmaids, motorbikes, carriages and tractors and find a venue that looks like a rented pile in the country. Any garish flowers and feathers on the table will do. Fare that was cooked for the millennium party. Cue the lecherous relative. But wait! It is more than a wedding. There are fireworks, clowns, strippers, burlesque dancers and whips. The couple sings karaoke and changes into domination outfits. Everyone gets very sweaty and totally pissed, I mean totally in your face pissed. I say shoot them and be done with it. They make a mockery of weddings and are beyond stupid. Finally have the stamina to turn off the television. Feeling a little queasy. Need to rescue the day. Banish stupid people and stupid telly. I need yoga, I need articulate people who read pink newspapers. Need to get into Centre Court for a spot of tennis – so need to get outside and join the queue. www.thesouthafrican.com/people

The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD
African whispers (and irresponsible reporting) LET me give you an example of how things can get out of hand. Last week, I attended a debate, organised by Google+ and held at The Barbican. The subject: hip-hop, and whether it degrades society. It was an entertaining, if slightly pointless evening, and the only real thing I took from it was that there are certain rappers who should be banned from speaking in public. At some point, a panellist made an offhand comment about Jewish executives in the music industry. The next day, on Twitter (@ robboffard if you’re taking notes) I made an offhand, tongue-in-cheek comment about how the debate taught me that Jewish industry figures are evil, and that we should stop them. So dumb. So very, very dumb. Within nanoseconds, I was being quoted as a source for evidence of “anti semitism” in the debate. Anyway, I mention this illuminating and somewhat embarrassing episode to demonstrate how stuff that goes
online can have completely unseen consequences. Earlier that day, I read a piece on the website of SA Promo Magazine headlined ‘Fear of civil war after “war talk”’. “Violence and public threats of war against Afrikaners, white farmers and white Englishspeaking South Africans by members or the ruling ANC party’s youth league,” said the piece, “has escalated considerably in recent weeks threatening to explode into civil war.” The piece was unbylined, and presented as a news piece. I know SA Promo is not exactly regarded as an impeccable source of hard news, but it does often have some good content. And it has 9,000 Twitter followers and nearly 15,000 Facebook likes, so it’s clearly popular. And now, it is telling those followers that a minor spat between Afriforum and a castrated ANC Youth League could turn into civil war. That, also, is so very, very dumb. There’s a little thing I like to call responsibility, and it’s something that SA Promo and its editors should learn. (For the record, attempts to contact the magazine for comment went unanswered). Civil war is the end point. It’s a brutal, bloody conflict which takes decades to recover from. If you’re going to suddenly claim that South Africa is on track to be involved in a civil war, then you’d better have bloody good sources. There is no evidence for this in SA Promo’s piece, which focuses heavily on the issue of land reoccupation on farms. Is there a major problem with farm murders in South Africa? Yes. Does the ANC Youth League never know when to shut up? Absolutely. Do Afriforum always, always muddy the waters? Of course. Does any of this point to an outbreak of civil war? Take a wild guess. And now imagine those 9,000 followers taking things a little too seriously. I’m not suggesting that Twitter followers can, in fact, incite civil war – although as events in Syria and Egypt have shown, they can certainly have an impact – but when you have an audience like that, irresponsible reporting has a much bigger impact than you.
Feldman’s new play explores being South African in London
How do people communicate over distance? And how did colonialism open up more distance between people while making the world a smaller place? These are the questions SA-born Nina Feldman asks in her new play
SOUTH African actress Nina Feldman has created a show for the performance festival, The Theatre of Great Britain, which runs at converted warehouse space The Yard in Hackney Wick from 3 to 28 July and explores what Britain means today. Feldman’s show Hands Across the Sea (3 – 7 July 9pm) explores colonialism and her experience of being a South African in London. How do people communicate over distance? And how did colonialism open up more distance between people while making the world a smaller place? These are the questions Feldman is asking 200 strangers by sending them each a postcard and asking them to contribute to her performance. These strangers are scattered around the globe, but they all live on streets named after Queen Victoria. Nina explains: “I have been commissioned to create a theatre piece for The Theatre of Great Britain festival. For this I aim to use the postcard and what it symbolises to explore the experiences of British colonialism, because I see this period of history as the ultimate moment of the Theatre of Great Britain. This is also the period when the postcard flourished, and was for so many people a connection between what they had left behind and what they were moving towards. In our current time of constant migration
South African performer Nina Feldman posts Hands over the Sea postcards to people all over the world who live on streets named after Queen Victoria.
I believe it is important to look at how we maintain contact with what we have left behind, and to ask questions about future connections that can be made. “The project is inspired by the Hands Across the Sea postcards of the early 20th century that were sent between Britain and her colonies in the thousands, with the purpose of maintaining a network. “The focus of my project is on using the postal system to create a network that explores ideas of connection and (post) colonialism today. I aim to establish relationships between myself and people throughout the British Commonwealth and have identified addresses in each country of the Commonwealth that uses the name of Queen Victoria, for example Victoria Street or Victoria Park. I sent postcards to a number of these addresses, asking for a postcard in return that discusses ideas of colonialism and (post)colonialism
and to open up a possible connection between us. “What will they write back? And how will I make this into a performance? As well as making a performance, this project will include an exhibition at The Yard Theatre of postcards and archive materials,” said Feldman. There are two different shows each evening, one at 7.30pm, the next at 9pm. Tickets are £6 or £10 for two shows in the same evening. List of other shows and tickets: www.theyardtheatre.co.uk

Lady Gaga is een van die grootste en mees kontroversiële popsterre ter wêreld.
“Don’t call my name; don’t call my name, Alejandro (God). I’m not your child, I’m not your child, Fernando (Jesus). Don’t call my name; don’t call my name, Roberto (Holy Spirit) Alejandro; Alejandro (God), Just let me go.”

By STAFF REPORTER HARD Rock International and Live Nation have announced that Hugh Masekela will join Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo on stage at London’s Hard Rock Calling on Sunday 15 July to perform the groundbreaking Graceland in its entirety, a UK first since 1987. 25 years ago Masekela put forth an idea to Simon to tour the Graceland album with an array of South African musicians, including Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and 10-man vocal team Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Now for the first time in a quarter of a century, Simon will be joined by original ‘Graceland’ musicians to bring the show back to UK at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park. World-pop masterpiece Graceland generated three hit singles, a five-year tour, two Grammy Awards and sales of over 14 million copies. Other South African artists participating in the reunion tour include Thandiswa Mazwai, Ray Phiri and Barney Rachabane. There will also be a special appearance by regaae star Jimmy Cliff. Tickets are priced from £50 on www. hardrockcalling.co.uk
Op haar webblad staan die volgende: “I am SO EXCITED to be bringing THE BORN THIS WAY BALL to South Africa. Stadium shows! Its a dream come true, you’ll have to show me around!” Ja, rondwys… Sy sal net nie met daai vleisrokkie so kan rondloop nie. Dis Afrika, daar’s leeus en baie baie honger mense.

IF you missed Isango Ensemble performing their version of the Shakespearean epic poem Venus and Adonis, or any of the other performances that make up part of the Globe to Globe festival this spring, don’t worry. A new arts endeavour aims to push boundaries and open up the artistic world by putting as huge a variety of resources as they can online, available globally until October. This includes all the plays shown during the Globe to Globe festival, chosen as a project because of the once-in-a-lifetime nature of the festival itself, and its obvious importance for an international audience. The Space will be releasing, recording or broadcasting live as many exclusive and previously unseen film, art, music and literary events as it can get its hands on. Don’t dump it – WWOMP it!
Two South Africans living in the UK have launched an innovative geolocation-based online classifieds service called the Worldwide Open Marketplace (WWOMP) TWO entrepreneurial Durbanites living in the UK have launched an innovative international classifieds marketplace that gives communities an easy way to connect, trade and share things for the price they want to pay. The Worldwide Open Marketplace (WWOMP) allows people in close proximity to get notifications from others who are either looking to offer their items, time or talents, or receive them. Once a suitable offer is found, the two parties agree and accept. Items requested and offered can be shared through social networks to attract wider interest. The service is completely free. WWOMP founders Baronne Mouton and Rob Schultz described the concept as ‘Community Commerce’. “The website was born out of the idea that so often you need something and you can spend hours trawling the web so we thought why not just list what you want/need and let the sellers come to you,” explained Mouton, a freelance IT consultant who came to the UK in 1996 and has lived in
Elite Sales Strategies: Upfront Contracting THREE INSIGHTS INTO:
Monmouth, Wales for the last 10 years. Co-founder Schultz, who recently left his job as a financial analyst at ITV to focus his energy on WWOMP, has lived in London for nine years. Mouton believes the ability to look around a familiar map interface and see what people have to offer around you is what sets WWOMP apart from other online classified sites. Using Google Maps geolocation technology, people within a local area can ask for practically any product or service in real time. They simply post a WWOMP for the specific product or service they need, want to sell, or wish to give away for free (similar to Freecycle) either online at wwomp.com or using the iPhone or Android mobile apps currently in development. “In big cities like Cape Town or London we don’t usually know who our neighbours are. Sometimes the people closest to us have a solution to our needs,” Mouton said. “It’s important to keep community trading alive in this day and age and we are
pleased to offer a service that encourages this kind of interaction. If people need their dog walked, they can WWOMP it, if people have the ability to teach a language to someone down the road, they can offer it on WWOMP.It’s a virtual people-powered community that builds real life relationships and easy trading and sharing with like-minded people, taking what already exists and using technology to do it better.” In terms of expanding WWOMP into a profitable project, Mouton said, “We have so many exciting developments on our roadmap, it’s as long as my arm! We’re keeping a close eye on the imminent explosion in digital wallets/mobile money and will look to partner with a service such as Square to process payments, delivering confidence and safer transactions for our users. We’ve also got some ideas for monetising on premium features for listings, but for now it’s a completely self-funded free service.” Details: wwomp.com

Expert tips for salespeople on successfully closing that deal
by Paul Harrison Closing the sale is one of the biggest stumbling blocks faced by sales people the world over. Paul Harrison asked Marcus Cauchi, London’s first licensed trainer of Sandler Training, to reveal one of the most powerful selling secrets: How to have your prospect surrender the order by agreeing in the beginning what will happen at the end of the meeting. This is known as “Upfront Contracting” TIP 1:“Closing a sale” results in resistance. Have the client close themselves instead. How? Always agree at the start, what will happen by the end. Decide what a good outcome for your meeting will look like. Ask a question in the first 2-3 minutes like, “Mrs Client, I’m not a mind reader so let me ask you straight up, what do you need to see, hear or have happen by the time we are done in an hour, for us to do business ( or move forward to a second meeting)?” TIP 2: No wishy-washy up front contracts …ever. Up front contracts must be clear,
Marcus Cauchi reveals one of the most powerful selling secrets.
specific and certain in their terms. “Paul, can we agree that assuming we tick all the boxes on your issues relating to not closing enough, not being in front of enough qualified decision makers consistently enough, and eliminating the pressure you and your salespeople feel to discount; assuming we get that far, is there any reason why you wouldn’t be comfortable setting aside 10 minutes at the end of our conversation to map out some clear next steps and define what has to happen for us to do business eventually?
TIP 3: Without the will to enforce an upfront contract it is almost useless. Make sure you revisit your upfront contract as you go and reiterate what you have agreed at the end about next steps so you can put a plan into action as to what happens next. No exceptions. Every interaction begins and ends with an upfront contract. And when you have to return to your earlier conversation, remind them of what you have mutually agreed and put the next steps into place with an agreed plan you are both part of making and putting into action.
Roger Williamson is a Londonbased South African who is building a team within Forever Living Products and is keen to close more business using Upfront Contracting.
Roger Williamson
Are there any downsides to Upfront Contracting? Fair question. No. But there’s a big downside to not doing them. Look back at the last ten proposals you’ve written. How many closed? How many ended in a “think it over” or “call me in a couple of weeks” and you’re still chasing them?
for money, authority and need. Then present our case (which is normally features and benefits based) then go for the close, then handle objections and finally send a proposal. Then wait a chase and wait and chase. Just because we’ve always done it that way doesn’t mean it isn’t incredibly stupid!
Isn’t it deemed very aggressive in the eyes of the prospective Why don’t more people use upfront contracting? Ignorance and fear. Most of us do what everyone else does and what we’ve always done. Habit tells us we should qualify

Indaba to tackle SA trade barriers
Delegates at the Infrastructure Africa event in Johannesburg will look at ways to unlock Africa’s growth potential as well as the need to develop infrastructure, which remains a major hindrance to doing business on the continent By STAFF REPORTER THE debate around barriers to South Africa’s regional trade growth is set to be a key topic at a pan-African business conference to be held this month in Johannesburg. Delegates at the Infrastructure Africa event are to look at ways to unlock Africa’s growth potential as well as the need to develop infrastructure, which remains a major hindrance to doing business on the continent. A recent study has highlighted the challenges South Africa faces in terms of trade. The Doing Business 2012 report from the World Bank positions SA at number 144 out of 183 economies as far as trading across borders is concerned, looking at aspects like procedures required for exporting and importing goods. It takes
about 30 days for South Africa, compared to 11 for Mauritius. Critics say factors such as bureaucracy and high tariffs are hampering South Africa’s economic integration with the rest of Africa. Shadow trade and industry minister Dr Wilmot James recently discussed challenges to doing business in South Africa, and told Gateway to Africa that there is a need to break down the trade barriers on the continent. “Excessive red tape, for example, imposes onerous regulatory burdens on firms, which means that businesses have to go through lots of unnecessary steps before they can get their goods to market,” the Democratic Alliance Growth Diagnostic document reads. “High tariffs make importing
and exporting goods into and out of South Africa costly and uncompetitive. Infrastructure constraints and administrative incompetence, moreover, adds to the time it takes to bring goods in and out of the country,” it explains. Potential competitors on the continent, such as Mauritius, are doing the opposite by finding innovative ways to make crossborder trade cheaper, simpler and faster, the document explains. Every year African countries are reportedly losing out on billions of dollars in potential trade earnings because of high trade barriers with neighbouring countries, according to a separate World Bank report. The report, entitled “DeFragmenting Africa: Deepening Regional Trade Integration in Goods and Services,” says regional fragmentation could become even
more costly for the continent, with forecasts suggesting that the eurozone economic slowdown could shave 1.3 percentage points off Africa’s growth this year. The conference, is being organised by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) Business Foundation (NBF), which acts as a facilitator between private sector businesses, civil society and government. NBF’s Lynette Chen says, “We are very excited about what is happening in Africa as we are
in the process of unlocking the potential. Plans that have been on the drawing board for decades are now being turned into bricks and mortar. “As an example take the Kazungula bridge over the Zambezi, where the four countries of Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe meet. That crossing has been served by a ferry for ages, but now a tender to construct a bridge has been awarded and pre-construction earthworks are taking place.”
FACTORS HINDERING CROSS-BORDER TRADE In Eastern and Southern Africa, goods are transported through 10 major corridors, namely: Northern, North– South; Dar Central; Dar es Salaam; Nacala,; Beira; Maputo; Trans Kalahari; Trans Kaprivi and Trans Cunene. Here are some of the challenges: • T rucks have to negotiate 47 roadblocks and weigh stations between Kigali (Rwanda) and Mombasa (Kenya) • T he vehicles have to wait 36 hours at the Beitbridge border post between South Africa Zimbabwe. •F actors such as the inefficiency of border procedures are “overwhelmingly costly” to traders.
High tariffs make importing and exporting goods into and out of South Africa costly and uncompetitive.

By IRENE MADONGO WHY did you come to London? I fell in love with an Englishman. I got married in 2004. There was never any intention to live here permanently – we were going to spend time between SA and the UK. What are the advantages of being based here? I get an international perspective of SA, especially among the African diaspora. They look to SA as a kind of model for post-conflict reconstruction and one can also build much-needed relationships of trust in London after the xenophobic attacks. Africans here in the diaspora said they only saw white South Africans – where were the black ones who they could do business with in terms of economic investments for the continent? So I started networking across racial divides to diversify our networks. What are the challenges of living here? Institutional racism – which is widely acknowledged in British society since the inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence and the resulting Macpherson report. These race issues (such as stop and search) are still present and thankfully are currently being tackled within the Metropolitan Police in Britain. What excites you about your current role at Brand South Africa? I network and market South Africa with a diverse range of people interested in our country: those
interested in capital investment, those who want to establish knowledge partnerships or share best practice in health, agricultural development, culture, education, technology and engineering. It’s an amazing time for SA in terms of global opportunities for trade and growth and to tackle youth unemployment through innovative strategies. What do SA businesses offer the world and investors? Showcasing innovation through investment in the second economy, using the vast human capital located in rural and impoverished areas. SA is a powerhouse on the African continent, with major ports for trade and vast, diverse human capital and a significant youthful workforce, blessed by the best financial management and corporate governance systems in the world. You were a judge at the inaugural European Diversity Awards in London last year, assessing the equality progress of international corporates like Barclays. How do policies in such firms compete with SA companies? SA has a policy of broad-based black economic empowerment as grounded within our Constitution to redress an unjust past. In the UK, the equality duties are part of legal compliance within an international human rights framework. Leading corporates in the UK address equality issues as core business; talent is recruited

and retained. Black women are mentored into economically powerful positions. Research shows these companies outperform others as they respond to the realities of global markets. Celebrities you have met include the Queen, Princess Anne, Ben Okri, Amy Winehouse, Kanya King, David Harewood (Blood Diamond), Ainslie Harriott and Annie Lennox. What was the Queen like? That was in November 2007 at a reception at Buckingham Palace. I met her and Prince Phillip. She asked me about my work on the London, Sugar and Slavery gallery. I said, ‘Well ma’am, it’s a difficult story, but I am helping to tell the

story based on my experience with the anti-apartheid struggle.’ She said that was interesting and told me about her memorable visit to SA in 1947. I was invited again when President Zuma visited Buckingham Palace in 2010 and she said to me, ‘Yes, you are with the museums.’ So she has a good memory. I got compliments from Princess Anne for an international project I set up for Save the Children. I also worked closely with British film director John Irvin of the BBC’s acclaimed Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. What is your next move? To be recruited for a challenging position that will take me home to be of service to South Africa.

Charley Boorman heads off on ‘extreme’
BIKE TRIP through SA
Charley Boorman is back for another series of Extreme Frontiers, and this time South Africa is his destination. So what does he think is in store?
by NICOLE HOLGATE CHARLEY Boorman, of Long Way Down and Long Way Round, will be getting back on his bike for Extreme Frontiers, in which he explores the wildest and most remote areas possible in a dedicated trip across South Africa. A press launch was held at Cannizaro House in Wimbledon last week to send him and Russ Malkin, producer of his previous TV series, on their way. Starting in Cape Town, Charley and Russ will traverse the Western Cape by motorbike over six weeks. This will be the third time he has traveled across South Africa, and he will also be running a trip later in the year from Cape Town to Victoria Falls, for a group of around fifty bikers . Extreme Frontiers began in Canada last year, and this year Charley continues a self-described ‘love affair’ with Africa. He says “a lot of people gasp and say it’s a dodgy place, and it’s not really”. In fact he feels that South Africa is obvious choice for a series as you don’t have to go far out of a populated area to be right in the wilderness, and you are spoilt for choice in terms of spectacular and interesting scenery. The route, he says, was mainly decided by what they wanted to do, but it helps that “everywhere you look is pretty awesome: you just stick the camera on a pair of legs.” Working with UK Manager of
South African Tourism Lungi Morrison, their journey will showcase the variety of travel activities available in South Africa. It stemmed from the speed with which Charley took on his previous trips: this time they wanted to slow it right down and explore. “There’s a great opportunity to show off the country and the fun wild things you can do, from shark diving to going to see the Big Five.” They will also be visiting Mandela’s birthplace, climbing Table Mountain, hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains and paramotoring down the Limpopo river. Of all the wild situations they will face, the only thing Charley admits to being nervous about is shark diving. They are also going to be investigating the rhino poaching trade. But he says the most dangerous aspect of the whole journey are the huge and heavy bikes themselves: “When you’re standing still they fall over!” The choice of using a motorbike is a very personal one, says Charley, who has been riding since the age of seven, when his father’s work in the film industry led to a very on-the-road lifestyle. “People’s reactions to you are very different. You are part of the environment: if it’s raining you’re wet, if its dusty you’re dusty. And
people react differently – I think they feel sorry for you! They’re clearly thinking ‘Why is he doing this?’ “There’s a freedom about it, and there’s a sense of world community about motorcycles. Where-ever you go in the world, someone will come up and say ‘I ride a bike’.” Even the apparently dangerous driving habits of South Africans are dismissed by Charley as largely a myth. In fact “the worst place I’ve ever been in any kind of traffic is Egypt. You were going down motorways with people coming up the fast lane in the wrong direction!” For those keen to head off on their own biking adventures, Charley’s main piece of advice is to give yourself enough time. “Really do your research and figure out what you want to do, and give yourself enough time”, in case you end up on an adventure you weren’t expecting! Extreme Frontiers: South Africa will airing towards the end of 2012 in a four-part series for Channel 5, and will also be released as an interactive kindle chapter by chapter whilst Charley is on location. To keep up with his South African journey in real time, follow the website at www. extremefrontiers.co.uk and twitter @extremefrontier

Zimbabwe Community Kirsty Coventry has her eyes on the gold Kirsty Coventry doesn’t feel her record breaking days are behind her, as she prepares to scoop more Olympic medals
Zimbabweans happier than South Africans
SOUTH Africa has ranked a sad 142nd out of 151 countries on the 2012 Happy Planet Index, which measures the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for their citizens. The index uses global data on life expectancy, experienced well-being and Ecological Footprint to calculate this. Topping the happiness index is Costa Rica, followed by Vietnam and Colombia, while Botswana ranked last out of 151 nations. While still low down on the scale, Zimbabweans appear to be happier than South Africans, with their ranking of 115th position. However, the United States is not much happier, ranked at 105th.
The UK is 41st, Germany 46th and France 50th. Nic Marks of the New Economics Foundation, the creator of the index, said, “For too long we have relied on incomplete measures of progress that focus only on economic activity, such as gross domestic product. Rich and poor nations face different challenges, but their ultimate goal is the same,” he said. Foundation senior researcher Saamah Abdalla said countries such as Costa Rica outranked the UK because their inhabitants live long and happy lives using a fraction of the planet’s resources. “They point towards a development model that can achieve healthy, happy and sustainable lives.”
By NICOLE HOLGATE ZIMBABWE’S swimming sensation Kirsty Coventry has earned her place in the annals of sporting history, and she isn’t finished yet. The 28-year-old seven-time Olympic medalist last raced competitively at the US Swimming Sectionals held in College Station, Texas, her current training base ahead of the Olympics in May. She is now gearing up for the EDF Swimming Open in France, from 6 July. She will continue to the London Olympics, where she is expected to compete in the 100m backstroke, the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley. She was described by Paul Chingoka, head of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, as “our national treasure”. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has called her “a golden girl,” and rather awkwardly awarded her US$100,000 in cash for her 2008 Olympic performance. She has been criticised for not using her status to condemn him more openly. While still at high school, Coventry was named Zimbabwe’s Sports Woman of the Year after becoming the first Zimbabwean swimmer to reach the semi-finals at the Olympics. She was first coached by a local butcher and his wife. In 2001 she moved to the States to study at Auburn University, where she was coached by Kim Brackin, who led her to back-to-back medals. In 2008 she broke her first world record in the 200m backstroke at the Missouri Grand Prix. Her second world record was at the 2008 Manchester Short Course world Championships, winning the gold in the 400m Individual Medley. The next day she won another gold in the 100m backstroke, creating the second fastest time in the history of the event. Her websiote lists a full string of the World Records she possesses. However her place at the Olympics was rocked at the end of March when she dislocated her kneecap while on a training run. She was only able to continue training
with a buoy strapped to her legs, although the injury luckily didn’t chip any ligaments or bones. She told The Telegraph, “I was really scared when this happened. It has happened before, but never this close to the Olympics. I remain positive that I can get back on track for the Games soon after my knee is strong again. After being on crutches for a while she has recovered well enough for the EDF, and looks forward with a mixture of competitive spirit and philosophical awareness to competing against swimmers up to a decade younger than herself in London. “In athletics, older runners tend to go for longer races, but it’s the opposite in swimming because your body can’t handle the endurance. I will have to be more open to focusing on the shorter events and just be comfortable with that.”
Name: Kirsty Coventry Born: 16 Dec 1983 From: Harare, Zimbabwe Studied at: Auburn University, Alabama, US Discipline: Swimming – Backstroke, individual medley, 100, 200 and 400 meters. Medal count: 34 in total… Most famously gold, silver, bronze in 2004 Athens Olympics, gold and three silvers in 2008 Beijing Olympics

TEAM SA @ THE OLYMPICS Kate Roberts| Triathlete
By RONEL VAN ZYL SOUTH African triathlete Kate Roberts has just been named one of the Mail & Guardian’s top 200 young South Africans. I caught up with her via e-mail while she was training in Switzerland. What exactly does triathlon entail? A triathlon comprises of a 1,500m swim, followed by a 40km cycle and finally a 10km run. This is all done with no breaks between segments. How did you start in this sport and why is it such a passion? I was introduced to triathlon at the age of 16. Before that I competed in athletics, biathlon, hockey, tennis, swimming and cross country. I believe triathlon is the ultimate endurance event for the ‘complete athlete’. How does your training programme look for the next few weeks? I am on my final training camp in Davos, Switzerland in the lead-up to the big dance on 4 August. I’m training with five women (who will all represent their respective countries; Sweden, Germany, Great Britain and USA, at the Olympic triathlon) under the watchful eye of our Australian coach Dr Darren Smith. We have chosen Davos because other than the amazing scenery we have been here before and know the training environment well. Davos is
1,550m above sea level, so is great for our increased red blood cell mass and haemoglobin but is also an isolated ski town and allows us to completely focus on the task at hand and limit outside distractions. In July I will do two sprint races (French Grand Prix in Paris and World Triathlon series in Hamburg) to prepare for the big day on 4 August. When will you arrive in the UK? I plan to stay in Davos until four days prior to the Olympics and will then leave for London to familiarise myself with the course in the few days before the race. How did you feel on 7 June when they announced the team? I have been in love with the Olympics ever since I was nine and my childhood dream has always been to represent SA at an Olympic Games. For an ITU triathlete, the Olympics are the pinnacle of our sport and the ultimate test of our worth. So when I was selected to represent my beloved South Africa at my second Olympics, I was incredibly proud to be part of the team. I cannot wait to compete and make myself, my family, friends, my coach and South Africans proud of me! Who will be supporting you on the day? My whole family and close friends will be among the Hyde Park fans at 9am on 4 August. My twin sister Tessa never for once doubted that I was not going to make the team and she already booked her flight to London in October. Needless to say I had a bit of pressure to make sure I made the team. My coach will also be there, whose five athletes he coaches will make up an eleventh of the 55 athletes
on the starting line. My training partners we will be rivals on race day, but we have been supporting one another over the past four years. Training with them is part of the amazing journey in the lead up to the Games. How can South Africans support you during the Olympics? For those who will be in Hyde Park (entrance is free on the day) I would really appreciate some deafening cheers of “Hou Bene Hou” and “Go Kate Go” and maybe even a “Go Vrystaat!” That would make me very happy indeed and I am positive will encourage me closer towards that medal chance. For those watching at home, I am sure if they cheer really loudly I will be able to hear them too. I can promise everyone I am going to give my absolute best on the day and will fight until the end because it is never over until I cross that finish line. Your biggest sporting achievement thus far? Representing SA at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and 2008 Beijing Olympics, my selection for the London Olympics, being ranked seventh in the world in 2010 and my three African triathlon titles. Plans after London 2012? The past four years of my life have been completely dedicated to the Olympics, so after my race on 4 August I first of all plan to have a well-deserved break. Thereafter, I may decide to race at home in the BSG Triathlon Series from October to December. I do however want to set new goals for myself outside the sport of triathlon. Being involved in charitable work and developing
young female triathletes are goals that spring to mind. I love sport, I love to cook, I love animals, I love children, I love South Africa. I want to save the world so the question is what can I do to combine all those things? At the end of the day, I aim to do what makes me happy and live without regrets. Life postLondon Olympics is still a work in progress, so watch this space.
Some Kate facts:
My dad loves my homemade meatballs and my older brother Gareth reckons I make the best peppermint crisp tart. The best advice I have ever received is that I am the master of my own destiny. Philosophy I live by is that my attitude will determine my altitude.
Sascoc boss to resign if SA does badly at Olympics SOUTH African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Gideon Sam has promised to he will resign if Team South Africa performs poorly at the London Olympics. Sascoc set a goal of 12 medals this year after South Africa’s dismal performance at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, returning with just one silver medal won by long jumper Khotso Mokoena. This was the country’s worst result since 1936. Should Team South Africa fail to achieve 12 medals, Sam said it would not be in the interests of South African sport for him to remain in his position. “If it doesn’t work after all the effort we have put in, why would
you want to carry on?… It does not sit well with me,” Sam told the Mail & Guardian. “If you are a leader you have to take the knock. It’s all well and good to duck and dive but in the final analysis: who is blamed when the country doesn’t go right? You blame the president. In that same way, I must be blamed if things don’t go right.” Sam said Team South Africa would be going “all out” to ensure they returned with a stash of medals. “This time we are really going to throw the dice. Every single person who is there is a medal contender. We are going in there to do not only our best but excel because South Africa deserves nothing less.”

by STAFF REPORTER THE Governing Council of the Champions’ League has decided that South Africa will host the 2012 edition of the world’s leading tournament of its type. The decision was confirmed by Cricket South Africa acting CEO Jacques Faul. The tournament will take place in the second half of October immediately after the conclusion of the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. CSA will be represented in the tournament by the MiWay T20 Challenge winners, the Nashua Titans, as well as by the bizhub Highveld Lions who finished top of the round robin log. The venues and fixtures will be announced in due course once CSA has had the necessary discussions with the prospective hosting affiliates. CSA previously hosted the tournament, which is now in its fourth year, in 2009 with the other two editions being played in India. “This is very exciting news for South African cricket,” commented Faul. “It once again underlines the faith the international cricket community has in CSA to organise major international events and also adds tremendous value to the package our various sponsors and affiliates are able to offer the fans in their regions. “The financial benefits for the game in this country are also substantial and we look forward to welcoming some of the best players from around the world to our country once again.” Pakistan will be represented at this tournament for the first time by the Sialkot Stallions and other confirmed participants from abroad are: Indian Premier League: Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians Australia: Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers New Zealand: Auckland Aces West Indies: Trinidad & Tobago The representatives from England and Sri Lanka have still to be decided as England’s domestic tournament is currently under way and Sri Lanka will hold theirs next month.
FOODBANK South Africa are proud to announce a fundraising cycle tour from Hoek van Holland to Brussels over three days, starting 31 August 2012. All profits will go to FoodBank South Africa to help end hunger and malnutrition in South Africa.

IGESUND GETS BAFANA TOP JOB
New coach Gordon Igesund to lead Bafana Bafana to AfCon glory By STAFF REPORTER GORDON Igesund was announced as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana on Saturday, after a meeting of the National Executive committee of Safa. The “Godfather” of South African domestic football beat fellow stand-in coach Steve Komphela to the top job after Safa’s sacking of Pitso Mosimane last month. The 55-year-old Igesund was awarded the role after overachieving in the league with his team Moroka Swallows, finishing second behind Orlando Pirates in the 2011\2012 season. Capping off the excellent season with the Birds, Igesund was awarded the PSL coach of the season award for the second time in his managerial career, following his success in 2007 with Sundowns. SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani handed Igesund a two-year contract with a mandate of making at least the semifinals at next year’s African Cup of Nations (AfCon) tournament - being played in South Africa - as well as qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Igesund’s job will be an extremely difficult one. Although targets are being set
high, the Safa president appealed to the media and the public to give support and not to judge the new coach on the upcoming away matches against Poland and Brazil. “The bigger picture is the 2013 Afcon and qualifying us for Brazil in 2014” Igesund has been touted for the top jobs many times before and is one of South Africa’s most successful coaches in domestic terms. He has coached nine different teams and in 2007, became the only coach to win the league four times with four different teams. Igesund thanked Safa for the faith they had shown in his appointment. “I feel very honoured and privileged to be in charge of an asset like the national football team,” Igesund said. “All I can say to you all is that I’m going to do my very best to make us all proud.”
