HAPPY BIRTHDAY TATA MADIBA! Five ways to celebrate Mandela Day in the UK

W

by STAFF REPORTER

hen Nelson Mandela turns 94 on Wednesday 18 July there will be celebrations all over the world. His birthday has become the focus of efforts to improve humanity, one step at a time. Now in its fifth year, Nelson Mandela International Day was inspired by Mandela’s address in London on 27 June 2008 when he purposely misread his speech to say “it is in your hands now” instead of “it is in our hands now”. A year later 18 July was formally recognised by the United Nations as a global day of celebration and motivation for doing good. Do you want to give some time to a project? Here are a few ways you can celebrate on Wednesday! 1. Pledge 67 minutes Blue Dot are working with The Elders and Nelson Mandela Foundation to compile a book of pledges. They want as many people as possible to pledge 67 minutes of their time in recognition of Mandela’s 67 years fighting for human rights. The book, supported by the UN and celebrities as diverse as Lewis Hamilton, Desmond Tutu and Jamie Oliver, will be presented to

the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Add your pledge at www. mandeladaypledge.org

2. FoodBank – make a real difference with just £5 FoodBank is running a text message campaign asking people to donate £5. It costs FoodBank only £6.25 to provide food for one person for a month. A single text donating £5 will, therefore, make a significant difference. You can contribute simply by texting ‘MAND12 £5’ to 70070. In return they will send you 67 facts about FoodBank and hunger in SA. FoodBank coordinates national food distribution in SA to over 1,600 community-based organisations. Its Food Rescue Programme sources food from supermarkets to feed more than 377, 000 and saves tonnes of

food from landfill. Their Food Procurement Programme buys staple foods, negotiating discounts on food supplements to enhance the nutrition of food

parcels. Details: www.foodbank. org.za

3. Spur Madiba Meal On Thursday 19 July at 7pm, Spur Steak & Grill will hand over a donation cheque to ex-Saracens prop Cobus Visagie, Janet Broadhurst of FoodBank, and other Trustees, at their Wandsworth branch. All FoodBank supporters are welcome. 4. Beaks’ Three Peaks Within 24 hours, on Mandela Day, Mark Beacon intends to climb to the summits of Ben Nevis, Snowden ...continued on page 3
