MALEMA “TALKS TO LONDON INVESTORS” Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu in London, allegedly to woo British business

by STAFF REPORTER

F

ormer ANC Youth League president Julius Malema and suspended league spokesman Floyd Shivambu have arrived in London, according to The New Age. Malema has twice cancelled this trip to the UK. The pair are allegedly here to speak to British investors to persuade them to invest in South Africa, SABC news reported on Saturday. Malema’s controversial stance on nationalisation of mines and expropriation of land without compensation are likely to result in grilling from British business people. On Sunday a Twitter user posted a photo of Malema, Shivambu and their entourage watching the Olympics at what appears to be a

pub in London (below). However, this morning the image and tweet had been removed by the user. According to The Citizen, political analyst Ralph Mathekga described Malema’s visit to London as a publicity stunt. “It is a publicity stunt by Malema and his cronies because they are not getting media attention in South Africa. They are trying to bring themselves into favour with businessmen. I don’t know how they will be received because they are not proponents of foreign direct investment. All their policy proposals within the ANCYL are scaring investors,” Mathekga said. It is believed that Malema will be addressing a public meeting in London on Tuesday 31 July – watch our website for further details.

musical sensibility. Having done his time in London developing the distinct sound and lyrics of his band, he recently returned to Cape Town. Having featured Maxi Jazz on their latest single, they deliver honest beats—although there are diverse influences, including hip-hop and electro, the result is sufficiently distinctive and edgy to evoke a sense of being unique, avoiding tired genre labels. Theirs is a contemporary African sound with universal appeal, and the muscle to unite divergent tastes. It’s revolutionary music geared to ignite dance-floors while exploding our thinking. They will also be perfoming at Standon Calling festival in Hertfordshire on Sunday 5 August.

THE Ekhaya Hospitality Centre, a home away from home for South African athletes, fans and friends for the duration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, opened at London’s Southbank Centre on Thursday, with a packed programme of entertainment on offer. Ekhaya is being run by a number of national government departments – Sport and Recreation, Arts and Culture, Trade and Industry, International Relations and Co-operation, and Tourism – in partnership with South African Tourism and Brand South Africa. The centre was opened by South African Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula, after a performance by Vusi Mahlasela. Mbalula announced a starstudded entertainment lineup for the centre, headed up traditional dance programme Dance Africa Dance and including the likes of The Parlotones, Thandiswa Mazwai, Afrika Mamas, Flash Republic, The Indigenous, and Natalia Molebatsi. According to Noluthando Ngendane, Brand South Africa’s public relations officer, Ekhaya “has been created as a base for Team South Africa, its sportsmen and women, their friends and families and, of course, their supporters to gather. It is a place where the spirit of South Africa comes alive.” The centre will be open from 8am daily, with facilities including wi-fi and internet connectivity, meeting rooms, a media and business centre, a business lounge, function facilities, full coverage of all sports events, and a South African bar. Ekhaya’s programme features a cultural exhibition, Olympic events broadcast on big screens; meetings for London-based local businesses to network; and celebratory events for Team SA. Ngendane said, “South African businessmen and women can use the facilities to network and showcase the success stories of our beautiful country to visitors from abroad and the rest of Africa.” South Africans at home and abroad are encouraged to wear their supporters T-shirts on Fridays to show their support for Team SA. Ekhaya Centre is at Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre, Belvedere Road, London. It will be open for the Olympics from 26 July to 12 August and for the Paralympics from 28 August to 9 September. See an updated list of entertainment events at www. thesouthafrican.com

The Honeymoon Murder case is set to resume in the UK on Tuesday

THE case of the honeymoon murder is set to continue this week as the announcement that Shrien Dewani, the husband accused of plotting the murder of his wife Anni on their honeymoon in South Africa in 2010 will resume his extradition trial on Tuesday 31 July. Dewani was allowed to stay in the UK earlier this year after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress, but it looks like he may finally be able to stand trial in South Africa in the near future following his return to court next week. Speaking to the Cape Times, Anni’s Uncle Ashok Hindocha stated on behalf of the

29/03/2012 14:14

family,“We’d like to know what happened to Anni. In November it will be two years. We have no answers yet, only questions,” It is clear that the family are under a lot of stress because of the ongoing court proceedings but still feel lost as to what actually happened to the newlywed bride. In addition to the news on Dewani, South African National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said that the trial of the accused hitmen, Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, who were set to go on trial in the Western Cape High Court on Monday, has been postponed for at least two weeks. The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD

Brand this

NOBODY seems to know who put it up. Or where it is. One day, it was just there, blatant and unafraid and blowing one mother of a raspberry at the Olympic Local Organising Committee. The text of this particular billboard is too lengthy to quote, but in essence it printed all the words business are banned from using - London, 2012, Olympics, Gold Medal and the like - and then said: what are you going to do about it? I have to sympathise. Of all the indignities the Olympics visit on London, none is so pointless, so mean-spirited or so uncaring as the brand guidelines of the Olympic organisation. They use these to protect their sponsors, meaning that no company or individual can use certain words, phrases or images in commercial material. That might sound OK in practice - we do, after all have copyright law for a reason. But the way it’s being applied makes me want to gibber in astonishment. Olympic brand censors have cracked down on a granny for knitting Olympic dolls at a school fete. They have insisted that the Cafe Olympic in Stratford - a four-year-old business - rename itself the Cafe Lympic (because obviously nobody will make that particular association). In fairness, there is every possibility that the founders of the Cafe saw the coming thing, but the response to the renaming debacle is: who gives a toss what it’s called? And if you wear a t-shirt with a non-Olympic sponsor on it to an event, you will be shot. I am not, in principle, against Olympic sponsors. I understand the money has to come from somewhere, and better some corporation dig deeper than the

people of London have to. But to go about the brand policing in this manner doesn’t make me want to use these brands. Quite the opposite. Every time I see a pair of Adidas Kicks, all I’m going to remember is how they were part of some nasty branding exercise. Same with Coke. I don’t eat McDonalds

to begin with, but now I can add “deeply dubious censors” to my list of unpleasant word associations with that company. And the Olympics themselves? All I’m seeing is a big, fat, deeply ugly corporation who doesn’t care what it tramples on. With their overly aggressive branding, the Olympics have just left me

wishing they were dead and gone. I don’t even need to mention the horrendous Olympic font. Or the deeply creepy mascots - both of whom look like they’re sizing up the puny humans for the braai. Or the logo that looks exactly like Lisa Simpson giving Bart a blowjob. Whoever is responsible for the

Olympic branding, and whoever decided that the copyright would be backed up by brand blitzkrieg, I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infest your groin for eternity. That being said, I do love Channel 4’s Paralympics advert. Because Public Enemy as a soundtrack makes everything better.

Be sure to catch Freshlyground at the Jazz Cafe for a taste of home. The seven-piece band will perform in Camden on Wednesday 1 August as part of their 10-year anniversary tour.

Doo Bee Doo! Freshlyground hits London! After 10 years of making music, Freshlyground will make a rare appearance in London on 1 August at the Jazz Cafe

by STAFF REPORTER CAN you believe it’s been 10 years since South Africa’s Freshlyground was formed? In celebration of this milestone, the band has embarked on an international tour, with a rare appearance in London on Wednesday 1 August. Freshlyground formed in early 2002, and is made up of seven talented musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Freshlyground’s musical style blends elements of traditional SA music such as kwela, with blues, jazz, and indie rock. Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, the

band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) and Josh Hawks (bass) is complimented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith. Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band’s members weave a musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy. Freshlyground launched their debut album Jika Jika in

early 2003, followed by Nomvula in July 2004. Their catchy single ‘Doo Be Doo’ went on to become a crossover favorite and the most played song in SA in 2005. The album sold 300,000 units, earning it multi-platinum status. Nomvula was followed in September 2007 by Ma Cheri – Freshlyground’s multi-platinum

selling third album. In February 2010 the band put the finishing touches to their fourth studio album Radio Africa in New York and was selected to co-perform the official song for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. ‘Waka Waka – This Time For Africa’ was a collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira. Freshlyground performed Waka Waka at the Kickoff Concert and World Cup Final which was broadcast to over a billion people. ‘Waka Waka’ sold more than three million singles and reached number one on several charts worldwide.

A few months later, Freshlyground’s song ‘Chicken to Change’, which urged Robert Mugabe to step down as president of Zimbabwe, caused a stir when it resulted in them being refused visas to perform there. Freshlyground has won seven Samas and done sold-out tours in SA, Europe, China, the USA and Canada. They will be releasing their fifth studio album in September 2012. The band will be performing at the Jazz Cafe in Camden on 1 August and possibly the following night if the first show sells out. Tickets start at £22.50 on Ticketmaster.co.uk

SA photographers capture Olympic legacy Two South African photographers are currently exhibing at the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Road to 2012: Aiming High’

by STAFF REPORTER TWO out of the three photographers exhibiting in the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition ‘Road to 2012: Aiming High’, are South African. London-based expats Jillian Edelstein and Nadav Kander, together with the British team of Anderson & Low, have followed the final stages on the journey to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with their portraits of people who are creating a lasting legacy. This exhibition showcasing selected images from all the project photographers opened on 19 July and runs until 23 September. Edelstein was born and grew up in Cape Town and began working as a press photographer in Johannesburg on the Rand Daily Mail and the Star. In 1985 she emigrated to London to study at the London College of Printing. Her portraits have appeared in publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair and Vogue. Between 1996 and 2002 she returned to South Africa frequently to document the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Her award-winning book Truth and Lies, shot in large format, was published by Granta in 2002. Kander was born in Israel and moved to South Africa with his parents when he was two. He began taking pictures at the age of 13 on a Pentax camera and later, when drafted into the South African Air Force, worked

in a darkroom printing aerial photographs. He moved to London in 1986, where he still resides with his wife and their three children. The National Portrait Gallery/ BT Road to 2012 project has captured the journey towards the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and, working with internationally renowned photographers, has created a lasting record of the people who are contributing to these events. From world-class athletes and those working behind the scenes, to people living and working in the host boroughs for the 2012 Games,

the project celebrates stories of inspirational achievement. ‘Road to 2012: Setting Out’, the first year of the project, saw photographers Brian Griffin and Bettina von Zwehl capture athletes and inspirational figures involved at the start of the journey towards London 2012.

‘For Road to 2012: Changing Pace’, the second year of the project, photographic portraits were created by Emma Hardy and Finlay MacKay. A few paces away in the gallery is a massive photorealistic portrait of British Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes,

painted by the Zimbabwean artist Craig Wylie. This painting was commissioned as part of the First Prize in the BP Portrait Award competition at the Gallery in 2008. Wylie, who has lived in London since 1998, studied Fine Art at Rhodes University in South Africa. Details: www.npg.org.uk

further 5 minutes. • Turn the heat up and begin to add the chicken livers, cook for a further 5 minutes. • The chicken livers should be browned on the outside whilst still pink and moist in the middle. • Add the brandy along with the cream and cook for a further 2 minutes until the cream begins to bubble. • Transfer the mixture to a blender and along with the remaining butter; begin to blend until smooth, check for seasoning. • Once smooth transfer to a clean bowl and fold in the chopped parsley.

• Transfer to individual ramekins and set in the fridge. • If required, top with a bit more melted butter and garnish with a bay leaf. Downloading my guilt...

I COULD be one of those people who simply take unpleasant issues and put them in a folder somewhere. A ‘To get to’ folder. When it comes to South Africa I am a beauty at it. Living in London, my idea of South Africa is all about the sunny skies, the outdoors, al fresco living – you get the message. Filtered images with warm fuzzy feelings. Edit out the real stuff. Reality bites moments go to the trash pile. Have just landed in Cape Town under grey skies, knowing my trenchcoat will not suffice. I am shivering in the customs cue. But Cape Town airport is as slick as hot chocolate spilling over the cup. I am out of there in more than record time, almost a little peeved I have nothing to complain about – no ‘the fat official was chatting on her phone, eating a doughnut.’ A professional finish to a typical, God-awful flight with snotty passenger spewing germs my way. Didn’t take long on the highway from the airport for the ‘guilt’ folder to begin downloading in my mind – uncommanded. Khayelitsha was standing in pools of water, tin houses nothing more than sieves, utterly vulnerable against the weather. How does anyone stay dry or warm? Drenched dogs wander aimlessly, rubbish melts and smears itself along the ground. Mentally I hit the pause button – it is too early to go down that road, let me at least

Driving on the highway from Cape Town airport and seeing the poverty of Khayelitsha opened Karen’s ‘guilt folder’ again. Photo by Elyob.

be happy to be back. A blind man is begging at the traffic lights with a thin plastic poncho for protection. Little protection as he is soaked to the bone. Will seeing beggars in sunlight somehow ease the guilt? The first of my coins reach out of the window. And so it begins again. I have forgotten the peppered pockmarks of poverty and need that ‘crayoncolour’ the outlines of this colourful country. Outreached hands at traffic lights, avenues lined with the unemployed. Children in rags, scraps of dignity left in the dust. Back into download mode. I need the sun now. Somehow life seems less grim in sunlight. The car guards at the mall resemble dripping spectres that kindle this unwelcome guilt again. I cannot help it – I feel too privileged, too comfortable here; shopping and lunching with friends. More coins

for the car guards, hefty tips for the sullen waitress who I believe has a thousand faces to feed. Been here a few hours and already feel weary. The child asks for a sandwich, another for a few cents to spare. Grown men with placards offering to wash my windscreen in the rain. Can only imagine how tourists must feel when they first encounter the un-everything. Ah she sighs; this is no good at all! Will muster the strength to see the positive and remember the beauty – banish the guilt back to dropbox. Life in South Africa is not only the tired, the hungry and the poor masses I see – maybe it’s jet lag, infected with the flu, the rain, the grey… and those endless rows of tin shacks. Could one ever not feel guilty seeing that? Tomorrow will be sunny they say. Perhaps I can delete this folder and open the other one called ‘hope.’ Of course I can – I am an Optimist.

Nommer asseblief ?

Veediefstal is ‘n groot probleem

THREE INSIGHTS INTO: FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY OR BANKRUPTCY

Greg Secker trades on the foreign exchange market while hovering over the Thames to raise funds for his Knowledge to Action Foundation.

Making money out of thin air

by PAUL HARRISON Deborah Meredith is a Executive Assistant who has real life experience of the trauma of business insolvency and bankruptcy and is bouncing back and starting again. She is not a financial advisor, lawyer or insolvency practitioner. Paul Harrison asked her to share her top three tips on coping with financial difficulty or bankruptcy. Her tips are her own, borne from experience:

Internationally renowned trader and helicopter enthusiast Greg Secker once again takes to the skies to raise money for a South African charity

by ELIZABETH GLANVILLE ON 17 August renowned trader Greg Secker, co-founder of the Knowledge to Action Foundation which supports underprivileged children in South Africa and beyond, will once again take to the skies for a day’s trading on the foreign exchange market. During trading he will send signals and tips down to traders on the ground at the Knowledge to Action trading floor in Fulham. This is the last in a series of nine trading days in which Secker and his partner Katherine Scott, originally from South Africa, hoped to raise a total of £250,000; before the penultimate flight they had already secured £230,000. The money will support various causes including the Ubuntu Education Fund in the Eastern Cape, where it will be used to help develop their recently established Early Childhood Development Programme. I attended a Flying Trader day on 28 June, spending time at the Knowledge to Action trading floor before meeting with Greg, Katherine and the traders at the London Heliport hotel. Many of the participants have turned to trading while looking for work, or as a second income, and have received training from the Foundation in Foreign Exchange and Stock Market trading. Filip Ogidel, originally from Poland, undertook the Knowledge to Action training course six weeks ago. “It was always something I wanted to do,” said Ogidel. “And now I may well take up more trading in the future.” He landed the award for the best effort, while prizes for the most pips per

trade went to Khalid Malik and Shummile Quai. With Knowledge to Action trading floors in Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as other international locations, Secker has considered holding parallel trading events in SA, but is unsure of the logistics. Here in London Secker intends to move on from his Flying Trader pseudonym, possibly taking inspiration from the river next time rather than the air. People question the reasons behind his projects but Secker always likes to try new things. “I’m not a why guy, I’m a why not guy,” he grinned, “but I’ll try something different next time.” As he proceeded to tell me about his work with fellow philanthropist Sir Richard Branson an image flashed to mind of them egging each other on like a pair of naughty schoolchildren. Secker, like Branson, belives charity and business should work hand in hand, especially in times of economic recession. He subscribes to Virgin Unite’s ‘Screw business as Usual’ intiative that calls for symbiotic collaboration of the two in order to create capital for both. As well as their work with Ubuntu the Knowledge to Action Foundation will be working with Branson’s Pride ‘n Purpose charity, which helps disadvantaged communities around South African’s Sabi Sand Reserve get better access to food, water, health and education services. To find out about flying trader events go to www. theflyingtrader.org, and for more on the Ubuntu the Knowledge to Action Foundation visit www. knowledgetoactionfoundation. co.uk

Deborah Meredith in action.

Tip 1: Don’t panic This may seem trite but when faced with insolvency, bankruptcy or financial difficulty the first emotions are fear and panic. In my experience panic begets panic and just creates more problems. Accept the situation as it is and work out how you’re going to improve things. You need a clear head to work through the paperwork involved in these situations and you’ll need your wits about you to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Tip 2: Take responsibility While it’s easy to blame everyone else and the recession for the situation, and I accept that there are very often external contributing factors, blaming others won’t help you. Right now you have to take responsibility for the situation and

make a plan of action to start getting yourself back into the black. Don’t expect this to happen overnight, it will take a long time. If you’re bankrupt it’s going to sit on your credit report for six years so allow yourself that amount of time to get your finances in order. Then make your plan and stick to it. Tip 3: Live within your means Oft quoted but true I’m afraid. There’s no easy way to get your finances back on track (unless you win the lottery). It’s going to take time, effort and some personal sacrifice. Look at where you can make savings in your expenditure. Don’t spend the money unless you really need to. When you start to track every penny you’re spending you’ll be surprised at where the money goes and where you can cut back.

Deborah answers George Savva’s questions on financial difficulties and debt that’s difficult to say. Some people bounce back really quickly whereas others disappear into a fog of perceived failure for years. Just as we all deal with grief and change differently, so too do we deal with bankruptcy differently and at our own pace.

George Savva is originally from Johannesburg and now lives in Newbridge, Gwent where he is a trainer and coach running his own business called It Takes… 7 Seconds. Recent years have been tougher than usual and George asked the following questions: Is it true that if you become bankrupt your debt dies with you? That’s a grey area. If you have absolutely no assets to sell and no disposable income left after going through your income and expenditure allowance with the trustees of your bankruptcy then yes, in effect the debt dies with you, however if you have assets and/or some disposable income after going through the income/ expenditure process then the assets are liquidated and your disposable income taken to redistribute to your creditors. How can I keep track of my financial situation? Treat your personal finances as you would your business finances. Whenever I work with a small business or an individual, one of the first things I do is get them to fill in a simple income/expenditure spreadsheet detailing everything

they know about. I also get them to create a cashflow forecast for both the business and personal finance, again detailing everything they can eg car MOT and repairs, house repairs, holidays, new school uniform for the kids, Christmas etc. If you know something is coming up but you don’t have the exact cost, create a budget for it and stick to it. Should the worst (ie bankruptcy) happen, how long will it affect me? All cases are different and I can only talk from my personal experience but the reality is that it will sit on your credit report for six years. As long as you cooperate fully with your trustees you can expect to be discharged from the bankruptcy after one year. Use the next five years to rebuild your credit history. In terms of how it will affect you emotionally,

Deborah blogs and shares resources about bouncing back from bankruptcy at www. bouncingbackfrombankruptcy. com. She can be contacted via www.deborah-meredith.com If you have any other topics that you would like covered, please contact Paul@mobivation.com

World Bank warns South Africa on its growth and inequality Asad Alam, World Bank Country Director for South Africa, says South Africa is highly integrated with the global economy, and is therefore susceptible to the ongoing slowdown in the Eurozone countries and China

by STAFF REPORTER THE World Bank has lowered its forecasts for South Africa’s economic growth in 2012 from 3.1% to 2.5%, citing falls in consumer and business confidence, and has warned that inequality risks being entrenched across generations in the country. The country, which exports to the European Union and China, is also highly exposed to the ongoing debt crisis in Europe and to fears that an economic slowdown in the developed world is undermining previously strong growth in Asia. “South Africa is highly integrated with the global economy, and therefore susceptible to the ongoing slowdown in the Eurozone countries and China, the two principal export destinations for its goods and services,” Asad Alam, World Bank Country Director for South Africa, said at the launch of the South Africa Economic Update report last Tuesday. On Monday, Reuters reported comments made by Pravin Gordhan, the finance minister, that growth was likely to undershoot the government forecast of 2.7%. The country has struggled to resume the high growth rates experienced before the financial crisis that precipitated a recession Nedbank Challenge print in 2009. This has Golf compounded pre-existing issues with poverty reduction and job creation in the country. The World Bank’s report, which included a new methodology for assessing citizens’ access to opportunities, found that progress towards universal access has been mixed, with primary education, electricity and telecommunications now more accessible, while the provision of water, sanitation, health insurance and housing had made less progress.

According to a report by the World Bank, electricity, primary education and telecommunications are now more accessible, but water, sanitation, housing and health insurance have made less progress. The report calls the country an ‘outlier’ in terms of the level and inequalities in employment opportunities. ad(Page 1

The country is also, the report said, “an outlier” in terms of the level and inequalities in employment opportunities. Young people, township residents and non-whites are still struggling to enter the workforce, relative to other segments of society, the World Bank said. “Our results show that a South African child not only has to work harder to overcome the disadvantages at birth due to circumstances, but having done

so, finds that these reemerge when seeking employment as an adult,” said Sandeep Mahajan, World Bank Task Team Leader for the South Africa Economic Update series in a statement accompanying the report’s release. Moreover, the disadvantages do not stop with that one person— they get transmitted across generations. The policy challenge is to find a way to break this vicious, self-perpetuating cycle of inequality in South Africa.”

Rand firms on ECB promise the ZAR weakened significantly against the USD, with analysts suggesting it could test a three-year low of R8.71 to the USD. “In the near term, I am looking for a re-test of the 1 June peak at R8.71 before an eventual break above that in due course,” said Kamran Sheikh, technical strategist at Informa Global Markets. By Friday though, the ZAR had regained 2% against the US Dollar, after the European Central Bank promised that they will hold the Eurozone together. “We are now firmly in the old R8.05-R8.35 range from a couple of weeks ago,” said Warrick Butler, a trader at Standard Bank. After hitting month lows against major currencies, the ZAR strengthened at the beginning of the week, after following global currency trends that were buoyed by improved Chinese economic indicators. to permanent residence, and a further 12 months with the status ‘Indefinite Leave to Remain’ more commonly known as permanent residence, before you will be eligible to apply for British citizenship. Visas and permits leading to permanent residence include; Tier 1 Entrepreneur, Tier 1 (General), Tier 2 Work Permit and Ancestry Visa. In some cases it is possible to qualify for permanent residence after three years, such as the Tier 1 Investor and Tier 1 Entrepreneur, if the applicant manages to create 10 jobs a year or have a turnover of £5 million in three years. Visas such as student visas and visitor visas are temporary visas and do not normally count towards your British citizenship if applying under the five year lawful continuous stay rule. One exception to this rule is where a person has been in the UK legally for a continuous period of ten years, at which time they can apply for permanent residence under the discretionary '10 year' rule. The 10 years may include time spent on temporary visas; such as the twoyear working holiday visa, student visas and other temporary visas. Under the new family immigration rules, if you are married to a British citizen or someone who holds Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK, you will be able to apply for British citizenship after you have lived in the UK for six years on a lawful continuous stay, provided that you hold permanent residence at the time of your application. THE GRAFT IS GREENER

Annelie Nel | Researcher and Therapist in the field of

Quantum Informational Biophysics by PAUL HARRISON

Born: Cape Town How long in UK: 6.5 years Job: Research, Programme Development and Training of an Integrative Computerised Information Platform. I work in the field of Quantum Informational Biophysics as both a Researcher and Therapist. Background: I started off working with the human body through the study of Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics etc., before focusing on the human mind through Psychology and doing my Masters in Neurological Repatterning. After that, my life became one big research project about the interconnectivity between these two aspects of life, but it didn’t stop there… I found my way into ‘Alice’s Wonderland’. Quantum Science and Health became my main fields of focus. Motto : “The only real wisdom is knowing you know nothing” – Socrates

What do you do in your job? At the Orassy (translated as ‘centre of vision’), my job is to know or find out everything there is to know about the quantum and semiquantum devices we use. We use them for assessments, diagnostics, therapeutic treatments and research. Part of my job is also related to training others how to use the devices as well as assisting in the development of programmes to incorporate a new paradigm of health and education into society. What is the most exciting thing about your job? I get to research and be part of amazing scientific experiments related to health, consciousness and some unconventional phenomena… things beyond most people’s awareness. What is the most challenging thing about your job? Here in the UK, we have an extremely controlled society, which is constantly bombarded and manipulated by media and marketing campaigns which leads to information overload. By using ‘left brain’ education, people have been led so far away from their essential nature that they have lost the ability to listen to their own bodies about their needs. We have been trained to blindly listen to authority and not take responsibility for our own health. To make matters worse there is this quick-fix mentality for everything! Fast food, fast

internet, fast information… truth is, there are no quick fixes when it comes to your health… you can’t cheat your body with miracle cures! My biggest challenge is to re-educate people about their health and manage their expectations. This means they have to take responsibility and do the work. Tell us an interesting story related to your job. I was recently in Russia for a conference and stayed in a house with a few other scientists and researchers. One of them is working with devices that teach blind people to see. I tried it and within 20 minutes I could start to ‘see’ shapes and ‘feel’ the different frequencies of colours. Fascinating stuff!

Future plans? My intention would be to remain in the UK for a few more years to further develop and grow what we have at the Orassy. I hope, one day, to be able to bring home the amazing work we do here. I envision an Orassy Quantum Spa and Research Centre in every major city. Do you think being South African helps you in your job? Yes, there is an inherent enthusiasm that comes with growing up in a beautiful city with mountains, beaches and vineyards that brings determination to make the world a better place. Zimbabwe Community

Tomas Perez: Seeing Zimbabwe’s potential Administrative Assistant at FARM-Africa and founder of the Zimbabwe Diaspora Youth Network UK believes Africa can overcome its challenges and move forward by improving farming techniques and investing in agriculture by MARY ISOKARIARI Name: Tomas Perez Born: Harare, Zimbabwe Time in UK: 10 years Job: Administrative Assistant at FARM-Africa Background: I left Zimbabwe at the age of 14 to complete my education in England. I was lucky enough to study Social and Political Sciences at Cambridge, and then complete a Masters in African Studies at the School of Oriental and African studies in London What job do you do and what does it involve? FARM-Africa is a non-governmental organisation that works with rural farmers in East Africa to help them improve their farming techniques and get the best from their land. As an admin assistant, I work with the different departments within the charity and provide them with support as well as organise events and trips to Africa. Whilst working here, I’ve gained great insight into the work of an NGO and how a charity should be run. You founded the Zimbabwe Diaspora Youth Network UK. Why did you start the group? I initially started the ZDYN UK as part of my Masters dissertation. I chose to investigate the potential of young Zimbabweans in the Diaspora and the impact they have in the UK and back home, in terms of economics, politics, society and culture. Social media has allowed me to engage

with a number of young Zimbabweans across the UK. After my dissertation, I realised that the Facebook group was still very popular, with around 250 members regularly using it to share ideas, stories, events and advertise jobs and products. Ideally, I would love to expand this into an organisation that can connect young Zimbabweans with established professional Zimbabweans who can help with job opportunities or work experience. However, I am happy to continue with the group and encourage young Zimbabweans in the UK to stay connected and celebrate our culture. What are the most exciting and challenging aspects of your job? I’ve always wanted to work in the NGO and charity sector, and help improve the lives of others. It’s exciting because we all know the potential Africa has, and if it wasn’t for problems like poverty and hunger, Africa could really move forward. Of course these are massive challenges, but I genuinely believe by improving farming techniques and investing in agriculture, Africa can overcome them and become less dependent on aid. What Africa needs is investment. That’s why it’s been exciting working for this NGO, as there are many people who are keen to invest in Africa. These projects are making a real difference. What do you miss the most about Zimbabwe? Everything! Zimbabwe was a fantastic country to grow up in, everybody was so friendly and there was a stronger sense of community than there is in the UK. I miss how close we were to nature. I used to love going rock climbing or for long walks in the Nyanga Mountains, and there is nothing in the UK that can compare to Victoria Falls!

Wanted: Zimbabwean journalists & photographers by HEATHER WALKER THE South African is looking for UKbased writers and photographers to contribute articles or photos to the dedicated Zimbabwean section of our website and weekly newspaper. Because of the close links between South Africa and Zimbabwe, we run this Zimbabwean section for which we always need content. Depending on your interests, this could range from conducting interviews with notable Zimbabweans and diaspora businesspeople in the UK, to humour, columns or reporting on functions such as beauty pageants, film screenings and charity events. The UK Zimbabwean community is a busy and vibrant one, so there are lots of opportunities to get involved writing about it! This is the ideal opportunity for students or recent journalism graduates to build up a portfolio of published work and gain valuable contacts in the media industry. It would also suit someone who would like to build their profile in a particular field, using their writing skills to get exposure.

Contributors need to be able to commit to doing at least one article a week. You don’t have to be Zimbabwean but it will obviously count in your favour if you are. To apply, please send your CV and two examples of your work to editor@ thesouthafrican.com

Tomas moved to the UK from Zimbabwe when he was 14. With a degree from Cambridge, he now works for a non-govermental organisation that works with rural farmers in East Africa.

The food was always great too. I still cook sadza for myself in the UK, but it’s not the same as having it in Zimbabwe (or maybe I’m just not the greatest cook!). For those who have never been to Zimbabwe, how would you sell it? I would say you have to see it to believe it! It is a country that combines spectacular countryside landscapes with busy cities. The people have an incredible spirit and determination to achieve great things, no matter what they are up against.

What do you think is the future for Zimbabwe? I see a very bright future for Zimbabwe. Despite the problems in the past, I strongly believe we can all pull together and help take the country forward. The economy is improving now and there is great hope for the future. We must learn from each other and put aside any differences to achieve what we all want – a prosperous, unified and successful Zimbabwe. www.thesouthafrican.com/zimbabwe

by NICOLE HOLGATE WEST Cumbria is pushing for more tourism, and I think it thoroughly deserves the attention. Travelling up on Virgin trains was not only relatively quick but blissfully comfortable. Once you reach Cumbria itself, the more slow-moving local services are fantastic for taking in the views of broad estuaries and wild, windswept countryside as you head past small coastal towns into real Lake District territory. Within this area, a short walk away from Ravenglass station, Muncaster Castle is a brilliant day out. The remaining estate is resplendent in the spring and summer, with collections of vegetation which create a Himalayan trail, a wildflower meadow, a hedge maze, a Japanese garden and spectacular lily and bluebell woodland. After wandering the grounds you can visit the castle itself: tours are given, when possible, by the FrostPennington family, who still live in part of the castle. It’s a gorgeously eclectic building, which was added on to by several generations and has, among other things, a fantastical library, a leather wallpapered dining hall, a huge art collection, and a room known as the Tapestry room, which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl. They were also the home of the original Tom Fool, whose reputation stays with us in the word tomfoolery. The castle holds a year-round itinerary of intriguing events based on its extensive heritage, including ghost walks and sit-ins (it is allegedly the most haunted castle in England) on Hallowe’en, a yearly Festival of Fools in remembrance of Tom, and regular gigs and productions under the stars. You can even stay in the gorgeous coachman’s quarters or in nearby Ravenglass. Also on the castle grounds is the World Owl Trust sanctuary. You can ‘meet’ the birds daily at 2.30 on the main lawn, or visit them in their aviary the rest of the time. There is a large amount of information about the owls and the sanctuary’s breeding scheme and you can, of course, adopt your favourite. If

Enjoy a tranquil break from the big city, while the more adventurous can try one of the many outdoor activities that the stunning Lake District has to offer.

owls aren’t enough, they also feed the wild herons daily at 4.30pm: its an unusual sight. Heading back into the wilderness, West Lakes Adventure is one of several ways to experience the true outdoors in the Western Lakes. Making use of the ‘less touristy’ areas, this dynamic family team offer a bespoke adventure experience. Nervously venturing out with Steve, I wasn’t as terrified of heights as I thought I would be, and successfully climbed and abseiled a couple of rock faces. Then a more peaceful canoeing session, followed by ghyll scrambling, which is probably the most exercise I have ever done in one day. As inexperienced as

I was, Steve was a great teacher and I went away from our single day of adventuring with the determination to come back. As the company is growing, they intend to expand their premises next year. Check out the activities at www. westlakesadventure.co.uk. To escape back into civilisation, Ravenglass and Eskdale railway offers a wee blast from the past in the form of its five steam engines, which transport visitors seven miles along a narrow gauge railway from the coast through to Dalegarth Station and back again, past spectacular views of valleys and tarns. As a Londoner, the peace and natural beauty was hard to leave behind.

Five More Adventures in the Lake District • Open Water Swimming: An increasingly popular activity, which makes amazing use of the scenery and is a unique way to get to the more sheltered bays of the lakes you encounter. Four recommended lakes are Ullswater, Coniston Water, Windermere and Derwentwater, which offer safe swimming and beautiful surroundings. Throughout the summer, Head to the Hills runs Wild Swim workshops. • Canoeing: Another great way to literally explore the lakes, and get to tucked away islands and beaches. Or for the more experienced, there are fast-flowing rivers and white waters to get to grips with, so that whether this is your first or hundredth time, there’s always something interesting on offer. • Segway: Yes, guided segway tours. Although they’re not quite as fast-paced as some of the other

activities available, they are off-road and its a pretty unique day out, as well as a surprisingly fun way to see the lakes without all of that pesky, tiring walking. • Walks: The Lake District has a massive variety of walks for the expert and the beginner. Most can be looked up online but should not generally be attempted without some kind of OS map (phone signal and GPS can’t always be guaranteed!). Several walks involve different themes, such as a ‘Beer and Bangers’ selection which takes you niftily between some decent pubs for local ales and Cumbrian sausages. The Beer and Bangers festival takes place in early October. • Go Ape! A three-hour long journey through the treetops on a variety of zip lines, swings, rope ladders and high wires, for the monkey in all of us.

Saracens’ season is taking shape

Saracens rugby club has unveiled a new sponsor, Allianz Insurance, and thereby named their new ground in Copthall, Barnet as Allianz Park. Allianz has committed £8 million over the next six years by ROB FLUDE WHEN anyone from Saracens says that “something special is happening at Sarries”, they are not just paying lip service to the catchphrase just for PR purposes. There is a steadfast determination from everyone involved at the innovative North London club to walk the talk and match their words with actions. Last week the club unveiled a new sponsor, Allianz Insurance, and thereby named their new ground in Copthall, Barnet as Allianz Park. Allianz has committed £8 million over the next six years, and will also be displayed on the team’s new playing shirts. The stadium, an existing athletics track, will be redeveloped over the next few months with demountable stands and conference facilities being the most obvious additions, transforming it into a 10,050-capacity venue, perfect for the sizes of the Aviva Premiership crowds. The idea is that for 9 months of the year, Saracens will tenant the stadium, and then the athletics track can be utilised

during the summer months. The other big plan for this stadium is the proposed fitting of artificial turf, which has been IRBsanctioned, thus making it the first English rugby team to do so. The ground will also have four video screens, one in each corner, another unique feature in the UK. There will also be a full-length bar along the main stand, which can then be deconstructed and used as an indoor athletics sprint track during winter. Saracens chief Edward Griffiths had been lobbying the council for a number of years, but has finally got the desired outcome, all in the name of delivering a fantastic match-day experience for the fans. Moving from Watford FC’s home ground, Vicarage Road (17,447 capacity) to the smaller Allianz Park means matches will more than likely be sold out and the crowd can engage better with one another. Saracens’ first game there will be against Exeter Chiefs on 16 February, but they also have plans to play the Leicester Tigers at Wembley on 15 September, and Munster at a central London venue

yet to be confirmed in December. Add to this the traditional London double-header at Twickenham on 1 September, and the club will be fairly nomadic this season. But moving to the new stadium in February will be a homecoming of sorts, as Sarries played at Bramley Road for years before turning professional in 1995. The location is also perfectly nestled inbetween Mill Hill overland and Mill Hill East tube stations, with shuttle buses being lined up to take fans to the stadium on match days. Barnet is the 10th-largest town in the UK, with around 350,000 residents, making it the largest borough in London in terms of population, and fourth largest in terms of size. Schalk Brits, Sarries’ Springbok hooker, told us he is very keen to get into the new headquarters. He said that the players were asked for input into the design from an entertainment and matchday experience point of view. As for his Bok ambitions, there is still a flame burning bright inside Brits. “I’m waiting every day for that phone call from Heyneke.”

Curiously, the synthetic pitch could be a factor to facilitate that desire. “We’ve trained on Arsenal’s training facility, but the good thing

with Allianz Park is that you will see entertaining rugby all year round, and that suits the way we want to play.”

Wham Bam, Thank You Cam! Cameron van der Burgh swims “the perfect race” to take Olympic gold and a new world record

by ROB FLUDE CAMERON van der Burgh clinched South Africa’s first medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and a gold in world and Olympic record time at that. The swimmer led the men’s 100m breaststroke final from start to finish to beat his own Olympic record – one that he had broken the evening before in the semifinal – and also shave 0.12 seconds off Australian Brenton Rickard’s previous world record mark, finishing with a time of 58.46. Van der Burgh dedicated his victory to the late Norwegian world champion swimmer Dale Oen, who died in April of heart failure, aged only 26.

The 24-year-old from Pretoria said, “It’s a feeling I can’t describe right now, it has been a lot of work in the making. Everything has paid off tonight. I just have to pay tribute to Alexander Dale Oen tonight, I know he has been with me this year, I think he helped me finish the race in such a strong manner. If there is such a thing as the perfect race, I think I swam it at the right time tonight. Alexander pushed me in training, it made me realise I had to go faster to win the gold medal, that is what we trained for and that is what we have achieved.” Australian Christian Sprenger finished behind van der Burgh in a time of 58.93, while the USA’s

Brendan Hansenthird (59.49) took the bronze medal. This year has been a tough one for Van der Burgh, who, in 2008, became Africa’s first home-trained world record holder and the youngest at the age of 20. Not only did he lose his friend and rival Oen, but his house was robbed in May, on his birthday, with thieves getting away with almost half his medals and trophies. He has clearly put these recent incidents behind him, which shows the character and strength of the man. Van der Burgh trains with Dirk Lange, who also coaches the German swimming team, and he represented South Africa at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

He is studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and Laws at the University of Pretoria. The Arsenal fan carried the flag for South Africa at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where he won the 50 metres and 100 metres breaststroke gold medals. He is now the world record holder for both those distances, and in both the long and short course variations of the stroke. Van der Burgh becomes South Africa’s first male Olympic gold medallist in an individual swimming event, and becomes South Africa’s 20th medal winner since re-admission to international sport at the 1992 Barcelona

Olympics. He has another opportunity to win a gold medal, with the 4x100 metre medley relay final on Saturday, should the South African team qualify.

SA House in London hosts party for Team SA

The High Commissioner saluted the athletes for their hard work and dedication and wished them luck for the Games, underlining the fact that as ambassadors for South Africa they would be flying the flag for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic games by STAFF REPORTER THE South African Olympic Team was officially welcomed to the United Kingdom by the South African High Commissioner, Dr Zola Skweyiya at a reception hosted at South Africa House on 26 July. The High Commissioner saluted the athletes for their hard work and dedication and wished them luck for the Games, underlining the fact that as ambassadors for South Africa they would be flying the flag for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic games. He said, “Love of sport is at the heart of this great competition and the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics is our opportunity to share with the world the passion we as South Africans have for the world of sport. “Your arrival caps a great sporting week for South Africa in the United Kingdom, from Hashim Amla’s triple century and the Proteas fantastic performance at the London Oval, to Ernie Els winning the 2012 Open

Championship at Royal Lytham. I hope you will be inspired by these truly outstanding sporting achievements.” “Tomorrow we are all looking forward to that special moment of pride when we see you wearing our national colours at the Opening Ceremony. To each one of you, I would like to assure you of our total support every single time you compete in the Games” said Dr Skweyiya. The Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula thanked the High Commissioner for giving Team SA a warm African welcome. “The gallant fighting spirit that characterises our nation through our forebears must be instilled in our pure African veins, as we defend the flag. It’s motherland or death on the British soil,” Mbalula told the athletes who were led by Chef de Mission Patience Shikwambana. Sascoc President Gideon Sam also thanked the High Commissioner for his hospitality. “When we left SA the Commander

in Chief summoned us to the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse, to give his final orders to the troops. We are welcomed to defend the pride of our nation” said Gideon Sam extending a

token of gratitude on behalf of the team. Other guests at the reception included representatives from national, provincial and local government, SA Tourism, Brand

SA, South African Airways, and District 9 actor Sharlto Copley. The South African vocal quartet Romanz performed during the reception. www.thesouthafrican.com/sport

SHARKS CHOKE STOMERS But the next headline could very well be “Chiefs choke Sharks”...

N

by WESLEY MCKAY

ew Super Rugby tournament winners will be crowned this weekend after the Sharks beat the Stormers 26 – 19 in Cape Town and the Chiefs beat the Crusaders 20 – 17 in Hamilton to set up the final in New Zealand this Saturday. Sporting history is littered with the remains of the broken hearts of “nearly there” sportsmen and women – “chokers” – as they’re affectionately known. Unfortunately for the Stormers, they now fall in to the abovementioned category and will have to carry the term around their broad necks as inconspicuously as Mr T’s jewellery for a little while longer. Andy Murray, Adam Scott, the English football team, the Proteas and until recently, the All Blacks: if the Stormers weren’t already members of the Psychological Meltdown Club prior to Saturday’s defeat at home to the Sharks, they certainly are now. In fact, they’re proving to be platinum card members of the above-mentioned club with a massive accumulation of air miles on the choke plane. For the third year running, the Stormers have enhanced their “choker” nametag by being dumped out of the Southern Hemisphere’s elite rugby competition in the knock-out stages. What will make this defeat even more difficult to digest for the Stormers is the fact that Saturday’s semifinal was probably their best chance of winning the competition yet. Top professional sportspeople will forever experience winning and losing – that is a given. But when the wins never seem to come, as they haven’t for the

Stormers, they become even harder to attain and the psychological yoke becomes heavier and heavier. The All Blacks lived with the “choker” nametag for decades. For many years they had been the dominant force in world rugby (I hear myself saying begrudgingly). But they had not won the World Cup since 1987. That bothered them and the rest of the rugby world were more than happy to bring up that fact close to any of the World Cups. That had an effect on the Kiwis, and although they freed themselves from the unfortunate term by winning last year’s World Cup, anyone watching that game against the French saw that the Kiwis may as well have been playing with straightjackets on, so visible were the nerves and pressure on the players. After being defeated in the 2010 final by Victor Matfield’s Bulls and losing out to the Crusaders in Cape Town in last year’s semi final, the Stormers will now need to wait at least another year to have the chance of shaking their “choker” name tags, a task – as previous history has shown – that will now be even harder. The Stormers can use the All Blacks as an example that they can change it around. The only way to overcome it will be to keep playing the rugby they have and keep getting themselves into contention come knock-out stages of the tournament. Remember, you have to be in it to win it. The Sharks haven’t been mentioned too much here and luckily so for them. Although they happily inflicted the gut-wrenching defeat on the Stormers, the Sharks have been in three Super Rugby finals without ever winning.

Stormers player Deon Fourie, left, fights for the ball against the Sharks’ Ryan Kankowski, right during the Super Rugby game in Cape Town on Saturday. Photo by AP Photo/Schalk van Zuydam.

Another final defeat for the Sharks and next week’s headline could very well be “Chiefs choke Sharks”. None of the teams or people mentioned above have it as bad as the Proteas, though. If you search the words “choke (sport)” on Wikipedia, there right at the top of the page are the words “South

African National Cricket Team.” (I’m still not sure who posted the entry on Wikipedia, although, I suspect it is some smug Aussie called Wazza or Tommo). So it could be worse for the Stormers and the Sharks. But if neither team can win the Super Rugby tournament in the next few years, I suspect a new entry will

be appearing on the Wikipedia “choke” page for at least one of these two rugby giants. Besides winning the tournament, that should be more than enough of an incentive to turn things around. Super 15 Final, Saturday 4 August: Chiefs v Sharks – Hamilton, New Zealand, 8h35 BST.
