SOUTH AFRICAN BABY BOOM IN BRITAIN
We’re breeding! South Africa is the 8th most common country of origin for all babies born to immigrant mothers in the UK
F
by STAFF REPORTER
IGURES released by the British government have revealed that in 2011 a quarter of all babies born in NHS hospitals (184,000) had a foreignborn mother. Of those births, 11% were to South Africans, putting South Africa in the top 10 most common origin countries for immigrant mothers, the Daily Mail reported. Topping the list is Poland with 20,500 births, followed by Pakistan with 18,438 and India with 14,892, while SA comes in at number 8 with 4,430. The other countries in the top 10 are Nigeria (7,476), Somalia (5,654), Germany (5,108), Lithuania (3,788) and China (3,611). When taking into consideration the total number of births in the UK, this means approximately 2.5% were to South Africans. According to the Office for National Statistics, this is the highest proportion of births to mothers born outside the UK since the collection of parents’ country of birth was introduced at birth registration in 1969. More than half (56.7%) of the babies with foreign mothers were born in London. Do you have children born in the UK? Are you raising them to be British or South African? Or both? Were some of the Marikana miners hunted down & shot at close range?
In an article in The Daily Maverick, photojournalist Greg Marinovich claims that only a minority of the Marikana miners were killed in the filmed event where police claim they acted in self-defence by STAFF REPORTER
SEVERAL letters spraypainted by forensic investigators onto a collection of boulders about 300m from the site of the Marikana mine shooting appear to show another side of the story. Marking the spots where the bodies of 14 miners were found after the police opened fire on a group of their colleagues on 16 August, the letters appear to reveal that some of the mineworkers were in fact shot at close range or crushed by police vehicles. According to an article in The Daily Maverick by Pulitzer-prize winning photojournalist Greg Marinovich, only a minority were killed in the filmed event where police claim they acted in selfdefence. “The rest was murder on a
massive scale,” said Marinovich. Marinovich, who spent two weeks taking photos at the scene of the protest, said the wounded miners could not possibly have dragged themselves 300m to the rocks, which meant, “They were not caught in a fusillade of gunfire from police defending themselves, as the official account would have it. It is becoming clear that heavilyarmed police hunted down and killed the miners in cold blood. “Of the 34 miners killed at Marikana, no more than a dozen of the dead were captured in news footage shot at the scene. The majority of those who died, according to surviving strikers and researchers, were killed beyond the view of cameras at [this] nondescript collection of boulders,”

Foreign students stranded after London Met licence revoked
by STAFF REPORTER
MORE than 2,000 foreign students could face deportation after the UK Border Agency revoked London Metropolitan University’s licence to sponsor students from outside the European Union. The withdrawal of the university’s licence means it has been removed from the register of licensed sponsors, and students from outside the European Union are no longer allowed to study at the university. These students now face being deported within two months unless they find another sponsor, according to the National Union of Students (NUS). A UK Border Agency spokesperson said London Met’s licence had been withdrawn after it failed to address “serious and systemic failings that were identified by the UK Border Agency six months ago.” The Border Agency found that more than a quarter of students sampled studying at the university did not even have permission to be in the country. According to Immigration Minister Damian Green, a significant proportion of those did not have good English. The spokesperson said the agency had been working with the university since then, but the latest audit revealed problems with 61% of files randomly sampled. Allowing London Metropolitan University to continue to sponsor
and teach international students was not an option. “These are problems with one university, not the whole sector. British universities are among the best in the world – and Britain remains a top-class destination for top-class international students.” A government-led taskforce is being created, which will include the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Universities UK, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the UK Border Agency and the NUS. This will work with London Metropolitan to support those affected and enable appropriately qualified genuine students to find another institution where they can continue their studies in the UK. London Metropolitan University students who are already in the UK with a current, valid UK visa do not need to do anything immediately. If an existing London Metropolitan University student with a current, valid visa is on holiday outside the UK, they can return to the UK. New students who were planning to travel to the UK to start studying with London Metropolitan University should not travel. Are you a foreign student at London Met? South Africans warned of UK immigration scams
Friends and family back home should be wary of illegal immigration advisers whose tactics include advertising their cheap services on community websites and asking UK job applicants to pay over monies for UK Home Office fees by REBECCA MEESON-FRIZELLE
SOUTH Africans are advised to take caution in light of the increase in activity of illegitimate immigration advisers and services, particularly with regards to UK employment. JP Breytenbach, Director of Breytenbachs Immigration Consultants (BIC), a firm that specialises in UK and South African immigration, confirmed that scams are common within the industry and highlighted the seriousness of these scams. “We get clients who turn to us for help after they have been scammed by companies who have promised them job opportunities and work permits in the UK,’” said Breytenbach. “Often the clients only become aware of the scam after they have resigned from their current jobs in their home countries and have paid over monies for the ‘work permit’.” A client of BIC confirmed the prevalence of such scams having fallen victim to one herself. Heila Hutchinson of Johannesburg spoke of how “it has always been a dream to live in the UK” and therefore decided to seek UK employment having received multiple emails from
what appeared to be a UK-based company called Transanco Construction. Hutchinson maintains she had little reason to doubt their reputability. Having received a letter of employment within 24 hours of her application, Hutchinson believed this to be a little strange especially when no formal interview had taken place. However, she felt that she was offered the position based on her construction-orientated CV and verification of references. It was only when the company began requesting monies that Hutchinson became suspicious. Through various enquiries, it quickly emerged that the company’s manager was in fact from Nigeria and the company was notorious for scamming. Similarly, when asked if they have been affected by immigration malpractices, a number of The South African’s readers have also encountered scams or at least know of someone who has. One reader raised a particularly pertinent question: How can one check whether the agency you are working through is a scam artist or not? ‘The most important thing that anyone seeking for immigration advice or services must look for
is a properly regulated advisor,” responded Clyde James, Head of Policy, Publications and Stakeholders at The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC). “Those regulated by the OISC must display the OISC global tick logo which shows that the Commissioner has judged them fit and competent to provide immigration advice or services. All regulated advisers must have an OISC regulation number,” he said. James added that advice seekers may alternatively consult solicitors, barristers, or legal executives as an exception to OISC regulated advisers. Breytenbachs has additionally offered the following indispensible advice on how to avoid falling into the scam trap: • Be wary of unknown companies often only advertising their cheap services on community websites with no known physical addresses and often using email addresses such as @Gmail, @Yahoo etc. • Be wary if a job is being offered to you and no formal job interview took place. • Be wary if you are offered a job and asked to pay over any monies for UK Home Office fees. Application fees for entry
With UK immigration scams on the increase, South Africans are being urged to be extremely cautious of international job offers that ask for money.
clearance will not be paid by the employer but by the applicant directly to the UK Home Office. Be wary of paying over any monies in general. • If you are offered a job, make sure the company offering it is
legitimate by doing a background check. For more information on how to find a regulated adviser or check if they are registered, visit: http:// oisc.homeoffice.gov.uk or advice seekers can call 0845 000 0046.

LUDRE STEVENS
Marikana wakeup call HOW could the Marikana tragedy have been allowed to happen? How is it possible in the times we live in? We are supposed to be living in the new South Africa where the days of the state killing its citizens are long over. Unfortunately the truth is not that simple. It’s not a clear cut case of a political oppressive state, but rather the case of an economically misdirected one. The underlying drivers of this tragedy are the fundamental issues in South Africa: unemployment and poverty. Many South Africans are desperate for work to support themselves and their families, settling for low wages and
On “How many South Africans live overseas?” Dick: That SA cannot give accurate figures is pure BS. By law every person holding SA citizenship has to leave and enter the country on the green mamba, of which a passport number is entered into a database at the airport and border posts. So they know exactly how many South African passports have left, and how many have returned. Tricia Sutherland: Considering most of my school friends and family have immigrated to Aus, NZ and UK, I bet there must be loads living overseas. I’ve not immigrated like the rest of my family but am living in Dubai and not sure whether to keep or sell my house back home. I miss SA terribly but every time I go back for a visit I’m reminded how unsafe I feel and it’s only time before my worst nightmares come true. It’s very sad. Mark Richardson: This is totally incorrect. I know many South Africans who don’t even feature in the figures as they have had British passports all their life with schooling in SA. Going to an excellent SA shop in Erith (Foods4u) you see many new people week in and out. In the past three months at a friend’s local in Brentwood, Essex, 18 new families have moved into that area and all left SA in the past two to three months. You can’t cap a figure. The SA Club on the Costa del Sol has 3000+ members, all European passport holders and
dangerous working conditions. With a meagre salary insufficient to live on, and no alternative options of better paying jobs they turn to their unions for protection and support. With multitudes in this position the unions are empowered by numbers and with the national government dependant on their votes to maintain power we find ourselves in dangerous territory with nobody ready to take responsibility or appropriate actions in negotiating and resolving wage disputes until it is too late and lives are lost. The government needs to take immediate action – the inquiry is a start, but not enough. Unemployment and poverty need to be tackled aggressively and real solutions need to be put into place to jump start our economy. Things like: • Finding an alternative to the Affirmative Action and BEE policy that addresses the unfair past, but doesn’t choke the economy • Breaking the hold that Cosatu and other labour unions have over the labour laws, so that we can free up our economic labour resources
and create more jobs • Encouraging investment and job creating opportunities, rather than scaring them away with mixed messages about nationalisation of economic productive sectors, such as mining and farming. There are better ways to solve the inequities, through farm and mine taxes or equity-income sharing that at least benefit the workers, not the “Tenderpreneurs” at the top of the food chain • And lastly, really fixing the education system. I mean really fix it. Let the Limpopo failed education system also be a wakeup call The old small pie divvying up hasn’t worked. The Marikana tragedy is a rude awakening for our country, the government, the ANC and its citizens. It’s time for new and different solutions. all ex-South African. With the SA figures totally flawed within the country it is not easy to work out. By checking the cic.gc.ca website for Canada the figures listed are totally out. Within the last five years alone 17,432 South Africanborn people have got permanent resident status. Personally I have not seen a decrease in South Africans leaving the UK (besides the two year working holiday people who had no further right to stay), but a massive increase in the number of families, not only white but black and mixed race. In fact in the past three months, five families we know have returned to the UK as there is no employment for educated professionals in SA. Cassandra: What a pity such a beautiful country is spoiled by crime, fraud, bad government etc. The emigration figures do not seem accurate, I dare say there are hardly any people left to carry on any good service or technology in the country. Many people living here are already ready to go or have a place somewere else. Many do not say they have emigrated… they just leave. I recently was told by many removal companies that for the ones who do not hold an EU passport, their last outpost is Mauritius! Anything is better than staying here where food prices are overtaking even the UK and we are being ripped off by banking and electricity costs. Mfa: The accurate number of South Africans immigrating will never be known due to dual citizenship. All I can say is that all those who immigrated were never true South Africans. True South Africans are those who never possessed dual citizenship and those who returned to South Africa in the in ‘90s and thereafter. So let us stop counting opportunists.

Saffer: I disagree with Mfa. Staying in South Africa and exposing your family to racism, crime, theft and gross stupidity by the ruling party does not make you South African. I am a proud South African living in Canada. I consider myself a South African in that I still long to go home one day, when it will be safe and I will not be persecuted due to an accident at birth – being white. I object to your notion that only true South Africans stay there. My view is only stupid South Africans do that.

So you think you are funny” kompetisie.
Kort resensies oor Albert se verskyning in die West Midlands Comedy Forum: - Albert Smith is getting a good reputation on the circuit and is definitely growing in confidence. He has a nice, relaxed, conversational style with some lovely juxtapositions, like his relationships with his mother and his ex-wife, that seem incongruous with his obviously educated background – almost the opposite of country dumb. He finds great humour in tales of an educated man being outwitted by modern technology and domineering women and has a very warm, endearing personality. Always a pleasure to see and always a pleasure to chat to before and after the gig. - 16 February 2012, Hollybush - I’d seen Albert at a Lou Deemy variety night and had wondered how he’d get on at a Bush proper gig. He’s very relaxed and gentle and he got them all laughing – so he got on fine. He does some great stuff about how there’d be no more wars if women ruled the world. He also does some good stuff about the colours of flags and brought the house down with what seemed a Freudian slip betwixt the singular and plural of the shade that is the opposite to white. I found out afterwards that it was deliberate – clever man. – 25 August 2011, Colin Harris - Albert Smith was on third, a South African man who did five minutes of fantastic stuff, he got huge laughs and left the stage whilst he was winning. - 15 May 2012, Phillip McC.

THIS is one of my favourite summer salads; so many delicious flavours in every mouthful and really healthy too (very unlike me as I’m addicted to cream and butter). This salad is perfect for a lazy lunch with a large bottle of rosé (and maybe a friend or two) or why not take it into work for a healthy lunch – break away from those supermarket sandwiches and sushi boxes and take in your own I say.

Ekhaya to close with show by Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse
Legendary South African multi-instrumentalist Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse will take the stage at London’s Southbank’s Centre on 9 September by STAFF REPORTER SOUTH African musician Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse will close Ekhaya, South Africa’s home at the Southbank Centre for the Paralympics, with a concert at 6.30pm on Sunday 9 September. Today, after a 50-year career, Mabuse’s influence on the industry that gave him his voice continues to grow. Fiercely proud and keen to share his wealth of knowledge, he’s passionate about having the youth respect the veterans who made South Africa great. “Our elders and forefathers need to be respected and heard for their contribution,” he explains. “If we look and listen, we can only continue to grow.” Mabuse wears many hats – entertainer, businessman, father and care-giver to many. His contribution to the diverse landscape of South Africa is appreciated by music lovers globally. From Carnegie Hall, New York to Newtown, Johannesburg, when “Hotstix” hits a stage, the world sits up and listens. Born in Johannesburg in 1951, Mabuse began playing drums at the age of eight – the instrument he would master to such an extent that he quickly gained the nickname “Hotstix”. Musical influences came from his grandfather and uncles, who were traditional singers of isicathamiya, a choral music style sung mainly by men. Mabuse has mastered many instruments: the drums, flute, piano, saxophone, kalimba, alto flute, timbales and African drums. However, as a young man, he thought he was destined to become a doctor or a lawyer, not a worldfamous musician. He became a professional musician at the age of 15 when he formed his first band The Beaters, which evolved to become Harari, one of the most successful acts that dominated the music scene of 1970s South Africa. A highlight in their more than decade-long career came in 1978 when the group was
invited to perform in the USA with Hugh Masekela. During the tour, the band’s leader Selby Ntuli died, leaving Mabuse as the new front man. Harari supported Percy Sledge, Timmy Thomas, Letta Mbulu, Brook Benton and Wilson Pickett on their South African tours. This eclectic ensemble was impossible to categorise; mixing funk and disco with jazz, while also using traditional African instruments to create a completely unique sound that many tried, but failed to imitate. They were the ultimate party band, yet boasted some of the best musicians around at the time, such as Alec Khali and Lionel Petersen. One of SA’s most important musical acts, Harari will forever hold legendary status – even after their split in 1982. In his solo capacity, Mabuse continued to create original South African-born music, culminating in 1985 in his biggest single “Burn Out”, which catapulted him to a new level of fame. This funky township disco jam became the first major crossover hit in SA, selling in excess of half a million copies. Over the years the song has been remixed
by international deejays and covered by many of South African artists, qualifying it as one of the country’s most cherished classic tracks. Mabuse’s name became synonymous with “township jive”, but, as his live performances have shown, it’s never been easy to label “Hotstix”. Throughout the course of Mabuse’s half-a-century career, he has become a musical ambassador for South Africa, performing in virtually every country in Africa and touring to places such as the USA, England, France, Germany and Italy. He has also recorded and produced legendary artists such as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri and Sibongile Khumalo. In 1996, after a 10-year sabbatical, Mabuse returned with the album Township Child. A number of albums followed, including two live albums in 2005 and 2006. Beyond his ongoing musical and philanthropic work, he’s busier now than at the height of his career. As a regular commentator on arts and culture, he has sat on the boards of The National Arts Council and South African Musicians Rights Organisation. Mabuse, who dropped out of Grade 11 to join Harari, recently passed his matric at the age of 61, and intends to study a masters degree in anthropology. Warm, compassionate and gifted in ways even he is still learning about, Mabuse is more than one of South Africa’s and the world’s most admired musicians; he is a gentle living legend. All who meet and share stages with him are touched by his humility and grace.
The OPTIMIST KAREN DE VILLIERS
Should I simply marry the grape?
DARLING is over me. The passion seems long gone and I’ll tell you why. Nowadays when I say I am fat, he says nothing. Sometimes he actually mentions the amount of sugar in wine. Then he looks at my second glass and smiles that smug smile that makes me want to have slap rage. At no point any longer does he say ‘Darling precious of mine, what nonsense! You are not fat.’ Would be brilliant if he said: ‘You are as beautiful and skinny and alluring as you were the first time my eyes glanced upon your ethereal being.’ The fact that men never say words such as ‘ethereal’ shows how unlikely this will be. So I decide that I need to lose a few pounds. Not because he has been an idiot but because someone else mentioned that they preferred me thinner. This girl can take a hint. Psyche shattered and self-esteem well below par, I take myself back to the gym. This woman has produced three children, buried family and trekked halfway across the world; it pales in comparison to the Pilates class. I am 20 years older than the other ladies. Good excuse. Oh shit, in walks an octogenarian
in a leotard and I can tell she has been at this game for years. Instinctively I pull in my stomach for fear of ridicule. Why is only my belly crawling over the snazzy gym pants? Mommy gym pants with a little zip pocket at the back for the locker key. So prepared. The exercises end up being manageable, rather pleasant actually. Until I meet… the plank! Forgive me if I have been out in space for the past few decades, but I am unfamiliar with the plank. It requires you to carry your entire weight on your elbows with your legs stretched out behind you until all limbs are shaking so violently you think an earthquake is erupting under your mat. Your ‘core’ is supposed to benefit but my core is screeching and begging for relief. This could be an interesting sexual position but in my first Pilates class, it seemed more like torture. And I had my bum way too high the instructor says – how embarrassing. I have a wobbly core and wobbly legs and unpredictable elbows. The sweat runs down my face and drips off my nose. Longest hour of my life but am getting used to it and keep thinking about the calories sliding from my ‘core.’ Be gone calories. As a treat after such a taxing class, I head straight for Starbucks and a grande, mocha frappachino. Swagger in, looking very hardcore in my gym outfit. The average Pilates class will burn about 250 calories per hour. I know that one frappachino is 290 calories. I know that the maths doesn’t add up. Maybe I should marry the grape. He can be my sugar daddy.

by STAFF REPORTER AFTER over a decade of writing, recording and touring together, Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery have finally recorded their first ever collaborative album. Following an extremely successful string of launches in South Africa, these internationally renowned guitarists will be touring their brand new show through Europe and the UK accompanied by the release of their debut duo album In the Shade of the Wild Fig. In July 2012 they won the prestigious ‘Ovation Award’ for best music act at the South African National Arts Festival. These two virtuosos collaborated on a series of shows in the early and mid-2000s before their respective careers took off,
both locally and internationally, with rigorous individual touring schedules. Their performing paths crossed at a major festival in Toulouse, France, and this inspired a new combination of performances and sowed the seed for doing a full length album together. In The Shade of the Wild Fig showcases their mutual interest and deep love for world music and different folk movements featuring numerous instruments such as the cuatro, mbira, tampura, sitar and various acoustic guitars. Guy has recently been featured in the world’s biggest selling guitar magazine, Guitar Player, which saw him performing at leading guitar festivals throughout Europe, Australia and the USA. He has also just picked up three national awards
including the esteemed SAMA for Best Instrumental Album. In the same vein, Nibs has become a highly acclaimed guitarist, singer and songwriter, being featured in leading publications from France’s Liberation to the UK Guardian. He performs regularly abroad with his biggest support base being in France. Dates: • Halfmoon, Putney, Sunday 9 September. Tickets: www. halfmoon.co.uk/whatson/2012/09 • Greennote, Camden, Tuesday 11 September. Tickets: www. greennote.co.uk. South African distillery puts Scotch on the rocks
The Three Ships Five Years Old won best blended whisky at the 2012 World Whisky Awards, leading some commentators to decry the end of Scotland’s dominance of the market
by STAFF REPORTER WHEN the Three Ships Five Years Old won best blended whisky at the 2012 World Whisky Awards, there followed a degree of introspection in Scotland. The Scotland on Sunday newspaper claimed that “foreign” whiskies had put traditional makers “on the rocks”, as only one Scottish brand picked up an award – for best whisky liqueur. However, at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, South Africa, where Three Ships is distilled, there is no doubt where the main competition still comes from. South Africans, like many around the world, see Scotch as a mark of quality, and the country’s brand remains strong, despite perennial warnings of its decline. Even so, just as New World wines have taken huge market share from European producers, the threat of New World whiskies cannot be ignored. “Although South Africans have always enjoyed consuming whisky
there has been a perception that only the Scots can produce good whisky,” Andy Watts, Master Distiller at the James Sedgwick Distillery, tells Gateway to Africa. “When we first started producing whisky in South Africa back in 1977 then the brands we competed against were almost entirely Scotch whiskies. Therefore the style and characteristics of our whiskies tended to follow the traditional Scottish style. Since 1994 and South Africa’s entrance to the global village, it has become obvious that although the Scots produce outstanding whisky, they do not have the sole right to its distillation. Irish, American and even Japanese whiskies are now freely available. “This has allowed us to adapt and develop our styles and although we have the utmost respect for tradition, being such a young whisky producing nation, we are not held back by it.” While pedigree helps with the branding, in distilling – often a

waiting game – age is an important factor. Lacking the aged whisky that comes with a long history, Watts, who has been master distiller at James Sedgwick for more than two decades, has had to focus on style. “As we are a relatively young whisky producing country we have not had old, aged whiskies to work with so style has always been the main ingredient in whatever whiskies we have created,” he says. “Our warm South African conditions accelerate maturation so we do get surprisingly mature and smooth whiskies at younger ages.” The blend itself – described as “bold and unpretentious” by the judges at the WWA – is the result of a visit to the Isle of Islay, one of the world’s most prestigious whisky regions, by Watts in 1988. He says he “fell in love” with the island and its people – and more importantly, its whisky. Three Ships Five Years Old is an attempt to recreate the taste profile of the island’s single malts.

IBM opens first African research lab by STAFF REPORTER IBM HAS opened a new research facility in Kenya, its first in Africa. The Nairobi laboratory will conduct research into opportunities and challenges specific to the continent, the company said. The lab’s focus will include work on developing tools and standards for the public sector, including e-government and data management; urban management, particularly in the water and transportation sector; and human capacity development, working with African universities to improve the level of technical skills on the continent. “IBM continues to expand its operations in key growth markets and we plan to lead the way by bringing Africa into our global network of IBM Research laboratories,” John E. Kelly III, IBM senior vice president and director of IBM Research, said in a press release. “We plan to work closely with leading African scientists and engineers from academia, government and industry to address some of their most pressing challenges and greatest opportunities.” IBM, like other technology giants, is exploring opportunities in Africa. As the cellphone
revolution took hold in the first decade of the new millennium, international companies woke up to the potential of the continent’s technology markets. The second wave of that revolution has seen global investors and ICT companies take notice of the innovations on the ground. Nairobi has begun to emerge as a leading hub for venture capital and technology design, with an entire “silicon savannah” complex planned at Konza City. Samsung, the Korean technology company, opened an innovation centre in the city in February, adding another in Lagos, Nigeria, in August. “IBM has had a presence in Africa for more than 60 years and we are now taking our presence to a new level,” Anthony Mwai, IBM’s country general manager for East Africa said in a press release. “As we build a great workforce in Africa that is aligned with national goals and help governments and industries envision and build Africa’s future, we are establishing a foundation for IBM’s long-term success.”

Platinum strikes hinder Rand THE Rand opened weaker on Monday morning due to the combination of global risk wariness and concerns over the ailing local economy. It opened at 8.43 to the US Dollar. The continuing labor tensions in the platinum sector continue to be a thorn in the side of the weak Rand. This dispute continued on into the week and is hampering any chances of the Rand recovering any time soon. The Rand continued to trade steady for the rest of the week hovering around the mark of 8.40 to the US Dollar. This was due to the cautious stance everyone was taking ahead of the central banker’s meeting in the United States which was due to signal further easing in the world’s leading economy, boosting the high-yield appeal of emerging markets. Friday saw a slight relief as the Rand firmed against the US Dollar after the Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernake promised that the US central bank would act as needed to boost the world’s biggest
economy and bring down employment. The Rand strengthened almost 1% to 8.48 to the US Dollar, recouping some of its losses from the week long lull. This coming week will be a difficult time for the ZAR again as the platinum sectors deadly strikes continue. There doesn’t seem an end to the discussions and the strike is growing to neighboring mines. This could see the Rand weaken even more this week as investor confidence will diminish until a solution is made to rectify the strikes. Investors will also be keeping a close eye on the PMI data from European countries due for release later in the session to gauge the economic health of the euro zone. Legally Speaking: Spousal visa
Q
: I am currently in the UK on a spousal visa. Due to ill health and unfortunate personal circumstances I could not take the Life in the UK test and will not be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain before running out of time on my spouse visa. I am scared that if I apply for an extension of my spousal visa the new spousal visa rules will apply to me. Can you please confirm whether this will be the case or not?
A
: Fortunately, if you are already in the UK with leave to remain as a spouse or partner and this was granted before 9 July 2012, you will be able to apply for a further two years’ probation under the old spousal visa rules (i.e. the pre-9 July 2012 rules). You will thus not need to meet the

THREE INSIGHTS INTO:
Making Money on the Stock Market BY PAUL HARRISON WITH the evolution of the internet and the volatility of the financial markets, more and more people are feeling it beneficial to educate themselves about taking responsibility for their own investments as opposed to leaving it in the hands of brokers, many of which still get remunerated even if their client loses money. It’s becoming more and more appealing for private individuals to actually learn how to trade on the stock market and be more “hands on” with their investments. Paul Harrison sits down with Marcus de Maria, Owner of Investment Mastery, a company that teaches private individuals to trade their own money on the financial markets, to get his three insights into becoming a successful private trader. Insight 1: It’s more about you than the strategy There is no Holy Grail when it comes to trading strategies. It’s most important that the person who is trading the portfolio actually develops into a trader as opposed to looking for some “secret strategy” that will make them millions. Any advanced traders will make a strategy successful, but a complete beginner can take a very easy strategy and not make money with it. Insight 2: Keep it simple When starting out as a trader, start very simple and very small. Don’t fall into the trap of believing that the more advanced a strategy, the more money it’s going to make
you. Start off with a simple strategy, practise, see what works and what doesn’t and build from there. Insight 3: Make sure you have support We become very aware, very quickly that there is often a world of difference between learning something in theory and actually applying it. It’s times like these that the support of a more advanced trader as a mentor or a coach is invaluable. They can help you see areas to improve on and help you correct mistakes.

our advanced traders are still using free software.
How long does it take to become proficient in trading? This really varies from person to person, how much work they put in and how active they are with their trading. The record that we have for someone who goes from workshop to full-time trader is just four months but normally people can get a pretty good idea of what they are doing in the markets after three to six months What trading software is best? When people are starting out, it’s not really needed to pay for trading software. There are plenty of free programs out there to start off with. Our beginners start with OptionsXpress who have free charting software and a virtual trader (not risking real money) so there is no risk. More advanced traders can buy more advanced platforms but even some of
What happens if the markets crash? It’s crucial to be able to make money regardless of what the current market situation is. Most people know that if markets are going up, you can make money but most people don’t actually realise that you can actually make money when the markets go in a sideways channel or sell off too – this is called “shorting” the market. Making money in all market conditions give you the best chance of trading success. Is your tax situation a mess?
THE GRAFT IS GREENER
Leane Harding | Manager – Assignment Services Born: Wynberg, Cape Town How long in the UK? Going on eight years! Job: Manager – Assignment Services Background: Most of my working life (other than my casual job at Pick n Pay to pay for my Reebok “tekkies”) has been in international expat services. Motto: Take risks, listen to your soul, follow your heart. If you win, you’ll be happy. If you lose, you’ll be wise.
by PAUL HARRISON What do you do in your job? A number of international companies send their staff (the expat) on assignment to other branches around the world. I manage a team who provides expat support in terms of cost to company, international taxes and assignment support.
What is the most exciting thing about your job? Knowing that there is mega scope for growth and that my nationality or race doesn’t come into play. Oh, and the team banter. One has to have banter. What is the most challenging thing about your job? Having to be “fluffy” with most English staff when delivering difficult messages. Tell us an interesting story related to your job? Eish. Not so sure about interesting,
but definitely entertaining. Most of the time, expats are “special people”. Even if they’re just an appy, when they go on assignment, they think they’re the CEO and act that way too. Diivvaasss! Future plans? I’m in the process of getting my British passport, so after that, who knows…. Maybe spend some time back in Cape Town or test the Australian soil. London has been good to me and I love it here, but you’ve got to try everything at least once. Do you think being South African helps you in your job? Without a doubt. I think employers recognise that we are hard workers, we have and use initiative, we don’t shy away from hard work or delivering those difficult messages - although sometimes “too direct” (but not in my opinion!)

London shakes to Zimbabwean rhythms Shingai Shoniwa of The Noisettes and Tuku shared a London stage to celebrate their Zimbabwean musical heritage
by MARY ISOKARIARI LAST month at the BT River of Music Festival, a weekend filled with music from the 204 Olympic nations, Shingai Shoniwa – the frontwoman of The Noisettes, strutted her stuff barefoot on the Africa Stage in a heart-shaped bodice as she belted out catchy tunes ‘Winner’, ‘Don’t Forget the Rhythm’, ‘I Heard You Say’ and their new track ‘That Girl’. Her performance was captivating – surely cementing The Noisettes’ comeback to the music scene,
along with the poignant addition of young singers Grace and Madalo Million from the Jacaranda Orphanage in Malawi, who joined them on stage. Fast forward a month later, and Shingai appeared as a special guest of Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi, the headliner of the HOZA concert at the Indigo at the O2, which took place on Friday 17 August. A first of its kind, it showcased the very best of Zimbabwean and Southern African music across four generations, with the likes of
singers Busi Ncube and Prudence Katomene. Leading up to Tuku’s much anticipated performance was a string of artists; rising startlet Cynthia Mare and young rapper Jay C who happily basked in the female adoration of his screaming fans. Ncube, who can sing in six African languages, seemed right at home as she shook the tambourine and embraced the patriotic audience with a series of ‘follow the leader’ chants. Her vibrant
encore of ‘True Love’ whetted my appetite for more. D’Banj’s infectious track ‘Oliver Twist’ and the thundering applause introduced Mtukudzi to the stage. From playing his guitar to showing off some dance moves with his bassist, Tuku put on an energetic performance paying homage to his native country. The atmosphere was electric and Tuku’s smile was broad when he was hnoured for his contribution to music by boxing champion Evander Holyfield.
The crowd’s excitement escalated as Shingai sang backing vocals to ‘Hear me Lord’, ‘Madiro’ and ‘Senzeni.’ Having her sharing the same stage as Tuku, and paying homage to her Zimbabwean heritage, was a momentous tribute to the musical talent the country has produced across different generations. A reminder of what is yet to come from Zimbabwe. TheSouthAfrican.com/ Zimbabwe
UK pledges support to small-scale farmers in Zimbabwe
The UK’s support aims to create jobs in Zimbabwe. Photo by Swathi Sridharan.
by JONATHAN WALDHEIM The United Kingdom has made a pledge to support small-scale farmers in Zimbabwe in order to help increase their overall yield and to help them find lucrative markets for their produce. Indranil Chakrabarti, programme manager for governance, wealth creation and vulnerability for the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) stated last week at the Agro-Initiative Zimbabwe (AIZ) that the support was meant to create jobs as well as raise income for the poor in Zimbabwe. The programme is being
implemented by TechnoServe Zimbabwe, which will offer support in the revitalisation of the micro-finance sector through providing revolving loans to small and medium size businesses, primarily in the agricultural market. Chakrabarti stated that “A growing private sector will not only provide the poor with the capacity to find jobs and improve their incomes, it will ultimately enable governments in developing countries to generate the tax revenues needed to support their people.” The new pledge has come as a
welcome surprise following the rocky relationship between the UK and Zimbabwe in recent years. In 2012 AIZ have already awarded various entreprises including The Veg Entreprises, Progene Seeds (PvT) Ltd and Staywell Trading prizes of seed capital of US$50 000 and technical assistance tailored uniquely for those businesses. Zimbabwean Finance Minister Tendai Biti has said that the agricultural sector has a central role in the economic well-being of the country. With statistics showing that it accounts for 70% of the income for the country’s population.

Jewel in the crown of Provence
East of Avignon is ‘Les Dentelles de Montmirail’, a haven for rock climbers and mountain bikers, boasting beautiful villages and dining for the laid back visitor by JONATHAN WALDHEIM PROVENCE has been one of the top destinations in Europe for many years. With its beautiful scents, exquisite food and the laidback charm of the locals there is no chance it will slip from this spot any time soon. What you probably didn’t know is that Provence offers a range of top quality climbing and cycling, perfect for those who are keen to stay active while on holiday in the sun. Thirty miles east of Avignon stands the rocky formation of ‘Les Dentelles de Montmirail’, a chain of foothills carved out in limestone, situated in the hilly
‘Departement de Vaucluse’. Sandwiched between the charming towns of Gigondas, Beaumes-deVenise and Malaucene these white rocks offer a range of climbing for both beginners and experts, often within metres of each other. The small village of Lafare, which sits in the valley, is home to the ‘Salle des Dentelles’ where all your needs are provided for. This information centre will give you all the information that you need, whether you would like to hire climbing equipment, learn to climb or hire mountain bikes to bike the trails around the area, the activity options are as diverse as the landscape itself.
Vaucluse is dominated by the Mont Ventoux, yet ‘Les Dentelles’ are a more spectacular sight. Cycle to the hilltop villages of Suzette or La Roque Alric to witness the glowing sunset casting enormous shadows across the vineyards, famous for producing the Muscat de Beaumes-De-Venise or take a walk through the valley St Christophe and see the spectacular cascades. The roads are windy and sometimes steep, but always interesting with spectacular views or elegant vineyards around each corner. For the cultural enthusiast the local town of Vaison-La-Romaine offers the sight of genuine Roman ruins, often with local amateur dramatic societies performing plays in the amphitheatre. Vaison offers a series of good quality dining options and the chance to sample escargot in any one of the small restaurants lining the busy streets is a must for any Francophile. In terms of accommodation, there are plenty of Gites which offer rooms at a reasonable price or the chance to hire a house in the picturesque villages in the area – unbeatable in terms of authentic French experience. In particular, La Roque Alric is able to offer a Provencal dining experience in its cute little restaurant ‘L’Acacia en Provence’. Eat, drink, climb and cycle in

Proteas quick to lose top ODI ranking Proteas go to the top, but three days later find themselves down to third
by WESLEY MCKAY REACHING the pinnacle of any sport takes a Herculean effort, but as they say, once you’ve reached that point, staying there is even harder. That certainly appears to be the case with the Proteas one-day cricket team. After reaching the number one position in the world by defeating England last Tuesday, the Proteas followed that with two impotent performances, losing by four and six wickets respectively to slip down the ranking to third by Sunday, behind India and England. Now I know it’s very early to start criticising our cricket team, I mean, they’re only number one in two out of the three formats of the game and third in the other, including owning the coveteted status of top-rated Test match side in the world. But the nature in which the Proteas lost their last two games will certainly concern the Saffa cricketing community. The batting performances thus far have not been good enough and if not for the indomitable Hashim Amla grinding out runs in reasonably bowler-friendly
MIND THE RUCK ROB FLUDE
Pumas’ draw great for rugby
I’VE had a week to digest the Boks’ 16-all draw against Argentina in Mendoza, and can’t help but feel far more excitement for the Pumas than dismay at the Boks. If the Olympics and Paralympics have taught us anything, it is that sometimes in life we have to cast aside our own achievements and aspirations and let others have their place in the sun at our expense, all for the betterment of the sport. Oscar Pistorius has been the flag-bearer for disabled athletes for a number of years now - and just so you know, I disagree with the word “disabled” as it’s a ridiculous term if one considers these athletes’ feats. However, his competing in the able-bodied
conditions – including some help from poor England catching – the Proteas could easily find themselves losing the series 3-1 after the final game at Trent Bridge on Wednesday. The uncompetitve totals set by the Protea batsmen have made the job for South Africa’s bowling attack extremely difficult. Sunday’s ODI at Lord’s saw Dale Steyn consistently hitting 90 mph, the effort in his attempt to drag his side back in to the match was present for all to see. So questions do need to be asked about team selection. The batting line-up, particularly the middle order, seems a bit lightweight, especially taking into account that it’s up against a strong England bowling line-up. Wayne Parnell is a talented bowler, but he is certainly not a number seven batsman and with no genuine bighitter in the side, the batsmen have been unable to set competitive enough totals for the bowlers to defend. Playing Duminy at six or seven is the right place for him, but he
needs someone like Albie Morkel coming in after him and then only the likes of Parnell, Steyn and co. The other questionable tactic is the switching around of the batting lineup. Someone like Hashim Amla could probably get away with batting anywhere, such are the man’s skills, but the chopping and changing of Duminy, Du Plessis, De Villiers and Elgar up and down the order surely can’t help. Flexibility is important – and we’re quick to harp on about how previous Protea teams were too rigid – but these guys clearly don’t know their roles. At the moment, there are pretty much three teams at the top of the world rankings: India, England and the Proteas. There is not really much between these sides, a small reminder for the Proteas that they still have a way to go to become the true and outright number one team. Perhaps Gary, Biff and the okes have got it all under control. We’ll give them a little slack for now seeing as they’ve done so well to get where they are. Besides, we’ll
– once again, a ridiculous term – Olympics smashed down a myriad of barriers, and has paved the way for athletes such as him to be treated as regular human beings, which they should have been in the first place. Pistorius, in losing his final in the 200 metres, has in effect handed the baton on to another athlete to “fight the good fight”, someone who probably didn’t believe it would be possible before, and stimulating an exponential effect in raising the profile of other such athletes. In watching the Boks stumble from one ruck to the next, seemingly disinterested and/or confused about which gameplan they were meant to be playing, I progressed through the match more interested in watching how Argentina played. Their spirit in the tackle and breakdown was immense, and their desire to spread the ball from depth and not kick it away was profound. In Cape Town, they committed murder at the breakdown and got away with it, which I felt was negative. But that is because at Newlands they didn’t believe they could win and the occasion of their Rugby Championship debut got to them. In Mendoza, with 45,000 delirious spectators behind them, they believed they could upset a
team against whom they had never won. And it almost happened. The Boks got off to a horrid start, indeed before a ball was even kicked. Ras Dumisani’s wannabe twin just about butchered the anthem near the end and it was to signal the Boks’ average performance. Argentina, one could see, was genuinely excited about being in this tournament. The breakdown was again our area of weakness and the Pumas did their homework. Until Heyneke Meyer recalls a now fit Heinrich Brussow, we are going to get found out rapidly quite soon. Even the Wallabies struggled without David Pocock, and so Meyer’s assessment that a fetcher is a penalty-laden has-been, is wrong. Jake White took 9 matches to realise he was wrong. Hopefully Meyer sees the light soon without sacrificing too much of his desire to have a big back row. It’s all about combinations, remember. Argentina have a talismanic captain in Juan Fernandez Lobbe, and he is the epitome of Pumas rugby: daring, brave and tough. Sadly, it seems like the Boks haven’t evolved since 2009 under Peter de Villiers, and Lobbe and co will be keen to be the new flagbearer for other so-called minnows around the world.

leave the ‘placing on a pedestal only to knock you off later’ mentality to the Poms. Maintaining the levels of play they have until recently will be a real test for this group of players and staff. Lets
hope they haven’t preaked too early and still have more room to improve. Remember it is still three years to the next World Cup and that should be the ultimate goal for any South African cricket lover.

FINAL PUSH FOR TEAM SA THIS WEEK
Paralympians seek more gold in final week of competition
A
by ROB FLUDE FTER a superb first week at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Team South Africa entered the second week in 19th place on the medals table, with a haul of 10 medals, comprising two golds, and four each of silver and bronze. There are still a number of gold medal hopefuls in the team, and we bring you the list of who to keep an eye out for this week. Athletics Oscar Pistorius, having been beaten into second place in the T44 200m event, will be looking to defend his Paralympic titles in the T44 100m and 400m sprints. Round one of the 100m is on Wednesday at 19:01, while the final is the next evening at 21:16. His showpiece event however is the 400m, and one he is expected to win as he has put more emphasis in his training into that distance. He will compete in round 1 on Friday at 21:20 and the final on Saturday at 21:36. While it is easy to be conscious of only Pistorius, one should not forget Arnu Fourie, who will also compete in the T44 100m race. Fourie broke the T44 world record in the 200m during the final, however he finished 4th overall. For those who are confused about that, the T43 athletes (doubleamputees such as Pistorius) competed in the T44 final and finished in the top three spots.
Charl Bouwer (left) set a new African record of 52.97 in the S13 men’s 100m freestyle, earning himself a silver medal to go with his gold in the S13 50m freestyle.
52-year old Michael Louwrens will compete in the F57/58 shot put final on Tuesday at 10:00, while Ntombizanele Situ will look to get a medal in the F54/55/56 javelin throw on Wednesday at 19:00. Dyan Buis, the man from
the tiny Western Cape town of Riversdale who has already won silver in the T38 100m event, is in two events this week. On Wednesday at 19:05, he takes part in the T38 long jump, and on Friday he will be competing in the
