PECULATION is mounting over the ‘suspiciously’ cosy relationship between the British government and the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Speaking to News24 last week, a senior ANC official stated that the South African government had concerns about Britain and other European governments siding with the DA. The source continued that the DA were developing strategic international relationships to strengthen their planned government takeover after the 2019 or 2024 general elections.

Recent meetings between Western Cape premier and DA party leader Helen Zille and various UK government representatives in London earlier this month have fuelled suspicions of a ‘plot’.

An article by this newspaper reporting Zille’s address to the South African Chamber of Commerce, in which she said that the ANC would split in the next seven years, reportedly added to ANC concerns.

Shake-up at SAA’s UK headquarters At a big relauch event in London, South African Airways UK head admits the airline made some mistakes but wants to move forward with the help of a brand new commercial team

GARY Kershaw, UK & Ireland General Manager of South African Airways (SAA), has admitted the airline has “made mistakes” but wants to put it “firmly back on the map”.

He was speaking last Thursday at Riverside Studios in London at a glitzy event called Tshimologo (a Setswana word meaning ‘new beginnings’) to showcase SAA’s renewed focus and welcome its new UK commercial and marketing team.

Kershaw, who joined SAA 18 months ago from Air New Zealand, said, “Tonight’s about building bridges. We’ve not been too clever as an airline, we’ve disengaged ourselves from the industry.

We don’t want to be the airline that says no. In terms of where we are, yes, we made some mistakes but we have a new bus, and there

are new people on the bus.”

Over the past few months Kershaw has been recruiting a new team to lead the airline, which includes many high profile individuals with several decades of combined experience in the aviation industry.

“To get the bus where we want it to go we need have the right people in the right seats. And that is why I’m incredibly excited and proud to introduce the new team we’ve assembled. They consist of highly experienced individuals who are experts in the aviation industry,” he said.

“Our goal is to be the best aviation commercial team in the UK, bar none. The new team will be working hard building key relationships with our partners and put SAA firmly back on the map,” Kershaw said as he introduced several key people to an audience of travel industry partners.

ANC suspects DA & UK government ‘plot’

Last month, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg appointed former DA CEO and special adviser to Zille, Ryan Coetzee, as his strategy advisor.

“There is something deeper than meets the eye and South African security has to analyse that,” the government official said.

Another high-ranking ANC official likened the ‘plot’ between the DA and the British to the British backing of Zimbabwe’s MDC to overthrow Zanu PF’s ‘hostile’ government.

In response to its suspicions the government’s State Security Agency has increased its surveillance in an effort to combat “aggressive onslaughts” from foreign governments conspiring with the DA and other political parties.

Zille dismissed the claims as absurd saying, “Is someone occupying a parallel universe

somewhere? Or is this part of the ongoing ‘Zanufication’ of the ANC?” She affirmed that all of the DA’s international relations were “professional, as with all other governments with which South Africa has diplomatic relationships.” While in London she also met with High Commissioner Zola Skweyiya from whom “positive feedback every time.”

The DA previously accused the state of spying on their party.

Brian Dube, a State Security spokesperson, said the agency “is guided by a need to uphold national security guided by the constitution and national laws.

In this regard, the agency does not interfere in normal political activities.”

SA banker jumps to death from City building Wealthy South African-born banker Nico Lambrechts, a 46-year-old married father of three, plunged 80 feet through the No 1 Poultry building’s internal atrium in front of horrified lunchtime diners and shoppers

NICO Lambrechts, a successful South African investment analyst who worked at Investec Asset Management, jumped to his death a week ago from the open air restaurant at the top of the No 1 Poultry building in London.

Last Thursday, according to the Evening Standard, the City banker took a lift up to the Coq D’Argent and plunged 80 feet through the building’s internal atrium in front of horrified diners and shoppers.

Witnesses said they heard a ‘loud bang’ as Lambrechts hit the

ground near Bank tube station. The Telegraph reported that medics reached him within minutes but were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene.

This was the fourth death at Sir Terence Conran’s restaurant since

the financial crash in 2007.

Lambrechts, a 46-year-old married father of three, allegedly lived in a £2 million home in Surrey and took his family on exotic holidays.

The banker’s sister-in-law told The Telegraph, “He was a

wonderful man and that is why this is such a devastating blow for my sister and the family. He will be so missed and this is all so difficult to come to terms with.”

The inquest into Lambrechts’ death was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

TOUGHER implementation of tax rules by HM Revenue and Customs has resulted in more tax on high-paid foreigners working in investment banking and hedgefund sectors. According to an investigation by law firm Pinsent Masons, the taxman has raised £20 million more in revenue over the last two years; that is a 23% increase on last year bringing the total revenue take to £117 million.

The more aggressive measures come as the UK government attempts to clamp down on tax avoidance and reduce the budget deficit, which according to some analysts is likely to stand at £127 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

“HMRC is really cracking down on highly paid expats, most of whom are working in investment banks and hedge funds,” said Ray McCann, Tax Lawyer and Pinsent Masons’ Director. “Foreign expats have always been a high yielding target, and with the HMRC trying to boost its revenue it’s not surprising they’re targeting lowhanging fruit.”

The tax crackdown has been enforced even though “the number of investment bankers in the UK and their bonuses has been slashed

since the credit crunch,” said McCann.

The rules particularly affect non-domiciles who live and work in the UK for lengthy stints. “For example, if a worker comes to the UK intending to work for a few weeks, the employer can pay for their accommodation tax free.

McCann said. “But if the stay is extended to the point HMRC views it as permanent but tax setup is not changed, the taxman swoops.” He added, “The Eurozone crises and the economic downturn have really depressed investment banking revenues, so HMRC has had to put in a lot of extra effort to increase its take from these investigations.”

Earlier this year, the South African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced a R1.06 trillion budget for 2012-2013, the highest in South Africa’s history. However, the South African government faces similar fiscal challenges of its own with national budget deficit reported at R97.5billion at the end of August after growth restrictions resulting from the eurozone crisis and the global credit crunch. The South African budget deficit is forecast to stand at 4.6% of GDP by the end of the fiscal year.

Team Shebeen swims Forth in memory of SA friend The 2km, hour and 40-minute swim raised funds for a Scottish Veterans Charity, in memory of SA expat Jeni Ayris, who was killed in Kabul

LAST Sunday afternoon Team Shebeen, which included the owner of a South African bar in Edinburgh, swam across the icy Scottish waters of the Firth of Forth.

The 2km, hour and 40-minute swim from North Queensferry to South Queensferry raised funds for Erskine, a Scottish Veterans Charity, in memory of South African expat Jeni Ayris, who was killed in the suicide bomb attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 18 September 2012.

Ayris had lived in Edinburgh for 17 years and was a friend to many

in the Edinburgh South African community. The 48-year-old ran the Ndebele cafe in the Scottish capital for 11 years before it closed in 2008. Last year she took a job as a customer relations manager for an aircraft charter company in Kabul last year but was one of 12 people, eight of whom were South African, who were killed in an attack on a minibus. Islamist group Hezb-eIslami claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for an allegedly anti-Muslim film produced in America.

TEAM Shebeen was founded a few months ago by Ian Hudson, the owner of Shebeen Bar, and includes

himself and four others: fellow South Africans Daros Gray and Esti Shackleton, as well as David Macleod and Lucas Yeats.

Ayris’s sister Pat and several friends attended Sunday’s event to cheer on the five plucky swimmers.

Event organiser Gavrielle KirkCohen said, “The swimmers said the water was freezing and they struggled with the current but they still managed it in a respectable time.

They now hope to make it an annual event held in Ayris’s memory and are also planning a range of other fund-raising events for local charities.

Wel, ons gunsteling SA winkel het weer snoek ingekry en die beloftes van maande gelede moes toe nagekom word. Die Somer is verby en voor die jaar sy knak maak, moes ons ‘n blink lyfie oor die kole gooi. Ek kan myself nie as ‘n kenner van snoekbraai uitgee nie, daarvoor is ek te jonk en te lank weg van my Weskus wortels, maar ‘n groentjie is ek ook nie.

Daar’s mos boeppens Ooms wat bae meer as ek weet, hulle staan elke naweek kaalvoet voor die kole en draai bekwaam daai vissie.

Draai, hoor ek jou vra! Ja, die Weskus manier van snoekbraai is op ‘n oop vuur en ‘n toe-klap rooster. Jy draai en smeer tot hy goud-bruin is, dan is hy reg vir die tafel, wyn en Sandveld patats.

Maar wag laat ek van voor begin en vertel soos ek geleer is…

Not Ground Zero; call it Place of Pride

A WEEK ago today I stood humbled at what was once the North and South Towers of the World Trade Centre.

Some people were quiet. Others wept silently or talked in muted tones to one another and then there were those blithering munchkins who practically fell into the abyss trying to get just the right picture of themselves grinning at the sight of such awful tragedy. They should have been drowned at birth; it brings out the ‘not more stupid people’ rage in me.

The last time I remember having this was in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Those poor security guards going ‘ No pictures, no pictures’ to deaf ears – the short-wired specimens felt it more important to take seven thousand pictures of art that crumbles with every flash. I wonder how many times they look at their own contribution to the demise of priceless art? Anyway I digress.

I am the Optimist so must not dwell on silly people and just how sad it is to be at Ground Zero.

Then I remembered one clever New Yorker telling me that it is not Ground Zero.The words imply that there is nothing there. New Yorkers refer to it as One Trade Centre. The day America was brought to its knees. Reduced to zero. But not for long.

Now the Towers rise again.

Skyscrapers form a protective circle around the Memorial Pools where life changed forever. A new pride rises with the Phoenix and water quells the fires. New Yorkers are a small nation on their own. One can almost feel the swelling pride emanating from the local police, the fire fighters and the port staff. To the locals these uniformed men and women are

Why can we South Africans never find a common goal? When will the flag make everyone proud; when South Africans are South Africans first and Afrikaans, Xhosa and Sotho second? Will we ever feel as if we belong and are proud to be citizens of a country we put first and egos last? Many people will ridicule national pride, but being at that sad place, I need national pride.

I would have been proud to be an American. Wish I could always feel the same about what I am.

Sommige mense gooi ook suurlemoensap in, maar ek verkies om dit saam met die snoek te bedien. So kan hul self besluit hoeveel byt hy moet hê.

4. Werk so ‘n klein bietjie fynpeper in sy vleis.

With this weather at the moment, don’t turn to comfort food, try and stick to healthy, well-prepared food. Using fresh and seasonal vegetables whenever possible. If the soup is too thick for your liking then feel free to add a little stock or cream to thin it down.

For the soup: • 3 red peppers • Olive oil for drizzling • 1.2kg ripe plum tomatoes • 2 shallots, peeled and sliced • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 1 potato, peeled and cubed • 1 tbsp tomato puree • 1 handful of basil leaves • Sugar to taste • Balsamic glaze to taste • 4 rashers of streaky bacon For the basil pesto: • 50g basil leaves • 200ml olive oil • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 35g parmesan cheese, grated • 30g pine nuts

Method:

To make the soup: • Pre-heat the oven on grill setting • Cut the peppers in half; place flesh side down on a lined roasting tray and drizzle with some olive oil • Place under the grill for roughly 10 minutes or until the skin is char grilled and beginning to split • Once done, remove from the oven and place in a small mixing bowl, cover tightly with cling film and put aside to cool • Pre-heat the oven to 200°C • Cut the tomatoes in half and place in a roasting tray with the sliced shallots and garlic • Drizzle with olive oil and roast in the oven for 30 minutes • Using a medium saucepan, cook the potatoes in salted water until soft, drain through a colander and put aside • Once the tomatoes have softened and caramelised, roughly stir in the tomato puree and basil, place back in the oven for a further 5 minutes • Remove the cooled red peppers from the bowl and very gently remove all the skin from them

• Discard the skin and the excess seeds • Place the cooked tomatoes, red peppers and potatoes in a blender and blend till smooth • Season with the balsamic glaze, salt, pepper and a bit of sugar • In a separate frying pan, fry the bacon in a little oil until crisp and then finely chop To make the pesto: • Blend together all the ingredients and season to taste • The pesto should have a rough texture and a dribbling consistency To serve, sprinkle with the chopped bacon and a drizzle of pesto.

In the latest music video for Die Antwoord single “Fatty Boom Boom” a Gaga impersonator - clad in a robe of steak - tours a Johannesburg township, encountering a myriad of misfortunes, each alluding to the ‘beef’ Die Antwoord has with Lady Gaga and her record label Interscope, which Yolandi Vi$$er and Ninja used to be affiliated with.

Towards the end, Lady Gaga ends up at a local dentist-cumgynaecologist, where she births a grotesque ooze-covered Parktown Prawn, a reference to the diva’s single “Born This Way.” After

leaving the clinic, the panicstricken Gaga ‘meats’ her fate in a grisly manner.

Following the release of the video on Tuesday, she tweeted her disgust at the zef rappers, mimicking their own lyrics, “I fink u freaky but you don’t have a hit. hundred thousand tickets sold in

SA. #thatsmys**t... i guess its not a good idea to tell someone you’re a fan. never mind! we get it, you’re not a little monster.”

SA well-represented at Film Africa Festival 2012

There are many South African films in this 10-day celebration of the best African films from across countries and genres. It will showcase 70 fiction, documentary, short and experimental films, 27 of which have never been seen in London before

by STAFF REPORTER FILM Africa, London’s biggest film festival devoted to African film returns for the second year running for a 10-day celebration of the best African films from across countries and genres.

Running from 1 to 11 November, it will showcase 70 fiction, documentary, short and experimental films (27 of which have never been seen in London before) in venues across London.

Hackney Picturehouse and The Ritzy host the festival in collaboration with Rich Mix, Screen on the Green, BFI Southbank and the South London Gallery.

London is one of the biggest homes for African communities outside of the continent. The first results from the 2011 UK census reveal that black Africans are one of the fastest growing communities in Britain and that the mixed race population has also risen from 80,700 (2001) to 131,800 (2009).

There is a large number of South African films in the festival. These include: Uhlanga: The Mark A tale of victimisation and its inspirational overcoming, Uhlanga: The Mark is one of the most astounding films to have come out of South Africa in the past year. Khaba is a young man who, with his mother and sisters, has to flee to a new home after his father is killed. Bullied at school and excluded by a superstitious community, Khaba forges a seemingly unlikely alliance with a well-to-do girl who is hiding her own dark secret. The film’s visuals are strikingly original, the cast of newcomers offer stellar performances, and the soundtrack brims with energy in this immersive and atmospheric film.

Zulu Love Letter Thandeka (Pamela Nomvete) is a former political activist and journalist with a broken marriage and a deaf daughter. Hardened and cynical, her life is forced to change when she is approached by

Me’Tau, an old woman who asks Thandeka to find her daughter’s remains.

Difficult Love An intimate insight into the difficult lives and loves of lesbians in contemporary South Africa, one of the most homophobic nations on earth despite gay rights being enshrined in its constitution.

Inside Story This drama follows the inspiring story of young Kenyan footballer Kalu, who moves to South Africa to join a club there. We witness his attempts to rise to the top while dealing with the challenges of HIV, and falling in love with Ify, the daughter of his coach. Over the past 20 years Hucker has built up extensive offshore financial industry experience and joined Standard Bank in 2011 as Chief Risk Officer. With responsibility for the bank’s risk management framework across three jurisdictions, Jersey, Isle of Man and Mauritius, he has played a key role at director level across the offshore group including asset management, trust, operations and fund administration.

THE Rand appreciated for the second week running as strikes in the mining sector eased and miners returned to work.

Foreign investors were net buyers of R3 billion ($347 million) in the first four days of this week, following R1.5 billion of outflows the previous week (Bloomberg).

Between 15 and 19 October one pound fetched between R13.88 and R14.15. The Rand also fetched between R8.59 and R8.80 to the

US Dollar, and one Euro fetched between R11.27 and R11.40.

The Rand started the past week on the back foot against major currencies, but remained relatively flat during Friday’s trade as traders were still worried about mining strikes.

THREE INSIGHTS INTO: Getting a better paying job

by PAUL HARRISON MANY people believe that they should be paid more in their job.

We asked recruitment expert Rachel Bradman, owner of Naked Recruitment, to get her best insights into the topic.

Insight 1: Be realistic, value yourself in the marketplace… but don’t be greedy Think like a business owner. If you were to ask your current or new employer for a higher salary than you are getting now, then ask yourself why they should consider this. If applying for a position in a new company, is the role sufficiently different to your present job to justify an increase in salary? For instance, a PA or engineer in one company, may be performing a very different type of position to a PA or engineer in another. Does the new position allow you to demonstrate skills or qualifications you have acquired since starting your current role, or will you be taking on more tasks than presently? If not, it does not automatically mean you are entitled to more money. If the role is not taking you to a level that

justifies an increase in salary then reach for one that does.

Insight 2: Can you gain qualifications in an area that will be valued by a company?

Any employer would be delighted to hear you wish to increase your value to the company with further qualifications and will take note of the time investment you are willing to make. Be it your current or new employer, could they assist you with study fees or enhance any practical elements of the qualification by providing you with tasks related to your assignments?

Could they offer you a salary increase once you have passed?

Worst case: once you have these qualifications you will be of even more value to another company even if your own employer doesn’t see it that way! If your employer doesn’t value the investment you’re prepared to make it is never a waste of time to invest in yourself for the future.

Insight 3: Get current!

If applying at a new company, check out their employee profiles on LinkedIn. This way you’ll see the background and calibre of

individuals they employ, which will in turn help you justify your ideal salary requirements to them.

Go onto job boards and look at adverts relevant to the type of job you are seeking. This is a great way to see what employers are needing from candidates in those positions offering the higher salary you seek. Job boards also have fantastic “salary checker” tools, as well as a range of excellent articles and other tools to help you raise your game.

Rachel Bradman answers Neil McCabe’s questions on job interviews Neil McCabe is a South African based in London who is keen to get a change of career.

What are the most important things employers are looking for when interviewing candidates?

Being punctual shows respect to the company and an ability to organise yourself. Being well presented is a strong reflection of how much pride you take in your work. Employers do not expect you to regurgitate their mission statement, yet will notice the effort you have made to learn about them, their sector and the position you are interviewing for. Make sure you know your CV and accomplishments and can succinctly talk about your career to date. Be clear on reasons for leaving and any gaps in your employment. While they need to see you already possess skill sets critical to the role, as importantly they look for the willingness, motivation and initiative to take on any parts of the position you may not yet have had exposure to.

I often get nervous before an interview - is there something I can do for this?

One of the most helpful exercises is to remind yourself it is as much your decision to take the position as it is theirs to offer it to you. With this mindset you will go into the meeting feeling more like an equal and more relaxed. Secondly, by adopting

travel arrangements you need to make. Allow double the time you estimate to get there. Better to be an hour early than rushed, in a panic or worst of all, late!

the “we are equals” mindset, you will find it easier to prepare yourself by thinking beforehand about what you want to discover during the interview to ensure the company and position are right for you and equally what is it about you and your aspirations you want the employer to know by the end of the interview. This preparation will help your responses to their questions sound natural and will ensure your questions about them sound relevant. Finally, do a practice journey to the venue before the interview, if you can. If that’s not possible, plan your journey in advance so you know exactly what

Everyone has different needs so ask yourself what will make you happy. Some people can work in any environment as long as they are doing a job they love, while for others it could be the dream role yet the culture of the company eradicates any enjoyment. If career advancement is what makes you happy, does the company offer investment in professional and personal development so you can reach your goals and is there a clear career path? If a work/ life balance is important to you. Will the commute allow for this? by JEREMY KUPER WHILE the internet is rife with discussion about Apple’s fifth iteration of its iPhone handset, another launch at the other end of the market shows that there remains huge potential in low cost devices that bring new customers to telecommunications products.

With less fanfare, Samsung launched its Chief Hero handset, specifically designed for African markets. Its range of features shows a very different set of requirements from Apple’s latest model, whose 10 hour battery life alone would disqualify it from competition, were its £500 price tag not out of the reach of many of the continent’s customers.

Getting the right mix of function and affordability could be a lucrative proposition. Mobile phone penetration has been rising consistently for the past five years, and there are still hundreds of millions of consumers set to enter the market in the next decade.

Several of the major manufacturers have released stripped-down or low-cost models to appeal to a low-income mass market.

Voice and SMS are still massive opportunities in African markets, where cellphones have taken the place of moribund – or nonexistent – fixed line services.

As operators invest in more advanced networks, the market for smartphones is also taking off. Chinese manufacturer HTC is among the companies aiming to grab market share with lowcost handsets thatGolf offerChallenge African print Nedbank consumers data services on the move. Nokia also released its “Asha” range of smartphones into some markets this summer.

With the attention around Apple, it is easy to forget that its early competitor in the smartphone market, Research In Motion – maker of the Blackberry – is still a major player in Africa. In September, the firm opened its first branded store in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, and announced a range of initiatives

aimed at cementing its place in the country’s expanding entrepreneurial class.

1. Price While income levels in many African cities are rising quickly, many markets remain very price sensitive. Handsets are not necessarily just competing with the latest device – second-hand Nokia phones are still widely available, and more rugged models survive for years. The price point on any new handset has to be compelling enough to compete in a market flooded with older devices and counterfeits.

2. Brand Counterfeit products remain a serious problem for importers and manufacturers across the continent, and today fake versions of mainstream handsets are available in major markets. In September the Kenyan government took a stand against the problem, making it illegal for network operators to activate counterfeit devices from October. The government estimates that as many as 3 million fake handsets are in the market, and companies, including Nokia, are backing drives to filter them out. A phone for African markets needs a strong brand and ways to guarantee its authenticity.

3. Languages The Chief Hero supports African languages, including Swahili, Igbo and Yoruba, an important sign that the manufacturer ad.Page 1 21/9/12 considers 11:16:47 the individual markets of the continent to be significant enough to justify investment in tailoring its offering.

This will increasingly be important – making sure that products are designed and customised specifically for African markets, rather than being the next best product that fits the opportunity.

4. Dual SIMs Calling across networks without attracting additional charges is commonplace in developed

markets, but in some African countries it continues to be expensive. That, along with bargainhunting consumers picking up cheap deals offered by networks that are fighting for customers in high-churn markets, means that many people have two or more SIM cards. Typically, they have switched the SIMs manually, but, wise to this quirk of the market, several manufacturers, including Samsung, have equipped their handsets with two slots.

5. Battery Life The notoriously short battery life of the iPhone would not wash in Africa. The new Samsung Chief Hero can stay on standby for a massive 550 hours, or 11 hours of talk time. This is an important feature for a phone which is to be sold into markets with weak power infrastructure. With many businesses and homes relying on generators in urban areas, and few households connected at all in rural regions, the ability for a phone to work without the need for constant recharging is vital.

by STAFF REPORTER NAIROBI’S Ngong Road is a far cry from Silicon Valley’s highways, but the brands clustering along the route are increasingly of global stature.

IBM, the international technology company, is the latest to open a new research and innovation laboratory in the city – and working on the tangle of traffic is one of the company’s first challenges.

One major focus of the lab will be “How can you use technology to make more effective decisions”, Nick Redshaw, the company’s general manager for North and Central Africa, told Gateway to Africa. This includes systems for aggregating data from the city’s CCTV cameras and from cellphones to try to ease traffic pinch points.

IBM has been involved in East Africa for decades, and created its first regional office in Nairobi

in 2009, supplying services to the financial services and telecoms sector. The $9 billion acquisition of Zain Africa by Indian group Bharti Airtel also saw one of IBM’s big clients enter the market, and the company duly won a multi-country outsourcing deal on the continent.

Cognoscent of the potential of its growing reputation as a technology hub, the Kenyan government is driving a ‘Vision 2030’ plan to build up its knowledge industry, and public sector support was a key factor in deciding to place the Africa research lab in Nairobi, Redshaw said. “It continues to be an attractive investment destination,” he said. “Kenya seems to be one of the more advanced innovation hubs that we see in Africa.”

When did you move to England?

I came out in 1977. It was the week that Steve Biko was buried, and I felt very uncomfortable about living as a white person in South Africa at that time so I came out with very little, just a pile of photographs. No job, no money, just hopes and dreams.

You did a number of things before you set up your own photography business and it still took more than a decade before you managed to return to freelance photography.

That’s right. I worked initially for a printer, then I set up a photo lab and a special effects company, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s when I made my first trip back to South Africa, I took some photos on a safari holiday. When I came back I decided to completely change my career and start writing books about wildlife.

around the world. Initially I decided to write a book called In Praise of Primates, where I photographed the three great apes, chimpanzees, gorillas and orang-utans in the wild. That book, my first, sold a quarter of a million copies in 10 languages, and spurred me to move on to my second book called Untamed, which took 10 years to do. I went to every continent, and it was a giant 400-page tome recording endangered wildlife and documenting how quickly the world was changing.

That was followed by more books and “Spirit of the Wild”, a big outdoor exhibition I’ve held in 12 cities, with 100 pictures in a city centre.

In Copenhagen, for example there were 1.4 million visitors apparently the most visited photo exhibition in Denmark’s history.

I’ve written about 15 books.

The last few have been children’s books. The latest one was published about a month ago, so at the moment I’m doing a book tour promoting that. The one thing I have had the opportunity to do is a huge amount of worldwide travel, and to make a career out of it.

What was the hardest thing about leaving South Africa?

For a long time I missed South Africa terribly. It was things like the smell of the fynbos. I grew up in Cape Town.

that I missed for many, many years, and it was only after I was able to go back in the early 1990s that I was able to work through it.

What’s your new children’s book called?

It’s called My Polar Animal Journey. It’s written in the form of a journal, and I explain to the reader what it’s like photographing wildlife in both the polar regions, north and south, and it also has tips on photography, so it teaches the kids how to approach wildlife, and how to be creative in ways to photograph.

What is your proudest achievement?

I suppose it’s having completely changed my career at the age of 40, and writing all these books in all these languages, and being able to communicate to a large number of people through my photography.

I’m in talks with Victoria Borisova-Ollas, a Russian composer in Sweden, about doing a collaboration with her where I will produce a film of my images, and she’ll compose a piece of music to go with that.

I’m developing an interactive iPad app. I’ve got a photo tour of Tanzania coming up. I’m judging photography competitions and putting together a regional lecture tour.

Malema gives Zanu-PF friends $6,000 wedding gift

Julius Malema, who owes R16m in tax charges and was reportedly declared broke earlier this year, gave Zimbabwean friends a cash gift of $6000 for their wedding, so they can start a family who can ultimately support his revolution

by ELIZABETH GLANVILLE JULIUS Malema, who owes R16m in taxes and has recently been in court facing charges of corruption, gave a $6000 (about £3700) cash gift to Zimababwean friends who tied the knot in Harare last Saturday. The Sunday Independent reported that Malema was broke earlier this year.

Malema was a guest at the wedding of Mike Gava and Tendai Wenyika, who are both members of the ZANU-PF youth league.

“Speaking here as an unemployed fellow who got fired from work and is unable to commit more than what the minister (Saviour Kasukuwere) has committed, I have made consultations with friendly forces here in Zimbabwe who are doing well in their own right in business and they have asked me to commit US$6,000 to you Tendai and Mike,” Malema told the couple.

The ex-ANCYL leader told the couple to use his gift “to start a family”. He dubbed the happy couple “revolutionaries”, and said that “we must reproduce ourselves.

For our ideas to be sustainable, we have to reproduce ourselves. In the whole of Africa, we are not more than one billion and the world has got seven billion people.”

“What it means is that we have less than a billion people in Africa facing more than six billion.” He added, “We have to be half of that so that our ideas can dominate. I know that in some instances size does not matter, but when it comes to a revolution, size matters.”

Gava already has four wives, and purportedly 22 children. “You must never be ashamed of having many kids,” Malema told Gava. “You must be ashamed of having many wives, not many kids. Many wives are not an alternative. Actually they spread diseases because that is

multisexual relationship and they are not protected. Have many kids with one wife Mike.”

Throughout his speech Malema praised Mugabe; his support for the Zimbabwean leader and the ZANU-PF party became a contentious issues when he was expelled from the ANC. He also implored Mandela to support his plans for the nationalisation of South African mines and faster land reforms.

“President Mugabe ushered in political freedom, President Mandela ushered in political freedom and they are relying on the young ones to continue with the struggle. We are not going to disappoint them,” Malema told the wedding guests. “We are coming here to Zimbabwe not because we are running away from problems, but to come and gain strength because what you have achieved is an inspiration to Africa.

Melton Mowbray: Pies Melton Mowbray, Lincolnshire, is part of an area known for its great, and many, contributions to English food

by NICOLE HOLGATE MELTON Mowbray is a relatively small country town, but as anyone will tell you, it is notorious for one thing, and one thing alone: pies.

Ye Old Pork Pie Shoppe, the pork pie shop and attached bakery is, of course, the home of Melton Mowbray pies, which were invented as a lunch on the go for workers, but were popularised by the local nobility when they popped by for a bit of hunting.

Returning home after the season, the craving for pies remained and word spread of their fame.

The shop itself is warm, friendly and has a huge array of pies in it: all you would expect. Baker Steve gave us a small demonstration of the raising and shaping of the pie dough. The whole piemaking process can take around four days, including making the dough, shaping the pie, baking it, letting it cool and adding that most important ingredient, the pork fat, which is poured into the pie through holes in the lid after baking to ensure it retains its flavour and moisture. They are delicious: crisp, crunchy pastry and perfectly cooked, juicy pork shoulder, with no gaps in between.

Then on to the next claim to fame for Melton Mowbray: the cheese.

Melton Cheeseboard is one of several shops that sell local stilton, but as you can tell from the name, it is the most devoted to the trade.

The county of Leicestershire is one of only five which still produce stilton in an official capacity – anything else is just ‘blue cheese’ – and also as white stilton. Melton Cheeseboard gets its supply of both from a dairy just five miles outside of the town. They also sell Red Leicester, which true to its name is another local cheese, and has a flavour unique to the area, unlike those you find in supermarkets, which are often just dyed red. The shop stocks 130 varieties of cheese, as well as other local products.

Time for a bit more history.

The Melton Mowbray Carnegie museum is, like all good museums, a little bit creepy, full of a bizarre collection of local artefacts relating to its history of fox hunting, pie making, and not a lot else. A highlight was a giant hat in the shape of a large block of stilton.

There are also some weird facts about the area, such as that the expression ‘Painting the town red’ comes from the town, when in 1837 the Marquis of Waterford and friends, after a few too many ales, literally painted half of the old town.

Wymondham Windmill is another part of the food scene of Melton. It was built around 1814 and remains one of only four six-sailed windmills remaining in Leicestershire. In 1952 it ceased grinding corn but remains as a monument, with its own tea room and several shops nearby.

Staying at Scalford Hall Hotel was an interesting experience, as they often host weddings – if you are desperate for peace and quiet, you may want to find out how near your room is to the reception hall.

The hotel used to be the stately home of Colonel Colman, who gave his name to the eponymous mustard brand. Their restaurant provides a hearty selection of local food, including the obvious cheeseboard for desert. They’re also a venue for team-building and business conferences.

Stapleford Park House, at the other end of the ‘places to take tea’ chain, is a luxury hotel set in 500 acres of amazing grounds which include a church and graveyard.

Rest in Peace Thomas Madigage We honour the Bafana Bafana assistant coach who was killed last week his retirement from professional soccer.

As a member of the SuperSport coaching staff, Madigage helped the club win six titles including three consecutive league trophies between 2008 and 2010. After nearly a decade of service at the Pretoria-based club, the 41year old was appointed as an assistant to new Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund in July this year. As a testament to his hard work, SuperSport gave him their blessing, with his friend and mentor Gavin Hunt urging him to take up the national team role.

Off the field, Madigage shunned the spotlight, choosing to focus instead on his role as a mentor to youngsters. As a founding member of the South African Football Players’ Union, he dedicated his life to creating a network that would support emerging players while also protecting their interests. He is credited with shaping the careers of many

former SuperSport players, including Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo.

Madigage was an advocate for the creation of a proper development structure that would unearth talent and nurture young players in order to improve the standard of soccer in our country.

Staying true to his passion, in 2010 he launched The Thomas Madigage Foundation, which provides coaching clinics and supports gifted youngsters in their quest to become professional soccer players. The foundation’s work extends beyond soccer as it also offers bursaries and distributes school uniforms to underprivileged children in South Africa. At the time of his death, Madigage was working on building a sports academy in Limpopo as part of a partnership with Inter-Milan.

Despite his hugely successful career as both a player and a coach, Madigage remained a humble man. While many considered his four Bafana Bafana caps a travesty considering his immense talent, he instead expressed gratitude for having being given the opportunity to represent his country. As an assistant coach, he was content to remain in the background while working tirelessly to improve the lives of those less fortunate than himself. His remarkable transition from player to coaching staff was a sign of his dedication to the beautiful game.

Madigage would have celebrated his 42nd birthday on 14 November, the same day that Bafana Bafana host Zambia in a Nelson Mandela Challenge match.

Our deepest condolences to the Madigage family. May his soul rest in peace and his legacy live on forever.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013 cricket tickets to go on sale

by ROB FLUDE THE ICC Champions Trophy was launched in London last Wednesday, and will begin on Thursday 6 June 2013 when world champions India face South Africa at Cardiff’s SWALEC Stadium. The final will be played eighteen days later on Sunday 23 June 2013 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

This is the final Champions Trophy, as the ICC looks to implement its stated strategy of having only one global tournament per format. The world’s eight best ODI teams are split into two groups, with each team playing three matches. The top two in each group then progress to the semifinals, to be held in Cardiff and at The Kia Oval, the third venue in the competition.

Proteas captain AB de Villiers will want his charges to shed the “chokers” tag finally, with their other fixtures being against Pakistan on 10 June at Edgbaston and the West Indies on 14 June in Cardiff.

Director Steve Elworthy were both at the launch. Both are former Proteas’ players, with the latter having played in the 1998 Final against the West Indies in Bangladesh, which South Africa won by four wickets.

by SAMMY MNCWABE THOMAS Madigage was killed last Thursday in a car accident between Burgersfort and Polokwane, when his car crashed into two donkeys and then into an oncoming vehicle’s trailer.

The former player was on his way to see his family and also to finalise the start-up of a new academy. Fittingly, as the country comes to terms with his untimely death, we should all reflect on his positive influence to the sport in South Africa.

Madigage’s soccer career started at the tender of 16, when PSL side Jomo Cosmos signed him in 1987. A talented midfielder, he went on to enjoy a short stint at FC Zurich in Switzerland (in the process becoming Bafana Bafana’s first overseas player) before a knee injury forced him to return to Cosmos. He later joined SuperSport United and was appointed as the club’s assistant coach in 2002 following

Proteas aiming to cement Test top spot Proteas eager to maintain number one ranking in upcoming series in Australia after England success

by JEREMY BORTZ NO South African cricket fan, or just sporting fan to be fair, will ever forget what transpired the last time the Proteas toured Down Under. On the back of the world’s third-highest fourth innings run chase, knocking off 413 runs to win by six wickets in Perth, and that 180 run first innings ninth wicket partnership between JP Duminy and Dale Steyn that set up a nine wicket victory in at the MCG, the Proteas recorded their first ever test series win in Australia.

Not to mention of course captain Graeme Smith’s heroics in trying to save the third test at the SCG, when he walked out to bat with a broken hand and tennis elbow to try see out the final few deliveries of the match. Unfortunately, we were given a hiding when the Aussies toured us a few months afterwards, but we’ll definitely remember more what transpired Down Under!

South Africa’s well-established and highly experienced test side is brimming with confidence after a 2-0 win just recently against the English and the selectors have kept faith with that team. The only change to the squad sees uncapped seam bowler Rory Kleinveldt included in place of Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson noted said last week “It is tough luck for Lopsy (Lonwabo Tsotsobe) to miss out but we just feel that Rory’s ability to hit the deck hard will give us a valuable option, particularly in Brisbane and Perth. He also adds batting depth to the lower order.”

South Africa’s outstanding pace trio of Steyn, Morné Morkel and Vernon Philander will once again be expected to deliver the majority of wickets, with Jacques Kallis providing backup as the fourth seamer. The two specialist spinners included in the squad are likely to play different roles; Imran Tahir will likely continue to be used as an attacking option (especially in Adelaide, a surface given to sharp spin), while Robbie Peterson could well be employed to “plug” an end while the quicks are rotated at the other, much like Paul Harris in 2008/2009.

Smith has had great confidence in Tahir since his arrival to test cricket. South Africa has in the past been criticised for being defensive, but Smith has certainly done away with this mindset; his declaration at Headingley and his continued use of Tahir at Lord’s in the face of an onslaught from England’s Matt Prior, being two such recent examples.

Australian coach Mickey Arthur (who was the Proteas’ coach on their last tour of Australia) said he felt it was unlikely that the Proteas would go with two spinners. “That would really surprise me, it’s not really their style. They’re pretty much like us; their best attack is when their quicks play, so I guess they’ll use Imran Tahir as an attacking option, certainly in Adelaide. I can’t see them playing two though,” Arthur said.

Unlike the Proteas, the Aussies will be relying on depth, likely picking five quicks, plus allrounder Shane Watson in their squad. The experienced pair of Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus will likely play in all three tests with the remaining speed merchants James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins being rotated according to conditions.

On the batting front, South Africa’s top seven specialist batsmen pick themselves (Alviro Peterson, Smith, Hashim Amla, Kallis, AB de Villiers, Jacques Rudolph and JP Duminy) and all fans will be hoping that Amla continues his imperious run of form. Unless Rudolph and/or Duminy look horribly out of touch or pick up an injury, Faf du Plessis will likely continue to miss out on selection. There are, however, serious concerns about the fitness of batsmen and wicket-keeper de Villiers, as he struggles with a recurrence of persistent lower back and left ankle problems. Thami Tsolekile has been retained in the squad as the back-up ‘keeper and could well get a run with one of Rudolph, Peterson or Duminy dropping out.

Australia has yet to confirm their squad and questions remain over whether wicketkeeper Brad Haddin

will be recalled. Michael Clarke will once again captain the squad and Watson will play a major role, having just been informed he must return home before the conclusion of the Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa, to prepare for the test series.

The Proteas depart for Australia this weekend, and start the

tour off with a 3-day match against Australia A in Sydney on 2 November, followed by the first test on 9 November in Brisbane. The second and third tests will be played in Adelaide (22-26 November) and Perth (30 November to 4 December) respectively. Transmission times here in London are midnight for

the first two tests and 2.30am for the third. At least for the first two tests we’ll be able to watch just about the entire day’s play before heading off to work!

Any series against the Aussies promises to be hard fought and exciting, and I can’t wait for the action to begin. Bring on the Gabba!

SHARKS AIMING FOR SEVENTH HEAVEN Sharks outclass Bulls in semifinal; WP snatch late victory against Lions

by ROB FLUDE SN’T it odd how three months can make such a huge difference? It was back in late July that we sat here looking ahead to the Super Rugby semifinal at Newlands, with the table-topping Stormers set to play the timezonechallenged Sharks, and the home team overwhelming favourites to claim a home Final.

The Sharks had traversed the Indian Ocean twice within eight days, going from playing their last league game in Durban to turn up in Brisbane a week later for the playoff match against the Reds – which they won – and then back to Cape Town for an arduous semifinal against a team that had only lost twice during the league phase, incidentally once against the Sharks themselves.

Turn the clock forward almost three months – 87 days to be precise – and we have a situation where the Sharks head to this weekend’s Final in Durban as the clear favourites ahead of a Western Province team that literally snuck in after the hooter in their semifinal against the defending champions,

the Golden Lions in Johannesburg.

The Sharks haven’t lost at home in the Currie Cup this year and have only lost three of their 11 games so far (against Griquas, Bulls and Lions in the league phase). That is damning evidence that they are on course for their seventh Currie Cup title, and third in five seasons.

On the other hand, it hasn’t seemed likely that Province would make the Final this year; their form has been erratic, their injury list reads like an Accident & Emergency patient roll, and their tactics have been as erratic as their form. Some weeks it appears as if the Streeptruie of old are back, with the team playing complete rugby and scoring tries; other weeks it’s as if the boring Stormers are on the field, with defence the key to squeezing the opposition into mistakes in their own half, meaning a shot at goal and points accumulation through penalties, and a statutory try by Bryan Habana.

But perhaps that is the point; Province has made the Final, against all odds, much like the Sharks in Super Rugby this year.

Travel fatigue isn’t a factor though, and Province’s Springboks have certainly made a remarkably huge impact since returning, no more so than Duane Vermeulen and Eben Etzebeth. With skipper Jean de Villiers out injured, Province have looked to hooker-cum-flanker Deon Fourie to take the captain’s armband, and he has done a brilliant job, leading by example and even scoring the winning try on the weekend.

So, unlike the farcical CheetahsKings relegation match on the weekend – I highly doubt whether SARU will take responsibility for that circus act – the Final could be a great deal harder to pick. Currie Cup Finals in the last few years have been anything but tight, but something suggests we might be in for a dogfight on the weekend.

It’s the form and class of the Sharks against the unpredictable underdogs Western Province. I’m keeping my money in my pocket, that’s for sure.
