THE number of South Africans living in the UK has risen dramatically in the period between 2001- 2011, the 2011 census figures for England and Wales show. Government statistics also show that a total 3% (191,000) of the UK’s foreign born population are South African born, making South Africans the seventh most reported country of origin for non-UK born usual residents. This is a total increase of 60,000 South Africans in the last decade. The last census in 2001 reported that there were 131,000 South Africans in England and Wales. At least 36% of this number are living in London, with a population of roughly 68,760. The next major population centres for South Africans in England and Wales are in the

South East and North West of England respectively, however the concentration of South Africans is significantly lower in these areas. There has also been a drastic increase in the migrant population as a whole in London, the census marking a rise of 10% from 2737% of usual residents claiming foreign birth. This South African population figure is controversial as it is much lower than other recent estimates. However it does not represent the total number of South Africans in the UK as it excludes temporary residents and population figures from Scotland and Northern Ireland. It also does not take into account the number of South Africans born in other countries such as Zimbabwe. Watch this space for more information on this.

COOKING with Steele

ANGIE STEELE

Honey & mustard roast gammon

A CHRISTMAS feast is never quite complete until the gammon is on the table. I actually make this all year round; I love it so much, why should we only get to enjoy it once a year? If you wanted to go all out crazy, you could very easily add some orange marmalade to the brown sugar mixture along with a bit of orange zest. I have done it a few times and it adds a bit of tang to the dish. The trick is to keep an eye on it at the very end, when grilling, as it could burn very easily.

Ingredients:

• 1 unsmoked gammon, weighing roughly 1.5kg • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped into large chunks • 2 leeks, washed and cut into large chunks

• 1 onion, peeled and chopped into large chunks • 4 thyme stalks • 2 dried bay leaves • 10 black peppercorns • 12 cloves • 120g soft brown sugar • 2 tbsp honey • 2 tbsp wholegrain mustard

Method:

• Place the gammon in a large pot and cover with cold water, put over a high heat and bring to the boil • Once boiling, take off the heat and drain out all the water • Leaving the gammon in the pot, pour over fresh cold water making sure the gammon is completely submerged • Bring back to the boil, once

boiling turn down to a gently simmer and tip in the carrots, leeks, onion, thyme stalks, bay leaves and peppercorns • Leave to simmer gently for 1.5 hours, topping up with water when needed • Note, that for every 450g of gammon, one must cook it for 25 minutes • When finished, switch off the heat and leave to cool in the water; I often leave it overnight in my cool pantry • Remove the gammon from the water, discard the liquid (or keep it for Pea and Ham soup) • Preheat the oven to 200°C • Gently, and using a small knife if need be, remove the outer layer of rind, leaving as much fat on as

Kersfees in Engeland

My wens aan jou is ‘n Geseënde Kersfees! Vol geluk, blydskap en hoop in die ware betekenis van die Dag!

Legally Speaking: Tier 1 - Entrepreneur Q : I am currently visiting the UK, and am of the opinion that there are possibilities for the expansion of my business to the UK. Are there any options available for me in terms of visas that will allow me to settle here my family (wife and three children aged 17, 11, 6) while I get the business started on this side? : It sounds as though you are the ideal candidate to apply for the UK Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa. Alstom Trains acquires $5.8bn South African deal Contract provides boost for SA manufacturing by ZOHA TAPIA THE $5.8 billion contract to supply passenger trains to South Africa was won by French group Alstom against competition from Chinese, Spanish and Canadian companies. The Gibela Rail Transport Consortium of Alstom will partner with South African manufacturer of electro-mechanical equipment Actom for a 20-year contract to design, manufacture and supply commuter trains for the Passenger Rail Agency in South Africa (Prasa). In the first phase of the contract, Alstom will supply 3,600 vehicles from 2015 over a period of 10 years and will deliver technical maintenance support and spares supply for an 18 year period. The deal is expected to be finalised in June 2013. The second phase could increase the total order volume to 7,224 vehicles. According to Prasa the bid evaluation was based on a weighting of 85 percent for price and 15 percent for economic development. Also, more than 8,000 jobs will be created to develop skills, achieve black economic empowerment and revitalise South Africa’s railway manufacturing capability.

South Africa’s transport minister Dikobe Ben Martins said, “The process is much more than a train purchase, we are reviving our rail engineering sector, contributing to skills development and job creation among bigger objectives.” The contract states that a minimum of 65 percent of the manufacturing should be using local content and Alston has said they would be able to achieve 69 percent. However, the factory will only be operational in June 2016 and until then they will be using the Transnet Rail Engineering’s plant. Currently Prasa has 4,638 vehicles for its Metrorail operations in Gauteng, Durban, the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, but majority of them have been in use since 1950 and no new stock has been acquired since 1980. An estimated 5,256 vehicles are said to be needed to cope with the increasing passenger volumes on existing networks by 2020 and 1,512 vehicles on new lines, which will be built by 2035 according to their expansion plans. Other companies that bid for the contract were CSR-Wictra, Bombardier Inc, China CNR Corp, CSR EMU Supply, CAF and Dudula Rail. www.gatewaytoafrica.com

Some fraudsters have misrepresented true fuel volumes or reported the same cargo more than once – which is known as round-tripping. Swiss authorities have asked the Nigerian authorities for additional information. “This case involves suspected subsidy fraud on imports of refined products by Nigerian companies. They acquired the oil from companies based in Geneva,” a spokesperson for the Swiss authorities told Reuters.

Colleen Theron BULLET BIOGRAPHY Born: Pretoria Resides in: London with husband and two daughters Education: Qualified solicitor in England, Wales, Scotland and South Africa, and LLM in environmental law from the University of Aberdeen (with distinction) Career trajectory: • Advisor on environmental issues in complex property and corporate transactions, including public sector and MoD matters. • Recognized by The Legal 500 and Chambers as a leading environmental law practitioner • Previously associate at Norton Rose, head of the environment team at Lawrence Graham and partner at ASB law. Retains role as consultant to law firms • Lecturer at Birkbeck College, London, and executive member of the UK Environmental Law Association • Founder and director of CLT Envirolaw providing companies with specialist advice on sustainability issues • Member of IS0 210 London committee, developing ISO 20121, an international standard for sustainable events • Develops and implements sustainable events management systems under the framework of BS 8901 • Specialist legal guide on sustainability issues at LexisPSL Environment • Member of steering group of Finance Against Human Trafficking • Part of the newly formed steering group of British Association for Sustainable Sport

Why did you come to the United Kingdom? I had been working in Johannesburg as a conveyancer and I had always been interested in human rights law but for some reason I wanted to write laws. There were these brilliant people I went to university with and lots of them were going to do human rights law. I told myself I couldn’t really put myself in that calibre it’s strange how you think when you are 20. When I was doing conveyancing I wanted to do something more expansive and something I was more passionate about. I won a scholarship to Aberdeen and did a Masters in Environment

Law. I had a wonderful year and got an offer to work in the university for about six months. At that stage obviously I was on a South African visa, which you can only extend for a certain period, and I loved it. I always had the idea I would go back to do something in South Africa around environmental issues, which in my opinion encompasses human rights issues, and it is really interesting to see how that whole debate on human rights and environment crossover is beginning to unfold. I decided to work in Scotland for a few years, get some experience in environmental law and go back to SA. I got an offer from a Glaswegian firm, where I met my first husband who was Scottish. And that’s how things unfolded and I ended up staying here. Do you come from a family of lawyers? My great great grandfather was a judge in South Africa. But we are a family of doctors and engineers. My grandmother Dr Emily Krause was one of the first woman doctors who came to London. My grandfather was a gynaecologist and they ran a nursing home. She was part of the Red Cross movement established in South Africa and did a lot of international travelling with the Red Cross. My father was a civil engineer. My younger brother and my elder half brother are engineers and my other half brother is a doctor. What was it like coming to the UK for the first time? In 1995, when I was in Aberdeen I was sent to the police station to register because I was a South African. It

took hours. I didn’t know the city to find the police station. We had just rejoined the Commonwealth. I went to the police station and said I wasn’t going to register because I didn’t have too; we are part of the Commonwealth. They were really snappy and they said if I didn’t I would have to leave. I demanded they speak to their head office in London, because I knew this wasn’t a requirement for me or any other South African on campus. They kept me there for the whole day. I got a fax from the head office apologising and saying that they had gone wrong and I didn’t have to sign it and would I like a cup of tea. Besides that people mix up your accents. They think you are Australian. Do you miss South Africa? My mum and my brothers are still there. I miss the sunshine, the ease of life, the outdoor buzz. And I like the mix of people. I find it an intriguing place. What is different about South Africans? They are can-doers. If they want to do something they will. They are warm people. They wear their

hearts on their sleeves more than others. You get into discussions with South Africans in quite a different way – they will talk about their life, how they grew up, their beliefs, you won’t really find that so easily in a boardroom in England, it takes a lot of time for someone to get to that point. It’s an interesting thing about the place you were born: you always view it, even if you are still in love with the people, with a slight detachment. I would support England if South Africa was playing in say a rugby or cricket match.

Do you intend going back to SA? What I really have a dream to do is to work across the continent; to take what I learnt here and apply it somewhere in South Africa as a sort of a give-back to society. And I would like to do some voluntary work in South Africa as part of a bigger dream. So I wouldn’t say we would go back again. It’s taken me a while to get established here and I love the buzz and the mix of London. To move away from it would be really difficult. When I dream it would be wonderful to spend chunks of time here and chunks of time there.

South African wedding decor trends for 2013

Planning a wedding in South Africa in 2013? The coming year has a few interesting trends and innovative ideas using traditional concepts with a few twists. Modern weddings are allowing couples to have fun with the process, bend the rules feather chandeliers. Feathers and show a more personal side of themselves by TARRYN GLASS WEDDING décor is no longer a simple organza runner over a white tablecloth with a flower arrangement in the centre. It has become the main creative feature of a wedding whereby a couple can truly express who they are. As such, do it yourself weddings feature heavily, where couples make and collect their own décor, accessories and even clothes. The coming year has a few interesting trends using traditional concepts with a few twists. Get personal Personalisation is a key trend for 2013. Attention to detail with personalised elements reflects the uniqueness of the bride’s and groom’s relationship. This includes love stories and intimate personal details shared with guests whether on a storyboard, photo wall or other décor pieces. Table numbers and place setting décor with ‘personal’ relevance to the bride and groom are popular as well as the use of belongings, heirlooms and cherished items.

work well to add interesting contrasts and texture; used with floral arrangements they create a Bohemian chic and naturally inspired décor.

Whimsical vintage Vintage décor is still a popular trend that will continue into 2013. With the early 2013 release of The Great Gatsby movie expect much whimsical 1920s vintage romance. Emphasis is on luxurious trimmings and detail in a combination of natural hues – ivory and pale peach or pink are prominent with pearls, feathers, faux fur, crystal and lace. Mixing vintage items with modern colours or settings is also popular. Mix and match Contrasting combinations especially in terms of materials, prints and colours is a major trend for next year. Table linen is layered, such as plain with print with lace with sheer. Deconstructed centrepieces are also popular with a collection of items making up a centrepiece i.e. vases, glasses, stands and books. Tables no longer need to match; each can be given a unique type of décor. This trend shows a general move towards freedom and nonconformity with wedding decor.

Colour me pretty Pale pink and pastel mint will be two of the most prominent colours for 2013. Black and white will be making a comeback and works well with the current trend of stark contrasts, opposing colours, materials and themes. Décor themes can easily be combined, such as vintage décor with a modern twist of black and white. Modern weddings allow couples to have fun with the process, bend the rules and show a more personal side of themselves by not conforming to the rather mundane weddings of yesteryear. Have fun and go and be creative.

Birds of a feather Feathers will prove a versatile décor element as they can be added to most theme designs. Birds and bird cages have played a big role in décor for the last

violence before the referendum, said that differences should not necessarily lead to fighting. He went on to say that the nature of the threat has changed: “It is more intimidation rather than violence [and that] people are being visited and given warnings, and there have been arbitrary arrests and detention.” On his three-day visit to Zimbabwe, Niebel echoed the expectations of the majority of the international community stating that the German government expects Zimbabwe to “guarantee human rights and freedom of the press and return to the rule of law.”

by LINDSAY JARDINE ACCORDING to zimdiaspora. com, Zanu-PF party members at provincial level are being coerced to endorse President Robert Mugabe, who will be 89 years old when he stands for election in 2013, without question. This report comes on the back of a visit to Harare last week by German Development Minister, Dirk Niebel, who called on Zimbabwe to hold a fair and credible constitutional referendum and legitimate general elections that are without violence. He went on to say that “the kind of violence that happened in 2008 must not happen again.” Human rights groups reportedly fear a recurrence of the violence that happened at the last general elections around the disputed vote, when President Mugabe’s ZanuPF party lost its parliamentary majority. The UK’s Department for International Development (DflD) describes Zimbabwe’s political situation as “highly volatile”. The Dfld is currently providing £80m – £90m in aid to Zimbabwe and says it is prepared to increase aid if a government is elected that “reflects the will of the people”. The referendum for a new constitution is due to take place in January 2013 and the elections to end the powersharing deal between Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai in June. Leo Wamwanduka, a peace

continues from back page... a silver medal to his tally in the pool. Kayaker Bridgitte Hartley picked up a bronze medal, while 800m athlete Caster Semenya took silver in her event. Oscar Pistorius became the first double amputee to compete in the able-bodied Olympics, attracting worldwide admiration. September Pistorius and his 4x100m relay teammates claimed gold in the Paralympics in world record time. Team South Africa finished on 29 medals, including eight golds. Natalie du Toit bowed out of competitive swimming, ending with 12 gold medals over a glittering career. The Springboks proved doubters wrong with a five-try 31-8 hammering of Australia at Loftus Versfeld, with Bryan Habana scoring a hat-trick.

The Proteas lost all three Super Eight matches in the World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka and went home early. Boxer Corrie Sanders was tragically killed after being shot in an armed robbery.

October The Springboks finished the Rugby Championship getting smashed 32-16 by New Zealand in Soweto. Golfer Branden Grace claimed the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links championship. Western Province ended their 11-year Currie Cup drought, beating the Sharks in the final in Durban. South Africa won the annual Hong Kong Sixes cricket tournament, while former Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola was sacked after he was found guilty of financial wrongdoing. Captain and midfielder Steven Pienaar retired from Bafana Bafana duty to

focus on his English club Everton. Bafana assistant coach Thomas Madigage tragically died in a car accident. November The Springboks had an unbeaten run on their end-of-year tour, beating Ireland, Scotland and England, and in doing so, finished number two on the IRB rankings. Cyclist David George – a former teammate of Lance Armstrong –

was banned after testing positive for a banned substance. The Proteas netball association signed a landmark deal with SuperSport to broadcast the domestic tournament.

December The Proteas secured a 1-0 victory in the Test series in Australia to remain at number one. Faf du Plessis scored a brilliant and defiant 110 not-out on debut to

fight for a draw in the second Test, swinging the momentum South Africa’s way. So there we have it. What a terrific sporting year it has been for SA. As we look forward to 2013, all of us at The South African would like to wish you and your families a blessed festive season and if you are travelling back home, to have a safe trip and to enjoy the sunshine! See you all next year!

after a freak eye injury in a warmup game for the England tour. Batsman Hashim Amla scored South Africa’s first triple ton (311 not out) as the Proteas trounced England at the Oval in the first Test. The Olympics got underway and swimmers Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos collected a gold medal each. Chad’s victory was especially dramatic as he pipped Olympic legend Michael Phelps in the latter’s favoured event. We’re still not sure if Chad or his dad Bert – a cult hero now in the UK – enjoyed the win more! Ernie Els came from nowhere in the field to capture the British Open golf tournament.

We look back at the highs and lows of our heroes on and off the fields of play and salute those whose success inspired a nation. January Heyneke Meyer’s appointment as Springbok rugby coach was met with widespread approval as he replaced Peter de Villiers in the most high-pressure job in the country. In cricket, Proteas’ all-rounder Jacques Kallis scored a sublime 224 at Newlands to guide South Africa to a 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka, their first home series win since 2008. February Cobras batsman Richard Levi spanked the fastest international T20 century, when he scored 117 not out off 51 balls against New Zealand in Hamilton. The Proteas won the T20 series 2-1, and took out the one-day series 3-0.
