I’M STILL FIERCELY SOUTH AFRICAN!
Happy 2013! Maybe one of your new year resolutions is to reconnect with home, right here in your patch of Britain? We’re here to help!

appy New Year to all our readers! May 2013 bring you love, health, happiness, adventure and prosperity! Maybe you’re feeling out of touch with your South African roots and one of your new year resolutions is to reconnect with home? Well, we’re here to help with some fun suggestions on how to feel more proudly South African, right here in your patch of Britain: Learn a South African language Regret never learning Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho or Afrikaans at school? You’re never too old to start. There are a number of online courses or even better, you could use our Facebook group (facebook.com/ thesouthafrican) to connect with native speakers in the UK to give you some personal tuition. If nothing else, why not learn some basic phrases in Xhosa or Zulu that you can use next time you fly back home. Nothing brightens someone’s day better than being greeted in their language (even if the pronunciation is slightly off).
Start the new year by acquainting yourself with some of South Africa’s rising new stars, such as singer Lira, who will perform at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ball this month. See page 2 for full story.

Learn the words to the national anthem Feel that stirring inside whenever they play the opening bars of ‘Nkosi Sikelel’iAfrica’ before the
Springbok rugby games but find yourself sheepishly mumbling half the words when the song kicks in? It’s time to act! Start by looking up the lyrics (and meaning) and then follow the phonetic guide to pronunciation in the video on our website (www. thesouthafrican.com/news). Soon you’ll be belting it out better than Ard Matthews and Ras Dumisani in duet. Get into the kitchen Craving your ouma’s koeksisters? Why not dig out her old recipe book or buy one such as Evita Bezuidenhout’s Kossie Sikelela or Ukutya Kwasekhaya: Tastes from Mandela’s Kitchen. Nothing says home like some lekker soulfood. Think vetkoek, pap en sous, chakalaka, samp and beans, bobotie, malva pudding, pumpkin fritters… Join a South African club or networking group Join one of the many Facebook groups for South Africans in different parts of the UK, to find out about the numerous SA meet-ups and events throughout the year. If you’re in London and want to do some business networking, why not become a member of the Breakfast Indaba or South African Chamber of Commerce UK. ...continues on next page

SOUTH Africa’s Lerato Molapo, best known to her fans as Lira, is to perform at an inauguration ball for American president Barack Obama in January. Her announcement last month came three weeks after she got the invite. She said she was “very excited” and that she hoped “the president will be present [so that she] get[s] to meet him.” The inauguration will take place in Washington on Monday 21 January 2013 with Lira performing two sets for a few hundred people at an African-
themed ball, one of ten official balls set to accompany the inauguration. As December has been a busy month for the singer so far, she said she had not yet had the opportunity to decide which songs to sing. Lira has been pursuing the US market for the past three years and her landing this gig has been described by her husband and manager Robin Kohl as “massive”. “We are ecstatic about this. We have really worked hard at breaking into the US market and now it seems to be paying off at last,” he said.

South African expat scoops MasterChef Ireland 2012
35-year-old IT professional Tamarin Blackmur had to compete against 50 other contenders over a gruelling 10 weeks of MasterChef Ireland episodes to win the approval of the judges by SIMON WALSH A FORMER Knysna resident has won the prestigious MasterChef Ireland 2012 award, it was announced by the Irish state broadcaster Radio Telefís Éireann (RTE) last month. 35-year-old IT professional Tamarin Blackmur had to compete against 50 other contenders over a gruelling 10 weeks of MasterChef Ireland episodes to win the approval of the judges, top restaurateurs Nick Munier and Dylan McGrath. Tamarin narrowed down her rivals to 16, before coming up against her final two opponents for the definitive contest that aired on RTE 2 last week. She said, “I’ve always loved cooking, I’ve always loved food. I actually can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in food. When I was growing up, while my friends would buy storybooks, I would buy cookbooks. Asked what prompted her to vie for the MasterChef Ireland challenge she replied, “I’d been watching the show for years – MasterChef Australia, MasterChef New Zealand and MasterChef UK
The OPTIMIST KAREN DE VILLIERS
Will 13 be my lucky number?
I RECKON I am going to be dragged kicking and moaning into this New Year. I have an inexplicable allergy to change; like my little habits and having loved ones close. And the number 13 is so uncomfortable, so superstitious;
- and it looked like great fun. “I watched MasterChef Ireland for the first time last year and I thought if it comes up again this year I’m actually going to do it. I was sitting at my PC with the application form and within 10 minutes had completed and e-mailed it. I didn’t want to think about it. I thought, just fill it in say what’s on your mind and send it; but I do remember taking a deep breath as I clicked ‘send’! I was amazed when I got the call. It just went from there.” “The audition dish was definitely a highlight for me. It was a prawn and beetroot curry with one of the judges, Dylan, saying it was one of the best dishes he had ever tasted. The low point for me was the soufflé. It rose, but then it flopped! “But, I thought, Look, I’ve learned from it, so I can make a soufflé now. I just took everything on board and things got better from there.” We asked Tamarin if there were any South African influences in the dishes she created on the show, and the answer lay in a childhood favourite of hers, a cup of rooibos. “It has quite a distinct flavour, so I used it in one of the challenges,
making an ice cream. When you tasted that ice cream you could taste the rooibos coming through,” she revealed. Because MasterChef Ireland was pre-recorded last summer, keeping her progress and eventual win under wraps presented its own challenges for Tamarin. “My boss knew about it and let me have the time off, but because no one could say anything [about MasterChef] a lot of my work colleagues thought I was having a breakdown or something. There was a lot of speculation! “The girls at work who I socialise with couldn’t believe I’d kept the secret for so long. They were in shock!” As the final drew near, Tamarin got a further incentive when her mum Diane announced she was flying over from New Zealand. “At first I didn’t believe her. The she said to me ‘I’ve booked my ticket’, and I was just over the moon. “I didn’t want to disappoint her, but she always said to me, ‘No matter what, don’t worry about it, you’ve got this far, and if you don’t win, it doesn’t matter; you’re a winner in my eyes’.”
it doesn’t really slip off the tongue like a sexy sound. This happens every closing of year past. My memories of loss hang like a damp towel over my head, and I find it difficult to breathe. Ghosts past swirl around my head. I feel traitorous leaving the year. On the other hand, the idea of beginning again is like new stationery, like a new diary, all white and blank, just waiting for holiday pencil points. I plan the most ridiculous excursions, mostly in my head; never to see fruition but they are there, off to Rome, Paris, Milan. A little bit of skiing and tulips in the spring. All the plays I am going to watch, the exhibitions. Going to study French with a master and paint like Cezanne in
Provence. A clean slate. I am a bit like Vladimir or Estragon from Waiting for Godot. I plan and seldom execute. Habit is the culprit. The passing of one year to another is the tipping point – the time when I sit and run ALL these issues through my head, it seems this cusp of time is self-imposed reflection time, hence my reluctance to be in the vicinity at all. I don’t want to have to remember, or worry about being
35-year-old Tamarin Blackmur recently won the title of MasterChef Ireland.
Tamarin was getting down to preparing a celebratory buffet for 20 of her friends when we called at her home in Whitehall, North Dublin. Intriguingly, the high-end nibbles were to include “truffle popcorn”. Meanwhile, an encore of her award-winning “sit down” creations from the MasterChef Ireland saga is being eagerly anticipated.
We asked her if a career move from computer bites to, well, bites might be on the cards. “I really want to get back into the kitchen, whether part or full time, I’m kind of putting my feelers out there. “I want to do what I love, and if that means taking a break from my current career to do that, I will definitely go down that route,” she said.
another year older, more wrinkly, less of an impact. Part of me also wants to go and knit a blanket in a corner, to avoid having to worry that I worry so over New Year. Not for me all the karaoke (never was) as the Silver Ball falls in Times Square; could I be the Gremlin of New Year’s? And then something really awful happens in the world. Children are murdered in their primary school. Teachers teaching carols are gunned down in front of innocents that will never be innocent again. Violence strips innocents of their lives, their humanity. There is no 2013 for them, for all those who have really lost. We mourn them. We mourn the fact that stupid, crazy
lunatics are out there. Wish I could gather all the bad people, dump them on an island and send in ‘The Expendables.’ Get Arnie, Sylvester, Dolf, Bruce and all the others to round them up and send them into orbit for New Year. Which is why, writing this, I confess I wish I could jump over the whole transition. I also realise that I am still able to. While others have fallen in the trenches of life, I, albeit clumsily, can still fight the fight, run the race, jump the heights and swim the valleys below. Why should a year with a funny number get me down? I can champion the cause on behalf of others. And I will go to Tuscany…

Gas reserves to boost Mozambique’s economy
Mozambique to cash in on recently discovered gas fields
by ZOHA TAPIA THE MOZAMBICAN government plans on boosting its revenue by $6-$8bn per year by taking advantage of the country’s newly discovered gas reserves to develop domestic industries and export liquefied natural gas (LNG). Italian energy giant ENI discovered around 150 trillion cubic feet of gas off Mozambique’s eastern coast, which is enough to supply Germany, Britain, France and Italy for 15 years. ENI and American company Anadarko Petroleum are already in talks for pushing development of the LNG plants in order to pay off investments in gas production. In fact ENI executives met Mozambique’s president Armando Guebuza with plans of building a town near the gas reserve.
However, attention will first be paid to exports and production deals are expected to be signed next year, following development in the surrounding areas. Minerals Minister Esperanca Bias told Reuters, “We want more than just LNG. We have huge reserves and we want to see how we can use the gas in the local, regional and international markets.” This outstanding volume of natural gas will help facilitate considerable development in the country’s gas industry and will lead to large-scale exports locally and internationally. The new gas reserves could also stop the increasing inflation rates, which have been due to rising fuel prices. The gas reserves will uplift the economy of a nation where more
than half of the population live below the national poverty line and 60 percent are unemployed. Already an importer of fuel, Mozambique will use gas to manufacture liquid fuels and produce cheap electricity that will help supply four-fifths of its 23 million people who have no access to power. Companies from South Africa, Germany, Japan, India and South Korea have expressed interest in setting up gas-to-liquids, methanol plants and processing gas for power generation and production of steel and aluminium.

Diamonds… not forever?
by CALI MACKRILL IN 1967, a year after Botswana’s independence and the discovery of vast natural diamond resources, President Seretse Khama struck a deal with DeBeers to create Debswana, the country’s main mining company. Since then Botswana has gone from being one of the ten poorest countries in the world to becoming a stable middle-income ‘African miracle’, providing 22% of the world’s rough diamonds. But what happens when the bubble bursts? Diamond reserves, which account for 70-80% of Botswana’s export earnings, are expected to run out by 2030, leaving a huge hole in Botswana’s economy. This single-commodity dependence makes Botswana vulnerable to market fluctuations, as was proven in 2009 when GDP growth plunged from 2.9% in 2008 to -4.8%.
This served as a wake-up call to President Khama who has stressed the need for diversification in order to decrease the dependence on diamonds. With the Okavango delta and various nature reserves attracting foreign visitors, it seems that tourism would be a logical diversification strategy and would provide lots of relatively low-skilled jobs to alleviate the country’s high unemployment rates. However, this introduces the issue of sustainability at a time when people are travelling for leisure less frequently and opting for lower-cost holidays. In his State of the Nation address in November, Khama stressed that “dependency on anything is never healthy” but he will have to move fast to build a healthier economy which can follow the sparkling legacy of Botswana diamonds.

Are there any possibilities for me to continue my stay in the UK, based on our relationship? Although we intend to stay together, neither one of us are prepared to get married for the sake of a visa at this stage in our lives. : It sounds as though you might qualify for the unmarried partner visa. This immigration category enables unmarried partners of persons present and settled in the UK who has lived together in a heterosexual or same-sex relationship for at least two years, to apply to join their partner in the UK. In order to qualify, you will need to prove that you have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for two years or more. You will also need to prove that you intend to live together permanently in the future. A minimum income threshold of £18,600 is required in order to sponsor the settlement of the partner. If you are successful in your application the visa will be granted for a period of 30 months, after which an application can be made for an extension of another 30 months, which should take you to the qualifying period of 60 months for indefinite leave to remain in the UK. You will also be able to work without restrictions while on this visa. Please contact our offices for further assistance and information. When and why did you come to the UK? It was just over three years ago. There is a whole bunch of reasons. One was I remember being taken aside by a professor and he was of the belief that you should always live in a different place at least once in your life. It gives you a perspective on how different societies work under different political systems. I always had this at the back of my mind. And then I also have an older brother here and I wanted to spend some time with him. Was it difficult for you to adjust? It was very difficult to integrate and I still feel I am in the process of integrating. In South Africa absolutely everybody talks about politics, it is their national sport. And what I found very difficult after coming to UK is that I was trying to do that with British people and it would seem a little
bit strange, not something people would talk about. So I found it difficult to find people I could discuss one of my major interests in life with. I’m very lucky to have friends like Andrew Feinstein and Martin Plaut with whom I can do so. I felt people here were politically disengaged, it’s not something I expected. What do you miss about South Africa? I miss South Africa all the time. I miss my family, my father and my older brother still live there and I miss all my friends I’ve had since childhood. I miss the sort of openness and friendliness in South Africa. Being able to go out somewhere, you could pretty much talk to everybody and nobody thinks you are that strange to do that. But here you can’t do that, they will think you are a lunatic; you just don’t talk to people. I miss the vibrancy; there is a different sort of energy in South Africa because it’s a country that is still being constructed. Whereas in UK it feels like there is a slightly more silent, traditional way of doing things. If I lived in UK there is absolutely no way I would have ended up with my first book when I was 24 years old, whereas in South Africa, that is not unheard of because people are given a chance. Do you intend going back? It is relatively unclear at this point. I am very happy in London at the moment. I feel settled and it’s an invigorating place to be in. The major
issue I have at the back of my mind is that I do most of my work as an anti-corruption campaigner and an investigative journalist and it looks extremely likely that there is going to be some version of the secrecy law going through in South Africa, which sounds very chilling from the point of investigative journalism and it does make me worry that if I return to SA and a secrecy law is in place, it threatens the investigative journalistic process. I would be worried for my safety. How did you become an investigative journalist? It was completely by accident. I actually trained as a historian and my first proper job was working for my professor. He wrote the biography of Thabo Mbeki and asked me to do some research into the arms deal. I was just completely amazed by it; by the depth of the scandal and by the real political impact it has had in the country. I have a huge amount of affection for it. So that led me down the path of looking at the arms deal and becoming an investigative researcher. I actually found that very enjoyable, even though I am always worried about my safety and it can be quite a chilling process. I really struggled in South Africa with what would make me a good citizen. What would make me somebody who would actively contribute to making sure that we would never return to the evils of the past? I thought I could be a good citizen by helping to ensure that there was an effective allocation of resources and that the democratic process functioned as it should. Was it dangerous covering the arms deal? I never had any direct threat during the research process. I was always aware of the fact that I was treading on very sensitive territory. And I always worked on the assumption, I don’t know whether I was paranoid or not, that my research was being actively monitored by people I was implicating in my research, by intelligence agencies in South Africa. So, I would take precautions to ensure that my data was secure. The people around me were very worried about my safety. One of my reasons for moving to the UK was that we felt it was slightly safer for

me to do that work here. I do know people who had experienced intimidation and someone I find very interesting in this regard is Andrew Feinstein. When he was investigating the arms deal in Parliament he faced great intimidation. And he felt it was safe to live in the UK and I agreed with him. That is one of the reasons we are still here. What are your future plans? After my last book I decided to take a break from writing because I have written four books in five years and that is a bit exhausting. So I’m not currently doing any
research towards a book but am working closely with Andrew Feinstein and one of the major things we are working on at the moment is preparing for the Arms Deal Commission of Inquiry in South Africa. We were recently subpoenaed to appear as witnesses for the Commission, which will happen in March. We are converting The Shadow World, a book on the global arms trade, into a documentary. In terms of my own book project I am thinking of writing a non-political one next, take a bit of a breather before getting back into politics.

Your guide to the hottest SA sporting events this year ...continues from back page June, which features the top eight ODI teams. This is the last time the tournament will be played and the Proteas will be hoping to win their first piece of ODI silverware since winning this competition in 1998. They play India on 6 June, followed by games against Pakistan (10th) and the West Indies (14th). The semifinals are scheduled for 19 and 20 June,
with the final at Edgbaston in Birmingham on 23. The Boks will be looking to build on the momentum from their unbeaten 2012 end-of-year tour when they host Italy as well as their Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool B opponents Scotland and Samoa in a unique four-nation mini-tournament for the June Test window, when Super Rugby takes a breather. Possibly the most iconic event
on the sporting calendar, the Comrades ultra marathon, takes place on 2 June. The US Open golf championship commences on 13 June at Merion in Pennsylvania, while in tennis, the All England Lawn Tennis Association Championships (better known as Wimbledon!), starts on 24 June. In late June, the Sevens World Cup takes place in Moscow, with

Swimming hero Chad le Clos will be hoping to build on his Olympic success when swimming’s second most prestigious meet, the World Championships, takes place in Barcelona from 19 July to 4 August. Robbie Hunter, who in 2001 became the first South African to complete the Tour de France and in 2007 the first South African to win a stage, will ride for team GarminBarracuda in the 100th Tour de France, which starts on 29 June and rides into Paris on 21 July. Our athletics stars will compete in the IAAF World Championships in Russia from 10 to 18 August, while the US Open tennis tournament starts on 26 August. September The Rugby Championship continues with the Boks playing the Wallabies in Brisbane (7 September), All Blacks in Auckland (14) and the Wallabies again at Newlands (28). October The Boks play their final match against the All Blacks in Johannesburg on 5 October. The Proteas are due to travel to Pakistan for three Tests, five ODIs and three T20s, however security issues might force the tour to be held again in the UAE, as it was in late 2010. November/December India’s cricketers head to South African shores in November for three Tests, seven ODIs and two T20s, while the Boks will travel north for their annual end-ofseason European tour (fixtures are yet to be finalised). The IRB World Sevens rugby series continues with the Wellington and Las Vegas tournaments in the first two weeks of February. BlitzBokke coach Paul Treu’s team has had a moderate start to the season and are currently fourth after three tournaments, only five points behind second-placed France.
by ROB FLUDE & JEREMY BORTZ fter an action-packed and Olympic-led year of sport in 2012, this year offers heaps of action across various sporting codes.
January One of the biggest events of the year will be when South Africa hosts the 29th African Cup of Nations (the tournament was scheduled to be played in Libya, but violence there meant CAF moved the competition south). Bafana Bafana make a return to the football showpiece after a four-year absence. The team has largely failed to impress since their debut victory back in 1996, when they were led by Neil Tovey and inspired by Nelson Mandela, and fans across the country will be hoping that playing in our backyard will inspire them to glory again. They play Cape Verde at Soccer City in the opening game on 19 January, Angola in Durban on 23, and Morocco in Durban on 27. Should Bafana win their group, they avoid playing Ghana, the likely winners of Pool B, in the quarter final. The semi-finals are scheduled for 6 February and the final on 10 February. On the cricketing front, the Proteas will be squaring off in a home two-Test series against New Zealand, followed by three T20s. The Proteas should be too strong in the Tests, but the T20s and ODIs will no doubt be closer contests as the Proteas look to build a young
March Two iconic annual South African events are the Argus Cycle Tour (10 March) and the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (30 March). The next two IRB Sevens tournaments take place in Hong Kong and Tokyo. April The first golf major of the year, the US Masters, tees off at Augusta on 11 April, where competitors compete for the coveted green jacket. Recent South African winners are Charl Schwartzel (2011) and Trevor Immelman (2008). The Proteas kick off the year with two tests against New Zealand, while Bafana Bafana host the African Cup of Nations, the Springboks look to build on the momentum from their unbeaten 2012 end-of-year tour and Ernie Els is hoping to hold his winning form in 2013.

Dav Whatmore, arrives in South Africa in February to play three Tests, two T20s and five ODIs over a seven-week period. Super Rugby action kicks off on 15 February (South Africa’s teams start only from 22 February) and it will be interesting to see
how the Southern Kings perform after the debacle that marred their promotion to the tournament at the expense of the Lions. The Stormers and Sharks will be looking to go the distance this year after both falling at the final or semifinal hurdles in recent years.
May The Sevens rugby season concludes with tournaments in Glasgow and Twickenham. The second tennis grand slam event, the French Open at Rolland Garros, starts on 26 May. June After a well-deserved break, the Proteas will head to England for the ICC Champions Trophy in ...continues on previous page
