BLADE RUNNER: HERO OR VILLAIN? The murder that shook the world - was it really an accident? Ten new points on a fast-evolving case
by HEATHER WALKER
AS Oscar Pistorius appears in court today for his bail hearing after being charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the world remains gripped by this tragic turn of events that saw a hero become a villain overnight. The murder has been a huge talking point throughout the weekend, both back home and abroad, with South Africans fiercely divided on whether they believe he is innocent or guilty. Pistorius, who is possibly the most famous South African in the world apart from Nelson Mandela and Charlize Theron, was an international darling after becoming the first double amputee to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. Now he is being painted in some reports as an aggressive gunobsessed womaniser who attacked his FHM model sweetheart, allegedly with a cricket bat, before shooting her four times. Everyone has an opinion on what could have transpired on that fateful Valentine’s Day in Pretoria and several ‘sources’ have been quick to share grisly snippets with British tabloids. But until the truth of Pistorius’s guilt or innocence comes out in a court of law, which could be several months yet, speculation will continue to mount.

Running hero and crossover Paralympian oscar Pistorius shocked the world when it emerged that he had shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp
10 key points: ● The runner’s family maintains that Pistorius did not shoot Steenkamp deliberately: “We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation and that the state’s own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or indeed any murder at all.” ● A bloodied cricket bat is reportedly a key piece of evidence from the scene of the crime. Was this
used to kill Steenkamp or did she use it to defend herself? It has been said that Steenkamp’s skull had been “crushed” ● Pistorius may have shot Steenkamp in a fit of so-called ‘steroid rage’ - officers supposedly found performance enhancing drugs at the athlete’s home ● Former UK Sun editor Stuart Higgins has flown to SA to help with Pistorius’s PR. This echoes murder accused Shrien Dewani
hiring British publicist Max Clifford ● Some of Pistorius’s sponsors may pull their support, and his agent has cancelled his races for the foreseeable future, including Australian meets in March and Manchester in May, where he would have raced against his Olympic rival Jonnie Peacock. ● One of the latest rumours to surface over the weekend was that the couple were fighting over a text continued on page 2
Putting celebrity aside, “Man slays woman partner” happens all too frequently for it to merit more than a few column inches.

SOUTH African born Tony Granger, who has a successful career which spans 25 years in the financial sector, was recently admitted as a freeman of London. This is the highest honour the City of London can bestow on an individual. Granger said, “I feel honoured to have been invited by the Guild of International Bankers, where I am a Freeman (Worshipful Company of International Bankers), to be admitted as a Freeman of the City of London. Individuals chosen make a declaration to her Majesty the Queen swearing a solemn oath to Her Majesty promising to keep the Queen’s Peace in London. Famous honorary members include Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill. The granting of the Freedom of the City of London is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today, first presented in 1237. The benefits of this accolade include the right to be drunk and disorderly without fear of arrest, to be married in St Paul’s Cathedral and buried in the City. Granger was born in Worcester, Western Cape in 1951. He received his BA in Economics and Law and an LLB from Rhodes University and also holds a B.Com from Unisa. He worked as an advocate at the Supreme Court of South Africa and at investment group Old Mutual before moving to the UK in 1987. The 62-year-old is currently the President of the Insurance Institute of Shropshire and Mid Wales. He is also a former president of the Financial Planning Institute of South Africa and Managing Director of ITAS
Planning Limited, which designs new insurance products and provides other client services. “I am also a firm believer in making it possible for the consumer to understand complicated products and services in layman’s terms. I have written over 14 business books in financial planning issues, ranging from pensions, inheritance tax and trusts, school and university fees funding, retirement planning, business protection, succession planning, tax- efficient investments and others,” he said. Granger explained that as a business owner he doesn’t have the same security as working for a big company. “Things can go wrong, and they do...you carry ‘the can’ for whatever goes wrong. The lessons learned have helped me in the advice process for those less fortunate…and saving their businesses,” he added. He has revealed that he will be doing less work with personal client services in the future but this in no way means he is slowing down, having played rugby in the World Golden Oldies Festival in Japan in November 2012 for the Australian team.

“I’m no messiah”: Ramphele’s new party goes to ‘war on corruption’ Four women killed by their partners every day in SA
Celebrity aside, ‘Man slays woman partner’ happens all too frequently for it to merit more than a few column inches by CAROL FREEMAN
PROVIDENCE has determined that the eyes of the world should be on South Africa, in the wake of the tragic death of Reeva Steenkamp, allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, at the same time as the 1 Billion Rising campaign draws attention to the high level of gender based violence internationally. Putting the celebrity aside, this kind of story would never normally attract this degree of media attention – “Man slays woman partner” happens all too frequently for it to merit more than a few column inches. Violence against women is epidemic in South Africa. It has been estimated that a woman is killed by her male partner every six hours, the highest rate of death by domestic violence in the world. We have sleepwalked into a collective normalisation of violence against women. When reports first emerged that Steenkamp may have been mistaken by Pistorius for a burglar, South Africans at home and abroad had their sympathies stirred. The apparent prevalence of violent crime in the country has created a need for constant vigilance, and empathy for Pistorius was forthcoming, with many able to imagine the fear and anxiety associated with the thought of having their property invaded and personal security threatened. A trigger response to an assumed trespasser was understandable. The horrific truth is that of the 16,000 murders which happen in South Africa each year, many relate to domestic violence. Yet there is no sense of fear for our sisters, mothers and daughters. We try to separate ourselves from the criminals out there, who seek to penetrate our security, but fail completely to appreciate the danger already present in too many homes. South Africa is already internationally notorious for its high crime rate, but domestic violence is swept up along with the other crime statistics, and the intimate nature of these crimes goes largely unreported, but for the attention drawn to it by women’s groups. As the South African Police Service does not consider domestic
violence a stand-alone crime when it compiles statistics; it does not have the reliable data necessary to develop effective strategies to tackle domestic abuse. If we can learn anything from this tragedy, it surely must be that violence against women is everyone’s problem. The eyes of the world are on South Africa.
Dr Mamphela Ramphele has officially launched a ‘party platform’ called Agang (Sesotho word meaning ‘build’), promising to “build the country of our dreams”.
by STAFF REPORTER
ENDING weeks of speculation, Dr Mamphela Ramphele’s has officially launched a ‘party platform’ called Agang (a Sesotho word meaning ‘build’) at a news conference in Johannesburg, promising to “build the country of our dreams”. Speaking at Women’s Gaol on Constitution Hill, Ramphele said the party will “declare war on corruption”. Agang already has a website and twitter handle, and will contest the 2014 national elections. Ramphele said, “The country of our dreams has unfortunately faded for many of my fellow South Africans. The dream has faded for my sisters and brothers in rural areas who live under

the threat of being again made subjects of traditional chiefs and other unelected traditional leaders through proposed acts of our own Parliament. The dream has faded for the many living in poverty and destitution in our increasingly unequal society. And perhaps worst of all, my generation has to confess to the young people of our country: we have failed you. We have failed to build for you an education and training system to prepare you for life in the 21st century. “I am here today to invite you, young and old, to re-imagine the country of our dreams and to commit to building it into a reality in the lives of every South African. I have said that I am no messiah. No single individual acting on
their own can build our nation into the country of our dreams. But I am willing to be a bridge between my generation – those of us who fought for freedom who remember not only with their minds but also with their hearts – and that of my children.” However, the news of Rampehele’s party was not greeted with excitement by all: the Lindiwe Mazibuko of The Democratic Alliance said last week that she was wary of a new opposition party as it could fragment non-ANC voters and attract potential DA voters, thus diluting the strength of opposition to the ANC. Details of the new party platform are at on www.agangsa.co.za

From Cape Town to Camden: exclusive
interview with Goldfish Dom from surf-loving SA music duo Goldfish tells us about their guilty music pleasure and performing their biggest UK show ever this week in London… by CHARITY KNIGHT FRESH from the beaches of Cape Town, electro/house/jazz DJ duo Goldfish are coming back to the UK this Thursday 21 February as part of their Three Second Memory world tour. Since the success of their first album Caught in the Loop in 2005, Goldfish have become a household name in South Africa with their mix of styles, appealing to both jazz and house lovers. Singles such as ‘The Real Deal’ have increased their success thanks to the smooth rhythmic beat, reminding listeners of road trips along the South African coastline. With a big following in Ibiza, Holland and Brazil, Goldfish are hoping that their UK stint is going to make a break from the stale pop/indie sound blasting from UK radios, infiltrating us with a bit of Cape Town sun. We spoke to Dom ahead of the big show in London… You’re starting your three second memory tour next week – where are you most looking forward to playing? London is definitely one of the highlights. We’ve got a crazy following in Holland as well, which is mad, they’ve gone completely Goldfish bonkers! We’re also doing two shows in Scotland – in St Andrews and Edinburgh. So all pretty exciting and a crazy couple of weeks. Are you looking forward to releasing your new album (out May 2013)? I cannot wait – I feel like I’ve got a secret I’m not allowed to tell anyone! We have released one song already, ‘Take Back Tomorrow’, and we’ll be releasing a few more singles before the album comes out.
Which is your favourite album you’ve written? That’s a tough one. The thing is, it’s all part of the journey – I know that sounds clichéd – but there have been songs on our first album Caught in the Loop like ‘The Real Deal’ that was just a timeless track for Goldfish. It could have been released yesterday and people would still find something in it that appealed to them. It’s an interesting track for me as it crosses over as a seasoned electro, house hit with a bit of rock and techno – it’s one of those songs that everyone seems to resonate with. Perceptions of Pacha was a massive album and Get Busy Living was a successful album for us – they’re like children, you don’t want to single one out! You’ve collaborated already with some amazing South African and international music talents, is there anyone else – dead or alive – that you would love to record with? Some of the people we’d like to collaborate with aren’t alive – Miles Davis and Miriam Makeba would have been amazing.
I would say that our favourite collaboration we haven’t met yet – we are always finding unknown musicians, singers and producers. It could be an unknown who completely blows our minds, so I’d like to think that the mystery of that is still to come. If I pressed play on your iPod what would come on? Probably a whole lot of test mixes of the album so I probably shouldn’t lose my phone! Guilty pleasure would be Roxette. When you are on tour what do you do to chill out? We love surfing but can’t always do it. We haven’t had a chance to chill out in the UK yet, but in Ireland we surfed. In Ibiza we cliff jump, paddle board and go snorkelling – anything in the water. If you had to write your album anywhere in the world other than Cape Town where would it be? I’d say Barbados as it has such a chilled and good vibe, although I’m not sure we’d get much work done! Goldfish will be playing on February 21 in KOKO, Camden. For tickets visit www.koko.uk.com

Macbeth, and death by social media
THIS is Macbeth month. The shortest and bloodiest. I sympathise with caged birds and I am seriously beginning to question my sanity. I mean, and tie me down here, I even considered a ‘onesie’ for those cosy nights when we are eating disguised horsemeat and watching Wife Swap. ‘How far have I fallen’, I sniff, and reach for another slab of Galaxy. KAREN’S ghost lurks around my desk, languishing with an eerie smirk on her face. I remember when you were a better person, she whispers. Winter in London is
making you pasty, very ‘paysteee’. I can see that slouch; belly hugging the computer whilst staring at Facebook, then Twitter, then back to Facebook as you may have missed something in the last TWO SECONDS! Pathetic. You need to put hand to the dagger and bleed to feel alive again. I thought I would upgrade, start networking. This is the buzzword in business here. One needs to put yourself out there, both physically and virtually. So I surmised this bloody month was the perfect time to clean out the computer, up the game and get social media savvy. Sort of like Palm Pilot. Facebook pretty much sorted. No idea about all the privacy laws but have to date refrained from the iPhone self-adoration pictures. Careful bunny I am – I don’t even accept birthday requests for fear of Big Brother gathering all my very explosive personal details they will one day use to clone a new generation. Twitter? Summer helps there. Sun-assisted chemicals that pop out witty one liners. In Macbeth month I can’t think clearly. I tend to wallow. Tweeting about my sad, grey, wanting-to-kill-everyone month due to lack of space, privacy and mood swings are not conducive

to gaining more followers. No-one wants to know that you had horse lasagne for supper. The real villain last week was LinkedIn, the Hecate of Social Media. Alluring - with the promise of excellent, grown-up businesspeople who will enhance your status and give you oodles of work. Everyone talks about it. ‘Are you linked in?’ they throw casually your way, as if not being linked in is the same as missing a limb, a soul mate. I was ‘sort of’ registered but decided to reload. Disaster. Did I hit a button? All I know is that within an hour I had millions of e-mail addresses on my e-mail. People from the distant past were replying that they would accept me. Others rejected me. Some were very stern about my attempt to contact them via Linkedin. Since then my day begins with countless emails from the bloody big L asking me if I know what Gawie (?) or someone else is up too. Aaargh, I am being stalked by Linkedin, and I myself seem to be stalking others via this networking fiend. So I have opted to claim hormonal imbalance and hope it just goes away. “Out! Out, damn L, I say.” Where are you March?

Mooi man, nog ‘n rekord! AMONG the plethora of biltong curers and milk tart bakers, it is somewhat rare to find purveyors of durable South Africana: something for the home that gives a lasting African touch. However, those diasporans and lovers of the bushveld who thought themselves limited to wooden giraffes in this area will be glad to hear that Unique Tableware Designs can make their formal table settings come alive. Everything in this range has been inspired by the African travels of the team behind Unique Tableware, Harry and Este - two South Africans based in Australia. The range is focused on table linen and kitchen accessories, including aprons and oven gloves, in designs ranging from the abstract to full-colour portraits of the Big 5. This connection explains the affinity between the designs, which vary distinctly from a rustic aesthetic that would complement an outdoor bar to something more abstract, better suited to a formal lounge. Shipping is worldwide and free, and usually takes between two and five weeks from the firm’s South Brisbane office. If the idea of a sending a personally-chosen gift to a friend pining for the veld in the grey north appeals, a few clicks should see the package on its way. For yourself, perhaps browse their online brochure on how to set out a formal table, or – if reading this within days of a family birthday, now might be the time to put in a rush order on those placemats. The full range is available on www.uniquetablewaredesigns.com. Unique Tableware can also be reached on Twitter and Facebook, and at uniquetablewaredesigns@ gmail.com

One city, two nights, three SA dinners by HEATHER WALKER
IT seems there is a South African food revolution afoot in London – and those hankering for a taste of home will be spoilt for choice this month. By sheer coincidence, within the space of three days there will be three feasts made by South African food fanatics in different parts of the capital. On Saturday 23 February SA expat Busiswa Buchan is injecting a South African flavour into the popular supperclub concept with her first pop-up Shebeen Queen scheduled for 30 people in London Fields. The three-course menu includes braaivleis, pap, chakalaka, peppermint crisp tart and melktert. Meanwhile on the same night, south of the river in Lewisham, Denver Bennett of DBFOODS will also be whipping up a mouthwatering three course meal including lamb shank, krummel pap and vrugte-kelkie poeding. Two days later on Monday 25 February SA chef Grant Hawthorne is cooking a sumptuous eight-course, South African-inspired tasting menu at the Thatched House in Hammersmith. Grant’s ‘Taste of the Cape’ menu includes mini bobotie, smoked snoek pate, springbok loin, pumpkin fritter and malva pudding. So – whose dinner will be the best? Booking details for all three dinners on www.thesouthafrican.com.

Ingredients: 30g butter 1 tsp vinegar 125ml milk 200g castor sugar 2 eggs 1 tbsp apricot jam 200g flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda Pinch of Salt For the syrup: 250ml double cream 115g unsalted butter 100g castor sugar 125ml water
Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Using a small saucepan over a low heat, melt 2 tbsp butter together with the vinegar and the milk. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, sieve together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt. In a separate bowl, using an electric whisk, beat the sugar and the eggs together until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in the apricot jam. Fold
all the dry ingredients into the egg mixture, alternatively with the warmed mixture using a spatula. Pour the batter in a greased 15x 10cm dish and bake for 40 minutes. For the syrup: Place the cream, butter, sugar and water in a saucepan and stir over a moderate heat until the butter has melted and the sugar is dissolved, do not bring to the boil Remove the pudding from
the oven, pierce it with a cocktail stick and pour over the hot cream mixture immediately over the pudding. To book one of Angie’s fun cooking courses at The Avenue in Putney, email: angie@angiesteele. com or visit angiesteele.com.

Silicon Cape – cashing in on SA’s best apps Entrepreneur Stuart Minnaar from the Silicon Cape initiative speaks to GTA about his company Studentology. We also ask Angel investor Haji Chana when and why ideas could make serious money.

by JEREMY KUPER and RACHAEL KIRBY STUART Minnaar is the face behind Studentology, an online marketing company that aims to simplify students’ lives through technological means. Now, this driven entrepreneur has developed a mobile application that could, with the help of investors, completely transform student consumer behaviour. It has taken Stuart three years to get to the point at which his app is Nedbank Golf Challenge print ready to launch. “In year one we were an online marketing company in South Africa only, [providing] info, services and sometimes products to the student market,” he explains. “We were fortunate enough to receive grant funding from two different organisations that didn’t require us to pay them back. Year one was purely online marketing so it didn’t really generate any profits or revenue. And that was getting the market onto an online platform.”
Year two saw the release of a Studentology discount card, which enabled the company to analyse its specific market as a consumer. “That ran as a research project for almost a year. The research was to establish whether we can take the student discount card model and integrate it into a mobile app.” And indeed, year three saw the further development of the phone app that Minnaar describes as “essentially a mobile payment application for students. It allows ad(Page 1 9/7/12 12:38:51 the student to walk into the store, access the discount…and pay for whatever they’ve purchased off the app. The entire process essentially connects their phone to the point of sale in the store.” With the business taking up to a 5 percent profit for every transaction completed using the app, Minnaar is pushing for it to reach 500,000 South African students. Meanwhile, multi-millionaire and possible investor Haji Chana’s eyes are firmly fixed upon the
potential for global expansion. The attention of London-based Chana came about as a result of the Silicon Cape Initiative, a non-profit and community driven project composed of technological entrepreneurs, developers and investors. “Silicon Cape is the online environment for technology start-ups in the Cape Town area,” explains Minnaar, “and they selected 11 entrepreneurs to go to London for a week and pitch to a panel of investors, specifically, the Mamba [Mentors] group.” The Mamba Mentors are a group of UK-based South African expats who have built successful businesses and can offer financial backing to fellow South African entrepreneurs with bright ideas. “Each entrepreneur got to [present] a three minute pitch to the panel which comprised four Mamba mentors,” recalls Minnaar, “and according to that, the Mamba Mentor group made a decision as to who they’d like to invest in, or which company they’re most

interested in. And fortunately for me, I was one of them.” For Chana, the Mamba Mentor who left his position as principal at Blackstone Group in 2011 to launch investment and advisory firm HC Capital, good ideas are at the forefront of any venture. “There are three stages,” explains angel investor Chana. “You have an idea stage, you have product stages, and you have a company stage. I provide seed capital to young entrepreneurs to take [projects] from idea stage to product stage. Once it becomes an attractive product, that’s where I come in as a private equity investor to take it from product to company.” However, there is another monetising potential in Minnaar’s product. The data collected from the student discount card not only records spending habits, but as Minnaar explains, also provides a pool of information that after three years becomes “a data bank of graduates that we can plug different services into.” Studentology’s revenue sits in the transactional procedure that occurs with use of the app. “So our projections now – obviously with assistance from Mamba group – our target is to have 100,000 students using the app [in its first year]. The average spend per month of a student is about 250 Rand [US$30] and we take between 3 and 5 per cent profit per transaction.” “What we’ve projected at the end of year one [with this new investment], our turnover should be around R6m [US$696,500]. So year two our end target is to have 500,000 users, which makes it a very profitable business.” With regards to an investment
from the Mamba Mentors, Minnaar explains, “we decided on a 45 per cent equity split on a ratchet model. If we hit certain targets or milestones by the end of the year, the company gets 10 per cent back. So there’s a growth model plugged into that to ensure that after 3 years, whatever they’ve invested in could be returned.” On the high-risk nature of angel investments, Chana confesses to being “very picky”: “Just having ideas is not enough. People have ideas every single day. It’s all about execution… Having capital is just not enough. You [need to] optimise it, and execute that well. As his potential “angel”, Chana praises Minnaar’s attributes. “He’s not depending on anyone, he’s making his own fortunes. You have to have that tenacity and persistence.” Still though, there is much to consider before investing. “It’s not just the money,” Chana continues. “Can I mentor him, can I be a strategic investor? In investment terms it’s called smart money. It’s not just writing a cheque…what we do is build ideas within our own company itself.” So what does Haji Chana consider to be the three things somebody needs to get to the final stage? “First the ideas have to be innovative or disruptive. Disrupt an old traditional media. Second thing is, it has the potential to be a large business. And the third thing is, it’s the founder and the team, and I normally like to invest in companies of two people, because it’s better to have two founders, and not one.” For more information see: http://www.siliconcape.com http://mambamentors.com/ http://studentology.co.za

Rand steady in quiet trade Chamber of Compiled by MATTHEW CRIDGE
THE Rand started off the second week of February on the back foot, but not because of the usual suspects, like the Eurozone debt crisis or negative Chinese data, but because North Korea decided it was necessary to test a nuclear weapon. “We’ve seen quite a deterioration this morning‚” said Ockert van Niekerk head of trading at PSG. “The rand/dollar is pretty steady now‚ but the nuclear test hasn’t boded well for emerging markets” (news24.com). After a jittery start to the week, the Rand steadied against its currency counterparts ahead of Jacob Zuma’s state of the nation address. Investors are hoping that his speech will be followed up with sound action against unemployment and wild cat strikes that crippled parts of the mining sector in South Africa last year. By the end of the week the Rand had strengthened to a one month high against the US Dollar and further gains were not being written
off as it broke through the key R8.80/1US$. Going into the new week the Rand started to backpedal slightly again after the G20 summit on Friday last week. “The rand is following the euro weaker as jitters re-emerge about what the G20 will say‚” a local foreign exchange dealer said. Monday is set to be a quiet day for currency movements, with the Markets in America closed due to the national holiday, Washington’s Birthday. GBP / ZAR: 13.64 EUR / ZAR: 11.80 USD / ZAR: 8.84

Commerce survey: EU referendum and effect on business
by STAFF REPORTER
The South African Chamber of Commerce UK would like the opinion of UK-based business people on issues that matter. We have created a delightfully short survey on the 2017 EU referendum and its potential effects on your business and on the South African business community in the UK in general. Please answer the 7 questions in the link below and help us establish a public view. Take the (short) survey online now: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ SACC1
Legally Speaking: Citizenship & Relocation Q A : My wife and I recently obtained British citizenship. We have dual citizenship as well, as we went through the process of protecting our South African citizenship. My wife is now expecting our first-born and I would like to know whether our child will automatically get British citizenship? Also, can you tell us what the case will be regarding South African citizenship?
: Congratulations on your upcoming family addition. Regarding British citizenship - It will depend on where the child will be born. If the child is born in Britain (i.e. British by birth), he/ she will automatically be British and you can simply apply for a British passport straightaway. If the child is born outside of the UK(i.e. British by descent), you will have to do this application through the British High
Commission (in Pretoria if born in South Africa). As you currently hold dual nationality your child will also be able to apply for SA citizenship. You will need to register your child’s birth at the South African High Commission, if born in the UK. Do this shortly after the birth. If born in South Africa you simply register the birth with Home Affairs. Please let us know if you need any further information. What does your job entail? I look after an area we call organisational effectiveness and change in the region, which deals with organisational design, cost optimisation of the company, how we bring best practices into the different emerging markets and facilitating sharing of these practices. And at the same time when M&A opportunities arise I’m also part the team that would look into what the opportunity looks like, and then take it to the key
stakeholders to make a decision. How do you find the UK? This is my third year, and I must admit it was a little bit tough at the beginning, especially for my family but of course when you make a choice in life, you must make things work. It’s always been part of my career plan to branch out and do a stint overseas. I think what has been confirmed by this move is that staying in one country can be too insular, too one dimensional. I’ve always been excited about having a broad perspective in life, and looking at life from more of a global perspective… I’m glad I made the change. Where did you grow up? I was born and bred in a small village called Rolle, a typical South African village where you have no amenities, no running water, no electricity. In those days the career dream would have been a bus driver, teacher, even a nurse, because there were not even real health facilities around for one to dream of being a doctor… just one tiny clinic. I guess growing up in that environment taught me a lot and made me a strong individual. I
appreciate humility, because I know what poverty feels like. I know what it feels like to go without something to eat for a day, and it has made me appreciate life in a different way. These are the kind of values I teach my kids on a daily basis, because you can’t take things for granted. We grew up during apartheid, so there were not many opportunities. But my mum was a very strong character. Actually she’s always had a big vision for what her family can achieve, and I learnt that from her, I think. I would like to go back to my village and make a meaningful difference based on what I have learned outside of home. Having achieved what I have here I can confidently say that South Africans can make it anywhere in the world. As long as they have the right attitude, the right work ethic, if you push hard enough, you can actually make a massive dent and be well respected across the globe. You come here and you’re starting from zero. It takes a big character to work through it and brush off the potential bias you may think could exist. How did you get to where you are now? I was fortunate actually, my mum was a primary school teacher, I went to school very early, I started at the age of four. So as a result, I had an accelerated education. I finished matric when I was 15 and went to the University of Venda. I finished my junior degree when I was 18. That was also quite a tough situation, because my mum didn’t have enough money. Fortunately I worked hard and managed to get a couple of distinctions which got me a bursary from the government. That was my breakthrough because had I not been able to do that I would have dropped out of university for financial reasons, because my mum only had enough money to take me through for half athe year. My brother was already at varsity, so it was difficult. One of the things that helped my mum
Albert Ellis
Chairman and Founder of CambridgeIP
CEO of Harvey Nash Group
to save a bit of money was that we used to sell alcohol at home. Illegally of course and we used to get arrested, but that was a means of survival, so my mum was quite entrepreneurial in that sense. When I was 18, I started working in the old Bantustan government of Gazankulu. They gave me a bursary, so I had to work it back. It was an interesting dynamic because I was active in student politics at university. There was a bit of a guilty conscience about working for an apartheid government but it was
quite clear that things were going to change. I worked for two years, and because of my dreams of bigger things, I was not satisfied with what I had. So I decided to go back to university and do my post-graduate studies full-time. I went to UCT and I did a postgraduate diploma in HR management. I went on to work for big multinationals such as Unilever and BMW until I joined Vodacom back in SA. I also went on to complete my MBA degree which has also been critical in my success as an HR executive.

Zimbabwe resumes playing Hangman
Seven years after Zimbabwe’s last executioner went into retirement, a new hangman has been appointed. Will Zim resume executions? by SERTAN SANDERSON
Book Review:Tendai Huchu’s
The Hairdresser of Harare by ELIZABETH GLANVILLE
THIS charming tale of love and life will touch readers with its portrayal of contemporary life in Harare. Vimbai is a renowned hairdresser at a local salon, still struggling to come to terms with tragedies of her past while single-handedly raising her young daughter. She stumbles into a web of jealousy and rivalry when male counterpart, Dumisani, appears out of nowhere and usurps her position as the best hairdresser at the salon. However, events take a turn when Dumi moves into the spare room in Vimbai’s home, and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. But as the relationship deepens, and Vimbai is welcomed into the home of one of the wealthiest families of Harare, chinks become more pronounced
and Vimbai starts to struggle with the ambiguity and uncertainty surrounding their partnership. The twist in the tale is clear from early on, so the sense of tension that Huchu attemps to create is not as pronounced as it might be, but the story is gripping nonetheless. Although Vimbai’s naivety can start to grate, the reader can’t help but feel sympathetic for her, and the sadness induced by the ongoing theme of pain, loss and yearning in her life was very real. As a novel that takes you right into the heart of the hopes and despair of the lives of Vimbai and Dumi, as well as the country as a whole, The Hairdresser of Harare is an enjoyable read that highlights the wider struggle of a nation within the microcosm of a local salon. I’d highly recommend it, and hope to read more from Huchu soon.
ZIMBABWE has appointed a new “hangman” amidst growing concern that executions may be resumed after a seven-year hiatus. The position of chief executioner had not been filled since 2005, when the last executioner retired, effectively putting a moratorium on executions in the country ever since. The news comes shortly before a planned referendum on Zimbabwe’s new draft constitution is held, in which crimes qualifying for capital punishment will be reexamined among other issues on the ballot paper. The poll will gauge public opinion on the execution of offenders under the age of 21 and above the age of 70 as well as the issue of executing women. However, the appointment of a new chief executioner hints at the government’s own position with regards to the matter. Critics fear that executions may be resumed before the issue comes to the vote. Amnesty International has released a statement condemning the appointment of the new executioner and has requested that Zimbabwe join the growing list of nations that have decided to abolish the death penalty. Zimbabwe belongs to a shrinking club of fewer than 90 countries which still actively practise capital punishment in some form of the law. However, none of its 74 death row prisoners have been executed
in the last decade. Crimes punishable by hanging in Zimbabwe include drug trafficking, treason, murder and mutiny. South Africa abolished the death penalty for all crimes in 1995 with the introduction of the new
Constitution, following years of tireless work by anti-apartheid campaigners and anti-death penalty campaigners. . However, many South Africans abroad continue to face the threat of execution.

Valley of the vines: A wine tour of France
For those who like a tipple, a good deal of the world’s best is found in France. Here’s a guide to some of the more well-known areas such as Bourdeaux and Burgundy - for a wine tour with a fine, full-bodied fling. byLORRAINE WADDELL
WHAT could be better than relaxing in the peace and quiet of the French countryside, watching the sun go down with a glass of local wine in your hand? For wine lovers, a trip to France is about discovering the local vineyards to try the wines right at the source. If you can tell your Beaujolais from your Burgundy, the destination of your adventure in France will depend just as much on your taste in wine as your appetite for the local attractions. For the perfect combination, here is a guide to the sights and wines of some of France’s premier wine producing regions, including Burgundy, the Liore Valley and Bourdeaux regions. Burgundy What to see: The towns of Chablis and Beune are beautiful and charming in their own right and great places to sample the local produce (red wine lovers should head to Beune, whilst fans of white wine should concentrate on Chablis). And don’t miss the Abbaye de Fontenay, a beautifully restored 12th century monastery near Dijon, a good place to

regain a sense of spirituality if overindulging! What to drink: Burgundy is the producer of some of France’s most popular wines, with the main grapes of the region being Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The most popular regional wine is Beaujolais, a light bodied red wine, closely followed by the extremely dry and flinty Chablis Chardonnay. Loire Valley What to see The famous chateaux of the region will be an undoubted highlight for anyone who goes camping in France’s Loire Valley. These medieval stately homes are dotted liberally throughout the valley, often surrounded by stunning countryside The Loire River itself is an undoubted attraction in its own right and is a good place for cycling, walking – or wine drinking! What to drink White wine is the dominant product of the Loire Valley, with Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin being the main types of grape. Try the dry and delicious Pouilly Fume, or the more fruity Vouvray. If you must have red, the valley
does produce the very drinkable Bourgueil and Chinon. Bourdeaux What to see Bordeaux is the unmissable destination for wine lovers who are camping in France. The 18th century city itself is a great place to visit, surrounded by châteaux, vineyards, and great countryside, and if you’ve a taste for more than wine, head north to Cognac to try the famous brandy. The beautiful Royan coast is also located close to Bordeaux and could be an excellent place to base yourself if you choose to camp here. What to drink Bordeaux is widely regarded as the premier wine region in France, and one of the most important wine regions in the world, with one third of the top class wines in France being produced here. The vast majority is red, and you’ll truly be spoilt for choice here, with some of the names to look out for including Medoc, Margaux and Saint-Emilion. Saracens open Premiership account in great style Saracens achieve a comfortable 31-11 victory in first Allianz Park game of the Premiership.
by KEITH MOORE
SARACENS opened their Aviva Premiership account at their new home with a comprehensive 31-11 win against the Exeter Chiefs on Saturday afternoon. A packed house awaited the Men in Black in their highly anticipated debut at Allianz Park, Barnet, to be played on new artificial turf. The team formerly from Vicarage Road looked out of the races in the opening exchanges but came out in the second half and capitalised on their opportunities and used that momentum to stamp an impressive scoreline in their favour. The pressure Saracens had exerted on the visitors in all facets of the
game should have meant that they were comfortably in the lead after 20 minutes, but flyhalf Charlie Hodgson was unable to convert any of his first three attempts at goal. The third attempt came from a penalty that went with a yellow card for Chiefs fullback Luke Arscott who committed a professional foul just outside his 22 following a break from his opposition number Ben Ransom which left him isolated as the only defender. However, despite the extra man, Saracens were still unable to score and in fact when Arscott returned to the field Exeter were 3-0 up. In the end it was Hodgson’s poor kicking that forced them to opt for the lineout

South African to swim world first: Land’s End to John O’Groats Sean Conway, who cycled around the world, is now planning his next crazy record for charity: a never before attempted epic swim by MYAK HOMBERGER
IMAGINE cycling to the shops and back…. imagine cycling 30 miles…. imagine cycling around the world covering 180 miles per day! South African expat Sean Conway is a full time record breaker and he does this sort of stuff for kicks whilst raising huge amounts of money for charity. A successful photographic career and a glamorous lifestyle didn’t fulfill him, leaving him empty. So after years at the sharp end he sold his business for £1 and walked away, just like that. “It was the best thing I ever did and I still carry the £1 note around in my phone cover as a reminder” says Sean. Sean knew that he wanted to enjoy life and find fulfilment while supporting charities and giving back to the next generation. So from a room back at his mother’s house, having walked away from everything, it began. Unlike most of us he didn’t organise a car wash Saturday or a cake sale… instead he thought ‘let’s cycle around the world!’ Sean secured backing, a charity to raise money for and he was off in early 2012. He cycled all the way around until he had a near fatal accident in America that saw
him in hospital for a month with a compression fracture. Up till this point Sean was ahead of the record by a huge margin but this ended his dreams of a record. But just like any good adventurer or comic book hero he had committed to his supporters and the charity to do the challenge and this he did! Out of hospital he cycled a further 12,000 miles and completed what he set out to do. This takes grit, determination and character only a few have and this is what sets Sean Conway apart, a true legend. Obviously the story can’t end there because someone like this cannot sit still! In between writing a top 10 Amazon book on his adventures he has been into schools and has been doing motivational speaking. Not of the plastic, get rich quick type but the sort that empowers and changes people. “I love going into schools and saying that you don’t need to be super human to achieve greatness. If you want to do something you can, normal people can achieve. I did and so can you” says Sean. It’s this infectious and genuine belief that captivates and motivates. Somehow he has also found time to plan his next crazy record: he is going to swim from Lands End to John O’Groats. No one
has attempted it even. It means swimming the equivalent of the English Channel each day for two months! Given that he started training for it two weeks ago and made himself sick swimming one mile he has a lot of training to do between now and the first week of July! But as he points out “I will be training to be in the water 10 hours a day, I will get the hang of it pretty soon”. Will he succeed? Someone like this needs supporting! from a kickable penalty in the 32nd minute. The ball was recycled through a series of phases in front of the Chiefs tryline before it ended up in Hodgson’s hands and he made amends for his missed kicks by ghosting through the Exeter defence to give his side a 7-3 lead, which they took into the second half. Hodgson made a better start to the second half from the tee when he was presented with a chance in the 43rd minute which he duly slotted to extend the hosts’ lead to 7 points. The cushion gave Saracens fresh confidence and they began making the territorial advantage pay off. Hodgson pushed a kick deep into the Chiefs half and his
forwards turned the ball over. Again the pressure of playing in the right places paid dividends when Matt Stevens broke through a tackle to dot down in the 48th minute. Seven minutes later it was the turn of his fellow prop, Mako Vunipola, to break through the tackles and dive over. Both kicks were converted by Hodgson to make it 24-6 going into the third quarter. Vunipola was again on the scoreboard in the 70th minute but Exeter added a try of their own in the closing stages of the game to give Saracens a comfortable 31-11 victory in their first home game of the Premiership in their new stadium.

PROTEAS SECURE SERIES WITH HARD-FOUGHT WIN Proteas take unassailable 2-0 lead in the three match series, earning them their sixth consecutive Test series win.
by JEREMY BORTZ
THE Proteas recorded their fifth consecutive Test win late on the fourth day of the second Test beating Pakistan by four wickets at Sahara Newlands in Cape Town. The win gives the Proteas an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three match series, earning them their sixth consecutive Test series win (stretching back to the home series win against Sri Lanka in early 2012). Unlike the first three Test matches of the year, the Proteas had to fight hard for this victory with Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq’s twin centuries, along with Saeed Ajmal’s ten wickets, giving the Proteas their first real workout of the summer. Pakistan showed a lot more fight in this Test and, although no doubt disappointed with the result, they will be very pleased with their vastly improved performance. Once again in trouble against the new ball on the first morning being four down for 33, they fought back to score over 300 and at one point, the Proteas looked in real doubt of coming close to their 338 when they slumped to 164 for six. Vice-captain AB de Villiers and spinner Robin Peterson rescued South Africa, scoring 61 and 84 respectively. Disappointing with the ball, Peterson changed the outcome of the match with the bat, recording his highest Test score and narrowing the deficit to an inconsequential 12 runs. Saeed Ajmal again showed why he is rated as the best spinner in the world, highlighting South Africa’s frailties against world-class spin bowling, and picking up six for 96
in an incredible 42 overs. Ajmal picked up a further four wickets in the second innings to end with figures of 10-147. It was then up to the bowlers to ensure the target was a manageable one as the Proteas would not have to wanted to chase much more than 225 against Ajmal. They duly obliged and restricted the visitors to 169. Vernon Philander was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 4-40 to end with match figures of 9-99, while Peterson and Dale Steyn each finished with three scalps. Although the Proteas lost wickets at regular intervals, they never looked under real pressure chasing a moderate target, particularly after captain Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla added a quick 53 for the second wicket. Amla was eventually out for a very wellplayed 58 but by then the work had been done and the Proteas knocked off the remaining 32 runs without much trouble. At the post match press conference, Smith rated the win as one of the most rewarding in his 100 matches as captain of the side. “We were under pressure on day three and we needed two days of big performances and to get that from the guys was special.” “The conditions were challenging, it is not often that a spinner plays such a dominant role in South Africa, so to have come through with the win is big for us.” The Proteas will be looking to end off their spectacular Test season with a win when the third and final Test gets underway at Centurion this Friday 22 February.
