South Africa opens its biggest solar plant to power 80 000 households | The new 96 megawatt photovoltaic solar power project in South Africa’s Northern Cape province is now online and will help the country meet its critical electricity needs

by Staff Reporter The Jasper plant, near Kimberly, is the largest on the continent and can produce 180 000 megawatt-hours of energy a year for South African residents, enough to power up 80 000 homes.

The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and is fully operational, SolarReserve, the developer, announced on 11 November.

Jasper is located in a solar park near Kimberly that also includes the 75 MW Lesedi solar power project, which came online in May. Also on the cards is the evenbigger 100 MW Redstone concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) tower. SolarReserve, along with partner ACWA Power, is bidding for the planned Redstone CSP project, which will use of SolarReserve’s CSP technology with integrated energy storage.

As part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), a percentage of total project revenues from the Jasper project will be set aside for Enterprise Development and SocioEconomic Development for the

benefit of the local communities.

“In addition to helping South Africa meet its critical electricity needs, the Jasper Project will bring long lasting economic benefits to the region,” said SolarReserve’s CEO Kevin Smith.

80 000 households With more than 325 000 PV modules, the Jasper Project will deliver 180 000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity a year for South Africa residents – enough to power up to 80 000 households through a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, the South African power utility company.

The project also marks Google’s first renewable energy investment in Africa.

Thousands of mirrors CSP uses thousands of mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto a central point to generate heat, which in turn is used to generate electricity.

More than 10,000 tracking mirrors called heliostats reside in a 1,500 acre field where they reflect and concentrate sunlight onto a large heat exchanger, called a receiver, which sits atop a 550-foot tower.

The project was developed by a consortium consisting of SolarReserve, the Kensani Group, an experienced empowerment investment player in South Africa, and Intikon Energy, a South African developer of renewable energy projects.

Equity investment and ownership for the project was provided by a group of international and South

African shareholders who jointly have experience in all aspects of development,funding and operations of solar energy projects, including the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), Intikon Energy, Kensani Capital Investments, Google, the PEACE Humansrus Community Trust, and SolarReserve.

These are just some of Steve Hofmeyr‘s slurs from the last few years. The man has been making the news for all the wrong reasons for quite some time now, and the one and only Chester Missing — brainchild of Conrad Koch — noticed.

Missing made some brave comments on his show a while back, encouraging businesses not to support Hofmeyr’s slurs by boycotting him. And so we all became involved in the Chester vs Steve game… only, this isn’t really a game is it?

These are the ramblings

of a far right, self-confessed Afrikaner nationalist who, according to Missing’s lawyer, Steven Budlender, likes to make bold statements, but who’s not willing to be criticised for them. According to Dan Roodt, Hofmeyr’s lawyer, “there is a semantic war against Steve who is out there all alone, except for his support.”

The whole row went next level when Hofmeyr got a court order against Missing, barring him from bullying poor ol’ defenseless Steve. Budlender argued that Hofmeyer is in the public eye and as a public figure, should be subject to more criticism… especially if he’s going to be making outright racist slurs on a regular basis.

“Hofmeyr is well known for making controversial statements, and has publicly and vociferously supported right wing politics,” said Budlender. “He wants to continue making provocative statements and when people criticise, he says

they’re not entitled to criticise him and therefore hides behind a protection order, Steve wants to have his cake and eat it.”

Budlender referred to a Constitutional Court judgment in the Laugh it Off case, which concerned T-shirts which used satire and parody to take on SA Breweries’ trade mark for Carling Black Label beer.

“Judge J Sachs ruled… a society that takes itself seriously risks bottling up its tensions and treating every example of irreverence as a threat to its existence. Humour is one of the solvents of democracy,” Budlender said.

The magistrate eventually sided with Budlender, chucking out Roodt’s case.

Benoni man arrested in London for allegedly importing R13 million worth of heroin | Scott Parker was arrested last week. We spoke to his employer, Samantha Cary, who is convinced he is innocent and the he, or her company, are being set up

Government loses R35 billion more than last year to irregular spending

by John Cole-Morgan Scott Parker, a 43-year-old Springs Boys’ High School alumni, was arrested at London Heathrow on the morning of 21 November.

Parker, who has worked as a pet relocation consultant since 2008, was transporting three cats for clients of the company he works for — Noelmed Agencies CC, trading as “Animal Travel Agency” or “Ezee Animal Transport”, based in Johannesburg.

After unloading the cats, Heathrow Animal Reception Centre staff noticed that the empty cages felt unusually heavy. Upon closer inspection, the cages were found to have a false bottoms, and a combined weight of 15 kg of heroin was discovered, which is said to have a street value of £750 000 (R13 million).

Upon discovering the narcotics, Britain’s National Crimes Agency arrested Parker, and the cats were safely returned to their rightful owners. Parker, who holds dual nationality (South African and British), has been charged with importing a ‘Class A’ drug into the UK. He later appeared in the Uxbridge Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody, without bail, until 4 December when he will appear before a judge at the Isleworth Crown Court. Parker currently lives in Benoni, Gauteng.

Parker started working for Noelmed Agencies CC in April 2012. The company offers services to ensure the safe international transport of animals (mainly dogs, cats and birds). The South African spoke with Samantha Cary, the director of the company. Cary says Parker was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and there is no doubt in her mind that he is being set up.

According to Cary, Parker had arrived in the United Kingdom prior to the animals leaving the boarding house in Johannesburg.

“There is no plausible way that he could have possibly done this, as he was already sitting in the UK. So it would have been extremely difficult for him to have any involvement whatsoever,” said Cary.

Cary added that Parker left the UK even before the cats, who were all in boarding facilities. She said the boarding house “loaded those pets themselves”. Cary went further to say, “The fact of the matter is [the animals] left South Africa, it left in normal condition, with no variations and no differences. However when it arrived in the UK we are being told a very different story and there are very little facts at this stage.”

were taken to the airport by the boarding house, not by Parker or her team. The animals, however, after being weighed in, sat at the airport for five and a half hours before being loaded on to the aircraft. Cary says there was “ample time for anyone to do what they needed to do or wanted to do.” “[Parker’s] sole purpose was to collect, deliver to the client and come home,” said Cary.

According to the The International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines, one should “feed the animal only a light meal and a short drink approximately two hours before dispatch and exercise the animal immediately before dispatch”. With Parker having been in London at the time the animals were loaded at OR Tambo, the authorities will be investigating the individuals who had contact with the animals prior to their departure.

The South African approached the Heathrow Animal Reception for comment but at the time of publication these calls were not returned for comment.

Cary was extremely protective of Parker and his family, with whom she has a close relationship.

Cary explained that she was trying everything possible to get solicitors to help Parker and how the people around him were shocked and terribly sad this was happening to such a “great guy”.

Ironically, Cary and her team were trying to “up their service level” of their company and save costs by opening a UK arm to the business.

She described the company as a small “family-run” business where the small team “graft [their] butts off.” According to Cary, Parker has no criminal record and doesn’t drink.

Yet she concedes, He was “your average naughty teenage boy… until they become adults and husbands and everything else. He is your normal average

person. There is no way in hell he would have EVER been involved in this. Not ever.”

No doubt the authorities in both South Africa as well as the UK will be investigating this closely.

According to Cary, the UK authorities have searched Parker’s room and car in the UK and found nothing of interest. Parker had his blood drawn for drug-testing and his possessions analysed for traces of drugs, and Cary is certain that all tests have and will continue to come up with no damning evidence against Parker.

Cary tells us she has co-operated fully with the authorities in their investigation. The Hawks have already visited Cary at home and at her business and she says they have not unearthed anything untoward.

Cary stated: “My feeling right now is I know he has been set up, and I don’t know why. We are trying to work out… was it an opportunity thing from the airline where someone saw an opportunity, and possibly marked those boxes, and were going to watch for the marked box. […] Had he by some chance taken delivery and left that airport, what would have happened to him afterwards, what was the intention?

“He is being framed. We don’t know if it is intentional, was the idea exactly this, was it him they were after, was it the business they were trying to fold? We have some very nasty competitors out there, that go to any lengths to fold my business.”

Cary ended by saying “this is a man who is a family man, who dedicates his life to his wife, his family and work. That’s it. He is one of my most dedicated persons around.”

Parker appears in court of Thursday, and if found guilty faces life in prison and an unlimited fine or both.

Sketchy spending of public money by national and provincial government departments soared from R27 billion in the 2012/13 financial year to more than R62 billion in the 2013/14 financial year.

That’s a hell of a lot of money to be wasting folks.

Problem is, they’re not just wasting any money on fast food, expensive cars, irregular tenders handed out to their mates and porn downloads; they’re wasting OUR money.

This was revealed in auditorgeneral Kimi Makwetu’s report for the 2013-2014 financial year, which was tabled in parliament yesterday.

Yes, the ANC and EFF found time to calm down for a moment so that some actual work can be done before year-end.

The report clearly shows that “72percent of government departments and public entities were ignoring or not complying with laws that govern the spending of

taxpayers’ money, such as the Public Finance Management Act.” “It was worrying that 309 national and provincial government departments and entities were responsible for R62.7-billion in irregular expenditure, which meant there had been deliberate flouting of the law for what could be sinister reasons,” said Makwetu.

Makwetu singled out Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape as the big spenders, with their combined wastage and theft sitting well over R10 billion.

The besieged Department of Transport and its National Roads Agency accounted for more than R3-billion in irregular spending. Ai toll… I mean, tog.

Of all the municipalities and provinces audited, only 119 departments and public entities received clean audits in the past financial year; with the Western Cape coming out as the most effectively run province in South Africa.

Remembering Nelson Mandela; a tribute by 21 ICONS | “Nelson Mandela’s legacy is the South African community. Every breath we take stands as a testament to his sacrifice. As we move forward, his contribution becomes an organism that lives and dies with the choices that we make as South Africans,” says Adrian Steirn, co-founder and director of 21 ICONS South Africa

BY STAFF REPORTER Nelson Mandela, a monumental figure who was, and is, revered by many, touched billions around the globe with his compassion, honesty, integrity, tolerance and empathy.

When he died the world went into mourning and there was a dreaded sense that one of the last men who stood for peace, justice and equality had been returned to the earth.

Condolences poured in from around the world. Dignitaries and diplomats, prime ministers and presidents, lords and ladies, domestic workers and teachers, lawyers and children came together to grieve and pay respects to the most admired and respected of all world leaders of the 20th century.

This year will mark half a century since this unwavering activist stood on trial for his opposition to apartheid. Facing the very real prospect of execution he delivered his famous Rivonia Trial speech in which he declared he would prefer to live, but was also prepared to die for a free South Africa. It is also a year since the great icon passed and the world tried to make sense of the loss and reshape their realities.

"During my lifetime I have dedicated my life to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which I hope to live for and to see realised. But, My Lord, if it needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

Inspired by the life of Nelson Mandela, 21 Icons, a visual celebration of the lives of men and women who have carved pivotal moments in our nation’s progress and our new democracy, and it tells the stories of people who have continued his legacy – whose lives have made the world a better place.

The project seeks to celebrate those who have achieved success and widespread recognition, as well as individuals whose work has been conducted without prior acclaim.

After spending 27 years in apartheid's prisons, Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994. He united a fraught and fearful country, bringing together blacks and whites when South Africa was living through violent and troubled times.

When Nelson Mandela stood on

the steps of the Union Buildings on 10 May 1994, South Africa was a divided, scared and angry country.

Instead of seeking revenge for his years in prison and the oppression of his people, he extended his hand and began the journey of uniting this diverse country into a rainbow nation. Through sheer strength of character and the warmth of his personality he took the country from the brink of war to the blossoming of hope.

What is most notably remembered by many was his generosity of his time with people. Everyone wanted to meet him, even for just a snatch of conversation or a handshake.

Many sought a philosophical conversation or a stirring debate.

And he generously gave attention to many.

Mandela was a man of wisdom and insight and he strove to inspire citizens to become the leaders of tomorrow. He believed education was the most powerful weapon to change the world and was steadfast in his intolerance of racism.

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

At the end of his presidency he continued to work for a better South Africa, mainly through his many foundations.

In his autobiography, fellow 21 Icon Ahmed Kathrada recounted that he and Mandela affectionately called one another madala, isiZulu for old man.

"Charming and charismatic, he has both a magnetic personality and a commanding presence," Kathrada wrote.

"An uncommon amalgam of peasant and aristocrat, he is a living paradox: a democrat par excellence, with just a touch of the autocrat; at once proud but simple; soft yet tenacious; obstinate and flexible; vain one moment and humble the next; infinitely tolerant but also impatient."

Indeed, he is missed, but his legacy lives on.

It was his admiration for Madiba that inspired Adrian Steirn to create 21 ICONS South Africa, “I set out to meet and photograph Nelson Mandela. And when that happened it changed my life,” he says. Steirn formed a relationship with the Mandela family that led to him being invited to photograph the statesman on both his 93rd

and 94th birthdays at his home in Qunu. “To spend time with him and his family was amazing. To be there and absorb it all and to get an understanding of the love, the dynamics that goes on, was incredibly intimate.”

From these meetings poured the inspiration for celebrating Madiba and all the other icons in South Africa who have shaped the county.

It was important for Steirn to bring the message across that Madiba may be the most revered icon, but that he had not acted alone.

Madiba always recognised that

he could put his remarkable legacy and people’s admiration for him to good use to make things better for the poor, the marginalised, the oppressed.

The resulting portrait shows Mandela’s image reflected in the mirror — looking at us as we look at him.

“Nelson Mandela has come to symbolise hope for many South Africans. He is a man whose life and principles have captured the imagination of the world. I wanted to shoot a portrait that reflected his legacy — a legacy that we can all carry into the future by sharing his

integrity and belief that a bright future lies ahead,” says Steirn. “I asked Madiba to hold the mirror and look into it as if reflecting on his life. And when you look at the portrait, I hope the viewer is prompted to reflect on his legacy and on our future.”

by Mark Hortop It’s 1977. I’m sitting on the couch in my grandparents’ lounge looking up at a large painting of an African veld scene — springbok grazing on little tufts of grass sprouting from the hard, dry earth.

Slowly the room dissolves and I am transported to that place. I can feel the sun on my face, smell the dust and hear the birdsong. This is not overblown childish nonsense; such is the artist’s mastery of light and the Southern African bush that it requires no great effort on my part to be transported through the portal of the painting.

“It’s a Paul Rose,” my grandfather says as he comes back into the lounge, “can you see the tortoise?”

The tortoise — a signature Paul employed, partly as a treat to engage his children in his work – always hidden, sometimes infuriatingly so. I find it,

dangerously close to the hooves of the largest antelope.

Fast-forward to 2014: 37 years later I am sitting on a rocking chair in Paul Rose’s Camberley Cottage.

It is cluttered with the sixty artworks he brought over with him when he left South Africa to join his children in Britain. I’m here at the behest of The South African and it’s all about those sixty works of art, apparently the last pieces Paul will ever paint of Africa. I ask him if that is true and he tells me: “My eyes are going. I’m flogging these last sixty and giving fifty percent of the proceeds to Save the Rhino.” He laughs as he registers the shock on my face, “I’m mad I know; but they’re going to be gone sooner than you think if we don’t do something.”

The portraits of his three children on the wall offer clear evidence that his talent could have taken a different path, but his love of

African wildlife meant that there was only ever going to be one focus for him. That focus brought him significant success, financial and otherwise, in a career that has spanned over forty years.

His work has been exhibited all over the world and can be found in galleries in America, Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Japan and Taiwan.

Most significantly for the rugby lover, the Springboks ‘bok was designed by Paul. The late, great, Danie Craven, unhappy with the slightly scared-looking spronking springbok on the Springbok jersey, commissioned Paul to design a new Springbok badge, which he did. His version has remained, virtually unchanged, on the green and gold ever since.

Just before I leave I have one last look around his lounge. “Doesn’t it make you sad?” I ask, pointing at the work on the walls and piled up against the furniture.

“No it makes me happy. It allows me to remember.”

And that’s when I realise why I enjoy his art so much: beyond its incredible verisimilitude and attention to detail — and the mastery of light — it allows me to remember an Africa that I have lost, but can recapture every time I look at my latest acquisition: a painting of a loose-limbed cheetah striding purposefully into the teeth of an approaching thunderstorm, eyes firmly fixed on its prey.

Clayde Baumann scoops Best British Hair Colourist award | The story behind the UK’s best hair colourist, Clayde Baumann. We asked him what inspired him, how he achieved the top accolade in his field, and what role did his life in South Africa played in him reaching such great heights

by John Cole-Morgan Clayde Baumann, originally from Johannesburg, has been living in London since 2007.

Baumann having reached a point in his career where he felt he wanted to reach a little bit higher, learn a little bit more, travel and see the world. Baumann wanted to be valuable as a member of the diaspora and gain as much knowledge as he could before returning to South Africa.

Baumann matriculated from King Edward School in 2000, winning a bursary to study with a celebrated salon chain Terezo Hairdressing.

Terezo was exactly what was needed to cultivate his skills, using both a salon based experience as well as an in-house fully accredited Melville based college under the Terenzo Hairdressing umbrella.

Over a three year as an apprentice, Baumann completed the require training and education to be a fully accredited hairdresser.

After the time with Terenzo, Baumann opened his own salon in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg in the beauty salon of Vivienne Budge. After a year of operating out of the beauty

salon, Budge said it was clear the Baumann was outgrowing the space at their shared salon. Baumann had already won two awards at the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Awards in 2005, and after a long think he decided it was time to spread his wings and move to London in December 2008. The journey was not easy, but Baumann was to land in London just days before the economic crash, and the start of a recession that almost destroyed his hopes for a cushy London life. So he went from a high flying career to being unemployed, as the job offers that were in place before leaving SA were all withdrawn due to the recession.

Eventually Baumann found a place at the Hammersmith branch of Sax Hair and Beauty. Originally started in Darlington, Sax opened a few offices in the South of England.

With the recession and the opening of Westfield White City, the role sadly was not what was hoped for. Baumann started as a junior stylist and learnt the differences in the London market from what the market he knew in South Africa.

After a few months, Baumann was put forward to the Art Team at Sax

and eventually his job was split between working with the art team and styling hair. Baumann’s input in the Art Team was so valuable that when the Hammersmith salon closed down, he simply moved over the Art Team on a full time basis.

Being on the Art Team meant working a full week preparing the next week’s training, then flying out to Europe to train and build a curriculum for the Sax trainer. This added a new string to Baumann’s bow and ticked the boxes of being able to travel, set a new curriculum for the training within a spectrum of the course, and added a skill set to his base.

After two years at Sax Hair and Beauty, Baumann entered the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Awards getting to the regional finals. It was time for a new challenge and Baumann took a little over a year to work at Rush on Oxford Street, getting back into cutting hair. At the end of his time there, Baumann had a clear goal now of exactly what he wanted to do for his future, being finding a space where he would be able to get a nice balance of having education, creative work, working with clients, having and nurturing the relationship with clients, working on shows, photo shoots and be able to expand in all ways to increase his skill set and share that with people to improve the hair industry.

In December 2012, a turning point happened in Baumann’s life. A close friend was diagnosed with terminal

pancreatic cancer, and Baumann took a leave of absence from his career to focus on his friend. This time out from work gave the clarity and time for Baumann to not only be with his friend Michael before he passed away, but also to establish what his next move was to be.

Michael suggested Baumann move a little further outside of Zone 1 & 2: “Look a little further out of central London because London is eating you up Clayde,” said Michael.

After Michael passed away, Baumann by chance came across an advert for a job at his current salon finally accepted the role as creative colour director at D&J Ambrose in Pinner.

Here, at D&J Ambrose, Baumann has found everything he is looking for. He harnessed his skill set and focused it to being the best that he can be. In 2013, he was placed in the top ten Wella Colour technician awards, and working as a Wella stockists store, Baumann did his Wella Master Expert Colorist degree and is fully accredited in the United Kingdom now. After a string of finalist spots in the Trend Vision finals placements, in October 2013 — while doing the hair for the editor of the hair magazine Estetica — Baumann asked to write for the magazine and now has an on going monthly feature hair colour contribution for the publication.

Baumann feels that there has always been a stereotype that people who couldn’t do anything else

became hairdressers as a “trade”.

The term trade potentially having negative inclinations compared to the more seemingly ‘professional’ careers of the lawyers and accountants. However, the science of colouring, the artistry of being able to style hair, the skill needed to create a person’s new look can never be underestimated, and Baumann has spent the last 15 years debunking the stereotype of the ditzy blonde hairdresser.

The future for Baumann seems bright. Training classes are opening up all around the world with a possibility of even a trip to South Africa to start the diaspora he set out to do all those years ago. Having won the award he will continue writing his monthly column for the magazine, his blog will continue to entertain us, he will happily continue at his salon he calls home and in the next 18 months he will marry his partner Franc. Baumann hopes to continue getting as much experience and exposure to the hairdressing world and continue to improve his skill set and never stops appreciating how lucky he is and how blessed his life is.

But is it an MCC? The real question when buying your champers | How do you know if your champers is the real deal? And should you feel bad if it isn’t? If you are buying South African Methode Cap Classique (MCC) — we think not

That’s how Dom Pierre Perignon himself described drinking champagne. But he may well have said it about MCC. A recent wine tasting dedicated to sampling bubblies from the Western Cape region of South Africa has left me utterly convinced that the Western Cape winelands offers top-end bubbles at a fraction of the price that one would pay anywhere else in the world, and that saying “Oh, that’s not real Champagne” is a borderline lie, invented to promote an elitism of some kind.

I’d like to put an end to all that, so I’ve compiled a few facts ready for dropping at your next party, should someone try to tell you otherwise.

The differences between Champagne, Methode Cap Classique (MCC) and Sparkling Wines There is just one major difference here (besides the price, of course): only grapes grown in France, in the region of Champagne, can be used to make sparkling wine using the Methode Cap Classique that will be labelled champagne. It is purely the location that has dictated the naming process. Other than that, the actual wine making process from fermentation to bottling is exactly the same. As long as you are buying an MCC and not just a sparkling wine, you can be rest assured it is champagne, except for whence the grapes were sourced. Since MCC and sparkling wine is ninety-nine per cent of what the world has at its disposal (unless you live in France) the real question one should be: is it an MCC (made in the classical Methode Cap Classique style) or is it a carbonated beverage called sparkling?

In most cases, the price is a sure indicator, as the MCC’s need to spend at least six months on the lees (some vintages can spend as long as two to four years on the lees) before a secondary fermentation (another few months) takes place in the bottle itself. So, if you are buying a bottle of bubbles and it’s only fifty bucks out of pocket, it’s probably not an MCC. What goes into an MCC? Most MCCs are white and comprise either 100% Chardonnay or a Chardonnay blend. Pinot Noir, most often seen as a red wine,

is frequently used to blend with Chardonnay grapes to make MCC. Bear in mind that almost all, except for a handful, of varietals of wine grapes run white/clear juices, it’s just the time left on the skins that gives a wine its colour. A couple of hours on the skins will yield a light pink colour while days or weeks will leave a redder, darker colour.

MCC Etiquette MCC is traditionally served chilled, but it is a matter of preference. A study by the French University Reims ChampagneArdenne found that champagne keeps its fizziness for longer when it is served at 18 degrees Celsius, not ice-chilled. Despite popular belief and force of habit, bubbly does not have to be served in a flute – but it is sexier to do so and it has the benefit of the experience of the little tingle from the carbon dioxide at the top of the glass. A good compromise between a standard wine glass and skinny flute, is stemmed glass that is elongated but with a wider rim for ease of drinking. When pouring, be sure to tilt the glass as to not lose too much fizziness.

Here is a basic list of MCC jargon: MCC refers to the French Methode Cap Classique which dictates how exactly the wine is fermented and bottled.

Mousse refers to the bubbles in your mouth when you taste / drink

the wine. The average glass contains about 1 million bubbles.

On the nose refers to the aroma of the wine.

The finish refers to the after taste the wine has. A long finish means that the taste lingers.

Thanks to a publicity boost from celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Katy Perry and Jamie Oliver, folks are crazy for kale. It’s delightfully cheap considering its superfood status with high levels of vitamins A, C and K, iron, calcium, magnesium and fibre.

Kale is more frequently available as a dark leafy green but you’ll also find it in vibrant shades of purple and white.

Leaves can be smooth or curly.

Ideally, buy whole leaves, so you can remove the stems before chopping them up, rather than prepared supermarket bags. Its slightly bitter flavour is reduced by blanching, and a little acid enhances its rich earthiness. Try curly kale with smoked bacon, baby turnips, chestnuts and blue cheese — yum! This side dish works particularly well with steak.

This is how I make it: Ingredients 200 g kale, chopped

8 baby turnips, peeled & halved, or a turnip peeled & diced into 1” cubes 25 g butter 1/2 pack smoked bacon 100g blue cheese 100g canned chestnuts, halved (optional) 1 tbsp sherry vinegar Juice of 1/2 lemon Seasoning to taste Method Blanch the baby turnips for 8 minutes, or if using diced whole turnip, 20 minutes.

Blanch the kale in salted boiling water for 3 minutes, refresh in cold water, drain and pat dry using some kitchen towel Chop the bacon into 1 cm slices and fry off in the butter until crispy in a large frying pan.

Add the cooked turnips and chestnuts, if using. Stir in the kale and sherry vinegar, tumble the ingredients together and sauté for a few minutes, then crumble in the blue cheese.

Add a squeeze of lemon juice and season to taste.

‘Tis the season to be on duty | Christmas for me revolves around whether I am working or not. As an ‘essential worker’, inevitably I tend to be on shift

by Moira Rowan One thing is for certain, the Brits take the festive season very seriously. Some departments I have worked in organised the Christmas rota two months in advance.

I have heard every excuse in the book as to why some staff cannot or will not work. They will use every ploy to get you to work – Pulling rank – I have a higher rank than you, therefore you will work both Christmas and New Year.

Pity party – I have small children, they will be disappointed if I am not there to open presents with them.

Bribery – We will give you extra days off/money if you work over Christmas And so it goes on.

Christmas in Cape Town was different; it seemed that we would celebrate on the 25th and that

was it, but in the UK it’s a more protracted affair, with endless, drinks and mince pie parties, carol services and traditional pantomimes.

Is it my imagination, or does the UK grind to a halt from about the 24th of December till about the 6th of January the following year?

For me Christmas has become about family. I seemed to have, over the last few years gained some adopted grandchildren. The family is expanding with four under seven years old and another two on the way. One will hopefully be born on Boxing Day, and then the other eight weeks later. Last year, my adopted daughter in law gave me the ultimate birthday present. She went into labour, at six am on Christmas day, and Finley her son was born on the 27th of December, my birthday.

Being the adopted ‘Nan’ has

some pros and cons: the presents can get expensive. The four year old gave me a list of what he wanted.

Top of the list was a £20 Batman car.

I rationalised that as he would feel a bit left out with a new baby in the home, I would get it for him. I guess he broke it, because soon after he got it he told me it had gone to hospital to be fixed.

The school nativity play, which I get to attend, can be very entertaining.

The three year old was dancing so much in her play last year that the top of her dress fell down. She came bounding over to the audience and demanded to know if we had ‘seen her boobies’. Her mother assured her that we had, which she found screamingly funny.

Right now we are writing letters to Santa, and making contingency plans for the new arrival. Every year is different, and special in its own unique way

by Staff Reporter Authenticity From the summit of Chamossière Mount, you can make out Lake Geneva to the north, Mont Blanc to the south and the Swiss border as close as chucking cheese; this is ‘regte egte’ ski country. For South Africans the real drawing card for Morzine is that it was an Alpine town before skiing was an international obsession. This means the resort has retained the character of its past, with wooden facades, sculpted balconies and roofs covered in Morzine slate (and snow at this time of year).

It has held onto this rustic charm by avoided the building of large apartment blocks. This means the après-ski has depth, is rooted in tradition and is simply classy.

Wallet-friendly Sharing a chalet with other skiloving strangers has always been the idea of the perfect ski holiday for Saffas and Morzine has an abundance of small independent catered chalet companies. South African entrepreneur claims top honours at African Enterprise Awards | South African entrepreneur Avi Lasarow has been recognised as Africa’s leading entrepreneur at an awards ceremony held in the United Kingdom by staff reporter Avi Lasarow, 38, was on Saturday awarded the African Entrepreneur of the Year award at the African Enterprise Awards, largely for his work in driving genetic research in the health and fitness market globally. The largest African awards ceremony of its kind in the UK, the African Enterprise Awards celebrates the achievements of all African professionals and entrepreneurs including all African nationalities.

Judges at the Awards said that Lasarow represents the “passion and hunger of an individual that not only makes things happen, but disrupts niche markets with a positive foot print”.

Lasarow commercialised the world’s first Hair Alcohol Test with his company, Trimega Laboratories; rolled out the first roadside drug testing project in South Africa; was engaged by the Attorney General and the Head

of Civil Aviation of Libya to identify victims of the 2010 Libya Afriqiyah Airways flight disaster through DNA analysis and is working on projects such as a test for foetal alcohol syndrome in new born babies and testing for ARV compliance amongst HIV sufferers in developing countries.

Last year, he founded DNAFit, a British nutrigenetics company that tests and analyses more than 40 gene variants that are scientifically linked to a body’s capacity to respond to training and nutrition. Various English Premier League footballers including South African Kagisho Dikgacoi are using the technology to improve their performance. DNAFit is set to take on Google by analysis of an individual’s complete genome sequence for the benefit of science and research.

In 2002 the Johannesburg-born entrepreneur became the youngest person ever to be appointed as an

Honorary Consul for South Africa to the United Kingdom, when Jacob Zuma appointed him to the Midlands region,responsible for promoting bi-lateral trade, skills transfer and other work as an extension to the South African High Commission in London.

Lasarow, who dropped out of high school aged 16, credits his entrepreneurial drive to living alone in the United States and working in a sandwich shop while studying towards his American grade 12 general equivalency diploma.

“One can be an entrepreneur anywhere. It takes vision; if you can see it then it will happen.

Then you need a plan and people around you who believe in your vision,” he said.

“I also believe that in your business journey if you set out to make a difference as opposed to make money, then the money will follow.”

Rand strengthens despite a stronger Dollar by 1st contact The Rand strengthened modestly against the US Dollar on Friday 21 November, closing at USD-ZAR 10.9500. Rand appreciation against the Dollar occurred despite Dollar strength against most of the major crosses; the Dollar gained ground against the Euro and the Pound, but weakened against the Yen. Appreciation of the local currency against the Dollar occurred alongside strength amongst all but one of the commodity currencies and most of the EM currencies we look at for the purposes of this report. The Rand put in the secondworst performance among the commodity currencies, just ahead of the NOK. This strength was short-lived as the Rand weakened against the US Dollar last Monday, closing at USDZAR 11.0200. Commodities were lower on the day.

Platinum led the decline, falling by 1.9%, while gold was down by 0.4%. Copper fell by a larger 0.7% on the day. Brent fell 0.9%. Last Tuesday a slight sell off of the Rand caused the pair to test resistance at 11.0700, where it was quite well offered in very quiet trade. It looks like December illiquidity has arrived early this year as light flows are tending to move currencies.

Will the seasonal Rand strength help our currency, or will there be more ripples in financial markets

before everyone embarks on their Christmas holidays? Who knows?

Last week was a yo-yo week as the Rand strengthened against the US Dollar on Wednesday, closing at USD-ZAR 10.9600, compared with Tuesday’s close of USD-ZAR 10.9700. Rand appreciation against the Dollar, albeit mild, occurred in line with Dollar weakness against all of the major crosses, with the biggest move seen against the Pound (0.5%). The Rand continued to strengthen on Thursday, banking more gains it made on Wednesday when the USD weakened on data that showed the pace of economic growth in the States was slowing. On Friday the Rand slipped against the USD but still outperformed oil-linked developing currencies that struggled as the price of Brent crude sank to a four-year low after Opec blocked calls to cut global output.

England’s youngest female touch player plays ref |This week saw Catherine Walker – one of the youngest female touch players to play for England – shows off her reffing skills By in2touch walker played for the U18’s England Mixed team at the European Touch Competition earlier this year at the tender age of 13. She loves all aspects of touch and wanted to become a ref in the off season to develop her all round game as a player as well as to have the responsibility to handle a touch game as a referee.

All the players and the Venue Manager were very impressed with Catherine’s reffing skills she had just learnt and she got to ref with Gareth Hinds (who is going to the World Cup in Australia in April 2015 as a referee). Gareth was shocked to learn Catherine’s age after reffing with her in the games and he could not believe how confident and in control she was.

According to Gareth Catherine took to reffing very easily and although she was nervous for the first few times on the field; she took charge of players double or even triple her age in the mixed games she reffed. We are all very proud of her, and if she keeps this up then nothing can stop her in becoming one of the best female

touch players in the future.

On Pitch 1 the rookies of the league, CSSC 3PO’s were taking on the England open mixed team under the guise of ‘Forde Falcons’.

The teams locked horns in the battle of the season so far. Great set plays and team moves from both teams were the order of the day. The England International team were eventually left red-faced when a great intercept try from a second phase attack eventually gave CSSC 3PO’s the two point lead for a 6 – 4 victory.

CSSC 3PO’s left ‘Forde Falcons’ with a lot to think about in their build up to the touch World Cup in Australia next year. With only 2 weeks left in the Sunday touch league it is going to be a close race to the finals and we look forward to the teams battling it out for those final places.

Francois Hougaard wins IRPA Try of the Year Award | Francois Hougaard’s spectacular score in the Springboks’ win over New Zealand in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship has been named as the International Rugby Players’ Association (IRPA) Try of the Year 2014, World Rugby announced on Saturday

by Staff reporter The Springbok scrum-half, who scored the first try of the match in Johannesburg in early October, is the third South African to win the award after Jaque Fourie in 2009 and Bryan Habana in 2012.

Samoa’s Seilala Mapusua, former All Black Jeff Wilson, Ireland’s Alan Quinlan and Dan Parks of Scotland formed the panel of judges

who opted for Hougaard’s effort in preference to the four others shortlisted in Jamie Roberts (Wales), team-mate Cornal Hendricks, Magali Harvey (Canada) and Jonny May (England).

Hougaard brought the Ellis Park crowd to its feet when, in the 12th minute, he dived under the posts to finish off a move that had begun deep in South Africa’s half and

involved all of the backline. South Africa won the match 27-25.

World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “I’d like to congratulate Francois Hougaard on winning this award.

It was a fantastic try. It started from deep within the Springboks’ own 22. There was wonderful elusive running, lightning passing, rapid recycling, a deft kick ahead, which

was expertly gathered and then a well-timed run from Francois finished it off in style. It was a real team effort that demonstrated ambition, enterprise and no little skill against the number one side in the world. In short it was a try that was truly deserving of this accolade.

IRPA Executive Director Rob Nichol added:

“With so many great international tries during 2014, involving both individual brilliance and collective effort, it is never an easy process to settle on one try.

However, when it came down to it, Hougaard’s try stood out for the judges due to the high level of skills involved by different players, and, most importantly, the teamwork required to make it happen.”
