Why is a the controversial Nando's ad from 2012 popular again?
WE WILL TAKE YOU HOME/ONS DOEN DIE GROOT TREK HUIS TOE...
| A tongue-in-cheek new campaign from Nando’s is supposed to encourage South Africans to question xenophobia and intolerance – but has instead been banned by Nicole Holgate Nando's has once again stirred controversy with its provocative new ‘Diversity’ advertising campaign. After the Advertising Standards Authority received several complaints, the antixenophobia advert has been taken off air, not only by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) but by DStv, M-Net and e.tv. The commercial begins with a voice stating “You know what’s wrong with Africa?” The voice continues, “All you foreigners” as we see a scene of ‘immigrants’ trying to sneak over a border. They are then told to “go back where you came from”, in a list that includes Cameroonians, Congolese, Pakistanis, Somalians, Ghanaians and Nigerians and all manner of “non-native” South Africans, including Afrikaners, Europeans and Indians, Sothos, Vendas and others.
As each nationality is listed, they are shown disappearing in a puff of smoke until only a Khoisan man is left, who responds, “I’m not going anywhere. You *$&!#* found us here.” The tag line is that “Real South Africans enjoy diversity” as new menu items are revealed. According to Channel24, the fast food chain plans to fight the broadcasters’ ban. Nando’s marketing director Quinton Cronje believes people have missed the point of the advert. “I’m incredibly disappointed because I think it says a lot about freedom of speech and freedom of expression in South Africa,” said Cronje. An earlier Nando’s statement said, “The advertisement is aimed at addressing a social ill and our approach is one that seeks to have South Africans take a stand against these prejudices by encouraging
them to embrace the diverse inhabitants of our land.” Nando’s have teamed up with nonprofit volunteer group, Cheesekids, to “create pop-up soup kitchens” in parts of South Africa that have been affected by xenophobia, “to walk the talk in galvanising our message of creating dialogue between the diverse”. “Either way you look at it, we were all once foreigners in SA, except for the Khoisan of course,” the company said. The company has also called on volunteers to join the soup kitchen project by visiting www.souperstars. co.za A previous Nandos campaign was banned for its depiction of Robert Mugabe as ‘Last Dictator Standing’ on the grounds of its distasteful nature in the context of the starvation of his people, and was not deemed an appropriate background for a fast food advert.

SA Deputy President says he did not benefit from Eskom coal contracts
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka launches UN report into the progress of the world’s women in 2015 | Today in London, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will be presenting her report on the world’s failure to combat domestic violence by staff reporter The report will be an opportunity to take stock of the biggest barriers for women in the 21st century, according to The Independent. She says, “All countries worry me because of the universality of violence against women. The fact that 75 percent of violence against women is domestic violence is the issue.” Mlambo-Ngcuka is not only the former deputy president of South Africa, but also head of UN Women. According to a recent press release, the UN report is entitled “Progress of the World’s Women 2015-2016: Transforming Economies, Realizing Rights”. It shows that, all too often, women’s economic and social rights are held back, because they are forced to fit into a ‘man’s world’. But, it is possible to move beyond the status quo, to picture a world where economies are built with women’s rights at their heart. The report is being published as the international community comes together to define a transformative post-2015 development agenda, and coincides with the 20th anniversary commemoration of the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China which set out a
comprehensive agenda to advance gender equality. Since Beijing, significant progress has been made, particularly in advancing women’s legal rights. However, as progress shows, in an era of unprecedented global wealth, millions of women are trapped in low paid, poor quality jobs, denied even basic levels of health care, and water and sanitation. Women still carry the burden of unpaid care work, which austerity policies and cut-backs have only intensified. To build fairer, more sustainable economies which work for women and men, more of the same will not do. Progress of the World’s Women 2015-2016, brings together human rights and economic policy-making, and provides the key elements for a far-reaching new policy agenda that can transform economies and make women’s rights a reality. Through solid in-depth analysis and data, this evidence-based report provides key recommendations on moving towards an economy that truly works for women, for the benefit of all. UN Women is the newest department of the international body. Launched in 2010, the first four-year term was run by former Chilean
president Michelle Bachelet. Mlambo-Ngcuka was born in 1955 in Durban, South Africa. She was deputy president to Thabo Mbeki, but her political career came to an abrupt halt when Jacob Zuma took over the presidency. According to The Independent, her husband Bulelani Ngcuka had been the chief prosecutor who initiated an investigation into Mr Zuma’s financial affairs and implicated him in corruption. The investigation forced Mr Zuma to step down as deputy president, and when he subsequently cleared his name and returned to politics as president. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka then left South Africa. When The Independent asked her if she felt her gender ever held her back, she replied: “I’ve been a deputy president of a country, I’m the head of a UN agency and I’ve been able to go to school to doctorate level. I’ve had a past that’s better than others and I was determined. I don’t represent the norm. All that said, I can still be a victim of rape. I have not experienced it, but I could; these advantages do not completely insulate you [from inequality].”
by sa news The Office of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday said it takes exception to statements made by energy analyst, Ted Blom, that the Deputy President had benefited improperly from Eskom coal contracts. Blom said this during a press club briefing held in Cape Town on Friday and an article was published in Fin24. “It is a matter of public record that the Deputy President has divested of his interest in Shanduka Group and no longer holds any mining
interests,” said the Presidency. The Presidency said Deputy President Ramaphosa undertook this divestment following his appointment as the Deputy President of the Republic to avoid any potential conflict of interest. “It is unfortunate that Mr Blom, who presents himself as an industry analyst, would make claims that are factually incorrect. “It is also unfortunate that Fin24 would publish these claims without seeking comment from the Office of the Deputy President,” said the Presidency. – SAnews.gov.za

Love and marriage in the midst of hateful xenophobia
Brand South Africa urges communities in the UK to “Play their Part” to stop xenophobia
| Not even a series of xenophobic attacks in the city of Pietermaritzburg could astop the preparations for an Ethiopian man and South African woman to tie the knot
| Brand South Africa has echoed government’s call and has urged all Global South Africans to support the efforts to stop the attacks on foreign nationals. “We cannot allow attacks on foreign nationals in our country”
by Ntombi Mbomvu, groun up 27-year-old Thandeka Mkhwanazi and Mali Wondawock, 26, hosted neighbours and residents at their home in Cinderella Park at their Umembeso ceremony on Saturday. Umembeso is a traditional Zulu ceremony, where both the bride and the groom’s family exchange gifts as a sign of welcoming one another, usually performed prior to the white wedding ceremony. Despite the robbery of an Ethiopian shop owner on the day, the Umembeso went ahead. Mkhwanazi and Wondawock met four years ago at Cinderella Park, where Wondawock has two businesses. Mkhwanazi said, “I didn’t care about his nationality … I started having butterflies when he was around and as a woman I knew that those were the signs of being in love. “Giving birth to our daughter Ganita in 2013 created a bond that made our love concrete. Women have the strongest instincts and with what I was feeling it became obvious that what we were sharing was something that was legitimate.” Regarding the xenophobic attacks in the city of Pietermaritzburg, she said, “My husband is not going anywhere, we have a family here and he can’t leave his family. We have a two-year-old daughter and that means South Africa is his home now. He is not going back to Ethiopia just because there are selfish people who attack people of their own skin color. “Not even xenophobic attacks will stand in our way. We love each other. I will stand by my husband through thick and thin and I’m going to marry him. People will be watching as they were watching today. Our love is stronger and it can conquer anything. I vow that nothing will separate us,” said Mkhwanazi. Wondawock was accompanied by his brothers, who battled a bit to perform the Zulu dance. He said, “Something about the Zulu culture caught my eye. I came to South Africa in 2009, a year after there had been xenophobic attacks in Gauteng. I had my own fears, but with the love and hunger for a better life, I remained positive. “I met my wife and she became a pillar of strength. I am fully aware of the xenophobic attacks that have spread to the Pietermaritzburg city. I am not scared. I’m now a family man and I have to be with my family and take care of them, no matter what. “I have learned isiZulu; I understand IsiZulu better than English. My wife is also my teacher

and there is a lot that I have adopted so far. I see myself as one of the South Africans,” he said. His wife said, “He won me with his good heart and he is a human being like any other South African. God blessed me with a husband and a caring father to my daughter and a good son-in-law to my family. They accepted him from the beginning; not even once they treated him as a foreigner.” Mother of the bride, Mumsie Mkhwanazi, said she is happy to see people ululating and dancing. “What we are seeing on television and hearing on radio stations is a shame. This is devil’s work; he is trying to divide people who have the same blood and the same skin color. We have heard reports that the attacks are crawling in to our peaceful area. We won’t allow that in this area; we will stand together and fight against such activities. I wish that all people come together and fight against these xenophobic attacks … It is unacceptable and the elderly must act against this wrong doing.” Community Policing Forum member Charles Dlamini said Cinderella Park will set an example. “As the community, we have agreed that we will do anything possible to avoid the attacks from spreading to this ward. We have been living with foreign nationals for years and they have never caused any problems for us. We sit with them and have conversations about culture and other things. There was one incident that just occurred and we responded to it by calling the police. One boy from the area tried to rob an Ethiopian owner of a shop. He was unfortunate that there were community members watching. They stopped him and immediately called the police and he was arrested.” Well, there you have it. The ten scariest, craziest murderers ever to govern on this continent. Millions have died in the wake of their rule, but millions more continue to suffer as their legacy lingers on.
South Africa is internationally renowned for using dialogue to solve differences and problems peacefully. As a peace-loving and law-abiding nation, we are using this noble approach to deal with our problems instead of using violence. The South African government is receptive to people's needs and urges all citizens to use relevant platforms to express their concerns and frustrations, including talking to elected officials in their communities. Anger and violence will never provide sustainable solutions to challenges, but will only bring strife and suffering. We appeal to citizens to play their part in ending these attacks on foreign nationals to exercise restraint and calm. Brand South Africa is the agency mandated to manage the reputation of South Africa while positioning the country as an investment and tourist-friendly destination of choice. We urge communities to assist the police by providing information so that the perpetrators of violence and crime can be brought to justice without delay. Government will ensure justice for all and speed up the process of convicting criminals. While we strongly condemn the attacks, we are aware of, and are addressing some of the issues that have been raised by affected parties. We appeal to our people to support and protect refugees and asylum seekers. We also urge those concerned to refrain from using Facebook, Twitter and other socialmedia platforms to incite violence. We all have a responsibility to promote social cohesion, peaceful coexistence and good relations in the country. Foreign nationals help us to develop a cosmopolitan atmosphere and we welcome their presence. We also want to see an increase in tourism figures from African countries and to share business opportunities, as part of promoting sustainable economic development in the continent. Two weeks ago President Jacob Zuma cancelled his visit to Indonesia, and instead visited displaced foreign nationals in Chatsworth to assure them of the support as government of South Africa. The President also engaged with the Umlazi community to spread the message of peace and tolerance. Last week, in the week commencing 20 April he led a stakeholder outreach programme around the country to engage

communities to start a conversation within our society. He also met with the leaders who are representatives of foreign nationals in South Africa. At the SA Chamber of Commerce Business Awards held last week Thursday the Brand South Africa UK Country Head, Pumela Salela asked the audience to stand to observe a minutes silence in honour of all those who had lost their lives as a result of the recent attacks. The audience were presented with small bags containing a candle accompanied by a card bearing the slogan “WE ARE AFRICA” with a map of Africa to show solidarity with the victims of the unfortunate acts in South Africa and to draw a clear line of condemnation thereof. Salela recalled the words of Nelson Mandela and asked the audience to repeat a pledge to ensure that such acts would never be allowed to happen again and referred to the hashtag that is trending on social media # NotInOurName Brand South Africa also supported and took part in a peace march from Parliament Square in Westminster to Trafalgar Square. The event was organised by South Africans in the UK and members of the African diaspora. The message of “We Are Africa” was carried on placards appealing for tolerance
across communities and a call to South Africans to “Play their Part” to Stop Xenophobia. The peace march reinforced President Zuma’s message that the South African government believes in dealing with the challenges we face together and in finding collective solutions so that these attacks do not happen again. In his Freedom Day address to the Nation, President Zuma applauded South Africans for coming out in their thousands in the past week to register their condemnation of the attacks directed at foreign nationals. He said, “The marches have demonstrated that we are peace loving people who believe in human dignity, human rights and Ubuntu, and that South Africans are opposed to xenophobia, racism and all related intolerances.” Pumela Salela, Brand South Africa UK Country Head says, “Many South Africans at all levels of society have condemned xenophobia and everything is being done to prevent the scourge from happening again” Brand South Africa will continue to drive the “WE ARE AFRICA” campaign through the months of May and June in the UK partnering with various stakeholders from the African community so that we can provide platforms for engagement to ensure that we promote and contribute to peaceful resolutions through dialogue.

Why we love the London Book Fair… | Last week, the London Book Fair 2015 took place at the Kensington Olympia. We went along to meet SA exhibitors to find out how South Africans in the UK can publish their work by john cole-morgan In a world where we are told that the written word is dead – and books will be a thing of the past – it was great to see thousands of people at the London Book Fair 2015 at Kensington Olympia last week. Everyone from authors, celebrities, publishers and book distributors and – many, many book worms – attended the event. Mexico was the main country promoted in the Fair this year but almost every country you could think of was well represented in one way or another, including several amazing and incredibly inspiring people from South Africa. The most current books available from all of the South African publishers were of main interest to me. Poetry was a large focus for this
year’s exhibitors but not exclusively so. Incredible new works by Jonathan Jansen were available from Bookstorm publishers as were works from Jan Braai and many others through Bookstorm. Whilst possibly lesser known authors of the Harmony High Series from cover2cover Books were also showcased as were chilling works from Modjaji Books like Reclaiming Afrikan. Pelmo books also showcased several incredibly talented South African authors with most official languages being in their display. We met up with a few publishers who are both interested in South African stories and helping UK-based South Africans publish their work. Black Letter Media Duduzile Mabaso founded Black Letter Media in 2011. This self-taught
powerhouse, created the website www.poetrypotion.com in 2007 to be able to give a voice to the exceptional local poets' and novelists' work that is traditionally not given the voices they deserve. Mabaso was placed in the top ten of the South African Breweries Kickstart program and was mentored by the SAB to help take her business to the next level. Mabaso writes for television to earn the funds to be able to finance her passion which is the business she was representing at the London Book Fair 2015. Whilst in the thick of the day to day things Mabaso says, “being able to get other voices to trust me with their work is quite gratifying, for them to be able to trust me with their manuscripts and get them out there”. Being a small business and working through fears and doubts, has many
Blue Weaver Mark Hackney from Blue Weaver is an independent book sales and distribution company based in Cape Town. Hackney represents a number of different publishers around the world and not only does he distribute the books but also facilitates the sale of the international rights to the works that have been written. As a major player in the industry within South Africa, Hackney speaks of the complexities between self-publishing and a commercial publishing offer. The advantages of the selfpublishing route are that control rests entirely with the author, whilst the already established mechanisms in place for the commercial publishing contract route means the process can be considerably less stressful. Hackney recommends that any prospective authors wishing to write a book should read this information issued by the South African Publishing Association. Tips on self-publishing A big topic of the Fair this year was clearly the route of self-publishing. Every stand had sections on the pros and cons and the South African exhibitors were no different. A large number of the books on display from the South African delegates were selfpublished for numerous reasons. Louise Grantham from Bookstorm publishers (who operates out of Northcliff, Johannesburg) gave a few tips. She says before starting out with presenting your book you need to work out your market. When you figure out what your market is, communicate with the publisher that already publishes books like the one
you wish to write. Grantham recalls when she was giving an interview on talk radio recently where a poet called in to find out where to send their poetry for publishing and when Grantham asked the caller which poetry they bought and read, who published those works? The caller was not able to answer as they didn’t in fact buy poetry. The irony was pointed out by Grantham to the caller and the tale sadly does show there is a need for people to support other local authors. Grantham went on to explain of the two routes available to publish your works. One is the traditional, commercial publishing route – if you have a book that is commercial for the publisher you are pitching your work to, and the other route is the self-publishing route where you are prepared to take the risk on, and pay the costs of , your book. After various discussions with various publishers, the consensus was clear. These days the book being “good enough” is not as big a factor as one would think. If you pitch your book to the right publisher, at the right time that they need a book exactly like yours, you are in with a fighting chance. Some authors need to do better research on the publishers. If a prospective author has pitched the book to the wrong publisher of course it will be a rejection. Yet this can cause people to stop pitching their work. It is also very important to listen to why the publishing house is saying no to your work. Be realistic when listening to these answers. Like it or not these are industry leaders that you are seeking advice from, so listen to it. And work on that advice from there. If you reject this advice, and don’t make the changes these experts are saying then you stand a risk of having the project fail. One publisher told the story of how a book deal was withdrawn because an author was so determined to use a book cover they deemed worthy, while the publisher said the book won’t sell with that cover. The public – like it or not – will judge a book by its cover, so take the advice you are being given and don’t throw it all away without careful consideration. The London Book Fair 2015 had an excellent representation from South Africa. The love of the written word is as strong now as it was years ago and the talent coming out of South Africa is undeniable. There is no doubt the London Book Fair will always be one of the highlights of the literature world. The help and advice available to budding authors is vast so if you get a chance, drop in next year to see if you can be the next big thing in literature.

Dubbed the ‘Thames Path Migration’, volunteers will march along the River Thames from London Thames Barrier to the source Kemble, Gloucestershire. The awareness and any funds raised over the course of the five- day event are vital for veterinarian workers who look after the ‘Big 5’ game animals – lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos and leopards. Now, they are looking for additional volunteers to take part, support and spectate in this worthwhile cause. With a range of exciting prizes to be won and entertainment-filled camping
each evening to rest your ‘paws’, members of the public are invited to walk, run, cycle or even walk their dog along all or part of the Thames Path under themed sections. Co-founder of charity initiative MegDeanAfrica2015 Dean Philpot of Maidenhead says, “The vets in Africa conduct invaluable work to keep these beautiful animals around. I’m so glad to have this opportunity to support them physically and pass over any donations we have kindly received from the amazing animal lovers of Berkshire.” Importantly, 100% of the money raised will directly support wildlife vets in Limpopo, Africa. Everyone
involved will get a free, high-quality photos and a veterinary report from Dean. With the campaign having already received interest from local artists, craftspeople and wildlife presenter Simon Reeve, Dean is hoping others will register an interest in taking part. To get involved, wannabe walkers can sign up for any or all five sections of the walk by visiting www. AfricanChampions.webs.com. Wearing an animal costume is optional but definitely encouraged. Which of the Big 5 will you choose: an Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard or Buffalo?

Meet the reclusive South African billionaire investor behind Nando’s | Dick Enthoven is one of South Africa’s richest business men — but also one of the country’s most elusive
[●] Dick Enthoven pictured second from right

by Mareike Pietzsch You know this tycoon is elusive when a quick Google Image search turns into a frantic 10-minute quest. Few people know that billionaire Dick Enthoven is not only the owner of Spier and Hollard Insurance Company Ltd, but also of the South African Nando’s restaurant chain whose famous peri-peri chicken took the world by storm. How did Nando’s start? Enthoven got to know the founders Robbie Brozin and Nando Duarte in the 80s, and gave them a loan to expand their Nando’s chain in South Africa initially, and then internationally. A family affair? Nando’s is described as a “private family business” and the main backers and investors is the Enthoven family, providing capital and business acumen to help Nando’s grow locally and internationally. It is a family-owned franchise: son Robby Enthoven heads the UK operation of Nando’s. Robby was tapped to run Nando’s in 1993 when the company had just two branches in west London. His other son Adrian Enthoven was educated at Oxford and is now Chairman of Hollard. And Enthoven’s daughter Mariota is married to ‘Farmer Angus‘ McIntosh who runs the Spier Biodynamic Farm. They supply organic meat to leading Cape Town and Winelands restaurants.
It seems that an entrepreneurial spirit runs in the blood of the Enthoven family. Dick’s own father Robert is Dutch and amassed an insurance fortune ̶ so that’s three generations of business savvy right there. How is UK Nando’s different? It seems that Robby Enthoven changed the focus for the UK brand. It has changed to offering a sit-down as well as take-away service, while the take-away service is the local SA model. In thirteen years, 300 Nando’s outlets were opened in the UK. And of course, dad’s wines from Spier feature on the Nando’s winelist in the UK. Controversy In 2014, The Guardian reported that Nando’s uses a battery of offshore techniques to legally reduce its UK corporation tax bill by up to a third. Quite simply that means the Enthoven family would stand to avoid UK inheritance tax by using an offshore account. Although, the restaurant group points out that it paid £12.6m UK corporation tax in 2013 according to The Guardian. Enthoven’s structures are said to be legal. A spokesperson told The Guardian that, “Richard Enthoven is the ultimate beneficial owner of Nando’s,” the company’s spokesman told us. “He is not resident in the US or the UK.” And so, he does not need to pay any British personal tax. Just last week, the Nando’s advert that shows how ridiculous
xenophobia is was banned. The Advertising Standards Authority received several complaints in South Africa. What is Nando’s net worth? It’s undeniable. Nando’s has become one of South Africa’s biggest export success stories with over 1,100 restaurants in 22 countries. With 29 branches in the UK in 2001, the numbers rapidly rose to 114 by 2005. In 2012, Nando’s registered a profit of £14.7 million – with a 26 per cent increase over the year. Since then, the UK’s love for Nando’s has grown so much that there are now over 250 outlets in the country. Fun facts In the UK, Nando’s is the most popular restaurant on Twitter with the most followers. Enthoven has a love for art and the Nando’s stores in the UK collectively showcase about 5000 South African art works. “I never buy anything with the view of selling it or to invest in it,” Enthoven said in a 2010 interview with Johannesburgbased newspaper Business Day. “I buy it because I enjoy it, because it is important to have it.” People see the brand as being an ambassador for South Africa, using clever ads to make subtle political commentary and implementing a unique style in every restaurant that’s truly South African and supports SA designers.

Cooking with Chef Petrus | Champagne and honey jelly with summer berries | I’m buzzing about bees this week and was fortunate to visit a local bee keeper in Aylesford village. It was a great opportunity to learn more about these important insects and their big role in pollinating the crops we love to eat. A whopping third of our food would not be available without bees by Petrus Madutlela After getting dressed up in all the right gear, it was fascinating to visit the hives and see these amazing creatures at work at a close glance. The nature of honey is influenced by the type of flowers that they feed on. Garden flowers give a clear liquid honey, while the much prized heather honey has a jelly-like texture. Sadly for mankind, bees are under threat due to intensive farming, urbanisation and a mite which spreads disease called Varroa. You can do something to support bees. Plant bee friendly flowers like lavender, honeysuckle, heather and thyme in your garden (see the British Bee Keepers Association website for a comprehensive guide). Try to avoid using chemicals in your garden, and if you’ve got a local bee keeper, buy their produce. This week’s recipe features honey and champagne in a light refreshing jelly dessert. It will last in the fridge for a few days – that’s if you can resist it for so long… Champagne & honey jelly with summer berries Ingredients (serves 6) 500ml Champagne or Prosecco 100ml honey 4 sheets of gelatine Summer berries to decorate
Method Place the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water for 5 minutes until soft. Squeeze the leaves and discard the water. Pour water into a medium sized pan of water and bring it to simmering point. Place a mixing bowl over the pan & pour in half of the the Champagne.
Add the gelatine and honey. Heat gently until the gelatine has dissolved. Remove from the heat & pour in the remaining Champagne. Stir and pour the mixture into a jug. Pour the jelly evenly across 6 glasses and refrigerate until set. Finish with a sprinkling of your choice of summer berries.
Why Bristol is the larder of England | Lido’s executive chef, Freddy Bird gives us the low-down on Bristol’s dining scene… by emma cullen If you’ve been to Bristol before then you’ve hopefully had the pleasure of dining at the Lido. You’ll know the name Freddy Bird – executive chef and culinary genius. We are pleased to have Bird introducing this year’s Bristol guide and here’s what he has to say about the amazing city of Bristol (and he has a few recommendations up his sleeve). “Once a slightly provincial culinary backwater, Bristol and the South West have developed an incredibly vibrant and innovative food scene over the past few years. Surrounded on all sides by the most fantastic produce and producers, Bristol could truly be considered the larder of England. “Countless smallholders grow and rear the very best produce to supply the city’s many great butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers. Wonderful and worthy initiatives like The Severn Project mean that we can grow in the city, with urban farms supplying some of our finest restaurants with salad, vegetables and honey. For those wanting to

pick their own wild food, there’s plenty of opportunity for foraging, too. I can pick porcini and hedgehog
mushrooms just a few minutes’ walk from my house, while short drives into the countryside reward me with
wild herbs, salads and spinach. “Being so perfectly placed for such a wealth of fantastic producers, it’s no wonder Bristol isn’t a huge fan of the supermarket, and I hope we can keep it that way. We’ve got a fabulous array of independent food shops, particularly on Gloucester Road and Henleaze Road – traders like Hart’s Bakery, Buxton Butchers and The Fish Shop are perfect examples of what Bristol’s food scene is all about. Our markets need to continue to thrive and to become a viable shopping option for everyone; farmers’ markets offer a much-needed service but can be out of reach of the pockets of so many. We, as a country and a county, need real food markets where food is sold at its true cost. “Events like Bristol Food Connections festival, which launched last year, help to promote all-important discussions in the community about different food cultures, production of food and waste, as well as teaching people how to cook. I firmly believe that children need to be educated in the fundamentals of cooking and
shopping for food early on. “Bristol is about great food and great chefs – and that’s not just in our excellent fine dining establishments. I feel that much of the excitement and buzz of the food scene lies in casual dining options, from great burgers and beers at the likes of Three Brothers Burgers in the heart of the ‘Beermuda Triangle’ to pizzas at Prego. For incredible atmosphere and great small plates and tapas, look to Bravas or Bell’s Diner, and for classic dining head to The Glassboat. Of course I have to mention the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere and wood-fired cooking at the Lido, where I’ve been head chef since 2008. All of these options represent great value, fabulous ingredients and first-class cooking, perfect for even the most discerning foodie.” Read the latest review of the Lido or discover brand new Bristol Food & Drink Guide online. If you’re like me and prefer a hard copy you’ll see this free-to-pick-up guide around Bristol in the next few weeks or at: www.foodanddrinkguides.co.uk

| “The Impulse to travel is one of the hopeful symptoms of life.” – Agnes Repplier by jodi seale Sometimes I feel like a tourist in my own city and I’m not even kidding! History would be disgraced by my lack of exploration in life as a 20-something kaapie… but alas I shall tick my way through the long list of unseen, untrodden and unique foreign places our Mother City has to offer. Here are a few that you may want to check out yourself. Abseil in Africa The flat-top landmark, Table Mountain boasts the highest commercial abseil in the world. Already taken the scenic cable car trip? Well, under the secure supervision of abseil professionals, you can simply step off the mountain, 1000m above sea level, and abseil down the peak with the Atlantic Ocean beneath your feet. And if you still have a hearty appetite after that, why not grab a hot pie, fresh sandwich, coffee, tea or cold beverage at the Table Mountain Kiosk next to the ticket office at the Lower Cable Station. The Table Mountain Café also has a great variety of tasty self-service meals and snacks, dishes inspired by SA cuisine, salads end even pizza slices; not to mention decadent pastries and desserts. Haas Collective Head on over to the Haas
Collective for your fix of creative design: paintings, photography, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, interior, curiosity and cushions by contributing and exhibiting artists. Receiving much local acclaim, the Haas Coffee Collective forms part of the quirky boutique-gallery space of the Haas Design Collective, for specialising in rare and exotic coffees. Therefore with a name like death wish (the strongest coffee on earth) we can see why. Not in the mood for a skop-skiet-and-dorner drink? You could opt for a pick from a list of pure, hand-blended teas such as honeybush haas blend and gunpowder green tea that is served in Japanese metal pots. Bo Kaap In a hurry? Why not grab ‘n bakkie local spicy Malay curry with an assortment of traditional side dishes from local vendors and sidewalk cafes; or sign up for the Bo Kaap Cooking Tour which takes you on a Cape Malay journey into the life, food and culture of the origin. You’ll be folding samoosas and mixing masala like a real Cape Malay Auntie in no time! 1… 2… 3… Bloukrans Bungee! Jump from the world’s highest bungee. At 216m, Bloukrans boasts majestic and serene surroundings of
the Bloukrans River valley located near Nature’s Valley. Although, there’s nothing peaceful about willingly propelling yourself more than 200 metres off a bridge attached to nothing but a rope. But hey, whatever floats your boat ey bru? Birds of a feather Why not get a bird’s eye view (of an Ostrich that is) at the Cango Ostrich Show Farm which is located in the lush Cango Valley, Schoemanshoek, 14km outside of Oudshoorn (on the main route towards the world famous Cango Caves). The Cango Ostrich Show Farm environment is visitor and disabled friendly with shaded areas for those that want to cool off. Experience exciting guided tours; touch, feel, sit on; or if you’re brave enough hold onto your tail feathers and ride this big feathery fowl. Kasi (Township) Life Step out of the suburbs and into a stream of vibrant loxion culture where you’ll meet and interact with upbeat communities of a people who have been part of a homegrown revolution baring witness to a rural modification that is now an attractive urban landscape. of emerging innovative businesses; community centres; B&B’s and eateries like the legendary grill, Mzoli’s: Walk into the butcher, take your pick of meat and let the grill masters prepare lunch. Expect platters of succulent and saucy braai at its best. Buy your refreshments from the nearby shebeen (smokkie huis) and park off on the streets where the party never stops. Neighbourgoods Market An independent enterprise and award-winning market showcases over 100 speciality sellers every Saturday. This social hub sets a platform for resident farmers, finefood sources, organic merchants, bakers and brokers, grocers, mongers, butchers, artisan makers, celebrity local chefs, and micro ventures. This bustling market is held in an old sky-lit brick warehouse and courtyard at the Old Biscuit Mill in the industrial neighbourhood of Woodstock, Cape Town and there’s one in JHB; offering a diversity in community and character charm. Here is where locals, tourists and traders come together to share concepts and experiences and enjoy the variety the many stalls have to offer. Don’t be shy to ask and get informed about what you’re buying to munch on or drink, the vendors will equip
you with what you need to know. Throughout the year you can expect Neighbourgoods Market to host an array of seasonal events, specialty festivals, and live music performances. High net worth individuals able to settle quicker in the UK | If you are a high net worth individual looking to settle in the UK, the Tier 1 Investor route might be the best option
Do it with us, and benefit all the way
By breytenbasch One of the most popular immigration routes worldwide for high net worth individuals is the Tier 1 Investor route. This immigration route was designed by the UK Government especially for investors who want to settle in the United Kingdom. Although this very advantageous immigration route is unfortunately not within the grasp of most, there are those fortunate enough to qualify. This immigration category has many advantages for the successful applicant. There is no English language requirement, as it is not expected that the investor would need to work whilst in the UK. Though, the visa does allow the investor to work, within certain restrictions. There is no additional maintenance requirement, as required in many other immigration routes, as the invested amount should be suffice for the investor to not have to rely on public funds. The investor enjoys good flexibility in terms of settlement, as he/she can be outside the UK for 180 days in any 12 month period, without it affecting the settlement eligibility. Major investors are able to qualify quicker for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and if an investor has invested money of their own under their control in the UK amounting to at least £10 million, they can apply for ILR after only two years. Those who have invested money under their control amounting to at least £5 million can qualify for ILR after three years. (Strict rules in this regard apply.)

first hike rates; the potential of this threatens downside pressure for the Pound in May which will likely have an effect on other currencies including the Rand. What to look out for this week? Possible factors that may affect the Rand this week could be the release of the USD Fed Interest Rate decision and the Euro Consumer Price Index.

Market Yourself Present your skills as effectively as possible, in the right places, by registering with career sites such as careersinafrica.com and maintaining social media profiles. Ensure your records are kept up to date, as recruitment consultants and employers can only offer you the type of roles your profile appears to match. Expect to Engage Thanks to social media and company career websites, you have more opportunities than ever to find out about prospective employers and to engage them directly. You can research their brand, what they offer, how they communicate, what their leaders are talking about. You can even engage their team in discussions around posted content. In this environment, consider the best way to appear credible and to
stand out. You have to research, appear professional and know what you are talking about, because while technology gives you the chance to find out more, it also means you’re expected to take that opportunity, because your competition will. Be Discerning Given that you can now see beneath the surface of an employer or a recruitment agent, you can ensure they are what you are looking for before beginning the process. Time is precious. Your career is precious. Why would you spend either with the wrong employer, or working with the wrong recruiter? Be Dedicated In a competitive talent market, you have to show dedication to get the role you deserve. Whether it’s in researching and applying for sufficient roles to find the right one, or in completing follow-ups, application forms and interview preparations to the best of your ability, dedication will help you stand out. Even in social media interactions, taking to time to personalise approaches or to respond to job posts in a way that shows you care will help you be successful. Did you send a cover letter when you last applied for a job? If not, consider whether that decision makes your success more or less likely. Expect Discernment, Dedication and Engagement from your Recruiter There is a world of recruiters out there and many, many good ones. When selecting the recruiters who will support you in finding your next role, apply the highest standards. Expect from them everything you expect from yourself, and don’t spend your time with those who fall short of your standards. Move on, there are better out there, and whatever you do, don’t work with recruiters who charge money. Proper recruiters charge your future employer for your brilliant skills, they don’t charge you. 13th Careers in Africa Recruitment Summit, London, 15 – 17 May 2015 Apply online at careersinafrica.com by 4 May 2015

SA decathlon athlete needs own poles to compete
| Fredriech Pretorius may rightfully wonder what would have happened at the Combined Events Meeting in Mauritius if he had his own set of poles to use during the pole vault by hpc Unfortunately Pretorius does not have any poles of his own and had to borrow poles. The biggest pole he was able to borrow was smaller than the pole with which he started a few years ago when he decided to become a decathlete. Pretorius compared the pole he used to a “pool noodle”.
“I started jumping 3.70m but every time I planted the pole in the box I ended up falling as the pole could not get me airborne.” Consequently he was not able to clear any height in the pole vault on Sunday. To add to his frustrations he also sustained a foot-injury during the pole vault and had to withdraw from the 1500m event. At this stage it is not sure whether Pretorius will be able to compete at the South African National Championships in Stellenbosch this coming weekend. In spite of his setbacks, the High Performance Centre (hpc) sponsored athlete did not do too badly. In four of the nine events in which he competed he scored more than 800 points. A definite highlight was being able to clear the bar at a height of 2.01m (813 points) in the high
jump, which was a personal best for him. His time of 11.05s (850 points) in the 100m is the second best of his career so far. His time of 14.61s in the 110-hurdles was worth 897 points and he earned 822 points with his time of 49.84s in the 400m. A definite disappointment was his jump of only 6.89m (788 points) in the long jump. The long jump is where he usually makes up points. He was also not at his best in the throwing events and could only manage to throw 11.92m in the shot put, 40.97m in the discus and 54.12m in the javelin. Irma Reyneke, his coach, is not too worried about what has happened. “Naturally, being his coach, I share his frustrations and disappointments but I am confident that he will be able to put this setback behind him and come back an emotionally stronger athlete. Unfortunately losing is part of becoming a champion. “My main concern is the fact that Fredriech does not have his own set of poles for the pole vault. When he competes internationally, he always has to ask around if there are any poles he can use. This situation puts additional pressure on Fredriech. Every time he borrows some other athlete’s pole he runs the risk that it could break, which could affect the outcome for both Fredriech and the other athlete. Hopefully we will be able to solve the problem before the Word Student Games.”
