Sara’s chief of staff freed from detention
The chief of staff of Vice President Sara Duterte was released Saturday after spending 10 days in detention after being cited in contempt by the House committee on good government and public accountability.
Zuleika Lopez’s release was granted after she pledged to attend all future hearings related to the ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds allocated to the OVP and the Department of Education under Vice President Sara Duterte. Lopez was supposed to be transferred to the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City but was confined instead at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City, where she received the release order.

OMBUDSMAN Samuel Martires
said there are no valid grounds yet to investigate
Vice President Sara Duterte as he rejected suggestions that his office can do the probe given the President’s position against any impeachment moves.
“As far as we are concerned right now, we have not seen any acts of the Vice President that we should investigate. We do not find anything that was in violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act or of any offenses in the Revised Penal Code that is in relation to the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act,” Martires said in an interview with GMA News.
He said the threats uttered by Duterte against Mr. Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez were done “as an ordinary citizen, not as Vice President in relation to her office or to the function of her office.”
He also chastised Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres for saying the Ombudsman has the authority to discipline and investigate officials in the context of Duterte’s remarks.
“I would advise Usec. Andres to shut up, to stop talking about the case. Because one of the powers of the Ombudsman is to take over the investigation of a case of any government investigative agency at any stage of the proceedings,” Martires said.
“No one can dictate upon us, not even the President of the Philippines. Don’t ever try to lecture us on what are the functions, duties and responsibilities of the Ombudsman,” he said.
Martires said proper law enforcement agencies should be the ones to investigate Duterte’s actions and utterances.
“So the DOJ (Department of Justice) and NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) should investigate this, and if
and sleeping mats from the Office of the President.
“The biggest need right now is for the houses to be rebuilt. I promised one of the victims at the evacuation center that if you cannot go home by Christmas, I will come here and we will spend Christmas together,” the President said. He then prodded Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna to prioritize rebuilding the shanties that were razed to the ground. Speaking at Rosauro Almario Elementary School where many displaced families were temporarily staying, Mr. Marcos highlighted the government’s efforts to address the victims’ immediate needs, including the distribution of food packs designed to sustain a family for several days.
“You have food packs that should last three to four days. But
the CIDG (Criminal Investigation and Detection Group) wants to help the NBI investigate, they can do so,” he said.
Martires was appointed by former President Rod rigo Duterte to the Supreme Court as associate justice in 2017 and as Ombudsman in 2018, but he denied his views on the issue were influenced by this.
“I’m not close to the President (Duterte). During the six-year term of the President, you can check the logbook of Malacanang how many times I have been there,” he said.
On Friday, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Mar cos Jr. left the door open to a possible reconciliation with Duterte as he confirmed sending a private mes sage to lawmakers in the House of Representa tives urging them not to file an impeach ment case against her.
“What will happen if somebody files an impeachment? It will tie down the House, it will tie down the Senate. It will just take up all our time and for what? For nothing, for nothing. None of this will help improve a single Filipino life,” he said.
The commander-in-chief de scribed the ongoing tension between him and his running mate in the 2022 polls as a “storm in a teacup” – an idi omatic expression for great outrage or excitement about a trivial matter.
Duterte earlier she and the Pres ident already reached a “point of no return.”
President Mar cos, however, held a different view.
“Never say never,” he said.
PBBM: EMBODY BONIFACIO, FREE PH FROM ‘ILLS OF SOCIETY’
PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. encouraged Filipinos to embody the patriotism and selflessness of Andrés Bonifacio by helping liberate the Philippines from the “ills of society” as the nation marked the revolutionary hero’s 161st birth anniversary yesterday.
“Today, we honor the life and heroism of the Supremo of the Katipunan and Hero of the Masses who organized and inspired his fellow Filipinos to rise against tyranny and break the chains of oppression,” Mr. Marcos said.
“Let us honor his memory by finding a deeper meaning in his sacrifice and doing our part in liberating our country from the shackles of hunger, corrup-
tion, criminality, and other ills of society,” he added. The President also called for renewed patriotism and discipline to build a “Bagong Pilipinas,” where peace, progress, and harmony prevail.
“As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, let us remember the legacy of sacrifice that he and our forebears have demonstrated. With patriotism, discipline, and love for one another as our guide, let us build a better Bagong Pilipinas,” he said.
Vice President Sara Duterte, for her part, said: “It is important that our celebration of the greatness of Andres Bonifacio opens our eyes to the conditions of our country. This is also one of the
things that inspired us to struggle and become loyal and true Filipino citizens.”
“Let us spread the message of Bonifacio’s heroism amongst each other and hopefully it lights the fire within us to become more resilient, brave, and determined,” Duterte said.
Speaker Martin Romualdez said the values embodied by Bonifacio – integrity, unity, and accountability – are essential in building a stronger and more resilient nation.
“Bonifacio stood against tyranny and division, championing the ideals of freedom, justice, and the welfare of the Filipino people above all else,” he added. Charles Dantes, Rachelle Tonelada and Maricel Cruz

GATCHALIAN
HAILS S&P’S BBB+ CREDIT RATING FOR PH
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian applauded Standard & Poor’s recent affirmation of the Philippines’ investment grade rating of BBB+ and the upgrade of the outlook from “stable” to “positive.”
Partido Manggagawa (PM) secretary general Judy Miranda said: “If Bonifacio were alive today, he would lead the Katipunan in a fight to end political dynasties as a pathway for true independence and real development.” Miranda pointed to a stark contrast between the inaction of the House of Representatives on the P150 wage hike bill and its fixation on Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war and Sara Duterte’s confidential funds.
The nationwide commemoration of Bonifacio Day by the PM and Nagkaisa raised the call for ending endo jobs, low wages, and political dynasties.
“Of course, we want Digong to be held accountable for the murder of alleged drug users and Inday Sara for her plunder of people’s money. But we know that Congress is motivated by factional infighting not good governance. And that is why Congress is ‘deadma’ to proposed reforms favora-
The Philippine National Police (PNP) meanwhile claimed that several of its officers suffered injuries after protesters commemorating the 161st birth anniversary of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio, who marched along CM Recto Avenue in Manila, breached their barricade.
In a statement, the PNP said
According to initial reports, the PNP said that one police officer deployed to the area sustained an eye injury and was promptly rushed to a hospital in Manila for medical treatment.
The PNP said that the incident underscores the delicate balance the police force strives to uphold between protecting the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly and ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
“Their mission is always clear: to de-escalate tensions, preserve peace, and protect lives,” it added.
OUR LADY OF EDSA RECTOR CONCERNED OVER ‘POLITICAL’ USE OF SHRINE
By Charles Dantes
The rector of the Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of EDSA (EDSA Shrine) expressed concern about efforts to exploit the “People Power legacy” to garner support for political gain.
Rev. Fr. Jerome Secillano, in an interview on the Facts First podcast, criticized those who now embrace the EDSA spirit but once rejected it.
“They once dismissed EDSA as a political tool of the ‘dilawan’ and ‘pink’ camps. Now, they’re suddenly waving the unity flag, even
using the EDSA Shrine for political ceremonies,” Secillano said. His remarks followed a gathering of Duterte family supporters at the EDSA Shrine, where they expressed their backing for former President Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.
“How can you talk to someone whose sense of history is distorted?” Secillano said, addressing critics who have accused him of partisanship. “They troll me on social media, questioning my integrity as a priest. But isn’t it obvious that the poor are being exploited here?”. The priest also weighed in on
the lingering controversies surrounding both Duterte and Marcos.
“There are ongoing allegations— from the Duterte era’s drug war to questions about President Marcos’ governance and corruption issues,”he said.
“Yet these claims are often weaponized, not to seek justice, but to undermine and destabilize,” he added.
Secillano pointed to the populist strategies both administrations have employed, particularly in their engagement with the public.
“Under Duterte, we saw how strongman tactics appealed to the masses. Now, with Marcos, the focus
has shifted to performative unity and distributing aid, which some see as political patronage,” he said.
The priest also condemned the role of troll farms, which have flourished during both administrations.
“The online narrative is controlled by those with resources, spreading lies and manipulating public perception. It happened during Duterte’s time, and it’s continuing now,” the priest said.
“I am not defending either side, both Duterte and Marcos have their flaws. The real victims remain the ordinary Filipinos, caught in the crossfire of political games.”
PHLPOST UNVEILS WORLD’S LONGEST XMAS STAMP SHOWING HISTORICAL CHURCHES ALONG PASIG RIVER
THE Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) on Friday unveiled its special 2024 Christmas Stamp, aimed at highlighting the cultural and historical churches along the Pasig River.
Measuring 234mm in length and 40mm in width, the stamp claimed the title of the world’s longest usable postage stamp.
PHLPost Postmaster General Luis Carlos explained that the stamp, titled “Simbang Gabi sa Ilog Pasig” (Christmas Dawn Masses along Pasig River), is a creative work by Gelo Andres, developed in partnership with Renacimiento Manila.
Renacimiento is a group of artists, creators, and history enthusiasts. It features unique embellishments, including blue iridescent ink on the river and suprametal-multilevel em-
bossing depicting the churches.
“Ito ay nagpapakita ng mga simbahan na dindayo ng mga Pilipino kapag Pasko para sa simbang gabi, mula sa Binondo hanggang sa Antipolo na malayo na, na dinadaluyan ng Pasig River (This shows the churches along Pasig River starting from Binondo to as far as Antipolo. Filipinos go to these churches for the Christmas dawn Masses),” Carlos said during the launch.
The Catholic churches highlighted on the stamp are Binondo, Quiapo, Manila Cathedral, Sta. Ana, San Felipe Neri, San Pedro Macati, Guadalupe, Pasig and Antipolo.
The Pasig River is historically significant, having served as an important waterway before and during the Spanish colonial era.
This, he said, reflects the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and economic growth.
The credit rating agency cited several factors for the outlook upgrade, including effective policymaking, fiscal reforms, and the country’s above-average growth potential.
Gatchalian noted that the recent enactment of Republic Act 12066, also known as the CREATE MORE Act, is expected to attract more investments by enhancing the global competitiveness of the country’s tax incentives.
Gatchalian is the author and sponsor of the CREATE MORE Act. Additionally, the senator reiterated his commitment to support the Marcos administration’s economic agenda as the Senate and the House of Representatives reconcile provisions during the deliberations of the Bicameral Conference Committee on the proposed General Appropriations Bill, which allocates a national budget of P6.352 trillion for the next year. MMDA ADVISES PUBLIC TO AVOID YULETIDE WEEKEND SHOPPING
THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is encouraging motorists to avoid shopping on weekends due to anticipated heavy traffic on major thoroughfares starting December 13, coinciding with payday Friday.
The agency stated that the flow of traffic is expected to be congested as people would be shopping with their salaries and Christmas bonuses already received, adding that traffic typically gets heavier between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The MMDA predicts a 20 percent increase in traffic volume during the holiday rush, attributed to an influx of people and vehicles from areas such as Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, and Central Luzon.
In the previous year, about 409,000 vehicles were recorded passing through Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, which is home to at least 29 shopping malls.
MMDA chairman Don Artes has encouraged motorists to consider early shopping to mitigate the impact of Christmas traffic due to the anticipated rise in vehicular volume. Joel E. Zurbano

3 MORE CHINESE VESSELS SEEN IN WPS
By Rex Espiritu
THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Saturday that three Chinese research vessels had been observed off the coasts of Luzon and Mindanao provinces.
The vessels twice entered the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), including waters near Siargao, a renowned world-class surfing destination.
At a news forum in Quezon City, PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela said the Coast Guard first monitored the three vessels at a distance of 257 nautical miles northeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan on November 17, 2024.
Tarriela said the vessels were observed twice within the country’s 200 nautical mile EEZ—first near Davao Oriental on November 14, and again off Siargao Island on November 20.
“Basically dumaan lang siya talaga. It never loitered. Pumasok siya lumiko ulit (Basically they just passed. It never loitered. They entered and made a turn),” Tarriela said.
As of 7:40 a.m. on November 30, Tarriela said the ships were seen “with the distance of 210 nautical miles east of Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte.”
The three Chinese research vessels are Xiang Yang Hong 3, Jia Geng, and Xiang Yang Hong 10.
However, the PCG official said that since the vessels entered the Philippine EEZ, they should have sought clearance from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
“Since wala this can be… we’re going to communicate this to the National Task force WPS and it’s up to the DFA to take action,” he said.
In the same forum, Tarriela said the Philippines remains concerned over the presence of Chinese maritime militias near the Pag-asa Island in the western part

of the country following reports of swarming earlier this week.
More than 80 Chinese vessels were monitored in Pag-asa Island’s territorial sea on Nov. 27 but Tarriela said it might have been due to bad weather.
“This has always been a concern
for the Philippine government. We are explaining the phenomenon, bakit tumaas at bakit bumaba (why it increased and why the number went down),” he said.
“But every time na pumapasok din naman sila sa territorial sea natin sa (But every time they enter

PHILIPPINE CANDIDATE WINS MISS UNIVERSE 2024 ‘NATIONAL COSTUME AWARD’
MISS Philippines Chelsea Manalo won the National Costume Award at Miss Universe 2024.
The international pageant announced the news on Saturday, sharing a video compilation of the award’s Top 3.
Manalo was followed by Chile’s Emilia Dides in 2nd place and Vietnam’s Ky Duyên Nguyen in 3rd place. Chelsea’s national costume paid homage to the Philippines’ religions.
Manalo showcased a national costume celebrating the country’s religious diver -
sity during Miss Universe 2024 preliminary competition held today at Arena CDMX in Mexico City.
The costume paid tribute to both Muslim and Christian traditions, incorporating traditional fabrics and symbols, including an image of Our Lady of Antipolo and Mindanao-inspired details.
The gown, designed by Manny Halasan, highlighted traditional Filipino craftsmanship while celebrating the Tagalog concept of hiraya, meaning the power of imagination and aspiration. Crafted with Inaul fabric from Sultan
Kudarat, the dress displayed intricate gold patterns, jewels, and traditional Tongkaling bells, reflecting the cultural heritage and spiritual symbols cherished by Filipino Muslims.
In a nod to her Christian roots, the gown’s back panel featured an exquisite image of Our Lady of Antipolo, also known as Our Lady of Good Voyage, adorned with gold and jewels. The design was complemented by a unique headpiece inspired by a galleon ship from the historic Galleon Trade, symbolizing resilience and the Filipino spirit of explo -
ration and unity across different cultures and faiths.
Manalo, a native of Bulacan, also incorporated elements from her hometown. The gown was embellished with puni decorations crafted from coconut fronds, a hallmark of traditional Bulacan artisanship. She completed the look with a pair of blue and gold fans adorned with delicate pearls, embodying both elegance and cultural depth.
Last year, the Philippines, represented by Michelle Dee, also won the Best National Costume award.
OIL FIRMS SET TO INCREASE GAS PRICES; DIESEL, KEROSENE ROLLBACK SEEN
OIL companies are set to increase gasoline prices, but price cuts on diesel and kerosene are expected next week.
The Department of Energy (DOE) also said motorists should brace for
the said increases.
The DOE said the following price adjustments on oil products are projected next week: gasoline - P0.70 to P0.90 per liter increase; diesel - P0.20 to P0.40 per liter decrease; and keroseneP0.20 to P0.40 per liter decrease.
The DOE explained that a global oversupply of fuel is expected in the first quarter of 2025, along with a low demand.
For the rest of 2024, the DOE said oil prices are likely to decrease due to lower overall demand.
Petron meanwhile announced that for LPG, it will increase prices by P1.20/kg on Sunday, December 1, 2024. LPG firm Regasco earlier said it is also imposing an additional P0.50/kg.
On November 26, oil firms raised pump prices by as much as P1.15 per liter to reflect the movement of prices in the world oil market.
Seaoil Philippines, Chevron Philippines, Jetti Petroleum, PetroGazz, and PTT Philippines issued separate advisories of the latest oil price hike of P1.15 per liter for gasoline, P1.10 per liter for diesel, and kerosene by P0.80 per liter.
The other oil companies are expected to follow suit, Department of Energy Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) Director Rodela Romero said last week’s oil prices went up due to worsening geopolitical tensions.
“These adjustments are attributed to the following, escalating geopolitical situation around Russia continued to dominate sentiment, underpinning the week’s gains, Russia’s oil refinery business is at risk of plant closure amid heavy losses, lower production, and news of oil production outage in Norway,” Romero said.

BINAY APPEALS TO PNP: DEPLOY MORE COPS TO MAKATI CITY
SENATOR Nancy Binay has appealed to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Marbil to expedite the augmentation of police units in order to address the rising crime rate in Makati City. Binay urged police officials to allocate more personnel to the country’s financial capital, citing alarming reports of criminal activities such as robbery, theft, drugrelated offenses, and other petty crimes. Residents have repeatedly expressed concerns about the increasing crime rate in the city. This month, police apprehended two suspects accused of robbing two Japanese nationals in Salcedo Village.
The call for police augmentation underscores the urgent need to strengthen Makati’s police force and preserve its reputation as a safe and vibrant urban center. Currently, Makati has only 512 police personnel, serving a daytime population of 4,200,000 and a nighttime population of 280,150. The police-to-population ratio is approximately one officer for every 17,004 residents during the day and one officer for every 1,134 residents at night. Joel E. Zurbano
CIDG AGENTS SEIZE SMUGGLED CIGARETTES IN ZAMBOANGA RAID
OPERATIVES of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) have seized at least P28.9 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from a facility in Zamboanga City during a two-day operation. In a statement on Saturday, CIDG Acting Director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the operation was conducted in Barangay Patalon, Zamboanga City from 11:20 p.m. on Nov. 27 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 28 by CIDG-Zamboanga City, in coordination with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and other law enforcement agencies, under BIR Mission Order 00060479. Torre said 506 cases of cigarettes of assorted brands, worth P28,993,800, without internal revenue stamps, were confiscated from the facility.
The seized items were taken into custody by the BIR for documentation and filing of a case against the owner of the facility for violating the National Internal Revenue Code.
“The CIDG assures the public of its unwavering commitment to enforcing anti-criminality campaigns and putting a stop to illegal and criminal activities,” Torre said. MANILA RESIDENTS TO START GETTING CHRISTMAS GIFTS ON DEC 1 MANILA residents will start receiving their Christmas gifts on the first day of December, as the country’s capital city kicks off its annual “12 Days of Christmas” on Sunday.
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna said they will give away 650,000 boxes of noche buena food items to poor households until Dec. 12.
“On the first day December, we will be starting our 12 Days of Christmas as a gift to families in Manila. “There is a donations drop-off center at the Kartilya ng Katipunan where charitable individuals, families, groups, companies, and institutions can share relief goods and gifts for calamity victims. Donations are accepted there Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,”the mayor added.
US APPROVES $385M ARMS SALES TO TAIWAN
THE United States has approved the proposed sale of spare parts for fighter jets and radar systems as well as communications equipment to Taiwan, in deals valued at $385 million, a US agency said.
While Washington does not have official diplomatic relations with Taipei, it remains the island’s most important backer and biggest arms supplier.
The proposed sale of the F-16 and radar system parts consists of equipment in existing US military stocks and was worth an estimated $320 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement, with deliveries estimated to start in 2025.
“This proposed sale serves US national, economic and security interests by supporting the recipient’s continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability,” the DSCA said.
“The proposed sale will improve the recipient’s
ability to meet current and future threats by maintaining the operational readiness of the recipient’s fleet of F-16 aircraft.”
A separate sale involving follow-on support and equipment for a tactical communications system was worth $65 million, the DSCA said.
The deals were approved by the State Department, with the DSCA providing the required notification to Congress on Friday.
China insists self-ruled Taiwan is part of its territory and has long opposed US arms sales to the island.
The sales were announced as Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te was due to leave on Saturday for a trip to three Pacific island allies, with stopovers in Hawaii and the US territory of Guam.
Taiwan’s defense ministry on Saturday “expressed gratitude” for the latest arms sales.
The items “will help maintain the combat readiness of the Air Force’s F-16 aircraft equipment and bolster our air defense,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Taiwan and the United States will continue to consolidate our security partnership.”
The foreign ministry said it was the 18th time that President Joe Biden’s administration had announced arms sales to the island.
Taiwan was determined to strengthen its defenses in the face of China’s military pressure and “grey zone harassment,” it said in a statement, referring to tactics that fall short of an act of war.
China has ramped up military pressure on Taiwan in recent years with near-daily deployments of fighter jets and warships around the island.
On Saturday, Taiwan’s defense ministry said 18 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels as well as two balloons were detected in the 24 hours to 6:00 am (2200 GMT Friday). AFP
ZELENSKY: NATO GUARANTEES CAN END ‘HOT STAGE’ OF WAR
UKRAINIAN President Volodymyr Zelensky called Friday for NATO to offer guaranteed protections to parts of Ukraine controlled by Kyiv in order to “stop the hot stage of the war.”
Zelensky also implied he would be willing to wait to regain the almost one-fifth of his country that Russia’s army has seized, if such a deal could offer security for the rest of Ukraine and end the fighting.
The comments came amidst escalating tensions in the near threeyear war.
Russia has this week threatened to strike government buildings in Kyiv
and launched a massive aerial attack on Ukraine’s energy sector — something it called a response to Ukraine firing US and British supplied missiles on Russian territory.
“If we want to stop the hot stage of the war, we should take under the NATO umbrella the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control,” Zelensky told Britain’s Sky News, according to a voiceover translation of his remarks from Ukrainian into English.
“That’s what we need to do fast, and then Ukraine can get back the other part of its territory diplomatically,” he added.
Talk of a possible ceasefire or peace deal has ratched up since Donald Trump won the US presidential election earlier this month.
The Republican has criticised US aid to Kyiv and claimed he could halt the conflict within hours, without saying how.
Russia controls around 18 percent of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory, including the Crimean peninsula which Moscow annexed in 2014.
Since invading in 2022, Moscow has claimed four more eastern and southern regions of Ukraine — Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhia
— as its own, despite not having full control over them.
Kyiv has repeatedly ruled out ceding territory in exchange for peace, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded Ukraine’s army withdraw from swathes of more land.
Zelensky insisted any offer to join NATO must be given to the whole of Ukraine, but his comments about the “NATO umbrella” suggest he might accept the alliance’s practical protections, like the Article Five collective defense clause, only be extended to territory controlled by Kyiv. AFP

ALARM OVER HIGH HIV RATE AMONG YOUNG WOMEN
THE UN’s children’s fund raised the alarm on Friday over the high rate of new HIV infections among young women and girls, warning they lacked access to prevention and treatment.
In a report ahead of world AIDS day on Saturday, UNICEF said that 96,000 girls and 41,000 boys aged 15-19 were newly infected with HIV in 2023, meaning seven out of 10 new adolescent infections were among girls.
In sub-Saharan Africa, nine out of 10 new HIV infections among 15-19 yearolds were among girls in the most recent period for which data is available.
“Children and adolescents are not fully reaping the benefits of scaled up access to treatment and prevention services,” said UNICEF associate director of HIV/ AIDS Anurita Bains.
“Yet children living with HIV must be prioritized when it comes to investing resources and efforts to scale up treatment for all, this includes the expansion of innovative testing technologies.”
As many as 77 percent of adults living with HIV have access to antiretroviral therapy, but just 57 percent of children 14 and younger, and 65 percent of teenagers aged 15-19, can obtain life saving medicine.
Children 14 and younger account for only three percent of those living with HIV, but accounted for 12 per cent — 76,000 — of AIDS-related deaths in 2023. AFP
SRI LANKA LOGS HIGHEST DEFLATION SINCE 1961
SRI LANKA’S consumer prices fell by 2.1 percent in November, the highest deflation rate recorded by the economically fragile island nation since 1961, official data showed Saturday.
An unprecedented financial crash in 2022 brought months of consumer goods shortages, with inflation peaking at nearly 70 percent that year. Since then, a $2.9 billion bailout loan from the International Monetary Fund, tax hikes, and other austerity measures have slowly made headway in repairing the island’s economy.
“Headline inflation will remain negative in the next few months, deeper than previously projected, mainly due to larger downward adjustments in energy prices and reduction in volatile food prices,” Sri Lanka’s central bank said in a statement.
The bank said inflation was likely to return to its target level of five percent in the coming months. Sri Lanka had already seen deflation of 0.8 percent in October and 0.5 percent in September. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who was elected in September, has vowed to maintain the IMF bailout program negotiated by his predecessor that includes higher taxes and cuts to state spending. THAILAND FLOODS KILL 9, DISPLACE OVER 13,000
FLOODING driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents.
Local media footage showed residents wading through murky, chest-deep water and cars submerged in flooded streets.
“Flooding across eight provinces in southern Thailand has affected 553,921 households and claimed nine lives, prompting agencies to mobilize urgent assistance,” the country’s disaster agency said on its official Facebook page.
More than 13,000 people had been forced to flee their homes, with temporary shelters set up in schools and temples, it added. Nampa, a resident of coastal Songkhla province, told state broadcaster Thai PBS she was concerned about the dwindling food supplies.
“We are doing fine now, but I am not sure how long we can stay in this condition,” she said.
CRYPTO entrepreneur Justin Sun on Friday fulfilled a promise he made after spending $6.2 million on an artwork featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall – by eating the fruit.
At one of Hong Kong’s priciest hotels, Sun chomped down on a banana in front of dozens of journalists and influencers after giving a speech hailing the work as “iconic” and drew parallels between conceptual art and cryptocurrency.
“It’s much better than other bananas,” Sun said after getting his first taste.
“It’s really quite good.”
Titled “Comedian,” the conceptual work created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York
last week, with Sun among seven bidders. Sun said he felt “disbelief” in the first 10 seconds after he won the bid, before realizing “this could become something big.”
In the 10 seconds after that, he decided he would eat the banana.
“Eating it at a press conference can also become a part of the artwork’s history,” he said Friday. The debut of the edible creation at the 2019 Art Basel show in Miami Beach sparked controversy and raised questions about whether it should be considered art – Cattelan’s stated aim. And Sun on Friday compared conceptual art like “Comedian” to NFT art and decentralized blockchain technology. AFP
Two hospitals in nearby Pattani province suspended operations to prevent floodwaters from damaging medical facilities.
In neighboring north Malaysia, the rains have forced the evacuation of at least 80,000 people to temporary shelters this week, with disaster officials there saying at least four people have been killed. The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that “very heavy rain” could continue to affect some areas of the country’s south through next week.
The government has deployed rescue teams to assist affected residents and designated 50 million baht ($1.7 million) in flood relief for each province. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Friday on social media platform X that the goal was to “restore normalcy as quickly as possible.”

LOCAL HANDICRAFT MAKER ACHIEVES GLOBAL SUCCESS
LOCATED at the center of the business district in Pasig City, Alriver Export Corp. has been spreading holiday cheer worldwide through its intricate handcrafted angels and nativity sets.
What began as a small business making baskets in the 1980s has evolved into a globally-recognized brand known for its high-quality, artistic Christmas decorations.
FAMILY LEGACY
The eldest in a brood of four, Alessa De Rivera-SanJuan took over the family business following her father’s semi-retirement. Two of her siblings play vital roles in the daily operations, while her mother remains the heart and soul of the enterprise, driving its artistic vision with unwavering passion.
“My parents started the business in the 1980s with baskets, but as the market became saturated, a friend suggested we try making angels. That’s when everything changed,” De Rivera-SanJuan said.
By 1996, the company made the bold decision to focus on angels and“belens” (nativity sets), which quickly gained international recognition for their timeless designs and excellent craftsmanship. The company exports to markets across the US, Italy, Jordan, Vietnam, Ukraine and Malta, catering to a global demand for their unique, handcrafted pieces.
“We take great pride in our craftsmanship. Every angel starts
with a hand-painted face, then we carefully assemble the body using wire, foam, and paper. Each piece is meticulously crafted to have texture, movement, and elegance, which set us apart from mass-produced competitors,” De Rivera-San Juan said.
From its modest beginnings with only six employees, Alriver now employs over 70 skilled artisans.
The company also diversified its holiday collection as it ventures into holiday wreaths, Christmas tree decorations, Christmas lanterns and religious wall decors.
WORK OF ART
While her father Albert De Rivera put up the business, it is her mother’s creativity that breathes life into every piece of handcrafted products they make.
“The faces are the most important part of the process. They must convey emotion and capture the spirit of Christmas. After that, the fabrics and laces are draped in a way that enhances the movement and grace of each figure,” De RiveraSan Juan said.
Alriver sources materials locally, including sinamay from Bicol and fabrics from Divisoria, while collaborating with artisans in Rizal for metal
BOUNTY Fresh Chicken is taking holiday celebrations a notch higher with its Bounty Fresh No Antibiotics Ever (NAE) line, delivering premium quality and ensuring safer, healthier meals.
“At Bounty Fresh, we believe the holidays are all about celebrating love and family over meals that truly matter. Our chickens, raised with NAE represent our dedication to offering Filipino families safer, healthier, and more flavorful choices for memorable holiday feasts,” said Bounty Fresh Group Holdings Inc. CEO Kenneth Cheng.
Raised without antibiotics or steroids, Bounty Fresh Chicken NAE pushes Bounty Fresh Group Holdings, Inc.’s “Food Made Better” advocacy, prioritizing healthier, more
and resin parts.
“While we sell to international markets, we also want Filipinos to appreciate the art and quality that goes into each piece,” De Rivera-San Juan said.
To achieve this, the family participates in local trade events and bazaars such as the ongoing Designer Holiday Bazaar (DHB) at Glorietta Mall to engage with Filipino customers and share their passion for craftsmanship. The DHB will run until the 1st of December 2024, allowing shoppers an extended time to do their holiday decorations.
COMPETING GLOBALLY
Despite facing stiff competition from cheaper, mass-produced imports from China, Alriver remains committed to quality.
“We don’t compete on price; we focus on design and craftsmanship. If

THE Impact Pioneers Network, a pioneering angel investing network launched by Villgro Philippines and xchange, brought together local climate startups and investors during Philippine Startup Week 2024 to tackle environmental challenges through impact investing. The event strived to secure investments and partnerships to accelerate the growth of climate-focused solutions.
At the heart of the event was the Green Tank: Climate Innovation Challenge, a pitch showcase featuring startups focused on climate adaptation and resilience.
Notable participants included BillionBricks, Altilium Green Energy, Magwayen Organics Inc. (MAGWAI), Verta Bioenergy, and Lycan Motorcycles Inc.
These startups are addressing pressing environmental issues, particularly as the Philippines remains one of the most disaster-prone countries due to extreme natural events such as typhoons and droughts.
“Now is the opportune time to accelerate climate action. But we need to urgently support climate enterprises to scale their solutions. Impact investing enables market-driven and entrepreneurial innovation through incubation and strategic investments, helping them come up with solutions fit for the country’s needs and challenges, and secure a brighter future for generations,” said Villgro Philippines co-founder and CEO Priya Thachadi.
The event highlighted the critical need for climate-focused enterprises that balance innovation with sustainability.

artistry in every product we make,” De Rivera-SanJuan said.
One of the company’s biggest challenges today is finding skilled workers to maintain their high standards. Handicrafts demand a rare combination of skills and passion, making it challenging to find dedicated artisans. The company trains aspiring artists but only those who share their deep love for the craft remain with the business.
The family also takes pride in the long-term relationships they have built with their employees, many of whom have been with the company for years.
“Growing up, I worked alongside the same people who now help run the company. They were my ‘ate’ and ‘kuya’ before but they became part of the family. I can confidently say, they are the reason for our success,” De Rivera-SanJuan said.
FILIPINO CRAFT
Looking ahead, Alriver Export Corp. is focused on expanding its product line. This year, the company experimented with Filipino-themed holiday decorations, which they plan to commercialize in 2025.
The family is also working on developing new designs and themes to cater to global trends, experimenting with different fabrics and colors while staying true to their classic style.
“What sells in the US are the traditional red, white, and gold colors, while in Europe, more natural tones like dusty rose and sage green are popular. We’re
always testing the market and pushing ourselves to stay ahead of the trends,” De Rivera-SanJuan said.
The De Riveras recognized that the success of the business is driven by genuine care for its people and a strong belief in the quality of its products.
While leading a thriving handicraft enterprise, De Rivera-SanJuan balances her role as a mother to two young children with remarkable grace. She draws strength from the constant support of her husband, who remains a steadfast partner in both family life and her entrepreneurial journey. Together, they ensure family values remain at the heart of their growing legacy.
As a marketing graduate from the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), her trenddriven strategic mindset often contrasts with her mother’s artistic vision—a dynamic that fuels creative synergy and drives innovation.
“I wasn’t forced into this business, but I always knew it was where I wanted to be. It’s a unique business, and I’m so proud of what my parents built,” De Rivera-SanJuan said.

COCA-COLA GOLF CLASSIC 2024: FOSTERING TEAMWORK, HELPING COMMUNITY
By Randy M. Caluag
IT was my rst time to join the Coca-Cola Charity Golf Classic.
This year’s gathering of Coca-Cola’s key stakeholders—key customers, suppliers, industry leaders, corporate and government partners, media, and gol ng friends—at Sta. Elena Golf Course and Country Club proved how partnerships and shared purpose can drive meaningful impact.
While I looked forward to a day of friendly competition on the fairways, I left with much more: the satisfaction of contributing to a cause that uplifts the communities Coca-Cola serves. Knowing that my participation played a role in advancing these e orts made the experience not only enjoyable but deeply ful lling. After all, this event embodies the spirit of Coca-Cola’s core principle of “Open Happiness.”
It was a true celebration of Everyday Greatness, embodying Coca-Cola’s mission to champion the small, meaningful actions that leave a lasting mark—not just on the sports eld but also in life.
Gareth McGeown, CEO and President of Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI), announced the tournament’s incredible achievement of raising P4.5 million for the programs of the CocaCola Foundation Philippines, Inc.
The amount included P3.5 million raised through the event, with CCBPI contributing an additional P1 million. These funds will support initiatives such as disaster response and education programs, including the company’s ongoing partnership with AHA Learning Center, a renowned nonpro t organization that nurtures highpotential public-school students and shapes future Filipino leaders.
“At CCBPI, we believe we are only as
strong as the communities we serve—a belief shared by all our partners. Every year at the Coca-Cola Golf Classic, we come together to enjoy an eventful day and witness the signi cant impact of our collective e orts in refreshing the Philippines and making a di erence,” shared McGeown.
TEAMWORK
The tournament adopted the four-man scramble format, which emphasized teamwork as players worked together to achieve the best possible result. This collaborative style was a refreshing departure from the individual-focused System 36 format. My own ight, led by Dino Datu of the Daily Tribune as our anchor, saw contributions from everyone. Marc Reyes of GMA News Online nearly won the nearest-to-pin award, and I
was proud to contribute some e cient approaches to the greens.
The overall team champions were the group of Romeo Castro Jr., Mario Rafael Mañaol, Josef Andrew Mendoza, and Raymundo Juanchoe, who secured victory with a winning gross score of 59.
The event was graced by Filipina professional golfers Bianca Pagdanganan, an Olympic athlete, and Sam Bruce, the rst Filipina nominated for the US NCAA Woman of the Year Award, adding prestige and inspiration to the day.

CHRISTMAS BURGER BALLS
By Niko Gabriel Salgado
THE holiday season is a time for family, celebration, and, of course, food. While we often spend hours preparing delicious meals for ourselves, our furry companions deserve some special treats, too. This Christmas, why not treat your dog to something festive, nutritious, and fun? Christmas Burger Balls for Dogs are the perfect recipe to get your pup in the holiday spirit. Packed with flavor, these protein-rich bites will have your dog’s tail wagging in excitement. Plus, they are simple to make and perfect for sharing in the spirit of the season.
Why Choose Burger Balls for Your Dog?
Burger balls are an excellent choice for homemade dog treats because they are easy to make, customizable, and made with ingredients that you can feel good about giving your pet. Unlike store-bought dog treats, which can sometimes contain artificial additives, preservatives, or excessive amounts of salt and sugar, you can ensure these treats are wholesome and healthy. With a few simple ingredients, these Christmasthemed burger balls provide a fun and nutritious snack for your dog.
What’s more, these treats are ideal for dogs of all sizes. You can easily adjust the size of the burger balls to suit your dog’s needs, whether you have a small breed or a large one. The ingredients used are also safe for most dogs, but as with any new treat, it is always a good idea to introduce it gradually and keep an eye out for any potential food sensitivities.
Ingredients for Christmas Burger Balls
Making these festive doggy treats is simple and requires ingredients that are typically found in your kitchen or local grocery store. Here's what you will need:
- 1 lb. ground pork, beef or chicken: Lean meats provide excellent protein sources for your dog and are generally easy to digest.
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree: Pumpkin is a great source of fiber and is good for your dog's digestion.
- 1/4 cup grated carrots: Carrots are low in calories but high in vitamins and fiber. They also add a nice texture to the burger balls.
- 1 large egg
(optional): Eggs are a great source of protein and help bind the ingredients together. If your dog is allergic to chicken, eggs and the like, avoid putting eggs.
This ingredient can do without the egg.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil: Healthy fats are essential for your dog's coat and skin. Olive oil also helps with cooking and keeps the burger balls moist.

and cats from death row. Animal lovers banded together, looked for adopters, asked for funds
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional): Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can be a beneficial addition to your dog’s diet.
Instructions
Once you have gathered your ingredients, making Christmas Burger Balls for Dogs is a fun and straightforward process. Here’s how to get started:
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the burger balls from sticking.
Step 2: Prepare the Meat
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat with the pumpkin puree, grated carrots, and egg. If you are using turmeric, sprinkle it in as well. Mix everything together thoroughly, ensuring the ingredients are evenly distributed.
to pay for the pound fees, and transported dogs daily to the vet clinic. One by one, or in twos and fours, the dogs and cats were rescued by Save ALL that memorable, stressful week of 2013. The dogs tested positive for distemper and being responsible rescuers, the Save ALL admin had the dogs treated first, before releasing them to their adopters. They were also dewormed and vaccinated against illnesses. After this mass rescue in Metro Manila, Save ALL fed dogs and cats in several pounds with no sufficient funds for food, and rescued sick dogs and cats from these pounds, had them treated, rehabilitated, and adopted. For the past 11 years, Save ALL has also been feeding homeless dogs and cats, and hungry, owned animals who are allowed by irresponsible owners to roam with-
Step 3: Form the Burger Balls
Using your hands, shape the mixture into small balls, roughly the size of a golf ball (about 1-2 inches in diameter). If you have a smaller dog, you can make the balls smaller; for larger dogs, make them slightly bigger.
Step 4: Bake the Burger Balls
Place the burger balls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the burger balls are cooked through and slightly golden on the outside.
Step 5: Cool and Serve
Once the burger balls are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely before serving them to your dog. Cooling the treats ensures they are safe to eat and preserves their shape.
Tips and Variations
- Meat Options: You can experiment with different types of lean meats, such as chicken or pork, depending on your dog’s preferences and dietary needs. Just ensure that the meat is lean and free from any seasoning.
- Freezing for Later: These burger balls can be stored in the fridge for up to a week, or you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Freezing the treats in batches is a great way to have a ready supply of homemade dog treats for the holidays.
- Holiday Twist: If you’d like to make these treats even more festive, you can shape them into holiday-themed shapes using a cookie cutter. Just be sure to avoid cutters with small parts that your dog might be able to swallow.
- Add in Sweet Potatoes: If you want to add more festive colors and nutrients, consider adding some mashed sweet potatoes into the mixture. Sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamins and fiber.
-Cooking option: If an oven is not available, you can opt to use an air fryer.

By Paola Navarette
EMBRACING the true essence of Christmas, local restaurant Gerry’s held its annual Diwa ng “Pasko sa Puso ng Gerry’s” gift-giving activity and spread holiday cheer to over 150 kids in Quezon City.
Gerry’s pool of volunteer employees joined hands to create a memorable festive experience for the young hearts in the community of Barangay Bungad—where their office is located—and Roxas through a partnership with Santo Cristo de Bungad Parish and Holy Family Parish.
“More than just delivering presents to these kids, our goal is to share the true warmth of the holiday spirit,” Gerry’s vice president for HR and Administration Joanne Lopez shared in an exclusive interview with Manila Standard.
“We started with just 20 kids in 2017 in Santo Cristo— then it became 30 kids and now, 50. As our beneficiaries grow, we hope to give more children a memorable Christmas in the coming years.”
The event featured exciting games like stop dance, bring me, and hep-hep hooray. Prizes and loot bags containing school supplies and snacks were given to the kids and they were treated to a sumptuous meal from Gerry’s. As the event concluded, the smiles and laughter of the young attendees highlighted the success of the company’s purposeful holiday tradition.
“Christmas is a season of giving and sharing. At Gerry’s, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve,” Lopez said.
“We’re always looking forward to hosting charity events such as this as it is part of our contribution to society,” she added.

silhouettes of Uniqlo pieces with Hindmarch’s signature whimsical aesthetic. Featuring fun motifs, playful details, and eye-catching stitching, the collaboration is set to add a burst of creativity to wardrobes just in time for Christmas.
“It’s also very special to us because it’s the first time that we have this in the Philippines,” said Reiny Vergara Uniqlo Philippines’ Head of PR and Sustainability, during an exclusive preview event. “But it’s already been a collaboration since one year ago. And now, we are very excited because, also in time for our ‘Uniqlo Thank You Festival,’ we are bringing in the Uniqlo and Anya Hindmarch collection.”
CUP
FILIPINO students dominated the recently concluded Singapore Challenge Cup, winning multiple gold and silver awards at the international dance competition held at the Gateway Theater in Bukit Merah. The event featured classical and modern dance genres, attracting participants from around the world.
The collaboration brings Hindmarch’s iconic eye motifs and distinctive stitching to some of Uniqlo’s classic pieces, including shirts, outerwear, and accessories. The playful designs are a nod to Hindmarch’s unique blend of high fashion and fun, making the collection a perfect addition to everyday wardrobes.
“And I think it’s a very perfect mix because you have these silhouettes of Uniqlo, colors of Uniqlo, and then you add on the creativity, the aesthetic of Anya Hindmarch, where you can see, for example, the eye motif, and then the stitches are also here. So it’s very playful and fun, you know, something to really add to your wardrobe,” she continued.
She also mentioned how the collection can be easily paired with your favorite clothing.
“It’s very easy to also match with, for example, because we’re still in a tropical country, but you know, something like long sleeves, and then maybe put on a skirt. It’s very, you know, everyday wear as well,” Vergara added.
Recently, the Uniqlo and Anya Hindmarch collection came as part of the brand’s annual “Thank You Festival,” a week-long event dedicated to celebrating Uniqlo’s loyal customers. From Nov. 22 to Nov. 28, Uniqlo stores nationwide offered limited-time deals on a wide range of items for men, women, kids, and babies, making it the perfect opportunity for shoppers to begin their Christmas shopping.
Shoppers who made a single receipt purchase of P3,500 or more received exclusive treats from Uniqlo, including limited-edition gifts and products from local Filipino brands, such as Cebu Dried Mango and Auro Chocolate, which created a special edition of their premium chocolate exclusively for the festival.
For those who prefer the convenience of online shopping, Uniqlo’s website and mobile app offer a smooth shopping experience with the option of having purchases delivered directly to your door or picking them up in-store via the brand’s “Click and Collect” service.

PROLONGING LIVES
IN MOTHER NATURE’S ABODE
By Abigail Adriatico
IN GREEK mythology, Gaia is known as the goddess of the earth and the mother of every living thing that resides within it. She is revered as a nurturing figure who nourishes living beings, personifying nature itself—ever-loving as she watches over the well-being of all.
facility dedicated to reversing biological aging and chronic progressive diseases through the combination of ancient healing practices, lifestyle modification, and modern scientific discoveries.
At the forefront of this revolutionary center is its founder, Mike Chan , whose mission to extend the lives of House of Gaia members began seven years ago after receiving the results of a medical check-up. To his surprise, despite being a proud athlete who spent a lot of time at the gym, he learned that he was prediabetic at the age of 47, just as he was about to become a father.
“I asked the doctor, ‘Doctor, how can this be? I’m in the gym six days a week, I eat organic eggs, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, how can this be?’ And the
doctor told me, ‘Mr. Chan, at 47, this is normal. This is normal with aging, and this is something that you will just have to accept,’” Chan recalled.
Driven by the desire to live longer for his child, Chan began researching how to improve his physical health and delved into the realm of medicine. After enrolling in Stanford Medicine’s Nutrition and Science course, Chan met oncologist and internal medicine specialist Evelyn Bischof, who is now the House of Gaia’s chief medical officer.
Through his studies in longevity
medicine, which utilizes aging biomarkers, longitudinal data tracking, and AI to monitor one’s aging pace, Chan founded House of Gaia to help its members reach the age of 100.
The center offers several longevity interventions, including the hyperoxic chamber, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), sensory deprivation, Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), and Electromagnetic Recovery for muscle recovery, as well
House of Gaia offers various therapeutic treatments utilizing high quality equipment from Europe, Japan, and Korea
as blood-based biological markers.
In addition, the House of Gaia provides treatments designed to support optimal health and well-being. These include various types of massages, facial services, laser treatments, infusions, and medical services.
“What most people don’t realize is that the technology to significantly extend human lifespan is already here,” said Chan. “So the future is really, really bright. You just have to live long enough to get there.” House of Gaia’s longevity programs include the Platinum, Gold Premium, and Gold programs.
