ORMER President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs allegedly served as a cover for a “grand criminal enterprise” and systemic corruption involving high-ranking government officials and international drug trafficking networks, the House Quad Committee said.

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) is reopening its investigation into the 2020 murder of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary Wesley Barayuga.
The House committee's senior vice chairperson, Antipolo Rep. Romeo Acop, said the mega panel's initial findings indicated that Duterte and his inner circle allegedly enabled and profited from the drug trade they had publicly vowed to eliminate.
“The Quad Comm has started to uncover a grand criminal enterprise, and, it would seem that at the center of it is former President Duterte. This is truly hurtful because it seems we were all taken for a ride,” Acop said.
He said the Duterte administration’s most trusted officials wielded both the “purse and the sword” and weaponized these both for personal and political gain.

THE House Quad Committee lifted its contempt order against dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo or Guo Hua Ping, Chinese businessman Tony Yang or Yang Jianxin, and Lucky South 99 representative Cassandra Ong.
“It is most unfortunate that the sword was used to slit, stab, and slash the very people it swore to protect and the Purse was used not to benefit the Republic but to line the pockets of the few. They drowned our country with drugs, and they benefited from this,” Acop added.
On Sunday, PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil said he ordered the reopening of the cold case after whistleblower Police Lt. Col. Santie Mendoza told the House Quad Committee that he helped carry out the killing at the behest of ex-PCSO general manager Royina Garma.
Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers said Duterte's economic adviser, Michael Yang, “may be one of the

TRADERS are pointing to the flawed guidelines of Executive Order (EO) 62, which cut rice import duties from 35 percent to 15 percent, for the government’s failure to substantially bring down retail prices of rice. Local rice traders argued that the measure has instead created imbalances in the market. Philippine Rice Industry Stakeholders Movement (PRISM) co-founder Orlando Manuntag, a rice trader himself, highlighted the absence of limits on the importation of rice varieties under EO 62.

biggest 'budol' (frauds) who posed as a legitimate businessman.”
“Behind all of his businesses, he used our officials so that he could ship tons of illegal drugs into our country in the guise of being a legit investor. So that, for me, is really how we were duped,” Barbers said.
The Quad Committee's partial findings will be submitted to the House plenary on December 17.
Acop, for his part, cited the testimony of former police intelligence officer Col. Eduardo Acierto, who categorically named Duterte and Senators Christopher Go and Ronald dela Rosa as “integral personalities in protecting the illegal drugs network in the Philippines.”
“Worse, they served as key figures in ensuring that large volumes of illegal drugs slip right through our borders. And where is Col. Acierto now? He's in hiding because former President Duterte wants him dead,” said Acop, a lawyer and former police general.
Dela Rosa was the former national police chief during the Duterte administration while Go served as the former President's special assistant.
“This is very painful because President Digong won on the platform of a hardline stance against illegal drugs and criminality, but he turned out to be the face of illegal drugs and criminality," Acop said.
Acop also highlighted what he described as a "perverse" reward system that fueled the wave of alleged extrajudicial killings during Duterte's drug war.
Rewards ranged from P20,000 to P1 million, as testified by former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office general manager Royina Garma and corroborated by former National Police Commission head Edilberto Leonardo.
“The existence of the rewards system is not denied; in fact, former president Duterte and his cohorts even boasted about it," Acop said.
“It appears the war on drugs was a convenient way to eliminate competition in the drug trade. More specifically, the local manufacturers,” he added.

66% last year and 50% in the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, optimism about the national economy has also diminished, with 48% expecting improvement compared to 67% last year and 53% last quarter, the survey said. On household financial stability, 60% of Filipinos express confidence, but notably lower than the 70% reported a year ago.
The survey further said regional and demographic insights show that key areas such as North-Central Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—traditionally strongholds of the Marcos and Duterte bases—are driving the decline in sentiment. Concerns are more pronounced among middle- and high-income earners, private-sector workers, OFW and non-OFW families, and individuals with a college background.
Among low-income groups, optimism about household financial prospects heading into Q1-2025 remains the lowest.
By the end of the year, only 51% of respondents expressed optimism about the nation’s current state, a steep drop from 68% last year. This decline has left Filipinos split evenly between positive and negative perceptions of the country’s status.
The survey also highlighted the issues Filipinos deem most urgent for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to address. Corruption remains the top concern at 21%, followed by prices and inflation at 13%, and the overall economy at 12%. Illegal drugs have also emerged as a pressing issue, matching inflation at 13%.

THE Supreme Court of the Philippines released the results of the 2024 Bar examinations on Friday, December 13.
Out of 10,490 candidates who participated in the exams held on September 8, 11, and 15, a total of 3,962 examinees successfully passed, resulting in a passing rate of 37.84%.
Kyle Christian Tutor from the University of the Philippines emerged as the topnotcher, achieving an impressive score of 85.77%. The University of the Philippines demonstrated its academic strength by securing four positions in the Top 10.
Ateneo de Manila University also made a significant impact, with six candidates featured in the Top 20.
The University of Santo Tomas contributed two topnotchers to the list, while several other institutions, including Angeles University Foundation and San Beda University, each had one representative in the rankings.
In his message to the successful bar examiners, House Speaker Mar-
Guo was cited in contempt on September 19 and is currently held at the Pasig City Jail. She was accused of coddling POGO operators during her tenure as Bamban mayor through her China-linked business enterprises. Yang, on the other hand, was detained under the custody of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission. He was cited in contempt on September 27 for allegedly lying about his business associates.
As this developed, PAOCC said over 150 smaller scale POGOs are being monitored as the December 15

On June 20, President Marcos issued EO 62 through Executive Sec. Lucas Bersamin to help moderate rice prices at a time when tight supply had triggered an unabated surge in retail prices.
The order sought to lower traders’ costs by imposing a Most Favored Nation (MFN) tariff schedule on rice imports, which was held at a much lower 15 percent.

Manuntag disclosed his own importation strategy amid import imbalances: half premium rice and half wellmilled and regular-milled rice.
His clarifications came on the heels of criticisms that rice traders, importers and other “middlemen” have been enjoying lower tariffs on the staple grain but have refused to pass on the savings to consumers.
He also defended retailers, often blamed for price surges, stressing that their profit margins are slim.
“Retailers typically mark-up rice by only 4 to 5 pesos per kilo to cover es-

Speaking in a video address, the chief executive highlighted the critical role of accurate communication during disasters, warning that the spread of false information could lead to confusion and endanger lives.
"Effective disaster response is anchored on reliable information," he said, urging citizens to rely on updates from official agencies like the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
Mr. Marcos assured that PHIVOLCS will continue to issue around-theclock advisories in simple, clear lan-

The crux of the issue, according to Manuntag, lies with importers prioritizing premium rice for higher profits.
Data showed that 74% of rice imports in 2024 were premium varieties, while only 4% were low-cost rice.

Manuntag criticized the government’s failure to regulate rice importation.

Manuntag said most traders are in favor of the reinstatement of the National Food Authority’s (NFA) traditional mandate, which included price stabilization and buffer stocking.

THE nine-day “Simbang Gabi” or the Dawn Mass will start on December 16, Monday, which will officially start the Christmas season in the Philippines, according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
“Simbang Gabi is a traditional Filipino way of preparing for the great feast of Christmas. For Filipino Catholics, (it) is above all an expression of their filial devotion to Mary, the Mother of God,” Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, proprefect of Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, said in a circular released to the clergy of the Manila Archdiocese.
Celebrated from 4am to 5am, the dawn mass, also known as Misa de Aguinaldo, traces its origin from the tradition brought by the Spanish evangelizers to the country.
“We wish to encourage the practice of Simbang Gabi, whether at dawn or in the evening because it is a great source of spiritual nourishment to our faithful,” Tagle added.
The early hour of the celebration serves as a “gift” of the faithful to God as they prepare to receive Christ in their lives, it noted.

It is not for politicians or public servants. This cannot be called a pork barrel or funding for anyone else. This is the funding of the DSWD,” he said.
“The AKAP program is designed to extend its reach to individuals in need,
particularly in remote areas, by facilitating access through our offices and offsite payout locations. Rather than requiring beneficiaries to travel to us, we proactively go to them. Assistance is allocated based on assessed need, distinguishing it from the 4Ps program, which provides regular support aimed at lifting individuals out of poverty,” Gatchalian explained. Controversy surrounding the program intensified when Senator Imee Marcos claimed that the funding was an unexpected addition to the budget
and not a priority for the administration led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Mr. Marcos argued that the allocation for AKAP should be removed from the proposed 2025 budget, questioning its necessity given other government priorities.
“All programs are subject to evaluation by social workers. Merely receiving a request from politicians does not guarantee that assistance will be provided. The decision regarding who receives aid and the amount allocated is ultimately determined by the social worker,” Gatchalian clarified.

IT’S always easy to comment on certain issues from the outside. Such is the folly of our “maritess” culture – which has been, by the way, in place long before the distinctly Filipino term was coined.
For example, if your hear that your friend was getting beaten by her husband, or if an acquaintance was being subjected to verbal and psychological abuse by her partner, or if a relative was being forced to earn a living for six children because their father refuses to support them financially, your first advice would likely be: “Leave!”
You would most likely be frustrated when, after a particularly violent episode, and after you’ve dished out advice you think is a no-brainer, you would see that friend/ acquaintance/ relative back with her abusive partner, trying to look as though everything were all right.
“Stupid,” you might think. But you’d be failing to realize that a woman would have a thousand considerations before actually fleeing the violent environment. It is almost never a first option for countless women. To some, it is never an option at all. What about the children, she might think. She would not want to displace them or cause them the stigma of coming from a “broken home.” Appearances are a powerful factor, as well, especially if the couple are known figures or are looked up to by many. Some women define themselves in terms of belonging to a conventional social unit, and without it, they might feel they are nothing. Some cling because they believe it is their solemn vow to stay on at whatever cost.
Economics is another force – some women are financially dependent on their husbands that they would not know how to keep a lifestyle that they have already become accustomed to. Or, at the very least, how to start looking for work when the children still need tending to, or when they have had neither work experience nor skills for a job. Fear, too. Some men could not bear the thought of letting their wives or partners go even when they treat them shabbily. Thus, all sorts of threats are made, all meant to scare the woman into further submission.
That, or hope – hope that the other person would eventually see the light, and change.
Another potent factor is inertia. It could be better to deal with the devil you know (status quo) than the devil you don’t (what’s out there if she strikes out on her own).
Psychologists have brought up the existence of the battered woman syndrome that could help explain why some wom-
en cannot seem to recognize destructive patterns, break abusive cycles, and reclaim their lives and start over.
Those who are able to do so are fortunate.

According to the Philippine Commission for Women, VAW is a pervasive social problem not just in the Philippines but worldwide. Here in our country, nearly one in five women have experienced emotional, physical, or sexual abuse by their current or most recent husband or intimate partner.
Ending violence also means enabling survivors to begin anew.
But to be aware is one thing; to actually end the cycle of violence is quite another. Afterward, when the violence ends – the woman leaves, for instance, or is issued a protective order, or the partner is put away, what then?
The newly-liberated woman is never jubilant. There is the overwhelming fear of and uncertainty about the life that lies ahead. What if the children do not come with her? What if her love and longing for her husband far outweighs the pain of abuse? What if she cannot find a job to sustain herself, or cannot live with the stigma of being a separada?
Help is needed in starting over as badly as it is needed to end violent cycles. Check up on them when they go quiet. Let them know you are there even if just to keep them company or listen. Extend opportunities to earn. Suggest hobbies or distractions that would allow them to rebuild their self-esteem. And many other ways. Let families, communities, and government support systems prepare for that, as well.
So if you know somebody you think is fighting these battles, know when and how to help. The story never ends when violence is ended. Beginning anew is a logical extension of fleeing abuse. We have always pledged help to raise consciousness to end violence. Let’s take it further -- we must also be ready to help survivors rise and face the life they have reclaimed. adellechua@gmail.com
SYRIA’S hopeless predicament as a “forever flashpoint” of geopolitics started since the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the French takeover of the country and eventual “independence” in 1945-1946 from de jure to formally gaining de facto independence.
The explosive mix of religious-ethnic groups of Sunni, Druze, Christian, Shia and Alawite and the enduring interference of Western powers condemn Syria to endemic conflicts.
In 2003, former US NATO command chief Gen. Wesley Clark in his “The Clark Critique” which he also narrated in public interviews, revealed the US’ plans to attack seven Muslim states” in seven years, a plan he criticized as a “Cold War approach.”
The seven countries were Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Syria, with Iran as the final target. Syria survived as Russia intervened in 2015, but the US strangled Syria’s oil supply, taking over Syria’s oil fields with 1,000 troops and rebel factions.
In October 2019, President Donald Trump admitted before global media the “U.S. will be ‘’keeping the oil’ in
HOPES run high among Filipinos that President Marcos Jr.’s directive to law enforcement and anti-corruption entities to carry out operations against banned Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs) still existing will be implemented.
These POGOs have existed since September 2016, in the same period then president Rodrigo Duterte was condemning online gaming in his speeches, when the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation created the country’soffshore gaming operators.
There are still 47 POGOs operating in the Philippines, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, but the Presidential ban covers these as well.
The President was clear when he issued the directive during the 2nd Joint National Peace and Order Council-Regional Peace and Order Councils meeting for 2024 in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
The President wants the Philippine Anti-Organized Crime Commission, Philippine National Police, and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to intensify their operations against POGOs that are still operating despite the ban.
As of Nov. 29 this year, there were 53,700 canceled offshore gaming em-
northeastern Syria” (actually stealing, a war crime) which constituted 70 to 80 percent of Syria’s oil production.
This, plus economic sanctions, are reasons for Assad’s fall whose government penury compelled Assad to pay his Syrian Arab Army soldiers and generals from $7 and $40 per month only, hardly enough for survival, while the rebel jihadist generals were getting $2,000.
There is one view the GCC countries will be kneeling before the US with Syria’s fall
The economic squeeze on Assad and his nation is one of the major reasons Assad’s Syria lost the will to fight.
Instead, Assad arranged with and through Russia a relatively peaceful transition to the new rebel government which has retained momentarily As-
sad’s prime minister and other government officials, and announced it will respect “diversity” (freedom of religion), and a stable transition (although violations are already being reported).
Syria is now being carved up. Israel, taking the Golan Heights, then bombing and demolishing Syrian military facilities that the new Sunni Islamic fundamentalist government may turn on it eventually, while the US and its Kurdish proxies consolidate its own areas and Erdogan’s proxy Syrian National Army fortify itself in its controlled areas.
Diverse Syrian terror groups from Central Asia, Eastern China, Russia’s Caucasus are anticipated to be used by U.S. in its geopolitical destabilization elsewhere.
It is now evident that negotiations between Assad, through Russia with the backers of the rebel groups commanding only 25,000 fighters, are for a controlled withdrawal.
Several discussions followed re-
ployment licenses; 18 Internet Gaming Licensees or IGLs – the previously named POGOs – voluntarily canceling their licenses; and 27 IGLs in the process of winding down their operations.
We hope the farreaching power of the authorities as it were would put those trying to defy the ban in a trap
Suspicious illegal activities, especially those concerning POGOs, should be monitored by the Local Government Units, according to the President, and the Department of Interior and Local Government should step up gathering substantial intelligence from local communities.
porting direct orders from Assad to his 200,000 strong army to fall back without fighting from Aleppo, Hama, and Homs until finally nearing Damascus, the army was ordered to shed their military uniforms and blend into the civilian mainstream.
There are still many murky shadows in the background, but it is clear Russia avoided a situation where it would bleed indefinitely if fully committed to sustain the Assad government, avoiding the Afghanistan situation of the Americans before.
Likely too, a Russian deal with the insurgents of the new government is most likely through Turkey and GCC countries, major backers of the new government. Hence, Russia’s air and naval bases in Latakia and Tartus continue to be secure.
There is a view that China lost geopolitical stock from Assad’s fall, but as I see it, this loss is only minimal and indirectly through the losses of Russia and Iran which, at the moment, is the
We know the ban would result in 40,000 people losing their jobs –27,000 of them Filipinos – who are working directly with the POGOs, but the Department of Labor should by now have in its bulletin board possible jobs for those who would be displaced.
There were security issues linked to POGOs, including related criminal activities, including but not limited to illegally operating overnight, a rise in undocumented workers from China, and a weak response from government agencies.
POGO operations have also impacted communities by increasing fear and anxiety associated with illegal activities, not to mention the discernment that groups engaged in illegal or criminal activities wield significant economic influence in certain areas which erodes institutional integrity.
Earlier on, President Marcos issued Executive Order 74 imposing an immediate ban on offshore and internet gaming, stressing the State has the predominant duty to safeguard national security, maintain public order, uphold the rule of law, protect the safety of the Filipino people, and ensure the integrity of the country’s social fabric.
We join Filipinos in their hope that, this time, the far-reaching power of the authorities as it were would put those trying to defy the ban in a trap.
biggest loss along with Hezbollah and the Palestinians. There is one view the GCC countries will be kneeling before the US with Syria’s fall, but I doubt this thesis as China will still be the biggest buyer of GCC oil and money talks a lot. In the Philippines, the two-year old high intensity intervention of the US to re-assert its domination has succeeded in severely dividing the Filipino political milieu while forcing a severe deterioration of its economicfinancial conditions after cutting off major economic lifelines of China to the Philippines.
The World Bank has just “trimmed” Philippine growth outlook which is even actually worse that figures show, as the massive decline in people’s living conditions is real and palpable.
As Philippine economic conditions continue to deteriorate faster, its national fragmentation transpires, and the easier for the US to use in its geopolitical “flashpoint”.
PARIS – Some callers are women fearful they have been drugged and sexually assaulted; others are doctors worried they have misdiagnosed them -- a helpline set up amid France’s notorious mass rape trial has tapped a nation’s unease.
The helpline, known as the Reference Center on Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault (or CRAFS, its acronym in French), was launched by a Paris health center on Oct. 15.
That was in the middle of testimony at the rape trial of Dominique Pelicot and 50 other defendants, which has shocked the country, sparked mass protests and raised awareness in France about the use of drugs to commit abuse.
For years, Gisele Pelicot, Dominique’s nowformer wife, had strange memory lapses and other health problems, consulting numerous doctors who could not pinpoint the cause. Then police told her she had been drugged and raped for nearly a decade by her husband and dozens of strangers he recruited online.
Since its launch, the helpline has received a wave of calls from healthcare providers and victims seeking information about drug-related abuse, said Leila Chaouachi, a doctor who founded the service.
“The doctors who contact us say they, too, might not have noticed anything,” said Chaouachi, referring to Gisele Pelicot’s symptoms. “What are the warning signs? They feel they don’t have enough training,” she added. AFP
China: Drills around Taiwan ‘decided by us’
BEIJING – China’s defense ministry said Friday any drills it may hold around Taiwan “are decided by us alone,” as Taipei announced the apparent end of massive military exercises not formally declared by Beijing.
Taiwanese authorities said this week that Beijing was holding its biggest maritime drills in years, deploying dozens of warships and coast guard vessels in an area stretching from near the southern islands of Japan to the South China Sea.
Hsieh Ching-chin, deputy director general of Taiwan’s coast guard, said Friday that the ships had returned to China, adding that Taipei considered the maneuvers to be “over.”
Asked about the alleged drills on Friday, Wu Qian, a spokesman for Beijing’s defense ministry, did not confirm whether they had taken place. But he said that “whether or not we hold exercises, and when we hold them, are decided by us alone, based on our own needs and the circumstances of our struggle”, according to an official social media account of the armed forces. Venezuela releases over 300 detained in unrest
CARACAS – More than 300 people arrested in protests against the reelection of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have been released from prison, the government announced Thursday.
The detainees were accused of “terrorism” and taken to maximum security jails after a crackdown following the reelection of Maduro, which the opposition alleged was fraudulent.
Authorities freed 103 people this week, according to the interior ministry, which it said added to the 225 detainees also held over post-election unrest who were released in mid-November.
Rights group Foro Penal told AFP it has counted 190 people who have been released so far.
More than 2,400 people were arrested during the unrest after the July 28 vote, which left at least 28 dead and nearly 200 injured. AFP
‘FBI agents had no role in Capitol attack’
WASHINGTON, DC – Undercover FBI agents were not present during the 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Donald Trump supporters, a Justice Department watchdog said Thursday (Friday in Manila) in a report debunking a popular right-wing conspiracy theory.
“We found no evidence in the materials we reviewed or the testimony we received showing or suggesting that the FBI had undercover employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on January 6,” Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz said in an 88-page report. Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6
DAMASCUS – G7 leaders will meet virtually Friday to discuss the momentous changes underway in Syria, where the interim government has vowed to institute the “rule of law” after years of abuses under ousted president Bashar alAssad.
Assad fled Syria after a lightning offensive spearheaded by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group and its allies, which brought a sudden end to five decades of repressive rule by his clan.
Syrians across the country and around the world erupted in celebration after enduring an era in which suspected dissidents were jailed or killed, and nearly 14 years of war that killed more than 500,000 people and displaced millions.
The United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said Thursday that 1.1 million
people, mostly women and children, had been displaced since the rebels launched their offensive on November 27.
The new government’s spokesman told AFP on Thursday that the country’s constitution and parliament would be suspended during a three-month transition.
“A judicial and human rights committee will be established to examine the constitution and then introduce amendments,” Obaida Arnaout said.
Speaking at the state television headquarters, seized by the new rebel authorities, Arnaout said they would institute the “rule of law”.
“All those who committed crimes against the Syrian people will be judged in accordance with the law,” he added.
Asked about religious and personal freedoms, Arnaout said: “We respect reli-
gious and cultural diversity in Syria”.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on a visit to Turkey, urged Syrian actors to take “all feasible steps to protect civilians, including members of minority groups”, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
Speaking earlier Thursday in Jordan, Blinken stressed the importance of “not sparking any additional conflicts.” He made the comments after mentioning recent Israeli and Turkish military activity on Syrian soil. Washington hopes to ensure that Syria is not “used as a base for terrorism” and does not pose “a threat to its neighbors,” added Blinken, whose country has hundreds of troops in Syria as part of a coalition against Islamic State group jihadists. US announces new $500-m military aid package to bolster Ukraine
WASHINGTON, DC – The United States on Thursday (Friday in Manila) announced a new $500 million package of military aid for Ukraine, as Washington races to bolster Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
“The United States is providing another significant package of urgently needed weapons and equipment to our Ukrainian partners as they defend against Russia’s ongoing attacks,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement, with the aid to be drawn from US military stockpiles.
Trump’s November election victory has cast doubt on the future of American aid for Ukraine, providing a limited window for billions of dollars in already authorized assistance to be disbursed before he is sworn in next month.
The Republican has said his incoming administration will “probably” reduce
aid to Ukraine, which Washington has been steadfastly backing since its invasion by Russia nearly three years ago.
The package announced Thursday includes ammunition for precision HIMARS rocket launchers, artillery ammunition, drones, armored vehicles, and equipment to protect against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks, along with other equipment, the statement said. It follows a $988 million security assistance package and a separate $725 million package, both announced earlier this month.
The outgoing US administration is working to get as much aid as possible to Ukraine before Trump -- who has repeatedly criticized US assistance for Kyiv and claimed he could secure a ceasefire within hours -- takes over. AFP
SEOUL – South Korea’s opposition leader warned his ruling party colleagues on Friday that “history will remember” if they do not back the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, with just over 24 hours until a vote to remove him from office.
Yoon’s short-lived imposition of South Korea’s first martial law in over four decades plunged the country’s vibrant and combative democracy into some of its worst political turmoil in years. An attempt to remove him from office last Saturday failed when lawmakers from the ruling People Power

Two hundred votes are needed for it to pass, meaning opposition lawmakers must convince eight ruling party colleagues to defect. On Friday, the leader of the Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, implored the PPP to support the president’s removal from office.
“What the lawmakers must protect is neither Yoon nor the ruling People Power Party but the lives of the people wailing out in the freezing streets,” Lee said.
“Please join in supporting the impeachment vote tomorrow. History will remember and record your choice.”
Two ruling party lawmakers supported the motion last week.
And as of Friday noon, seven ruling party lawmakers have pledged to support impeachment -- leaving the vote on a knife edge. AFP
THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has formed a technical working group to review road safety regulations amid a series of accidents in the National Capital Region.
The MMDA on Thursday convened a group of truckers, haulers, and motorcycle ride-hailing operators to formulate a new policy on road safety.
MMDA chairman Romando Artes, general manager Procopio Lipana, and Land Transportation Office chief Vigor Mendoza II organized the stakeholders' meeting.
The meeting came up with a consensus to form a technical working group to study how to resolve incidents of road collisions, concerns over overloading by cargo haulers, and other issues.
For MMDA’s part, Artes gave assurance they will make the collection and recording of data in the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS) more comprehensive.
Among the stakeholders who attended the meeting were the Alliance of Concerned Truck Owners and Organizations, the Inland Haulers and Truckers Association, the Automobile Association of the Philippines, and motorcycle ride-hailing apps including Angkas, JoyRide, and Lalamove.
Representatives from the Department of Transportation, the Department of the Interior and Local Government; the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and the Police Highway Patrol Group were also present at the meeting.

THE Taguig City government has belied an alleged shooting incident on Wednesday at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) as claimed by ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro.
Castro, during a public hearing of the House Quad-Committee, said a police officer fired a gun at a motorcycle rider near her vehicle in BGC.
Castro claimed that two policemen got out of their patrol car after a man on a motorcycle drove up near them, after which one of the lawmen fired his gun
in an area filled with civilians.
However, Taguig officials asserted that the incident took place along Makati Ave. which is within the jurisdiction of Makati City, not Taguig.
The officials added that Taguig’s police sub-station commander, along with the BGC Estate Association, and Megaworld’s security offices confirmed that no such incident occurred in BGC on that date or even in recent weeks.

The city government gave assurance it is committed to ensuring peace and security in all areas under its jurisdiction.
SPD nabs Taiwanese for gun possession
THE Southern Police District (SPD) has arrested a Taiwanese national for violation of the country’s firearms and ammunitions law or Republic Act No. 10591.
The suspect, identified only by his aliases Zhang and Ming, was nabbed inside a shopping mall in Makati City in coordination with the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region. Investigations disclosed that the suspect was a member of a notorious syndicate based in Taiwan, involved in various criminal activities such as the production of illegal narcotics, telecommunications fraud, and other crimes.
The foreigner was also earlier arrested along with three other other undocumented immigrants on March 1, 2023 by CIDG operatives.
The arrest resulted in the seizure of numerous firearms, including 53 revolvers, 13 5.56mm assault rifles, 12 pistols, six folding machine guns, an FN P90 sub-machine gun, a gun kit, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, assorted magazines, three suppressors, and four pistol barrels. Vince Lopez

CANADA steps up its support for the Philippines’ energy transition and decarbonization efforts.
This observation emerged during a recent visit by a Canadian trade mission to the Philippines, with over 300 Canadians from more than 190 business organizations.
The Canadian government’s Indo-Pacific trade representative Paul Thoppil reiterated his country’s support to the Philippines’ energy transition, citing the growing alignment of Canada’s development assistance on climate action.
“We have created, with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Canadian Climate and Nature Fund for Private Sector in Asia. KALIBO, Aklan—Kalibo Mayor Juris Sucro said Friday his administration is currently working on making it mandatory to install wires and cables underground to ward off problems about the so-called 'spaghetti wires' which are an eyesore for the public.
For several years, local residents have been complaining about the spaghetti wires that have resulted in accidents. These wires include a mix of electrical distribution lines, as well as cable television and communication cables. We will do the underground cabling in Kalibo through several segments,” Sucro said in his social media post. It was gathered that the first stages of the underground cabling to be implemented are the commercial areas in between barangays Poblacion and Andagaw.
These areas are host to schools, malls, and hospitals among others, with persistent heavy traffic almost a daily occurrence.

THE Philippine national men’s football team managed to take control in some of their situations during their game.
And it showed when the Philippine side opened its campaign with a 1-all draw with Myanmar on Thursday evening in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
National coach Albert Capellas said this before they left the country for their game against Laos this Sunday in Vientiane.
“I always say to the players that every game is different. And there are times that you have to control all the phases of the game. And in some phases, we failed. That is why I’m not satisfied with our game. But I’m still happy with the win,” said Capellas.
Fil-Norwegian booter Bjorn Kristensen, displaying steadiness, sank a penalty shot past goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung in the 71st minute, allowing the Philippines to equalize the count in the remaining time.
Playing in front of the 1,589 fans, the Philippines moved to third spot, behind leaders Vietnam and Indonesia in Group A. Kristensen’s goal came after the Philippines made four attempts in the first half, in response to Mg Mg Lwin’s free kick in the 26th minute that gave Myanmar a 1-0 lead.
Myanmar wanted to add another one, but Ye Yint Aung’z goal in the 63rd minute was ruled an offside.
The Philippines could have struck with more goals, but attempts by newcomer Javier Mariona in the 81st minute and Paul Tabinas in the 86th minute were slightly off target.

Or will Manila Southwoods rally in time and capture a record-setting 10th straight crown?
The answer will be known Saturday as they clash in the fourth and final round in the 74th Januarius Fil Am Invitational here.

THE highly anticipated McDonald’s Stripes Run 2024 concluded with record-breaking success on December 1, 2024, at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.
The 13th edition of this family fun run attracted a staggering 11,000 participants, making it the largest turnout in the event’s history. Since its launch in 2010, the McDonald’s Stripes Run has been a celebration of family, friendship, and fitness.
This year’s event continued its tradition of supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), raising ₱1 million for the benefit of the Bahay Bulilit Learning Centers, which provide safe and nurturing spaces for children in underserved communities. McDonald’s Philippines attributes the event’s record-breaking participation to continuous innovation and a strong digital outreach strategy. “The McDonald’s Stripes Run has built a loyal following over the years, but we’ve also worked hard to keep

BOP surplus in third quarter
Current account deficit in third quarter
$112.7 billion

THE Philippines’ balance of payments (BOP) posted a surplus of $3.7 billion in in the third quarter of 2024. a turnaround from a deficit of $524 million in the same period last year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Friday.
“The significant increase in net inflows in the financial account led to a reversal to BOP surplus, notwithstanding a wider deficit in the current account,” the BSP said in a statement. It said that from January to September, the BOP position also posted a surplus of $5.1 billion, higher than the $1.7-billion surplus logged a year ago.
The BSP said the surplus reflected mainly the significantly higher net inflows from the financial account.
The current account deficit in the third quarter reached $5.7 billion, equivalent to -5.2 percent of the gross domestic product, higher by 154.4 percent than the $2.2 billion deficit or -2.2 percent of GDP a year earlier.
“This turnout was driven by the wider trade in goods gap and lower net receipts in trade in services and primary income accounts. This was partly muted by the higher net receipts in the secondary income account,” the BSP said.
The current account deficit widened by 19.3 percent to reach $12.9 billion, equivalent to -3.9 percent of the GDP in the first three quarters of 2024 from the $10.8-billion deficit or -3.5 percent of the GDP in the same period in 2023.
“The higher current account deficit emanated from the lower net receipts in trade in services. However, this was offset partly by the narrowing goods trade deficit and higher net receipts in the primary and secondary income accounts,” the BSP said.
The capital account recorded net receipts of $20 million in the third quarter, up by 19.4 percent yearon-year from $16 million in the third quarter of 2023. This came on the back of higher receipts from gross disposals of non-produced nonfinancial assets at $3 million from $0.4 million.
THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Friday it approved a $30-million loan to support public–private partnership (PPP) projects in the Philippines and help the country strengthen infrastructure development, advance climate action and enhance economic competitiveness.
It said the loan would replenish the Project Development and Monitoring Facility (PDMF) managed by the government’s Public–Private Partnership Center (PPPC) to support the design and implementation of bankable PPP projects. It will also help enhance the capacity of implementing agencies and local government units (LGUs) to develop and manage these projects, it said.
“The Philippines is considered one of the leaders in the Asia and the Pacific region in the use of PPPs as a modality for addressing infrastructure gaps and pursuing sustainable growth and development,” said ADB Philippines country director Pavit Ramachandran.
“Through this new loan, ADB is helping ensure the continuous preparation of bankable and feasible climate-
resilient PPP projects in the country as well as the availability of global expertise for successful PPP implementation,” said Ramachandran.
The loan will support as many as 35 national and local PPP projects from 2025 to 2029, with all projects undergoing climate risk screening and management to ensure alignment with the Philippines’ nationally determined contribution.
These projects will cover railways, roads, transport network improvements and essential community facilities, contributing to the improvement of living standards for Filipinos.
A comprehensive capacity-building program in developing PPP projects will be created for the PPPC, implementing agencies and LGUs.
THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reminded consumers in to exercise caution when participating in sales promotions offered by various businesses.
Given the surge of enticing offers and discounts, especially during this holiday season, consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and ensure that promotional activities are legitimate and comply with fair trade laws.
It said that to confirm a promotion’s legitimacy, consumers should check the advertisement if it contains the mandatory phrase: “Per DTI Fair Trade Permit No.____”; specific promo duration; and presence of a DTI representative to supervise during raffle draws.

THE Energy Regulatory Commission approved the 15-year power supply agreement (PSA) of Manila Electric Co. and San Miguel Corp.-led Excellent Energy Resources Inc. (EERI), subject to several conditions.
Meralco and EERI signed a PSA covering 1,200 megawatts of baseload capacity during a previously-held competitive selection process.
Meralco awarded EERI the PSA for its offer of P7.1094 per kilowatt-hour in terms of total delivered levelized cost of electricity, VAT inclusive.
EERI will supply Meralco from its 1,275-MW combined cycle power plant in Ilijan, Batangas City. The
the presence of old or regular price tag should be evident. Prizes or freebies that fall under the list of mandatory certification scheme should have product standard (PS) or import commodity clearance (ICC) markings.
The permit number indicates that the DTI officially approved the sales promo permit.
“Promotional activities without this declaration should be reported to the concerned government agencies: the DTI for consumer products; the Department of Agriculture for agricultural products; the Department of Health for food, drugs, medicines, and medical devices; and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for wood and other forest products,” the agency said.
ERC, however, approved a rate of P6.0038 per kWh for the PSA.
ERC chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta said while many of the conditions of the PSA approval were considered standard, the commission had to add new ones in the wake of the pending acquisition of Meralco’s power arm Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) of a majority stake in Chromite Gas Holdings (CGHI).
CGHI intends to acquire EERI’s newly-constructed 1,300-MW natural gas plant and San Miguel Energy Corp.’s 1,200-MW Ilijan natural gas power plant.
CHGI, together with San Miguel Global Power, will also acquire the LNG import and regasification terminal owned by Linseed Field Corp.
SUBWAY STATION. International delegation and participants of the High-Level 16th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia take a technical tour to the Camp Aguinaldo Subway Station to learn more about the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) on Dec. 12, 2024. The tour is the culmination of the 3-day EST Forum co-organized by the Philippines, through the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
DTI Region 11 director Romeo Castañaga also urged the public to be careful in online sales promotions especially on social media as reviews and testimonials can be faked.
“There are social media pages that somehow copy the names of famous brands or shops. They offer products at hard-to-believe low prices. If the offer is too good to be true, be more vigilant. Scrutinize the post and the page behind it. Most importantly, report it to avoid victimizing others,” Castañaga said.
“While sales promos are exciting opportunities to save, we urge consumers to be vigilant. A little caution can go a long way in avoiding scams and ensuring a safe shopping experience,” he said.

BDO Unibank Inc. rose 1.21 percent to P150, while Bank of the Philippines slipped 1.93 percent to P132. Asian markets fell Friday as China’s latest vows to boost the beleaguered economy failed to stir much excitement, while traders looked ahead to a key Federal Reserve policy meeting next week. A tepid week was on course for a damp finish, with Wall Street offering a negative lead after fresh data pointing to a pick-up in inflation. Hong Kong and Shanghai both tumbled as investors shrugged at Beijing’s pledge to introduce measures aimed at “lifting consumption vigorously” as part of a drive to reignite growth in the world’s number two economy. President Xi Jinping and other key leaders said they would implement a “moderately loose” monetary policy, increase social financing and reduce interest rates “at the right time”.

The Coalition of Filipino Commuters (CFC) asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to ensure consistent application of government-mandated discounts for students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities across all digital ride-hailing platforms, or transport networking companies (TNCs).
This is in response to numerous reports from concerned passengers and a surge of social media posts indicating that current ride-hailing services in the Philippines — including Grab, InDrive, Angkas, Maxim, Joyride and MOVE IT— are implementing these discounts in various means.
Some platforms allegedly fail to offer the discounts on their apps altogether, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the law and an exploitation of commuters, the group said.
The CFC said the lack of standardization and oversight in discount implementation makes it more challenging for Filipino students, senior citizens and PWD commuters to access the discount.
“Furthermore, the inconsistency in the implementation not only hampers the intended financial relief but also complicates the verification process, potentially leading to fraudulent claims that could adversely affect driver earnings,” CFC said.
As digital ride-hailing continues to gain traction in the Philippines, the CFC emphasized the urgent need for the LTFRB to scrutinize all ride-hailing platforms meticulously.
“By spearheading the standardization of discount applications, the LTFRB can ensure equitable access to mandated discounts and uphold the rights of Filipino commuters,” it said.

Despite this progress, the transport sector in Asia is still confronted with roadblocks to achieving the sustainable development goals, said Batan.
Batan noted, however, that increased awareness about climate crisis may have potentially led to the dramatic increase by 93 percent in 2024 of the Asia Pacific region’s cli-

OKADA Manila, a five-star integrated resort, is stepping up to meet the challenge of sustainability head-on by embracing innovative solutions that reduce environmental impact.
The company said that as part of its commitment to a greener future, it is replacing single-use plastic bottles with more sustainable alternative: high-quality, filtered water bottled directly within the property.
“We are elevating our waste management protocols through the Okada Green Heart program. This bold move proves that we can prioritize the planet while still delivering a premium experience to our guests,” said Okada Manila president and chief operating officer Byron Yip.
“Okada Manila is playing its part in building a better, greener tomorrow. Through our own water filtration and bottling system, we are significantly reducing the demand for single-use plastics,” Yip said.
Okada Manila can produce 1,000 bottles of water per hour, all served in reusable glass bottles. This sustainable approach eliminates the use of approximately 2 million single-use plastic bottles annually.
The initiative was made possible through a partnership with Nordaq, a Swedish company known for its state-of-the-art water filtration technology.

COLLECTIVE action across the Asia-Pacific region is crucial for sustainability, inclusivity and innovation amid climate change, economic inequality and the rapid pace of technological transformation.
This was emphasized in the public symposium on “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper”, which was hosted by the Philippine APEC Study Center Network (PASCN) of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS).
The event brought together policymakers, educators and regional experts from various sectors. It provided a platform for dialogue on overcoming regional challenges and building resilience through crosssectoral collaboration.
Dr. Jikyeong Kang, president of the Asian Institute of Management, highlighted the economic importance and expanding global influence of the Asia-Pacific region. “Many of us think that [prosperity] would be a very ambitious goal, given that more than 13 percent of the 117 million [Filipinos still live] in poverty. However, there are opportunities for upward mobility,” she said. Kang highlighted the role of digital technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain, in reshaping value chains and creating new economic prospects. However, she said these advancements should prioritize equity and inclusion to ensure that the benefits of progress reach all sectors of society.

A new study from the Ateneo de Manila University highlights the persistent challenges preventing widespread adoption of rooftop solar power (RTSP) in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Conducted by Department of Economics Profv. in Vietnam and $0.06 or P3.50) n Malaysia. This makes the potential longterm savings from RTSP its biggest selling point for many households.
The Philippines has some of the highest electricity rates in Southeast Asia—as high as $0.20 or about P11.50 per kilowatt-hour on average, compared to as low as $0.08 or P4.50
Homeowners also recognize that solar energy contributes to environmental protection by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, helping combat the effects of climate change. Overall, the respondents generally viewed RTSP as a sound longterm investment, with added advan-
tages such as increased property value and enhanced roof durability.
The study says, however, that upfront cost of installing solar panels remains a major hurdle to public adoption. A home RTSP setup could easily go for well over $1,700 (P100,000), equivalent to more than half a year’s salary for minimum wage workers. Many households are unsure if this initial expense is justified by long-term financial and environmental returns.

nology, engineering, arts, math) curriculum.
With a purposive and well-designed STEAM curriculum, experiential tools to test and hone students’ skills, assessments to measure performance, and continuous professional development programs for teachers, Filipino learners can fully realize their potential and become more equipped and STEAM-strong.
All these are offered by FEI, a multinational organization known for its innovative, technology-based educational solutions and services, and a sister company of Rex Education, a leading academic publisher in the country.
On October 11, FEI and REX underscored their commitment in a special program to address the challenges of providing better support for Filipino learners in STEAM education as they prepare to become future-ready citizens of a digital, technology-driven world.
COURSERA, Inc. (NYSE: COUR), one of the world’s leading online learning platforms, has revealed its annual learner trends for the Philippines, drawing insights from over 2.5 million registered learners.
This year, the Philippines showed an increase of 21% in the total number of learners on Coursera, highlighting the ambition and commitment of Filipinos to upskill and stay competitive in this rapidly evolving global workforce. Two key trends emerged in 2024: an unprecedented demand for GenAI learning and a growing preference for role-specific content to prepare for specific jobs.
According to Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2024, AI skills have become a top hiring priority for Filipino leaders – 70% stated they wouldn’t hire candidates lacking AI skills, and 68% would prefer less experienced candidates with AI skills over more experienced ones
without them. Reflecting this shift, someone in the Philippines enrolled in GenAI content on Coursera every 15 minutes in 2024, cementing its position as a must-have skill for professionals across industries.
In the Philippines, GenAI learning saw explosive growth in 2024, with a 9X increase in enrollments. Courses such as Google AI Essentials, Generative AI for Everyone and Generative AI: Introduction and Applications led to this surge.
While foundational GenAI courses remained popular, the focus shifted toward workplace applications, showcasing a growing interest in practical uses of the technology.
Beyond AI, Filipino learners pursued diverse skills like digital marketing, project management, and data analytics, reflecting the need for versatility in today’s dynamic job market. Language learning also featured prominently, with courses like First Step Korean and Learning How
Themed Armed and
FEI and Rex Education also reaffirmed their commitment to actively support initiatives aimed at advancing the Philippine education system and further empowering Filipino learners.
“At FEI, we have made it our mission to come up with STEAM learning solutions that are relevant, needs-driven, and research- and evidence-based to respond to the ever-changing needs for innovative learning solutions,” Paras said, as he discussed the four pillars of FEI’s STEAM-STRONG programs: 1. STEAM curriculum designed to develop 21st-century skills.
to Learn underscoring the importance of personal development alongside technical and career-oriented education. Entry-level Professional Certificates, which require no prior experience or college degree, also gained traction, with over 70% of the top courses like Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere, and Foundations of Project Management tied to industry micro-credentials.
“Filipino learners embraced the future of work in 2024, prioritizing GenAI and job-aligned, mission critical skills to stay competitive in an evolving job market. Their progress amidst GenAI’s disruption shows their resilience, adaptability and drive to lead on a global stage,” said Raghav Gupta, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Coursera. “In 2025, we expect the global race toward AI literacy to further accelerate, and we remain committed to empowering Filipino learners with accessible and transformative education for success in the AI-powered world.”
2. Authentic assessment for evidence-based teaching, learning dynamics, and evaluation of students’ skills achievement.
3. Educational technology to help students and teachers familiarize themselves with the world of work.
4. Capacity building and professional development for institutions, and especially teachers, to effectively deliver these programs.
“We work closely with every partner and institution to ensure schools are ready to assist learners in their STEAM journey. We provide training and workshops to help empower teachers and instructors, enabling them to become competent STEAM enthusiasts who can, in turn, arm and equip our learners,” Paras added. In his keynote, REX CEO Don Timothy Buhain reflected on the Philippines’ low PISA ranking, calling it “a challenge for all of us” and prompting the audience to consider these vital questions: How are we teaching STEAM in our schools? Are we truly giving our learners all the tools and support they need to succeed in the real world?
“This is a conversation we need to have, and I am happy we are here as part of the solution. We will do more,” Buhain assured.
“With FEI’s guidance, our STEAM offerings have been significantly enhanced, enabling us to better meet the needs of our learners. For us at REX, FEI is family—an integral contributor to the symphony of learning solutions we have developed over the years. This relationship grows stronger every day as we approach our 75th year of nurturing Filipino learners,” Buhain said. These needs have only increased in the 21st century, with the introduction of digital learning technologies fundamentally transforming how people learn and interact with information. This transformation underscores the importance of technology—a core component of STEAM—in ensuring young people’s successful participation in all spheres of life.
In line with this, PISA has introduced in its ninth cycle a new, innovative domain: Learning in a Digital World, which assesses students’ ability to learn and thrive in digital environments alongside its usual evaluations of core skills in math and science. FEI and Rex Education’s STEAM-STRONG initiative aims to help improve Filipino learners’ performance in PISA and prepare them for a digital, technology-driven future.
AMID the increasing social media activity of young Filipinos, leading fiber broadband and technology provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. has launched an advocacy campaign that advances digital literacy and privacy awareness among school children. Through its Corporate Governance and Data Privacy (CGDP) Group, Converge introduced its Project PIGLET (Privacy Integration through Guided Learning of Emerging Technologies), which intends to educate learners on the importance of protecting their personal information online.
To kickstart the initiative, Converge tied up with its neighboring primary school Francisco Legaspi Memorial School (FLMS) in Pasig to engage its pupils in Grades 2 to 6 in a child-friendly discussion on digital literacy and responsible online behavior.
“The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness about the potential risks in the internet since children nowadays are already given access to gadgets and social media. We believe it is essential to start educating kids to be more vigilant from an early age, both at home and in school, to help them avoid falling victim to these threats,” said Converge SVP and Corporate Compliance and Data Protection Officer Atty. Laurice Esteban-Tuason.
During the launch, Converge hosted a storytelling session for the pupils, along with their parents and teachers.

With the help of Captain Conrad, the Astro Kids successfully defeated the monsters in the story, guiding the participants to be cautious and not to easily trust individuals who seem overly friendly in cyberspace. Additionally, the students were encouraged to inform their parents or teachers about such incidents of potential identity theft, fraudulent schemes, and misinformation.
“The technology is constantly evolving, and our call is for all of us to be aware and vigilant as we navigate all these. We hope that the lesson we impart through this program is a step to a safer online and digital experience for all of us,” added Esteban-Tuason.
Next year, Converge plans to explore other approaches to engage students at other academic levels and visit more schools throughout the country to spread the campaign.
Converge has been actively striving to help foster safe and secure online spaces for Filipinos. In 2022, Converge collaborated with UK-based child abuse watchdog Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to combat the distribution of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse.

ALIBABA Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has been recently named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Public Cloud Platforms Q4 2024 report. Alibaba Cloud believes this designation recognizes its depth of its cloud and AI offerings and strategy, its significant global presence, as well as the ability to provide its global customers with a wide range of products and services. This is the first time Alibaba Cloud has been recognized as a Leader among other significant public cloud platform providers in this report.
Alibaba Cloud is named one of four leaders among nine global vendors evaluated in Forrester’s report, with the 2nd highest scores in the current offering and strategy categories. The report states that Alibaba Cloud showed its capacity for AI innovation with homegrown AI models, breadth of foundation model choices, and model-as-aservice (MaaS) innovation. The report also states that the core infrastructure and model-as-a-service capabilities enable Alibaba Cloud to provide a major model repository for AI across China.
“Alibaba has upped the ante on serverless beyond AI, packaging its powerful cloud-native infrastructure into more accessible offerings for both developers and operators, with data and analytics as a stand out,” said Forrester in the report. “Alibaba is a good fit for Chinese-based enterprises or international corporations requiring cloud scale across APAC and parts of Africa, Europe, and Latin America,” the report added.
The Forrester report is a 30-criterion evaluation of the nine most significant public cloud platform providers. Each provider is evaluated on the strengths of their current offerings, strategy and market presence. Alibaba Cloud has achieved the highest possible assessment score (5.0 out of 5.0) in 17 criteria, including database, data integration and governance
services, container and Kubernetes services, serverless/FaaS services, compute, IoT, storage services as well as AI development services.
“Expanding our cloud-native infrastructure and AI capabilities in the public cloud space to better support our clients is a top priority. We are honored to be recognized by Forrester for our efforts in this critical area,” said Jingren Zhou, Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.
“To address the increasing demands of AI, we are dedicated to continuously enhancing our ability to provide accessible, scalable, and reliable cloud products and AI applications to our customers.”
At Apsara Conference 2024, Alibaba Cloud’s annual flagship event hosted in September, Alibaba Cloud unveiled a revamped full-stack infrastructure designed to meet the growing demands for robust AI computing.
It also released over 100 of its newly launched large language models, Qwen
2.5, to the global open-source community. Qwen, Alibaba Cloud’s proprietary large language model, has seen significant adoption since its introduction in April 2023. The Qwen models have been downloaded over 40 million times on open-source platforms such as Hugging Face and ModelScope, and have inspired the creation of more than 78,000 derivative models.
As a creator of the MaaS concept and an advocate of open source, Alibaba Cloud also built ModelScope, China’s biggest AI model community. It hosts over 10,000 models and serves more than 8 million developers.
On the global presence, Alibaba Cloud continues to expand its global reach, currently operating 85 data centers in 28 regions globally. In May 2024, Alibaba Cloud announced its plan to launch its first cloud region in Mexico, and to establish additional data centers in its key markets including Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and South Korea in the next three years.
CONTROVERSIAL content creator Rendon Labador described social media personalities as “the new celebrities.” He said that their growing role online has shaped today’s media landscape.
“Influencers are the new celebrities. That’s the reality now,” Labador told Manila Standard Entertainment during the launch of Geng Geng Network.
He shared the platform’s focus on relatable and realistic content.
“What sets D8TV apart is that we bring the reality of people’s lives to television. Mainstream media often brings false hope to our less fortunate countrymen,” Labador said in the vernacular.
“We’re visible on social media, and our followers can relate to us. That’s D8TV’s strength—showing ordinary Filipinos’ real lives and experiences while aiming to create a positive impact,” he added.
Led by Boss Toyo, the Geng Geng Network features a roster of popular content creators, including Ava Mendez, Whamos Cruz, the Tukomi Brothers, Kiko Matos, and Lai Austria
“We content creators built Geng Geng Network,” Boss Toyo said. “It’s been in the works since last year, but it has now materialized thanks to D8TV.”
The network offers a full slate of programs from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with contributions from various influencers. Boss Toyo said slots are still available for daily and weekly shows, with details to be announced soon for interested collaborators.
Asked why they chose to air on traditional free TV while mainstream media is shifting online, Boss Toyo said they wanted to reach viewers without internet access.
“Not everyone has internet, especially those in the provinces. Satellite TV can reach up to 50 million viewers without needing an internet connection. It allows us to showcase the programs we’ve worked hard to create,” he explained.
The network is currently airing shows like Bigayan na with Boss Toyo and Pinoy Pawn Stars. A lineup of upcoming shows includes OFW Diaries, Remember Me, I Heart You, MBL (Motivated Billiard League), Moto Vated, Geng Geng News, Zypher Philippines, Food Vlog, Mommy Gangster, Real Talk, Bini Rosa, and What’s Up Klasmeyts.
Geng Geng Network is now broadcasting on D8TV Channel 31, aiming to combine the strengths of social media and television for a diverse audience.
IT’S AS if Rico Yan ’s charisma was reborn when we met Alfy Yan – the trending social media boy because of his uncanny resemblance to his late uncle – for the first time.
Manila Standard Entertainment, he said that growing up, he was well aware of the showbiz legacy his family carried.
The 20-year-old athlete, Rico Yan’s nephew through his mother, Geraldine Yan-Tueres, has signed with Viva Artists Agency (VAA), taking his first step in continuing what his late
Alfy shared how his family has been fully supportive of his decision to enter the
“I always hear so much about my uncle, the movies he did, everything he achieved. It’s cool to have something like that in our family,” he said, noting that among his late uncle’s stands out as his personal favorite.
Alfy admitted that he didn’t grasp the full extent of the former matinee idol’s impact until
“It’s shocking that even now, people still talk about him. I didn’t realize how big his influence was. I guess there’s some pressure, but it’s also heartwarming to see the support continuing to this day,” he added.
Joining showbiz inevitably means opening up one’s life to public scrutiny, but Alfy is ready for the challenges.
“I think I’m prepared for it. It’s all about mindset and how I handle comments,” he said. He is also focused on finding his footing in the industry. “I’m just trying to get a feel for how it is. Like my uncle, I’m starting with commercials while studying. It’s about testing the waters.”
Alfy’s entry into showbiz was partly guided by Claudine Barretto, Rico’s former girlfriend and long-time screen partner. During a gathering with Rico’s family, Claudine suggested the idea to Alfy. Initially hesitant, Alfy later warmed up to the thought of doing commercials and brand ambassador work. Claudine introduced him to Viva’s Vic del Rosario, leading to his signing with the agency. Recalling her conversation with Alfy, Claudine said, “I asked him, ‘Aside from baseball, what are you into? Do you want to join showbiz?’ He wasn’t fully into it at first, but things happened quickly
For Claudine, Alfy’s foray into showbiz feels like a continuation of Rico’s journey. She described the enthusiasm from Rico’s fans and family, saying, “Many people still feel Rico’s absence. When Alfy decided to join, it was as if the fans, including Rico’s grandmother, found renewed hope. I feel like Alfy is the only one who can continue what Rico started.”

THE Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) has expressed its gratitude to Jose Mari Chan , known as the “King of Pinoy Christmas Carols,” for his continued support of the group’s socio-civic and charity initiatives.
Chan, an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and businessman, has been actively involved in FFCCCII’s programs for over four decades. His contributions include disaster relief efforts, free medical missions, scholarship grants, the construction of rural public schools, and support for Filipino-Chinese volunteer fire brigades, according to FFCCCII president Cecilio Pedro
“We have been building classrooms for the last 35 to 40 years. As of now, we have built 6,500 classrooms. Many schools are in dire need of facilities, and we step in to help,” Pedro said.
Pedro also noted Chan’s involvement with the Ateneo scholarship foundation, which has supported students by offsetting tuition costs.
“This initiative has been instrumental in helping students, with around 21 percent of the university’s population benefiting from scholarships over the years,” he said.
During the recent series of typhoons, FFCCCII and the FilipinoChinese Friendship Foundation allocated P60 million to P65 million for rice donations distributed to affected areas, including Bicol, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Metro Manila.
As the holiday season approaches, Pedro said FFCCCII is committed to continuing its aid for Filipino families in need, emphasizing the spirit of bayanihan.
FFCCCII also partnered with the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd) to assist typhoon victims. Pedro and FFCCCII Public Information Committee Chairman Wilson Lee Flores handed over a donation to SPEEd President Salve Asis during a Christmas charity event.
The partnership has previously included outreach programs, such as a two-day medical and dental mission in Nueva Ecija and Aurora provinces.
Pedro acknowledged the role of media professionals in promoting positivity. “Media personnel are heroes. You bring hope and good news, spreading happiness to many Filipinos,” he said. Pedro, who is also the president and CEO of Lamoiyan Corporation, makers of Hapee Toothpaste and Dazz Dishwashing products, has long been connected to the entertainment industry. Lamoiyan’s past celebrity endorsers include Ruffa Gutierrez, Lea Salonga, Angel Locsin, and the late German Moreno

AMONG music enthusiasts, the Hard Rock Cafe serves as an establishment that not only offers delectable food and drinks but also celebrates music.
With its extensive collection of memorabilia owned by iconic figures in music spanning various genres, along with a reputation for holding live music performances from both established and budding artists, Hard Rock Cafe has cemented itself as a place that guarantees fun and entertainment for its customers.
As part of its move to expand its presence in the Philippines, the cafe has opened its third branch in the thriving area of Clark, Pampanga, at the Hann Casino Resort.
Taking on a contemporary pop design, Hard Rock Cafe Clark is a 125-seater establishment that features a wide array of music memorabilia from renowned artists, ranging from the rock band Led Zeppelin to singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, decorating its walls.
Speaking with Manila
Standard Life during the cafe’s opening on Dec. 7, Hard Rock International Vice President for Business and Development in Franchise Operations Global Tom Perez shared that the branch in Clark’s contemporary design aimed to capture Hard Rock’s youthful charm despite being a 53-year-old brand.
“I think what you’ll see in this cafe is that it’s very
different from the ones in Manila and Makati. This is the new look and feel of Hard Rock—very contemporary, very clean,” said Perez.
Compared to the previous branches, Hard Rock Cafe Clark notably has less music memorabilia which Perez explained was because they wanted its showcased collection to be less overwhelming, only having key pieces decorating its walls.
He added, “It’s just part of the way we want to do things now. A lot cleaner, a lot crisper.”
The Clark branch also features a stage above the bar, which has already been seen in some of its international establishments.
Apart from the usual collectible merchandise available at its Rock Shop, there are also a few items available that
are exclusively sold in the branch such as shirts with prints featuring Clark, Pampanga, and its cultural offerings.
Customers will also be able to enjoy an extensive menu of classic American cuisine such as pepperoni flatbread, tupelo chicken tenders, caesar salad shooters, and many others. Some of its cocktail offerings include the Hurricane, Electric Blues, and the Rockin’ Fresh Rita.
With Hard Rock Cafe Clark aiming to make a positive impact to Central Luzon’s hospitality and entertainment sector through its iconic offerings to guests within the area, Perez said that customers will be able to experience the charm that has led to the brand’s success throughout the decades, making them want to come back for more.
“One of the big mistakes that people make is that Hard Rock Cafe is only going to be about hard rock. It’s not. We can have K-pop, hard rock, soft rock. In some tropical countries, we have bachata, Latin, and reggae. It’s all about music,” he said.
The official opening of the branch in Clark saw a cake-cutting ceremony in lieu of a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony as well as exciting performances from the local dance troupe WTG Cultural Dancers, the Hard Rock
and
