HOUSE SUPER PANEL’S NEXT FOCUS: HIGH POWER RATES
SALCEDA: P206B IN ‘DISALLOWED EXPENSES’ FIRST AGENDA
By Maricel V. Cruz
ASUPER committee of the House of Representatives will shift its focus from bringing down food prices to finding solutions to high electricity costs once session resumes next month, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda said.
“We will soon convene a Murang Kuryente Super Committee,” said Salceda, presiding cochairman of the Murang Pagkain Super Committee, also called the Quinta Committee.
The Quinta Committee was

The Office of Civil Defense Region 6 is consulting with Phivolcs and PAGASA to monitor the situation and assess the recommendation.
The possible expansion could affect nine additional barangays,

leading to concerns from the La Castellana local government, which is already facing depleted resources for evacuees. One solution being considered is relocating evacuees to tent cities in Himamaylan City.
Phivolcs said these measures are precautionary and do not indicate an immediate disaster.
Salceda said this was in line with Speaker Martin Romualdez’s instructions to go after price excesses in the power sector next.
“The most obvious (issue to be tackled first) is the Energy Regulatory Commission finding of some P206 billion in disallowed public relations, advertising, and other expenses in the 2016-2020 period, when the NGCP collected in excess of allowed annual revenues.”
The ERC, Salceda said, “already released this finding late last year.”
“It’s time for action now,” he added.
In the distribution sector, when utilities collect in excess of allowed revenues, they usually re -
fund the excess collections without much issue, Salceda said.
The transmission sector, which he described as a national monopoly, should have no issue doing the same.
“The Speaker has also given instructions to study windfall taxes on excessive profits by power sector participants and plow such resources into consumer refunds and Pantawid Kuryente,” Salceda said.
As of March 2024, based on data culled by Statista, the Philippines had the second highest household electricity rate among ASEAN countries at $0.19 per kilowatt-hour, next only to Singapore at $0.24 per kilowatt-hour.

SERIOUS SECURITY THREATS DETECTED DURING HOLIDAYS’
By Charles Dantes and Joel Zurbano
The Philippine National Police said it has not detected any serious security threats even as it remained on heightened alert nationwide to safeguard the public during the holiday season. PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said: We are maintaining our active security stance to prevent any security breaches. So far, we have not monitored any serious threats to security.”
The heightened alert, implemented on December 15, will continue through January to cover Christmas, New Year’s celebrations, and events like the annual Traslacion of the Black Nazarene on January 9. Around 40,000 officers have been deployed to secure key areas, including transportation hubs, churches, and commercial establishments.
Police assistance desks have been set up nationwide, and K-9 units are inspecting baggage at ports.
The Philippine Coast Guard likewise placed all districts, stations, and sub-stations on heightened alert from Dec. 20, 2024, to Jan. 3, 2025 to manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the holidays. As part of “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Pasko 2024,” the PCG mobilized 2,736 frontline personnel nationwide to ensure safety and efficiency in port operations. Meanwhile, the MMDA said it will suspend the operation of the Pasig River Ferry Service on December 24, 25, and 30, and on January 1, 2025 – all declared holidays.
The ferry will also operate for only half a day on December 31, a special non-working holiday. The PRFS serves an average of 300-440 passengers a day. Currently, the ferry service has 17 boats. Rides are still free for commuters.
The agency recorded 22 volcanic quakes at Kanlaon Volcano over a 24-hour period, nearly two weeks after it had an explosive eruption that displaced thousands in Negros Island.
Based on its latest bulletin issued yesterday, Phivolcs reported 22 volcanic quakes from 12 a.m. Friday until 12 a.m. Saturday State volcanologists said Kanlaon’s activity continues to indicate “intensified unrest” under Alert Level 3. Rex Espiritu and Maricel Cruz
DSWD SEEKS DONATIONS FOR ‘WALANG GUTOM’
By Maricel V. Cruz
SOCIAL Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian called for food donations from restaurants and fast foods, as well as from individuals who are willing to render volunteer service, in the newly-opened Walang Gutom Kitchen.
“We encourage organizations and individuals who want to help fight hunger to just go to Walang Gutom Kitchen at the Nasdake Building in Pasay City to be our volunteer server for the day,” Gatchalian said. Launched on December 16, the Walang Gutom Kitchen is the DSWD’s latest innovative program
that offers holistic solutions to homelessness and hunger. Its primary clientele are children, individuals, and families in street situations and other Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger. Apart from addressing involuntary hunger, Gatchalian said the kitchen will also prevent food wastage.
“First of all, we want to suppress hunger. But where will we get the food? Since this soup kitchen is also a food bank, this is where hotels, restaurants, and fast food stores drop their excess sales and food they did not consume that day,” he said. “Instead of just throwing food away and wasting them, now they

have a place to put them and donate them where the DSWD will distribute them and serve them to our compatriots who are experiencing hunger, families who living on the streets, individuals and youth experiencing temporary hunger,” he added.
Gatchalian said the DSWD will open more soup kitchens nationwide to realize President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s vision of a hunger-free Philippines.
So far, Nestle Philippines has donated 300 pieces of 1-kg pack powdered chocolate while Bossing Nation has given 5 boxes of dishwashing liquid.
BILL FILED TO BAN FIRECRACKERS SALE
By Joel E. Zurbano
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian urged the public to consider the potential tragedies caused by firecrackers and fireworks during the holidays, particularly during New Year revelry.
Gatchalian is proposing a ban on the sale, distribution, and use of firecrackers amid the growing trend of online sales of these products and other pyrotechnic devices.
This month of December and days before it ended is a perennial period for fire safety as it usually registers a high number of fire cases mostly caused by malfunctioning fireworks and firecracker-related incidents.
Given the increasing tendency of consumers to make purchases online,
Gatchalian said the government needs legislation that prohibits the sale and distribution of firecrackers before this becomes a serious safety concern.
Gatchalian made the proposal following reports of the rise in online sales of oversized or “killer” firecrackers.
The senator has previously filed Senate Bill 1144, which, if passed, will be known as the Firecrackers Prohibition Act. This bill aims to
amend Republic Act 7183, officially titled “An Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, Distribution, and Use of Firecrackers and Other Pyrotechnic Devices.”
Gatchalian pointed out that Executive Order No. 28, which regulates and controls the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices, has not been fully effective in preventing injuries related to firecracker use.
The proposed legislation would prohibit the sale, distribution, possession, and use of any firecracker or pyrotechnic device, although it does provide an exception.
Entities needing to use fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices must obtain a special permit from the Philippine National Police - Fire and Explosives Office, and any fireworks display must be conducted by profes-
sionals with the necessary skills and knowledge.
The Department of Trade and Industry-Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (DTI-FTEB) meanwhile intensified its monitoring of uncertified fireworks in preparation for the New Year festivities, FTEB Director Gino Mallari said during a media forum in Makati City on Friday.
Mallari’s statement came in response to appeals from legal firecracker manufacturers for stricter enforcement against the sale of uncertified products, which they say impacts their livelihood.
“We can issue cease and desist orders for the manufacturers and then I believe there is a special law enforced by the PNP (Philippine National Police) with criminal aspect for violations,” he said.
COMELEC DISMISSES PLEA TO DISQUALIFY QUIBOLOY’S CANDIDACY
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) has dismissed a petition seeking to disqualify suspected child abuser Apollo Quiboloy from running in the May 2025 midterm elections.
In a 14-page decision promulgated on Dec. 18, the Comelec First Division ruled that the petitioner, labor leader Sonny Matula, failed to provide sufficient evidence to cancel
the detained religious leader’s certificate of candidacy (COC).
“Even if this Commission (First Division) were to apply the rules on liberality and decide based on the merits of this Petition, the grounds relied upon by the Petitioner for the disqualification of Respondent and the cancellation of his COC are incorrect and without factual and legal basis,” the decision stated, released
Friday night.
The ruling also noted procedural lapses in the filing of the petition, emphasizing that a petition to declare a candidate as a nuisance cannot be combined with other grounds for a separate remedy.
Matula had argued that Quiboloy’s nomination by the Workers’ and Peasants’ Party was invalid due to the unauthorized signatory of his
Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance (CONA).
However, the Comelec ruled that this does not constitute “material misrepresentation” under election laws.
Quiboloy withdrew his CONA on Oct. 21, and opted to run as an independent senatorial candidate.
He is currently detained at Camp Crame in Quezon City, facing human trafficking and child abuse charges.
MAGALONG, BAGUIO MEDIA GROUP SIGN PACT ON BURNHAM PARK MEDIA CAMP
By Dave Leprozo
BAGUIO City Mayor Benjamin
Magalong and the City Environment and Parks Management Office signed a memorandum of agreement with the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) allowing the media organization to adopt the picnic grove of Burnham Park.
Magalong and assistant CEPM Officer Marivic Empizo signed the MOA with BCBC president Thomas Picana and was witnessed by the club’s business manager Rizaldy Comanda.
The nearly 700-square meter picnic grove is used as a “media camp” especially during Holy Week.
Earlier, Picana expressed elation over the prospect of signing the MOA and is looking forward to funding the upgrade of the area used during media activities.
“Now we can start working on the possible funding of the camp’s

Picana said that the club will source out P500,000 for the upgrade of the area, where it will introduce landscaping, lighting, and additional chairs and tables.
Magalong said that the city will help fund the upgrade of the area, while divulging that it is included in the general improvements under the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority or TIEZA.
Magalong added that it will be part of the P700 million the TIEZA earmarked to improve the city’s centerpiece park but it will be the last phase of the development plan the agency conceived.
IN BRIEF
your time here is very productive. Our relation with your country is as strong as ever been and I think we will continue. We keep going and we have begun many things as well just during my time here as President,” Mr. Marcos said during a farewell call by Saudi Arabia Ambassador Hisham
Abdullah Alqahtani on Thursday.
“So we would like to continue and make even deeper and more involved together with the kingdom and hopefully we can expand on all of the things that we’re already doing. These all happened under your watch,” he said.
The President said the discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud and the other officials tackled some of the most important matters. He stressed the “very good partnership” created between the two countries. He acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s position in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which, he said, was helpful in the peace efforts in Mindanao. For his part, Alqahtani thanked the President for meeting him prior to his departure. The Saudi envoy made huge success in his efforts for three and a half years to make the relations between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia even stronger.
ADMIN’S GREEN PROJECTS TO ATTRACT INVESTORS —SOLON
THE administration’s thrust toward the development of green power— particularly of wind, solar and other variable renewable energy (VRE) sources—would be a new magnet for investments, Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte said on Saturday. Villafuerte issued the statement in the wake of the recent inauguration of the Manila office of the Danish firm Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), which has committed to invest an initial $30 million or about P1.7 billion for the preparation and predevelopment activities for the first of its four offshore and onshore wind power projects in the Philippines. He said the first of COP’s four projects in the Philippines is the $3-billion, 1,000 megawatt (MW) offshore wind (OSW) farm that the Danish investor is putting up on San Miguel Bay in his home province of Camarines Sur.
Once up and running hopefully before President Marcos leaves office in 2028, Villafuerte said this OSW farm on San Miguel Bay will become the first and biggest wind power project in the country and that will employ an estimated 2,500 people.
The Department of Energy (DOE) has pointed to the “strong interest” of private sector investors, especially from countries considered as the global leaders in offshore wind (OSW) technology such as Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom (UK). The DOE has thus far awarded 92 OSW service contracts to 38 RE developers with a potential capacity of 66 GW combined. Maricel V. Cruz

THE Supreme Court (SC) has received 25 hectares of land from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in Bambang, Bulacan that will serve as the new site of the judicial complex. In a media interview on Friday, Justice Jose Midas Marquez said the Bulacan property is bigger than the area inTaguig City where the SC initially planned to build the complex. The SC is hoping to start the construction by 2025.
The property is part of the concession agreement between the government through the DOTr and San Miguel Aerocity, Inc. (SMAI), where the latter will donate 100 hectares to the government to comprise the Government Center Land Area in Bulacan.
The high court entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the DOTR and SMAI on Sep. 19. Under the MOA, the DOTr shall transfer the property allocated to the Supreme Court.

ELECTION SUPERVISOR IN SULU ESCAPES DRIVE-BY SHOOTING
APROVINCIAL election supervisor in Sulu was unscathed in a drive-by shooting here Saturday but his elder brother was wounded.
Police identified the victim as Nasser Amil Asiri, 57, the elder brother of Provincial Election Supervisor Vidzfar Amil Julie, 51.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. in Sitio Villa Sta. Maria, Barangay Sta. Maria.
Julie said they were traveling home from Zamboanga International Airport when the two suspects on a motorcycle pulled
alongside their vehicle and opened fire.
“I know I am the target of the gunmen,” Julie said in an interview, suggesting that the attack may be related to his work. Julie, who had just arrived from Jolo, was driving his sports utility vehicle with Asiri on the passenger seat. Asiri fetched him from the air -
port. The Zamboanga City Police Office has launched a manhunt operation to arrest those responsible for the shooting.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) condemned the attack. Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia said Julie was declared safe while his sibling was in critical condition after the shooting.
The poll officer and his sibling were inside a car when they were ambushed by still unidentified suspects.
In a Viber message to the media, Garcia said that “no words are enough to condemn
this treacherous act of violence against our people.”
“What is more gruesome and unforgivable is when a loved one is caught in the crossfire so to speak. We are not yet prepared to cry hopelessness but a call for immediate action from authorities is strongly demanded,” he added.
An election officer in Lanao del Norte was killed last month.
Garcia said he will transfer election officers who were receiving death threats to areas “less inconvenient” for them to ensure their safety. Vito Barcelo
GARIN WARNS PUBLIC ON RISING TUBERCULOSIS CASES IN MANILA
By Maricel V. Cruz
HOUSE Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin warned the public to take extra precautions after the doctors’ group diagnosed 1,280 residents with tuberculosis (TB) in Tondo, Manila.
Garin made the statement after the Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF) revealed that a huge number of residents in Tondo were infected with TB.
“This is alarming. The gov -
ernment must take action against the increasing number of tuberculosis in the country,” the former health secretary pointed out. The Iloilo First District Representative also cited that such was also seen in Iloilo during the Bantay Kalusugan, a medical mission initiated by Garin.
Amid the increasing number of TB cases, the lady solon expressed concern as the medicines for TB are always out of
stock in public medical facilities which leads to inaccessible healthcare.
“It is worrying that there is a lack of medicine for this type of disease. Proper distribution and an organized drug delivery system are needed to ensure that Filipinos get enough medicine,” Garin stressed, adding that such diseases is preventable and curable.

HERBOSA SAYS PHILHEALTH SYSTEM ‘BROKEN,’
DEPARTMENT of Health (DOH)
Secretary Teodoro Herbosa on Saturday said the “broken” system of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth) needs to be fixed.
In a meeting with officials with St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City as he kicked off this year’s hospital rounds for the holiday season, Herbosa quoted by ABS-CBN News, said: “As chair of the Philhealth board, we’re really trying to fix this problem. The system is broken.”
The DOH chief slammed Philhealth for not using its funds to settle its arrears with St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. He also cited a supposed online petition that he asked the hospital’s doctors not to support. “The petition wants me to give the money back to PhilHealth. Teka muna. Eh ‘di ba ang ginagawa ng Philhealth hindi naman binabayad sa utang sa inyo, nilalagay nila sa bangko. Tama ba yun? ‘Di ba mali yun? Zinero nila, eh ang dami nang pera niyo sa bangko eh. Bayaran niyo muna utang niyo sa St. Luke’s,” he said. “P800 million na utang sa inyo? That’s a lot of money.
That’s almost a billion pesos and you’re the private sector you don’t get subsidy unlike our government hospitals
dividuals worldwide contracted TB in 2023.
TB is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that most often affects the lungs. It spreads through the air when people with TB cough, sneeze or spit, WHO said.
Based on the data of the US Agency for International Development, the estimated TB incidence in the Philippines in 2021 was 741,000. An estimated 61,000 people died from the said disease.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED
[they] get a subsidy,” the DOH chief added. Herbosa emphasized that Philhealth’s system needs fix -
ing and that the state health insurer’s funds should be utilized properly as it “belongs to the Filipino people.”

NEW ZEALAND DONATES P17M FOR RED CROSS TYPHOON RESPONSE
THE New Zealand government has provided NZD500,000 (approximately P17 million) to support the ongoing multicyclone response of the Philippine Red Cross.
“New Zealand stands in solidarity with the Philippines, reaffirming its commitment and offering support during these challenging times,” the New Zealand Embassy said in a statement issued Friday.
“Our enduring partnership reflects our shared resilience, compassion, and mutual aid values,” it added.
The embassy said the new funding is part of its continuing collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The United Nations Philippines earlier said at least $20.1 million or P1.17 billion is needed to support the urgent and lifesaving needs of communities severely affected by the series of typhoons that struck the country this year. In recent months, the Philippines endured a series of strong tropical cyclones, placing pressure on local communities, especially in Bicol and Central Luzon.

US CONGRESS PASSES BILL TO AVERT GOV’T SHUTDOWN
THE US Congress averted a Christmastime government shutdown early Saturday after weeks of tense negotiations that went down to the wire, passing a bill to fund federal agencies through mid-March.
With the midnight deadline already expired by minutes, senators dropped normal procedure to fast-track the package to a vote, halting government shutdown preparations and saving Christmas for more than 800,000 workers at risk of being sent home without pay.
“It’s good news that the bipartisan approach in the end prevailed... It’s a good outcome for America and the American people,” Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor.
The Democrats run the Senate, so there was never much doubt that the funding package would get a rubber stamp after the party was crucial in helping the Republican majority in the House pass the bill earlier in the day.
But with senators often dragging their feet over complex legislation, there were fears that the funding fight might spill into next week.
That would have meant non-essential operations winding up, with up to 875,000 workers furloughed and as many as 1.4 million more required to work without pay.
Congress’s setting of government budgets is always a fraught task, with both chambers closely divided between Republicans and Democrats.
President-elect Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, his incoming “efficiency czar,” created much of the drama this time around by pressuring Republicans in an 11th-hour intervention to renege on a funding bill they had painstakingly agreed with Democrats.
Two subsequent efforts to find compromise fell short, leaving Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson at the last chance saloon as he spent much of Friday huddling with aides to find a way to keep government agencies running.
If the funding bill had failed, non-essential
government functions would have been put on ice. Employees in key services like law enforcement would have continued working but would only have been paid once government functions were back up.
Many parks, monuments, and national sites would have closed at a time when millions of visitors are expected.
Lawmakers avoided all that holiday-season pain by funding the government until March 14 in a package that includes $110 billion in disaster aid and financial relief for farmers.
It is essentially the same as a bill that failed miserably in a vote Thursday — except without a two-year suspension of the country’s selfimposed borrowing limit demanded by Trump.
The influence of Musk, the world’s richest man, over the Republicans — and his apparent sway with Trump — has become a focus for Democratic attack, with questions raised over how an unelected citizen can wield so much power.
There is growing anger even among Republicans over Musk’s interference after he trashed the original funding agreement in a blizzard of posts — many of them wildly inaccurate — on his social media platform X. AFP
16 WOUNDED AS ISRAEL HIT BY MISSILE FIRED FROM YEMEN
A PROJECTILE fired from Yemen struck Israel’s commercial hub of Tel Aviv early Saturday, wounding 16 people, the military and emergency service providers said, the second such attack within days.
Israel’s military said it had failed to intercept the projectile, which struck a district of Tel Aviv municipality, forcing many residents to leave their homes.
Yemen’s Huthi rebels later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it used a ballistic missile and was directed at“a military target of the Israeli enemy.”
The Iranian-backed Huthis have repeatedly launched missile attacks against Israel in solidarity with Palestinians since the war in Gaza began more than a year ago, most of which have been intercepted.
In return, Israel has struck multiple targets in Yemen, including ports and energy facilities in areas controlled by
the Huthis.
“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in central Israel, one projectile launched from Yemen was identified and unsuccessful interception attempts were made,” the Israeli military said on its Telegram channel.
Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s emergency medical service, said 16 people were lightly injured.
“I was at home and heard a loud explosion. I immediately went to the scene and saw significant blast damage to nearby buildings,” medic Yosef Kourdi was quoted as saying in a statement released by MDA.
“MDA teams provided medical care to 16 individuals who were mildly injured by glass shards from shattered windows in nearby buildings due to the impact of the strike,”the statement said.

alert had sounded just before 4 a.m.
“Then there was a big ball of fire in the sky,”he said.“I didn’t even manage to get up and get dressed to go out.”
An AFP photographer reported that many residents in the vicinity of the strike had to leave their homes, carrying only the essentials.
AFP photographs showed debris from the bedroom of a house in the area hit by the projectile, as police swiftly cordoned off the neighborhood.
Noa Mosseri, whose apartment was also damaged, told AFP she too heard the missile alert.
“We were very lucky because we didn’t have time to get to a safe place. Within seconds there was a boom. We managed to get out and so we were not hurt,”she said.
The Huthi rebels say they are acting in support of Palestinians, and pledged in their statement on
Saturday to continue operations “until the aggression stops and the siege on the Gaza Strip is lifted.”
The strike came just two days after the rebels fired a missile at Israel that damaged a school.
Israel said that the missile had been intercepted and the school was hit by its falling debris.
Israel later struck several Huthi sites in Yemen, including in Sanaa — the first such strike in the rebel-held capital.
“The Israeli enemy targeted ports in Hodeida and power stations in Sanaa, and the Israeli aggression resulted in the martyrdom of nine civilian martyrs,” rebel leader Abdul Malik al-Huthi said in a lengthy speech broadcast by the rebels’ Al-Masira TV.
Soon after retaliating for Thursday’s attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the rebels of severe repercussions. AFP
GERMAN LEADER TO VISIT SITE OF CHRISTMAS MARKET ATTACK
GERMAN Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other politicians will Saturday visit the scene of a bloody car-ramming that targeted visitors to a Christmas fair in an old market city.
Police arrested a 50-year-old Saudi medical doctor at the site of the assault in which two people were killed and 68 injured when an SUV plowed through the festive crowd in Magdeburg on Friday night. So far police were uncertain whether the attack may have been Islamist-inspired or linked to psychological problems.
“The motives remain mysterious,”wrote the weekly Der Spiegel.
The attack came almost eight years to the day after Germany suffered its deadliest
AMAZON SAYS US STRIKE CAUSED NO DISRUPTIONS
A US strike targeting Amazon in the peak festive period extended into a second day Friday as the retail behemoth said the labor action would not affect its business.
Amazon has experienced “no disruptions at all,” a company spokeswoman told AFP. “And we aren’t anticipating any either.”
The Teamsters union on Thursday launched a strike targeting seven Amazon facilities spaced around the United States. Union officials said the stoppage continued Friday at the same locales.
“When they (Amazon) come to the table, I guess that’s when we’ll stop,”Tony Rosciglione, treasurer of Teamsters Local 804 in New York, told AFP in a phone interview from a picket line in New York City.
The union, pointing to headway made at Amazon locales by organizing drives, had set a December 15 deadline for the online retailer to enter into contract negotiations.
Amazon has long fought labor organizing campaigns, saying they favor a direct relationship with employees unimpeded by a third party. The statement from the Amazon spokeswoman pointed to wage hikes of 20 percent over the last six years to starting warehouse and transport workers, along with health and retirement benefits.
The Teamsters characterization of its status at Amazon is a “false narrative,” the Amazon spokeswoman said.
“The truth is that they were unable to get enough support from our employees and partners and have brought in outsiders to harass and intimidate our team, which is inappropriate and dangerous,” she said. AFP
1ST DRUG TREATMENT OKAYED FOR SLEEP APNEA
US REGULATORS on Friday approved the first drug treatment for sleep apnea, permitting the use of a weight-loss medication for the condition that affects millions of Americans.
“This is a major step forward for patients with obstructive sleep apnea,” US Food and Drugs Administration official Sally Seymour said in a statement announcing approval of Zepbound to treat moderate to severe sleep apnea in obese patients.
Zepbound, from drugmaker Eli Lilly, is already approved for people who are obese or overweight and have a related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.
“Zepbound works by activating receptors of hormones secreted from the intestine... to reduce appetite and food intake. By reducing body weight, studies show that Zepbound also improves OSA,” an FDA statement said.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a dangerous condition in which breathing stops intermittently while a person sleeps. Sufferers wake up repeatedly during the night because of a blocked airway, preventing them from reaching the deep, refreshing stages of slumber.
The condition is linked to a higher risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and depression.
Sleep apnea affects approximately 30 million adults in the United States, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. AFP
MYANMAR REBELS CLAIM JUNTA COMMAND CAPTURE
A MYANMAR ethnic rebel group has captured a military regional command in Rakhine state, it said, in what would be a major blow to the junta.
The Arakan Army (AA) had“completely captured”the western regional command at Ann on Friday after weeks of fighting, the group said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
Ann would be the second regional military command to fall to ethnic rebels in five months, and a huge blow to the military.
Myanmar’s military has 14 regional commands across the country with many of them currently fighting established ethnic rebel groups or newer “People’s Defence Forces” that have sprung up to battle the military’s 2021 coup.

No extremist group has claimed the latest vehicle-ramming attack to target one of Germany’s most beloved religious and cultural festivals.
Some German media pointed to the suspect’s past social media posts in which he has expressed views critical of Islam and had even warned of the “dangers” of an Islamization of Germany.
The sorrow and anger sparked by the attack, where one of those killed was a young child, was sure to inflame a heated debate on immigration and security as Germany heads for February 23 elections. AFP

From Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, over 20 countries and close to 2,000 paddlers from all over the world – both alltime highs – descended on the Palawan provincial capital for four days of action-packed competition celebrating the centennial jubilee of the world body.
Not only were the participants lured by the famed Filipino hospitality in one of the country’s top tourist attractions but also by the fact that the championships served as a major qualifying meet for the World Games where the sport was to make its debut in the 2025 edition held in Chengdu, China.
Making this all possible was the successful collaboration of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation led by Leonora “Lenlen” Escollante and Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron, who has made it his calling to transform the city into a premier Philippine sports tourism hub.
Of course, private and nongovernment institutions also greatly contributed to the success of the event, including the Tingog party-list headed by representative Yedda Romualdez.
Conscious of the lush environment in and around Puerto Princesa, Escollante and Bayron launched the “Paddle Together for Climate Action” as the overall slogan of the event.
“The ICF Dragon Boat World Championships have contributed to
our economy. Puerto Princesa will bene t from it as we invest more funds to save the planet,” Bayron stressed in an interview that was posted on the ICF website. “This will inspire the locals to work with us so we can make the city the leading sports eco-tourism destination.”
One of the most visited attractions by the foreign participants was the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP), one of the most important protected areas in the Philippines. The park features a spectacular
limestone karst landscape with one of the most complex cave systems in the world. Its highlight is an 8.2-kilometer underground river that ows directly into the sea. The lower half of the river is brackish and in uenced by ocean tides, a rare natural phenomenon.
Recognized globally, the Puerto Princesa Underground River has been declared one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 4, 1999. This recognition highlights the park’s remarkable conservation and ecological integrity.
BAYWALK
The world-class course overlooking
the Puerto Princesa Baywalk was the centerpiece of the competition, getting high marks both from no less than ICF president Thomas Konietzko of Germany and ICF Dragon Boat Committee chairman Dr. Wai-Hung Luk of Hongkong.
From the moment the participants of the ICF World Dragon Boat Championships descended at Puerto Princesa until the last day of the meet, Mayor Bayron made it a point that they would be in for a memorable, enjoyable, definitely unforgettable, and festive experience.
The Mayor’s Night held at the massive Puerto

gave the contingents from all the globe a glimpse of what to expect from the warm and cordial Palaweño hosts. They were treated to a sumptuous bu et of native cuisine and delicacies while being serenaded by the local choir on top of being entertained with a variety of colorful native dances from all over the country such as the Maglalatik, Pandanggo sa Ilaw, and Tinikling.
While the dates of the championships fell on All Saints and All Souls Day, when most Filipinos paid their respects to their departed loved ones, there was still sizeable crowds at the Puerto Princesa Baywalk course daily to inspire and root for the paddlers all four days of the meet. PINOY PADDLERS SHINE
The Philippine paddlers also greatly bene ted from Puerto Princesa hosting of the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships, bagging the overall crown with a glittering harvest of 11 gold, 20 silver and 16 bronzes.
“We practically made history every day so I am very proud of our national paddlers and how we organized this big event sanctioned by the International Canoe Federation,” Escollante pointed out.
JULIE’S BAKESHOP INSPIRES FAMILIES THROUGH FRESH BREAD
FAMILY has always been at the heart of Julie’s, the nation’s beloved neighborhood bakeshop.
From second-generation president and chief executive Joseph Gandionco, son of founder Julie Gandionco, to numerous second and third-generation franchisees managing over 600 stores nationwide, families are the driving force behind Julie’s enduring commitment to providing fresh and affordable bread for Filipinos.
The company has achieved a well-balanced network, with 55 percent of branches companyowned and 45 percent operated by franchise partners.
“The longevity of our partnerships with franchisees, some of whom have been with us for over 20 years, is a testament to our business model. With 40 years of experience and expertise, we make it easy to invest in a sustainable and reliable venture,” Gandionco said.
Julie’s offers a variety of beloved products, including Cheese Bread, Julie’s Violet Cream Loaf, Spanish Bread, Choco German, and Binangkal. The brand prides itself on maintaining quality while ensuring operational efficiencies through strategic partnerships.
The flagship branch of Julie’s is located in Banilad, Cebu, where the original snack shop concept was launched. This innovative concept has now been introduced
in selected branches throughout Cebu.
Heartwarming stories Julie’s franchisees’ stories highlight how the company fosters a thriving, multi-generational business.
In 2001, Tony Mesina and his wife Mel returned to the Philippines to build a better future for their newborn child after years of working as overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in China and Hong Kong.
“Though we had limited experience in doing business, and after consulting with our friends, we ventured into Julie’s Bakeshop because we believe that a food business is more resilient,” Mesina recalled.
Today, more than two decades since opening their first branch, Mesina oversees eight Julie’s Bakeshops in Baguio and La Trinidad, employing around 120 people. Their success has inspired the Mesina children to follow in their footsteps.
“We support and teach them the day-to-day operations, financial management, and, most importantly, people-handling skills. These are crucial for the success of the business,” he said. Creating legacies
Tronnie Paunlagui grew up familiar with the family’s bakeshop
before eventually taking over her parents’ Julie’s branch in Quezon City.
“My mom would often say that she will take care of this business for me in the meantime. She was caring for it, nurturing it so that she could pass it on to me as a legacy,” Paunlagui recounted.
After retiring early from her corporate job, Paunlagui fully immersed herself in managing the franchise.

SAYING GOODBYE TO A BELOVED RESCUED DOG NAMED GEORGY
By Desiree Carlos
THERE was a mass in her private part. It was growing and she was getting weaker as days passed. Worse, she lived on the streets, alone, where food was hard to come by. Her eyes were the saddest eyes. There seemed to be no joy or excitement at all. It seemed she had completely surrendered to hopelessness.
She was around five years old when an animal lover, Joanne Zamora, messaged Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL and asked that she be rescued. Save ALL decided to help her and another animal lover, CJ Serrano, transported her from Caloocan to the clinic.
Georgy was treated for tvt cancer. She underwent several chemotherapy sessions and got well eventually. With the help of a lot of kind-hearted humans, we were able to pay the P60,000 for her treatment for tvt cancer.
That was in 2014.
After treatment, she stayed in a Save ALL home where rescues are rehabilitated and prepared for adoption. Georgy’s eyes lit up in the home. She was no longer alone. She had sweet Sunny as playmate. Sunny was barely a year old then, a survivor of an illness-ridden pound where he contracted distemper and erlichia.
Georgy and Sunny, both survivors of cruelty and a deadly disease, found a longtime friend in each other. Save ALL admins also believe Georgy showered her love on Sunny because she most likely lost all her babies on the street. Sunny became her

CHRISTMAS is a time for joy, family, and celebration, a sentiment often shared with beloved pets. The holidays can be a wonderful time for furry friends, but it is crucial to ensure their safety and well-being amidst the festive cheer. Decorations, festive food, and increased activity can pose potential hazards for pets, so it is important to be mindful of their needs and create a safe and enjoyable Christmas for both humans and their animal companions.
Potential Dangers Lurking in the Holiday Cheer:
• Decorations: The sparkle and shine of tinsel, ornaments, and other festive decorations can be irresistible to pets. However, these seemingly harmless items can be dangerous if ingested. Pets may choke on small ornaments or experience digestive issues if they swallow tinsel or other decorations. "Christmas safety for dogs" by Purina advises keeping decorations out of reach, especially those that are small or easily breakable. Opting for pet-friendly alternatives like fabric ornaments or toys can help reduce the risk of accidental ingestion.
• Festive Food: The tempting aroma of holiday treats can be hard to resist, but many festive food are toxic to pets. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, and nuts are particularly dangerous, and even small amounts can cause serious
child. Sunny, on the other hand, loved Georgy like a son would love a mother, being a stray pup who lost his mother on the street. His mom could have died after being ran over which happens a lot to dogs in the streets, or was caught by pound catchers, which is also a sad reality for strays
Georgy was estimated to be five (5) years old then. She loved being kissed, touched, hugged and given belly rubs. She lived for 10 more years despite the tvt cancer because she loved life and we were careful to give her food for senior dogs, multivitamins, and additional supplements for the heart like COQ-10, milk thistle or Liv 52 for the liver since she was also treated for erlichia, and vitamin E 200 i.u.
Thanks to an angel sponsor named Kaye Posadas, we were able to buy her Royal Canin 8+ mature dry dog food (morning feeding and half a bowl with natural food for lunch) and multivitamins every month for about for four (4) years.
This year, angel sponsor Ninah Achacoso continued the sponsorship and added more funds to buy heart supplements and her Royal Canin cardiac canned dog food after she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart last April which is not unlikely for
senior dogs.
The vet said she had a few weeks to live but Georgy continued to make us happy for eight (8) more months. She was such a fighter! She was 15 years old when she crossed the rainbow bridge.
Beautiful Georgy was beautiful till the end, thanks to Paws to Heaven Pet Aquamation for providing a wonderful viewing and pet aquamation for free, their way of supporting Save ALL’s animal welfare work.
Paws to Heaven Pet Aquamation is the special project of Sandra Lu and a dedicated team of pet
lovers. “This endeavor did not emerge from a corporate boardroom but from a genuine concern and personal experience with the loss of beloved pets.
Sandra and her team had witnessed the distressing effects of traditional methods like fire incineration and knew there had to be a kinder, more respectful alternative,” said April Marquez in her article “A Kinder Way to Say Goodbye to A Beloved Furbaby,” in Manila Standard a month ago.
This journey led Sandra and her team to aquamation which is a process that uses water, heat, and alkali to gently break down a pet’s body.
“After extensive research and countless late nights, they succeeded in bringing the first aquamation machine from the USA to the Philippines. This machine represents a significant shift in how pet afterlife care is approached in the country,” Marquez said.
Pet owners who also want to protect the environment choose aquamation because they see it as more than just the final farewell. They know that choosing aquamation is making an eco-friendly choice that aligns with their values. “This method reflects a growing awareness of the environmental impact of our decisions, even in times of grief,” Marquez said.
Paws to Heaven’s commitment to animals goes beyond the services they provide. They give free aquamation services for stray pets—animals often left at their doorstep or found by compassionate individuals on the street. By offering this service at no cost, they ensure that every pet, no matter their background, receives a dignified farewell.
In addition to this, Marquez noted that Paws to Heaven supports local shelters by donating free vitamins from their proceeds. “Understanding the challenges faced by these shelters, they aim to ease their burdens and improve the quality of life for the animals they care for,” she said.
Paws to Heaven is located in Quezon City.
health problems. The "Pets for Christmas" article in Veterinary Practice Magazine emphasizes the importance of keeping these food out of reach and avoiding sharing them with pets. Instead, opt for pet-friendly treats specifically designed for their enjoyment.
• Holiday Plants: The festive greenery of poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and other traditional holiday plants can be toxic to pets. Ingestion of these plants can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other health issues. Keeping these plants out of reach or choosing pet-friendly alternatives like artificial plants can help ensure your pet's safety.
• Stress and Anxiety: The increased activity, unfamiliar faces, and changes in routine associated with the holidays can be overwhelming for pets. The excitement of the season can trigger stress and anxiety, leading to changes in behavior such as restlessness, hiding, or aggression. Creating a safe and quiet space for your pet to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed can help reduce stress levels. This could be a crate, a bed, or a designated room.
During the holidays, it is also important to maintain your pet's regular feeding and exercise schedule as much as possible. Consistency in routine can help reduce stress and anxiety. Stick to their usual meal times and exercise routines, even if the holiday schedule is different.
Making the Holidays Fun for Your Pet
• Pet-Friendly Treats: There are many commercially available pet-friendly treats and snacks that can be
enjoyed during the holidays. Choose options that are safe and appropriate for your pet's age and health.
• Interactive Toys: Give your pet new toys to enjoy during the holidays. Choose toys that are durable, safe, and stimulating.
• Holiday-Themed Activities: Engage your pet in holiday-themed activities like hiding treats in a Christmas stocking or playing games with festive toys.
• Special Photo Opportunities: Capture the holiday spirit with your pet by taking festive photos. Dress them up in a holiday sweater or create a fun backdrop.
Holiday Stress and Anxiety in Pets
Even with precautions, the holidays can be stressful for some pets. The CNN article "Pets and the Holiday Dangers" highlights the importance of recognizing signs of anxiety and stress in pets.
Signs of Stress in Pets:
• Excessive panting or drooling
• Restlessness or pacing
• Hiding or withdrawing
• Destructive behavior
• Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
• Aggression or fearfulness
Tips for Managing Stress:
• Create a Safe Haven: Provide your pet with a quiet
and comfortable space to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed.
• Minimize Stressors: Limit exposure to loud noises, crowds, and unfamiliar people.
• Use Calming Aids: Consider using calming aids such as pheromone diffusers, calming treats, or anxiety vests.
• Consult a Veterinarian: If your pet is exhibiting severe signs of stress or anxiety, consult with your veterinarian for advice and treatment options.

CULINARY WELLNESS
FOR THE MODERN FILIPINO CRA INGS
By Ratziel San Juan
FORMAL culinary education is alive and well in the Philippines thanks to the likes of the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA) Manila, which paved the way for a discipline “virtually unheard of” when it began nearly three decades ago.
Here, Filipino culinary professionals can attain world-class education without leaving the country through CCA Manila's flagship Diploma in Culinary Arts and Technology Management (DCATM) program — a pioneering course that combines culinary mastery with food service management.
Its specialized and short courses likewise extend to Culinary Agriculture, Filipino Cuisine, Commissary Operation, Chef-preneurship, Green Chefmanship, Culinary Blogging, Food Photography, and the summer-hit Young Chefs Bootcamp.
To give back on the occasion of CCA Manila’s 28th-year celebration, the institution’s chancellor, Dr. Ma. Veritas “Tawie” F. Luna, delivered a culinary wellness workshop at Urban Farmers Philippines in Bonifacio Global City.
“Did you know that 68 percent of deaths in the Philippines are due to noncommunicable diseases? Like what? Obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer—all of these are caused by unhealthy diets. The question is: how do we make our diets healthy? We’ve all heard about plant-based diets, reducing sugar, and so on. Now, I’m going to give you three little tips,” Luna opened her workshop.
The chancellor first listed "Cultural and
Personal Enjoyment" as the key to culinary wellness.
“Enjoy the process of cooking and respect culinary traditions. We’re lucky today because of technology; we get access to a variety of cultural traditions, particularly with food. You can have Indian food, Persian food, Greek food, Ilokano food, or even dishes from Basilan. But we should also respect their palates,” Luna said.
“We have to immerse ourselves in their culture and remember that food isn’t just for nourishment; it’s also for diplomacy. Through food, we can relate to and connect with others,” she continued. Next, she highlighted the role of “Skillful Preparation.” This means utilizing cooking techniques that preserve nutrients while enhancing flavor.
CHRISTMAS is the season of joy, love, and unforgettable feasts—but who says you need to splurge to make it extraordinary?
This year, discover the secret to turning your family’s requested creamy dishes into budget-friendly holiday showstoppers: the all-new Alaska All-Purpose Creamer. Loved by 9 out of 10 Filipino moms, Alaska All-Purpose Creamer is the ticket of every “madiskarteng nanay” to transforming everyday ingredients into rich, flavorful creations that bring warmth and excitement to any Christmas table. With its velvety creaminess and versatility, this new pantry essential is perfect for both sweet and savory recipes—making it the ultimate ingredient for a truly magical Noche Buena. “Hindi naman kailangan na napakalaki dapat ng budget mo para maging special ang handaan sa Pasko,” said Grace Tanfelix, whose lifelong passion for cooking has blossomed into a thriving career in content creation. “Kailangan mo lang maging madiskarte sa pagpili ng mga ingredients na gagamitin sa pagluluto.”
The Sipo Egg — a classic Kapampangan dish of quail eggs, shrimp, ham, and veggies in a thick, creamy sauce — is a holiday favorite. “P’wede naman din na gamitin mo na lang kung anong meron ka sa bahay tulad ng leftover chicken breast or Vienna sausage,” Grace said.
“For example, frying at temperatures close to 400 degrees destroys most nutrients. Healthier methods like steaming, sautéing, or gentle heating retain nutrients better,” Luna said.
Finally, she noted “Hydration and Moderation” as the final step in living longer and safer lives.
“Let’s remember to hydrate prop erly, but let’s also cut down on sugary drinks. Sweet sugary beverages are silent killers nowadays. We should also try to cut down on processed foods. Whenever possible, choose whole foods—less canned goods, less skewered meat,” Luna concluded.

MMFF 2024: A CELEBRATION OF PH’S BOLD, DIVERSE CINEMA
By Abigail Adriatico and
Angelica Villanueva
WE’RE just three days away from Christmas, and in the Philippines, the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the highly anticipated film event: the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
This tradition has become a staple for every Filipino family and has captivated local cinemagoers for decades.
Starting on Dec. 25 and running until the first week of January, films by both new and experienced Filipino filmmakers hit the big screens to celebrate the creativity and talent of Philippine cinema.
Marking its 50th-year milestone, the festival adopts the theme “Sinesigla sa Singkwenta” and features 10 competing films—an increase from the usual eight entries — a good mix of genres, spanning romance, comedy, fantasy, drama, horror, and action — all vying for accolades during the festival’s Gabi ng Parangal on Dec. 27 at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila.
As cinephiles and casual viewers flock to cinemas this December, here’s a closer look at the diverse entries that make up MMFF 2024.
And the Breadwinner Is…
And the
Is… follows the story of breadwinner Bambi Salvador who works as an OFW in Taiwan and returns back home to find that the house she paid for had been left dilapidated by her family. Taking on a more dramatic tone compared to Vice Ganda’s immensely comedic entries in the previous MMFF editions, And the Breadwinner Is… serves as a tribute to breadwinners who solely take care of their families, often at the cost of their own dreams.
Marking the return of renowned actress Judy Ann Santos to the horror genre, Espantaho is a horror drama film about a woman named Monet who grieves for her father’s death only to find a series of disasters and tragedy follow the local tradition of mourning, leaving many dark secrets of her family to come about. The film features a star-studded cast composed of Santos, JC Santos, Mon Confiado, Eugene Domingo, Janice de Belen Tommy Abuel Chanda Romero, Nico Antonio, Donna Cariaga, Kian Co, and Archi Adamos Green Bones
Award-winning filmmaker Zig Dulay returns to the film festival with Green Bones which stars Dennis Trillo as a criminal named Domingo Zamora who was arrested for the murder of his sister and niece. Starring alongside him is Ruru Madrid who plays a newlyassigned prison guard named Xavier Gonzaga that is determined to keep Zamora behind bars no matter what. With Green Bones serving as Madrid’s first lead role in a feature film, other members of the cast include Iza Calzado Alessandra De Rossi, Kylie Padilla, Sofia Pablo, Michael de Mesa, and many others. Hold Me Close
Directed by Jason Paul Laxamana and starring Julia Barretto alongside Carlo Aquino , Hold Me Close is a romantic fantasy film which follows a man named Woody who travels around the world to look for a place where he could settle down. As his search takes him to Japan, he meets a woman named Lynlyn, who has the ability to determine if a person would bring her happiness or harm by simply touching them.
Isang Himala
Serving as a film adaptation of the 2003 musical of the same name, which was then based on the 1982 film by the late National Artist Ishmael Bernal’s Himala , Isang Himala stars Aicelle Santos as Elsa, a young woman turned faith healer following a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary who begins to heal the residents of the small town of Cupang, drawing the attention of people from distant places, either to witness and experience her miracle or capitalize on it.
My Future You Love and family take center stage in Regal Entertainment’s official entry to this year’s MMFF, My Future You. Starring on-screen partner Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin, collectively known as FranSeth, the film delivers a heartwarming blend of romance and drama with a sci-fi twist, captivating audiences through a unique storyline that defies the boundaries of time. The movie also explores the complexities of human connections and the ripple effects of altering the past. At its core is the story of Lex played by Seth, a young man in 2009 who stumbles upon a mysterious dating app that links him to Francine’s character, Karen, a woman living in 2024.
Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE NEXT GENERATION
By Angelica Villanueva
A17-YEAR-OLD girl with a wide smile walked toward educator and founding director of Multiple Intelligence International School (MIIS), Mary Joy Abaquin , during a one-onone interview with Manila Standard Life . Holding a pile of papers in her left hand, she reached out her right hand for a quick handshake.
Ysh Ventura, a graduating student from MIIS, sat down with Abaquin and began to share her journey as a young achiever and youth leader.
For Ysh, discovering her potential didn’t come from textbooks or tests. It wasn’t until she transferred to MIIS that her view of education—and herself— transformed into something much more vibrant.
“Before MIIS, I could only express myself through academics. In a larger school, competing with others, it was hard to find my place,” shared Ysh. “I wasn’t the best at academics—my grades were average—and that affected my selfesteem and how I saw myself.”
She then recalled how everything shifted when she transferred to MIIS.
“When I transferred to MI, there were various clubs and activities. Assignments went beyond lectures— we made posters, infographics, and videos, expressing ourselves through different intelligences,” the student said.
Hearing these from their student, Abaquin said that it only proved how education remains the foundation for driving meaningful change in a world increasingly focused on sustainability.
“Change in society starts with education. Teaching sustainability equips future leaders to implement it in policies and laws. We support Parklinks’ vision as the first green urban estate and aim to nurture leadership for sustainable
MCDONALD’S Philippines, in partnership with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), is turning decommissioned store furnishings into classroom furniture for public schools. The initiative, part of the fast-food chain’s ReClassified project, promotes sustainability and supports underserved learning centers.
The project, which repurposes materials from McDonald’s annual renovation of around 70 branches, has so far delivered over 200 chairs to schools in Marikina, Laguna, and Cebu. This year, the program expanded to involve Industrial Design and Interior Design students from DLS-CSB, who developed innovative and cost-efficient furniture concepts.
development,” said Abaquin.
She added that MIIS is committed to developing leaders with a strong sense of environmental responsibility and social consciousness, through its programs like “MI Kids Can Bazaar.”
For nearly a quarter of a century, MIIS has hosted the bazaar, an annual event that empowers students to take charge and make meaningful contributions.
Abaquin described it as a “for-kid-bykids” initiative where students showcase their entrepreneurial and creative skills
Nineteen student teams, guided by mentors and program heads from DLS-CSB, crafted designs using materials sourced from McDonald’s warehouses in Cavite. Proposals included 3D models, rationales, and cost breakdowns to ensure feasibility for mass production.
while embracing values of sustainability and community engagement.
“MIIS gives students aged between 5 and 18 the opportunity to create products or business plans through the application of lessons in math and entrepreneurship. They learn not only business skills but 21st-century skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving,” she explained.
Meanwhile, for students like Ysh, the bazaar served as a preparation for students for a sustainable future.
“Hands-on experiences build essential skills like preparation, organization, and teamwork,” said Ysh. “The Bazaar allows students to work in marketing, finance, and more within a set timeframe, giving them real-world business exposure.”
Shealsogainedadeeperunderstanding of sustainability, emphasizing its realworld application. “At MIIS, sustainability is something we practice. Working with local farmers during bazaars uplifts communities and empowers them,” she added.
