INC TO RALLY FOR PEACE, POLITICAL UNITY—SOLON

MARCOLETA: GOV’T LEADERS MUST WORK TOGETHER

THE Iglesia Ni Cristo will not take sides between President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte, a lawmaker and prominent INC member said as the group readies for its national rally for peace tomorrow (Monday, January 13, 2025).

“The INC does not take sides. That is a categorical answer there. The INC would like to see people like the Vice President and the President work together. That is the essence of good government,” Sagip party-list Rodante Marcoleta said in an interview with the Bilyonaryo News Channel. The rally at the Quirino Grandstand is expected to draw about 1 million participants, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.

“It’s a rally for peace, that’s all. I think the INC wants to send a message across the nation that peace is a factor in achieving development and progress in this country. The INC believes that peace can only be

achieved by uniting our people, and this unity can be best demonstrated by our leaders,” Marcoleta said.

Three impeachment complaints have been filed against Duterte before the House of Representatives based on multiple grounds, including culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, bribery, and other high crimes.

Mr. Marcos earlier said he does not support calls for Duterte’s impeachment as it would not help the Filipino people.

Earlier, an anchor from INC’s official broadcast arm also sought to debunk “fake news” claiming that the religious organization’s rally on Monday was intended to defend the Vice President.

“What will take place... is a rally for peace. It is not for VP Sara. It will take no [political] sides,” Net25 news anchor Ali Sotto said in Filipino.

“Let’s be objective. Let’s be factual. The rally is for peace -- kapayapaan,” she added.

Sotto’s statement appeared to counter the claims of lawyer Harry Roque, who earlier suggested that the rally would block efforts to impeach the Vice President.

“First of all, this [rally] opposes the impeachment of Inday Sara Duterte. Second, they want peace in the government,”

Roque earlier told Bombo Radyo.

Roque, reportedly abroad but whose exact whereabouts are unknown, has also been promoting the rally on his Facebook account, inviting the public to join.

Malacañang has suspended government work and classes in the cities of Manila and Pasay on Monday to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.

The MMDA will also deploy 1,300 personnel to manage traffic and ensure public safety during the rally.

Nine roads around the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, Manila will be closed to traffic on January 13.

In a traffic advisory, the City of Manila said roads to be closed from 4 a.m. onwards on Monday are:

• Katigbak Drive and South Drive

• Independence Road

MARCOS HAILS PH’S DIPLOMATIC, ECONOMIC STRIDES

PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Saturday celebrated the start of 2025 with a hopeful message, lauding the country’s diplomatic achievements and economic resilience.

“Early in my presidency, I vowed to reintroduce the Philippines to the world and to forge meaningful, concrete, and mutually beneficial partnerships that will drive growth in the 21st-century economy,. A great deal has transpired in the last two and a half years,” he said during the vin d’ honneur at the Palace.

Mr. Marcos detailed his administration’s efforts to expand diplomatic ties, citing the opening of four embassies in Europe and Latin America in 2024. He also announced plans to establish four more foreign service posts in North America, Asia, and the Pacific this year, bringing the country’s total to 102 by the end of 2025.

“We welcome the opening of new embassies in Manila, such as those from Bahrain and Slovenia, and are eager to see missions from Central Asia in the coming years,” he said. The President likewise reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to an independent foreign policy that promotes peace, cooperation, and adherence to international law.

He also underscored the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2027-2028, calling for the support of the international community.

“Our candidature stands on our rich experience in building peace and forging consensus,” he said.

COMELEC: ELECTION CHECKPOINTS, GUN BAN BEGIN TODAY

THE Commission on Elections urged the public to cooperate with the police and military manning checkpoint inspections in relation to the upcoming May 2025 midterm polls as the election period starts today (Sunday, January 12, 2025). The National Capital Region Police Office also vowed to strictly enforce the election gun ban that will last until June 11, 2025.

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development will expand its “Walang Gutom Kitchen” initiative to provincial areas this year, focusing on regions with high poverty rates.

DSWD Undersecretary Eduardo Punay said the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Leyte, Samar, and the Bicol region will be the primary focus.

The “Walang Gutom Kitchen,” launched in Pasay City in December, operates as a food bank and soup kitchen that primarily serves families and individuals experiencing involuntary hunger, including those living on the streets.

The initiative has drawn support from private sector partners,

TUCP REITERATES CALL FOR HOUSE TO PASS P150 WAGE INCREASE

THE Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) on Saturday reiterated its call for the House of Representatives to pass the P150 across-the-board daily wage hike, as  Filipino workers can no longer meet ends with the continuing rising cost of basic needs.

In a statement, the TUCP Party-list said a majority of Filipino families endure crippling poverty and hunger, aggravated by the soaring costs of food, power, water, and social security contributions—now further compounded by a looming increase in LRT-1 fares.

“Everything is going up—food prices, utility bills, SSS contributions, and now even the train fare— everything except workers’ wages,” the labor group stated.

TUCP, the largest labor group in

minimum wages are not enough to make ends meet.

“These regional wage board orders fail to realistically lift the regional minimum wages to even equal the level of the governmentset poverty threshold,” it said.

“Without a P150 wage hike, those at risk of becoming poor or are on the edge of poverty will fall through the cracks amid these price and fare hikes further increasing the total number of poor Filipino families. Without a P150 wage hike, the New Year offers no new relief in sight for workers, but only

He cited the plan LRT-1 operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC)  fare hike of up to P15 for a one-way end-to-end journey, saying the daily minimum wage in the National Capital Region (NCR) only increased by P35 last year.

“If approved, this means an additional P30 daily expense for workers who are commuting to and from work roundtrip through the LRT1. NCR minimum wage earners will be left with just a measly P5 of the recent wage increase,” the TUCP added.

“How can a meager P5 increase offset or even cushion skyrocketing prices and rising SSS premiums?

IN BRIEF

MMDA APPREHENDS 66 VEHICLES IN ROAD CLEARING

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) apprehended a total of 66 vehicles, 16 of which were towed and impounded, as part of the ongoing road-clearing operation aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the National Capital Region.

At least 16 vehicles were towed and impounded during the operation. Operatives of the MMDA Special Operations Group-Strike Force, led by Chief Gabriel Go, conducted searches in areas such as Sgt. Esguerra, Quezon Avenue, Blumentritt Street, and Dapitan Street in Quezon City. The team focused on removing all types of vehicles that were obstructing and congesting traffic flow in these locations.

MMDA chairman Romando Artes emphasized that the agency will continue to clear all public roads, alternative routes, and Mabuhay Lanes to ensure that roadways remain passable and free from obstructions for motorists. Joel E. Zurbano

RODRIGUEZ APPEALS TO SOLONS TO STOP INCREASE IN SSS FEES

CAGAYAN de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez appealed to his fellow legislators to support a resolution urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to suspend the implementation of the increase in the Social Security System (SSS) premium contribution of millions of private sector employees that takes effect this month.

Rodriguez said the one percentage-point increase “will be an additional burden to employers and employees who are struggling to make ends meet.”

“There is growing opposition to the scheduled increase in consideration of the current economic situation in the Philippines,” Rodriguez said as he earlier filed House Resolution 2161.

He said SSS should also “first address their (collection) inefficiency (as reported by the Commission on Audit) before pushing through with the increase.”

SSS officials must likewise “disclose to the Filipino people” their “huge bonuses” and compensation, he said. The premium contribution adjustment is contained under Section 4 of Republic Act No. 11199, or the Social Security Act of 2018. Under the law, the premium contribution was pegged at 12 percent of a contributor’s monthly salary for 2019 and 2010, 13 percent for 2021 and 2022, 14 percent for 2023 and 2024, and 15 percent for this year. The employer’s share of the contribution was similarly

gradually adjusted from eight percent in 2019 to 10 percent this year. The employee’s portion went up from four percent to five percent over the same period.

In HR 2161, Rodriguez cited the report of the Philippine Statistics Authority showing inflation (rate of increase in prices) jumped to 2.9 percent in December 2024 from 2.5 percent the previous month.

This meant that prices rose more quickly, he said. “Higher inflation can lead to a loss of purchasing power and increasing SSS contributions will be an additional financial burden especially to employees,” he said.

He said the clamor to suspend the increase was also “due to the fact that revenue of SSS in 2023 was P353.82 billion, which was higher than that of the previous

year,” while the pension system’s 2023 net income amounted to P83.13 billion, exceeding its target of P51.06 billion.

Rodriguez also highlighted the 2023 report of the Commission on Audit showing “an inefficiency in the collection of premium contributions from delinquent employers.”

“The audit report shows that only P4.581 billion was collection, which is only around 4.89 percent of the established collectibles of P93.747 billion for 2023,” he said.

If the Mindanao lawmaker’s colleagues approved his resolution, the suspension call would become a sense of the House of Representatives. Other lawmakers and workers’ groups have called for suspending this year’s SSS premium increase.

DPWH COMPLETES

P20M ANGAT FARM-TO-MARKET ROAD

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a P20 million farm-to-market road in Barangay Sta. Lucia, Angat, Bulacan,  ensuring road accessibility for residents and reducing transportation costs for agricultural goods.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the completed section of the project spans 2.09 kilometers of concrete pavement and includes 92 meters of stone masonry, ensuring both durability and improved transportation efficiency.

“The farm-to-market road is expected to boost local trade, increase productivity, lower transportation cost, and minimize post-harvest losses of residents in the area,” he added.

“The completed project does not just physically improve accessibility in the area, but also represents a commitment to growth, resilience, and sustainable progress for the community it serves,” DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller Tolentino said. He said more farm-to-market roads are on the blueprint and would be implemented immediately after the election period. Vito Barcelo

CAAP ACHIEVES ISO 9001 FOR FLIGHT STANDARDS

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has achieved the ISO 9001:2015 certification for its Flight Standards Inspectorate Service (FSIS).

This accomplishment follows four previous attempts over the years, illustrating CAAP’s determination and commitment to continuous improvement and adherence to international quality standards.

The ISO 9001:2015 certification, a globally recognized standard for quality management systems, reflects FSIS’s dedication to operational excellence, the enhancement of passenger safety, and the promotion of public confidence in the Philippine aviation industry. COAST GUARD MAINTAINS PRESENCE IN WEST PHILIPPINE SEA

THE Philippine Coast Guard  (PCG) maintained its presence in the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) by deploying its coast guard vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

The PCG vessel, BRPTeresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) initially anchored in Escoda Shoal remains deployed in the vicinity where the Chinese Coast Guard vessel 3304 is illegally sailing.

The area is approximately 70-80 nautical miles off the coast of Zambales, according to PCG Spokesperson for WPS Commo. Jay Tarriela.

“This unwavering presence complies with the standing policy direction of His Excellency President @bongbongmarcos

aimed at thwarting the normalization and legitimization of the Chinese Coast Guard’s illegal actions, which may lead to assertions of control over these waters.” Tarriela said on X.

“Moreover, the continued vigilance of BRP Teresa Magbanua serves as a proactive measure to ensure that Filipino fishermen can carry out their activities without the threat of harassment or intimidation. The deployment of the PCG’s white ship underscores a commitment to monitoring and maintaining a visible presence to deter illegal activities by the Chinese Coast Guard while adhering to principles of restraint and

non-provocation,” he added. WPS monitor and Sealight director Ray Powell told Manila Standard that the recent development in WPS has nothing to do with the Typhon deployment in the Philippines.

“I don’t think there is a direct connection between the Typhon deployment and the deployment of CCG 5901 or the recent increase in PRC activity around Scarborough Shoal.” China earlier issued a stern warning to the Philippines over its planned purchase of the US-made Typhon mid-range capability missile system, saying there will be consequences if the acquisition pushes through. DSWD: MECHANISMS IN PLACE TO COMPLY WITH COMELEC RULES

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured the public that mechanisms are in place to safeguard all programs and services from any form of political interference.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said these measures will ensure the department’s adherence to the conditionalities set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) when it exempted 28 DSWD programs from the poll spending ban.

“We would like to take this

opportunity to reiterate and reassure our kababayans that all the necessary safeguards are being instituted by the department to really protect the programs and services of the agency from any form of political interference,” Dumlao told a media forum. In a memorandum issued on

January 7, the Comelec approved the request of the DSWD to exempt 28 social welfare programs from Section 261 (v)(2) of the Omnibus Election Code (OEC).

The memorandum also ordered the DSWD’s full compliance to three conditions such as “no candidate/ politicians during the distribution of ‘ayuda’ in whatever nature or form; the DSWD must furnish the guidelines as committed by the agency in its public procurements; and faithful observance of these guidelines by the DSWD and its personnel and partners.”

“Based on the conditions issued by the Comelec, DSWD will ensure that

they are followed,” Dumlao.

The DSWD official also pointed out one of the agency’s safety nets against politicking is to educate the public on the agency’s programs and services.

“One of the information we deliver is regarding the programs and services provided by the DSWD. Explaining We tell them that the help that comes from the government, the politicians or those running in the elections have no participation,” the official.

This approach, according to the DSWD spokesperson, empowers the public and voters to arrive at informed decisions and actions and allay their vulnerability to political interference.

NATIONAL Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) Executive Director Glenda Relova urged the public to report individuals or groups facilitating the sale and illegal use of fake persons with disability ID cards. This, in order to avail of the benefits and privileges provided for under Republic Act (RA) 10754, also known as“An Act Expanding the Benefits and Privileges of Persons with Disability,” Relova said.

The NCDA is an attached agency of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Relova said the public may report incidents involving the sale of fake persons with disability IDs to the NCDA through their email,  council@ncda. gov.ph or through their social media pages. Maricel V. Cruz

PURGATORY: LA FIRES LEAVE NOTHING BUT A TINY MEMENTO

PACIFIC PALISADES—When

Kyle Kucharski and Nicole Perri moved into their dream home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, they bought a crate of wine to mark the realization of a dream, and put it aside for a special day.

That day never came.

Now after a raging fire destroyed almost the entire neighborhood, all they have left is the empty box with the brand name written across it: Purgatory.

“We bought it when we moved in,” said Kucharski.

“It was like we bought wine for our place to celebrate, and we never drank it.”

“It is kind of funny... ‘purgatory’,” he winced.

The couple and their two babies—a newborn and an 18-month-old—were among thousands who fled their homes in terror on Tuesday as a wind-whipped wildfire ripped through Pacific Palisades.

Firefighters were helpless in the face of winds hitting 160 kilometers per hour that flung fireballs from house to house, reducing whole streets to ash.

Around 10,000 buildings have been destroyed in multiple blazes that erupted around Los Angeles, in a chaotic nightmare that has upended the city.

The Palisades fire was the first, followed by an inferno that has flattened much of Altadena. Several other fires have sparked fear and evacuations, with over 150,000 people displaced and 11 dead.

On Friday, Kucharski and Perri crossed police checkpoints to get back into the Palisades evacuation zone to see what remained of their lives.

“I was expecting to find... I don’t know... anything,” said Perri as tears welled in her eyes.

“Anything to take home and remember this place.”

Instead, there were ashes and twisted metal; the useless remains of two happy years in what used to be one of the most desirable parts of Los Angeles.

“The nursery was right there,” Perri said, gesturing to the still-smoking mess.

“The kitchen was there. Our bedroom was right here. And this is the garage... well, was the garage.”

As they picked their way through the outline of the ground floor, rubble crunched underfoot — the furniture, artwork, kitchen appliances, books, and clothes that made up their lives.

“Oh man, oh man,” says a shaken Kucharski, turning to hold his sobbing wife.

“I feel broken. I feel lost. I feel devastated,” said Perri.

“I don’t want to have to tell my boys that this was their home and it’s gone.” AFP

SOKOR: JEJU AIR JET BLACK BOXES STOPPED RECORDING BEFORE CRASH

SEOUL—The black boxes holding the flight data and cockpit voice recorders for the crashed Jeju Air flight that left 179 people dead stopped recording four minutes before the disaster, South Korea’s transport ministry said Saturday.

The Boeing 737-800 was flying from Thailand to Muan, South Korea, on December 29 carrying 181 passengers and crew when it belly-landed at the Muan airport and exploded in a fireball after slamming into a concrete barrier.

It was the worst-ever aviation disaster on South Korean soil.

“The analysis revealed that both the CVR and FDR data were not recorded during the four minutes leading up to the aircraft’s collision with the localizer,” the

transport ministry said in a statement, referring to the two recording devices.

The localizer is a barrier at the end of the runway that helps with aircraft landings and was blamed for exacerbating the crash’s severity.

The damaged flight data recorder had been deemed unrecoverable for data extraction by South Korean authorities, who sent it to the United States for analysis at the US National Transportation Safety Board laboratory.

But it appears that the boxes holding clues to the flight’s final moments experienced data loss, leaving authorities trying to find out what happened.

“Plans are in place to investigate the cause of the data loss during the ongoing accident investigation,” the ministry said.

South Korean and US investigators are still probing the cause of the crash, which prompted a national outpouring of mourning with memorials set up across the country.

Investigators said the boxes were crucial to their probe but added they would not give up on trying to find out why the crash happened.

“The investigation will be conducted through the examination and analysis of various data. The Committee is committed to doing its best to accurately determine the cause

BIDEN BLASTS ‘SHAMEFUL’ META MOVE TO SCRAP FACT-CHECKING

WASHINGTON—US President Joe Biden blasted Meta for scrapping factchecking on Facebook and Instagram in the United States, calling the move “really shameful” after a global network warned of real-world harm if the tech giant expands its decision to other countries.

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg triggered alarm Tuesday when he announced the Palo Alto company was ditching third-party fact-checking in the United States and turning over the task of debunking falsehoods to ordinary users under a model known as “Community Notes,” popularized by X.

The decision was widely seen as an attempt to appease President-elect Donald Trump, whose conservative support base has long complained that fact-

checking on tech platforms was a way to curtail free speech and censor right-wing content.

“I think it’s really shameful,” Biden told reporters at the White House when asked about the announcement.

“Telling the truth matters,” he said, adding that the move was “completely contrary to everything America’s about.”

The International Fact-Checking Network has warned of devastating consequences if Meta broadens its policy shift beyond US borders to the company’s programs covering more than 100 countries.

“Some of these countries are highly vulnerable to misinformation that spurs political instability, election interference, mob violence, and even genocide,” IFCN, which includes AFP among dozens of its global member

organizations, said in an open letter to Zuckerberg.

“If Meta decides to stop the program worldwide, it is almost certain to result in real-world harm in many places,” it added.

Zuckerberg doubled down in an interview Friday with podcaster Joe Rogan, comparing the fact-checking program with “something out of 1984,” in a reference to George Orwell’s dystopian novel.

He added that the program, which began in 2016, was “destroying so much trust, especially in the United States.”

Zuckerberg also expressed regret for giving “too much deference” to the traditional media, criticizing it for pushing the narrative that social media misinformation had swung the 2016 election in favor of Trump. AFP

GERMANY RACES TO SECURE STRICKEN ‘RUSSIAN SHADOW FLEET’

BERLIN—Germany was racing Saturday to secure a heavily loaded tanker stranded off its northern coast, towing the stricken ship it said was part of Russia’s sanctionsbusting “shadow fleet” away from shore to avert an oil spill. The 274-meter-long Eventin was sailing from Russia to Egypt with almost 100,000 tonnes of oil on board when its engine failed and it lost the ability to maneuver, according to Germany’s Central Command for Maritime Emergencies.

As the vessel drifted in coastal waters Friday, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock slammed Russia’s use of “dilapidated oil tankers” to avoid sanctions on its oil exports, calling it a threat to European security. Three tugs have linked up with the Eventin and are attempting to steer it northeast, away from the coast and toward a “safer” area where there is “more sea space”, the command said. AFP

8 STUDENTS RECOVERING AFTER JAPAN UNIVERSITY HAMMER ATTACK

TOKYO — Eight Tokyo university students attacked by a hammerwielding woman in a classroom are recuperating and none required hospitalization, their school has said.

A 22-year-old student who identified herself as South Korean was arrested on the spot Friday on suspicion of assault, a Tokyo police spokesman told AFP.

Several reports had said people were seen bleeding from the head after the attack, which public broadcaster NHK said had been motivated by frustration over bullying, citing investigative sources.

The attacker began swinging a hammer in the classroom “all of a sudden,”a student who witnessed the incident told Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi.

“Everyone was panicking. I was so scared at first that my hands were shaking.”

The eight who were hurt all received medical treatment and ended up requiring no hospitalization, Hosei University said in a statement late Friday. AFP

of the accident,” the ministry said. Investigators have pointed to a bird strike, faulty landing gear, and the runway barrier as possible issues.

The pilot warned of a bird strike before pulling out of a first landing, then crashed on a second attempt when the landing gear did not emerge.

This week, lead investigator Lee Seung-yeol told reporters that “feathers were found” in one of the plane’s recovered engines, but cautioned a bird strike does not lead to an immediate engine failure.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PIONEER BACKS INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT

SOCIAL enterprises advocate Marie Liza Dacanay has spent over three decades championing social entrepreneurship, positioning social enterprises as powerful catalysts for poverty alleviation, inclusive growth and sustainable development.

As the founding president of the Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in Asia (ISEA), she has positioned the organization as a regional leader in rallying for transformative change and bridging the gaps between government, business, civil society, and academia to empower marginalized communities.

“Social enterprises are more than businesses—they are lifelines that empower marginalized communities to rise above poverty and build a sustainable future,” she said.

MSME empowerment

Dacanay’s leadership is deeply rooted in her advocacy for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and social enterprises as key drivers of inclusive development.

Her efforts have established a robust ecosystem where social enterprises address structural inequalities, uplift marginalized groups, and tackle systemic poverty.

ISEA’s mission extends to advocating for marginalized groups, including women, small-scale producers, and the LGBT community.

“Inclusive growth begins when we bridge the gaps between the public, private, and civil society sectors, enabling social enterprises to thrive as drivers of systemic change. True empowerment means creating opportunities for women, smallscale producers, and the LGBTQIA+ community to lead, thrive, and contribute to a more equitable society,” Dacanay said.

Through platforms like women’s empowerment, livelihoods and food in agricultural value chains, ISEA promotes benchmarks and guidelines for transformational partnerships that empower small-scale producers.

Dacanay’s work also bridges the digital divide through technological innovations such as community networks, while encouraging youth engagement in rural revitalization and social entrepreneurship.

Systematic support

CAPITAL ONE PHILIPPINES GIVES BACK ON INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERISM

DAY

At the core of ISEA’s advocacy is the Poverty Reduction through Social Entrepreneurship (PRESENT) Bill, a legislative framework designed to institutionalize government support for social enterprises.

“The PRESENT Bill is not just a policy—it is a promise to institutionalize support for social enterprises, enabling them to unlock their full potential and create lasting impact,” Dacanay said.

“With systematic support, we can scale up the impact of social enterprises to achieve widespread poverty reduction. Imagine what could be achieved if the government aligns its resources and policies with the growth of this sector,” she said.

The bill includes provisions for hybrid financing models— combining grants with non-collateralized loans—capacitybuilding programs, and tax incentives to boost the sector’s impact.

Dacanay’s leadership in multi-stakeholder consultations and policy research has catalyzed the creation of the PRESENT Coalition, a driving force for enacting this crucial legislation.

National impact

Despite the absence of systemic support, social enterprises across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have consistently demonstrated their resilience and potential to alleviate poverty.

BEFORE the onset of 2025, Kyla Mendoza gifted herself and her supporters a bronze medal in the Individual All-Around event at the prestigious Rome Cup International Tournament Winter Edition in Rome, Italy.

It was a tting culmination of a year marked by victories, challenges, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

The year 2024 proved to be a breakthrough year for Kyla.

In June, she clinched gold at the Ritmica Oltre Mare in Riccione, Italy, showcasing her ability to excel against formidable competition. Later in November, she won three silver medals at the Vienna Cup in Austria, further solidifying her status as one of the sport’s most promising talents.

The Rome Cup bronze was more than just another medal—it was a testament to her resilience, passion, and the sacri ces she and her family have made along the way.

Behind Kyla’s success is a strong support system.

Her parents, Randy and Jenny, and her older sister Krystel, have been her pillars of strength. Living in Milan but deeply rooted in their hometown of Lipa, Batangas, the Mendoza family has stood by her side through countless hours of training, international competitions, and the challenges of balancing academics and athletics.

Her mother, Jenny, recalls Kyla’s early days in the sport.

“Lumaki siya kay Coach Olga Derina, and there were times when preparing for competitions meant spending long hours at the gym. At rst, laro-laro lang, mahilig magtumbling! Kasama pa niya ang ate niyang si Krystel, pero mas gusto ng kapatid ang volleyball,” Jenny shared with a laugh.

PLAYFUL START

Kyla’s journey into the world of rhythmic gymnastics began humbly.

At just ve years old, while most children were learning to play with toys and trace simple shapes, she took her rst steps into a gym. Those early days were marked by playful tumbles and endless curiosity, but it didn’t take long for her grace and natural talent to shine.

By the age of eight, she

was traveling internationally, competing in countries like France, Australia, Croatia, Italy, and Belgium. Her performances captivated audiences, and her precise routines left judges impressed.

With every leap, spin, and toss, she steadily built a reputation as a young athlete with extraordinary skills and boundless potential.

Under the guidance of Coach Olga Derina of DEA Rhythmic Gymnastics, Kyla has blossomed into a disciplined and skillful gymnast. Training five days a week for four to five hours at a time, her dedication to her craft is nothing short of inspiring.

As a third-year high school student at Iqdal Masih in Milan, Kyla manages to balance her academic responsibilities with the demands of an elite athletic career. The rigorous schedule of training, studying, traveling, and competing is not for the faint of heart, but Kyla thrives in the challenge.

“It’s not easy, but I’ve learned to appreciate the

opportunities and experiences that come with this lifestyle,” she shared.

Her advice to aspiring athletes is simple yet profound: “Do what you love and follow your dreams.”

With every competition, Kyla continues to prove that hard work, focus, and passion can turn dreams into reality. Her recent silver medal in the Ball apparatus event at the Rome Cup is just one of many moments that highlight her extraordinary talent and perseverance.

As Kyla Mendoza steps into 2025 with new goals and aspirations, she remains a shining example for young athletes everywhere.

MERVIN GUARTE: A LEGACY OF TRIUMPH AND DETERMINATION

WHEN Mervin Guarte rst burst onto the scene, his drive and talent were evident as he vied for three gold medals at the 2009 Palarong Pambansa in Tacloban. That event in Southern Leyte would set the tone for a storied 15-year career, one marked by remarkable victories and relentless perseverance until his untimely passing just a week ago.

On April 29, 2009, Guarte delivered a defining performance at the Leyte Sports Development Center. After a controversial 800m race in which he felt hindered by Calabarzon’s Salvador Garin Jr., Guarte turned his frustration into triumph. The then-17year-old claimed gold in the 1,500m run, clocking an impressive 4:07.94. Though he aimed for three golds, Guarte secured two—adding the 5,000m secondary boys’ athletics title to his achievements. A protest regarding the 800m race result was ultimately denied. This experience became a turning point for Guarte, propelling him to dominate future competitions with renewed focus.

“He elbowed me again, but I didn’t let it bother me. What they did, I took personally—that’s why I gave it my all to win this event,” Guarte said after his victory. Rising Through the Ranks

The following year, Guarte’s dominance was evident as he represented San Sebastian College in the NCAA track meet. He captured four gold medals, breaking records in the 1,500m, 3,000m steeplechase, and 800m events, with another gold in his favorite 5,000m race.

“I’m just happy I’m performing well in my first year in the NCAA,” said Guarte, whose performances soon earned him a spot on the national athletics team.

In 2010, Guarte continued to impress by winning the junior division’s 5,000m run at the National Open and claiming the national title in the 5km event of the Milo Marathon. These accomplishments solidi ed his place as one of the country’s top athletes.

International Success Guarte represented the Philippines in multiple Southeast Asian Games, earning ve silver medals and a bronze in 2017. In July 2014, he was part of the national relay team that set a still-standing record in the 4x800m at the Vietnam Open.

At 28, Guarte retired from athletics but didn’t step away from the sporting world.

He discovered obstacle course racing (OCR), where he quickly excelled. Despite being unfamiliar with the sport initially, Guarte embraced the challenge with the same determination that defined his athletics career.

“My rst love was athletics. For 13 years, it was my life. But the time came when I had to leave it behind. There’s no such thing as forever,” Guarte shared when discussing his transition to OCR.

Mervin Guarte’s journey from the tracks of Palarong Pambansa to international competitions and beyond is a testament to his unwavering spirit. Whether breaking records, representing his country, or conquering new challenges, Guarte left an indelible mark on the world of sports. His legacy serves as an inspiration to future generations of Filipino athletes.

GAB PICKS MOM BOXER AS VOICE OF WOMEN IN SPORTS

NORJ Guro, a professional boxer who once faced online ridicule for her appearance, has transformed adversity into advocacy.

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) recognized her achievements by selecting her to represent professional female athletes during the 50th Founding Anniversary Celebration of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

“As one of the outstanding female athletes in the field of non-traditionally female sports, the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has chosen Ms. Norj Guro, professional boxer, to be the representative… Mabuhay ka, Norj Guro! Your story inspires us all. Ipinagmamalaki ka ng GAB at ng lahat ng kababaihan,” stated GAB in an o cial announcement on social media.

Guro, the former Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) world atomweight champion, previously faced online bullying following her ght against Camilla Zamorano in October 2022 in Hermosillo, Mexico, for the WBC International atomweight title. Despite her loss by unanimous decision, the mother of two has emerged as a symbol of courage and perseverance.

In her heartfelt speech at the PCW event, Guro shared that her greatest challenges lay not in the ring but in overcoming personal pain and public scrutiny.

“Sometimes, the most painful battles are not inside the boxing ring but outside of it. I have experienced words that broke my heart. One time, I saw hurtful comments online and was bullied about my appearance during my last fight in Mexico. People mocked me and laughed at how I looked. But I chose to rise above those hurtful words,” she said.

Adding to her challenges, Guro revealed that she was still mourning the loss of her young son, who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a mother of two, I have faced many challenges. One of the hardest was losing my child in 2021 due to COVID-19. That loss was devastating and broke me in ways I can’t even explain, but it also made me stronger. Now, every fight I take is dedicated to my son,” she shared.

Despite these hardships, Guro carries her country’s flag with pride, advocating for the respect and recognition of women in sports.

“Every ght, every win, I carry the name of the Philippines with pride and advocate for the recognition and respect of women in sports. To those who judge, especially when it comes to women in sports, remember this: Your words have power. When you criticize, you overlook the hard work and sacri ces behind every achievement. Sports are about heart, discipline, and effort—qualities that all athletes deserve respect for.”

THE DANGERS OF TEACHING DOGS TO WALK ON THEIR HIND LEGS

THE act of training a dog to walk on its hind legs, while seemingly a harmless display of canine intelligence, can have detrimental effects on the animal's well-being. This practice, although often perceived as an entertaining trick, places an unnatural strain on the dog's musculoskeletal system, potentially leading to a cascade of health complications.

Understanding Canine Anatomy

Dogs are naturally quadrupedal creatures, meaning they are designed to walk on all four legs. Their skeletal structure, muscle development, and weight distribution are meticulously adapted for this form of locomotion. The hind legs are engineered for propulsion, providing the driving force for movement, while the front legs serve as crucial stabilizers, ensuring balance and steering. This intricate interplay between the limbs allows for efficient and effortless movement, minimizing strain on the joints and muscles.

The Impact of Two-Legged Walking on Canine Physiology

When a dog is compelled to walk on its hind legs, the entire weight of its body is abruptly transferred to its rear limbs. This unnatural posture places immense pressure on the joints, ligaments, and muscles of the hind legs, leading to a series of potentially serious health issues.

The Risks of Bipedalism

When dogs are trained to walk on their hind legs, several health issues can arise due to the unnatural posture and movement. The following risks have been identified:

1.Spinal Injuries: The spine of a dog is not designed to support the entire body weight when standing or walking on two legs. This can lead to spinal misalignment, slipped discs, and chronic pain. According to the article "The Damage of Training Dogs to Walk on Their Hind Legs" by Splash and Dash for Dogs, prolonged bipedalism can result in serious spinal injuries that may lead to neurological damage.

2.Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia, a condition characterized by malformation of the hip joint, can lead to lameness, pain, and difficulty moving, significantly impacting the dog's quality of life. The increased stress on the hip joints, caused by the shift in weight distribution when dogs walk on their hind legs alone, can exacerbate existing hip dysplasia or even trigger its development in dogs predisposed to the condition. The article "Should Dogs Walk on Two Legs?" from College for Pets highlights that the unnatural weight distribution

can lead to joint deterioration, resulting in pain and mobility issues.

3.Knee Problems: The knees are also significantly affected when dogs are trained to walk on their hind legs. The strain on the knee joints can lead to ligament tears, arthritis, and other degenerative conditions. The article "Why Your Dog Shouldn’t Be Walking on Hind Legs" from Ultimate Pet Nutrition emphasizes that the risk of knee injuries increases with the duration and frequency of this type of training.

4.Muscle Imbalances: Walking on two legs can create muscle imbalances, as the front legs are not utilized in the same way. This can lead to weakness in the front limbs and affect the dog's overall balance and coordination. The article from Ultimate

Pet Nutrition, "Why Your Dog Shouldn’t Be Walking on Hind Legs", discusses how these imbalances can hinder a dog's ability to perform normal activities.

Long-Term Health Consequences

The long-term consequences of training dogs to walk on their hind legs can be severe. Chronic pain, mobility issues, and a decreased quality of life may result from the physical strain placed on the dog's body. As noted in the article "The Damage of Training Dogs to Walk on Their Hind Legs," Splash and Dash for Dogs says, the cumulative effects of these

Alternatives to Bipedal Training

Instead of training dogs to walk on their hind legs, there are numerous alternative activities that can promote their physical and mental well-being. Engaging dogs in activities that align with their natural behaviors is essential for their health. Some recommended alternatives include:

• Agility Training: A popular activity that combines physical exercise with mental stimulation. Dogs are guided through obstacle courses, navigating a variety of challenges designed to test their speed, coordination, and agility. These courses can include jumps, tunnels, weaves, and other obstacles, providing a fun and engaging workout for dogs of all breeds and sizes.

• Trick Training: Teaching dogs various tricks that do not compromise their health can be both fun and rewarding. Tricks such as rolling over, playing dead, or fetching can be enjoyable for both the dog and the owner.

injuries can lead to permanent disabilities.

Ethical Considerations

While the physical risks of teaching a dog to walk on its hind legs are undeniable, the ethical implications are equally important. Training a dog to perform unnatural movements can be seen as exploiting their natural abilities. Dogs are not simply pets; they are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain and discomfort. Forcing them to engage in activities that cause them distress raises questions about the responsibilities of pet owners and trainers. It is crucial to remember that dogs deserve to be treated with respect and care, and their well-being should always be prioritized.

CUCUMBERS AND DOGS: A HEALTHY TREAT

CUCUMBERS are often regarded as a safe and healthy option that dog owners might consider sharing with their furry friends. But how suitable are cucumbers for dogs, and what should pet owners know before offering this crunchy vegetable to their canine companions?

Nutritional Benefits of Cucumbers

“Cucumbers are a hydrating food because their water content is 96%. They are also low in calories and sugar,” said Victoria Lynn Arnold in “Can Dogs Eat Cucumbers?” published in the Pet MD website. Cucumbers can help keep dogs hydrated, especially on hot days or after exercise. It is also low in fat and sodium, making them a great treat option for dogs that need to watch their weight or have dietary restrictions. According to Arnold, cucumbers are rich in vitamins and minerals, including:

• Vitamin K: Essential for healthy bones and blood clotting.

• Vitamin C: Supports the immune system and overall health.

• Potassium: Helps maintain proper muscle and nerve function.

• Magnesium: Aids in energy production and muscle health.

Can Dogs Eat Cucumbers Safely?

Yes, dogs can eat cucumbers. There are some important considerations to ensure that cucumbers are safe and beneficial for your pet:

1. Moderation is Key

While cucumbers are a healthy treat, they should be given in moderation. Too much cucumber can cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs, leading to symptoms like diarrhea or bloating.

2. Cut into Appropriate Sizes

To prevent choking, cucumbers should be sliced into small, manageable pieces, especially for smaller dogs.

3. Avoid Seasonings and Additives

Cucumbers served to dogs should be plain, without salt, spices, or dressings. Some seasonings, like garlic or onion powder, are toxic to dogs and must be avoided.

4, Watch for Allergies or Sensitivities

Although rare, some dogs may have an allergic reaction or sensitivity to cucumbers. Always introduce

Like any treat, cucumbers should be given in moderation and with attention to safety. This should also be sliced into sizes best fitting for your

new food gradually and monitor your pet for signs of discomfort or allergic reactions, such as itching, swelling, or vomiting.

Benefits of Cucumbers for Dogs

When fed appropriately, cucumbers can offer several benefits for dogs:

1. Weight Management

Cucumbers are an excellent low-calorie treat for dogs, making them an ideal snack for pets that need to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. They provide a satisfying crunch without adding excess calories.

2. Hydration

The high water content in cucumbers can help keep dogs hydrated, especially during warm weather or after physical activity.

3. Dental Health

The crunchy texture of cucumbers may help scrape away plaque from a dog’s teeth, contributing to better dental hygiene.

4. Alternative to High-Fat Treats

Many commercial dog treats are high in fat and artificial ingredients. Cucumbers offer a natural, healthy alternative.

Potential Risks of Feeding Cucumbers to Dogs

While cucumbers are generally safe for dogs, there

are a few potential risks to be aware of:

1. Digestive Upset

Too much cucumber can lead to gas, bloating, or diarrhea. Start with small portions and observe how your dog reacts.

2. Choking Hazard

Large or improperly cut pieces can become a choking risk, particularly for smaller breeds.

3. Pesticides and Chemicals

Non-organic cucumbers may have pesticide residues on their skin. Always wash cucumbers thoroughly and consider peeling them if you are unsure about the source.

4. Pickled Cucumbers

Pickles, which are cucumbers preserved in brine, vinegar, and spices, are not safe for dogs. The high salt content and potential inclusion of harmful spices make them unsuitable.

How to Incorporate Cucumbers into Your Dog’s Diet

If your dog enjoys cucumbers and tolerates them well, Arnold suggests several ways to incorporate them into their diet:

1. As a Simple Treat Slice fresh cucumber into thin, bite-sized pieces and serve them as a snack.

• Interactive Play: Activities like fetch or tug-ofwar can provide physical exercise and strengthen the bond between the dog and its owner. Training dogs to walk on their hind legs may seem like a harmless and entertaining activity, but it poses significant health risks that cannot be overlooked. The anatomical structure of dogs is not suited for bipedal movement, leading to various injuries and long-term health issues. It is crucial for dog owners and trainers to prioritize the well-being of their pets by avoiding practices that can cause harm. Instead, focusing on activities that promote natural behaviors and physical health will ensure that dogs lead happy, healthy lives.

3. Mix with Regular Food

Add small pieces of cucumber to your dog’s regular meals for added texture and nutrition.

4. Training Rewards Use small cucumber pieces as a low-calorie reward during training sessions.

When Not to Feed Cucumbers to Dogs

There are certain situations where feeding cucumbers to your dog might not be advisable.

BTS JUNGKOOK WRITES FANS A HEARTFELT NEW YEAR MESSAGE

KOREAN idol Jungkook , one of the members of the K-pop powerhouse BTS took to his social media account to share his New Year’s message with his fans.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Jungkook took the time to take a break from his military duties and went to fan community platform Weverse, expressing his anticipation of reuniting with ARMY following his military service.

“I’m a bit late with my New Year’s greetings. This is the year of discharge, and also the year we meet, ARMY. But it doesn’t feel like there’s a big change in my heart. As always, I just have a heart full of wanting to see you,” he wrote.

Reflecting on his time in the military, Jungkook expressed a desire to grow for the sake of his fans.

“If there’s something I want to hurry up and do, it’s spending time learning a variety of things and dedicating myself to growth for ARMY,” Jungkook continued.

“Time seems to pass quickly. I wish it would move even faster. I miss you so much that it feels a bit overwhelming,” he added. He also conveyed warm wishes for his fans’ well-being.

“I hope you all receive lots of blessings, and I wish tonight feels like the New Year hasn’t started off too badly for you. Even though people can’t avoid feeling pain, I hope you feel just a little less of it, even if only a tiny bit,” the “Seven” hitmaker stated. Jungkook enlisted in December 2023 alongside fellow BTS member Jimin and is currently serving as a cook in the Army’s 5th Infantry Division.

All seven members, including Suga , RM , and V —of BTS are expected to complete their military service by 2025, and reportedly with plans of having their world tour in 2026.

Taylor Swift has claimed the top spot on Billboard ’s “Top Artists of the 21st Century” chart, solidifying her status as a global pop phenomenon.

The list is based on two decades of data from the Billboard 200 album chart and the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, spanning from January 2000 to December 2024.

Taylor’s record-breaking achievements were central to her rise to the top. With 14 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, she now holds the record for the most chart-toppers by any female artist in history. Her achievement also extends to singles, with 12 No. 1 hits on the Hot 100, including tracks from her 2022 blockbuster album Midnights . That release saw her make history as the first artist to occupy all 10 top spots on the Hot 100 simultaneously—a feat she surpassed in May 2024 when her

eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, claimed the top 14 positions. Released in April 2024, her latest album shattered records, earning 2.61 million equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week. It also set new standards for vinyl sales, moving 859,000 copies in seven days, while its tracks garnered a staggering 891.37 million on-demand streams.

The “Blank Space” singer also capped off her monumental year with the conclusion of her historic Eras Tour in December 2024. The tour became the first in history to gross $2 billion globally, drawing fans from across the world for over three hours of careerspanning performances at each show. Her setlists celebrated her evolution as an artist, with hits like “Cruel Summer,” “Love Story,” “Lavender Haze,” and “Anti-Hero” electrifying crowds night after night. Angelica Villanueva

FOR singer-songwriter Marion Aunor and her sister, Ashley Aunor, a producer, launching a record label wasn’t just about providing a platform for music—it was about reshaping the essence of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) culture.

Before the year 2024 ended, the duo officially launched Wild Dream Records, an affiliate of Viva, with a lineup of artists as diverse as their visions for the label’s future.

“We don’t want Wild Dream Records to just be a record label. We want it to be part of OPM pop culture. Imagine a Wild Dream Records festival—something like a Coachella or Wanderland vibe here in the Philippines. A festival with not just music, but also art on the side, supporting local painters and collaborating with artists in other industries,” said Ashley.

The label boasts a promising roster, each artist carving a niche in the industry. Matt Wilson, also known as The Beat Whisperer, brings rhythmic innovation, while Minimal Days is the Master of Mood, crafting atmospheric soundscapes. Pecado channels his charisma as The Dark Charmer, Preza ignites with fiery passion as The Firestarter, Bianca Denise mesmerizes as The Soulful Poet, and Midnight Talking energizes with their Groovy Basslines. For Marion, the weight of artists entrusting their dreams to Wild Dream Records is both thrilling and daunting.

“For sure, it’s scary. We’re asking them to believe in us, to sign with us. But we always remind them that being signed isn’t the end-all-be-all. It’s a collaborative effort. It’s not just the label doing all the work—it’s a partnership,” Marion told Manila Standard Entertainment.

She then emphasized the importance of artists being proactive, especially in today’s social media-driven landscape.

“It’s hard to book artists who aren’t active online. Fans usually follow the artists’ pages, not the label, so they need to make efforts too—even with behind-the-scenes stuff,” she added.

When it comes to the songwriting process of their artists, Marion explained that songwriting is deeply personal, but she strives to maintain an artist’s authenticity.

“It depends on the songs they submit. Sometimes, I see a song and know it can soar even more, so I’ll add melodic hooks or the one million layers. But the bigger chunk is up to the artist—I don’t want to take away their voice. But it’s Ashley who handles all the production, bringing everything together,” continued Marion.

Wild Dream Records is not just about music—it’s a bold step toward creating a multi-dimensional platform for young Filipino talents. By bridging music, art, and culture, Marion and Ashley “It’s scary. But things that are worth it are scary.
