TriComm summons ‘influencers’

Panel co-chair warns disinformation has nat'l security impact

THE House of Representatives invited 40 social media personalities and other “influencers” to serve as resource persons at its first hearing to probe how fake news and disinformation are disseminated via the internet.

Tits investigation into the 2020 murder of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary Wesley Barayuga.

General Rommel Francisco Mar bil said he ordered the reopening of the cold case after whistleblower Police Lt. Col. Santie Mendoza told the House Quad Committee that he helped carry out the killing at the behest of ex-PCSO general manager Royina Garma. Mendoza narrated before congressmen how Garma allegedly facilitated the PCSO official’s roadside assassination on July 30, 2020 by providing the necessary information about his schedule, details about his vehicle and the funding necessary to carry it out.

The whistleblower also implicated incumbent National Police Commissioner Edilberto Leonardo in the planning of the murder.

Barayuga was a retired police general and lawyer who supposedly threatened to expose corruption within the PCSO shortly before he was shot dead in Mandaluyong City.

Garma, herself an ex-police Lt. Colonel, allegedly gained the top spot at the PCSO because of her in-

Yang's lawyer mocks probers amid heated inquiry

THE legal counsel of Chinese businessman Tony Yang sought to disparage lawmakers’ conclusions about his client’s supposedly sketchy past and his alleged ties with Philippine Overseas Gaming Operators (POGOs) and even organized crime.

Lawyer Raymond Fortun questioned the House Quad Committee’s impartiality and its ability to pin Chinese national Yang down for ay wrongdoing in a real criminal court.

“I am very interested in how they [Quad Comm members] can prove this criminal network in court. In Congress, lawmakers act as both prosecutor and judge,” he said.

Fortun, a lawyer who often finds himself at the center high-profile cases, apparently sought to mock congressmen, calling their probe “unacceptable.”

However, House members argued they did not come by their suspicions about Yang recklessly.

The chairman of the committee on public order and safety underscored the need to protect Filipinos from false information intended to mislead and divide.

“The Filipino people have the right to know the truth. We have to protect our countrymen against disinformation that could sow fear and disunity,” Fernandez said.

“In Sabina Shoal, there are at least they have broadcast on. We suspect there are other ships out there, still running dark. So they turned off their automatic information systems and we’ve got some evidence of those that have been out but we can’t count them because they are hard to see,” Powell added.

The presence of the Chinese intruders were confirmed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), which dispatched sea and air assets to drive away two CCG vessels spotted 34 nautical miles off the coast of Pangasinan province Sunday morning.

The CCG ships were spotted within the Philippines' 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone using its Dark Vessel Detection program.

Soon after detecting the intruders, PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan ordered a Coast Guard BN-2 Islander aircraft to visually identify the CCG vessels and initiate a radio challenge.

“At around 9:30 AM today, the PCG aircraft confirmed the illegal presence of the China Coast Guard vessels, identified by bow numbers 3301 and 3104. Notably, the CCG vessels did not respond to the radio challenge issued by the PCG,” the PCG wrote in its statement. Two 44-meter PCG vessels, BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409) and BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410), have been dispatched to Bolinao, Pangasinan to address the Chinese incursion.

“[The ships are] to address the illegal presence of the China Coast Guard and reinforce the Philippine government's position against the normalization of illegal patrols by the People's Republic of China (PRC) within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” the PCG also said.

On Saturday, the CCG’s 541-foot long "monster ship" sailed deeper inside Philippine waters after a smaller Chinese vessel was successfully re-

National Police, and the Department of Justice, are expected to attend the hearing and discuss regulatory challenges and enforcement mechanisms against online disinformation.

Fernandez said the inquiry seeks to identify weaknesses in existing laws and policies governing digital platforms and propose solutions to ensure public access to accurate and reliable information.

He pointed out that this is the House’s response to deliberate misinformation campaigns that exploit digital platforms for political or financial gain.

Lawmakers seek to explore measures that will strengthen platform accountability, impose penalties for repeat offenders, and improve digital literacy programs to help Filipinos critically evaluate online content.

The hearing will be live-streamed for public viewing in hopes it will spark a national conversation on responsible online discourse and the role of social media in shaping public perception, the Laguna solon said.

PCG Spokesperson for West Philippine Sea (WPS) Commodore Jay Tarriela, said that CCG 3304 was successfully pushed away from the coastline of Zambales by the BRP Teresa Magbanua only to be replaced by CCG-5901.

“Despite this, the PCG is effectively maintaining a distance of approximately 110-115 nautical miles from the coast of Zambales,” Tarriela said in a statement.

Tariella noted that the crew of BRP Teresa Magbanua displayed exceptional courage and determination, undeterred by the imposing presence of the massive CCG-5901.

As this developed, Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said that the suspected foreign spies recently apprehended appear to have integrated themselves into society.

The BI Chief said that they have conducted an investigation into the records of the alleged spies and found that they have all been here for decades.

“Some have been here as early as 2002. They have been holding legal statuses, and have lived in the country for a long time before they were found to be doing suspicious activities by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” he said.

Viado said that some of the suspects had working visas linked to companies in San Juan and Manila, while others were married to Filipinas.

He also urged citizens to report to authorities any suspicious activities of foreign nationals that might be detrimental to national security.

Meanwhile, the NBI’s Cybercrime Division said the alleged Chinese agents arrested in the country last week had been spying on power plants, power grids, and substations operated by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.

They were also monitoring Ulugan Oyster Bay and Buliluyan Port in Bataraza, Palawan, using CCTV surveillance, the agency disclosed.

“We’re ready to release the stocks, but I think we’ll hold off a bit before making them available to the LGUs for public sale,” he added.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) previously indicated that NFA rice could be distributed as early as February 4, though the timeline for distribution will depend on local government decisions.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. earlier confirmed that his office has received a resolution from the National Price Coordinating Council recommending the emergency declaration.

If the declaration is approved, it would enable the NFA to release buffer stocks and begin purchasing rice from farmers during the upcoming harvest season. Lacson shared that the initial release will be 300,000 sacks, with the potential to increase to 450,000 to 500,000 sacks, depending on demand

“We must improve access to statesubsidized medical schooling if we want to produce a greater number of Doctor of Medicine graduates in the years ahead,” he added.

Libanan said the seven SUCs currently offering a doctor of medicine program are the University of the Philippines, Mariano Marcos State University, University of Northern Philippines, Cagayan State University, Bicol University, West Visayas State University and the Mindanao State University, he said.

NFA rice will be sold to LGUs at P36 per kilo and to consumers at P38 per kilo, with strict price regulations to prevent retailers from exceeding these amounts.

The National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC) earlier approved the proposal of the DA to declare a food emergency.

The DA intends to declare a food security emergency on February 4 to address the soaring prices of rice.

Once declared, the government will release rice stocks to be sold to local government units in Metro Manila.

“Releasing 300,000 metric tons of rice to the market within six months will soften market prices. We hope this will be the start of a more stable pricing for rice,” Tiu-Laurel explained.

The declaration would make NFA rice available to consumers at P38 per kilogram in wet markets, it was disclosed.

The DA has pushed for this measure to help stem the rising retail prices of rice, which is a staple in the Filipino diet.

Goods from China, which already face various rates of duties, will see an additional 10 percent tariff.

As this developed, Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines (FBA) president Robert Young weighed in on the recent decision by President Donald Trump to increase tariffs on imported goods from Mexico, Canada, and China.

While the move is seen as a strategy to address concerns related to drug cartels, migration, and trade imbalances, Young emphasized that it is unlikely to have a significant immediate impact on Philippine exports to the US.

“There is no rationale for the US to impose similar tariffs on the Philippines. If they did, they would risk running out of supply for essential goods in their stores, which would ultimately harm their economy,” he said.

According to Young, the cost of manufacturing goods such as undergarments or T-shirts in the US is significantly higher compared to countries like China, Bangladesh, or the Philippines.

“Just to produce one basic undergarment in the US would be nearly eight times more expensive than in countries like China or the Philippines. Can you imagine the cost of a T-shirt in the US being $12, while it would cost as little as $2 to produce the same product in Vietnam or Bangladesh?” Young explained.

“The US is highly reliant on imports from these countries, and imposing tariffs would only escalate the cost of living for American consumers,” he added.

Trump's orders on Saturday also suspended exemptions allowing low-value imports from the three countries to enter the US duty-free.

The announcement threatens upheaval across supply chains, from energy to automobiles to food.

Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act in imposing the tariffs, with the White House saying "the extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, constitutes a national emergency."

The aim is to hold all three countries "accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country," the White House added.

China's commerce ministry said in a statement it would take "corresponding countermeasures" and file a claim against Washington at the World Trade Organization.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her country would impose retaliatory tariffs. Sheinbaum said she had told her economy minister "to implement Plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico's interests."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who spoke with Sheinbaum, separately said his country would hit back with 25 percent levies of its own on select American goods worth Can$155 billion (US$106.6 billion), with a first round on Tuesday followed by a second one in three weeks. With AFP

‘Oplan Katok’ not meant for intimidation

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP)

chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Mar-

bil on Sunday said that the PNP’s Oplan Revitalized Katok is meant to encourage firearm owners to renew their registration or to hand over their firearms for safekeeping.

Marbil also said these operations are not meant for “political intimidation” and will just help the PNP enforce the election gun ban.

The operations--which the PNP said is among its best practices in gun control-involve police officers making house visits and delivering formal notices for gun owners to renew their licenses or to deposit their guns with the police.

“Revitalized Katok is a year-round initiative to ensure firearm holders comply with the law. It is not, and will never be, used for political purposes,” Marbil said in a statement Sunday.

“The goal is simple—to keep communities safe and prevent loose firearms from being used in crimes. This program has effectively reduced the number of unregistered firearms in circulation, thereby lowering the potential for gun-related violence,” he added.

Marbil also said the operations are in line with Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, which requires the renewal of gun permits every five or ten years, depending on the validity of the license.

Marbil said concerns raised by Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman George Erwin Garcia have “no factual basis,” adding that the PNP has been conducting the operations for years.

DOH: 95% immunization for kids

THE Department of Health (DOH), alongside UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), announced a plan to achieve 95% immunization coverage for children by 2025.

This initiative was highlighted during the recently concluded 2nd National Immunization Summit.

“Throughout this summit, we have celebrated significant milestones; achieving higher vaccination coverage, implementing innovative delivery systems, and expanding access to vaccines across communities,” said DOH Secre -

tary Teodoro Herbosa.

“The vision we share is of a country where every individual, regardless of circumstance, has equitable access to vaccines; a vision rooted in equity and resilience,” he added.

Marciano leads list of appointees waiting

SURIGAO del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel on Sunday said Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) director general Joel Joseph Marciano Jr. leads the list of 319 presidential appointees awaiting confirmation from the Commission on Appointments before Congress adjourns later this week.

The National Immunization Acceleration Plan for 2024-2025 includes several innovative strategies to improve vaccination access and data management.

In Region 12, coalition-building efforts have secured ₱70 million in funding for vaccination initiatives while Region 3 has implemented the Reaching Every Purok (REP) strategy to expand immunization access in remote areas.

Additionally, Santiago City in Cagayan Valley strengthened its cold chain management to ensure vaccine quality and in Cavite, the Bakuna Enumerator Application (BenApp) has improved vaccination

data management significantly.

In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Muslim leaders are actively promoting immunization within their communities.

UNICEF Acting Representative Behzad Noubary stated that integrating immunization into broader health strategies is vital for protecting vulnerable populations.

“Together, let’s build a coalition of immunization champions and invest in all pillars of immunization – from leadership and governance; service delivery; cold chain, logistics, and supply; to and demand generation,” he said.

Villanueva to admin: Certify wage hike bill as urgent

SENATOR Joel Villanueva called on the administration to certify the proposed wage hike bill as urgent, stressing the need to uplift the standard of living for Filipino workers.

“The window for the 19th Congress is slowly closing, which is why we need to speed up discussions and ensure the bill’s enactment before we adjourn,” the senator said. Villanueva, who chairs the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment, and Human Resource Development, said the country’s economic growth must translate into better wages.

The Philippine economy grew by 5.6% in 2024, but Villanueva noted that this progress has yet to benefit many workers struggling with rising costs.

Senate Bill No. 2534, also known as the P100 Minimum Wage Hike Increase bill, was approved on third reading in February 2024. Villanueva co-authored the measure and welcomed ongoing deliberations on its counterpart bill in the House of Representatives.

“At the end of the day, what is important is that we can match our workers’ wages to the living wage,” he said. In addition to Senate Bill No. 2534, Villanueva filed Senate Bill No. 2140, which seeks to establish a national standard for a living wage. Ram Superable

SENATOR Loren Legarda filed Senate Bill 2964, proposing a rewards system for long-time contributors to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

The bill seeks to establish the “PhilHealth Member Recognition Program” (PMRP), which will implement a pointsbased rewards system.

Under the program, members can redeem points for additional healthcare services, payment of out-of-pocket costs, preventive care incentives, and even non-medical health-related needs. A PMRP Benefit Fund will be created to finance these rewards. The fund will be supported by regular contributions, reserve funds, grants, donations, government allocations, and investment earnings.

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is happy with the results of the Social Weather Stations’ fourth quarter of 2024 survey, showing 59 percent of adult Filipinos are satisfied with the general performance of the administration of President Marcos.

Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group on Sunday credited the favorable approval rating to the whole-of-nation approach of the Marcos administration.

“As the lead agency in social protection, the DSWD expressed its commitment to enhancing the implementation of social protection programs to better serve the disadvantaged and marginalized Filipinos,” said Dumlao who is concurrent DSWD spokesperson.

Based on the SWS report, helping victims of disasters got +65 in December 2024 (up by three points from +62 in September 2024); improving the quality of children’s education got +60 in December 2024 (unchanged since September 2024), and helping the poor got +57 in December 2024 (up by 6 points from +51 in September 2024).

“malicious and defamatory not only to the police organization but also of the Office of the President.”

“We will not allow individuals or groups to malign the name and integrity of the PNP and the government,”he said.

Remulla also said the video was edited to deliberately mislead viewers into believing that police and army personnel are now exempted from taking the mandatory drug and psychology tests.

“Let me emphasize that the exemption granted to PNP personnel only applies exclusively to their application for a new or renewal of license to own and possess firearms. This exemption is granted in recognition of the regular

and comprehensive drug and neuropsychological testing they already undergo as part of their service, including annual screenings and mandatory testing during specialized courses and training,” Remulla explained.

“Given the thorough evaluations and strict monitoring they are subjected to, requiring another round of drug testing would be redundant and counterproductive, as it undermines the PNP’s efforts to streamline the process, improve operational efficiency, and reduce unnecessary procedural burdens,” he added.

The secretary appealed to the public to use social media correctly and ensure that its content is always true and accurate.

OPINION

An issue that refuses to die

FEW people really understand what the national budget is, more so how it is crafted and finally signed into law.

A former budget commissioner under Ramon F. Magsaysay, and finance secretary under Carlos P. Garcia, then senator of the realm before martial law was declared, Dominador Aytona later became president of the Philippine Banking Corporation.

An economist and lawyer, he was one of the greatest minds Bicolandia has contributed to government, and was active in the political movement against the dictatorship even before Ninoy Aquino was murdered in the tarmac. He was a senator when the Senate was truly august.

It was he who described the budget as the “economic program of government written in pesos and centavos.”

These days, and particularly for the current year, the pesos and centavos in the bicameral conference committee report contained blanks in lieu of pesos and centavos.

The president did some minor corrections in the enrolled GAB during the holidays and finally signed the General Appropriations Act on Rizal Day 2024. It is now his economic program for this year.

This writer as well as many others, in print, broadcast or social media, have described the process and the product crafted by the legislature, in particular the bicam machinations of the Elizaldy Co-Grace Poe led committee, as careless, criminal, and corrupt.

What astounds me is why the President is taking up the cudgels for this most corrupt budget when it is not his fault but that of the evil geniuses in Congress. The issue thus refuses to die.

He was presented with an enrolled bill where the blanks in the bicameral committee’s output was approved without reading in Congress, later filled in by what Stella Quimbo, the economist who wants to be mayor (hopefully not) of the right-thinking citizens of Marikina, has blamed on unnamed TWG staff whose responsibility is limited to correcting typographical errors before the GAB was printed.

The President has been quite defensive, first erroneously confusing the signed GAA with the bicam report where the blanks were exposed by Sid Ungab and FPRRD to the extent of calling his predecessor a “liar.”

Then, as the furor over the “mahiwagang budget” first exposed in a privilege speech by the president’s sister, Imee Marcos, raised more and more questions while the leaders of Congress and the chairs of the bicam committee maintained Sphinx-like silence, ES Bersamin rightly tossed the ball for Congress to explain. The decapitation of Elizaldy Co as chair of the powerful appropriations committee by motion of the president’s

Sandro, mismo, clearly meant Malacanang was most displeased. Yet the president kept defending a budget mangled by Congress, a national expenditure program that he and his economic managers crafted as the 2025 economic program of the nation.

Till now, he maintains that he has found no blank items in the enrolled bill received by Malacanang, even as no one has accused him or his Cabinet of filling in the blanks.

He has astonishingly claimed to have gone over all the 4045 pages of the GAB, and seen none of the “damned blank items,” yet saying “we’ll keep looking.” For what? I wonder.

—“—

Why is the President taking the cudgels for the cupidity of the legislators? Is it because he thinks they can deliver his dream of a 12-0 shut-out for his Alyansa senators?

And in what some quarters interpret as a veiled threat aimed at the Supreme Court, upon which his former executive secretary and campaign “kingmaker” Vic Rodriguez and Sid Ungab threw the hot potato for constitutional infirmity, the President says an adverse decision would “close government down.”

This writer does not think the President, with his conflict-averse character, is threatening our highest magistrates especially with an ES who was once SC chief justice.

It was to my mind a mistake, thinking in terms of the US of A where our president lived for quite some time, where a “hung” budget closes the financial tap on the federal government.

As his ES well knows, a re-enacted budget kicks in once the 2025 budget is stalled either by a presidential veto or a stand-off with Congress, or even an adverse decision on its Constitutionality by the high tribunal.

Definitely, it will not result in closing down government operations, as the President charged.

Why is the President taking the cudgels for the cupidity of the legislators? Is it because he thinks they can deliver his dream of a 12-0 shut-out for his Alyansa senators?

Contemporary history has shown that local candidates do not matter to senatorial choices as much as image, real or crafted, does.

The President could be better served by those closest to him.

International cooperation for protection and prosperity

FOR Filipinos, the vast waters surrounding our archipelago are more than just stretches of blue on a map—they are lifelines of livelihood, security, and national identity.

With thousands of islands scattered across strategic trade routes and teeming with marine biodiversity, our nation has much to gain—or lose—depending on how well we navigate the complex and often turbulent waters of international geopolitics.

The good news? We don’t have to do it alone.

During a maritime security forum organized by the Stratbase Institute and the French Embassy, the envoys highlighted their nations’ ongoing partnerships with the Philippines, citing military exercises, joint defense initiatives, and economic cooperation as key strategies to enhance regional security. Australia, the European Union, France, Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia reaffirmed their maritime cooperation with the Philippines, emphasizing the need for peace, stability, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific.

The ambassadors underscored the importance of upholding international law, particularly UNCLOS, to safeguard sovereignty and trade in the region

Let’s start with security. Our territorial waters have long been vulnerable to a range of threats, from

illicit trade, and illegal fishing to daily territorial encroachments by Chinese vessels.

But through strategic partnerships with regional and global allies, we gain access to invaluable defense capabilities.

The Philippines must strengthen its position as a maritime power that contributes to regional peace

Joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and technology transfers enhance our ability to respond to threats swiftly and decisively.

Strengthening cooperation with naval forces and coast guards from likeminded nations not only deters potential aggressors but also ensures that Filipino fishers and coastal communities can go about their daily lives without fear.

The security of our waters is deeply intertwined with economic stability.

The Philippines’ maritime domain is a lifeline of trade that has become a geopolitical flashpoint. Our ports and shipping lanes serve as critical arteries for the

Respecting the electorate

TWELVE senatorial hopefuls participated in last Saturday’s debate organized by GMA News. Tanong ng Bayan, which is accessible on social media for those who have not yet seen it, featured different formats for the candidates to answer questions thrown at them by the moderator, panel members, and select representatives of various sectors.

The questions covered many topics, from corruption in government, confidential funds, random drug testing, red tagging, POGOs, the West Philippine Sea, the International Criminal Court, to climate change, among others.

Disruptions at sea—whether due to security threats or regulatory conflicts— can lead to higher costs, supply chain bottlenecks, and economic instability that directly impact the everyday lives of Filipinos, from rising food prices to job losses.

By working alongside nations committed to upholding a rules-based order, we create a more predictable and stable maritime environment.

Trade agreements, investments in port infrastructure, and technology-sharing initiatives enhance the competitiveness of our shipping industry, opening up new opportunities for Filipino businesses and workers.

A safer and more efficient maritime trade network means more jobs, lower costs of goods, and stronger economic resilience—benefits that touch every household, from the fishermen in Palawan to the entrepreneurs and ordinary consumers of the country.

Let there be judgment for those candidates who think they have little else to prove.

Debates are always a good way to assess the fitness of candidates beyond their prominent last names, camera-ready smiles, and catchy slogans dreamed up by their respective teams. They also afford the public the opportunity to see whether candidates actually know the work demanded of the office they are seeking, are knowledgeable about the issues that need addressing, and even answer questions about their own integrity.

Phrasing the questions fairly and

another critical area where international partnerships must work on.

The Philippines is blessed with some of the world’s richest marine biodiversity, but this wealth is under threat from overfishing, pollution, and climate change.

Marine ecosystems have no political borders and for these to remain a source of livelihood and sustenance for future generations requires a global approach.

Collaborations in marine conservation, research, and sustainable fisheries management allow us to tap into leading-edge technologies and best practices from around the world. Agreements on responsible fishing practices help protect fish stocks, ensuring that our fisherfolk—many of whom rely on these waters for survival—have a stable and sustainable source of income.

Joint environmental initiatives, such as coral reef restoration and marine pollution mitigation programs, not only preserve our aquatic resources but also strengthen eco-tourism, an industry that supports millions of Filipinos.

The most compelling reason for fostering international cooperation is that

instantly checking the veracity of claims made during the debate have room for improvement, but perhaps the next development the public will await is the participation of more candidates, especially those who have the advantage of already being among the likely winners. Or is this the very reason for their smugness, their refusal to bring their platforms to the people and to address questions thrown at them by a public so desperate for answers?

Does their good survey showing or their affiliation with powerful forces justify their belief that they will get by with a wave, a smile, and a slew of motherhood statements, and have to do little else?

But they must do one thing. They must accord the electorate some respect. They must give voters credit for wanting elections to be based on issues, not personalities. Enough of the condescending notion that the masses can be had by song and dance numbers, tired cliches, false hopes, and some form of ayuda. Let there be more debates and let there be judgment for those candidates who think they have little else to prove.

it empowers us. Strategic alliances reinforce our position as a key player in the global maritime space.

The Philippines does not stand alone; we are part of a network of nations that share our values and vision for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future. This approach reflects a clear path forward for the Philippines—one where international cooperation serves as a cornerstone for national resilience and prosperity.

The road ahead will have more challenges, but by embracing international collaboration, the Philippines is charting a course toward a more secure, economically vibrant, and environmentally sustainable future. Whether it’s through defense agreements that protect our sovereignty, trade partnerships that fuel our economy, or conservation efforts that safeguard our seas, the Philippines must strengthen its position as a maritime power that contributes to regional peace, and ensures that its vast maritime domain remains a source of security and opportunity for all Filipinos.

IN BRIEF

Thousands of Argentines march for diversity

BUENOS AIRES – Thousands of Argentines took to f Buenos Aires Saturday in defense of hard-fought diversity advances and to denounce recent anti-”woke” pronouncements by President Javier Milei. The colorful procession held aloft the rainbow flag and waved placards stating: “Not a step back” as it marched on the Plaza de Mayo square that houses the presidency. The march was organized by women’s and LGBTQ rights groups with the backing of powerful trade unions and opposition politicians.

It was called in response to statements made by self-declared “anarcho-capitalist” Milei to the World Economic Forum in Davos in which he slammed “the mental virus of woke ideology.” Milei had also spoken out against “radical feminism” and “gender ideology” -- a term used by social conservatives opposed to gender inclusivity. His administration insisted Milei was the victim of “malicious interpretation,” but his statements were met with indignation across Argentine society, including on the political right. AFP

Netanyahu to begin Gaza truce talks

JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will begin talks on a second phase to the Gaza ceasefire in Washington on Monday (Tuesday in Manila), his office said hours after the completion of the fourth hostage-prisoner exchange of the truce.

Netanyahu spoke with the US President’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on Sunday and agreed that negotiations would “begin when they meet in Washington”. A date for formal talks involving mediators and delegations from Hamas and Israel has not been set, with the 42-day first phase due to end next month.

Netanyahu’s office said Witkoff would talk to Qatar and Egypt, key mediators, before discussing with the Israeli premier “steps to advance the negotiations, including dates for delegations to leave for talks”. AFP

Russia, Ukraine trade blame for school attack

POLTAVA, Ukraine – Kyiv and Moscow traded blame on Sunday for a strike on a school in a Ukrainian-occupied town in Russia’s Kursk region, while Kyiv also said weekend missile and drone attacks killed at least 15 people in Ukraine.

Fighting in the nearly three-year war has shown no signs of de-escalating, despite US President Donald Trump’s promise to enact a ceasefire within “24 hours” of taking office on January 20. Russia and Ukraine have each accused the other of killing civilians since the war began, with the latest blame exchanged over Sudzha, a Ukrainian-occupied town near the border. The Ukrainian Air Force said on Sunday that four people were killed in an attack the previous day on a three-story former school building sheltering evacuated civilians, with dozens more fished from the rubble. Iran unveils latest ballistic missile in public show of force

TEHRAN – Iran revealed a new ballistic missile on Sunday that it said was capable of traveling 1,700 kilometers, unveiling it in a Tehran ceremony attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian.

State television broadcast images of the missile, dubbed Etemad, or “trust” in Persian, saying it had a maximum range of 1,700 kilometres (1,056 miles) and was “the most recent ballistic missile” built by the Iranian defence ministry.

Western countries have grown concerned over advances in Iran’s ballistic missile programme, accusing it of destabilizing the Middle East.

Iran’s missiles, including this newest design, are capable of reaching its archfoe Israel, which it targeted twice last year as the Gaza war spilled over.

“The development of defense capabilities and space technologies... aims to ensure that no country dares to attack Iranian territory,” Pezeshkian said in a televised address.

The ceremony took place on Iran’s national aerospace day and a few days before the 46th anniversary of the creation of the Islamic republic on February 10, 1979.

Since the return of US President Donald Trump -- who pursued a “maximum

pressure” approach to Iran in his first term -- Tehran has made multiple shows of force, including large-scale military exercises and the presentation of underground military bases. At the same time, Tehran has signalled its willingness to restart negotiations over its nuclear program, which has been the subject of tensions with Western countries for decades.

Meanwhile, the government of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region said Sunday that US military strikes in the Golis mountains had killed “key figures” in the Islamic State group.

US President Donald Trump announced the air strike late Saturday, posting on the Truth Social platform that he had ordered “precision military air strikes on the senior ISIS at-

tack planner and other terrorists” in Somalia.

IS has a relatively small presence in Somalia compared to the Al-Qaedalinked Al-Shabaab, but experts have warned of growing activity. The strikes were carried out in a northern region of Somalia, where the Puntland Defence Forces have been carrying out operations against IS since December. The radical group is said to have established a presence in the Golis mountains.

“Recent airstrikes have led to the neutralization of key figures within ISIS, marking a significant advancement as we progress into the second phase of our operation,” the regional government said Sunday, using an alternative name for the IS group.AFP

Rubio debuts in Panama as Trump threatens to take canal

PANAMA CITY – Marco Rubio arrived in Panama Saturday (Sunday in Manila) on his debut trip abroad as US secretary of state, as he looks for how to follow up on President Donald Trump’s extraordinary threat to seize the Panama Canal.

Rubio’s mission came as Trump imposed steep tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China -- another step showing a far more aggressive US foreign policy.

Rubio will travel later to four other small Latin American countries for an agenda focused on migration, a highly

unusual first trip for the top US diplomat, whose predecessors were more likely to start the job with language of cooperation with major allies.

Trump has refused to rule out military force to seize the Panama Canal, which the United States handed over at the end of 1999, saying that China has exerted too much control through its investment in surrounding ports.

In his inaugural address, Trump said that the United States will be “taking it back” -- and he refused to back down Friday.

Jailed far-right activist sparks rival demonstrations in London

LONDON – Thousands of supporters of jailed far-right agitator Tommy Robinson marched in London Saturday demanding his release, while police deployed to keep them apart from a large counter-protest.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk posted a message of support on his online platform X, his latest intervention in support of Europe’s far right.

Robinson, 42, is serving an 18-month jail term imposed in October after he admitted breaching a 2021 High Court injunction.

Protesters organized under the name

“Stop the Isolation” and “Unite the Kingdom” gathered outside Waterloo railway station before heading towards parliament.

Many waved England flags, with one reading “stop the boats”, while others wore red hats carrying the initials MEGA (Make England Great Again), a variation

on US President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan.

“Tommy Robinson shouldn’t be in prison, he is a political prisoner,” protester Liz, 55, from Birmingham in central England, told AFP, declining to give her last name.

“This country needs someone like Trump. He is strong, he is getting rid of illegals,” she added.

The crowds sang Robinson’s name, along with “Rule Britannia”, as they started the march towards the prime minister’s residence in Downing Street. Some protesters held placards reading “end state-sanctioned persecution”, “Free Tommy” and “UK, stop the rape of white children”, in reference to a “grooming gangs” scandal in which thousands of girls around the country were sexually abused. Globalport, Romero to vie in US Open Polo tourney

THE Philippine flag will fly for the first time at the 2025 US Open Polo Championship when Rep. Mikee Romero and his Globalport Polo team face off against the world’s best in Wellington, Florida.

Globalport will be making history as the first team based in Asia to compete in this renowned championship from March 24 to April 20, 2025. For the first time, the tournament will feature a Filipino and a team carrying the Philippine flag.

The team’s qualification signals the growing influence of the Philippines in international polo and is expected to bring new excitement to the sport in the country and the Southeast Asian region.

It will not be the first time Romero, a three-term congressman and one of the country’s most prominent sportsmen and SEA Games bronze medalist will play under the Philippine tricolors. He has represented the country in several international polo competitions, but it will be the first time he plays in the sport’s biggest stage.

Romero, a former varsity basketball player, has been a leading figure in Philippine sports with his involvement in basketball, cycling, shooting, volleyball, and polo, among others. He was elected party-list representative of 1-Pacman in 2016. His business interests include ports operations, airlines, and power.

“It’s a big honor for me to represent the country in this US Open,” said Romero, who will be serving out his third term as 1-Pacman party list representative this year. “While qualifying for the US Open is accomplishment enough, we hope to make an impact on the competition as we mount a challenge on the dominance of the established powers of the polo world.”

Globalport Polo enters the 2025 competition with a formidable lineup, spearheaded by one of the best players in the world — Argentina’s Barto Castagnola.

Ranked No. 2 globally, Castagnola comes off an impressive victory in the Argentine Open and the UK Gold Cup. His experience and skill will be invaluable to the team, which also includes 17year-old prodigy Beltran Laughle, a 6-goaler who is making a name for himself as one of the sport’s most promising young talents.

Rounding out the team is Lucas Alberdi, an

American-born player known for his strategic approach and solid performance on the field.

The US Polo Open, organized by the United States Polo Association (USPA), is the most prestigious polo tournament globally, boasting of a rich 120-year history. Held annually in Wellington, the 22-goal competition attracts the world’s finest polo players.

The 2024 US Polo Open championship, which

served as the backdrop for the Netflix series Polo, has generated widespread interest in the game.

The series, produced by Prince Harry and Meghan of Sussex, UK, offered an inside look at the intense competition and drama surrounding the event, further cementing the US Polo Open’s reputation as the sport’s premier showcase.

Creamline’s Pons named PVL Player of the Week

CREAMLINE retains its immaculate record after seven starts in the 2024-2025 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference all thanks to Bernadeth Pons’ consistent stellar performance. In a talent-rich wing rotation, Pons continues to shine for the reigning champions Cool Smashers with her offensive efficiency and solid floor defense.

When Creamline blew a two-set lead against a feisty Cignal side, it was Pons who came to the rescue and restored order for a thrilling, 2519, 26-24, 23-25, 23-25, 15-9, escape Saturday night at the Philsports Arena.

The 2024 Reinforced Conference Most Valuable Player delivered the biggest blows in the fifth set on her way to finishing with 27 points off 24 kills, two aces, and a block to go with 14 excellent digs.

“Noong fifth set hindi na namin inisip na down two sets kami. Parang zero-zero na kasi. Ang ganda lang nung fifth set kasi parang bumalik yung energy ng team, kasi nawala talaga nung third and fourth set, pa-

rang ang medyo matamlay,” she said. For her consistent outings that kept the 10-time PVL champions unscathed, Pons was unanimously voted as the PVL Press Corps Player of the Week presented by Pilipinas Live for the period of January 28 to February 1.

The Reinforced Conference MVP had a solid week as she tallied 13 points and 12 digs despite playing in just two sets in their 25-12, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Nxled last Tuesday.

She bested teammate Kyle Negrito, PLDT’s Savi Davison, ZUS’ Jov Gonzaga, Akari’s Ivy Lacsina, and even overshadowed the 33-point career-high of Trisha Tubu when Farm Fresh beat Galeries Tower.

The former Far Eastern University stalwart attributed her rise to Creamline’s stacked roster, which brings out the best in her every training.

“Actually, gusto ko lang din talagang maging consistent, ‘yung goal ko lang talaga everyday sa training pa lang, [mag-improve] na kahit one percent lang every day,” Pons said.

MVP Akowe stars as Bullpups stretch UAAP win streak to 5

NATIONAL University Nazareth School extended its unbeaten streak to five games after demolishing the struggling University of the Philippines Integrated School, 90-34, in the UAAP Season 87 High School Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Sunday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Reigning MVP Collins Akowe led the Bullpups’ charge with his fifth double-double in as many games, recording 21 points, 16 rebounds, and three assists. Mac Alfanta provided solid support, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting while adding two rebounds, two steals, and one assist in the dominant 56-point victory. The Akowe-Alfanta duo has been instrumental in NUNS’ unbeaten run, steering the Bullpups to a flawless 6-0 record. They now brace for two crucial matchups against fellow contender University of the East and defending champion Adamson University to close their first-round campaign.

“Sabi ko sa kanila, we don’t have to be complacent. Ayaw namin mag-relax kahit hindi pa tapos ‘yung

first round. We have to make a statement kasi ang next game namin is UE, one of the contenders, then last game is ‘yung defending champions. Gusto lang namin magkaroon ng magandang springboard,” said NUNS head coach Kevin de Castro.

The Bullpups asserted their dominance early with a 20-7 firstquarter surge, burying UPIS in a 32-point hole, 4614, by halftime.

That early lead proved to be all NUNS needed as they continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Maroons 44-20, including a 25-8 fourth-quarter blitz to seal their fifth consecutive win.

Six-foot-six center Migs Palanca contributed 13 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block, while Kurl Figueroa chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Meanwhile, Tom Pillado made his Season 87 debut after serving a four-game suspension, finishing with four assists and three rebounds.

Japan comes from behind to stun Britain in Davis Cup

PARIS—Japan came from behind to beat Britain 3-2 in Davis Cup qualifying on Saturday, while Serbia face a relegation play-off after squandering a 2-0 lead in their loss to Denmark.

After Friday’s singles in Miki, Japan, were split, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury won the doubles to put Britain 2-1 ahead, but Yoshihito Nishioka beat Jacob Fearnley 6-3, 7-6 (7/0) to level the tie.

Kei Nishikori, the former world number four, swept Billy Harris aside 6-2, 6-3 in the deciding rubber to send Japan into September’s second qualifying round. Britain must come through a relegation play-off to stay in the top world group next season.

“Losing is difficult but I can’t fault the efforts of the players here. They gave everything. You win some, you lose some,” said British captain Leon Smith. Germany head to Japan in the next round after easing to a 3-1 win over Israel in Vilnius, with last year’s ATP Finals doubles champions Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz clinching the tie.

“It’s going to be a tough draw,” said Krawietz. “Of course we want to go to the last eight. That’s the next step for us.” Serbia, playing without the injured Novak Djokovic, began Saturday needing just one point to wrap up victory over Denmark in Copenhagen, but the hosts stormed back to complete a 3-2 win.

Holger Rune helped Denmark stay alive by teaming up with Johannes Ingildsen to claim the doubles and then atoned for Friday’s singles defeat by downing Miomir Kecmanovic 6-2, 6-4.

Elmer Moeller recovered from a set down to beat Hamad Medjedovic in the deciding singles to spark wild celebrations.

“I’m elated. It’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s the first time in Danish Davis Cup history that we managed to come back from 0-2 down and I’m beyond delighted,” said Denmark captain Frederick Nielsen, who played 47 ties for his country.AFP

Austria’s Straka, who stumbled out of the lead with three bogeys to start the back nine, closed his late run with a four-foot birdie putt at the par5 18th to regain the top spot.

“It was a bit of a roller coaster out there,” Straka said. “Things got pretty tough. Wind. Rain. I didn’t handle them too well. Struggled all day with speed on the greens because of the wind. Didn’t adjust really well until the last few holes.”

Straka, who won his third PGA Tour title just two weeks ago at the American Express event, opened with back-to-back birdies. But his second shot at the 10th faded right over a cliff and onto the beach to start a three-bogey run.

He answered with birdie putts at 14 and 15, sank a 29-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th, then blasted out of a bunker to four feet at 18 and sank the putt.

“Really proud of the way I stuck it out and came back to get some birdies coming in. Hit some really big putts.”

Four-time major winner McIlroy birdied three of the last four holes and 2019 British Open champion Lowry

chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

This isn’t a rebuilding project; it’s a calculated gamble to maximize their championship window with a proven defensive stalwart like Davis.

The trade, which also sends guard Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick to Dallas, while the Lakers receive Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, and the Utah Jazz acquire Lakers guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, represents a significant departure from the

Mavericks’ previous strategy.

While Doncic’s talent is undeniable, the Mavericks clearly prioritized bolstering their defense and interior presence.

They’re betting that Davis’s defensive impact, coupled with the offensive firepower of Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, will be the catalyst for a deep playoff run.

T his move underscores the Mavericks’ belief that a championship-caliber team needs a dominant defensive anchor, a nd they’re willing to part with a generational talent like Doncic to acquire one.

The Lakers, on the other hand, are looking towards the future.

Doncic, a 25-year-old five-time All-

Star, provides them with a potential heir to the aging LeBron James.

While the Lakers locker room was reportedly “completely shocked” by the trade, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, the long-term benefits of pairing Doncic with James are undeniable.

Even LeBron himself, while acknowledging the importance of Davis’s defense, as he stated after the Lakers’ win over the Knicks,

“Without AD it’s got to be a collective group, not one of us can do it by ourselves. We damn sure can’t take up all what AD does -- he covers for all of us,” must surely recognize the potential of a Doncic-led Lakers team in the years to come. AFP

Finnegan shares NCAA vault crown with 3 others

FIL-AMERICAN Olympian bet Aleah Finnegan took home one of three titles that the no. 3-ranked Louisiana State University women’s gymnastics team won on Friday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Finnegan shared the individual vault crown with teammates Chase Brock and freshman Kaliya Lincoln and University of Missouri’s Hannah Horton during the ongoing Southeastern Eastern Conference of the US NCAA Division 1 gymnastics’ competitions.

With their effort, the LSU Tigers went on to bring down No. 9 Missouri, 198.000-197.175 in front of a crowd of 13,082 fans, according to the official university website.

The Tigers, who upped their winloss record to 6-3, also netted the bars’ title, with their players Kailin

Chio and Alexis Jeffrey sharing the win with Mara Titarsolej from Missouri.

Halleigh Bryant then claimed the floor exercise title with her 9.95 score.

Finnegan earned her 11th title in the season and 34th in her career.

So far, LSU emerged as the only second team in the 2025 season to register a 198-and-above score.

The score was registered off new season-highs on vault (49.550) and beam (49.550) and after the Tigers tied the team’s season-high mark on bars (49.425).

“The things they were saying in the meeting, and the intentionality and the energy that they brought to practice really shifted this week; and they really understood the reasons for what had happened the previous week, and it showed out there tonight,” said LSU coach Jay Clark.

Fil-Am Bossong shatters PH 800-m record for 4th straight time

PHILIPPINE team aspirant and Filipino-American trackster Victoria Bossong finished fourth overall after running 2:00.79 to eclipse a Philippine record in the women’s 800-m run on Friday at the 2025 John Thomas Terrier Classic. Bossong, a senior medical student-athlete at Harvard University, surpassed the national indoor mark currently held by Jessica Barnard, who ran in 2:13.44 at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington back in 2014. Minutes later, Bossong, along with seniors Chloe Fair, Izzy Goudros, and sophomore Sophia Gorriaran, set a new school record in the women’s 4x400m relay, as the quartet submitted a

time of 3:31.57. Their clocking saw Harvard moving higher to no. 4 on the national performance list this season.

The 21-year-old Bossong, who is currently ranked at a careerhigh no. 139 in the world, has breached Barnard’s mark four times in a row. Since 2022, Bossong has improved the record by almost 11 seconds, and four seconds since last year.

Bossong registered a time of 2:11.43 at Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite in 2022 and brought it down to a 2:08.81 at the Clemson meet a year later. In the same year, she crossed the finish line in ninth place in the 800m at the John Thomas

Terrier Classic with a time of 2:04.72.

Previously, Bossong clocked 2:00.92 in the outdoor finals of the Pepsi Florida Relays last year.

Barnard also holds the Philippine national outdoor mark at 2:06.75, which she did at the Portland Track Festival back in June 2016.

Bossong, who competed for the first time in the Philippines last year, is expected to return to the country this year to join the Philippine Open Athletics Championships.

Bossong is knocking at the door of the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association for her to be able to join the national team. Peter Atencio

PH automotive sector sees 2025 sales growth of 8% to 512,000

THE Philippine automotive industry is optimistic about surpassing the half-million mark in sales in 2025 to 512,000 units, an 8-percent growth over the record-breaking 474,000 units in 2024.

Industry reports earlier announced that 2024 car sales generated up to P70 billion in taxes and supported the employment of over 138,000 Filipinos in direct and indirect automotiverelated jobs.

Toyota’s Philippine operations created employment for over 69,000 Filipinos and contributed P35 billion in government revenues.

livelihood.

Ty noted that as the automotive market continues to expand, local production is poised to grow alongside it, presenting new opportunities for the country to strengthen its manufacturing sector.

“This new record represents a nation on the move, with increased car sales symbolizing greater mobility for Filipinos and a vibrant economy,” said Toyota Motor Philippines chairman Alfred Ty over the weekend.

For the 23rd consecutive year, Toyota has maintained its Triple Crown status, with the Philippines continuing to rank among the top 10 largest markets for Toyota globally.

By maintaining its market leadership, Toyota played a key role in the growth of the local automotive sector, achieving a record 218,019 units sold across its Toyota and Lexus brands.

While car parts exports were down by 3 percent from $1.26 billion in 2023, the car manufacturer expects a rebound in 2025.

The anticipated return of the iconic Tamaraw is expected to revolutionize the local automotive scene, as it offers not only mobility but also a tool for

“As the Philippine automotive market continues to grow, I am encouraged by the opportunities that this expansion brings. The rapid and substantial influx of automakers and brands is a positive sign for me. I am a strong advocate of ‘Gawa ng Filipino para sa Filipino’, so this development is a promising prospect for nationbuilding,” he said.

Marcos lauds public-private partnership in job generation

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos

Jr. underscored the vital role of collaboration between the government and the private sector in generating employment as he commended the SM Group for its contributions to job creation and workforce development.

Speaking at the two-day Jobstreet Career Con 2025 at the SMX Convention Center, the president attributed the decline in the country’s unemployment rate to governmentled initiatives to upskill workers.

“Cooperation between the government and the private sector is very important. Ma’am Tessie Coson, who has been with us from the start, opened the doors of SM malls for job fairs like this, which have been very successful,” he said.

Teresita Sy-Coson is the vicechairman of SM Investments. She is also a member of the Private Sector Advisory Council’s (PSAC) Education and Jobs Group, established by the President in 2022.

The president expressed optimism that many of the 18,000 registered job seekers at the fair would secure employment.

“When we did these job fairs and upskilling programs with SM before, they were very successful. So we said, let’s try to do this more often,” he said.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported a decline in unemployment from 3.9 percent in October 2024 to 3.2 percent in November 2024, within the country’s 51.2 million labor force.

Marcos emphasized that the partnership between the government and the private sector has led to various sectors and agencies working together to bridge employers and prospective employees, while also upgrading workforce skills.

Malacañang highlighted that upskilling programs are part of government initiatives aimed at improving employment and livelihood.

IN BAKING, all you knead is love and a little butter.

Doubtless, Ana Lorenzana de Ocampo knows about this cute quote.

She comes from a family who made its fame and fortune out of making fish sauce or ‘patis” which we put into practically every food except, sweet stuffs like ice cream and leche flan.

Ana traces her roots to the makers of the famous Lorins Patis brand, but she blossomed into a creator of fine dining concepts now being offered by Wildflour restaurants.

She earned a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, then pursued her studies in pastry and culinary arts at the Le Cordon Bleu in London.

In collaboration with her sister, Margarita Lorenzana-Manzke who is also in the pastry business, Ana set off her owned entrepreneurial journey with the launch of the first Wildflour at Bonifacio Global City in 2012.

Margarita herself is quite a story.

She is a multi-awarded pastry chef and entrepreneur. She studied at the Culinary Institute of America in New York where she graduated in 1998. She moved to Los Angeles, California and worked in the city’s prominent restaurants, including Spago and

Ana Lorenzana de Ocampo of Wildflour bakes love at first bite

Patina, where she met her future husband and business partner, Walter.

Margarita was named by LA Weekly as “Best Pastry Chef” in 2014 for her work at her own restaurant République, and was a finalist in the James Beard Awards, referred to as the “Oscars of the food industry” for four consecutive years from 20172020 in the Outstanding Pastry Chef category.

Margarita’s one-of-a-kind recipes are further immortalized in her very own cookbook, Baking at Republique launched in 2020.

With Ana as chief executive, the Wildflour evolved into a conglomerate of multiple hospitality shops including Wildflour Italian, George and Onnie’s, Pink’s, Pizza Sisters, Hotel Bar, Village Bar, Farmacy Ice Cream, and Wildflour To-Go and Osteria which deliver fine foods to the doorsteps of customers. Wildflour Café + Bakery though has remained the flagship brand ever since.

Ana relishes the sight of satisfied customers. “The idea of seeing people enjoy your food should not be your primary motivation; that is simply the cherry on top. When work becomes personal to you, that daily smell of bread baked properly or the trials of testing a new pastry still elicit a thrill. Then it won’t simply be a job you have, but a lifelong, fruitful journey.”

She looks back to 2024 as another banner year for Wildflour, having broadened its market to cover more areas outside Metro Manila.

This year, Ana already has a blueprint for more branches across major cities in Luzon. And by 2026, she looks forward to doing business overseas. Before going into the hospitality sector, Ana was purchasing director of Office Warehouse, another familyowned chain of retail outlets.

Her business acumen has been making waves in the corporate world. As Wildflour’s reaped commendations one after another, Ana herself mustered citations as an intrepid and pioneering executive, among them the Go Negosyo Inspiring Filipina Entrepreneur Award in 2018, Tatler’s Restaurateur of the Year 2021, an ASEAN Women Entrepreneur Awardee for 2022, and a finalist for Ernst & Young/SGV’s Entrepreneur of the Year Philippines 2022. There’s no secret to Ana’s success; steadfast and hands-on leadership, acute business intuition, uncompromising vision and drive for excellence.

PH stocks seen trading at 5,600 to 6,000 amid bargain-hunting

BARGAIN-HUNTING is expected to persist this week after the market entered the bear market territory last week.

“With four straight weeks of decline, we expect bargain hunting to ensue. However, we may not see a complete turnaround yet as sentiment could remain bearish,” Philstocks Financial Inc. research head Japhet Tantiangco said.

He said investors could still be concerned with how the Philippine economy would fare this 2025 following its below target performance last year, and how the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas could help given that the US Federal Reserve is slowing down with its policy easing.

He said investors are expected to watch out for upcoming economic data for clues.

These include the S&P Global Philippines Manufacturing PMI, January 2025 inflation rate and December 2024 labor market data.

The PSEi dropped 6.89 percent last week to close at 5,862.59, while the broader all-shares index declined 4.37 percent to 3,520.32.

Average daily value traded improved to P9.411 billion from previous week’s average of P4.23 billion. Foreign investors were net buyers, with net inflows reaching P72.8 million from previous week’s net outflows of P2.5 billion.

From its immediate peak of 7,604.61 which was posted last Oct. 7, 2024, the market has declined by 22.9 percent.

Given the market’s recent decline the index is seen trading at 5,700 to 6,000. Jenniffer B. Austria

SEC files complaint vs. Seataoo Group for offering securities

THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said it filed a criminal complaint against New Seataoo Corp. and Seataoo Information Technology OPC including their officers for offering investments to the public without the required license.

The SEC said it filed a case filed before the Department of Justice on Jan. 16, 2025, after receiving complaints from several investors that claimed they invested amounts ranging from P20,000 to P2.3 million due to an expectation of returns from the group.

Upon investigation, the Seataoo Group was found to be offering securities in the form of investment contracts through its “dropshipping e-commerce platform” scheme.

Under the scheme, the Seataoo Group entices potential investors to become an online seller on its platform with the requirement that they deposit money in order to process orders.

The investors are promised with a profit ranging from 7 percent to 12 percent of the amount they invested. It also offers an affiliate program where existing investors or online sellers get a 3 percent referral commission.

“This scheme affirms that the deposited funds are in reality, investments, since they are not limited to transactional payments directly tied to specific purchases. In fact, complainants demand for the return of their investments plus profits,” the complaint read.

“This mandatory funding of individual accounts required of Seataoo’s members/online sellers is a device used by Seataoo to mask its offer/sale of unregistered securities, and obtain investments from the public without having to secure the requisite license from the Commission,” it said.

The SEC charged New Seataoo, Seataoo OPC and its officers and agents with violation of Section 8.1 of Republic Act (RA) No. 8799, or the Securities Regulation Code (SRC), in relation to Rules 3.1.17 of its 2015 implementing rules and regulations, Sections 26.3 and 28 of the SRC, in relation to Section 6 of RA No. 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, Section 11 in relation to Section 3(f) of the Republic Act No. 11765, or the Financial Products and Services Consumer Protection Act (FCPA). Toyota chair seeks increased local content in car production

TOYOTA Motor Philippines (TMP)

chairman Alfred Ty addressed the growing challenges in local automotive manufacturing, stressing the importance of increasing local production to create Filipino-made vehicles for the local market.

Ty, speaking at a recent media event, acknowledged the demand for concessions, pointing out that while volume growth is evident, local content and production continue to lag.

“I’m not surprised that they’re [automotive parts makers] are asking for concessions. The volume is growing, but local production and content remain challenged. It’s still largely Toyota and Mitsubishi handling manufacturing here. I hope we can attract more manufacturers to set up plants in the Philippines and produce locally. Filipino products for Filipinos—that should be our mantra for the entire industry,” he said.

Ty emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to overcome these challenges.

He said one of the primary hurdles is the competition posed by alternative sources, such as Thailand and Indonesia, where production costs are often lower.

“It’s easy to give a number, but the real question is: what parts can we locally produce? What is feasible to manufacture here, considering the alternatives from neighboring countries?” Ty said.

Toyota president Masando Hashimoto, in response to inquiries about the highest local content in Toyota’s models, said Vios holds the highest at about 52 percent local content, which he believes is the highest in the industry.

Auto parts manufacturers urge DTI to adopt stricter safeguards

THE Philippine Parts Makers Association (PPMA) said over the weekend the automotive parts manufacturing sector, which sustains 220,000 Filipino jobs and generates P150 billion annually for the economy, remains under siege.

PPMA said, despite the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) bold but unsuccessful 2021 safeguard measures, imports now command 65 percent of the domestic market, pushing 15 percent of local suppliers to-

ward collapse.

“The 2021 safeguards were a wakeup call. In 2025, we must learn from their shortcomings and finally secure our industry’s future,” said PPMA president Ferdi Raquelsantos.

The DTI’s 2021 provisional duties targeted a 35-percent year-on-year import surge, including P72 billion in automotive parts that crippled local producers.

Though rejected by the Tariff Commission due to “insufficient injury

evidence,” the effort highlighted systemic vulnerabilities.

“The intent was right, but the execution lacked teeth,” Raquelsantos said.

“Today, imports have swelled to P98 billion, and local production of engines and transmissions has dropped by 15 percent. We cannot repeat half-hearted measures,” he said.

The group said that since 2021, 12,000 jobs have vanished, and 20 percent of Filipino-owned suppliers

risk shuttering by 2026. Meanwhile, Thailand and Vietnam invest P300 billion to P500 billion annually in automotive policies, dominating ASEAN’s P1.2-trillion aftermarket.

“Our competitors aren’t waiting. Steel part imports jumped 40 percent in 2023, while electronics shipments—often priced below cost— rose 25 percent. Without robust safeguards, we surrender our future,” Raquelsantos said.

Vivant named ‘great place to work’ in 2024

CEBU-BASED energy and water conglomerate Vivant Corp. said it was certified by Great Place To Work (GPTW) for the second year.

The coveted certification is based on the overall experience of Vivant employees where 88 percent said it’s a great place to work—a remarkable testament to the exceptional workplace culture Vivant continues to foster. Vivant also received the GPTW certification in January 2022 to January 2023. GPTW is the global authority on workplace culture, employee experience, and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver market-leading revenue, employee retention and increased innovation.

“Great Place To Work certification is a highly coveted achievement that

requires consistent and intentional dedication to the overall employee experience,” said Sarah Lewis-Kulin, vice president of global recognition at Great Place To Work.

Kulin said the certification is the sole official recognition earned by the real-time feedback of employees regarding their company culture.

“By successfully earning this recognition, it is evident that Vivant Corporation stands out as one of the top companies to work for, providing a great workplace environment for its employees,” she said.

Arlo Sarmiento, Vivant chief executive, said the recertification as a Great Place To Work is a testament to the company’s commitment to building an exceptional workplace culture.

DLSU’s EMBA: A case for responsible executive education

RECENTLY released university rankings have affirmed De La Salle University’s standing as one of the premier universities in the Philippines. In the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings, DLSU emerged as the country’s top-ranked university in the fields of Arts and Humanities (601+), Business and Economics (801+), Education Studies (401-500), Psychology (401-500), and Social Sciences (801-1000). In the overall rankings, DLSU ranked third, behind Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and the University of the Philippines (UP).

In the area of Business and Management, DLSU is among the leading business schools in the country. According to EduRank, DLSU ranked highest in terms of its research performance in business (#527 in Asia), followed by UP (#627 in Asia), UP Los Banos (#801 in Asia), University of Santo Tomas (#894 in Asia), and the Asian Institute of Management (#943 in Asia).

University rankings, however, while indicative of the quality of education of higher education institutions (HEIs), must not distract universities from pursuing their avowed educational missions. In the case of the DLSU Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business, we take seriously our mission as a business school: “Guided by the Lasallian values of faith, service, and communion in mission, we nurture business leaders who influence policymaking, improve business and management practices, and empower communities.”

We are especially proud of our regular MBA Program, which has produced tens and thousands of graduates that now hold important leadership / managerial positions not only in business and industry but also in government, academia, and civil society. Our graduates have benefitted from developing their leadership qualities, decision-making, and strategic thinking skills. They have acquired the tools and competencies needed to manage teams, navigate complex business challenges, and drive organizational growth. Many of our graduates, because of their robust understanding of business functions such as finance, human resource management, marketing, and operations have also been trusted with higher-level positions, which bring with them competitive compensation and benefits.

We are confident that, given our faculty members’ cutting-edge knowledge derived from both their research and industry experience, we will be able to expose our students to the latest trends, strategies, and innovations in the business world.

This year, we have decided to expand our reach by offering the Executive MBA Program (EMBA) at our DLSU Laguna Campus. Just like our regular MBA Program, the EMBA seeks to develop capable and socially responsible managers for modern Philippine enterprises. What makes the EMBA distinct is that it is open only to those who are already in middle management or senior management positions in their respective organizations. We envision the EMBA to include a cohort of about 15 students per batch, particularly those coming from select companies located in the Laguna Technopark or in the nearby commercial districts.

Moreover, EMBA students will be able to earn their degree in a much shorter period. Students will undergo an intensive hybrid program, which includes face-to-face sessions held on Saturdays combined with asynchronous online sessions on weekdays over a period of 5 trimesters (as opposed to 8 to 9 trimesters for students enrolled in the regular MBA program). EMBA classes will be held in the new Enrique K. Razon Hall, which features state-ofthe-art spaces, a learning commons, a collaborative lecture hall, student services, modern classrooms, and a function hall – all of which were designed to inspire collaborative activity and innovation. Among the unique features of our EMBA Program are the importance it gives to business ethics, its service-learning component, and its action research capstone project.

Guided by the RVRCOB Code of Ethics, we call on our students to treat others with respect and dignity, to preserve the environment, to offer socially positive products and services, to avoid conflicts of interest, and to be transparent in reporting company performance.

We also encourage our students to set their sights beyond the companies that they work for through an innovative pedagogy called service learning. Through a service-learning project undertaken during their Lasallian Business Leadership course, our students render service hours with a partner organization focused on social concerns. Finally, through their action research capstone project, our students collaborate with their colleagues at work to confront real and important organizational problems. Guided by their advisers, they plan and carry out needed changes in their respective companies. After which, they evaluate the outcomes of their change efforts and reflect on how they have personally and professionally developed from having worked on the project.

We are confident that, given our faculty members’ cutting-edge knowledge derived from both their research and industry experience, we will be able to expose our students to the latest trends, strategies, and innovations in the business world. Moreover, our years of experience effectively using online learning platforms, coupled with tried-and-tested face-to-face learning methods, will enable our students to be equally adaptable in their own managerial practices in a world where flexible work arrangements are slowly becoming the norm.

PPA expects cruise tourism resurgence from int’l vessels

Ports Authority (PPA) is expecting a resurgence in cruise tourism this year, buoyed by recent port calls from international cruise ships.

The PPA said January saw two notable visits, signaling growing interest in Philippine destinations.

The Maltese-flagged cruise ship MS Europa 2 arrived in Bohol on Jan. 31, 2025, as part of its Asian itinerary.

The vessel, which sailed from Indonesia,

Republic of the Philippines Province of Misamis Oriental MUNICIPALITY OF OPOL

spans 225 meters in length and has a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 42,830. It carried 372 crew members and 453 passengers, mostly German and European nationals.

Guests aboard MS Europa 2 explored some of Bohol’s most famous attractions, including Baclayon Church, the Chocolate Hills and the Tarsier Sanctuary. The ship later set sail for Kalanggaman Island, Leyte.

Meanwhile, the international cruise ship MV Norwegian Sky returned to Manila South Harbor on Jan. 30, 2025, following its previous call on Jan. 17, 2025, for a turn-around operation.

To ensure a seamless experience for its guests, 10 buses were provided for guided tours around Manila. The ship remained at Manila South Harbor until sunset, before departing for its next destination, Boracay Island.

Since the beginning of the year, a total of seven cruise vessels have made port calls at various destinations across the country, further signaling the Philippines’ growing appeal in the global cruise industry.

The PPA recorded a 61.9-percent increase in cruise passenger arrivals in 2024, reaching 142,574 passengers—a significant rise from 88,080 in 2023.

This marks the highest post-pandemic figure for the country, and the agency projects continued growth in 2025, expecting 185,000 cruise passengers, a 29.8 percent increase from the previous year.

BSP: Hot money rebounded to $2.1-b net inflows in 2024

FOREIGN portfolio investments, or hot money, yielded net inflows of $2.1 billion in 2024, a reversal from the $248.84-million net outflows seen in 2023.

Gross outflows amounted to $15.82 billion in 2024, up by 20.5 percent from the previous year’s $13.13 billion.

from $1.54 billion gross outflows and gross inflows of $1.05 billion.

IN BRIEF

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said gross foreign investments registered through authorized agent banks (AABs) grew 39.2 percent to $17.9 billion in 2024 from $12.8 billion level in 2023. The BSP said these investments were predominantly investments in peso government securities (54.2 percent), while the balance was invested in Philippine Stock Exchange-listed securities (45.8 percent) and other investments (less than 1.0 percent).

Cybercrime victims lost P198b in over 10,000 cases in 2024

VICTIMS of cybercrime lost nearly P198 billion in 2024 as complaints handled by Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) reached 10,004 cases—a threefold increase from the 3,317 complaints in 2023.

CICC executive director Alexander Ramos attributed the exponential increase in complaints to the growing cybercrime awareness of the public and their willingness to report.

“In previous years, people were not aware that they were being scammed and many were not also aware on where to file their complaints,” he said.

“We also owe this to our partners who have been encouraging the public to report to our hotline or through other channels and platforms,” Ramos said.

Based on the CICC complaints, consumer fraud accounted for 3,534 or 35 percent of the total complaints received. These included non-delivery of goods or services (86 percent) and fake advertisement (8 percent).

Complaints on online fraud accounted for 3,242 or 32 percent. These figures included financial fraud (957), impersonification (920), job scam (396), investment scam (396) and love scam (72).

Other types of complaints received included unsolicited communication, illegal access, identity theft, sexual cybercrime, phishing and cyber libel.

The CICC statistics show that GCash was the top wallet used by victims of consumer fraud, online fraud and phishing recording a loss of P76.49 million. Other financial platforms used by victims included BPI (P28.47 million), GoTyme (P15.38 million) and Maya (P13.99 million). Darwin G. Amojelar

The UK, Singapore, US, Luxembourg and Hong Kong were the top five investor countries during the year, with combined share to total at 86.3 percent.

On a per instrument level, transactions in PSE-listed shares resulted in net outflows of $897.53 million, smaller compared to the $1.02 billion net outflows last year, while those for Peso GS recorded net inflows of $3 billion, up by 284.2 percent compared to $781.08 million net inflows in 2023.

The BSP said that for the month of December 2024, transactions on foreign investments registered with the BSP, through AABs, recorded net outflows of $487.37 million, resulting

The recorded net outflows are a reversal from the $96.59 million net inflows posted in November 2024.

Investments in December mostly came from the United Kingdom (UK), United States (US), Singapore, Germany and Ireland with combined share to total at 76.3 percent.

The $1.5-billion gross outflows in December were lower by 12.6 percent compared to the gross outflows in November amounting to $1.7 billion.

The US remained the top destination of outflows, receiving $718.88 million (or 46.6 percent) of total outward remittances.

THE domestic claims of the other financial corporations rose 12 percent to P9.87 billion in the third quarter of 2024 from P8.81 billion in the same period in 2023, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

The BSP said, however, it went by 6.1 percent quarter-on-quarter.

The quarter-on-quarter rise in the other financial corporations’ domestic claims was attributable to the increase in its claims on the depository corporations, the other sectors and the cen-

tral government. It said the other financial corporations’ claims on the depository corporations grew as its holdings of bank-issued debt securities and equity shares increased. Likewise, the sector’s claims on the other sectors grew as its investments in equity shares issued by other nonfinancial corporations and loans extended to households expanded.

The growth in the OFCs’ domestic claims was further supported by the rise in the sector’s investments in

ERC to hold hearings on Meralco, GNPower’s 15-year deal

THE Energy Regulatory Commission set the hearings for the joint application of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) and GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co. (GNPD) for their proposed 15-year power supply agreement (PSA).

GNPD won the contract to supply Meralco with 400 megawatts of mid-merit capacity with its offer of P7.6816 per kilowatt-hour (total delivered levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), value added tax and line rental inclusive).

GNPD’s offer was lower than the P8.0585 per kWh reserve price for

LCOE set for the bidding held on Oct. 1, 2024.

Meralco conducted a competitive selection process after it foresaw a mid-merit capacity deficit in its portfolio of 400 MW beginning September 2025.

GNPD, led by Aboitiz Power Corp., owns and operates a 1,336-MW supercritical coal-fired power generation facility and private port facility at Sitio Dinginin, Barangay Alas-asin, Mariveles, Bataan. According to the joint application, GNPD’s delivered rate of P6.7628 per kWh (line rental inclusive and VAT exclusive), is lower by about P2.3202

per kWh than the total effective cost of P9.0830 per kWh if the equivalent capacity under the PSA is to be sourced from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

By sourcing the capacity through the Meralco-GNPD PSA, Meralco’s average blended generation rate will be reduced by about P0.1219 per kWh, resulting in savings to consumers of about P4.8 billion.

The commission set the determination of compliance with the jurisdictional requirements, expository presentation, pre-trial conference and presentation of evidence on March 14 and March 21, 2025.

government-issued debt securities.

The net foreign assets of the other financial corporations rose 1.7 percent quarter-on-quarter to P486.5 billion in the third quarter of 2024 from P478.2 billion in the second quarter of 2024 due primarily to the increase in its deposits with nonresident banks and investments in nonresident-issued equity shares.

Meanwhile, the sector’s other liabilities increased 5.9 percent quarteron-quarte to P10,359.0 billion in the third quarter of 2024. This was due

mainly to the expansion in its shares and other equity issuances.

The BSP said that on a year-onyear) basis, the other financial corporations’ domestic claims grew at a faster pace of 12 percent in the third quarter of 2024 from the 7.8 percent increase recorded in the second quarter of 2024.

The said increase is due mainly to the rise in the sector’s claims on the depository corporations, the other sectors and the central government.

PHILIPPINE exports of hard goods and garments to the US are expected to remain flat in 2025, with projections hovering above $900 million, according to the Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines (FOBAP). Industry leaders are cautiously optimistic, hoping for the reauthorization of the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and the start of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with the US to drive future growth.

“If the GSP is not reauthorized, we’ll likely see flat growth, with garment exports potentially declining further due to rising prices and difficulties in meeting buyer demand,” said FOBAP president Robert Young.

Preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that hard good and garments exports to the US amounted to $947.7 million in 2024. “We’re all in a waiting game, particularly with the uncertainty surrounding President Trump’s ‘America First’ policy,” Young said. The US GSP, which allowed duty-free access for over 3,000 Philippine products, expired in December 2020. Its renewal is under review in the US Congress. Young said they remained hopeful that a revival of the GSP could boost export revenues by 5 percent to 10 percent in 2025, especially for hard goods. The US remains the dominant market for Philippine exports, accounting for 90 percent of hard goods and garment sales, while ASEAN and the EU together make up just 10 percent.

Ayala Land sees higher lease rates amid mall renovations

PROPERTY

developer Ayala Land Inc. is seeing strong early returns in its mall renovation program, with higher lease rates and increasing sales.

The upgrades of TriNoma, Glorietta, Greenbelt and Ayala Center Cebu—now 40-percent to 60-percent complete—are showing signs of growth, boosting tenant confidence, according to Mariana Zobel de Ayala, senior vice president and head of leasing and hospitality at Ayala Land.

“The renovations are on track, and it’s creating a lot of excitement with tenants,” Zobel de Ayala said.

ALI announced last year plans to renovate and re-invent four flagship malls to increase their total gross leasable area by 400,000 square meters.

As new retail concepts are introduced, some mall areas have seen significant sales increases.

“With some of the [leasing area] that we’ve already replaced with new concepts, we’ve seen sales double for those, in some cases more,” Zobel de Ayala said.

The renewed interest from shoppers is reflected in the leasing market as well, with Ayala Land increasing rent by 15 percent to 20 percent.

Zobel also reported a 10-percent growth in foot traffic last year.

With these early gains in lease rates and sales, Ayala Land is confident in the success of its renovation program and the long-term potential of its retail portfolio.

Zobel de Ayala said that 30,000 square meters of mall space would be refreshed this year, focusing not only on physical upgrades but also on programming and experiences that attract consumers.

The renovations signal a broader commitment to expanding Ayala Land’s retail presence, with 78,000 square meters of new retail space set to open in 2025.

These include phase 1 of Vermosa in Cavite, Park Triangle in Bonifacio Global City and first phases of Solenad 4 in Sta. Rosa and Arca South.

Zobel de Ayal said the group’s newly-opened malls like One Ayala and Manila Bay have also been doing well.

She said ALI has about 700,000 sq. m. of mall space under planning or construction.

“We have a lot of conviction in the market. We have a lot of conviction in the Filipino consumer,” she said.

THE Residences at The Westin Manila, a high-end condominium project of Robinsons Land Corp. has fully transitioned to 100 percent renewable energy

Completed on December 26, 2024, this milestone makes it the first RLC Residences property to integrate renewable energy under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP).

“The Residences at The Westin Manila is the first of many - which is part of our commitment to deliver 1 million sqm. of net zero condominiums to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) by 2031. Currently, seven more developments are transitioning to renewable energy, with completion expected in the first half of the year. Twenty more to be initiated to switch within the next two years,” said Sotelo.

“We at RLC Residences are truly grateful to reach this milestone. Switching to renewable energy benefits both the environment and our homeowners, translating to energy cost savings of about 8-10% for residents. It’s a winwin for us, our clients, and the planet,” said Chad Sotelo, RLC Residences’ Senior Vice PresidentBusiness Unit General Manager and Robinsons Land’s Chief Marketing Officer.

For this project, RLC Residences has partnered with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES). This marks RLC Residences’ pilot project under GEOP - a voluntary program under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008. This initiative allows qualified end-users to choose renewable energy as their power source, reducing reliance on depleting natural resources like coal and petroleum, lessening carbon emissions, and potentially lowering utility costs.

ACEN RES estimates that once 28 RLC Residences projects complete their transition, 344,281 kilograms of CO2 emissions will be reduced annually. In 2024, RLC Residences partnered with IFC to commit one million square meters (GFA) of net zero carbon and resilient condominiums by 2031. The collaboration focuses on identifying, evaluating, and implementing green building measures using Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification and verifying resilience ratings through IFC’s Building Resilience Index (BRI) tool. Comparative pain analyses

SHOWBIZ

THE word “travel” comes from the French word “travail,” which means “suffering” or “effort” mired in discomfort, or put simply, “pain.” In the movie A Real Pain ( Jesse Eisenberg , 2024), this pain stems from a rooted sense of identity and the dangers of being cast adrift.

The film is about two cousins portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg (nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for this) and Kieran Culkin (who earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role) traveling to Poland for a Holocaust memorial tour to honor their late grandmother, who survived the camps. Ultimately, the real pain must be cast aside, forgotten, or ignored. The two cousins, close as brothers, eventually drift apart with stark consequences for both.

Initially, the movie veers dangerously close to the usual trope of an odd couple on a road trip. Eisenberg, the anal, anxious, and apologetic one, must deal with Culkin’s equally nervous energy, which has no trigger warnings and comes off as unhinged.

We have seen these two actors play such roles before. Eisenberg has often portrayed awkward, bumbling characters (e.g., The Social Network , Zombieland ), while Culkin has made a name for himself portraying brats ( Igby Goes Down , Scott Pilgrim , Succession ) who are infuriating and irascible. Yet, the movie follows this path of expectations until the third act, which destabilizes these tropes.

Eisenberg’s anal personality and Culkin’s skittishness mask the pain they both carry. We do not immediately know what this pain is, but there are breadcrumbs along the way. The revelation scene is one of the most poignant moments of the film. It is expertly shot by Eisenberg, focusing on a dinner table and a lonely piano in the corner.

The thing with road trip movies is that (1) there is a revelation eventually, and (2) the landscape plays a crucial role. These two wired-up anxious Americans are nervous energies amidst the beautiful and bucolic Polish urban and rural landscapes.

The landscape is crucial because, despite the immense beauty of the place, it hides the untold horrors of eradication. That is the core of this movie: rememberance and monumentality.

In the Jewish tradition, those living leave stones atop graves to signify that the dearly departed will not be forgotten. Stones and iterations of concrete material abound in this movie. Eisenberg is an adept director who shoots monuments with loving and somber detail, mixed with bouts of irreverence.

One scene foregrounds the stark difference between the two cousins. Culkin’s character wants to pose wackily at a memorial for Polish soldiers, while Eisenberg’s character prefers to be more reverential but ends up as a not-so-willing accomplice to such a moment of hilarity. This scene might resemble a tourism reel for Poland, but Eisenberg folds in the narratives of the Holocaust and the memories that linger. It is one of the most beautifully shot locations of utmost horror. The blue tint of the Zyklon B gas on the walls looks like menacing witnesses, marked on the walls.

What is tragic while watching this film is realizing how Manila (the second most devastated city in World War II after Poland’s Warsaw) has no formidable monuments for our horrors. Memory is perfectly embedded in the Polish capital and the Polish countryside. Monuments are about bigger commemorations of a sanctioned memory, whereas the rocks on the grave are a slight, personal touch of remembrance. Both are materials declaring that we must not forget. After all, the real ignominy is having no sense of history and a short memory.

Former Miss Teen USA contestant vies for Miss World Quezon City crown

Rose Simpson , a former Miss Teen USA contestant, is competing in the first edition of Miss World Quezon City, aiming for a spot in the national competition.

Simpson, 17, was among 10 candidates introduced at a press presentation on Friday at the Manila Yacht Club. Representing Barangay Socorro, she hopes to advance to Miss World Philippines and potentially follow in the footsteps of Krishnah Gravidez, the country’s current Miss World representative.

The Christian missionary previously competed in Miss Teen USA 2023 as New Mexico’s delegate, where she was voted Miss Congeniality. She said her missionary work began in Roxas City, Capiz, where she grew up.

Simpson said. “Beauty queens are influencers on a public stage. You can use your talents, gifts, and abilities to make a difference.”

Among the other contestants is Anabela Solasco, representing Barangay Payatas, Lupang Pangako. A Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) councilor, she said she hopes to encourage others to join pageants despite not having what she described as the “perfect” pageant body.

“For me, it’s better to experience it so they’ll know what to do if they decide to join again,” Solasco said. “As an SK Kagawad, I serve as their guide because I used to join pageants myself. I want them to feel the joy of representing their barangay and themselves.” Other contestants introduced during the press presentation were Jalila Maranan, Angelika, Triumfante, Shane Denise Ganate, Ashley Nicole Fernandez, Ericka Salvidar, Jasmine Lee, Cherline Dalangin, and Primrose Ivy Suarez

Miss World Quezon City director Jen Jarina said the organization is looking for a candidate with good moral character, beauty, intelligence, and a strong physique.

The pageant will crown its winner in April, with Miss World Philippines 2025 set for October.

During the event, the lady entrepreneur launched Audrey, a luxury brand that offers premium leather bags made from cowhide and lambskin.

“This new endeavor aims to promote local craftsmanship while showcasing what a Philippine brand has to offer the world,” Tan said.

IT’S A baffling irony that the culture-shifting Beyonce has won more Grammys than anyone, ever, but has yet to attain the holy grail that is winning for Album of the Year.

At Sunday’s 67th edition of music’s top awards ceremony, the megastar has yet another chance to take home the prize—but in a packed field of no-skips albums, who will ultimately win the night’s top trophies is anyone’s guess.

Here’s a guide to Sunday’s (Monday in Manila)gala in Los Angeles:

Is it finally Beyonce’s year?

In recent years, the Recording Academy, which organizes the show, has made efforts to improve on that shortcoming, including by diversifying its voting membership.

Those efforts seem to have yielded some progress: the past few galas have proven historic for women in the major, allgenre categories as well as in fields where they were routinely sidelined, like rock.

But a stark truth remains: a Black woman has not won Album of the Year in this century.

The last to do so was Lauryn Hill, in 1999. Before her, Whitney Houston won in 1994, and Natalie Cole in 1992.

With her sprawling, ambitious Cowboy Carter that underscored the rich history of Black artists in country music, Beyonce is all but daring Grammy voters to snub her once again.

One thing is for sure: Win or lose, Beyonce will dominate the headlines.

Wildfire relief for LA

This year’s Grammys ceremony takes place just weeks after deadly wildfires engulfed entire neighborhoods in Los Angeles, shattering the lives of thousands of residents, including many in the music industry.

But the Recording Academy decided the show must go on, although it will likely be a more muted affair than usual, with an extra emphasis on raising money for fire relief efforts.

The fires have lent prominence to the Academy’s philanthropic arm, MusiCares, which says it has already distributed several million dollars in emergency aid and will hold its annual fundraising pre-Grammy gala on Friday—sans red carpet.

Pop’s breakouts and heavyweights

It’s a pop star’s world, and we’re just living in it: Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX have all enjoyed massive years that place them among Sunday’s top contenders. Roan and Carpenter in particular are among the favorites to take the prizes for best record and best song, which celebrates songwriting, as well as the coveted prize for best new artist. And perennial winner Billie Eilish is also a major name to beat in the top categories—the Grammys darling is just 23 but could win a record third Song of the Year trophy.

Despite all of her accolades, Swift—who could win a fifth Album of the Year prize, which would break her own record— has somehow never won Song of the Year, despite receiving persistent praise for her songwriting skills.

She’s lost seven times and has the chance to finally end that streak.

A Beatles win?

The Grammys never disappoint with the head-scratchers: this year, the most puzzling nomination went to The Beatles—yes, those Beatles, the group that broke up more than 50 years ago. The Record of the Year nomination for “Now and Then” spotlighted the Recording Academy’s ongoing debate on how to handle artificial intelligence.

An AI tool allowed for isolating John Lennon’s vocals from a poor quality demo tape, which were then added to contributions from living Beatles Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, along with 1995 guitar recordings from the late George Harrison

The track is eligible for a Grammy because the AI was not generative, and the nomination could be a nod from the Academy to the future of production and recording.

If The Beatles win – Grammy voters do love a legacy act – it would be their first time ever scoring that prize after four failed attempts in their heyday.

Quincy Jones tribute Sunday’s concert gala will include a salute to the singular Quincy Jones, who, after Beyonce (32) and the conductor Georg Solti (31) is among the most awarded artists, with 28 career Grammys.

The 91-year-old died in November after ruling the American music industry with a magic touch for well over half-a-century, working with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson

Jerrold Tarog, the director and co-writer of Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, is returning to helm Quezon

A jazz musician, composer, and tastemaker, Jones’s studio chops and arranging prowess made him a star in his own right, and the Recording Academy is set to honor him as such.
