WASHINGTON — US
President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday (Manila time) condemned China for “provocative activities” in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250208170130-cd0997498bfd2e9c03b1d985f2bc056e/v1/046a48bdb4c82ab6b17b97b98e0f8cc5.jpeg)
“The two leaders reaffirmed their strong opposition to the PRC’s unlawful maritime claims, militarization of reclaimed features, and threatening and provocative activities in the South China Sea,” a joint statement said after Trump and Ishiba met in Washington, referring to China by the abbreviation of its official name.
The two leaders reaffirmed their position during a bilateral summit in Washington D.C.
“The two leaders shared views on the severe and complex security environment and expressed their determination to continuously cooperate to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the White House said in a statement.
The Philippines has condemned China’s increased presence in the West Philippine Sea, the area covering the country’s maritime zones in the South China Sea, and its recent deployment of coast guard vessels some 100 nautical miles off the Zambales province coastline.
Trump and Ishiba reaffirmed their willingness to advance their “multilayered and aligned cooperation” among like-minded countries, including through their trilateral setup with the Philippines/ They also called for a denuclearized North Korea, although Trump—who met its leader Kim Jong-un during his first term—said he wanted to have “relations” with Pyongyang.
Behind Trump’s expressions of support were Japan’s promises of a $1 trillion investment in the United States and to boost Japanese purchases of US defense equipment.

Ishiba said his country was the biggest investor in the United States and would step up its spending.
The soft-spoken, cigarette-smoking Ishiba had rushed to Washington hoping to blunt the edge of Trump’s “America First” policies, with Tokyo avoiding tariffs that the US president has slapped on other allies – for now. AFP

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved the acquisition of additional vessels from Japan and France, the Philippine Coast Guard said.
PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said the Philippines will enhance its coast guard fleet with five additional 97-meter vessels from Japan and 40 more vessels from France.
“This information is an open book that the PCG would require more assets for us to safeguard our maritime rights, not just in the WPS, but for our entire maritime jurisdiction as an archipelagic country,” Tarriela said.

carrier with a destroyer, frigate, and submarine to push them away. We don’t have that,” the President said.
On Friday, Tarriela said the socalled “monster ship” was back in waters near Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Panatag Shoal.
He said two CCG vessels were also seen in Bajo de Masinloc, while three others were positioned off the coast of Zambales.
“Well, right now, CCG 3304 and CCG 5901 swapped again. CCG 5901 is once again back in the vicinity of Bajo De Masinloc at a distance of 120 nautical miles,” Tarriela said.

ACTRESS Andi Eigenmann denied speculations that her fiancé, professional surfer Philmar Alipayo, cheated on her, following a series of cryptic social media posts that fueled rumors of their breakup.
In a statement on Saturday, Eigenmann clarified that her earlier messages—including a reference to a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”— were not directed at Alipayo but at a former friend who allegedly repeatedly urged him to break up

“I am fully aware that my husband never cheated on me with this girl. I am always around when they are together. I posted because this person betrayed me, encouraged my husband to break up with me during every fight even when I also tell my side of the story to her,”
Eigenmann wrote.
The woman also convinced Alipayo to get matching tattoos, the actress said.

The woman reportedly shared a photo of the “224” tattoos that she and Alipayo got.

Eigenmann admitted feeling “hurt” by the situation but did not confirm whether she and Alipayo have officially separated.

THE Commission on Elections will start removing illegal campaign materials – including those posted outside designated areas – next week, poll body chief George Garcia said.
“We will monitor and take down materials in places where campaign materials aren’t supposed to be posted,” Garcia said in a television interview on Saturday. He also warned candidates that failure to take down materials that do not comply with the required size may lead to their disqualification. The 90-day campaign period for national positions will start on February 11, Tuesday.
Garcia, however, assured the public Comelec will not take down materials posted on private property, guided by a Supreme Court decision on the matter.

He also reminded candidates to abide by the Fair Elections Act and other election policies, including the use of biodegradable materials. Earlier, Comelec also authorized its Kontra Bigay Committee (KBC) to prevent and take legal action against individuals involved in vote buying and selling, as well as those who exploit state resources (ASR). Comelec Resolution No. 11104 defines the offense of ASR as one that “pertains to the misuse of government resources, whether material, human, coercive, regulatory, budgetary, media-related or legislative, for electoral advantage.”
Garcia also encouraged voters to report any instances of candidates attempting to buy votes and advised them against selling their votes or supporting candidates involved in such practices.

CHARTER FRAMER: SENATE IMPEACH TRIAL MUST CONVENE IMMEDIATELY
TIN BRIEF
GOVERNORS SHOULD HAVE MOTORCYCLES FOR 911
PROVINCIAL governors must acquire motorcycles for local police to ensure immediate response to reports through the country’s 911 emergency hotline, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the purchase of new motorcycles would allow the police to quickly verify the legitimacy of reported incidents, considering that 60% of total reports to 911 were prank calls. Remulla said it is a small investment for the governors to ensure that government resources will not be wasted.
During his four terms as Cavite governor, he acquired 800 police cars as logistical support to respond quickly to calls for assistance.
BI BARS SEX OFFENDERS FROM ENTERING PH
THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) barred 137 foreign nationals from entering the country in 2024 for being registered sex offenders.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the move is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen border security and protect vulnerable sectors from foreign threats. Viado added that aside from being denied entry, the excluded individuals were also placed on the BI’s blacklist of undesirable aliens, permanently banning them from returning to the country.

Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua on Saturday defended the timing of the impeachment complaint against the Vice President, stressing that refiling is unnecessary and that lawmakers took a strategic approach to ensure the case moves forward. Citing the Constitution, he pointed out that once an impeachment case reaches the Senate, proceedings must begin immediately. Chua, who is also chair of the

“You know that lawyers sometimes have different interpretations of a law—this depends on what your beliefs are and how you understand it,” he said.
The timing of the impeachment trial has sparked debate, with lawmakers weighing the challenges of holding proceedings amid the election season.

SURVEY: ONLY 1 IN 3 PINOYS SEES BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE
By Rachelle Tonelada
A NEW Stratbase and Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey shows that only around 1 in 3 Filipinos believe their quality of life has improved over the past year.
The survey found that 43 percent of respondents said their situation remained the same, while 25% felt their lives had worsened.

20, the survey used face-to-face interviews with 1,800 registered voters nationwide—300 in Metro Manila, 900 in Balance Luzon (Luzon outside Metro Manila), 300 in the Visayas, and 300 in Mindanao. Respondents were asked: “Comparing your quality of life these days to how it was 12 months ago, would you say that your quality of life is BETTER NOW THAN BEFORE, SAME AS BEFORE, or WORSE NOW
THAN BEFORE?”
Those who said their lives improved were classified as “gainers,” while those who said it worsened were called “losers.”
Data showed that 109 Americans topped the list of those barred, followed by 12 Britons, five Australians, three Germans, and two Canadians. Also excluded were a citizen from American Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Japan, Ireland, and the British Indian Ocean Territory. Of those intercepted, 112 were stopped at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), while 20 were turned away at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and five at Clark International Airport. The SWS earlier released a separate survey report showing that 6 out of 10 Filipinos or 63% rate themselves poor, which is the highest in 21 years since 64% in November 2003.
The same report indicated 51% of families rated themselves as Food-Poor underscoring a correlation between poverty and access to food.
The survey recorded a net gainers score of +7, lower than the “very high” +13 recorded in December and September 2024. Balance Luzon had the highest net gainers score at +13 (very high), followed by Metro Manila at +9 (high), the Visayas at +2 (high), and Mindanao at -2 (fair).

NFA CHIEF SAYS NO RICE STOCKS RELEASED FROM GOV’T WAREHOUSES
NO rice stocks have been released from National Food Authority (NFA) warehouses since the declaration of a food security emergency earlier this week, NFA Larry Lacson said. Lacson, in a radio interview, said: “As of now, we haven’t received any reports of NFA rice being released since the declaration.”
On Monday, Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Fran -
cisco Tiu Laurel Jr. declared a food security emergency concerning rice, following recommendations from the National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC). This move was prompted by persistently high rice prices, despite reduced production costs and lower tariffs on imported rice.
THE National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has intensified its crackdown on the illegal firearms trade, resulting in the arrest of a suspect during an entrapment operation conducted by the District Special Operations Unit (DSOU) of the Southern Police District (SPD). The operation occurred in a parking lot along Don Chino Roces Avenue Extension in Barangay Magallanes, Makati City. The suspect is a 25-year-old student from Quezon City, arrested for the illegal sale of firearms in violation of Republic Act 7166 and the Commission on Elections Resolution 11067 (Gun Ban), which strictly prohibits unauthorized firearm transactions during the election period. SRI LANKA PROBES TOURIST DEATHS FROM PEST FUMIGATION
COLOMBO—Sri Lankan police said Saturday they were investigating the death of two foreign tourists, suspected to have succumbed to poisoning after the fumigation against insects in their hostel rooms. The tourists, both women, a 24-year-old Briton and a 26-year-old German, were discovered sick in their hostel rooms in the capital Colombo. The Briton, whose family named as Ebony McIntosh, died in hospital on February 2, the same day she had arrived in the hostel.
The German woman died on February 3, police said.
A German man is still receiving treatment in hospital. Police said tests had been carried out to determine if the deaths were caused by poisoning due to the fumigation of the room.
Sri Lankan media reported that the hostel had been fumigated for bed bugs and other pests days before, and said that the hostel had been closed by the police. AFP
AIRBUS AND BOEING EYE ‘SOARING SKIES’ OF INDIA MARKET
ASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Friday revoked his predecessor Joe Biden’s security clearance in a blizzard of new orders, while escalating his campaign to dismantle the US humanitarian agency charged with helping the world’s poorest and extending American influence around the globe.
In a new series of rapid-fire power plays, the 78-year-old billionaire also froze aid to South Africa, where his top donor Elon Musk was born, and named himself head of one of Washington’s premier cultural venues, the Kennedy Center.
“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump said on his Truth Social network, adding that he was “immediately” revoking the Democrat’s security clearances and ending his daily intelligence briefings.
concentrated fire since Trump launched a crusade led by Musk — the world’s richest person — to downsize or dismantle swaths of the US government.
constitutional for Trump to shut down government agencies without the legislature’s green light.
NEW DELHI — Air traffic is booming in India, even though only a tiny fraction of its people fly each year, and manufacturers are seeking lucrative deals at the flagship Aero India exhibition from Monday. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will also hold its annual general meeting in June in New Delhi, the capital of the world’s fifth-largest economy, another clear sign of India’s market punch.
The United States’ current budget allocates about $70 billion for international assistance, a tiny fraction of overall spending.
The sustained growth of its economy and middle class have made India and its 1.4 billion people the third-largest air market in the world, after the United States and China.
Trump also stepped up his assault on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which distributes humanitarian aid globally.
“THE CORRUPTION IS AT LEVELS RARELY SEEN BEFORE. CLOSE IT DOWN!” he wrote on his Truth Social app about USAID, without offering evidence.
“JOE, YOU’RE FIRED,” he added in all caps. US presidents are traditionally given the right to receive intelligence briefings even after they step down.
USAID has received the most
On Friday, Musk — who along with Trump has spread blatantly false information about USAID’s finances — reposted photos of the agency’s signage being removed from its Washington headquarters.
The Trump administration has frozen foreign aid, ordered thousands of internationally-based staff to return to the United States, and begun slashing the USAID headcount of 10,000 employees to around only 300.
Labor unions are challenging the legality of the onslaught. A federal judge on Friday ordered a pause to the administration’s plan to put 2,200 USAID workers on paid leave by the weekend.
Democrats say it would be un-
But it gets a big bang for its buck. USAID alone runs health and emergency programs in around 120 countries, including in the world’s poorest regions, boosting Washington’s battle for influence against rivals such as China.
“We are witnessing one of the worst and most costly foreign policy blunders in US history,” Samantha Power, the USAID chief under former president Joe Biden, wrote in a scathing New York Times opinion piece. Hard-right Republicans and libertarians have long questioned the need for USAID and criticized what they say is wasteful spending abroad. AFP
HAMAS, ISRAEL TO BEGIN 5TH HOSTAGE-PRISONER SWAP
DEIR el-Balah, Palestinian Territories—Hamas is set to release three Israeli hostages in exchange for 183 prisoners held by Israel in the fifth exchange of a fragile Gaza ceasefire.
The swap comes after President Donald Trump proposed clearing out the Gaza Strip of its inhabitants and for the United States to take over the Palestinian territory — a plan that has sparked global uproar and been rejected by Hamas.
Dozens of armed Hamas fighters formed a cordon around an open area in the city of Deir el-Balah early Saturday, apparently to control crowds eager to watch the hostage release.
As with past exchanges, a stage was erected for the occasion, festooned with a banner bearing im-
ages of destroyed Israeli armored vehicles and a dejected-looking Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister.
In Tel Aviv’s “Hostages Square,” where hundreds were expected later to watch the handover, a huge screen counted down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds since Hamas’s unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack, when the hostages were first seized.
Netanyahu’s office confirmed to AFP on Friday that it had received a list of the three hostages due to be released after Hamas first published their names.
They are Eli Sharabi, Or Levy, and Ohad Ben Ami. Sharabi, 52, was at his home in kibbutz Beeri with his British-born wife and their two daughters when
Hamas stormed it.
The armed men shot their dog, before locking the family in their safe room and setting it on fire.
The bodies of his wife and two daughters were later identified.
Levy was abducted from the Nova music festival, where gunmen murdered his wife. Ben Ami, who has dual Israeli-German citizenship, turned 56 in captivity.
Former hostage Yarden Bibas, who was freed last week by Hamas militants in Gaza, on Friday urged Netanyahu to help bring back his wife and two children from the Palestinian territory.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu, I’m now addressing you with my own words... bring my family back, bring my friends back, bring everyone home,” Bibas said in his first public
NO SURVIVORS AFTER ALASKA PLANE WRECKAGE FOUND
LOS ANGELES—The wreckage of a plane that went missing in Alaska has been found, US officials said Friday, with all 10 people aboard thought to have died.
The US Coast Guard said it had discovered the remnants of the Bering Air Caravan around 55 kilometers from Nome.
“Three individuals were found inside and reported to be deceased,” the Coast Guard posted on social media.
“The remaining seven people are believed to be inside the aircraft but are currently inaccessible due to the condition of the plane.”
Nome’s volunteer fire department, which had scrambled in the search for the plane, said on Facebook it was helping with recovery.
“The Nome Search and Rescue Team is spooling up with assistance from the Alaska Air National Guard with recovery efforts,” a post said.
“From reports we have received, the crash was not
survivable. Our thoughts are with the families at this time.” The privately operated plane, with nine passengers and one pilot on board, was reported overdue Thursday on a flight from Unalakleet to Nome, Alaska state police said. The two cities are located roughly 150 miles apart across the Norton Sound, on the state’s west coast.
According to publicly available information, the plane’s last known position was over the water around 40 minutes after takeoff. The crash is the latest incident in a string of aviation disasters in the United States.
On January 30, a passenger jet collided midair with a US Army helicopter in Washington, killing all 67 people aboard both aircraft.
The disaster was followed closely by the crash of a medical plane into a busy Philadelphia neighborhood, killing seven and injuring 19. AFP

Hamas previously said his wife Shiri and his two sons Ariel and Kfir —the youngest hostages—were dead, but Israel has not confirmed their deaths.
Netanyahu, who is in Washington, will “monitor this phase of the hostages’ release from the control center of the delegation in the US,” the premier’s office said in a separate statement.
The Hostage and Missing Families Forum urged the government on Friday to stick with the Gaza truce, even as Trump’s comments sparked backlash across the Middle East and beyond.
“An entire nation demands to see the hostages return home,” the Israeli campaign group said in a statement. AFP

“It’s the most dynamic market on the planet — and certainly the most exciting,” Boeing India head Salil Gupte told AFP. AFP

SRTX is Kickstart’s first foray into the advanced materials and manufacturing sector, and Maté has played a pivotal role in these strategic investments.

YULO, TEAM PH BRACE FOR MAJOR GYMNASTICS RULES CHANGES
By Peter Atencio
FILIPINO
gymnastics
star Carlos Yulo and his teammates are preparing for a challenging year ahead as they gear up for international competitions under a revised scoring system.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has introduced a significant overhaul in the Code of Points for the 2025-2028 Olympic cycle. These changes will impact how gymnasts are judged, requiring adjustments from athletes, coaches, and officials alike.
One of the most notable updates is the introduction of a 1/10th bonus for stuck dismounts—landings executed with a perfectly straight body—on all apparatus except the pommel horse. This bonus applies to dismounts with a difficulty rating of C or higher, making precision in landings more crucial than ever.
Yulo, 24, acknowledged the challenge ahead, particularly as he prepares for the Asian Championships in Jecheon, South Korea, this June.
“As an athlete, maintaining consistency is tough. But I will try my best,” said Yulo.
The revised Code of Points introduces stricter angle evaluations, addressing concerns that previous judging had been too lenient. Additionally, strength skills executed within five degrees of perfect form will now receive no deductions, encouraging athletes to refine their technique.
Another signi cant shift is the reduction in the number of di culty elements considered for scoring. Previously, judges evaluated the top 10 skills in a routine— now, only the best eight will count toward a gymnast’s nal score.
According to national team coach Aldrin Castañeda, this will result in lower overall

DOHA FRIENDLIES
TO
INTEGRATE
EDU, MALONZO AHEAD OF ASIA CUP QUALIFIERS
GILAS Pilipinas will fly to Doha, Qatar, for a series of tune-up games before resuming their FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers campaign against Chinese Taipei and New Zealand later this month.
With a awless 4-0 record in Group B, the Philippines has already secured its spot in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, set to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this August. Head coach Tim Cone views the upcoming friendlies in Doha, as well as the away games against Chinese Taipei (February 20) and New Zealand (February 23), as crucial preparation for the big tournament six months from now.
“The Doha trip is not just for this immediate window, since we’ve already quali ed, but as preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup in August,” Cone explained. “We’re not 100% sure how many preparation days we’ll have in August, so this trip will help us reintegrate AJ Edu and Jamie Malonzo while also adjusting to playing without Kai Sotto.”
The decision to hold the Qatar friendlies was made with this longterm goal in mind.
“If we weren’t already quali ed, we wouldn’t be going to Doha. We’d focus entirely on beating Chinese Taipei and New Zealand. We know the travel will be tough—Doha to Taipei to New Zealand in just a few days—but the tougher, the better. It’s all part of the preparation,” Cone added.
Adjusting Without Kai Sotto Gilas will have to navigate the rest of the year without 7-foot-3 center Kai Sotto, who underwent surgery on February 2 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The injury, sustained during a Japan B.League game with the Koshigaya Alphas, will sideline him for up to a year.
Barangay Ginebra’s Troy Rosario has been called up to take Sotto’s spot in the lineup. Additionally,
Gilas’ Qatar Schedule: February 15, 1:30 AM (Manila time) – vs. No. 92 Qatar
February 15, 11:00 PM – vs. No. 29 Lebanon
February 17, 1:30 AM – vs. No. 38 Egypt
Japeth Aguilar will miss the Qatar games, with La Salle standout Mason Amos likely lling his role.
Despite Sotto’s absence, Cone remains optimistic.
“He’s young—just 22. If you’re going to have an injury like this, now’s the time. He’ll recover well,” Cone said. “It sounds cruel, but our philosophy has always been to feel bad for 10 minutes, then move on. There’s nothing you can do about it.”
Chua: Doha Games Vital for Adjustments
Gilas Pilipinas Program Director and Team Manager Alfrancis Chua echoed Cone’s sentiments, emphasizing that the Qatar games are essential for ne-tuning the team
before the quali ers.
“This is part of our training for Chinese Taipei and New Zealand, especially now that Kai won’t be playing,” Chua said. “Instead of just practicing here, the team will gain experience and chemistry from actual high-level games. It also gives our big men bigger roles in Kai’s absence while AJ Edu reintegrates into the squad.”
Edu is coming o a knee injury, while Malonzo has recently returned from a calf injury sustained in April.
In the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, Gilas opened their campaign with a 94-64 road win against Hong Kong and then followed it up with a 106-53 crushing of Chinese Taipei at home.
In the second window, Gilas scored their rst victory in a FIBA tournament against New Zealand in a 93-89 thriller followed by a 93-54 win over Hong Kong, both at home.
With Gilas already having a slot for the FIBA Asia Cup, the SBP’s goal now is to make sure they have the best preparation possible and this starts with the Third Window of the Qualifiers.

scores across competitions.
“The scoring system has changed, so we need to study the new rules carefully,” Castañeda explained. With the updated scoring system in e ect, Yulo and his teammates—John Ivan Cruz, Juancho Miguel Besana, Jan Timbang, Justine Ace de Leon, and Jhon Romeo Santillan—are working under Castañeda’s close supervision.
The adjustments require gymnasts to strategically construct their routines, ensuring their most difficult and well-executed skills are included in their final score.
“For this Olympic cycle, instead of 10, only eight skills will be counted. That means gymnasts must build their routines creatively,” said Castañeda.
To further strengthen the team, the coaching staff has also allowed young gymnast Eldrew Yulo to join training sessions.

The 17-year-old rhythmic gymnastics prodigy, who traces her Filipino roots to Santa Catalina, Ilocos Sur, recently bagged a gold and two bronze medals at the International Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament–Olympia 74 Cup in So a, Bulgaria. She proudly represented the Philippines as the country’s lone competitor, under the guidance of Coach Claudia Mancinelli of Ginnastica Fabriano.
“After the competition in Bulgaria, she barely had time to rest. She just dropped by home, packed her things, and left again for Marche, where she trains with other athletes,” said her mother, Fhey Ramilo. “She maintains a demanding schedule but balances everything so well. We’re really happy for her.”
Currently based in Fabriano, Marche, Ramilo sees her family only on weekends—sometimes even less when she has international tournaments.
“We don’t worry because we know she’s in good hands with Coach Claudia,” her mother added. Beyond her passion for rhythmic gymnastics, Ramilo remains dedicated to her academics. Turning 17 next month, she embodies discipline and perseverance, traits her mother deeply admires.
“We know it’s not easy for her, but her dedication allows her to push through every challenge,” Fhey shared.
The road to the 2028 Olympics is still long, and the family acknowledges the hurdles ahead. “We’re taking it one step at a time. There are many competitions ahead, and we hope to nd sponsors to support her journey,” she said with a hopeful smile. Thanks to her impressive performances, the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) is lining her up for a series of Olympic quali cation events.
“We are considering her for the Los Angeles Olympic quali cations. She has a busy year ahead,” said GAP Secretary-General Rowena Bautista. Gymnastics o cials believe Ramilo has the potential to follow in the footsteps of double-gold medalist Carlos Yulo, who shined in the Paris Olympics. Notably, she made history as the rst Filipino rhythmic gymnast to win a medal at the Asian Championships.

THE RIGHT WAY TO PICK UP, HOLD, AND CARRY YOUR DOG
By Mariana Burgos
WHEN it comes to caring for dogs, knowing how to properly pick them up, hold them, and carry them is essential for both the pet's comfort and the owner's safety. Understanding the correct techniques can make a significant difference, especially for smaller breeds or dogs recovering from injuries.
Why Proper Handling Matters
Handling a dog incorrectly can lead to injury for both the animal and the person involved. Picking up a dog the wrong way can cause stress and fear in the pet, making them anxious or even aggressive. According to the article "How to Pick Up a Dog" by Arlene Weintraub on the GoodRx website, improper lifting can also lead to back injuries for the owner. The potential for harm underscores the need to learn the right techniques for lifting and carrying dogs, which not only promotes a positive experience but also strengthens the bond between the owner and their furry friend.
Assessing the Situation
Before picking up a dog, it is important to carefully assess the situation. Factors to consider include:
• Size and Weight: Knowing the dog's size can help determine if it is manageable to lift them. Smaller dogs may be easier to handle than larger breeds, which require more strength and technique.
• Temperament: A calm dog may be easier to pick up than one that is anxious or excitable. Understanding the dog's mood can save both parties from a stressful encounter.
• Health Status: Dogs recovering from surgery or with mobility issues may require special handling. Identifying any health concerns beforehand ensures that the dog is lifted in a way that does not exacerbate existing conditions.

Taking these factors into account, according to Weintraub, can help ensure a smooth lifting process and a positive experience for the dog.
Step-by-Step Guide to Picking Up a Dog
1. Approach Calmly
Approaching a dog quietly and calmly is crucial. This helps the dog feel safe and reduces the chance of startling them. It is advisable to speak softly and maintain a relaxed body posture. A gentle approach sets the tone for the interaction and encourages the dog to be more receptive, according to Weintraub.
2. Assess the Dog's Comfort Level
Weintraub suggests, before attempting to pick up the dog, it is best to gauge their comfort level. If the dog seems anxious or tries to move away, it may be best to avoid lifting them. Instead, consider using treats or toys to coax them gently. This not only builds trust but also makes the lifting process smoother.
3. Positioning
• Small Dogs: For smaller breeds, like Chihuahuas or Pomeranians, the ideal way to lift is to position one hand under the dog’s chest and the other hand supporting its hindquarters. This ensures that the dog's weight is evenly distributed and reduces the risk of injury, says Weintraub.
• Medium to Large Dogs: For larger dogs, it is generally safer to allow them to step onto a stable

surface like a low table or bed before lifting. If lifting is necessary, Weintraub suggests that the handler should bend at the knees, keeping the back straight, and slide one arm under the dog’s belly while using the other arm to support the hindquarters. This technique not only protects the dog's body but also minimizes strain on the handler's back as Weintraub points out.
4. Holding the Dog
Once lifted, it is important to hold the dog securely. Weintraub, in the GoodRx article, emphasizes the following points:
• Keep the Dog Close: Holding the dog close to the body provides security and comfort for the animal. This close contact helps the dog feel more secure and less likely to squirm.
• Avoid Excessive Movement: Sudden or jerky movements can frighten the dog. Instead, move slowly and steadily. Gradual and gentle movements help maintain the dog’s calmness and reduce the risk of accidents.
5. Carrying the Dog: An Essential Skill for Pet Owners
When it comes to carrying a dog, maintaining a stable posture is crucial for both the handler and the pet. The ideal way to hold a dog is to keep its body parallel to the ground. This technique, Weintraub claims, helps to minimize any potential strain on the dog’s spine, which is especially important for the animal's overall health. Moreover, it is advisable to limit the duration of carrying to prevent fatigue, ensuring that the dog remains comfortable throughout the process.

Training Your Dog to Be Comfortable with Lifting
To facilitate a smoother experience when lifting a dog, Weintraub offers handlers some practical tips:
• Positive Reinforcement: Utilizing treats and verbal praise can greatly encourage a dog to accept being picked up. This approach reinforces the behavior, making it more likely for the dog to remain calm during the lifting process.
• Practice: Gradual practice in a calm environment helps build the dog's comfort and trust. This step is vital, as it allows the dog to become familiar with the sensation of being lifted without feeling anxious.
• Consistency: Regularly handling the dog can significantly help it adapt to being lifted. Consistency in training, as Weintraub tells us, fosters a sense of security and predictability, making the dog more comfortable with the process over time.
Understanding the correct techniques for picking up, holding, and carrying a dog is an important skill for any dog owner. By employing the strategies outlined in Weintraub's article, dog owners can ensure a safe and comfortable experience for both themselves and their furry companions. With patience and practice, lifting and carrying a dog can seamlessly integrate into daily routines, strengthening the bond between pet and owner.

COMMON HOUSEPLANTS THAT CAN BE TOXIC TO PETS
BRINGING greenery into the home is a popular way to enhance the aesthetic appeal and improve the air quality. However, many common houseplants can be toxic to pets, posing a potential health risk. It is crucial to be aware of these plants and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of furry companions.
Popular Plants That Can Be Harmful
Numerous houseplants are commonly found in homes and can be dangerous to pets. As mentioned in the article, "Plants That Are Dangerous to Pets," written by Four Paws, some of these include:
• Lilies: All parts of lilies, including the flowers, leaves, and pollen, are highly toxic to cats. Ingestion can lead to severe kidney failure, even in small amounts.
• Aloe Vera: While the gel from aloe vera plants is known for its healing properties, the plant itself is toxic to cats and dogs. Ingesting aloe vera can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.
• Peace Lily: Peace lilies, despite their peaceful name, contain calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, tongue, and digestive tract of pets.
• Pothos: Pothos, also known as devil's ivy, is a popular houseplant due to its easy care requirements. However, it can cause oral irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea in pets.
• Snake Plant: Snake plants, known for their resilience and air-purifying properties, contain saponins, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and drooling in pets.
• ZZ Plants: ZZ plants are known for their lowmaintenance nature, but they contain calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth and digestive system of pets.
Signs of Plant Toxicity in Pets
When a pet ingests a toxic plant, it is crucial for pet owners to be vigilant and recognize the signs of poisoning promptly. As highlighted in the article, "Top 10 Toxic Household Plants for Pets," by VCA Hospitals, various symptoms can manifest, indicating that a pet may have consumed a harmful substance. Understanding these signs can be vital for ensuring the health and safety of pets.
Common Symptoms of Plant Poisoning
The symptoms of plant poisoning can vary depending on the type of plant ingested and the amount consumed. However, several common indicators are frequently observed:
• Vomiting: This is often the first sign of plant poisoning, as the body attempts to expel the toxic substance. Vomiting can occur shortly after ingestion and may be accompanied by other symptoms.
• Diarrhea: Similar to vomiting, diarrhea is another mechanism through which the body seeks to eliminate toxins. It can lead to dehydration if not addressed promptly.
• Drooling: Excessive drooling may indicate irritation in the mouth and digestive tract. This symptom can be particularly concerning if it persists.
• Lethargy: A noticeable decrease in energy levels is common. Pets may appear sluggish and less active than usual, which can be a sign of distress.
• Loss of Appetite: A sudden decrease in appetite is often observed in pets that have ingested toxic plants. This can be a significant indicator of underlying health issues.
• Tremors: Some pets may experience tremors or
shaking, which can be alarming. This symptom may indicate a more severe reaction to the toxin.
• Difficulty Breathing: In severe cases, plant poisoning can lead to respiratory distress. This is a critical symptom that requires immediate veterinary attention.
Action Steps in Case of Poisoning
If a pet is suspected of having ingested a toxic plant, it is essential to take immediate action to mitigate potential harm. The following steps are recommended:
1. Remove the Plant from the Pet's Reach: This action prevents further ingestion and minimizes the risk of additional exposure to the toxin.
2. Contact Your Veterinarian: Seeking professional guidance is crucial. Veterinarians can provide specific recommendations based on the symptoms observed and the type of plant involved.
3. Observe Your Pet for Any Signs of Poisoning: Monitoring the pet's behavior and noting any symptoms is important. This information can be invaluable when discussing the situation with a veterinarian.
4. If Possible, Take a Sample of the Plant with You to the Vet: Having a sample of the plant can assist the veterinarian in identifying the toxic substance and determining the appropriate course of treatment.
Strategies for Preventing Plant Poisoning
The most effective method for safeguarding pets from plant toxicity lies in preventing their access to harmful plants. This can be achieved through a combination of preventative measures, including: • Selection of Pet-Friendly Plants: A wide array of
beautiful and safe plants can be incorporated into the home environment without jeopardizing the health of pets. Researching and selecting plants known to be non-toxic to animals is a crucial step in creating a safe and enjoyable living space for both humans and pets.
• Strategic Placement of Toxic Plants: When incorporating plants known to be toxic to pets, careful consideration should be given to their placement. Positioning these plants in high areas, behind barriers, or in rooms that pets cannot access effectively minimizes the risk of accidental ingestion.
• Active Supervision: Maintaining constant vigilance and monitoring the behavior of pets around plants is essential. Observing any signs of interest in chewing or ingesting plants should prompt immediate intervention.
• Continuous Education: Staying abreast of common toxic plants and their associated symptoms is a vital aspect of responsible pet ownership. Regularly updating knowledge about plant toxicity allows for informed decision-making regarding plant selection and placement. While houseplants can undoubtedly contribute to

FEBRUARY 9, 2025

IN a time when love songs often lean towards grand gestures or heartbreak anthems, one band is reviving a tradition long forgotten—harana. Meet PAHAM, a rising OPM band with a sound they proudly call “haranapop.”
Harana is a traditional Filipino practice of courtship that involves a young man serenading his love interest, often at night. The act usually includes the man, sometimes accompanied by friends or a musical group, singing romantic songs outside the woman’s home to express his affection and win her heart.
Bringing harana into the modern era
“We want to bring back the traditional serenade,” says James lead guitarist of PAHAM. “But we also want to give it a modern twist so that even while we’re serenading, different generations can still relate.”
Their self-titled debut album, Paham, is a collection of 12 tracks inspired by personal experiences and the emotions they want to share with their listeners.
“We want people to feel different emotions—but positive emotions,” they emphasize.
One of their favorite tracks, “Gunita,” embodies this message perfectly. “It’s about giving assurance to your partner—that no matter what happens, he will always choose you,” one of the members shares.
Composed of Kian, James, Simon Yuan, and Ryen PAHAM is a group of students and music enthusiasts bound by their love for OPM and deep Tagalog words. Their name, which means “wise men” in ancient Tagalog, reflects their appreciation for Filipino culture and language.
Originally classmates and churchmates, they found each other through music, with drummer Ryen joining after watching one of their gigs.
With their music deeply rooted in romance, it’s no surprise that PAHAM considers themselves “lover boys.” In fact, most of them have personally serenaded their partners.
Harana all the way,” they say in unison.
This makes their music the perfect soundtrack for Valentine’s Day. Their sound blends oldschool romance with modern production, making it an ideal choice for couples who want to relive the magic of traditional courtship.
Despite being a young band, PAHAM dreams of playing in front of a massive crowd. Their influences range from Dilaw and The Juans to The 1975 and Rex Orange County—all artists known for deep connection with audiences.

TREET fashion is all about embracing individuality through subtle,
It’s not about following flashy trends or making bold statements, but rather about combining comfort, simplicity, and creativity in unexpected ways.
From well-worn sneakers to oversized jackets and muted colors, street fashion allows the wearer to express themselves without needing to stand out in a crowd. It’s a celebration of urban
is often more, and beauty lies in the details.
With these principles in mind, global apparel retailer Uniqlo unveiled its latest collection for “Uniqlo : C,” a special line designed by renowned British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller, on Feb. 4.
Known for her sophisticated yet effortless designs, Keller’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection for both men and women focuses on functional materials and innovations that create an elevated, everyday urban uniform.
The collection prominently features nylon, a material originally used in sportswear that is both light and cool to the touch. Its smooth, breathable texture is paired with playful contrasts in color and design, resulting in a sophisticated yet comfortable collection.
Keller’s vision for this collection is clear: “This Spring, I wanted to embrace two key elements. The first is nylon. In recent years, polyester has dominated sportswear and daywear, even luxury ready-to-wear.”
“I wanted to return to sportswear’s roots, using nylon’s cool touch and fluid finish. Incorporating it into dress volumes, soft shirting, and running shorts and vests, I created a modern, sporty feel,” added Keller, who was recognized as Womenswear
Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2018 and as one of TIME magazine’s most influential people in 2019.

Color also plays a pivotal role in the collection, with Keller experimenting with hues such as soft oranges that create a beautiful tonal richness in the pieces. This collection blurs the line between casual and formal, offering versatile designs that can be worn in various settings. Men’s wide-fit cargo shorts are paired with clean shirts, while the women’s Miracle Air Double Jacket, a lightweight, stretchy, and quickdrying piece, pairs well with Bermuda shorts or pleated wide pants to create a summer tailoring effect.
A fusion of sophisticated design and functional materials continues with pieces such as women’s gathered dresses, fullzip vests, and geared shorts, all made from nylon. These designs offer comfort and practicality, ideal for the spring and summer seasons. The sporty hooded pullover shirt, made of poplin fabric in deep navy and pinstripe, adds a refined touch to the casual aesthetic.

by influencer marketing firm GRIN reveals that Gen Z shoppers are increasingly turning to social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok for product discovery rather than traditional online search engines like Google.
Gen Z shoppers are turning to social media platforms, with 30.4 percent using Instagram and 23.2 percent using TikTok. Only 18.8 percent rely on Google, while 42.45 percent of Millennials and 55.9 percent of Boomers still favor the search engine.
The findings, based on a survey of over 1,000 U.S. consumers, underscore social media’s growing influence on younger shoppers, who prioritize visually driven platforms for their buying decisions.

THE SHANGRI-LA MACTAN EXPERIENCE
By Jenny Fatima Macatiag
THE queen city of the south is sure to be among the top vacation destinations in 2025. A trip to Cebu is akin to receiving a gift of historical enrichment, wrapped in local festivities, customs, and food.
We visited Shangri-La Mactan, and what we discovered is that a trip here is more than just a stay. It is a complete experience filled with fun and adventure for all ages.
Arrival in Mactan
We met Shangri-La Mactan’s airport representative at the baggage claim area and were led to the private car that would take us to the hotel. The drive took less than 30 minutes.
The open-concept design of Shangri-La Mactan’s lobby is a refreshing reminder that we have arrived in paradise. The sweeping views of the ocean from the lobby instantly removed the tension of the workweek. The waters were calling, and we had responded.
After a quick check-in, we were able to rest in our hotel room before heading down for lunch. Shangri-La Mactan’s gastronomical journey had begun.
Lunch at Tea of Spring
Located on the garden level of the main wing, Tea of Spring is an elegant Chinese restaurant offering Cantonese-style dishes. We savored the dim sum before the pièce de résistance: the Peking-style roasted duck, which we enjoyed in two courses. The first was sliced and rolled in Chinese pancakes, and the second was wok-fried minced duck. This was definitely a very satisfying experience for the palate.
A feast for the senses
After getting acquainted with the

Tides, an international buffet offering diverse dining options day and night.
A much-awaited event during dinners is the lechon parade. Guests, both local and foreign, flock to the buffet table to get their share of Cebu’s tasty fare.

Sustainability and responsible eco-tourism
In line with Shangri-La’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, Shangri-La’s Care for Nature program was launched. Their marine sanctuary spans six hectares from their private beach.
We were inspired when we learned how to plant corals in the resort’s coral farm, just a few meters from the beach. This family activity is a favorite among kids. Along with snorkeling and fish feeding, this is surely an effective way of teaching children about sustainability and responsible eco-tourism.
Another fun activity for the family is the eco trail walk along Shangri-La’s green route filled with foliage. The sanctuary features a growing collection of endemic, medicinal, rare, and endangered plants sprawled across the 13-hectare resort. Resort ranger Analyn walked with us and provided insightful information about the trees and plants along the way. The Shangri-La eco trail rangers underwent extensive training from the University of San Carlos and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. They help curate a great learning experience for the whole family. There is always excitement in creating something in a brick oven and then eating it. Guided by Shangri-La’s chefs, kids and adults alike had the time of our lives creating our own pizzas.
This fun-filled family activity comes with a certificate of completion, souvenir aprons, and chef hats.
CONRAD Manila offers an idyllic setting for couples this Valentine’s season with thoughtfully curated experiences, including indulgent buffets, themed afternoon teas, and special set menus. The hotel’s romantic offerings are made even more memorable with a heartwarming fireworks display by the bay.

The Kasadya night at Shangri-La Mactan’s Buko Bar offers a Filipino-themed dinner buffet and dances from every region in the Philippines.
We were seated near the stage, and the show made me proud to be Filipino as I watched guests of different nationalities smile and clap enthusiastically after each performance.
Extending beyond the experience for the taste buds are Shangri-La’s numerous activities. There is more to explore, even just inside the huge expanse of the property.

A complete vacation The resort also offers healing experiences for the body and soul. We tried the traditional Philippine hilot massage, which is their most popular treatment. Virgin coconut oil and warmed banana leaves are used in the treatment. This massage was so relaxing, and we were told that it helps with blockages and the detection of energy imbalances.
A few days would not be enough to completely experience the food, the activities, and the warmth of great service. At this hotel, we were delighted by what the sea and the comforts of a luxury resort can offer. We would return in a heartbeat.
For an intimate experience, C Lounge also offers a set dinner on the veranda from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., which includes a bottle of wine, bouquet, box of pralines, and more.
