SOPHOMORE TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D.C.: silly, serious, sad, sensational, scenic . .. The Sophomore Class visited the Embassy of Greece in May . It was a typical field trip, with a long bus ride in dressy clothes, a formal visit to the Embassy, and a trip to a Greek restaurant which took a very long time because the driver kept getting lost and circling around and around. Mrs . Meyer, who has seen "European Vacation," kept saying, "Look, kids - the Tower of London! Big Ben!" The confusion was worth the time , when the group finally arrived at the Greek restaurant, which was great. Will Wynne surprised everyone with his dashing bow tie, seen here waiting for lunch with David Burnstine. After lunch the group went to the Vietnam War Memorial, which was an emotional experience and caused a thoughtful discussion between David, Lee Kallman, Eric Elkin and Doug Hinckley. The spirit of the Wall was captured in the photo below.

Laughter is a part of life at Steward. Fahad Qureshi makes his big brother Faisal laugh. John Cabell Chenault looks silly in his checkered pants and oversized tie, while Matt Montgomery models the more traditional school attire. Burkeley Goodloe watches a well路disguised classmate at the Halloween party, which was also fun for the fifth graders in the picture above . Classic Styles were "in"

In the classroom and around campus, the simple classic styles were popular with the students of Steward. Anne Blair Scott wears a classic collared sweater with dropped shoulders. Matt Lord chose a classic sweater for warmth and style. Lael Meem liked the oversized sweater and full skirt for comfort and style. These were the "norm." But we were not always "classic"!

Just let a Spartan step into the sunlight and on go the shades! Shades were popular with all ages, as Welly Sanders demonstrated at a basketball game (sure, wear them indoors, too, if you want. Just don 't get caught!) Mr. Cramer enjoys out路 door sports more without the glare of the sun. Miss Rice , Mrs . Paulette and Katie Seitz wear their shades with panache .

Strange headgear. . . John Janha's Giants cap was a familiar sight in the '88/89 year, and In the Lower School Halloween gave ears to Adia Parham-Washington, shown being made up by Chris Siaydon_ On the preceding page, Matt Lord looks with envy (?) at Mr_ Coddington's coaching outfit; Joe Vilseck displays the "in" fashion for Indoor athletic events, with a shirt UNTUCKED but legal at games_ Cathy Cooper was really together with an oversized white turtleneck, a long chain necklace, and an oversized Land's End jacket which almost covered her fingers_ The faceless wonder making a point displays one of the less popular styles: the faceless look _Our spies tell us that the faceless one was Mike Boston, but we wouldn't swear to that! Lathrop Lybrook can'l believe that she gets to exper ience a friday afternoon of fun , as the Mid路 die School hosted the traditional Halloween celebration.

Can you believe that the kindergarten class raised baby finches? This class anXiously cared for a pair of adult finches and their newborn babies which were hatched right In the classroom. From finches to fr ogs to chickens. these young students learned about nature and the world around them . From Halloween to Hanukkah to Valentines, excited students celebrated the various customs and traditions of holidays throughout the year. Clanlc children's theater such as Rumple.tlli.kln , Thumbelina, Snow While and Red Rose, and The City Mouse and the Country Mouse prOVided fasc ination and excitement for first year students at Steward. With looks of disbelief, these young people were also Introduced to their first round of academics, as they found out about " A, B, C's" and "1, 2, 3's."

A special award went to the first grade class at The Steward School for bringing In the most Safe way grocery store receipts. These receipts are used to help win microcomputers for the classroom. The first grade could not believe that they were rewarded with a picniC and a Ice cream party for their diligent efforts in supporting their school. In addition to enjoying the school 's traditional events such as the visit to the Ashland Berry Farm, this class also extended their science curriculum with a visit to Maymont Park as they explored the " senses." Learning about American Indians and their customs was an exciting experience, as this class traveled to the Valentine Museum to view their Indian exhibit. Winning contests and taking field trips were only a few of the new and amazing things for first graders at Steward.

SECOND GRADERS BELIEVE IN BIG

BUSINESS

"Chilly Willy's, anyone?" The second grade called this out for several months in the second semester, as they sold the frozen fruit treats In order to raise money to purchase a large ad in this yearbook and to buy a gift for the school. Counting money each day, as well as numerous "Chilly Willy's", was good business experience. In addition to this, second grade won the Thanks路 giving canned food drive for the Lower School, and was rewarded for their efforts of good will with a six foot submariM sandwich and all the trimmings for a great lunch . They performed " Where the Wild Things Are" before the Lower School. The play , based on the children's book of the same name, brought many unusual creatures to life on the stage.

During March, the third grade busily prepared for their Lower School presentation of " Robin Hood." Performing March 24, 1989, this class agreed that plays are worth all the hard work and effort simply for the cast party that follows . Third graders experienced a variety of activities this school year. They studied countries around the world, as well as visited the Science Museum to view the "Voyage of the Planets." Despite rough weather, the Kite Flying Contest, organized by the third grade, was still a success. The Class judged kites from each class, and awarded prizes for categories such as the Best Homemade Kite, Prettiest, Most Unusual, and the Best Flying.

4th Grade asks, "Do you believe

Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?" Mr. Lord's fourth graders realized that learning did not necessarily mean " hitting the books" for the entire class day . Oh, yes, they certainly did their share of that, but the y also pulled their noses out of the textbook, too. A cold February day in Jamestown complemented their history lessons on early settlers in Virginia. They learned all about weather stations by visiting one at the Norfolk Naval Base. And they exhibited a flair for the dramatic with their theater production of " Under Jekyll's Hyde," a spoof on the story of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." They also became masters of Japanese cuisine, as they celebrated Sam Proffitt's birthday at the Japanese steak restaurant, Kabuto's.

TO BE DIFFERENT?

fifth grade girl. who participated with costumes and carved pumpkins.

Believing in the D.A.R.E. program was important to Steward's fifth grade. Taught by police officer Steve Francis, the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program was introduced to the fifth grade through a weekly class every Friday afternoon . A successful program , it educated the class on drug abuse and how to say " No" to drugs. In addition to this important topic, fifth graders explored the importance of nutrition and then visited the Winn Dixie store as part of this unit. Because 1988 was an election year , this class also hosted a mock election for the lower school with the assistance of the classroom computer. With their class play "Pinocchio", a field trip to the nation 's capital, a winning short story entry about Steward's school mascot, the fifth grade was astounded that they really accomplished all these things in one year!

They eagerly participated in the school's canned food drive, actively sold poinsettias during Christmas, and created Halloween game booths for the Lower School Halloween festivities . Studying ecology, environmental problems, and lifestyles of forest dwellers were only a sampling of the unique experiences offered to this year's sixth grade.

SEVENTH GRADE BELIEVED IN HELPING OTHERS Can you believe that the seventh grade won this year 's canned food drive? By contributing the most food during the Thanksgiving drive, seventh grade was rewarded with a special submarine sandwich lunch donated by the Student Council. This class also donated their creative time and talents to the Lower School Halloween festivities. Their social life has included bowling after school, going to the movies, and shop路 ping at the mall as a class. Yes, it has been a busy and often unbelievable year!

THREE TESTS IN ONE DAY? IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE UNTIL YOU'RE IN THE.

8th Grade

Michael Malarkey anxiously awaits the English Test to come. Anxious? No! Confident? YES!

"Can you believe that we were just assigned another test today? We have a Science project due tomorrow, OUT short story for English, a Math test, and now THIS???" Yes, these students are only being prepared for the marvels of the Upper School. But these eighth graders were, for the most part, successful in juggling their increased academic loads, as well as playing the seasonal sports, and still finding tim e for having fun or sleeping , The eighth grade class, led by officers Catherine Leitch, Jamie Brock, Shannon Davis, and Art Wright , were successful In convincing the ad路 ministration that a fun field trip was In order. So off they all went to Regency Square to fill up at the food park and buy gag gifts to entertain each other. From field trips to the Virginia Museum to pizza parties, this class has learned to function as a team whose members care about each other. But most Important, they have each matured and prepared themselves fo r the long, hard road ahead with TESTS, TESTS. and more TESTS!

E s. â&#x20AC;˘ SPARTANS SURVEYED! LOWER SCHOOL FAVORITES IN '88/'89:

Everyone knows comfortable shoes make everything nicer, including school activities, but what is " hot" and what is not is a big concern! No one wants to wear uncool shoes in the Lower School, so the Corinthian staff did a sneak survey of the in styles to find out what the "Joe Cool" students wear. The results? For costumes (above left) boots were big, as shown by strongman Gordon Smith, of the 4th Grade . Judson Wilton, Kindergarten style setter, goes for the looselyÂˇtied sneaker, greatly improved by scuffing them up! Brand new shoes were " out" in Lower School! Other kindergarten styles were similar, with an emphasis on flexible soles - who wants stiff, unbending shoes? (For elves , moccasins were just right!) Not too much shoe should show beneath baggy pant legs (a hot style fo r sure) , or if you were the Dough Boy, there was no need to let any shoe show! Best of all , for many, was just slipping shoes off and going barefoot!

MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL STYLES FOR

'ERE CASUAL, COMFORTABLE, PRACTICAL . .. SHARA Buxton has little interest in the sneakers worn by the guys in her class, but they are the standard style for Upper and Middle School guys. To bum around and look good, shoes with soft soles were in. Brendan Daltry and Mr. Cramer wear crepe soles, but Mr. Imirie hides his sneakers! Sherry I Beloff and Delaney Turnage like flats, with or without the popular ankle socks. Another big favorite, worn by Chris Slaydon, Docksiders look casual but can be worn just about any路 where. Lower Schoolers weren't the only ones with loosely laced sneakers, as this new and clean pair show . .. this pair is worn by a guy with size 12 feet! Girls went in for running shoes or sneakers ... the leg, far left bottom , belongs to a 9th Grader who wishes to remain anonymous! Mike Pearce's combat boots were his personal favorite , but not too popular in general. (Lots of skinheads like them too!) Athletes like Ginny Chalkley and the boys' soccer team wear the required cleats, which also came in many variations. Black cleats were in for guys and girls. Totally out of it for students at Steward were high heels for girls and dressy, hard-soled shoes for guys. Some of the Senior guys had to buy dress shoes for graduation - they didn't own any! Several of the Senior girls grumbled about trying to walk in heels, since they so rarely wear them!

MODEL UNITED N ATIONS

Steward delegates agreed this was the best Model United Nations year yet for Steward, and Old Dominion University agreed: 6 awards went to Steward students. Shehwar Qureshi, Katie Anderson , Ming Dodson and Carrie Meyer shared the individual and delegation awards , for work in the Historical Security Council and the Economic and Social Council. Mary Harvard Nolde and Charlotte Tate went along as pages, and did a fine job. The National High School MUN In New York City was attended by Steward students for the first time. Lee Kallman . CORINTHIAN STAFF Mrs. Lydia Harrison stepped in to the advisor role this year, assisting Mrs. Norva Meyer In her last year as Yearbook advisor. Mrs. Harrison Is a journalism expert, and will bring her talents to the 1989-90 Corinthian. Mrs. Harrison conducted the '88-89 Alternate Program class In yearbook preparation, while Mrs. Meyer was away at Model United Nations. She will train her staff in a journalism class, which Steward has not had for many years . Welcome , Mrs . Harrison , and thanks, Mrs. Meyer.
