Inspire the Future.

What do these three words mean?

For our teachers and administrators, Inspire the Future is the reason we’re here. Our students’ experiences of life and learning today will impact the contributions they make to society as adults. Through a robust curriculum and a caring environment, Steward students develop the critical thinking, empathy, civil discourse, and innovative thinking skills that will be required to help shape the future.

Your generosity supports the programs and people that inspire our students. Through gifts of time, talent, and treasure, we come together as a community to make a difference for our young Spartans. Whether you contributed to the Annual Fund or a special project, made costumes or planned a community event, shelved library books or spoke at an assembly, your contribution is vital.

Planned giving is another critical way our community can support our school. This fall, we are excited to celebrate the receipt of our first seven-figure major planned gift, a $1.2 million gift from the family of Betty and E. Carlton Wilton, Sr., and their son Buddy Wilton.

The Wilton family has supported Steward since its early days, when E. Carlton Wilton, Sr. assisted Steward founder Helen Dixon with the land for our campus. Over the years, several members of the Wilton family have attended Steward. They have been touched by our school community, as we have been grateful for their family’s generosity.

Buddy Wilton, who led the planning for and disbursement of this gift, encourages our community members to understand how this gift came to be. What started as a life insurance policy was invested over 20 years, thus increasing the size of the planned gift. With forethought, planned giving is much more accessible than it may seem.

When asked why the Wilton family prioritized this gift to Steward, Buddy Wilton said simply, “Education is the future.” Thank you to the Wilton family, and every member of the Steward community, for helping us Inspire the Future.

Dear Spartans,

This Annual Report contains stories that defined the 2023-24 school year and highlights the generosity of the Steward community. The year was also marked by significant progress toward our strategic philanthropic initiatives. We continued to develop our goals, keeping the needs of our community at the forefront of our plans for both today and tomorrow.

Your generosity resulted in:

• $1,691,569 in funds from all sources from 932 donors

• $568,273 raised for the Annual Fund, exceeding the goal by 30 percent

• $42,616 raised for the first Senior Families Legacy Gift (helping fund a new bus)

• $27,151 raised (to total over $67,000) toward endowing the Alumni Legacy Scholarship

• $7,000 raised from the Alumni Association to the Alumni Legacy Scholarship and the Annual Fund

• $67,000 raised for the Lower School turf field, furniture in the Middle School art room, and 3-D printers in the Bryan Innovation Lab, thanks to the Parents Association, and $47,500 raised at the Parents Association Gala for the Annual Fund

• $38,000 raised for the athletic program (weight equipment, branded volleyball nets, poles, and pads, girls basketball invitational, and tennis windscreens), thanks to the Spartan Club

In June, the Board of Trustees learned of a $1.2 million gift from the family of Betty and E. Carlton Wilton, Sr., and their son Buddy Wilton –Steward’s first significant planned gift. This act of love culminates decades of support from the Wilton family and exemplifies the spirit of legacy giving. We are grateful for the Wiltons’ steadfast vision.

Every day, our team is astonished at the blue-and-gold magic at this great school. It’s the smiles on students’ faces as they embark on discoveries … families’ dedication to community building … connections made in classrooms, on stages, fields, and courts … and our collective commitment to inspire the future. Steward’s Fiscal Management

The financial stability of the school continues to improve through careful budgeting, enrollment management, generous donors, effective treasury policies, and endowment growth. This year the school updated its treasury management policies related to reserves for future capital replacement and maintenance and debt reduction to further take advantage of current interest rate markets.

With almost 90% of our budget derived from net tuition and fees, we must manage our expenditures within these constraints. Our financial plan provides for the school to operate within our annual tuition income while utilizing funds from auxiliary programs, charitable donations, and endowment and interest earnings to provide for program enhancements and innovative programming. Our Variable Tuition budget is also partially supported by these additional funds.

Endowments are critical to the long-term financial success of not-for-profit organizations such as independent schools and other charitable organizations. The withdrawals from the endowment help to offset tuition increases. One of the most significant ways to grow the endowment is through planned gifts from

estates. As you will see elsewhere in this Annual Report, we are grateful to have received a $1.2 million planned gift in June, which increased our endowment and will help fund future capital projects.

As of June 30, 2024, our endowment is projected to be $25 million in unrestricted and restricted funds. Approximately $763,000 of the 2023-24 budget was funded by the annual contribution from the endowment. The annual contribution to the school is based on a formula that utilizes the market value and appreciation of the endowment over the last three years. As the endowment has grown from gifts and net appreciation, this annual gift continues to grow as well. Additionally, almost $50,000 was withdrawn from the endowment and is restricted for certain programs such as health and wellness and scholarships.

Since 2010, the school’s endowment has been managed by Spider Management, the endowment management company of the University of Richmond. Spider Management is the first universityowned investment firm that offers its services to unaffiliated organizations. Through a unique Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) model,

Spider Management strives to share the resources, access, and stability of a large endowment investment office with other non-profit organizations. Our endowment significantly benefits from being actively managed in this manner in a portfolio worth $6.1 billion. The target annual return on the portfolio is 8% annually. Over the past nine years, our endowment has doubled in value.

While our campus looks beautiful, it is aging. The newest building on campus — the Bryan Innovation Lab—turned 10 this past spring. All of our other buildings range from 20-50 years old. With age comes increased annual repairs and maintenance that must be funded. While some routine items come from our annual budget, larger items such as roof replacements and HVAC upgrades must be planned in advance so that they don’t adversely impact a budget year or require the school to borrow funds. On an annual basis the school allocates an amount to reserves to support these projects. On June 30, 2024 these reserves were approximately $3.5 million. The funds are invested to generate a 4-5% return annually. This summer, this reserve allowed the school to replace the 21-year-old HVAC units in the Lower School with no impact to our operating budget.

The school’s approach to maximizing charitable contributions, endowment and interest income, and auxiliary income enables us to enhance the programs that we offer to our students while controlling tuition increases, especially in the current inflationary environment. Additionally, building reserves for plant maintenance and operating needs allow the school to handle the unexpected without adversely impacting the annual budget. Our financial goals are to maintain a budget that supports the mission of the school and provide every opportunity that we can to our students, faculty, and staff.

Annual Fund Giving Games

The annual Giving Games campaign is Steward’s “sparticipation” challenge – an opportunity for donors to help Steward flourish by contributing to the Annual Fund. In 2024, the Giving Games theme was “Where’s Sparty?” The campaign featured Sparty hiding around campus while Spartina searched for him as he highlighted how the Annual Fund supports Steward. “Where’s Sparty?” was the most successful Giving Games yet, raising over $148,000 to support the Annual Fund’s family of funds: athletics, technology, arts, tuition assistance, areas of greatest need, and professional development.

ANNUAL FUND GIFTS

Gifts made every year to the Annual Fund are critical to supporting Steward’s annual budget. The Annual Fund supports faculty and staff salaries, classroom materials, athletic equipment, art supplies, building maintenance, library books, and more. Many people are surprised to learn that it costs approximately $2,054 above and beyond tuition to educate each Steward student. The Annual Fund helps to subsidize this cost.

MAJOR GIFTS

There are always opportunities to provide leadership gifts that support special projects and capital needs that are outside of the annual operating budget. Gifts may be used to upgrade school facilities, landscape the campus, or fund scholarships. These gifts truly sustain and ensure the future of the school, its programs, and its facilities.

GIFTS IN-KIND

Contributions of tangible items can help alleviate budget pressure on programmatic items –planned or unexpected – that the school would otherwise have to purchase. Examples of in-kind gifts donated to Steward recently include athletic equipment and uniforms, instruments, and other supplies.

MATCHING GIFTS

PARTICIPATION

Your participation is the greatest gift you can give! We measure participation in our Annual Fund each year to ensure that we are getting the message out about our funding priorities and needs as a community. No matter what size, your gift will count toward participation. Steward strives to reach 100% giving participation from all members of the community.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES

Gifts of securities offer significant tax advantages to the donor. By making a gift of this type, the donor can take a tax deduction for the full market value of the securities while avoiding capital gains taxes. This is an easy way to make a philanthropic contribution that benefits the school and the donor. PLANNED GIFTS

Some donors wish to include deferred gifts in their estate plans or philanthropic gifts that may provide tax reduction opportunities. These gifts are referred to as planned gifts. The Development Office has partnered with FreeWill to offer free resources to help you achieve clarity on your future plans. Those who have made Steward a beneficiary of part of their estate plans are encouraged to alert the Development Office so that they can be formally recognized as a member of the Heritage Society, Steward’s planned giving society.
