"YOU CAN
me on that." G
rowth, change, learning, friendship, anticipation, and success are all words that can be used to describe the 2000-2001 year at Steward. With all that has happened this year, it is exciting to see what the future holds for the growing Steward community ... The memories of this year are displayed on the pages of this Corinthian. And, you can quote me on that!
- Caitlin Rossmoore Editor Class of 2001

First I'll start off by explaining the pictures. The one with the kid jumping on everyone and pointing his finger was taken at a Death By Stereo show. In the background is ex Steward student Dan Williamson. Try to find him. The picture of the little guy with Eeyore is me around age 5. It was taken at Disney World of course. Stone Wash jeans and big plastic sunglasses were very crucial back then. The picture of all the records in a big square are ... records. These gems contain most of my morals, beliefs, and some of the best lyrics ever written. The picture of the guy with his back to you is my friend Earl. This was at Plan 9. He is on a mission for two years, so I miss him. Thank you: Ryan, Johnny, Laura, Earl, Mark, TImbomb, RJ 'vegan killa', Adam, David, Thomas, Maxx, Braden, Sawyer No Justice, my family, hardcore and straight edge for existing, I love you Mom, Dad, Jay, and Sara. "Kick back and settle down. Let it take. 'Go ahead and do what you want to do.' What would they say on the day I hit the brakes? I'm sure they'd be singing a different tune. Kick down the hour glass. Let it break. I just did what I wanted to . Run my fingers through the sand that it makes, pick it up then I'll throw it in your face." - Kid Dynamite "Proud of who I am what I say what I do. Proud of who I am what I say what I do! I' m standing hard! " - Youth Of Today "Nobody's got style like us. We could be friends like before 1 was crazy. Before I met her, before I went lazy." - American Nightmare "I smiled a nervous smile. But I warmed up and acted cool. Standing by the stove ... Your eyes made it strange ... And I felt out of place ..wondering if you ... If you could take her place." - Lifetime "Possessed to skate!" - Suicidal Tendencies

n Thursday May 24, 2001, the seventh and eighth grade Honor Symposiums performed a mock trial at the University of Richmond Law School. This was the fourth year the symposium students conducted a trial. The students, under the direction of teachers Louise Robertson and Donna Jackson, hoped to learn more about how the legal system works by holding a mock trial based on a fictitious crime. The prosecutors, represented by student lawyers Thomas Neuschul, Lauren Costello, John Gannon, began reading their opening remarks. In these statements the student attorneys outlined the basics of the trial. The defendant, John Diamond, whose part was played by carter Shamburger, had been indicted on first degree murder charges for the shooting death of the victim, Trudi Doyle. Students Kara Johnson and Katie-Seth Kurilecz took the roles of the defense witnesses, while Harper Early, Jessica Powell, Michael Reese, and Ryan Delaney assumed those of the prosecution. - Report by Thomas Neuschul, 8th grade Symposium member

Thanksgiving Program 113
The Lower School's Holiday Program proved to be a most elegant affair this year. "A Black Tie Affair" was a high energy holiday production with precision dancing and spirited vocal numbers, at times in two-part harmony! Reindeer, penguins, holiday symbols, elves, snowflakes, and Santa's buddies sang and danced their way through a production that brought smiles to all audience members. Santa, played by Will Garner, fell out of his sleigh in the South Pole and suffered a terrible case of amnesia. Santa finally realized who he was with the help of Jack Frost (Kitty Ball), the Abominable Snowman (Ben Sauer), the Snow Queen (Laura Skove), and the Penguins (Sara Small, Amy Bisger, Cary Baronian, Stewart Hargrove, John Lewis, Stuart Smith, Polly Cannella, Beth Dixon, Josh Stafford, Patrick McKeown, and Margaret Gupton). To help Santa regain his memory, the penguins called on the elves (kindergarten), Santa's buddies (first grade), the snowflakes (second grade), all of the symbols of the season (third grade), the reindeer (fourth grade),and the remaining penguins of the South Pole (fifth grade). After a beautiful solo by the Snow Queen, Santa was awakened and greeted by his dancing reindeer.

rfud~'d The 2000 Boy's Varsity Soccer team had another successful season. Led by Senior captains Alex Duty and Will Perkins, the team consisted of a large number of lowerclassmen. While the boys played a number of challenging teams, they finished the season with a solid 8-6 record. Pre-season training began in the late summer and continued until the conclusion of the season in late October. Although this year's departing seniors Will Perkins, Alex Duty, Parke Smith, and Ted Benson will be greatly missed, next year's team shows promise with the influx of younger players. The cross country team was a young group with only one returning runner from last year's seniorladen team. The squad was hit with several injuries this year and as a result had an incomplete roster when competing in meets against larger schools. In the meets against schools of similar size, a complete roster is considered three or more runners . The boys' team had a record of 1-2, and the girls had one tie. The highlight of the season was the meet versus Collegiate's JV team and Northstar Academy. All five runners finished in the top half of the field. Another highlight came at the state meet, which was held at Woodbury Forest. Three of the five runners finished in the top half, and freshman Meg Robertson set a personal record of 24:26 minutes, also a record for the fastest female runner from Steward.

The 2000-2001 Boys' Varsity Basketball team had a tough but productive year. Back in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference (VCe) for the first time in eight years, they had an overall record of 8-14. The record in the VCC, a highly competitive league, was 3-10. Coach Jim Duty returned as head coach with Wallace Inge assisting. Although the team's record doesn't seem very solid, nine of the losses were by less than 10 points. A memorable game was the contest against Tidewater Academy, the then number two ranked team in the state. The Spartans lost by one point in that exciting game. Many players had outstanding seasons. Junior transfer Jamiel Allen was a wonderful addition to the team and was named to the VCC All-Conference team. Senior captain Alex Duty was named to the VCC Honorable Mention All-Conference team as well as the All Academic team. Senior co-captain Will Perkins led the team in rebounds. The starting lineup, in addition to Allen, Duty, and Perkins, included freshman Jeremy Karmolinski, sophomore Ryan Kerr, juniors Jared Cichocki and Mat Porter, and senior Jamie Reed. This year's varsity cheerleading squad was composed of 16 dedicated athletes including two boys. The squad, led by captains Brianna Bloom, Laura Weisiger, and Heather Hajek, started out the season in August with a three-day camp at the University of Richmond. They learned dances, cheers, and numerous new stunting techniques, and in October, showed their skills at the Homecoming pep rally. Up until the start of basketball season in December , the girls and boys had daily practices to get in shape for the season. Since the boys' basketball team participated in a new conference (the Virginia Commonwealth Conference), the squad was also challenged at each game, "competing" against the rival squads. At the conclusion of the season, the girls competed in the VCC Competition. In addition to that competition, they participated in the Eastern Cheerleading Association Regional Competition on January 13 at Lee-Davis High School. It was the first competition for most of the team, and they had an incredible performance. They placed second and qualified for another regional competition in March. However, the competition was during Spring Break so they were unable to participate. The squad had a successful year and worked hard every day after school. Both coaches noted the tremendous leadership roles that the team's three senior members provided. Ashlee Healey, Elizabeth Larus, and Caitlin Rossmoore provided direction to some of the younger players in the team's quest for an overall record of 7 wins and 3 losses. Eighth grader Lacy Slabaugh had a great singles season for her #1 seed position, and newcomer Allison Strickland made substantial progress as the season continued.

STEWARD HOMECOMING 2000 Student Council sponsored another great Homecoming this year. On Saturday, October 21/ after weeks of preparation by students, faculty, and administrators alike, a great day of celebration took place. The festivities began around noon with the traditional parade, including both Middle and Upper School students. Some students paraded on foot with banners and costumes, while decorated cars and trucks transported princes and princesses, cheerleaders, and club members. Along with the parade, food and game booths also provided enjoyment and entertainment. Added on to all the festivites were the sports events. This year Field Hockey, Cross Country and Soccer were all involved in the celebration. This year's court was feted at half-time of the soccer game and consisted of the following princesses and princes: 9th grade- Heather Hajek and Jeremy Karmolinski; 10th grade-Allison Strickland and Nick Lauher; 11th grade-Ashley Van Ness and Clay Tharrington. The 12th grade Homecoming Court/s members were Brianna Bloom, Sally Gottwald, Sarah Martenstein, Harry Baron, Ted Benson, and Will Perkins. The grand finale came that evening at the Homecoming Dance. The new dining commons was beautifully decorated. Around 9:30 p.m., Brianna Bloom was proclaimed queen for the year 2000/ and for the first time ever there was a three-way tie giving us a trio of kings-Harry Baron, Ted Benson and Will Perkins. Another fine Homecoming came to an end, leaving behind fond memories of fun and school spirit.
